Dream Team

Dream Doors is a family business, run by Jon and Hilary Brown. They have had an amazing first year, winning New Stars for 2018 for the most outstanding franchise! Dream Door’s showroom in Beeston has now been open for a year and Jon and Hilary would like to thank all their valued customers and extend an invitation to new customers to pop in for a chat and a coffee to discuss ideas for your new kitchen or bedroom (or both!).

an honest helpful service. Whether you’re looking to freshen up your kitchen by just changing the doors, or you want to redesign the whole kitchen or bedroom, we’re on hand to help. Working with our clients every step of the way, we help take your ideas, and turn them into a reality.

Before

After

Dream Doors are now proud to include a brand new collection of fully fitted and sliding wardrobes and bedroom furniture along with their high quality kitchen and bedroom refits.

Every installation is project managed, whether that is a worktop swap or a totally new kitchen. The important difference is you will only deal with the owners who care and treat every project with the same attention to detail. Not only do we change the doors, we can supply and install new units, work surfaces from laminate to glass and supply a vast range of solid surfaces along with sinks and appliances. We are proud to be main suppliers for NEFF and Samsung kitchen appliances. The advantages of sliding doors systems are well known - maximising storage, with unrestricted access while taking up no extra floor space. These doors come in a wider range of materials and finishes than you could imagine, allowing you to put them together in any combination you like, and creating a beautifully practical look that is uniquely yours. With spring around the corner, there has never been a better time to give a new lease of life to your kitchen or bedroom. How does it work? The team at Dream Doors Nottingham are on hand to help make the process as simple as possible. Forget hard sales tactics, the experienced team will offer

We provide a friendly and professional service using qualified tradesmen who will never compromise on quality or craftmanship and you can be safe in the knowledge that we will comply with all regulations as required. Our fitters will treat your home with respect and we will do all we can to minimise any disruption. Everything we do is made-to-measure, so if your kitchen or bedroom is a little out of the ordinary, we can accommodate literally every size and dimension. The beauty of choosing Dream Doors, the UK’s leading kitchen make over company, is the peace of mind that you are working with a company that has been transforming kitchens for over 19 years. Read the reviews and scores on the independent review website www.checkatrade.co.uk We are proud to have a score of 9.82/10.

The Telly

Tale

By the time you read this, “I’m a Pleb”, as we like to call it, will be a distant memory. We will already be racking our brains as to who was crowned the King or Queen of the jungle and the “celebrities” will all be signing up for the next reality show. However, in my house it is compulsory viewing and actually the only programme that gets kids, dogs and adults all together on the sofa. So it does have its uses. After the jungle antics finished we were straight into Christmas fortnight. It’s the only time of the year I buy the Radio Times and turn into my Grandma by circling all the programmes I want to watch with a black marker. I then forget to watch any of them.

Did you know... • the inventor of television would not let his own children watch TV • the average person in the UK watches over 4 hours telly a day • Top Gear is the most watched show with 350 million viewers in over 170 countries • the first couple to be shown in bed together on telly were Fred and Wilma Flinstone Telly these days is shockingly bad. How is it possible to have access to hundreds of channels and nothing to watch? Do I really

want to see scallywags being chased by police cars three times a day? Or scallywags fiddling the welfare state? Or scallywags wasting the time of our emergency services? No I do not! And just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse, Dr Pimple Popper appeared on our telly. Dr...Pimple...Popper... Any ideas? Yep, it’s a programme about squeezing spots. Holy Moly how low can you go?? And it’s not just the programmes. The adverts are even worse. Sitting down, about to tuck into my “chuck it all in a pan and hope for the best” dinner, I do not want to be thinking about the benefits of Tena Lady pull on pants. Surely there is a time and place for these adverts and 8pm on a school night is not one of them! I could go on – but this is a family magazine... It’s the youth I feel sorry for. The innocence of dating programmes like Blind Date have been replaced by Love Island where wearing anything more than a bikini is a no, no. Even worse is Naked Attraction. A show where the only thing used to select a prospective partner is a view of their bottom half. And this is on at 10pm. I nearly choked on my chocolate Hob Nob when flicking through the channels with my kids on a family weekend away. And this is series 4!!! Stop the world, I want to get off... Thank goodness for NetFlix. Oh and Peaky Blinders. And Masterchef. And The Apprentice. And not forgetting The Island. Well, if you can’t beat ‘em..... © Ali Wale

Local Author & Goalkeeper Release New Book Local author Jonathan Nicholas has worked with goalkeeper Steve Cherry to produce Steve’s exciting new autobiography, ‘Cherry Picking – Life between the Sticks’. Jonathan says: ‘We worked very closely together throughout 2018 to produce an honest and often hilarious account of Steve’s thirty year footballing career and it will be released on 28th February. We both had a great time writing it and really hope it will be an interesting read, not just for football fans but readers of more general autobiography.’ Steve Cherry was born in Calverton and was spotted by a Derby County scout at the age of fifteen. He played at Derby County for nine years and was capped for England Youth under Brian Clough several times until moving to Walsall FC, Plymouth Argyle and then Chesterfield before the boyhood club of his dreams Notts County. Steve was at Notts County from 1989 – 1995 in the glory days under Neil Warnock, winning two consecutive Wembley finals and promotion to the First Division. How was this done? What happened behind the scenes at Notts? ‘Cherry Picking’ is available now for pre-order on Amazon, and on general release on 28th February.

