HAPPY 2014
TO ALL OUR READERS!!! Another year over...where does the time go?? We hope you all had a fantastic festive season and are looking forward to 2014. We are constantly being told to eat less and move more, especially at this time of year so we decided to ask some young people to share their favourite sports with us all and give us some inspiration. See page 49. These cold, dark nights really do call for comfort food and there is none better than a steaming bowl of (healthy) stew. We have included three easy recipes to cheer you up.

STEWPENDOUS!!
Chicken, Leek & Bacon Casserole
Spanish Sausage Stew
170g chorizo - thickly sliced 8 pork sausages - each cut into 3 1 onion - roughly chopped 2 sweet potatoes - peeled & cut into chunks 1 red pepper - chopped 2 cloves garlic - chopped 1 green chilli - chopped 1 tbsp paprika 1 tbsp ground cumin red wine - small glass 400g tin chopped tomatoes 200ml chicken stock salt & pepper

Method
Heat oven to 180째C. Heat oil in ovenproof casserole. Cook chicken until golden then remove. Cook lardons for 2 mins, add leeks, garlic & thyme and cook until leeks soften (about 5 mins). Put lid on and place in oven for 45 mins then take lid off and cook for another 20 mins. Delicious with mash.
Place a heavy based pan on a medium heat. Add chorizo and fry for about 5 mins. It will release plenty of oil. Add paprika and cumin, cook for 1 min, stirring. Add wine and boil for 2 mins. Add tomatoes and stock. Simmer for 40 mins. Season to taste. First Brick Marks New Housing Development Families looking to setup home in Broxtowe Borough received a welcome in September as the first bricks were laid on a new housing development at Midland Road, Eastwood. Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Iris White was joined by Leader of the Council, Councillor Milan Radulovic to lay the first bricks during the ceremony on Thursday 12th September, along with representatives from the contractor, Midlands based Waters Homes. The properties, on the former garage site on Midland Road, consist of two family homes and four bungalows and are one of four social housing projects currently under construction in the Borough, worth over £6 million.
Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council and Portfolio for Housing, Councillor Milan Radulovic said: “Broxtowe Borough Council is committed to providing good quality, affordable homes for local people. “These new homes are just part of the Council’s plan to develop sites and build affordable homes throughout the Borough, with other projects to be developed on sites in Chilwell and Stapleford.” For more information, please contact Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 917 7777, email housing@ broxtowe.gov.uk or visit www.broxtowe.gov. uk/housing
Madhatters host Drop In Surgery for Anna Soubry MP Anna Soubry MP held a "drop in" surgery at Madhatters in Kimberley. Constituents from the town called in to the popular tea room to raise a wide range of issues and concerns with Anna. Anna said "Planning, footpaths and care for the elderly were just some of the matters raised with me - all of which I will be taking up. This is the second drop in I've held in Kimberley. The added attraction of coffee and cakes in a great setting made the surgery a huge success. I want to thank everyone who came along and Nigel and his team for allowing me to hold the surgery at Madhatters". Anna has held "drop in surgeries” where no appointment is needed, as well as her regular surgeries, throughout the Broxtowe constituency since her election in 2010. "I really enjoy getting out and meeting people - helping fix people's problems or taking up an issue of concern is one of the most rewarding parts of the job."

