A CHRISTMAS MYTH by A. Pigeon I‛m an ordinary pigeon, living local, with my brothers. A Christmas do was going off, so I went with the others. The party was in fancy dress; it was in Trafalgar Square. We all had lots of arguments, deciding what to wear. My choice was a partridge, ‛cos I thought it sounded posh. “Coo,” the others said to me, “that‛ll cost a lot of dosh.” I enquired at the costume shop but got negative replies. It would have cost an arm and a leg but they didn‛t have my size. Without a partridge costume my party dream seemed dead, Until my pigeon granny said she‛d knit me one instead. So I got my dream, and my partridge suit, and I joined the pigeon throng. I flew between one wearing zebra stripes and one dressed as King Kong. We made our way to the pigeon ball, flying in strict formation. Until a sudden thunderstorm caused total consternation. Pigeon pirates and pigeon clowns were scattered far and wide. I was blown into a largish tree. It was a bumpy ride. As I landed, something pear-shaped hit me hard upon the bum, Maybe an avocado – it was too big for a plum. But this was not the time to guess varieties of fruit. I was suspended upside down, by my knitted partridge suit. My knitted head was back to front, so the eye holes weren‛t aligned. My knitted beak was round my ears, so I was deaf as well as blind. My wings were caught up in the sleeves so they wouldn‛t unfurl. Both my feet were shackled in my granny‛s plain and purl. Stuck up in this tree, I couldn‛t tell where I‛d been travelling. I‛d lost my homing instinct and my costume was unravelling. I managed to get right way up, after quite a slog, But my wings were held like handcuffs by my granny‛s P-2-Tog. There was no way I could escape because I couldn‛t fly And my feet were tethered to the branch in a tangle of four-ply. My granny‛s double-cable was the perfect partridge clone, But I was trapped inside it – and I was on my own. A partridge in a tree is not a normal situation. Nobody who saw it would have an explanation. Partridges prefer the ground – they are earth-bound without question. They haven‛t got a head for heights; and pears give them indigestion. Suddenly I heard music underneath my tree; Lords and ladies dancing and having quite a spree. I saw geese with eggs, and girls with cows, and milk pails over-brimming And five gold rings, and several swans doing synchronised swimming. I had a bird‛s eye view, of course, but I got a sudden itch Caused by too much tension in my granny‛s stocking stitch. A Turtle Dove flew up to look and would not leave me alone. He started taking pictures of me on his mobile phone. Those photographs went viral and caused a big furore. “Partridge in a Pear Tree” became a headline story. My granny saw the coverage and thought it was over-rated, But she called the pigeon rescue squad and got me liberated. So a partridge in a pear tree, you see, is an urban myth That everybody sings about on December the twenty-fifth. And now you know the truth at last of how the myth began. It was me in my partridge costume knitted by my gran.