Restaurant & Bar Lounge Fine Indian Cuisine

“No No Ordinary Tree -No No Ordinary Restaurant” Restaurant

T

B T, readily found in India is no ordinary tree as it has the ability to continually spread by putting down new roots that in turn form new trunks. Over time one single tree can grow to the size and strength of a small forest! Amongst people in India the Banyan is revered for its mystical properties and provides a focal point for village folk to meet, take shade and watch the day go by. We take our inspiration from the organic yet mystical properties of this special tree and endeavour to grow our business in the same way. Since opening our doors in January 2007, The Banyan Tree has certainly taken root, and eleven years on it continues to grow and consistently serves fine quality Indian cuisine. Those of you who have tried us will know that we are up there with the very best in Nottinghamshire. Our slogan is "no ordinary tree - no ordinary restaurant", and our food and service rarely fails to strike a cord with our patrons. Naturally, we use only the freshest of ingredients, and all our spices, massala, and sauces are skilfully

prepared from primary ingredients which naturally yield flavours that are distinct in taste and quality. Our menu boasts a great balance of popular offerings and a notable selection of signature dishes which have been so well received that we have seldom changed our menu. However, we hope you are as excited as us to learn that we have launched a new menu this January 2019. Our new menu has focused around the introduction of more healthier grills and a select few starters and curries. But do rest

assured that our high service standards, restaurant design and ambience shall always remain a constant. Please visit our website www.thebanyan.co.uk to peruse our new menu.

LET’S GET BAKING N

ot many of us can find the time to bake these days, despite the popularity of programmes such as the Great British Bake Off, but there is no doubt that a home-baked cake can knock the socks off anything you can buy ready-made in the supermarket. If you do decide to bake your own cakes, not only will you fill the house with a gorgeous aroma that makes the whole family feel like they’ve stepped back in time, you will also be following in the footsteps of our ancestors. The first evidence of baking dates back to the ancient world. The oldest oven

ever discovered was in Croatia in 2014 dating back some 6500 years. The ancient Egyptians and Greeks baked bread and baking flourished under the Romans with their love of festivals and feasts. The first Bakers’ Guild was established in Rome in 168 BC. The recipes I have chosen are simple and quick so you won’t spend all day in the kitchen, they also celebrate the use of fruit in baking, so whilst I can’t claim they are healthy or detoxifying, they do at least contribute to your 5 a day!

Passionfruit Sandwich Cake

Seasonal Pear Cake

Best Ever Banana Bread

A really easy cake this one, sweet but with the tang of passionfruit, perfect with a cuppa. Ingredients 200g butter, soft 200g golden caster sugar 4 eggs (beaten) 200g self-raising flour (sifted) A dash of milk Passionfruit filling 4 large passionfruit 100g butter, very soft 200g icing sugar

This is best made with soft, buttery pears and served warm with a dollop of cream or crème fraiche. Ingredients 50g butter (melted) 500g ripe pears, peeled, cored and chopped Juice of 1 lemon 75g caster sugar 2 eggs (beaten) 2 tbsp apricot jam for glaze 75g plain flour 1 heaped tsp baking powder

A really easy quick bake, that can be frozen. Ingredients 140g softened butter 140g caster sugar 140g self-raising flour 1tsp baking powder 2 large eggs (beaten) 3 ripe bananas (retain half of one for slicing on the top of the cake)

Heat oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas4. Line and butter 2 x 20cm sponge tins. Beat butter and sugar until light and soft then beat in eggs, flour and milk to make a smooth batter. Divide between tins and smooth off. Bake for 20/25 mins until risen and golden. Leave to cool.

Heat oven to 180°C/160°fan/gas4. Line and grease a 20cm, loosebottomed cake tin. Put pears into a bowl with lemon juice to prevent them going brown. Sieve the flour and baking powder into a bowl, add a pinch of salt and the caster sugar. Beat in the eggs and melted butter then fold in the pears. Pour the mixture into the tin and bake for about 50 mins. Cool on a wire rack.

Halve the passionfruit and scoop out the seeds, push through a sieve to obtain the juice. Beat the butter until light and combine with half the icing sugar, add 2 tbsp of the passionfruit juice and the rest of the icing sugar. Brush the two inside faces of the sponges with the left-over juice and then spread the filling on one half, add the top and dust with icing sugar.

