Ways to save money in 2016 by Sarah Pennells

1. Check your bank statements carefully. It sounds

obvious but you might find you’re paying for things you don’t need or use anymore (such as a magazine subscription etc). You may even find you’re still paying for insurance with your old company. It’s more common than you think!

2. Switch to 0% credit cards, if you owe money on

your cards. You’ll normally need a fairly good credit record in order to do this, but there are some competitive interest-free deals at the moment. There are online card matching tools (Noddle and Confused.com have them) which will tell you in advance which cards you’d be likely to be accepted for.

3. Pay down the most expensive debt first. If you

can’t get a 0% credit card deal and you owe money at different interest rates, the most effective way to pay off your debts is to pay as much as you can on the debt charging the highest rate of

interest. Pay the minimum or what you need to on your other cards and loans and then move onto the one charging the next highest rate of interest, until they’ve all been repaid.

4. Eat what you’ve bought! Most of us throw away

food from time to time, but very few of us would throw away £5 notes! Try and use food you’ve already bought. Freeze cheese and butter, puree soft fruit and freeze it and make soups from tired looking vegetables (it’s amazing what a bit of seasoning can do!).

5. Check what you’re paying for things like your

phone, broadband and energy. Don’t switch energy provider unless you have a year’s worth of bills in front of you, otherwise it’s impossible to know what you could save. Compare deals on price comparison sites, and make sure you’re looking at all the deals, not just those they get a commission on. Check out the customer service ratings as well as the price. There’s no point in saving a few pounds if the energy supplier is incapable of producing an accurate bill!

RIGHT ON THE MONEY IS BACK FOR A NEW SERIES FEELING THE PINCH AFTER CHRISTMAS? MADE A NEW YEARS RESOLUTION TO START SAVING MONEY?

Denise Lewis and Dominic Littlewood are back looking for people to take part in this unmissable series that aims to find simple ways to save you money. Do you find you’re always short of cash but unsure where all your money goes? Perhaps you’re trying to free up money for a holiday, a new car, or to plan for retirement. Or maybe you’d just benefit from having an expert give your finances an overhaul. Whatever the reason, we’d like to help find solutions, get you the best deals – and free up more of the cash you need. Help others get connected and become a Nottinghamshire Digital Champion “One lady I know just wants to be able to Skype and FaceTime her daughter in New Zealand. I think that’s where being a Digital Champion can make a real difference”. Joe, Nottinghamshire Digital Champion Nottinghamshire County Council is calling on local residents to join their growing community of Digital Champions Being able to use the internet is an essential skill in this modern world, however many people are missing out because they’re not online. In fact an estimated 1 in 5 UK adults¹ don’t have ‘basic digital skills’ and in Nottinghamshire alone around 1 in 7 local residents² have never used the internet. In May this year the Council launched the Nottinghamshire Digital Champions Network (NDCN) as part of the Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire Programme. So far over 50 volunteers have got involved to help residents and businesses use the internet. If you are passionate about life online, you can be a Nottinghamshire Digital Champion. You don’t need to be an IT whizz; just have some basic digital skills, a bit of spare time and a willingness to help others. In return you’ll get free training and support, certificates and badges to add to your CV and a great feeling of personal satisfaction! Visit www.digitalchampionsnetwork.com/ nottinghamshire or email ndcn@digitalunite. com

