Some ‘new news’ is going to spice things up.
Turn a new leaf that a Future You will thank you for.
A spell of apathy is drawing to a close; accelerated by a piece of heart-warming, wonderful news. The kind of thing that lifts the spirits and clears the cobwebs. However, not everyone is going to be pleased for you. There might be a brief bit of jealousy or backbiting to contend with. Rise above it.
A new foresight comes into view this month about something you want to change, stop or invest in now, in order to reap the rewards in the future. This is the season to start something, however small, which can grow and evolve over time into something really beneficial for you. This year, you can make a resolution really stick.
Fire signs- Leo, Aries, Sagittarius
(Page of Coins, Six of Coins, Seven of Wands) A generous gift or opportunity for advancement lands in your lap. You’ll be the envy of others this month as something extremely beneficial to you is gifted or offered freely to you. Whether this is a windfall, investment, raise, promotion or present- accept it with good grace. And ignore any sniping from envious onlookers. You deserve this lucky break.
Water signs- Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio (Eight of Cups, Eight of Wands, King of Swords) Moving on and moving up. You’re going to go a long way in a short space of time this month- physically or emotionally. The yearning to leave and move to fresh pastures spurs you into action. Your plans are clear and practical, and you’re ready to make them real. Follow your gut instinct. Be brave. It’s time to move on.

decoration ideas, dreading a last-minute, stressful dash around town, consider having a rainy (or maybe snowy!) craft day with the kids. It’s a great way to spend time together, it costs next to nothing and they’ll be excited about giving presents (not just receiving them!). Here are our top Christmassy makes for toddlers upwards… 1. Bake Christmas cookies
A firm favourite with kids, and with sweet-toothed friends and family who receive them! You could even take the kids along to a local bakery for icing inspiration! Pick up some Christmas-shaped cookie cutters from supermarkets, eBay or Lakeland and the BBC Good Food website has lots of yummy recipes.
2. Potato-printed wrapping paper
A classic and affordable craft, cut a potato in half and carefully cut out a simple design eg a star or Christmas tree. Buy poster paint and plain paper from a craft supplier and let your kids design their own wrapping paper and gift tags – they’ll make a big impact under the tree.
3. Hand (and foot!) printed cards
You can’t have a craft session without a bit of mess! Little ones will love dipping their feet in green paint and adding a footprint to a blank card. Add three finger-printed red ‘berries’ so it looks like mistletoe hanging down, and caption it ‘under the mistletoes!’ Alternatively, handprints of green paint overlapping in a circle make a lovely Christmas wreath card.
4. Jam jar candle holders
Simple and effective, empty glass jars make lovely candle holders. Children can decorate the outside by adding glue and then sticking sequins, glitter or tissue paper squares, or tying their favourite Christmas ribbon around the top. Add a candle and watch the light shine through beautifully. And if your children are too young for real candles, you can pick up battery-operated tea-lights – safe and still bright!
Happy Christmas crafting!

Sensational Bill’s
by Cat Hedges
B
ill’s started with humble beginnings as a tiny grocery shop just off the high street. A few years later after moving to new premises it was hit by a flood in 2000! Not being deterred Bill’s opened again but this time with a café and became a bit of a sensation. The restaurant itself has a modern, rustic feel with bunches of dried chilli’s hanging from the ceiling and shelves containing Bill’s jams and bottles of dressings for sale. We were greeted by a very friendly waitress who really looked after us. A great touch was when she brought the kids starter out with the drinks – a blessing when you have a very hungry child. We chose wild mushroom soup £5.75, crumbed halloumi sticks £5.95, golden fried pork sesame dumplings £5.95 & dakkochi chicken skewers £6.50 to start. All delicious and very fresh. For mains we had macaroni cheese £9.95 braised lamb shank £14.95 served with fresh mint, parsley and a red wine gravy, it fell off the bone and was devine, a 10oz sirloin steak £18.50 and a 14oz ribeye £21.95 both cooked to perfection and very tasty. Then my favourite bit, for desserts we chose warm scones, our waitress
very kindly let us have them from the teatime menu £4.95, melting chocolate bombe £6.95 served with a hot caramel sauce which was poured over the bombe at the table to melt the top – great fun. Warm chocolate brownie £5.95 and warm cinnamon doughnuts £5.95. All yummy and finished our meal off perfectly. The kids menu is really good value at £6.95 for 3 courses and a drink, starting with crispy tortilla chips, Harry then chose little Bills hamburger , which was not little but he polished it off no problem, and ice cream for pudding. All in all a great family meal and I will definitely be returning to try the chocolate bombe for myself!