NottinghamLIVE.co.uk editor Darren Patterson brings us his monthly look at top Nottingham musicians. This month....BLUE VULTURE Formed in 2013 Blue Vulture are the brainchild of front man Bainy Bain, former frontman on local radio show Notts Live, after standing down from his radio presenter duties (due to family commitments) Bainy decided to return to the Nottingham music scene, this time as a performer rather than commentator.
With the band line up completed the band wasted no time in getting out playing with their debut gig coming just four weeks after forming as part of a Launchpad event at Nottingham venue The Doghouse, the set went down well, with recordings on it featuring on Trent Sound show Night Owl, and the band were invited to support The Others on a part of their 2013 UK Tour with Dominic Masters, of The Others, describing Blue Vulture as “great infectious songs and amazing stage presence”. Describing themselves as producing “joyful indie rock with a bitter and hateful undertone” Blue Vulture are geared up for a great 2014 with several high profile gigs and festival spots lined up, plus a debut EP is scheduled for release in February.
Bainy teamed up with old comrade, bassist and songwriter RP Sutton, with whom he has had a long standing working relationship, most notably as a part of award winning band Noel Street. A search for further members led to the recruitment of guitarist Big Dave Sansom and, finally, drummer Phil “The Greek” Foster on drums.
For more on Blue Vulture and to check out their music visit their Facebook page NottinghamLIVE.co.uk is an online entertainment magazine focusing on local creative talent. Check out the website or follow them on Twitter @nottinghamlive

Readers may remember Belle – the cat who was left horrifically scalded and badly burnt by someone – but thankfully rescued by Nottinghamshire’s Animal Accident Rescue Unit. After painstaking care and kind donations from volunteers and supporters, this local small charity is pleased to report that Belle is now looking and feeling much better – but is still sadly experiencing problems with her appalling wound. Entirely run by volunteers and donation-funded, the charity is determined to make Belle more comfortable, by finding an effective way to prevent Belle from scratching her wound and reopening it - as without it healing completely, Belle will be unable to enjoy a normal ‘cat’ life. Since her trauma, Belle has been living with a kind foster volunteer, who comments: ‘Belle’s looking great given what she’s been through; her coat’s growing back beautifully, but it can take as long as a year for cats to break a self-scratching habit, so anything to help beat this will help her.’ Belle would love either a special comfort, protective collar – or indeed claw clips, for which the charity is thus appealing for donations - as these will make a real difference to this little cat who has endured so much pain. Donations can be made online via the charity’s secure website at www.animalaccident.org.uk/donate, or by posting a cheque made payable to ‘Animal Accident Rescue Unit’, noting it is for ‘Belle’ to Animal Accident Rescue Unit, PO Box 5414, Nottingham NG14 5DT.

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team..... As we look forward towards the Easter holidays, it is a reminder that we will soon be putting the clocks forward. The nights will get lighter and we will lose an hour, but that is not all you could be losing this Spring time if you do not secure your belongings. Shed breaks are an easy way for thieves to get the upper hand. I am sure that if you think about your shed, you certainly wouldn’t want to go without your bike, your lawnmower, or even your expensive power tools. If this is the case, make this month the time to up your shed security. To secure your shed, invest in a good quality padlock that can’t be easily broken. Though it may seem like a lot of money now, I guarantee it will be worth it instead of having to replace all your shed valuables. If you have expensive items in your shed, always make sure to note down the serial numbers and photograph any valuables so you have a better chance of getting them back. Installing an outdoor security light which is activated my movement could be enough to make thieves think twice before breaking in, but as an extra precaution, you might want to consider installing a shed alarm as well. But if you’re short on cash, there are cheaper ways to up your security. Planting thorny bushes could make all the difference and protect you from being the next victim of shed crime. Plant
these next to walls and fences for maximum protection. And as the nights get lighter you may be thinking that you are out of the woods when it comes to having to increase your own personal safety, but dark or not, thieves will not rest. Theft from the person increases around this time of year, with mobile phones the most commonly stolen items in the UK, so make sure that you don’t become the next target for opportunists. I am sure that for many of you, your phones are among your most valued belongings, but having them on show when you’re out and about could leave you counting the cost of doing so. But why you? You might think that phone theft won’t happen to you, and that it is safe to have your phone out just this once, but is it really worth taking the risk? Could you justify shelling out hundreds of pounds to replace an iPhone, just for the sake of replying to that one text while you’re walking down the street? Or think of it this way – would you keep a bundle of cash poking out of your back pocket or on the table of a café or bar? The chance of becoming a victim of crime, no matter what the crime, is never worth taking a risk. If you have been a victim of crime or know somebody who has been, call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously, and help us to keep your area a safe place to live and work.

