A Lifeline for Animals in Need

Animal Accident Rescue Unit is a transport service for sick, injured or vulnerable animals and birds. It provides both transport to a vet surgery, arranging for their treatment and caring for them in foster homes until either their owner can be traced or new homes can be found. The Charity has no central base and is run entirely by volunteers working from their own homes. It has taken in so many cats over the last few months, it desperately needs new fosterers who can provide a temporary home for one of our rescued cats. If you think you can help, please ring the Recruitment Officer on 0115-956 3799 (recruitment calls only).

Volunteer Drivers and Phone Operators Needed!

Local Nottingham-based charity Animal Accident Rescue Unit is seeking volunteer drivers with their own car who have a couple of hours a week to spare during the daytime, evening or weekend. The charity needs help to transport rescued animals to and from vet practices and foster homes. Additionally, reliable people are needed to take calls from the public who require help with animals they find in distress. All roles are based from home. To learn more on how you can make a difference to vulnerable animals, please ring the Recruitment Officer on 0115-956 3799 (recruitment calls only). Many other volunteering roles are also available. Animal Accident Rescue Unit lifeline telephone number for dealing with animals in distress is 0115-932 1555. For non-urgent queries and information, email us at admin@ aaru.org.uk, visit www.animalaccident.org. uk, or by post to PO Box 5414, Burton Joyce, Nottingham NG14 5DT. Anna Soubry and Gloria Morgan presented the winning prize to Alan Dance for his novel "Leen Times" set in Nottingham in the 1820's. The event includes an exhibition in Kimberley Library charting the history of libraries in the town and local authors displayed their books in the Rumbletums Cafe. "Kimberley has been devoted to books this morning. The children’s parade of book characters featuring the very hungry caterpillar was a delight and they sang a song in celebration of reading and writing which we all enjoyed. Congratulations also go to all the shops who took part in a window dressing competition with a book theme. Gloria and her small team have done a great job organising this event which I hope will become a regular feature in Kimberley."

Every year, numerous motorists fall victim to this type of crime, whether they are halfway through a shopping trip, dropped their bags off at the car and gone back for round two, or returned home from a shopping trip and not yet unloaded the bags from the car. Don’t learn the hard way – remember to lock all your car doors, make sure windows are closed and under no circumstances leave items on display when your car is unattended. In the coming weeks you may well be out in town, at a Christmas party, or toasting the festive season with your friends and family. We want you to enjoy yourself but remain safe, so we would ask you to plan your night out, drink responsibly, and don't leave your drinks unattended.

For most people, Christmas is a time for fun and general merriment with the family, but for the same reasons it can also be quite a stressful occasion. If you feel the atmosphere getting heated, and it’s not the dinner in the oven, take some time out. Make a snowman in the garden, or if it’s not a white Christmas, play with all your new gadgets and gismos. While we want everyone to have an enjoyable and safe festive period, we will take robust action to remove anyone from the street who is engaging in inappropriate or violent behaviour. No one wants to spend Christmas in police custody with the knowledge that your family and friends are celebrating without you. Make sure you are kept up to date with what is happening in the area next year by signing up to Nottinghamshire Police’s Neighbourhood Alert system. This is an automated service that sends out free updates about local crime trends and incidents by email and text. It is a great way to be kept in the loop and I would encourage everyone to sign up by visiting www.neighbourhoodalert.co.uk.

Our helicopter and crew are on call every single day of the year during daylight hours. We average 4 missions a day attending everything from road traffic accidents, industrial and sporting accidents, serious illnesses and people who are injured in inaccessible places. Each year it costs the LNAA £1.7million to provide this vital, life-saving service and we receive no Government or Lottery funding. We rely on individuals, companies and community groups to help us reach this target. Some of the ways people can help their Air Ambulance Service are: • Donating money • Fundraising on our behalf • Joining our Lottery • Remembering us in their will • Donating their time as a Volunteer Volunteers are needed in our shops in Mapperley, Retford, Stapleford, Sutton in Ashfield and Mansfield Woodhouse to help serve customers, sort stock and window-dress. At events volunteers are needed to help set up our stand, sell LNAA merchandise and run tombolas and other fundraising initiatives. We need volunteer drivers to drive our vans to events and to deliver stock to our shops and we need volunteers at our warehouse to sort stock and donations and people are needed all over the county to attend cheque presentations on our behalf. Volunteering is very rewarding and you will be helping to save lives, will meet lots of people and there are roles to meet most abilities and talents. Exciting research project for families in Nottingham Do you have a child aged 2 years 9 months to 4 years 6 months? Does your child constantly move around, fidget and wriggle, not listen to you or talk too much? Local Children Celebrate Competition Wins

PRIORY VISITORS GO THE “WHOLE HOGG” FOR CHARITIES

Two local children are celebrating after winning top prizes for completing Broxtowe Borough Council’s Challenge 5 competition over the summer.