Christmas Puddings Well, the festive season is upon us, time to stop worrying about the calories and instead indulge ourselves in the treats and sweets associated with Christmas. Around the world, where Christmas is celebrated, the holiday season is a time for traditional cakes, bakes and puddings. In France the “Bûche de Noël”, a classic chocolate covered Yule log cake is a Christmas centrepiece, in Germany “pfeffernüsse” cookies served from the 6th December, are covered in icing sugar and full of a mix of warm spices. “Struffoli” in Italy are little nuggets of fried dough with lemon zest served on Christmas Eve, and of course we are all now familiar with the traditional Pannettone. In Sweden, a classic rice pudding with cinnamon
is staple part of the festive menu, along with sweet gooey “lussekatter” buns. Our own traditional Christmas Pudding is believed to date back to the 14th century when it was a porridge of beef and mutton with raisins, currants, prunes, wines and spices, over time it evolved into the plum pudding we know today, despite being banned in 1664 by the Puritans as a “bad custom”. Even though it enjoys a long history, not everyone enjoys this rich fruit pudding, so here are few alternative ideas for festive treats, if you fancy a change this holiday. Have a lovely Christmas, the diet can start in January!

Christmas “Mess” Ingredients • 200g Greek yoghurt • 300ml double cream • 2tbsp lemon curd • 250g frozen mixed berries • 2tbsp cassis (optional) • 1 small pinch cinnamon • 4 individual meringues (use the good ones you get from delis/ farmshops or make your own) Method 1. In small saucepan gently heat the frozen berries, sugar and cinnamon until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat, add cassis and set aside to cool. 2. Whip the double cream and yoghurt until it holds its shape, drizzle through the lemon curd. 3. Break up the meringues into a bowl then spoon over half the cream then half the berries and repeat. Serve straight away.
Satsumas in a Caramel Syrup Ingredients • 75g caster sugar • 40ml fresh orange juice • 6 whole, peeled satsumas, pith removed (to remove pith, dunk peeled satsuma for a few seconds in boiling water and allow to cool) Method 1. (Take extreme care when boiling sugar, do not overheat) Put the sugar and 75ml warm water into a pan. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves and then allow to bubble gently until you have a golden caramel. As soon as the sugar is starting to brown remove from heat and allow to cool a little. Add the juice (stand well back, it will spit! - I used a splatter guard), stir gently until smooth. 2. In a large bowl pour the syrup over the satsumas. Allow to cool, serve with a qood quality vanilla ice-cream.