To make the glaze, melt the apricot jam with 1 tbsp water and brush on the surface of the cake.

Heat oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas4. Butter and line a 2lb loaf tin. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy then add in the beaten eggs and a little flour. Fold in the remaining flour, the baking powder and 2 ½ mashed bananas. Pour into the tin and decorate with sliced banana, bake for about 30 mins until a skewer comes out clean. Rest in the tin for 10 mins and then cool on a wire rack.

Inspire has received a National Lottery grant of £10k for an exciting heritage project, Home Cooked Heritage, in Nottinghamshire. The project focuses on uncovering and sharing the food heritage of Nottinghamshire; family recipes, food producers, social history and what food means to us all now. Supported through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), the project will enable local young people from two schools to visit Nottinghamshire Archives and work with the materials, to both learn about, and be inspired by, food stories. They will work with heritage expert James Wright, performerstoryteller Nicky Rafferty and visual artist Clare Taylor, to produce creative and literacy responses to the heritage materials.

Five adult groups in public workshops, held across five Inspire venues will also work with the artists and create a response. Works produced by the participants will be curated into a touring exhibition that will be shown in Inspire Library Galleries across the county and made into a book that will go back into the Nottinghamshire Archives to be discovered by food historians of the future. Helen Ackroyd, Principal Arts Officer at Inspire said, “We are thrilled to have received this support thanks to National Lottery players and can’t wait to see what is unearthed in Nottinghamshire Archives to inspire our artists of all ages.”

Walks With Emily & Friends Strelley Village lies just a few miles from the hustle and bustle of Nottingham city centre. Not to be confused with Strelley, which lies just across the main road, Strelley Village is a quaint area with lovely footpaths and home to Strelley Hall.

walk down this path you will eventually reach the M1 motorway, and go through a tunnel underneath. At this point, follow the path round to the left and keep to this path until you reach a main road. At this point there is a short walk up the road, so dogs will need to be kept on a short lead. Follow this road up (Dead Lane) being careful to watch for oncoming traffic as this small section doesn’t have a path. At the top of the hill, turn right down Robinettes Lane (past the farm shop). Keep walking down this lane for a short while until you see a footpath sign and a metal gate on the right (signposted to Strelley).

Walk distance: 4 miles Difficulty: Easy- all on the flat Pub stop: The Broad Oak - Strelley Village (just down from start and end point) Starting point: Lay by off Main Street, Strelley Village For this route, park up at the lay by just off Main Road. This is free - if it is full, try the Broad Oak pub (although you will have to pay to park here). From where you have parked, turn left up the bridleway. Continue down this path as it bends round until you reach a fork. Instead of continuing up, follow the path round to the right continuing across fields with a wooded area on your right. Keep following the path down until you reach a cross roads - there should be a green sign telling you where all the footpaths go, turn right following the footpath towards Cossall. As you

Take this turning and walk across the fields following the footpath signs and going through several gates. Eventually you will come to another road (more like a farm track). Continue up until you reach a T-junction, and here turn right. Walk along the road passing over the M1 motorway, until you can see Strelley Hall in the distance. When you have crossed over the footbridge, you will be back in Strelley Village. Turn right and walk back down the road to your car. The Rock ’n’ Soul Singers

The Christmas season was a busy one for the Rock’n’Soul Singers. Our charity collections at various events, plus funds raised at our sell-out Christmas Concert, made a good beginning to our year singing in aid of the YOUNG MiNDS charity. Thank you to all who generously supported us in raising over £600 so far! On Saturday March 23rd 2019 we will be singing at a Craft Fayre being held at Our Lady of Good Counsel church, 280 Nottingham Road, Eastwood, NG16 2AQ. Doors open at 10am until 3pm and you will find a range of artisan and homemade craft goods, cakes and entertainment – so we hope we will see you there! Visit our website or look at our facebook page to see where we will be performing in the future – and if possible, come along!

COME & SING: MOZART "REQUIEM" Good Friday: 19 April 2019 at Bottesford Parish Church

The Christmas period saw ECMVC perform for the fourth year at the Rainbows Christmas Celebration Concert in Repton, Derbyshire; the Rainbows concert is always a magical event and ECMVC and Sonara helped them to raise over £1,800 for the charity. When the two choirs joined to provide seasonal jollity in Derby’s Intu Centre, the bucket collection for Guide Dogs (Amber Valley) raised nearly £800. Two events – £2,600 raised for local charities! And so we look forward to a busy 2019, which will see the choir record a new CD, perform a number of local concerts including another appearance for Little Eaton WI, a joint concert with New Greasley Singers at St Mary’s and the first concert of the year at Nuthall Methodist Church on Saturday 23 February. Preparation for the choir’s forthcoming centenary has now begun in earnest, as the main centenary concert will take place at Nottingham’s Albert Hall on Saturday 28 September. This is followed a week later by an exclusive concert in the Painted Hall at Chatsworth House. The Poppy & Pint, Pierrepont Rd, West Bridgford, Nottingham NG2 5DX

