From Sergeant Andy Browning... Now the nights are drawing in and we are experiencing the darkest evenings of the year it is important to take preventative steps to reduce the chance of becoming a victim of crime. These are simple precautions we can all take. Garages and sheds • Keep your garage door open ONLY for as long as is necessary. • Security mark ALL valuables stored in your shed and garage. • Large expensive equipment, like lawn mowers, should be fastened to something bulky. Alternatively, fit anchor posts attached to the floor to provide a fixed point for locking your belongings to. Vehicles • Don’t leave vehicle windows open while they are unattended. • When leaving your vehicle make sure there is nothing on show. • Lock ALL windows and doors, and activate an immobiliser. At home • Use strong locks on all external doors and easy to reach windows. • Don’t hang keys where they could easily be reached through a letterbox or window and never leave them on a sideboard where they are visible. • Keep valuable items away from windows where they could be seen by passers-by. • Close the curtains when it becomes dark to prevent people looking into your property. • Think about using timer switches so that your property is lit inside at various times especially with the darker nights. Yourself • Make sure when using cash points you keep your PIN secure at all times and be aware of others around you. • Be mindful of your surroundings when using your mobile phone. • Keep personal bags secured at all times.

Ella’s Teen Talk: New Year’s Resolutions a good thing?....
New year is always an exciting time where you can look back on the past year with pride, memories Ella Higginbotham aged 15 and, in my case, relief that I can move on from last year’s me and hopefully grow into someone with a better hairstyle or more grown up persona. However, setting a new year’s resolution? What is the point? You never hear people three months down the line giving an update of their resolution; in fact it’s a surprise if they can even remember what it was in the first place. I believe it is just something we feel like we should take part in; there is really no gain from it except trying to seem more committed than friends and family who are equally determined to stick to their resolutions! So be careful, there is always that one competitive member of the family that will gloat about how they’ve lost 5 pounds with their new lifestyle or giving up alcohol for the month (I mean, does anyone really care?!) However, if your dad or mum own a gym then I bet you love the new year, you think new year’s resolutions are a gift from the gods because your parents will be raking the money in! If over 50% of members actually get their money’s worth from going to the gym then it will be a miracle. So some new year’s resolutions really just cause unneeded financial problems, why do adults spend money on silly promises when they could buy their lovely teenage ‘children’ new things?! That would be much more beneficial for everyone! If we, as teenagers, are the ones making the resolutions then we are always much more realistic than our parents. Most of us will simply aim to go to more parties and socialise and have a fun year; this is a much better idea than trying to be sensible by dieting or setting life goals as it is a lot more achievable! But whether you’re an adult or a teenager, if you Next have your heart set on a resolution and you are ready to be fully committed issue: then I say this; why wait for a new year to set yourself a target to do something? If you want to do something Getting the then just do it, no excuses. If you are that determined then surely you would most from like a head start…

Two Guiding Awards for Eastwood Leader
A Guide Leader from Eastwood was amongst those honoured at a special Awards Afternoon held by Girlguiding Nottinghamshire in September. June Bingham was presented with both the Thanks badge and the Nottinghamshire County Brooch for her work as Residential Adviser by Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s County Commissioner Kate Royse. The event marked the hard work and dedication of some 60 members of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire and included long-service awards to 15 women who have devoted a combined total of over 530 years to Guiding. In addition to the awards marking 30, 40 and 50 years of service, the afternoon saw presentations of Oak Leaf awards to six Guiders and the Nottinghamshire Star to 12 non-uniformed volunteers, together with nine Queen’s Guide Awards and eight special ‘Thanks’ badges given by County Commissioner Kate Royse as a personal gesture of appreciation.
Vibe Youth Gym Awards BMX Determination and commitment has paid off for a young girl from Giltbrook after she was awarded a new BMX bike in exchange for points she earned improving her fitness at Broxtowe Borough Council’s Kimberley Leisure Centre. Ten year-old Saskia Bexon picked up her BMX Bike in October, alongside her family after earning over 10,000 points during the last nine months by completing various gym challenges including running distances of up to 5km on the treadmill and using the rowing machine. She is the 7th child to reach 10,0000 points since Kimberley Leisure Centre’s Youth Gym opened in 2009. Saskia’s mum, Maxine said: “Saskia was extremely motivated and committed to improving her fitness and visited the gym regularly. She showed real dedication to achieve the goals set for her and win the top prize.”
‘We all enjoyed a lovely afternoon of celebration,’ says Kate Royse, who presented all the awards. ‘Girlguiding Nottinghamshire is proud to acknowledge the service and achievements of its members, especially those who keep on Guiding under difficult circumstances. The commitment shown by our leaders and volunteers ensures that Guiding continues to provide opportunities for girls and young women across Notts to have fun and to develop their full potential in a safe, girlonly space.’
Children who attend the gym can exchange their points for a wide range of prizes. Vitality Vibe is a supervised gym for children and young people aged between 8 and 15 years. Vitality Vibe combines conventional cardiovascular and resistance machines with the latest interactive gaming fitness equipment to create a fun, exciting, safe and vibrant exercise centre for young people. Qualified fitness instructors are present at all times to make certain every child’s exercise and safety needs are met whilst using the facility. Structured exercise sessions are in place to ensure each child gets the maximum benefit from attendance.