Prosecco: A Joy of Life! There are many producers of sparkling, aromatic, prosecco wine. For this quest I searched for a company that produces a range of high quality prosecco wines, with impressive bottle presentations. Bottega has a very interesting history, both during the 20th century and into the 21st century. The eye-catching bottles and a great number of the wines are award-winning. The bottles are created by artisan crafts people and are really distinguishable. From their prosecco range I found the following to be very impressive. Bottega Poeti Prosecco (DOC) is fresh, fragrant and has a floral bouquet. This wine is a very popular, dry production and favoured by many. Bottega Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore (DOCG) Extra Dry is another poets’ wine which is also very popular. Having a brilliant straw-yellow colour, too, this fresh and fragrant wine graces many dining occasions, regularly. Bottega Prosecco (DOC) Biologico Extra Dry is often chosen and has many devotees. This organic production is, again, a brilliant straw-yellow colour. Very fine, fresh, fruity and delicate is how I would describe this, much sought-after, prosecco. Bottega Prosecco (DOC) Fundum I found to be a splendid dry production, that has plenty of fruits, to please. The mouthfeel and palate sensation is fresh, with a good finish. Gold Poeti Prosecco (DOC) is a further very classy production from Bottega. Fresh, aromatic and very impressive, this wine comes in a magnificent gold-coloured bottle. Again, a fruity bouquet prevails, which leads, enticingly, to the wonderful mouthfeel. The palate is treated to a sensation that is impressively pleasant and memorable. The glamour of the bottle presentation adds to the pleasures of this production, which is extremely popular for special occasions and also makes a really wonderful gift. Prosecco wines, having a persistent and fine perlage, are perfect for apÊritifs and excellent to pair with starters, also fish, seafood and
white meats. Prosecco and other wines, including grappa, plus liqueurs, along with a range of other products, are all made with much knowledge, love and devotion, so the finished Bottega productions are of the highest quality and quite exceptional. www.bottegaspa.com As always, Enjoy!

WHAT IS CBT? I
f you read this column regularly, you might get to the bottom of the page and see in the blurb that I am a CBT therapist. You may have heard of CBT before or it might be a complete mystery to you, so I thought I would spend this article explaining a little bit about CBT and what you can expect if you see a CBT therapist. And unlike more than one caller I have had enquiring after my services, I’m not talking about Compulsory Basic Training for motorcyclists… Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT for short, is a form of short-term psychotherapy. It’s a talking therapy, which allows you to work through your issues in a safe place with a therapist so that those issues no longer cause you problems in life. But rather than the cliché of therapy that you see so often on TV and in movies, it isn’t just a case of lying back on a couch whilst a therapist asks you how you feel about your father. On the contrary, CBT is interested in the here and now and making real-life changes in your present and future life, rather than going over the past. While it can sometimes be useful to know how certain problems started, the past can’t be changed so there is often little benefit to be gained from spending too much brain-space going over and over things that once happened to you. CBT works on the theory that the way you think affects the way that you feel and the way you behave and act, resulting from those thoughts. Cognitions are thoughts, so Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is about changing your dysfunctional or unhelpful thinking patterns so that your behaviour also changes. It’s about holding those unhelpful
thoughts up to the light of examination and seeing just how realistic they are – very often they’re not realistic at all and the negative feelings that follow such distorted feelings rarely make for a positive and fulfilling life. CBT is recognised by the NHS to be an effective treatment for a number of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, stress, OCDs and eating disorders amongst others. It can also help when you don’t necessarily have a “label” but you just know that you are stuck and you need some help with your thoughts or behaviour to break out of that rut. It’s considered to be a short-term therapy with most courses of treatment consisting of 12 sessions or less. It’s also considered to be a collaborative therapy – that means that you work with your therapist to develop a course of therapy that works for you, rather than your therapist simply telling you what to do. After all, we’re all different – just because two people suffer from depression or anxiety doesn’t mean that their experience of those conditions is the same. You are encouraged to work with your therapist to make sure that your treatment is unique to you and works for you. The collaborative nature also teaches you to problem-solve and to become your own therapist so that the risk of relapse is lessened. Of course, it’s not suitable for every condition and sometimes people with more complex issues or combinations of issues need a bit more help and that’s when a more open-ended, longer course of psychotherapy might be more appropriate.