Oh, To Be Free Of The Ironing! by Gloria Morgan We all do ironing, don’t we? For some people, there is a real sense of satisfaction in reducing that over-balancing pile of crumpled garments into an array of pristine shirts, jeans, blouses, frocks, tees, underwear, even socks, as smart and wrinkle-free as the day they were bought. To refresh these clothes somehow refreshes the spirit, too. Even well-worn old favourites look like new again, and all is right with the world. The pleasure in this renewal is such a deeply ingrained feeling that some families are willing to spend as much as £300 to buy the ultimate in domestic steam ironing technology. Now, hands up if you’ve ever seen one of these. Perhaps your greatgranny had one, now in use as a door stop. Be careful not to drop it on your foot or you could end up in A & E because it is extremely heavy. It’s made of solid iron. And it’s called an iron. It dates from the late 1800’s or early 1900’s. Not much like that sleek, shiny, plastic-clad, steam-exuding appliance, is it? But they do the same job. Irons were not originally made for domestic use. They were found only in the hands of professionals. They were used to produce a high quality finish to tailor-made garments. Before about 1800 all fabric was woven by hand. And all items of clothing were hand-made – for rich and poor alike. Aside from seamstresses and tailors, who made garments for a living, every housewife was expected to be able to sew. Stitching was as common an activity among teenage girls then as texting is now. It was just what you did, and never gave it a thought. It took many hours of work to hand-sew a dress or a shirt or a pair of trousers. Depending upon the material they were made from, it is likely they were very rarely washed. And they were never ironed.

Our much loved costume dramas on TV don’t depict our heroes and heroines as creased and wrinkled as they would surely have been in real life. Even after Mr Darcy’s dip, when his shirt was dried it would not have been ironed. Ironing hadn’t been invented in 1813. So why do producers want to show us the unreality of historic characters wearing clothes nicely smoothed with an iron which they could not possibly have possessed? Is there some unspoken modern judgement about people whose clothes are not ironed? I had a friend in London in a high-powered job that came with an obligation to 3-inch heels, shoulder pads and lip gloss. She gave it all up, bought some clay and a wheel and re-invented herself as a potter. She never ironed a piece of clothing ever again. And she felt freer than she had ever done. Did “feeling free” come down to how rumpled she was prepared to be? Would you risk going all the way, and saying goodbye to your iron forever?

A New Year, A New You Every new year, masses of the British population plunge into a frenzy of dieting in an attempt to counterbalance weight gained during the holidays. Various foods are banned and a new exercise regime is created, only for the whole thing to be abandoned a couple of weeks later. As a BANT registered nutritionist, I find these “diets” especially amusing, for two very good reasons: diets rarely work and cutting out entire food groups is not a sustainable practice. Luckily there are some simple dietary tweaks that deliver big results if losing weight and getting healthy is your goal. Start with protein The jury is out on whether breakfast is indeed the most important meal of the day or if it’s just a marketing ploy invented by Kelloggs. What we do know is that if you eat breakfast, making it a protein based one has its advantages. Studies show that eating a high-protein breakfast is both protective against weight-gain and regulates appetite for the rest of the day. The net result is fewer hunger pangs or food cravings throughout the day. Eat more veg We only have to glance at the current list of superfoods to notice that fruits and vegetables are the very things that are exceptionally good for us. Gram for gram, plants contain a greater quantity and combination of vitamins and minerals than anything else that is likely to pass our lips. Research by Imperial College London suggests eating 10 portions of vegetables and fruits for optimum wellness. Whilst that may seem a little excessive, it doesn’t mean that you’ll need to chow down on mountains of vegetables. A handful of spinach, a couple of florets of broccoli and a few spears of asparagus added to a lunch will count as 3 of those portions. Repeat that twice more in a day and you are onto a winner. Hydrate Water is an essential component of every cell of the body, in fact the average person is approximately 65% water. Since we are more water than human, it pays off to stay hydrated. The good news is, by consuming 8 glasses of water a day, you are more likely to sustain a healthy weight, experience fewer food cravings and reduce your chances of chronic disease. Spend time outdoors As health benefits go, spending time outdoors comes with a whole host of them, yet it’s one of the most overlooked. Research shows spending time in nature has a significant de-stressing, gut boosting and immune strengthening effect.Try a 30-minute lunch time or post-work walk per day. It’s free and a decent form of exercise.

Let’s get the biggest misconception out of the way: the end result of nutritional therapy is not a diet plan. Sure, you will get some recommendations of what to eat but not in a prescriptive manner. Behind every nutritionist is a real person that, occasionally, eats cake, chocolate and all of that tasty stuff you will likely crave. We know what a perfect diet looks like but also understand this may not be realistic for everyone.

For this reason, there are no perfect diet plans, only steady progress that will get you closer to your health goals.