7 Expert Tips For Job Hunting in 2016 Now that Christmas has been celebrated it’s time to look ahead to 2016. This is when we all have the most enthusiasm and motivation to achieve our goals. To help you with your job search in 2016, here are some expert tips to remember: 1. Make use of social media tools like Twitter. Jacob Share at JobMob recommends taking to Twitter to find a new job, starting with personal branding and networking with key contacts in your industry. 2. Refresh and revamp your CV. The first day of January is the ideal time to give your CV a spruceup. Key points to remember – keep your CV concise and job-relevant, avoid obvious clichés like ‘team player’ and ‘conscientious worker’ and bring to the fore your unique selling points (USPs). 3. Make a list of your best personal qualities. According to Tanya de Grunwald, founder of GraduateFog.co.uk, we shouldn’t all be solely focused on degrees and qualifications. Personal qualities matter too, such as being really good with people, coming up with innovative ideas or teaching others. 4. Research your chosen industry and talk to key players. If you’re serious about working in a particular industry, you need to know it inside-out, as well as all the latest developments and trends. 5. Practice interviewing. You might feel a little silly, but practising interviewing with friends or family can help you to be prepared and polished when it comes to the real thing. ExpertBeacon.com recommends working on answering and asking questions, body language and eye contact, as well as that allimportant interview wardrobe. 6. Create a system and a strategy for job-hunting. You need to be organised, targeted and systematic to get the best results. 7. Look for volunteering opportunities. This is another top ExpertBeacon.com tip, helping you to get experience and make connections in your chosen field. For advice and help finding your ideal new career in 2016, or for specialist recruitment services for your business, get in touch with the expert team at SOLOS Recruitment Consultants.

Sliding Door Wardrobes Celebrates 20 Years In Business! On the 20th anniversary of Sliding Door Wardobes Ltd trading, they celebrate their busiest year so far. The success of this business lies in the fact that at its core has always been customer satisfaction and value for money. Alexander The Great by Gloria Morgan Alexander The Great was born in 356 BC. His father, King Philip, was assassinated in 336 BC, and Alexander succeeded him to the throne of Macedon at the age of only twenty. He became known as “The Great” because of his prowess as a soldier. In ten years his military campaigns created one of the largest empires of the ancient world. Even today, it sounds impressive, stretching from Greece to Egypt and into northwest India. Alexander was not a modest man. He is said to have been rash and impulsive with a violent temper. But history describes a calmer side to him too, as an avid reader with a great desire for knowledge, and a love for philosophy. On the other hand, he was known to lack selfcontrol with alcohol, and that could have been his downfall. In 323 BC, Alexander died unexpectedly in Babylon at the age of only 33. And this is where the fun starts. He had a lot of enemies and immediately rumours spread that he was murdered. He had attended a wedding banquet and there, apparently, he was served a glass of poisoned wine. Poison usually kills quickly, but poor Alexander lived for another ten days, growing progressively weaker and in ever greater pain. So was it poison – or something else? An essence of the plant called white hellebore (Veratrum album) would have produced a slow, lingering death. This particular plant was known back in those days, and it is possible Alexander’s wine was spiked with that. If it wasn’t poison, you can take your pick. He could have drunk river water containing deadly bacteria; or he might have contracted malaria, typhoid, meningitis, pancreatitis, or West Nile virus. Diagnosis of fatal diseases was not an exact science then. Either way, legend has it that on his death bed,

Alexander summoned his generals and told them his three last wishes: 1. The best doctors should carry his coffin, to demonstrate that in the face of death, even the best doctors in the world have no power to heal. 2. The treasure of money, gold and precious stones he had accumulated should be scattered along the procession to the cemetery so that everybody would see that material wealth acquired on earth, will stay on earth. 3. His hands should be let loose, so they would hang outside the coffin for all to see, so that people understood that we come into this world empty-handed and we leave this world emptyhanded, after the most precious treasure of all is exhausted, and that is TIME. Alexander explained: “We do not take to our grave any material wealth. TIME is our most precious treasure because it is LIMITED. We can produce more wealth, but we cannot produce more time. When we give someone our time, we actually give a portion of our life that we will never take back. Our time is our life. Nottingham has been announced as England’s official Home of Sport, following a national campaign by tourism board VisitEngland, in a bid to find England’s top sporting destination. Having received more nominations than any other English destination, Nottingham was the ‘People’s Choice’ going into the public vote, and then went on to be a clear winner with 38% of the overall vote. James Berresford, VisitEngland’s Chief Executive, says: “Live sporting events are great drivers for tourism, worth £3.2 billion to the sector. With this accolade, Nottingham has been put firmly on the tourist trail as a must-visit destination for any sports fan. As the site of our glorious Ashes win this summer, the setting for the critically acclaimed I Believe in Miracles film and the home to the National Water Sports Centre, Nottingham offers visitors plenty to see and do.” Simon Starr, Director of Sport Nottinghamshire, said: “I am absolutely delighted that Nottingham has been recognised as England’s Home of Sport. We are blessed with fantastic and iconic facilities, great teams, great coaches and some amazing athletes but more than that, Nottingham is a city that lives and breathes its sport. The title is well deserved and I hope it will help to inspire even more people in Nottingham to lead healthy and active lives” Councillor Dave Trimble, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Nottingham City Council, said: “Nottingham is a very worthy winner of this accolade, being voted England’s Home of Sport 2015. Our city offers world-class sporting facilities and events for both local people and for visitors to the area. I’m particularly pleased that we were the ‘people’s choice’ as it shows how proud the people of Nottingham are of their city’s sporting achievements.”