AT THE HEART OF YOUR FUNERAL PLANNING When we started providing funeral pre-payment plans more than 20 years ago, the idea of ‘paying for your funeral in advance’ was quite unusual. Today, funeral plans are more well known, and available from a wide variety of sources. However, you wouldn’t buy a will from a DIY superstore, so why buy something so important from someone who knows nothing about funerals, your local area, or you. Buying a plan from Gillotts means you can sit down with one of our staff who know local facilities and talk about what you want your funeral to be like. If you wish, you can go into details: music, flowers, what everyone should wear, which photographs to Eastwood Office

Volunteering has been a vital part of my career As a young person wanting to get into the field of youth and community work, I was advised that volunteering and gaining experience was the best way to get onto the university course of my choice and to start finding paid work. With this in mind, I filled in an application form to volunteer at Rumbletums in April 2014 and came into the café to chat about what I’d be doing, why I wanted to volunteer and what I could bring to the café. Courtney made sure I was eased into life at Rumbletums and I worked one to one with different trainees each week, which helped me understand their needs and capabilities and the level of the support they each needed in completing certain tasks.

I looked forward to my two days each week at Rumbletums and I soon felt like one of the family. You soon find that each trainee comes with their own wonderful personality traits and characters and it was great working with each and every one of them. Rumbletums was a great way to increase my confidence in my own capabilities in working with young people (cementing in me that this was the career I wanted to pursue) and in my social skills. When the role of Project Manager at Rumbletums arose during my job hunt, I jumped at the chance to apply for it. I am now firmly back in the wonderful family atmosphere of Rumbletums and although it may be an entirely different role, I love it all the same. Volunteers are vital in the running of Rumbletums which is why I make sure our volunteers know they are highly valued . And as much as volunteering is important to us, volunteering can also be important to YOU as can be seen from my journey. If you are interested in volunteering with us, please come and see me in the café; I look forward to meeting you! Siobhán Drake, Project Manager

Nextdoor Network puts Nottingham in Touch with its Neighbours Over 100 Nottingham neighbourhoods have connected, thanks to the launch of an exciting new private social network, Nextdoor, as 96% of Brits say they crave a sense of community. The free network, which launched in the UK just 9 months ago, has seen the most widespread use across Nottingham in the East Midlands. Residents in 118 communities have come together at a time when one in five Brits feel lonely and one in three blame technology for stopping them getting to know their neighbours. Nextdoor’s aim is to provide a trusted forum for neighbours to work together to build stronger, safer, happier communities, a remedy for the 22% of people in the East Midlands who feel disconnected to the place they live and the 10% of people who can’t name their next door neighbour. Nottingham residents are using Nextdoor to get to know each other and the private social network is being used to organise street parties, share local advice and recommendations for babysitters or gardeners, for neighbourhood watch efforts, to find lost pets and start community fitness clubs. Designed to be simple for anyone to use – and boasting users aged between 18 all the way to 94 years old - the sign-up process is straightforward. To become a member of their Nextdoor neighbourhood, users just need to sign up with a valid email address and input their post code, at which point they’ll be able to see a map of their area, see updates and public posts, and connect with other members of their local community. Sign up to Nextdoor at nextdoor.co.uk or download the free app for iPhone or Android.

‘Active’ is the exciting new novel written by former Nottingham policeman Jonathan Nicholas, writing under the pen name Dan Hastings. It asks some very difficult questions. With the police gone, the biggest and nastiest bullies in the playground would take over, and a dark uncertain future would be the result. Influenced by writers such as George Orwell, Philip K Dick, and Ray Bradbury, with echoes of Margaret Atwood’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, ‘Active’ suggests Nottingham would be plunged into barbarism and cruelty, where beheadings and sex slaves become the norm. One reviewer stated: ‘This is darkly satirical of current Middle Eastern politics and political correctness, as well as the historical purges of Nazi Germany and Communist Russia. The setting is exactly that of DH Lawrence, his social divisions replaced by more sinister alternatives. It is a thought-provoking and uneasy read, taking events happening right now and superimposing them onto ‘middle England’, but no less compelling for it.’ ‘Active’ is available from Amazon.

