On a cold dark night nothing warms you up like a steaming bowl of soup with some crusty bread. All these recipes are easy to make and taste delicious.

Cauliflower Cheese Soup

Curried Lentil Soup

1tbsp veg oil 1 or 2 tbsp curry powder 1 onion chopped 3 carrots peeled & diced finely 250g lentils 1.2 ltrs veg stock salt & pepper tabasco sauce (optional) Greek yogurt to serve

n

k

S OU P it che Method

This soup is mild, thick and very creamy. 30g butter 1x onion chopped 1x cauliflower cut into florets 250ml milk 600ml veg stock 150g mature cheddar grated salt & pepper 1 tsp paprika

Method

Melt butter in a large saucepan. Cook onions gently until soft. Add the cauliflower and stir. Add stock. Bring to boil and simmer until florets are just tender. This will only take a few minutes. Take off heat and allow to cool for 10 mins. Add grated cheese and milk and stir. Liquidise until smooth. Place back in pan and heat gently. Season to taste. You shouldn't need much salt due to the cheese. Once in bowls sprinkle with paprika. Also delicious with crispy bacon scattered over.

Heat oil in a large saucepan. Add onion and fry gently for 10 mins, add garlic and fry for another 5 mins til onions are soft. Add curry powder, stir and cook for 1 min. Add carrots and mix well. Cook for 1 min. Add lentils and stock and stir well. Bring to the boil and simmer until lentil and carrot are soft (about 20 mins). Liquidise and place back in pan. Taste and season accordingly. I find no salt needed if I use stock cubes. If you want the soup to have an extra kick add a few drops of Tabasco. To serve add a swirl of Greek yogurt to each bowl.

French Onion Soup

30g butter 2 tbsp olive oil 700g onions thinly sliced 1 ltre beef stock 250ml white wine 2 cloves garlic crushed salt & pepper to taste French stick 200/250g gruyere cheese grated Method

Heat oil and butter in large saucepan and fry onion and garlic gently until browned and soft (about 30 mins). Be careful not to burn the onions. Add the stock and wine and bring to the boil then simmer for 20 mins. Season to taste. Thickly slice the baguette and lightly toast both sides. Sprinkle cheese on top of the slices and grill until the cheese is bubbling. Put soup in bowls and float the baguette slices on top to serve.

Find your Safer Neighbourhoods team by entering your postcode on the homepage of www. nottinghamshire.police.uk

From Sergeant Andy Browning... We have started 2013 with the fantastic news that Kimberley and Eastwood are safer neighbourhoods to live in. We’ve been working hard on tackling antisocial behaviour and we are pleased to see that numbers of crimes in this area have fallen by 1,108 over the last 12 months. This is a huge coup for us and is something that has been achieved thanks to the determination and commitment of our officers, by working closely with partnership organisations and with help from the public. We have particularly targeted our efforts on people we believe are on the verge of antisocial behaviour and through the use of Antisocial Behaviour Orders. One of the ways we do this is through a scheme we started with Broxtowe Borough Council where we draft Antisocial Behaviour Contracts (ABCs) personalised agreements between an individual and most often their parent or guardian. People who agree with these contracts also agree not to behave in a certain way and if an ABC is broken, or not maintained, ASBOs can be applied for through the court. The number of burglaries and incidents of vehicle crime have also reduced. These are crimes we take very seriously and to see these numbers fall is very encouraging. Again we have conducted specific operations to try to prevent vehicles