How Is Your Town Centre Performing? Broxtowe residents, shoppers and business owners are being encouraged to get online and have their say on why they visit the Borough’s four towns to help inform new initiatives and improvements in the area. The questionnaire is available online on the Broxtowe Borough Council website and is quick and easy to fill in, asking a range of questions including how often they visit the towns, why they visit, how long they stay for and what facilities they use when visiting. Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council and Cabinet Member for Environment and Economic Development, Councillor Richard Jackson said: “Our town centres are visited by thousands of people each day and their views on how our local area can be improved are incredibly important to us. Town Centres are constantly evolving and adapting to spending habits, working hours and social activities and the results of the consultation will help shape future projects in Beeston, Eastwood, Kimberley and Stapleford to make Broxtowe a great place to live, work and spend leisure time.” The Town Centre Management team are keen to hear from as many residents, tradesmen, retailers, business owners and shoppers from each of the Borough’s four town centres. The questionnaire will run on the Council’s website until Sunday 6th March

Priory Celtic Take On Walking Football A Kimberley football team are feeling the benefits of a new footballing challenge after joining forces with Priory Celtic to bring walking football to people of all ages and abilities. The weekly Walking Football sessions, organised by Broxtowe Borough Council’s Sport Development team, Broxtowe Sport have been running for over 3 years and have become so popular that a second session has been set up in partnership with Priory Celtic to extend the club’s current offerings of juniors, seniors and a Veterans team. Sessions will now include: • Mondays, 11.00am until 12.00pm Kimberley Leisure Centre – supported Broxtowe Sport • Thursdays, 12.00pm until 1.00pm Kimberley Leisure Centre – supported Priory Celtic.

at by at by

Neil Gee, 69, from Dale Abbey currently takes part in the sessions. He said: “I bumped into a friend and he told me about Walking Football, I used to play years ago but had to stop due to knee problems. Walking Football is great because it’s less pressure on my joints. I enjoy the social aspect and look forward to it every week come rain or shine!” Sessions are £2 no need to book just turn up to either session. Walking Football is a specially modified version of the beautiful game which uses the same rules as five-a-side football, except participants are not allowed to run, only walk. The sessions are a great way for older people to keep fit, whether they are still active or returning to exercise, whilst socialising with other local people.

Fashion Show Raises Over £375 For Chartity It was strike a pose back in November as a Charity Fashion Show and Sale in aid of Forces In The Community and Nottingham Children’s Hospital raised over £375 in Eastwood. Five volunteer models took to the catwalk at the glamorous fashion show, courtesy of SOS Fashion and hosted by Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Susan Bagshaw to give guests a sneak peak of just some of the items they could purchase later in the evening. Councillor Bagshaw said: “This is a fantastic total raised for the charities and I want to thank everyone who came to support the event, as well as SOS Fashion and Eastwood Community Football Club for their help. It was a brilliant evening, I know my volunteer models had a great time strutting down the catwalk and all for two worthy causes.” Forces in the Community is a local charity committed to supporting ex-service personnel and their families to reach their full potential. The charity delivers tailored employment guidance, housing advice, mental health support and provides a supportive environment in which to develop. Nottingham Children's Hospital raises money to support the extraordinary patients and families including fund raising for Nottingham Children's Hospital. By transforming facilities, providing services and funding new equipment, they help to make it better for their young patients and their families.