Healthy Eating is for Life,
not just for Christmas
A
t this time of year, women en masse will start dieting to fit into that festive little black dress. Come January, the diet season resumes with fervour as we try to shift the weight gained from the Christmas excess. Sound familiar?
The madness is that diets don’t work for most of us - 95% will re-gain the weight and more within a year. Diets invariably make the problem worse, and can often be hazardous to our health! In fact diets are counter-productive; when we restrict calories, our bodies perceive starvation. This causes three responses: tiredness, so we conserve energy; hunger, so we prioritise food finding and slower metabolism, so we manage on fewer calories. Psychologically, humans are hard-wired to resist restrictions. What is forbidden becomes more attractive and can lead to obsessing about food. Diets tend to be all or nothing. One slip-up and we see it as total failure, often triggering a binge. The yoyo cycle starts again.
To succeed, we need to see health and, as a result, looking and feeling good as the goal rather than weight loss. By making permanent, sustainable changes to eating and lifestyle, weight loss becomes inevitable. Eating mindfully means being constantly aware of food choices. If we think about the impact of food on health, then we’re likely to make better choices. Mindful eating gives us control. Rather than grabbing and consuming chocolate without thinking, consciously consider “it’s full of sugar, damaging to health and won’t help weight loss”. Then resist, or else enjoy it as a treat. There’s no failure, no diet derailment and therefore less likelihood of having an all-out binge. Move on with your motivation and confidence intact and make the next choice a healthy one. Mindful eating takes considerable practice, but taking back control of eating and health means liberation, not deprivation. Shortened life expectancy, ill health, weight gain and depression due to poor food choices is the real deprivation. Make the decision that you’re worth the long-term investment and the benefits are lifechanging!

NEW YEAR... NEW YOU A new year is fast approaching. Are you one of the many in January who pledge to becoming a “new you”? Is changing yourself for the better on the cards in 2018? Before you set any resolutions read on...Making positive health changes does not have to be as hard as you may think. Walking 30 minutes a day in addition to your current daily activities can burn 200 - 300 extra calories per day. Do this five times a week and that’s an extra 1000 calories minimum burnt in just one week! Benefits include body fat loss, improved circulation and reduced risk of heart disease. When a “new you” is the goal, sometimes small, regular changes are best. These then become new healthy habits and before you know it you’re walking 10-20,000 steps a day without even thinking about it.
Why not give it a go? All you need is a little space and a timer. That’s it! • Static jog for 2 minutes (warm up) • Body weight squats for 30 seconds, rest for 10 seconds and repeat 6 times • High knees for 30 seconds, rest for 10 seconds and repeat 6 times • Star jumps for 30 seconds, rest for 10 seconds and repeat 6 times • Mountain climbers for 30 seconds, rest for 10 seconds and repeat 6 times • Press ups, 10 reps for 3 sets resting no longer than 30 seconds • Sit ups, 10-20 reps for 3 sets resting no longer than 30 seconds
Be patient. Small, realistic adjustments that you can maintain can make a massive difference. As can knowledge. If we knew how long it took to burn off the calories in the foods we eat, would we make more informed decisions about our diet? When you consider a 42g bar of Dairy Milk (a Christmas staple!) is about 230 calories, it might take about five minutes to eat and a split second to make the decision, but the reality is, if you already consume over the number of calories you need, you would have to walk just over 30 minutes at a normal pace to burn off that 230 calorie bar of chocolate. Here is a simple home work-out that requires no equipment, maybe a little googling and about 15-20 minutes of your time a day.
We list many fitness related articles on our website to help you take steps to becoming a “new you” this new year. We hope you have a fantastic Christmas holiday and we wish you all the best in 2018.