Festive Stress? The festive period is nearly upon us and though it brings joyful times and happy memories for most of us, it can also be a time of stress and unhappiness. Whilst there is much to celebrate during the festive season, it can also bring plenty of stressful times along with it. Whether it is stress from all of the shopping, preparing and entertaining that many people accept as a part of Christmas and New Year, financial worries when faced with the expense of Christmas or strained family relations seeming more heightened and tense at this time of year, it can all go some way to make you feel overwhelmed and totally stressed out. If this is you, there are a few things you can do to help yourself de-stress – even if you only have limited time. The simplest and quickest thing you can do to get those feelings of stress under control is to focus on your breathing. Spend a few moments focusing on taking deep breaths – breathing in for a count of four through your nose and out for a count of five through your mouth. Not only does this focus on your breathing take your mind away from the things that stress you out for a few minutes but it also physically acts upon one of the symptoms of stress – rapid shallow breathing. The great thing about this is that you can do this anywhere – whether in the middle of a packed shopping centre or stood in front of a hot stove full of pans. There are other practical steps you can take if you have a little more time. Exercise is great for reducing
symptoms of stress as well as flooding the body with feel-good endorphins and this can be anything from a brisk wintry walk to an hour in the gym – whatever works for your lifestyle. You can also try journalling or mindfulness as a way to reduce feelings of stress. Sometimes though, the festive period can bring up deeper feelings of unhappiness or anxiety and that is totally normal too. The adverts on TV can make you feel like the whole world is having a great time apart from you, which can make you feel even worse. The most important thing to remember is that you are not alone – there are many people out there who feel just the same way as you. It might seem like a tall order but try to be kind to yourself – beating yourself up for not feeling just like everyone else does nobody any good. Very often these feelings – whether stress or unhappiness and depression - pass just as the season passes but if you find these feelings lingering into the new year, it might be time to consider taking action to deal with these feelings properly. There are many options you can take, whether it is finding an appropriate self-help book or maybe considering a talking therapy such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) to work through these feelings and go forward into the new year feeling much more positive and able to cope with whatever life throws your way.
Marie Scott is a CBT therapist and psychotherapist, based at Maple House Clinic in Eastwood, NG16 3BD. She deals with issues such as anxiety, depression, stress and anger amongst many others. New Youth Mayor For Broxtowe
Broxtowe’s new Youth Mayor and Deputy Youth Mayor made their first public appearance in their new roles at the Broxtowe Borough Council meeting in October. Samaira Saleem, 17, from Nuthall, was elected the new Broxtowe Youth Mayor, taking over from Ellie Sandy. Broxtowe Youth Voice also elected Yamam Alsudani as Deputy Youth Mayor. Accepting the role of Broxtowe Youth Mayor, Samaira said: “I am looking forward to working with other ambitious young people to highlight key issues and campaign for change.” She also encouraged other young residents to get involved, adding: “It is vital that young people are at the forefront of change and development. As a member of the Broxtowe Youth Voice, you will be given the opportunity to develop and improve the lives of young people as well as represent key issues in Council.” Broxtowe Youth Council was set up in 1999 to allow young people to debate the issues affecting them and is currently working with various departments within the Council on a number of projects. Nuthall Parish Hold Their First Ever Teenage Event
“Well Cool!”...That’s how grateful teenagers described Nuthall Parish Council’s first ever “Teenz Only” Fun Day which was staged at the Basil Russell Playing Fields in the village. More than eighty “real teenagers” and thirty or more under age “pretenders” (11 and 12 year olds) were in their element as the Council funded a varied programme of activities to meet their requirements. The Parish Council’s newest councillor Linda Carter was the driving force behind the social initiative while her council colleagues, who underwent special safeguarding training in readiness for the event, gave her a massive show of support. Fair weather played its part and there was much to enjoy for the excited youngsters whose behaviour on the day was described as “immaculate!”. Mark Silvers from Nuthall F.C. joined in by running a Soccer Masterclass and Jay Wright of Challenge Life Fitness kept the eager teens on their toes with his very popular army style assault course, while a Surf Rider competition, archery, lawn bowls and crazy golf added to the fun packed programme which was enriched by super Sumo Suit Wrestling contests and appropriate music. Thanks must also go to the local businesses that supported the event. Visit our facebook page for more photographs and details and to let us have your feedback on this event and any other area of parish life.