Be Kind To Yourself The first couple of months of the new year can be cold, dark and miserable. Party season is over. You’ve drunk far too much, eaten your own body weight in chocolate oranges, not moved off the settee for a fortnight (reaching for the remote doesn’t count!) and spent the GNP of a small country on presents. Does it really make sense to suddenly pledge to lose 3 stone in three weeks, join a gym and go every night and not spend another penny until next December? I don’t think so!! A few years ago I decided to give up making resolutions on new years eve. The pattern was the same every year. Setting myself up to fail, then beating myself up when, surprise, surprise, I achieved nothing. As a general rule January and February can be pretty bleak. Depriving yourself of things that make you happy doesn’t help. Forget resolutions and instead focus on being nice to yourself. I recently came across an old Facebook page called “Be Kind To Yourself Challenge”. All you had to do was come up with one complementary thing about yourself every day for a month. What a lovely idea. It beats starving yourself anyway. If you must set yourself some goals for 2016 then at least make them realistic. Be honest with yourself.

Setting rules like no chocolate/alcohol/ spending money for four weeks rarely works. Instead why not try avoiding chocolate from Monday to Thursday? Knowing there is a light at the end of the tunnel makes a massive psychological difference. Same goes for exercise. Think about what you enjoy. I tried a Zumba class once. Never again. I was awful. But plenty of people love it. And if you love something you are much more likely to stick with it. If you hate the idea of a gym then maybe long walks would work. Small changes can make a big difference. There are loads of great apps to help you achieve goals. Here at ng magazines we have all done the C25K. None of us could run at all let alone 5k. We all used the app , gradually building up at our own pace and it works! We can all now run 5k without stopping. So let’s enjoy these first few months of 2016. Let’s celebrate what we have! Let’s take small, realistic steps towards our goals. If we feel like a bar of chocolate then lets have one! Eat well, sleep lots, drink plenty of water, move more, be mindful of your surroundings, say one nice thing about yourself everyday and things suddenly don’t seem too bad. © Ali Wale

This recipe was given by French This is Sarah Beeny’s recipe that beat Gordon Ramsay’s on the F Word. Living restaurant, Nottingham

1.2kg cubed lamb (shoulder or leg) olive oil 1 head garlic - chopped 1 tin chopped tomatoes 1tsp caster sugar 2 tbsp tomato puree 2 onions - chopped 20g plain flour thyme - few sprigs 1 tsp marjoram 2 or 3 bay leaves 2 tbsp chopped parsley 35cl red wine optional - 50g extra fine capers or 100g olives or both! 500g farfalle 50g grated parmesan Method Use a cast iron pot with lid. Brown lamb in olive oil. Remove meat, discard fat. Add more oil, fry onion & garlic gently. Do not allow to brown. Add meat along with all other ingredients, season with salt & pepper. Top up with water to bring liquid level with meat. Bring to simmering, cook 45 mins to 1 hour depending on age of lamb. Serve with pasta and cheese. Serves 6.

4oz melted butter 10oz caster sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla essence 4oz plain flour 5 tbsp cocoa Method Sieve flour & salt into a bowl. Add sugar. Mix eggs together then pour into the mixture. Add melted butter & vanilla essence. Stir. Pour into a well greased 8” spring form cake tin. Place in pre-heated oven (170°C) for about 30 mins. Check after 25 mins.