My only ask was 100% commitment and anything is possible.

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO START: GAIL’S JOURNEY How often or how many times have you heard the phrase “I’m too old”, or maybe “you need to slow down a little”? I’d like you to meet Gail (pictured). Gail has worked in the public sector for, let’s say, a while. Gail reached out to me as she had heard I’m not afraid of a challenge, so we connected and had a very in-depth conversation about her request. Want to know what Gail asked? “Andy, I am retiring in a few weeks and I want to set myself a personal goal. Not to be all showy and make it all about me, but to set a standard bar high and commit myself to this goal.” “My goal is to step onto a stage within a physique/ bodybuilding competition. Not to be placed first but to say I did this, and I got here.” You can imagine my eyes! I LIVE for moments like these. If you’ve followed me for a while on social media, you’ll know I like to challenge things that people say can’t be done. Gail had been told this, and I wasn’t going to sit there and let her believe it. In the past Gail has been active, and has been into some sort of general fitness routine. She has also been dieting for much of her life. Her first question was, “Is my goal possible?”

Email: info@strengthyphysique.co.uk Website: www.strengthphysique.co.uk

Gail has struggled with her relationship with food for most of her life. Always on a low-calorie diet of 1000 – 1200 calories per day accompanied by lots of exercise to try keep weight gain away. When I explained we would need to increase weight while we programme for muscle gain, I wasn’t sure how this would impact mentally with Gail. Safe to say, we currently have Gail on 2500 calories a day, training six days per week with full nutrition guidance and what a result this is producing! The challenge of overcoming a poor relationship with food is long gone. Gail is consuming twice the number of GOOD calories in a day than she previously did and weight has only been increasing 0.5kg over a few months at a time with a total of nearly 4kg gained. Safe to say Gail’s goal to compete in 2020 is right on track and I am sure you will agree she looks fabulous. I’d like to leave you with a few things to think about going into this year: 1. You are never too old to make a positive shift in life. 2. Exercise only benefits longevity of life when done correctly. 3. Check in with yourself and ask how your relationship with food and dieting is in general. 4. Asking for help doesn’t mean you aren’t capable, it is probably the most sensible thing you could do. Set yourself a goal like Gail did and commit to it 100%. We all deserve the best of ourselves and it is only ourselves that can deliver that result. Enjoy YOUR journey

Underwood Miners Welfare Cricket Club Celebrate 125th Anniversary For over a hundred years cricket has figured heavily in the village. When entering the village of Underwood the sign even features an image of the wickets. Past players have gone on to play for county and country and include Charlie Harris, his brother Ken, Alan Gill and Cyril Poole. In the 60’s Jeff Astle went on to play football for Notts County, West Brom and the national side. Suzanne Redfern opened the bowling for our 2nd X1 in the early 1990s, she then went on to play for England Ladies, competing in six Tests and fifteen ODIs between 1995 and 1999. Last year Sue became the first female cricketer to have played and officiated at a Cricket World Cup. She is now an international umpire and was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s 92nd birthday honours. Here at Underwood we are dedicated to being a fun and friendly environment in which everyone has the opportunity to participate in or watch a game of cricket regardless of their skill level. We are striving to maintain the fantastic game of English village cricket. Sadly, last season we lost our 2nd X1 due to a lack of players. However, we have negotiated a ground share with Heanor Town Cricket Club who will play their home matches at Underwood. Thus, ensuring that cricket is still played every weekend within the village. Fixtures for both clubs will be posted on the gate and on our website www.umwcc.co.uk . This year we will be running the ALL STARS scheme again for 5 – 8 year olds! For further details follow us on Facebook or Twitter, log on to our website or www.ecb. co.uk/play/all-stars Come along and see for yourself! WE ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR NEW PLAYERS AND SUPPORTERS! Could YOU be part of our next 125 years?! We are planning a family celebration day for the club’s landmark year. Watch this space for more details!

New Play Equipment at Basil Russell Playing Field

Looking Forward to 2019 In November 2018, the Greasley MW Bowls Club concluded its year with their annual dinner and competition prize night. The event, held at The Hogs Head, was well attended and enjoyed by everyone. Most outdoor clubs now go into hibernation, but preparations are already underway as next season’s fixtures are put on the 2019 calendar. This year the club have joined a 3 by 3 league and travel to new opponents with visits to Lowdham, Burton Joyce and Chilwell. Last season, the most worrying issue was the poor condition of Coronation Park, Eastwood, their home green. The club are in touch with Broxtowe council who have completed extensive levelling work, but repairing the damage to the grass, caused largely by the drought in 2018, is ongoing. During these troubled times at least they have the challenges of the new outdoor bowls season to look forward to and their quest to attract new players with potential is ongoing. The club offers coaching at special concessionary rates at the green and can also introduce you to the nearby Nottingham Indoor Bowls Centre during the winter season. You are under no obligation and many people bowl for the social side of the game. Interested? Give our secretary a call on 01773 716076.