New Recreational Space Proposed in Colliers Wood
The Friends of Colliers Wood have partnered with Broxtowe’s Parks and Open Spaces department to create a new recreational and activity space in Colliers Wood. The area will see the establishment of new seating and tables, land-marked by two mining wheel segments. The wheels will mark the area as a focal point of the woodland and will act as display boards for community artwork. Caunton Engineering has offered to restore, paint and install the wheels in a generous in-kind project contribution.
The Temple Centre, Nottingham Road, Nuthall NG16 1DP The ideal place for your children’s party with large function room, annexe and playing field available. They would like to hear from community groups and individuals who would benefit through the creation of this space. MASALA j u n c t i o n
AN ABSOLUTE GEM THAT WON’T BREAK THE BANK! After a three year break from the restaurant trade, Naj Aziz is back with a bang. Using his 25 years of multi award winning restaurant experience (The Indian and MemSaab), he has launched Masala Junction. Situated in the old Natwest bank on the junction between Mansfield Road and Hucknall Road in Carrington/Mapperley Park, the restaurant offers authentic Indian dishes in a building with both history and character. A year in the making, Naj bought the bank back in March 2015, and with the help of architect and sister in law Lyn NiblockAziz, he has transformed the building into the stunning restaurant it is today. Truly a family affair, Mr Aziz’s brother is a partner in the venture, his niece designed all the graphics, his cousin is the manager and his nephew works front of house. The love and passion the family have for the restaurant filters down into everything they do. I took my own brood, including children aged 5, 7 and 16, there for my birthday. The little ones don’t like food that is too spicy (korma kids) and my eldest is a vegetarian that doesn’t really eat vegetables so I was slightly worried! Well, I needn’t have been. Isram (Naj’s brother in law) who looked after us, was amazing. He suggested korma for the children, even though it wasn’t on the menu and poppadoms and chutneys appeared pretty quickly to keep the hungry children busy. To start we had the paneer and broccoli tikka (£6.50) and the sigri kebab selection (for 2) that included chicken tikka, lamb
chops and rehmi kebab (£12.50). It was exquisitely presented with vibrant pickles, purees and a range of garnishes. The chicken tikka went down a treat with my daughter (7) and the paneer was loved by my 16 year old too, a very successful start to our meal. For mains we had the junction jalfrezi (£11.95), lamb rogan josht (£12.95), vegetable biryani (£13.50) and of course the chicken korma, served with pulao rice (£3.50) and a selection of nan breads (£2.50 - £2.95). All the food was delicious and cooked to perfection. The keema nan, always a good indicator, was packed with really tasty meat. Stuffed to the max we still managed to order a few puddings. The chocolate fondant was divine and the coconut icecream, served in a half coconut with all the trimmings was devoured by my 5 year old. All in all a fantastic evening. If you are looking for that wow factor then look no further than Masala Junction. It has it all. © Cat Hedges

Why do we eat Turkey at Christmas? Over recent years one might think we have become a little tired of the traditional turkey, with lots of celebrity chefs offering a range of alternatives - going back to the traditional Dickensian goose, or a stunning beef rib roast, duck, fish or more exotic combinations from cuisines around the world. But for most of us, Christmas simply wouldn’t be Christmas without a turkey, around 76% of us have it as the centrepiece of our festive meal. It wasn’t always the case of course, turkeys were first brought to Britain around 1526 but it remained a rare luxury. Instead, people ate goose but also roast swan, pheasant, peacock and even roast boar’s head decorated with holly and fruit. Rumour has it that Henry VIII was the first English king to eat turkey, although Edward
VII is said to have made eating turkey fashionable at Christmas. Indeed, turkey was pretty much a luxury right up until the 1950s when they became more widely available and refrigerators became commonplace, and now 10 million of them are eaten in the UK every year. Apparently, and this won’t come as much of a surprise to most of us… it is women who are mostly responsible for preparing the Christmas lunch with 67% of British women being in charge of the feast every year, although most of us don’t go for our first “solo” attempt until we are at least 34! Whatever you are eating for your Christmas lunch, or enjoying over the seasonal holidays, make the most of it, and soon the nights will be getting lighter again.