Lucy: looking for love Can you give a shy but loving cat a new start? Until earlier this year, Lucy and her siblings had contented lives with their owner. This all changed, however, when their owner sadly passed away – leaving the feline family homeless. Thankfully, local charity Animal Accident Rescue Unit stepped in: taking in all four cats with its volunteer fosterers. Of the four, Lucy is possibly the most overlooked with little interest so far in any home offers. As her fosterer explains: ‘Dear Lucy, once she’s given a chance and some patience, is really the most loving companion. She’s only about 6 years old; she so deserves a chance! A quiet home with older children, and as the only cat, would suit her perfectly.’ Can you help Lucy? For her details, contact the Adoption Officer at admin@aaru.org. uk, who will reply as soon as possible. All potential adoptions need a successful homecheck. Cats are not rehomed on or near busy roads, unless indoor-only. The charity hosts monthly fundraising fairs, full of lovely bargains and refreshments, with the next date being Saturday 9 December, 2-4pm, at Lowdham Village Hall, Main Street, Lowdham NG14 7BD. With no premises, animals are fostered in volunteers’ homes. The charity does not cover healthy strays/unwanted pets, but helps neglected, injured and vulnerable animals and birds. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should leave a detailed message on 0115-9321555. For all rescued animals needing homes, see www.animalaccident.org.uk.

er 2049: Blade Runn lood Flesh and B When it comes to revisiting the classic sci-fi movies of the 80s, it never goes particularly well. Will the Blade Runner sequel sully the reputation of the original cult classic or strengthen its legacy? The story of Blade Runner 2049 swaps out the grizzled human veteran detective Decker, played by Harrison Ford, for replicant (biorobotic android) detective K, played by Ryan Gosling. With the discovery of something that could shake the world of both humans and replicants to nothing but rubble, K must find who is involved and retire them, permanently. The first aspect of the film that wowed from the very start of 2049 was how amazing it sounded. The score was always pitch perfect and instantly set the mood for the scene to come. 2049’s visuals are outstanding. From the sights of a world completely taken over by ugly grey blocks that reach high into the sky, to the mind blowing work the visual effects team did on hologram girlfriend Joi (Ana de Armas), the visual trickery leaves you transfixed. Gosling was a perfect vehicle for the audience to experience the world of Blade Runner through. You can’t help but empathise with this duty bound android that feels a higher purpose to his life and can’t help but explore the possibilities of said purpose. Other stand-outs in the cast include Ana de Armas’ turn as Joi. Playing a hologram programmed to love its owner (K) is a hard character to make believable. Armas nails it and also makes the romance the character was built for, compelling enough for the audience to fall for her programming. During the film you’ll find yourself forgetting that these two were literally programmed to be in love and rooting for their happiness. Sylvia Hoeks as the villainous replicant Luv was a joy to watch. Hoek’s brings a depth
to the character that both captivates and intrigues. Programmed as Wallace’s enforcer, Hoeks’ performance felt like every fibre of her being was trying to recoil in horror from his disgusting methods, but programming rules all in the replicant’s world leading her down a dark path of yearning for supremacy over her fellow androids so she can stand side by side with her malevolent master. Hoeks’ superb acting, combined with this interesting character arch, made for a memorable and deeply compelling villain for 2049. From the incredible score, impactful sound design, awe inspiring landscapes, mind blowing visuals, twisting and compelling story, and incredible acting that has brought to life some of the most interesting and thought provoking characters of the year this film is a winner. Turn on the TV Whatever your fancy – be it baking or antique collecting, ballroom dancing or deep sea fishing – we all turn to television to enjoy it. We may want to pit our wits against a TV detective solving complex crimes; guffaw at an outrageous comedian; try to out-guess the contestants in a quiz show; or chortle at a cartoon world of frantic absurdity. We may gasp with delight as we are educated about the wonders of the world by David Attenborough. We can sit enraptured by a view of the heavens presented by a star-gazing astronomer or envy the exquisite poise and grace of a prima ballerina. Are you a sports fanatic? Savour every goal, every first past the post, every wicket, every javelin, every dart. Or a sports hater? Turn away from the bulging muscles and admire a refurbished, ruined watermill; travel behind a steam locomotive; giggle at an interview on a sofa; or discover that a pop star is descended from royalty.