Curried Carrot Soup Michael Caines, a Michelin star chef, kindly contributed this recipe. 500g carrots - peeled & chopped small 150g onions - chopped 150g unsalted butter 2 cloves garlic - peeled & crushed 1 tsp cumin seeds 2g madras curry powder 300ml chicken stock 500ml water 1 bouquet garnie fresh coriander leaves Method Sweat onion, garlic & carrots in a saucepan with a pinch of salt for 5 mins. Careful not to brown. Meanwhile toast cumin seeds in a dry pan. Then add madras powder & toasted cumin seeds to the vegetables & sweat for 2 mins. Add the stock, water and bouquet garnie. Bring to boil & add a little salt. Reduce to simmer for 30 mins. Then blend to a fine purée, pass through a sieve, return to a clean pan, season and garnish with coriander leaves. The Embankment is a newly refurbished venue, situated on Trent Bridge. It was clear from the moment we walked in that the team at The Embankment are proud of the heritage of their building. Formerly the Boots “No.2” store in the company’s home city it also became the firm’s social club. The pub has been tastefully refurbished and adorned with Boots memorabilia, pharmaceutical antiques and striking wall art, some of which includes photographs of the local area from bygone years. The £600,000 investment is said to have ‘transformed the worst bits of the old interior and made a virtue of the best’. Original features - like the parquet floor, oak panelling, and stained glass - have been brought back to life, and complimented with contemporary features. With two bars, a restaurant, a conservatory, function rooms plus a planned gig venue downstairs, it lends itself well to community use. The adults only ‘Dispensary’ bar is particularly attractive and atmospheric, walking comfortably down the line between contemporary and tradition, and showcasing an excellent selection of real ale and craft beer. Their aim is to produce traditional food but with a Mediterranean twist and some British-style tapas – things like mini fishand-chips or cottage pie. We ate from the Sunday lunch menu. Starters were £2.95 to £3.95. We chose Serrano ham bruschetta topped with honey dressed watercress & pomegranate. A delight!

For mains our choices were steak, stilton & stout pie £9.95, chicken tikka masala £8.50 (both these were filling and delicious) or bangers & mash with onion gravy for £7.95 (chosen and enjoyed by our children). Our family were looked after well by Ryan. The meal was good quality and affordable and the place relaxing and casual. A good, honest venue serving great value food. In terms of The Embankment as a venue for your events like business seminars, conferences and meetings, team activities, training days, weddings, family celebrations and themed events they are happy to help you to plan your event and ensure you don’t pay more than you need to. The Embankment is a unique venue for all occasions. Relaxing and informal, within a great building with a fascinating history. Give it a try!

More fosterers needed! A local animal charity which gives a ‘lifeline’ to abandoned domestic animals and wildlife, is in urgent need itself - of fosterers. With frequently no room to admit any more, an influx of abandoned animals at this cold time of year is a worry. Animal Accident Rescue Unit runs a foster system as it has no premises. Fostering benefits domestic pets by giving a ‘real’ home environment, even if temporary – particularly appreciated during winter months. Being possibly the charity’s most rewarding voluntary role, fosterers see the transformation from abandoned, nervous animals to happy, confident pets ready for adoption. As one fosterer explains: ‘Even if you can only offer a short-term home for an animal, we want to hear from you … all you need is space at home, be reliable and experience in looking after a cat or dog. For safety reasons, we expect foster cats to stay indoors.’ Dog fosterers must be patient and compassionate – but advice is offered, and all fosterers and eventual adopters are homechecked. To discover more on helping transform the life of even one needy cat or dog, contact Victoria, Recruitment Officer on 07919576479. Except for other volunteering opportunities at the charity, this telephone number must not be used for any other purpose – or email admin@aaru.org.uk with your contact details. To see who would love a new start, all the waiting animals are online at www. animalaccident.org.uk, whilst the charity’s lifeline number is 0115-9321555 (please leave your details for a volunteer to return your call).

Preschool Children Add Finishing Touches To Watnall Green Ten preschool children helped officially open improvements to Watnall Green at the beginning of November, as they joined Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Susan Bagshaw to plant flower bulbs on the site. The children, from Watnall Preschool took part in the bulb planting to add the finishing touches to £24,000 of improvements to the area, thanks to funding from WREN and Broxtowe Borough Council. The improvements, which saw wildflower areas, seating, access points and paths improved, a cornfield annual meadow created and a bird feeding crop established, were made after consultation with local residents last summer to help identify the improvements they wanted to see at the site. Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council and Portfolio Holder for Environment and Economic Development, Councillor Richard Jackson said: “I’d like to say a big thank you to the children from Watnall Preschool who braved the November weather to be part of this special occasion.” Cheryl Raynor, WREN’s Grant Manager for Nottinghamshire, says: “We are delighted to be supporting the Borough Council and pleased that our funding has benefitted the local community in Watnall. WREN is always happy to consider grant applications for projects that make a difference to local communities and we’re really pleased with the way this project has progressed. Seeing the children enjoying themselves today on site planning bulbs is the icing on the cake.”