The historic Beauvale Priory came to life for an evening of food, music and dancing in September to raise over £1,200 for the Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Margaret Handley’s two chosen charities, The Royal British Legion and Ryan Lee Trust.

Children were challenged to complete five out of a possible 22 activities across the Broxtowe Borough, including cheerleading in the pool, attending play days, badminton and Punch & Judy as well as snorkelling and scuba diving. The Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Margaret Handley, presented an iPad as the first prize to Thomas Wright (10) and second prize PlayStation 2 to Patrick Ramsey (13) at Eastwood’s D.H. Lawrence Heritage Centre. Joint runners up, Hannah Brompton (6) and Edgar Fleming (8) also won an Annual Vitality Vibe Youth Gym Membership each and other entrants received vouchers for free Vitality Vibe Youth Gym sessions at Kimberley Leisure Centre and a free swimming session at Kimberley or Bramcote Leisure Centre. Broxtowe Borough Council Cabinet Member for Arts, Leisure and Culture, Councillor Richard Robinson said: “The Challenge 5 competition was a great way for families to get out and about during the summer holidays and experience what all the borough’s leisure centres and heritage sites have to offer.”

The Charity Line Dance and Hog Roast saw Ann and Tony Whyte from Beauvale Abbey Farm welcome over 180 visitors to enjoy free line dance instruction from Lasso Lizzie, a mouth-watering hog roast courtesy of Redgate Butchers and live entertainment from Kimberley’s King of Swing, Frankie Martin. The Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Margaret Handley, said: “It was incredible to see the strength of feeling shown by people of all ages towards the Royal British Legion and Ryan Lee Trust. Every penny really does count for these two very worthy causes and I would like to say a special ‘thank you’ to everyone for their generosity and for helping to make the event such a success.” Each year the Mayor of Broxtowe organises a number of fundraising events to raise money for their chosen charities, culminating in the annual Charity Ball, which will take place on Saturday 20th April 2013.

Putting the Clocks Back by Gloria Morgan I still haven’t adjusted the time display in my car. I’ve been through the house brandishing remotes, pushing buttons, getting the central heating to come on when I want it. All of that I can do, but the clock in the car defeats me. Twice a year I drive round for weeks with it showing the wrong hour. It is such a hassle to change it. I need to dig out the manual, which never seems to be where I left it last time, and follow the impossibly complicated directions to tweak the hour forward or back. Six months later, of course, I’ve completely forgotten what to do again. In theory, going digital has made it easier to change, especially in autumn when we put the clocks back an hour. There is no mechanism to damage, as there is in a windup clock or watch. I have a lovely old 1920’s mantel clock that chimes every half an hour. The trick with that is to stop the clock by disconnecting the pendulum at about ten minutes to 11 on Saturday night and set it going again next morning at what would have been 10 minutes to 10. The high-precision mechanical movement of a clock is a surprisingly old invention. The record for having the oldest working clock in the world is claimed by Salisbury Cathedral. Their clock was built in 1386 and is still going today, making it 626 years old. Dating back centuries before that, the Chinese invented a means of telling the time using a device that was filled with water which slowly drained out at a regular rate, thus giving an indication of how much time had passed. Water clocks caught on and were used all over the world. Another early method of keeping time was to mark the hours on a candle and count how many marks had melted away. One fifteenth century way of telling the time that was equally at home on land and at sea was

the hour glass. Smaller versions with three or four minutes’ worth of sand inside are still used as egg-timers. An ever popular piece of garden furniture is the sun-dial. These have been around since ancient times. They work by casting a shadow from a rod onto the hours inscribed around the rim. There is a big down side to telling the time by sun-dial. You do need enough sun to cast a shadow. The fact that some old houses in this country actually had a sun-dial built into an outside wall is a testament to the unquenchable optimism of the British. And they are, of course, totally useless in the dark. But what do we want with such old fashioned objects in this modern age of electronic timers that shave fractions off a thousandth of a second? Internetwise world wide webbers have no time for that old truck. But haven’t you ever growled in frustration when the little hour glass icon on the screen keeps you waiting? Even in this G4 age, isn’t it funny how bits of history just won’t go away?