and homes in our community from being targeted. We look at trends over the year and use intelligence to target our patrols. Over the last few weeks we have had a high visible presence in the area, which has clearly had a positive impact. We plan to continue our work to drive these figures down even further but we would also like to remind the public that you have a role to play in ensuring you don’t become a victim. Always ensure your car is locked and the windows are closed when unattended. Don’t leave valuable items, including power leads, in the vehicle and, where possible, leave the glove box open and the boot parcel shelf off to show there is nothing of worth inside. Keep your vehicle in a locked garage, otherwise park it in a busy, well-lit area. Consider marking items like satellite navigation units and stereos with a forensic etching system or liquid, such as SmartWater, and record them on a property register, such as at www.immobilise.com There is still work to do in the area to ensure residents live safely and without fear of crime. One of our ongoing targets for the year is proactively tackling drug crime and would always welcome members of the public to come forward with any information on this or any other crime via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The hi-tech treasurer hunters have travelled from far and wide to try and find one of the geocaches which Broxtowe Borough Council set up last year in its four Queen Elizabeth II Playing Fields at Hall Om Wong Open Space, Kimberley; Coronation Park, Eastwood; Broadgate Park, Beeston; and Queen Elizabeth Park, Stapleford to encourage people to explore the borough's parks and open spaces. Since then, the Brock the Badger geocoin has travelled over 163 miles. You can track the ‘Brock the Badger’ trackable geocoin at the Geocaching website using the unique tracking code - TBNMTT. Cabinet member for Environment, Councillor Stan Heptinstall said "It’s great to see the geocaches are being so well visited. Broxtowe Borough Council is always looking for ways to encourage people to discover the borough's local parks, open spaces, countryside and heritage and the geocaches are a modern way of exploring the local area for all the family." A 'geocache' is usually a small concealed waterproof container holding a pen and logbook for the 'treasure hunters' to sign. Larger containers may also include small toys, trinkets and trackable items which the geocacher exchanges. If items are taken out of the cache, then something of equal or greater value is left in return. The coordinates of each geocache can be found by registering for free membership at Geocaching website. The coordinates are then transferred to a Global Positioning System (GPS) or smart phone devise for people to seek out the hidden caches. Travel Bugs and geocoins can also be placed into the caches and each can be set on a special mission of the owner's choice. Each trackable item is etched with a unique code that can be used to log its movements from cache to cache.

EASTWOOD PUPILS DIG IN FOR NATIONAL TREE WEEK School children dug in to kick-start over £30,000 of improvements to Eastwood’s Mansfield Road Recreation Ground, as they marked National Tree Week in November by planting 11 semi-mature trees at the site. The Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor M a r g a r e t Handley braved the elements alongside pupils from The Priory Catholic School, Ly n n c r o f t Primary School and Eastwood Comprehensive School to plant semi-mature oak, silver birch and mountain ash trees in the park, as well as over 6,000 snowdrops, fritillaries, winter aconites, bluebells and narcissus flower bulbs. The event, organised in partnership between Broxtowe Borough Council and Groundwork Greater Nottingham, complements £33,400 of renovations to the recreation ground and memorial garden. The improvements to Mansfield Road Recreation Ground will provide a more welcoming green space by installing new fencing, more accessible footpaths, areas of formal and informal planting, seating and improved car parking. Part of the area will also be managed to benefit wildflowers and wildlife. Once improvements to the Memorial Garden are complete, local people will also be able to purchase and dedicate a tree or seat in the area with a Book of Memorial to be held in the adjacent D.H. Lawrence Heritage Centre.

BROXTOWE START-UP PACKAGE Last November Broxtowe Borough Council launched a brand new and innovative Business Start-Up scheme. The scheme aims to assist businesses moving into any of borough’s town centres by offering a grant of up to £5000 per new business. The Council was awarded £100k as part of the High Street Innovation Fund (HSIF) in March 2012. The funding is for high street initiatives in the four main town centres of Beeston, Eastwood, Stapleford and Kimberley and is specifically to reduce the number of vacant units in town centres. Councillor David Watts, Broxtowe Borough Council’s Portfolio holder for Economy and Regeneration said: “Broxtowe is committed to breathing new life into our town centres, supporting local shops and local jobs. The packages on offer will help in our vision and I would urge ‘would be’’ shop owners to contact our Town Centre Team.”

ROYAL OAKS HONOUR QUEEN ELIZABETH PLAYING FIELDS Four Royal Oak saplings have been planted at each of Broxtowe’s Queen Elizabeth II Playing Fields thanks to a partnership with the Woodland Trust. The trees were donated to Broxtowe Borough Council by the Fields in Trust, in recognition of Broadgate Park, Beeston; Coronation Park, Eastwood; Hall om Wong Open Space, Kimberley and Queen Elizabeth II Park, Stapleford receiving their new status after being nominated by the Council.

LIGHT NIGHT FEBRUARY 8th

This year the event includes some exciting new entertainment, music, installations and projections and the return of some family favourites. St Andrew’s with Castle Gate Church on Goldsmith Street will be providing affordable meals and light refreshments during the evening. Come into the city and take a look.....