Salmon with Clementines, Vodka and Honey, with a Horseradish Crème Fraiche. Ingredients For the Fish... zest & juice 4 clementines & 1 orange, 2 further clementines sliced 100ml vodka 5 tbsp clear honey 1tsp caster sugar 1kg side of salmon, bones removed (oil the skin side before dressing) For the Crème Fraiche... 200g crème fraîche 2 tbsp creamed horseradish small pack chives, snipped salt and pepper to taste
To make the crème fraîche, mix all the ingredients together in a bowl, season with black pepper and a little salt (hold back a few chives to sprinkle on the top) When the salmon is ready, reheat the remaining glaze (add a splash of water if too thick) and brush it over the top .
Salt Rubbed Turkey with Clementine and Bay Butter (would serve approx 8) If, like most of us, you prefer a traditional turkey for lunch on the big day, why not keep the clementine theme and try this twist on the classic Christmas Day roast?
Method
Ingredients 11-12lb oven-ready turkey with giblets removed For the Salt Mix... 5 bay leaves, crumbled if dry, torn if fresh 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaf 1tsp black peppercorns 85g/ 3oz coarse sea salt zest of 1 orange
Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Line a baking tray with oiled baking parchment and place the (oiled) salmon skin side down in the middle. Slice the salmon into 8 fillets, cutting through the flesh but not the skin. Brush the salmon with the glaze, making sure you get in between the gaps. Save some for brushing on at the end. Lay the clementine slices down the centre of the fish, and bake for 20 mins.
For the Clementine and Bay Butter... 100g/ 4oz butter softened zest and juice 1 clementine splash of sherry large thyme sprig, leaves picked 2 bay leaves (fresh or dried)
Bring the clementine zest and juice, vodka and honey to a gentle bubble in a pan, season a little. Simmer for approx 10 mins until reduced, add clementine slices and simmer for a further 5 mins until soft and sticky. Remove fruit slices and set aside. Bubble the liquid until thickened and glossy.
Method Up to 24 hrs before, salt the turkey. Grind all the ingredients to make a wet salt. Sit the turkey in its roasting tin, gently rub a little vegetable oil over the bird and generously rub the salt all over. Cover with cling film and return to the fridge. To make the clementine & bay butter, mash all the ingredients together in a bowl with some seasoning and set aside. (Can be made up to 2 days ahead or frozen for up to a month) Remove the turkey from the fridge 1 hr before you want to cook it. Wipe the excess salt rub off the bird with kitchen roll and pat it dry. When you are ready to cook the bird, gently push your fingers under the breast skin from the neck cavity and loosen it from the meat, taking care not to break the skin. Rub some of the butter on the flesh under the skin and then bring the skin back over. Take the rest of the butter and rub it all over the outside of the Turkey. Cover loosely with foil and cook according to calculated cooking time. Brussels Sprouts on the Side
Do you love them or hate them? Apparently, it’s all down to your genes. Some people can taste a bitter chemical in this traditional veg and some can’t. If you want to serve them to a mixed group, how about combining sultanas, toasted pine nuts, caramelised onions, sherry and a drizzle of honey for something a bit exotic, or perhaps try shredding them and stir-frying with garlic and smoked streaky bacon (just don’t burn the garlic!)

Put some space between you and what troubles you this New Year. Consciously retreat to find a dark, quiet corner… and don’t return until you have found a light. Bring it forth with solutions which benefit all, protect you now and, importantly, don’t damage anyone’s future prospects. Slow down over this process, neutralise your emotions, play ‘the long game’. Have faith in ‘being nice’, and act as though the Universe (and Karma) is watching you!
Oh, do stop faffing and LEAVE! All plans and no action = no results. You can’t expect things to improve if you languish in the same conditions. Stop procrastinating and obsessing, and move on. The positive energy of this relationship / job / arrangement has run dry; denying this will just constrain you in this increasingly painful place. You ARE strong enough, you WILL survive. Wiser, tougher and ready for new energy to replace what was lost.

Ready for change? I hope so. Ever noticed how when you alter one thing, it knocks on across your life? This year is going to mark the start of such a chain reaction- a powerful new (or a deeper) love, a sharpening of skills and focus in your career, even moving towards self employment and, importantly, releasing some of the burdens and baggage you carry. But where will the domino effect start?.. You choose!
Someone, or something, isn’t being straight with you. Can you sense it? You’re adept at recognising insincerity, but you’ve been missing the signals here. They’re fleeting and in your periphery vision, vs straight ahead. Re-tune. Can you sense it now? Don’t be scared of what you’ll find if you dig. Nothing worth knowing is found on the surface. Find the culprit, release this energy, and unleash a host of new opportunities and changes thus thwarted by this ‘bad apple’.

Carry on Karting! WIN one of 5 x £80 activity vouchers* Langar Karting and Quad Centre is one of the largest activity centres in the country, offering a huge range of activities for all age ranges. I took four boys for a day of karting and quad biking; what a fantastic experience! We received a really warm welcome from Chris, the manager. The centre is well organised and very professional. You really feel you are in safe hands. The massive indoor karting circuit is great. After a safety briefing, we were let lose in the 270cc/50mph karts. There is a 150 foot long flyover bridge as well as a tricky hair-pin corner. You also get feedback after your go, giving you all the crucial stats so you can see who went the fastest. The boys absolutely loved it. “awesome”, “mint” and “really good fun” were their words. We then moved outside to the quad bikes. These were also a really good buzz and the boys were in their element. As well as quads the centre also has 400cc off road buggies, archery, laser clay pigeon shooting and paintballing, all ideal for team building and corporate events or stag and hen parties. There were a couple of parties going on while we were there and they looked like they were having a whale of a time. Chris, the manager said; “individuals and small groups are also very welcome. Our junior quad biking
parties are particularly popular.” (Prebooking is advised.) With Christmas approaching Langar Karting and Quad Centre is the ideal choice for Christmas parties or why not treat somebody to an Activity Gift Voucher? The centre is only 15 minutes drive from Nottingham City Centre. It took us about 30 minutes from Arnold but it is a lovely drive and well worth it. We are already planning another trip. © Gary Monks