Nuthall Parish Council with the support of Broxtowe Borough Council's Pride in Parks initiative proudly unveiled their additional new play equipment at Basil Russell on Saturday 5th January. Mayor of Broxtowe, Cllr Derek Burnett (BEM) gave a speech about how important play facilities are and that he supports the Pride in Parks initiative. Nuthall Parish Council Chairman, Cllr Michael Spencer thanked everyone for coming and encouraged the young ones to try out the newly installed zip wire, which has been proving very popular. The play equipment was designed to reflect the increasing need for inclusivity and consists of a bowl swing to allow children to swing safely and easily and a ground level roundabout, ideal for those in wheelchairs. A new climb and slide combo was added following consultation carried out over the summer, linked by a trim trail. Finally, and a particular favourite of the Chairman, are two bucket seat spinners for those who like to make themselves dizzy, one donated by supplier of the equipment, Kompan and the other by the installation contractors. The Council are looking to further investment in the park with consultation having already taken place. The proposals include various items of exercise equipment along with an outdoor table tennis table next to the tennis courts to encourage community fitness and fun. Work is likely to start in the Spring with a view to being open in time for the end of May.

on yer bike! A few months ago I decided to forgo my personal safety and ride a bicycle to work. Why, might you ask, would a middle-aged man decide to do this? Well, ultimately this is all about getting regular exercise, having a faster commute, and saving some money. Don’t worry, I have no plans to become a MAMIL*, nobody needs to see me in all my aerodynamic glory, but I thought it may be worth sharing the experience for those thinking of doing the same. After all, how hard could it be after twenty years of not going near a bike? STUCK IN THE PAST It turns out that a lot has changed. Most importantly bike technology has moved on. Compared to when I last got in the saddle I feel like a Russian monkey in a space suit. I was bewildered by the choices. I used to have a five-speed Raleigh racing bike, with rubber block brakes and a gear lever on the side of the frame. Now I have to deal with more gears than I can count, too many cogs, hydraulic disc brakes, and bike frames made of materials that are lighter than air. Then I have the choice of racer, hybrid, cyclocross, mountain, hardtail, and more besides. Fortunately I know plenty of people who are already competent cyclists and I went with the following advice: ‘get a bullet-proof hybrid for commuting. Something that is low maintenance and you can’t break’. BUYER BEWARE So armed with all the information I could find I went to a local bike shop and was well attended by the staff. Having test ridden a bike that took my fancy I then loaded up with gear. Second piece of advice I was given was as follows: ‘Get a helmet, lights, hi-vis jacket, and a bike pump’. Armed with this I felt safe that I had the basics covered and didn’t resort to the classic blunder of trying to buy everything in the bike shop. To be honest, I think the staff took pity on me. FIRST RIDE So, I’d got the bike and the kit. Now I had to ride the thing. The third piece of advice I was given now stuck in my mind: ‘you’ve bought the bike, now make sure you ride it’. I was determined not to be someone who spent money on a bike and left it to gather dust in the garage. So I took it out for a spin down the ring road where there is a really wide cycle path (the further I was from traffic the better). About two miles in, and after a

rather violent attempt to change gears, the chain fell off and jammed itself between frame and deraileur (that’s the proper name for the big cog). Chastened, I had to walk my bike back home and phone a friend to help me out. Fortunately he was pretty understanding and glossed over my embarrassment and together we fixed the errant chain. ACHES AND PAINS Here’s something no-one tells you about riding a bike: your body will hate you for the first week or so. I’m relatively fit thanks to chasing my kids on a daily basis but I was the sorest man alive for the first week and a half of cycling. I decided to jump straight in and cycle to work every day which left me with aching legs, an inability to go up hills at anything more than a snail’s pace, and a really sore backside. I’m not proud about this, but it takes a while for your rear-end to get used to sitting on a saddle. Factor in all the bumps and potholes in Nottingham’s roads and I could make a case for mandatory cushions on my office chair. But it wears off fast, soon I was whizzing to work on a regular basis OTHER PEOPLE Here’s the other thing people don’t tell you: the minute you get on a bike you will become a militant cyclist. I’m not kidding, pedestrians, dog walkers, parked cars, traffic lights, drivers, students, they’re all wrong. None of them understand the trials of riding a bike and they are clearly subservient to your priority on the road or cyclepath. Now this is all a matter of perspective, but you’ll be amazed just how quickly you become Judgy McJudgeson of Judgeville on your commute. Good luck with that, the trick is to not buy into the idea that somehow only you know what you’re doing. So that’s it, my first foray into the world of cycling. Come back in a year and I’ll probably be clad head to foot in cycling gear with a garage full of bikes. *MAMIL - middle-aged man in lycra Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

a helping hand ‘Riding The White Horse And Living In Its Shadow’ Dave Straw’s Book Launch