of Queen Elizabeth II, with the whole nation watching. The BBC broadcast its first colour pictures from Wimbledon in 1967. Surprisingly, HD only arrived as recently as 2006, yet it seems we were never without it. With such a range of options, the era is long gone when the family settled down together in the sitting room for a shared viewing experience. It is practically unthinkable nowadays not to have a TV in every room in the house. Each member of the family can select their favoured channel, catch up on what they missed, download their holiday photos, slip in a DVD, or play a video game. Whatever your viewing choices, the chances are you will never exhaust the possibilities of this constantly evolving, endlessly versatile medium of entertainment – surely the most popular invention of all times. So, sit back and enjoy the technological miracle we all love to take for granted as part of the furniture in our home. Turn on the TV.
We may nod in to a news bulletin, catch the headlines and flick away to a favourite soap. Or we might listen carefully to the facts and figures, then shout back at the panellists taking part in the political debate that follows. Often we’ll scoff at the bright certainty of the weather forecaster gesturing towards the moving graphics. We can tell by our little personal twinges, or the way the cat is washing its face, that it’s going to rain tomorrow. And if we can find nothing appetising in all the gloom and doom of the news room or the endless repeats of elderly sit-coms, then we can select from the million and one movies available for the choosing. It is all there at the touch of a button. The world’s first regular high-definition blackand-white television service began transmitting from Alexandra Palace in London in November 1936. The outbreak of WW2 put a stop to any further developments until after 1945. In June 1953 the BBC Outside Broadcasting Unit transmitted live coverage of the coronation

It was brilliant! We thoroughly enjoyed it. 14 seconds away from success! Arghh! This just made us hungry to do it again soon. To say we were buzzing when we came out is an understatement. Local volunteers have been honoured at a special tea party given by Girlguiding Nottinghamshire. Award recipients from Beauvale Division, which extends to the west of the city, were represented by Eastwood’s Helen Reddish, who collected her 30-year service award, and by Kelly Manders, who was presented with an Oak Leaf Award in tribute to her ‘priceless commitment, time and hard work’ as Assistant Leader with 1st Greasley Guides. Held at Portland College in Mansfield in October, the event gave County Commissioner Jackie Brocklehurst the opportunity to present awards to over 50 members and supporters to mark their exceptional commitment and achievements. ‘The people we applauded today have given truly exceptional service to Girlguiding in Nottinghamshire,’ said Jackie Brocklehurst. ‘It was a real pleasure - and a privilege - to publicly acknowledge their role in ensuring that the opportunities created through Girlguiding membership are kept open for so many girls and young women across the county.’ Enquiries about volunteering with Girlguiding Nottinghamshire are always welcome: call 0115 987 7220, e-mail Jackie at countycommissioner@ girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk or visit www.girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team..... Have a safe, secure and crime-free Christmas We’ll be working hard over Christmas to keep you and your families safe, but there are also steps you can take to protect yourself. When you’re out shopping: Many of us will be on the lookout for presents for our loved ones, and buying things that may be worth a lot of money. Try and stay alert to what’s going on around you, keep valuables, credit cards and cash inside clothing or bags, and if you do feel uncomfortable, report this to your nearest police officer, store attendant or security guard. When you’re at home: After we’ve been shopping, we need somewhere to store all of those presents! By taking a few simple steps, such as making sure presents aren’t under the tree if it’s visible from windows, making your house look occupied by leaving lights on, and keeping your windows and doors locked at all times, you can reduce any risk to yourself and your property. After presents have been opened: Burglars know that many homes will have new and often expensive items following Christmas morning, especially tech such as laptops, phones, iPads, games consoles etc. To avoid drawing attention to this, think about how you dispose of packaging that could identify what’s in the house, and for valuable items, you should mark your valuables with your postcode. Find out more about this on the link below. We hope these quick steps have given you a few handy tips, and you can find even more advice about staying safe at Christmas here:http://nottinghamshire.police.uk/advice/prevention/ christmas We hope you have a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!