Visit Gillotts Christmas Remembrance Trees this year they will be raising funds for Nuthall and District Community First Responders by giving £1 for every message in memory of a loved one placed on the trees.
Although they have been serving their local communities for generations, Gillotts Funeral Directors recently celebrated their first birthday – in November 2015, they took the bold step of uniting all of their funeral homes under a single name, a move which coincided with the move of their Kimberley funeral home into larger premises in a former Methodist Church. “Beforehand, families struggled to understand that our funeral homes in Eastwood, Kimberley, Heanor and Stapleford were part of the same business” explains Funeral Director and partner in the business Joanne Hutsby. “Our new identity unifies us, and with the recent opening of our Selston premises, people can choose whichever of our funeral homes is most convenient to them, but know that it’s the same people that they’re dealing with.”
“This dedicated team is based in Nuthall, but covers the whole of our area from Stapleford in the South to Selston in the North and into Derbyshire covering the Heanor area. The small team consists entirely of volunteers who can attend before an ambulance is able to arrive and give vital first aid and reassurance” explained Joanne. “We hope that we can raise enough money to buy a defibrillator for the volunteers to carry with them, and help them save lives.” Anyone unable to visit in person to place their messages can do so via Gillotts’ facebook pages or by telephoning their offices.
Their Christmas Remembrance Trees will be in place at all five of their funeral homes during December, and To advertise call 0115 926 9777 or email: sarah@ngmagazines.org.uk

Special Recognition for Local Volunteers
Volunteers from Eastwood and Kimberley were amongst those from all over Notts who were honoured at a celebratory tea party given by Girlguiding Nottinghamshire back in September. Held at Portland College in Mansfield, the event gave new County Commissioner Jackie Brocklehurst the opportunity to present some 60 members and supporters with awards to mark their exceptional commitment and achievements. These included Beauvale Division’s Nicola Dougherty and Mandy Turgoose (Oak Leaf Awards), and Vicky Stanton (30 Year Long Service Award). ‘I continue to be bowled over by the enthusiasm and commitment of our volunteers – they all deserve awards really!’ said Jackie Brocklehurst. ‘But the people we applauded today have given truly exceptional service to Girlguiding in Nottinghamshire. It was both a pleasure and a privilege to formally recognise their role in ensuring that the opportunities created through Girlguiding membership are kept open for so many local girls and young women.’ Girlguiding Nottinghamshire currently has a membership of around 9,000 girls and young women. Adult supporters are essential if units are to remain active, and enquiries about volunteering are always welcome: call the county office on 0115 987 7220, e-mail countycommissioner@ girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk or visit www.girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk

Don’t plan another diet for January
Don’t diet plan Christmasexpect is a timea of family get togethers, log fires, mulled wine and fantastic food.
For the majority of us, this is also a time of expanding waistlines. We merrily guzzle down several large Christmas dinners, cheese and lots of lovely sweet things, all in preparation for the big January slim down. We tell ourselves it’s ok to overeat because come January, we will be our slimmest ever. We will start by cutting everything bad out, we will join a gym and our willpower will be at the highest possible level. But first, let’s just eat all the chocolate in the house to make sure it doesn’t tempt us later.
successfully. The question does however remain: did they achieve this just through a January crash diet? Aside from setting realistic expectations for this January, it’s worth mentioning that establishing healthy habits takes time. In fact, it may take up to 3 months for Evidence based science a single habit to stick. So what can you really do? As a nutritionist, one of the concerning patterns I always see is lack of nutrients in the average diet. Marginal deficiencies in vitamins and minerals don’t just lead to food cravings but they also result in generally poor health.
If you are planning yet another diet in January, give up before you start, dieting simply doesn’t work. This isn’t some kind of backward psychology aimed at gearing you uppersonal to prove me wrong, it is merely stating the simple It’s fact that diets don’t succeed long term.
Instead of focusing on calorie counting this January, What nutritional help with? why not can change to adding therapy in more vitamins and minerals. Since the majority of these reside in a variety of plants, switching half of what you eat to vegetables will not only result in a naturally lower calorie intake but it’ll also fill your body with the kind of nutrients it really needs.
Sure, we have all heard of a miraculous weight loss achievement that some internet sensation has achieved, maybe you even know someone that has slimmed down
If you have the budget, working with a registered nutritionist may be a good starting point in establishing healthier habits for life.