Getting the most from sixth form....
I hate pressure. I am also very pathetic at making decisions; so when someone puts pressure on me to make a decision it never goes too well. School is always putting me in this position and most recently they asked me to start applying to sixth form and college. That is a lot of pressure around a big decision.
Ella Higginbotham aged 16
I’ve heard so many people say that A-levels are one of the hardest things you will ever do (I know this because my 17 year old sister makes the stresses of it all very clear) so this doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence for the next two years. However, they say if you keep doing the things you enjoy then you will get through it, and that’s where I intend to start! My main priority is having friends that keep me grounded; whether that is the friends at my current school or making friends at a new college or sixth form. Surrounding yourself with a good group of people is just as important as everything academic, so try not to get too caught up in it all and remember the people that will help keep you sane through it! Of course I am not saying that the education side isn’t important, because actually in the end that is the whole point, so you do have to focus on what your strengths are. Choose a sixth form/ college where you will feel comfortable with the people and that offers the facilities that you would personally benefit from; choose your subjects wisely, think about that final results day and which subjects you feel you can really achieve in! Other than that, you have to remember that sixth form and college is an experience. Despite what you probably think, it isn’t there to try and ruin your life but to help build your dream future. My parents always tell me stories of how when they were in sixth form (which Next was a looooong time ago) they would sit and play games in the common room issue: and not put too much pressure on themselves. They are both happy and in good jobs and this helps put things into perspective for me. So take the Handling opportunity, have fun getting to know new people and take the challenges in Friends your stride because if you let stress take over then sixth form could be your worst enemy!

WHAT’S YOUR WORTH? The real value of many people’s incomes has shrunk considerably over the past few years as wages fail to keep up with inflation. This coupled with a large number of employers struggling to maintain their workforce let alone offer pay increases has created a culture of “put up and shut up” which is demotivating and negative which in turn inhibits growth. As the economic forecasts at the start of this New Year continue to show steady signs of recovery some of you will be considering a career move where potentially you feel you will be better rewarded and valued. I would always advise caution in this scenario. A proven track record with one employer is still an asset on your CV rather than jumping ship every few years or so. Knowing how to negotiate a pay increase is a skill once learnt that will serve you well throughout your working life. When setting out to achieve this, your attitude towards the exercise is key. It’s not a case of ‘me v. them’ rather an aim to work in partnership so that both parties are satisfied with the outcome. Here are my recommendations to consider when planning this type of negotiation. • Timing – judge your request on your knowledge of your employer’s current situation. If there are redundancies pending then it’s most definitely not the right time to try and negotiate. It would be far better to raise the matter at the time of a personal review or appraisal. • Research – The internet is very effective for assessing current market values. Look at job adverts, salary surveys and social media ie LinkedIn to see what salaries are being offered. You could also speak to colleagues within your current organisation doing similar roles – however

be careful with this as some employment contracts contain restrictive covenants which do not allow employees to discuss remuneration with each other. • Communicate – Even if your immediate line manager is not the ultimate decision maker they are likely to be involved at some point in the process so do make them aware of your intentions. • Be specific – build your case with solid examples of results that demonstrate your value. Can you use recommendations from colleagues who work with you on a daily basis? • Discuss – by definition negotiation is about discussion and compromise. It makes sense to demonstrate a level of flexibility. If budgetary restraints prohibit any chance of a salary increase maybe extra holidays or a bonus scheme would be acceptable? • Be quiet – know when to not speak. Don’t commit to an offer immediately – take time to consider. When closing your discussions be gracious, professional and polite. The world of work is actually a very small place and with social media and networking sites becoming increasingly powerful you never know who is talking to whom. Make sure your professional reputation remains unblemished.