a helping hand Anna Soubry MP launches Defibrillator campaign in Broxtowe
COMMUNITY OUTREACH ADVISOR SERVICE. for all those aged 50+ in Broxtowe Borough WE OFFER A FREE HOME VISITING SERVICE Our community outreach advisor Ann is happy to visit and chat about issues that are important to you:
A defibrillator, a life-saving emergency device which delivers a dose of electrical energy to restabilise heart rhythm after a cardiac arrest, has been installed outside Burrows and Close chemists, for public use, by East Midlands Ambulance Service.
• Voluntary groups & their services • Local lunch & activity groups • Benefits advice • Social Services/Council
Speaking of the campaign, Anna said: “Defibrillators save lives – they are easy to use and mean someone who suffers a cardiac arrest can be helped quickly in the all important ‘first 4 minutes’ of an attack”.
Available in the office Friday mornings for queries.
Anna is working to install more defibrillators in public places throughout Broxtowe. Speaking of her campaign, Anna said: “We already have a number of Defibrillators, but we need more. They cost about £1,500 each and EMAS has agreed to identify places where a defibrillator should be installed. I will then bring together Councillors and local businesses to raise money above the current £170,000 EMAS are spending on defibrillators throughout the East Midlands.”

Christmas Classics Snowy Christmas Log
This easy Christmas cake is based on a recipe from my friend Dena. It is easy and delicious. 40 ginger biscuits 600ml whipping cream 2 tbsp icing sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract sherry or orange juice decorations rectangular serving plate
Method
Whip the cream with the icing sugar and vanilla essence until it is just holding it’s shape. Dip each biscuit in either sherry, orange juice or the tipple of your choice! Just a quick dunk - you don’t want them soggy. Then spread with a teaspoon of cream and sandwich together. You want two rows of 20 biscuits. Then cover the whole lot with the rest of the cream. Use a fork to make the bark pattern then refrigerate overnight if possible. Before serving decorate as you please - I used silver balls and glitter sprinkles.
Granny Annies Trifle
small swiss roll - sliced sherry for soaking sponge 150g fresh raspberries 110g tin raspberries in juice 300ml whipping cream 2 tbsp custard powder 1 egg 1pt milk 1 tbsp sugar grated chocolate for decorating glass trifle bowl Method
Place sponge slices on bottom of bowl and pour sherry over. Put fresh raspberries on top along with tinned raspberries and 2 tbsp of juice from tin. To make custard whisk egg with custard powder and sugar in a bowl. Heat milk in a pan til warm but not boiling. Add custard powder mixture to pan and heat, stirring until it thickens. Allow to cool - sprinke top with caster sugar to prevent a skin forming. When cool spoon over fruit. Whip cream and spoon over custard. Decorate with grated chocolate.
Mince Pies
These are quick and easy - you could leave out the lard and use just butter or marg. 225g plain flour pinch of salt 50g lard 50g butter 410g jar mince meat splash of brandy (optional) icing sugar for decorating
Method
Heat oven to 200°C. Grease a tart baking tin. Add flour and salt to the bowl of a food processor. Cut the fat into small chunks and add to the processor. Pulse until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs. Switch the processor to continuouslly on and a tbsp at a time add about 4tbsp ice cold water until you have a smooth dough. Roll out on a flat, floured surface. Using a 3” cutter make 12 x circles and place in the baking tin. Tip the mince meat into a bowl and mix in the brandy if using. Spoon into the pies. Using a 2.5” cutter make 12 x lids. Brush edges with milk and place on top of pies. Brush tops with milk and bake in oven for 20 mins or until golden brown. Dust with icing sugar. If you have any pastry left, repeat. Makes between 12 and 20 pies depending on how thin you roll your pastry and how big your tin is.