pets Tiny Survivor Porthos Helps Charity Appeal For Kitten Food Nottingham charity, Animal Accident Rescue Unit, is asking the public for kitten food and litter donations for its new arrivals. Whilst thankfully most kittens are found with their mums, sadly some like Porthos are orphaned. The charity was alerted after Porthos' mum was found giving birth outside, but sadly she and his siblings died owing to complications. Despite initial doubts over his survival, Porthos, like his musketeer namesake, has shown huge courage as his fosterer confirms: ‘It's hard work looking after a kitten this young, but seeing him reach the crucial four-week mark, healthy and lively, is wonderful.’

It is only owing to the dedication of the charity’s fantastic fosterers, plus donations, that it can help so many kittens and mum-cats; last year this was 30 kittens and five mothers. Kitten food and litter donations can be made by calling the Pet Food Co-ordinator on 07949-780918 or by emailing admin@ aaru.org.uk. Financial donations are gratefully received via the ‘donate’ page at www.animalaccident.org.uk The charity does not deal with healthy strays/unwanted pets, but helps neglected, injured or vulnerable animals and birds. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should leave a detailed message on 01159321555. For all animals needing homes visit www.animalaccident.org.uk. Kimberley Bowls Club Over the last few years, as many people in the Kimberley, Nuthall and Giltbrook area already know, we have started off the bowling season by hosting an 'Open Weekend'. It is initially designed to promote the game of bowls but also proves to be a fun weekend for everyone and the opportunity to join the club should you wish. Next year will be no different. Free hot drinks will be available from 1pm - 4.30pm on both Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th April. We have several sets of bowls for you to use, all you have to do is turn up! Our members will be easily recognizable wearing our new 'Blue and Red Shirts' and will be on hand to answer questions whilst helping with the bowling where required.

During the 2015 season we won the midweek 3x3 league and came second in the Ashfield 4x2 league gaining promotion in both. This year, after a very tight last match we managed to win the Ashfield 4x2 league and will again be rewarded by promotion. For the 2017 season we are dropping one of our evening leagues and joining two afternoon leagues which should prove popular with the members and together with thirteen internal club competitions played throughout the season there is plenty of opportunity for a game. A reminder about the 'Open Weekend' will be in the NG16 mag during February/March and again in April/May, in the meantime we have our annual 'Presentation Evening/ Carvery' to look forward to at the Hog's Head at Awsworth where Andrew and his staff make us very welcome. As you can see there is plenty going on at Kimberley Bowls Club so make a point of dropping in for a look around and meet the members of a very friendly club.

Refurbished Eastwood Chapel Opens Its Doors Eastwood cemetery chapel opened its doors to the public at the end of October following work to restore the building following an arson attack in 2014. Work has focused on stabilising the building and rebuilding the roof as well as replacing damaged stone windows and adding a new accessible toilet, kitchen facilities, drainage and electrics as well as IT links.
Before
The fire, in April 2014 gutted the Cemetery Chapel and following initial work to ensure the building was structurally sound, a public consultation took place on the future of the site. The building has had a variety of uses since ceasing to be a service chapel in After 2004. With this restoration and with provision of improved amenities, its initial intended use is as a satellite Housing Office. The majority of the costs of the work have been funded by the Council’s insurers. Eastwood School Children Discover Reality of Prison Life
Teenagers from Hall Park Academy, Eastwood were given a unique insight into life behind bars recently as they took part in a ‘Prison Me – No Way’ session to learn more about the causes, consequences and penalties of crime and the effects of antisocial behaviour. All Year 8 pupils at the school attended the sessions, where they met serving prisoners to hear their stories about how crime had impacted on their lives and those around them. The sessions, run by Prison Officers, are just one of a number of education initiatives taking place in the North of Broxtowe Borough to raise awareness about and reduce anti-social behaviour and crime in the local community. Just some of the comments from the students about whether they will change their behaviour following the session include: “By being more aware of others doing wrong and by leaving bad situations” “By standing up for myself and not be so easily pushed to do things I don’t want to” “I won’t get involved in serious situations and will focus more on me and my career rather than my friends” For more information, please contact Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 917 3744, email spc@broxtowe.gov.uk or visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/communitysafety