28

The oak trees were grown from acorns gathered from the Royal Household Estates and will provide a further living legacy to commemorative plaques installed at each of the four sites earlier this year after they received Queen Elizabeth II status. The award offers each of the parks protection as areas of green space for the public to enjoy and enables the Council to bid for funding to further improve the sites. Fields in Trust is a national charity which operates throughout the UK to ensure everyone has access to free, local outdoor space for sport, play and recreation. Four sites in the borough have been designated as part of the national Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge to permanently protect 2,012 outdoor recreational spaces. For more information, please contact Broxtowe Borough Council on 0115 917 3643, email tim.crawford@broxtowe. gov.uk or visit www.broxtowe.gov.uk/ jubilee

For many of us alcohol can be an enjoyable part of everyday life. For others it can cause difficulties. If you are trying to cut down on the amount of alcohol you drink, or to stop drinking altogether and you’re finding it harder than you had imagined, a support group might be the answer. Positive Outcomes is one of only a handful of independent alcohol support groups in Nottinghamshire run wholly by and for people who aim to control their drinking – cutting down or cutting it out. We are not health professionals, just ordinary people who have stopped drinking or who want to control their drinking. We meet each week in Nottingham city centre to listen, discuss and help each other in a safe, confidential and nonjudgemental environment. We are a drop-in group - there is no charge and you can come to as many or as few meetings as you like. We hope that we can help you but if you find we are not right for you, there is no pressure to come back. So if you think we can help and you would like to find out more, contact us for information on these numbers: Oxford Corner: 0115 948 5505 Mon, Tues & Fri, 9.30am-5pm Wed:9.30am-8pm,Thursday1pm-5pm Self Help Nottingham: 0115 911 1661 Mon to Fri 9am – 1pm E-mail: info@selfhelp.org.uk

a helping hand My name is Hayley I’m 24 and I have Asperger’s Syndrome. Despite this I have gone on to study my MSc in Forensic Mental Health at Nottingham Trent University. One area in which I lack is selfconfidence, so alongside other Trent students I have signed up to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in August 2013 for Child Reach International. In order to take part in the trek I have to raise £2450 for the charity. Child Reach International uses some of the money raised to fund the trip but at least 50% goes directly into the charity. To help support me and the charity donations can be made at: https://mydonate. bt.com/fundraisers/hayleypykett or a £3 donation can be made by texting: UNLOCK 109544 to 70007. THANK YOU X

Rising to the Heights by Gloria Morgan When I am out and about I always try to remember the old advice to ‘look up’. This applies not only inside interesting old buildings but in the great outdoors. Having looked at what is way up there above me, I often long to follow where my eyes have led. I can’t be the first person to feel this irresistible urge because wherever there is a high point rising majestically above sea level you can be pretty sure someone will have built some mechanical means of going up there.

and roll. It was at that point I gave up taking photographs and hung on for dear life. Cable cars actually have a very good safety record. When there has been an accident it has sometimes involved unbelievably bad luck. It was poor steering on somebody’s part in Singapore some years ago when an oil rig that was being towed into position collided with the cable. In Austria, a helicopter flying by carrying a concrete block to a building site dropped it onto the cable. The captain and crew of a US Marine Corps jet on manoeuvres faced a court martial when their plane accidentally sliced through a cable near Trento, in Italy. Our nearest cable car is at Matlock Bath, going up to the Heights of Abraham. This popular tourist attraction was the first ever alpine cable car erected in Britain in 1984. Being hilly, Matlock is ideally suited to high-rise transportation. In 1893, in homage to San Francisco’s famous ‘trolley’, Matlock installed a special steep route tram all the way up Bank Road from Crown Square with a half-way stop at Smedley Street. At that time it was the steepest such route in the world with a gradient of 1 in 5½.

On a recent visit to London I was all set to take the lift to the open-air observation deck on the 72nd floor of the new ‘Shard of Glass’ building in the city, only to be disappointed that it is not yet open to the public. However, heading towards the River Thames at Royal Victoria Docks, I got my heart’s desire. Last year Transport For London strung a cable car across the water to the O2 arena and I could not resist the temptation to climb aboard the capital’s newest tourist attraction. There were few people about and I was on my own in the 8-seater pod. It was a shame about the weather as the panorama promised to be sensational but even on a grey day I was getting a pretty good view of east London. I settled down to enjoy the experience as we climbed to the full height of 295ft above the river. I hadn’t anticipated quite what an exciting ride I was in for. Unlike the London Eye, which has much larger pods firmly bolted on to the wheel, the small pods of the cable car dangle precariously from the wire and are vulnerable to every puff of wind. As my pod moved out from the lee of the machinery tower, it was buffeted by a great gust of wind and we started to rock