9th March 2019

At Eastwood Baptist Church Percy Street NG16 3EP 10am - 4pm Dave Straw, a retired plumbing and heating engineer, has spent two years writing a book called ‘Riding the White Horse and Living in its Shadow’. It began as a means of expressing his grief at the loss of his only surviving son in January 2016, after a 25 year battle with heroin addiction. Gary, who was 40 years old when he died, was not only his son but his best friend, through their mutual passion for cat fishing. As the writing of the book progressed he began to realise this story may be of help to others in the same situation, and he subsequently contacted the charity Hetty’s, based at Mansfield . Hetty’s were delighted to support him, and felt it was a tragic story, and it would be beneficial for it to be told. Dave has funded the printing of the book, which Moorley’s printers, Ilkeston are publishing. All the profits from the 250 copies will go to Hetty’s, and they are due from the printers early in 2019 ready for the book launch on the 9th March 2019. The cover describes the book as ‘ A compelling and heart-breaking story of a young man’s addiction to heroin and the tragic and devastating effect this addiction had upon himself and his family, as seen through the eyes of his father’ Dave describes it as a hopeless situation, where so many false dawns were experienced until a parent’s worst nightmare became a reality.

a helping hand Charity Calls For Local Volunteers

Equality Rules... Doesn’t It? by Helen Jones

Contact the Elderly is a national charity dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people. The charity is planning a tea party group in Kimberley and Hucknall due to demand, where older guests will meet one Sunday afternoon each month for tea, cake and companionship. The charity is urgently appealing for volunteers who could spare a few hours each month to drive one or two older guests to their tea, or host the group once or twice a year – and enjoy a cuppa themselves! The charity aims to relieve the acute loneliness of isolated older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone and struggle to get out. Each older guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home, where they meet with a small group for tea, chat and friendship. The group is warmly welcomed by a different host each month, but the drivers remain the same which means that over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship. Residents in the Kimberley and Hucknall areas, who are interested in volunteering for Contact the Elderly as a tea party host, group coordinator or driver, or who know of people who would benefit from attending, can contact Chloe Brown chloe.brown@ contact-the-elderly.org.uk 0207 240 0630 or Freephone 0800 716543 or apply online at www.contact-the-elderly.org.uk/volunteer

I was intrigued but also a little saddened to read that Paralympic swimmer Liz Johnson, who was born with cerebral palsy, has launched a new firm with a mission to transform employment for disabled people. It’s a sad indictment of our society that in 2019 there is still prejudice and misgivings surrounding employing people with physical impairments. According to disability charity Scope, 19% of working age adults are disabled – that’s a large number of people with skills that could enhance the workplace. Did you know that discrimination against any form of disabled candidate is actually unlawful under the Equality Act 2010? This applies to both physical and mental disability. In my last article I touched on the importance of good mental health in the workplace and being supportive of colleagues. In any organisation senior management should also demonstrate fair and equal hiring practices by always considering applicants who are disabled. As an employment business we have placed many candidates who had different physical needs with clients who have been happy to accommodate and benefit from the skills and experience they bring to the role. The world is a diverse place and so should the workplace be. There are many organisations who offer help and advice if you or anyone you know has been affected by this issue. J M Wills - A Service You Can Trust By making a properly drawn-up will, you can decide what will happen to your property and possessions after your death, ensuring that your loved ones are provided for and that they have one less thing to worry about. A will ensures you can leave your property and possessions to whoever you choose, although advice should be obtained to ensure you have made reasonable provisions for your dependants. At a time when modern families are becoming increasingly “blended making a will now is even more important then ever.

Who will your family turn to when no will has been written to guide them? If you have made a will, when was the last time you reviewed this? Time and circumstances might mean that a will made several years ago is no longer appropriate to your current situation. J M Wills & Legal Services can make the whole process easy and it can be carried out in the comfort of your own home where they can help you make these hard decisions.

There are also a number of ďŹ nancial considerations that have to be considered like inheritance tax and old age planning.

Onwards, upwards. Your hard work and talent is being recognised by those who are in a position to help you progress. Take the favour / leg up / promotion they offer with full confidence. You’re going to go further faster, with the support of others, than you currently think is possible.

Open up. A tough situation is going to resolve very soon, and it’s all down to the shrewd, focussed moves you make. It may require undertaking a journey of some kind (physical or emotional), a change of landscape from your usual scene. New views provoke new ideas, and the insight you need to make a big difference.

Love is in the air.

A blast from the past.

Whatever relationship status you’re at, expect it to go up a notch. Single to flirting, flirting to courting, courting to settling down etc. Your best hopes and expectations in love can be fulfilled this month ahead. Aim high, share your desires, be led by hope, not fear. Love is in the air…

Someone, or something, you held great affection for long ago is going to return to your life- with a bang! It may all prove to be so nostalgic, magical and joyous that it actually causes you to question what you’ve been doing with your life this far… Enjoy the reunion, but know that where you’re at is all good too.