: Blair W itch s w ie v e R ! Bur ton ping Again m a C g in o G er So I’m Nev Originally known as ‘The Woods’, this secret sequel to the revolutionary The Blair Witch Project, a horror film that rocked, terrified and inspired the industry and it’s audiences, has a lot on its shoulders. But with some great talent behind it, most notably the director Adam Wingard, the movie had some safe hands to lead the audience’s quivering ones through this camping trip from hell. The story sees James and his friends enter those creepy woods searching for his long lost sister Hannah, one of the people who went missing after the events of the first Blair Witch. With six new victims to play with, the Blair Witch gets up to her old tricks of tormenting and terrifying not only those unfortunate campers on a mission, but also her favourite victims, the audience. The pacing in this film is great. In all great horror films the pacing raises the tension slowly, precisely and unbearably until a finale of pure fear has gripped the audience. While the beginning third of the film felt a bit boring, what it lacked in excitement it made up for in laying the groundwork for some eye popping revelations later. It also added juicy depth to the Blair Witch myth, one which fans have been baffled by since the end credits of the first film. When this movie switches into high gear, it does so with a vengeance. Even as I am writing this, going through the spine chilling moments in my head, I have to keep checking my surroundings, just making sure nothing is about to go bump in the mid-day! There were moments when I just couldn’t take another second of how intensely terrifying this film was becoming and I checked out the cinema steps instead. There is one weak aspect of this film and that is the characters. The six victi – I mean protagonists of this film are your stereotypical, vanilla, cookie cutter characters that don’t bring anything new or interesting to the film or to the genre. The acting in the first third of this film is serviceable
at best and some of the characters are strangely really difficult to like. However, when the £$*% hits the fan you can’t help but root for most of them. Hell when tears were flowing and screams were echoing through the trees I couldn’t help but completely buy into their dynamics and pray for them. That alone is testament to the power of the film. In most films if you don’t warm to the characters, you normally can’t wait for them to get their just desserts, but in Blair Witch the scenarios are so terrifying you don’t want anyone to have to go through this. In short, this movie screwed me up. If you’re in the mood for major paranoia in the light or dark and haunting images that you can’t get out of your mind, then this terrorising ride of a horror film is the one for you, good luck. Blair Witch = 8/10 © Sam Burton (aged 19)

Beware of Online Fraud... With Christmas just around the corner, it’s important to consider the growing problem of online fraud which happens often at this time of year. You need to know how to stay safe whilst online to avoid the fraudsters, who could potentially ruin your Christmas. Online Shopping: For most people with busy schedules around this time of year, the common solution is to opt for online shopping, however, with this, comes risk. For example, items may not always appear as advertised, or, worse still, not show up at all. Try to stick to well-known retailers and always check if the item you’re buying can be returned. Children with new gadgets: They’ve been begging you all year and you finally surprise your child with a new laptop, but be aware of the dangers and get your child clued up on being cyber safe. Make sure you get good anti-virus software, but also check out the www. getsafeonline.org website, which has excellent free advice, as does the Child Exploitation
Online Protection Agency’s www.thinkyouknow.co.uk site Money transfers: When using apps like eBay and Depop, it is important to be aware of scammers. More often than not, a seller will want you to transfer the money using a safe payment page such as ‘’Paypal’’ or ‘’Depop wallet’’ so, if needs be, a refund can be issued. Alarm bells should start to ring if the seller wants to use a different method. Make sure you always check existing feedback given to the seller, as this can be a very good indicator of how reliable they are. If you are unfortunate enough to fall victim to online fraud over the Christmas period, don’t hesitate to contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 040 or at www. actionfraud.police.uk
Special Constabulary Recruitment - Are you interested in becoming a Special Constable? To find out more about our pre-recruitment awareness events please contact us on 101 Ext: 800 2429 or visit www.nottinghamshire.police.uk and follow the Specials link