The Golden Age by Gloria Morgan On my birthday recently I got an E-card. I opened it up and bluebirds chirruped a happy birthday song as they flapped their little virtual wings. It was very cute and much appreciated but I have to confess I do rather like the old fashioned greetings cards that you can stand on the mantelpiece and look at for a week. My cards are not, in fact, on the mantelpiece because I haven’t got one. That disappeared when I had gas-fired central heating installed instead of that charming old fire grate that needed sweeping out every time it was used. Oh, the nostalgic joy of crackling coals – and scorch marks on the carpet from falling cinders and a lungful of choking dust when you emptied the ash-pan in the morning.
I confess, I want to have my cake and eat it too. I love the idea of a traditional Dickensian family trudging home with a goose from the market and then gathering round the piano in the parlour, all warmth and good cheer and singing. What I actually do is order my Christmas dinner on-line and have it delivered by the supermarket, click on the web to buy the latest X-box or i-pad for my nearest and dearest, and collapse in front of the Strictly Christmas Special on the telly. I think perhaps we’re all time-travelling hypocrites at heart – picking out the best of long ago to daydream about. We wouldn’t have liked the real thing. My forebears would have been below stairs, the boot boys and the scullery maids, stuck fast at the bottom of a rigid social hierarchy, one day off a month if they were lucky, dining on crumbs from their master’s table. Now, in my opinion, is the golden age – the best time ever in history to be alive. We have the means to do so much to take care of ourselves and others. We can travel, relieve pain, pick and choose from a vast array of merchandise, keep in contact over the miles, have our voice heard via social media, enjoy wall-towall entertainment. So I ignore the prophets of doom and those who decry everything and everybody. I thank my lucky stars for all I have, and I look forward to 2014 with optimism – the best is yet to come!
But central heating seems so wimpish. It isn’t like winter in the old days in this cottage. That was somehow more authentic – stepping out of bed on to chilly lino and scraping the ice off the inside of the bedroom windows. The bracing air, the hand-knitted woolly jumpers, the bronchitis. Like many of us, I sometimes yearn for a touch of the past, particularly when Christmas is approaching and we all hark back to days of yore. The pictures of bygone Christmases are full of children throwing snowballs, real candles flickering on a real tree, a pudding stuffed with silver sixpences and topped with holly, skaters on a frozen pond – a world blissfully unaware of health and safety.

THE BEST OF ITALIAN TILE COLLECTIONS FOR 2014 EMC Tiles are delighted to give you a preview of the latest in tile fashion, fresh from Italy. Our team recently visited the country - home of designer ceramic tiles - in order to catch up on the current trends to enable us to quickly bring them to our customers back in the UK.
For a natural rustic or modern feel, the ‘Nature’ range mimics real wood in a selection of six colours: almond, beige, grey, dark grey, brown and white. Each tile is plank shaped with a ‘grain’ to ensure you get a realistic effect but offers the durability and practicality of a ceramic tile.
One notable innovation is new, larger tile sizes up to 90cm square from Manufacturer Ceramica Imola allowing you to cover large spaces quickly and stylishly.
And, for those who’d love a natural stone look but without the price tag, you’ll find two new ranges at EMC, based on the characteristics of real stone and suitable for indoor or outdoor use. Combining beauty and warmth with great performance, ‘Pietre d’Italia’ and ‘Opificio delle pietre’ are available in modular sizes and a number of colours. Their light reflecting qualities really make a statement and give you great freedom to create a unique display in virtually any setting.
Next is Imola’s highly adaptable ‘Creative Concrete’ range. Manufactured from porcelain, it mixes square and rectangular tiles with varying tones to provide a calm, neutral atmosphere. Suitable for floors and walls in a number of grey and white shades, ‘Creative Concrete’ also incorporates Art Nouveau style decorative tiles with embossed designs, and fresco style trims that add immediate texture and interest. ew ns y N sig pla e s D Di n O

Are you interested in singing? Do you want to free your voice and enjoy good company?
Alan Johnson singers are looking for new members-men and women- to join them. Alan Johnson teaches all choir members to bring out their individual voice using the ‘Bel Canto’ technique. All choir members have lessons with Alan and learn at an individual pace. Getting into singing as an adult is lovely. Singing is a stress buster, gets us breathing properly, helps to release endorphins-the body’s ‘happy chemicals’, helps the energy flow and gets those feelings out. Many people feel singing gives them a therapeutic experience. The more your singing technique improves, the more control you gain and confidence grows as result. Individual lessons with Alan helps to get you started and you’ll find that you will be able to develop your voice-it is like a sport, the more you put in the more you get out! We meet every Tuesday @ The Lakeside Arnold from 19.30-21.30. You are most welcome to make an informal visit. For further information about The Alan Johnson Singers and lessons, please contact Alan and Debbie Johnson Tel 0115 9200417 or Email ajsingers@btinternet. com

A record number of visitors flocked to Eastwood last month to take part in the 10th annual D.H. Lawrence Festival with over 7,500 people taking part in the two-week celebration - a 66% increase on last year’s festival. Over 70 events took place in and around Lawrence’s hometown of Eastwood during the festival, with help from over 50 local voluntary groups, schools, businesses and organisations including The D.H. Lawrence Society, Ashfield District Council, The University of Nottingham and the Creative Eastwood Booktown Group. This year’s Festival paid particularly celebration to the centenary of one of Lawrence’s most famous novels, Sons and Lovers, with a wide array of special events taking place to celebrate the book. Festival highlights included a film screening of the classic Oscar winning film adaptation of Sons and Lovers at Eastwood Comprehensive, hosted by D.H. Lawrence Festival patron BBC Radio Nottingham presenter John Holmes. Over 400 people from Eastwood and Brinsley were used as extras in the film when it was filmed and a number of these extras came together during the 2013 festival to share their experiences, travelling from as far away as Australia.