AT THE HEART OF YOUR FUNERAL PLANNING When we started providing funeral pre-payment plans more than 20 years ago, the idea of ‘paying for your funeral in advance’ was quite unusual. Today, funeral plans are more well known, and available from a wide variety of sources. However, you wouldn’t buy a will from a DIY superstore, so why buy something so important from someone who knows nothing about funerals, your local area, or you. Buying a plan from Gillotts means you can sit down with one of our staff who know local facilities and talk about what you want your funeral to be like. If you wish, you can go into details: music, flowers, what everyone should wear, which photographs to Eastwood Office

o Heroes: w T ia m e d a My Hero Ac : s w ie v e R Die Hard Bur ton Superhero Superhero culture is THE culture right now. It’s not only the American publications, Marvel and DC, who have a superpowered universe to delight fans with. Japan too have their own quirky society filled with people flying across the skies and shooting ice from their palms. It has become one of the most popular and successful anime’s of this generation. So with three exceptionally received seasons under its belt, My Hero Academia is releasing its first film: My Hero Academia Two Heroes. For those who haven’t had their eyes glued to the previously mentioned three seasons (which you should), My Hero Academia takes place in a society where almost everyone has super powers, to a point where being a superhero is a job, with many prestigious schools training the next generation of heroes. The show follows the promising young hero, Deku, who is in the best hero school in Japan and is also being mentored by the world’s best hero (their Superman): Allmight. The movie, My Hero Academia Two Heroes takes place about a third of the way through season two of the show and tells the untold story of when Deku accompanied Allmight to a hero-gadget expo. But when the tower that is hosting the opening event is attacked and all the civilians and pro heroes inside are taken hostage it is up to Deku and his rookie friends to save everyone and stop whoever hatched this nefarious plan. The animation is stunning. From the character’s idle animation of nervously clasping their hands as their hair flows in the wind, to the jaw dropping action sequences, this movie will blow your mind. Immediately, Two Heroes treats you to an action packed introduction that in other films would have been the big set piece, but here it simply sets the stage for the immense fist pumping moments to come. The ever rising stakes, epic choreography, and emotion amplifying themes that the series are known for, all perfectly combine to craft some of the most entertaining superpowered fight scenes ever put on the big screen. The My Hero Academia characters are just so damn good. Each and every one has their

own fully formed and unique perspective to bring to the table, slap on top of that everyone having varying and cool powers, you can’t help but pick out your favourites and get highly invested in their misadventures. It is this quality that really makes the action of My Hero Academia stand out. You deeply care for those who are punching at 100mph on screen, and seeing them go beyond their limits to stand up for what they believe in, not only brings on the goosebumps, but gives you something to aspire to. Whether you are a My Hero Academia fan or simply a fan of great superhero fiction, Two Heroes is sure to have you standing up and pumping your fist in the air while chanting “Plus Ultra”. With great characters brought to life through entertaining dialogue and amazing animation, forced to show off their superpowered abilities in exceptionally epic set pieces, the Avengers might just have some competition. My Hero Academia Two Heroes = 9/10 © Sam Burton (aged 21)

Nottinghamshire Police PCSO (Police Community Support Officer) Paula Hipkiss gives us an insight into the valuable role which she has held for several years. Q: What is your role? A: My role is to provide a link between the community which we serve and the police. I consider it to be a valuable role as we provide a visible presence on the streets of Nottinghamshire. We engage in conversations (intelligence gathering), visit homes to provide crime prevention advice, offer general advice, visit schools, carry out foot patrols, scene preservation, road traffic collision traffic control, low-level crime reporting and covering general policing issues. Q: Have you had to face any challenging/new experiences? A: Every day is a new challenge and no two days are the same. You need to be able to think on your feet, problem solve/offer alternative outcomes for peoples issues and problems. I have overcome many personal challenges in my time as a PCSO but I think I have learned from all my experiences and try to put them into practice to help others. Q: What does a typical day at work look like for you?

A: Every day is different but generally we discuss issues that have arisen or that need looking at both individually and as a team. Our sergeant will ask what our daily patrol plan is? This may include any agency meetings we may have. We will also catch up on any paperwork/computer work outstanding. Apart from any tasks our sergeant or control room give us, we plan our own day but you do need to be out and about and visible wherever possible. We can cover scene preservations, road traffic collision traffic flow patrols, burglary foot patrols, visits to burglary victims and house to house enquiries. My area is around a small town centre so I visit all my shops. We attend local meetings, where applicable, to offer crime prevention advice to all. You are encouraged to get involved with any local events. If there are any events in my area I will cover them (ie family events, Beavers/ Cubs/Rainbows talks, light switchons, Remembrance Sunday, Summer Play Days, Bonfire Night, Halloween, parades through the town etc). More about Paula’s role in the next edition...