Eastwood School Children Discover Reality Of Prison Life Teenagers from Hall Park Academy, Eastwood were given a unique insight into life behind bars recently as they took part in a ‘Prison Me – No Way’ session to learn more about the causes, consequences and penalties of crime and the effects of antisocial behaviour. All Year 8 pupils at the school attended the sessions, where they met serving prisoners to hear their stories about how crime had impacted on their lives and those around them. The sessions, run by Prison Officers, are just one of a number of education initiatives taking place in the North of Broxtowe Borough to raise awareness about and reduce anti-social behaviour and crime in the local community. Just some of the comments from the students about whether they will change their behaviour following the session include: • “Yes, because I don’t want to go to prison and I want to get good grades.” • “Walk away from friends if they decide to do something bad.” • “Yes, because I think prison is a very lonely place and I don’t want a criminal record.” The No Way Trust is a national educational charity set up in 1995 by prison officers who wanted to make an impact on the lives of young people and turn them away from crime and its consequences using highly innovative educational techniques. It provides a quality service to help young people make a success of their lives, using a fresh approach that encourages a positive decision making process, designed to reduce or remove the possibility of offending behaviour.

REMEDI RESTORATIVE JUSTICE SERVICES NOTTINGHAMSHIRE TEAM Remedi is a charitable organisation funded by the police and crime commissioner to deliver restorative justice services within Nottinghamshire. Restorative justice is a voluntary process that aims to restore the wellbeing of victims, offenders and communities damaged by crime, by bringing together all those affected in a safe way to address the harm that has been caused. We will prepare all parties individually until they are ready to communicate; either directly (face to face) or indirectly (letters/shuttle messages). Restorative Justice is available at various stages of the criminal justice process including; after arrest, after conviction or even once the offender has been released.

For more information or to access this service, please contact 0115 859 9209 or email info@ageuknotts.org.uk.

The process aims to meet the needs of the parties involved so there are numerous benefits for both victims and offenders. Restorative justice can give victims a voice allowing them to ask questions, receive an explanation and achieve some form of closure through better understanding. It also gives offenders the opportunity to express remorse, make amends and acknowledge the change needed to prevent further offending. Restorative justice can also have an impact on the wider community as it has been proven to reduce offending rates which in turn reduces the number of victims.

Registered Charity No: 1067881

The Recovery from Separation & Divorce course gives help and support, as well as practical tools, to get through your relationship breakdown and divorce. It is a safe, non-judgmental environment to meet others who are in the same situation, which allows discussions and questions whilst grappling with important issues. The course has been developed by divorcees with different specialties: a judge, solicitors, communications experts, counsellors, family life experts, and mediation advisers. It has been helping thousands of people recover from relationship breakdown. All the people that run and help with the course have been through divorce and separation themselves and have a passion to help others recover completely from the impact that relationship breakdown brings. Although the RSD course is run in a church building in the city centre, it is specifically designed for people who may not go to church or who do not want to discuss faith issues. The setting is welcoming, relaxed and unthreatening. What others have said after being on this course:“I now feel less like a failure, less like a social pariah and less as if I have let myself and others down”. “I wish I’d come on this course before now”. “I’m excited about finding myself, investing in and nurturing the relationships that matter to me”. The courses run over an eight week period. They ask for a small donation of £30 towards refreshments and materials, however bursaries are available for people under financial pressure. If you would like more information please contact Judy Collinge on 0115 779 1315 or email: judy.collinge@ gracechurchnottingham.org or visit the website: www.gracechurchnottingham.org/ rsd

We also recommend you wear a rear light on your back pack or your helmet for extra visibility. The additional height of the light will be at eye level for most motorists You should also ensure the batteries in your lights are always in full working order and not running low. Staying visible on the roads during the winter months is important; it doesn’t cost the earth and can help you have many hours of safe cycling.

Hi-viz clothing is also an ideal way of staying visible during dusk and dark nights. Reflective clothing is a highly effective way of being Special Constabulary Recruitment - Are you interested in becoming a Special Constable?