Sadly it closed down in 1927, so I can but dream of the delights of riding up the hill. But wherever else I go I keep looking up and if I see a skyscraper, a cable car, a chair lift or a rack and pinion railway, I’m off, rising to the heights.

chorus roundup Bestwood Male Voice Choir’s Diamond Jubilee year drew to a close with a very successful run of high profile concerts. On 5 December, the choir were invited to the magnificant Southwell Minster to take part in the Age Concern and Age UK Support Group’s ‘A Christmas Celebration’. The following evening saw the choir singing to a capacity audience at St Leonard’s Church, Wollaton for the Rotary Club of Wollaton Park’s Christmas Music Concert. On 12 December the choir returned to Southwell Minster, where it had been invited to take part in the Emergency Services Carol Service, along with the Nottinghamshire Police Band. St John’s Church, Mansfield was the setting for the next concert on 13 December, the BBC Radio Nottingham’s Christmas Carol Service, led by Sunday Breakfast Show Presenter, Sarah Julian. The service was broadcast on BBC Radio Nottingham on Christmas Eve at 6pm and Christmas Day at 12 noon. The choir’s final contribution of the year was at St Mark’s Church, Bestwood Village on Sunday 16 December, joining in the service of Lessons and Carols and singing two carols alone. A very fitting end to a very exciting and rewarding Diamond Anniversary Year. Grand Central Chorus... A Champion year ahead

A wedding in the ancient and romantic Newstead Abbey, was the scene of a small Chorus performance in December. The Novotel, Long Eaton was the more mundane setting for the Chorus’s next appearance and proved an exacting start to the New Year. It was the venue for the National Barbershop Directors Academy, the chorus being used by the American educator to display the skills and techniques required of a successful Director. The New Year sees the members selling draw tickets, with a first prize of £400, to raise funds for the visit to Toronto where the Chorus are representing the U.K. in the International Barbershop competition. If you would like some, contact us. An auction is planned, sponsors being sought and a concert being arranged, the latter at Emmanuel Church in Loughborough on the 20th April, 2013. See the website www.grandcentralchorus.com for up to date information. If you are seeking an entertainment contact Peter on 01530 243822 or e-mail as below. Fees are negotiable. Quality is guaranteed. E-mail: publicity.gcc@gmail.com with any enquiry. Rehearsals are at Harrington School, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4BJ at 7.15.pm every Wednesday. If you are a potential singer, sponsor,

Reader Questionnaire: RESULTS A MASSIVE THANKS to all of you who took the trouble to fill in your questionnaires. We really do appreciate it. Congratulations to Mr Stevenson who wins a £50 Tesco voucher and to Ms Frankland and Mrs Owens who both win £25 vouchers of their choice. We were overwhelmed by the positive and constructive answers to the questions. Here’s what we found out............

98.6% of you read and keep the magazine

Great news for advertisers and contributors (and us!!!)

The main reasons given for keeping the magazines were to find local businesses, local services and to find out what's going on in the area. You also love your puzzles, competitions and offers so we will try to include as many of these as we possibly can. History was also popular and we would like to thank all our wonderful contributors. Wow - this is great news for us and all the businesses in the mags...from oven cleaners to river cruises, gardeners to fitness classes you love them all!! ...Really good , great rates, well satisfied, super... were all comments you used to describe the service you received.

“ “ “ “ “ “ ““ “ “ “ Think you are doing a great job. The mag has improved each year.

of you said the magazine meets your needs. And more than half of you have used more than one business from the magazine!!!

favourite sections lots of you simply said "All of it". For those that did specify, adverts came top, followed by local news and events. Most of the sections got a mention which is great!

Some we have already taken on board; money off vouchers, more competitions, interviews with local traders Some we are working on right now; bringing back top tips page, restaurant offers Others are all noted and will be considered at a later date. Thanks to all of you who have agreed to help us on an ongoing basis with our spot checking. There's the chance to win a tenner every other month for answering a very quick phone call. If you missed the questionnaire but would like to be on our call list there is still time.

Simply call or email your details to info@ng5.org.uk or call 0115 926 9777.
