Now the nights are lighter and flowers are blooming it feels like summer is well and truly on the way! With warmer days, our thoughts turn to bbq’s and picnics. Abby, aka the Fishwifes Kitchen has kindly given us some delicious recipes to try. Get that BBQ cleaned! Thanks to everyone who has sent in their reader questionnaire (last edition). We will be publishing results in the next edition. One suggestion was for a sports page - thanks to Vinnie this will now be a regular feature. Happy Reading Ali, Cat, Sarah & Francine

Nottingham Rugby

A

nother season, and another failed attempt at a play-off spot for Nottingham. Inconsistent results were the prime factor, only being able to string together 3 victories at most throughout the season. The year ended on a high however, the Green and Whites thumping Cornish Pirates 55-33, including a hat-trick of tries for winger Iongi. The British and Irish Cup was no different – Nottingham failing to move off bottom place in group 4, finishing with 1 win and 1 draw.

With departures comes arrivals, and new Director of Rugby Simon Beetham was not hesitant to bring in fresh faces, alongside a notable returnee in hooker Jimmy Stevens. James Stephenson and Ollie Evans both join from Ealing Trailfinders and Jersey respectively, and 28-year old Ben Hooper adds to the dominant front-row. Nottingham’s fifth signing comes in the shape of Jordan Coghlan from Munster, who racked up just 8 appearances last season on his developmental contract.

Aside from the players, Head Coach Martin Haag (leaving to coach the England U20 side) has been replaced by Irishman Ian Costello, who joins Nottingham from PRO12 side Munster, where he was assistant coach and in charge of both kicking and defence.

Nottingham enter the 2016/17 Championship with a new coach, new players, and surely a new mind set to reach the dreamy heights of a top four finish. It hasn’t happened since 1991, but maybe, just maybe, the Green and Whites might make a return to the top flight in the upcoming season.

Dan Mugford leaves for Premiership side Sale Sharks whilst prop Conor Carey departs for Connaught. Speaking about the departures, operations director Chris Simon said: “The fact that Conor will be playing in the PRO12 next season and Dan in the Premiership, just goes to show the clear developmental pathway we have here at Nottingham and this is something that will continue to be at the heart of what we do here at The Bay.”

Umbrella...ella...ella by Gloria Morgan I have had an umbrella in my hand many, many times over the past months – no, not a cocktail umbrella, although that’s a nice thought – a proper job for keeping the rain off. It started me thinking – who invented them and when? It turns out there is quite a history. The earliest mention I could find was in a Chinese book, “The Rites of Zhou”, written 2,400 years ago. So they have been around quite a while. And we have come full circle – today, most umbrellas are made in China. In fact, the city of Shangyu has more than a thousand umbrella factories. Umbrellas appeared in Europe around 1700. An English dictionary published in 1708 lists the word. The frame was of wood, topped with leather or fabric. Innovations to the basic design quickly followed. A lightweight, folding umbrella was produced in Paris in 1710. In 1760, another Frenchman designed an umbrella concealed in a walking stick; at the click of a button the hidden umbrella sprang open. By 1800, pocket umbrellas on steel frames were for sale in London. The Victorians loved them. An umbrella featured in a novel by Charles Dickens, in 1844. His eccentric creation, Mrs Gamp, was never without her a battered black umbrella. She became such a popular character that the word “gamp” entered the English language as slang for an umbrella.

Ask great-granddad, he’ll know it. What about that iconic cinema umbrella scene in 1952 with Gene Kelly “Singing in the Rain”? Then, in 1964, Mary Poppins came sailing down by umbrella into Cherry Tree Lane and captured all our hearts. In 1978, an umbrella was used as a lethal weapon in London. An outspoken anticommunist dissident, Georgi Markov, was killed, allegedly by the KGB, while he was waiting for a bus on Waterloo Bridge. He was stabbed in the leg by the spike of an umbrella which delivered a dose of the deadly poison ricin. Perhaps suggested by this true-life event, umbrellas in films then became deadly weapons. The 1981 James Bond movie “For Your Eyes Only”, featured an experimental under-water umbrella that clamped down on its user with steel claws. In the 1992 film “Batman Returns”, The Penguin had an umbrella-gun. In more recent years, umbrellas hit the charts again. Rihanna song’s was a Grammy Award winner in 2008 when it topped the U.K. singles list for ten consecutive weeks. Makes you wonder what the humble brolly will inspire next.

Umbrellas have sparked ideas in many creative people. In the 1880’s two of my favourite artists painted them. Monet gave us a wet dog-walk. Renoir explored the variety of their curves. City gents with their striped trousers, bowler hat and trade-mark rolled umbrella were parodied to perfection by Charlie Chaplin, starting in his silent movies in 1914 and going on right until 1936. The Music Hall duo, Flanagan and Allen, didn’t just sing “Underneath the Arches”. In 1938 they entertained the nation with “Toodle luma luma, Toodle oh lay, Any umbrellas to mend today?”

Domenica becomes first female Unsung Football Hero chosen by The Nottingham

Even greater circulation for the Notts Guided Walks booklets

A woman known as “footie mum” has become the first female winner of an Unsung Football Hero award from the Nottingham Building Society (known as The Nottingham). Domenica Lopinto (47) from Newthorpe, formed Eastwood Athletic FC in 2013 along with her husband, Gianfranco, and is now Secretary, Treasurer, Welfare Officer and female coach and manager for youth and adult male teams at the club. Despite battling a long-term disability and also studying for a degree in social work, Domenica took her level one coaching qualification and started an U21 team, which now has over 25 players. She is also in the process of starting a new girls’ team called “Eastwood Athletic Pink Panthers”, which is causing a great deal of excitement. Domenica is a die-hard Nottingham Forest fan and part of her prize will be taking her husband and sons, Owen and Leonardo, to enjoy a Forest game from the luxury of the executive box. Part of Domenica’s prize is a football signed by the Forest players, which will take pride of place in the family home alongside the one awarded to Gianfranco last month. The Nottingham’s campaign ran throughout the 2015-16 football season and has found ten ‘unsung heroes’ who have shown extraordinary dedication and commitment to grassroots football.

42

Such is the growing demand for the Notts Guided Walks booklet, its circulation for 2016 has been pushed up to nearly 7,000 across the County, backed by a comprehensive web-site. Once again generously funded mainly by the Big Lottery, the Partnership has distributed its booklets to County and City libraries, information centres, visitor centres and country parks throughout the County. Most of the walks are short – up to about 4 or 6 miles, but with a few of 7 to 8 miles. As the booklets contain a large section of Health Walks for less able or recovering walkers, many health centres will receive copies too. These shorter walks are taken by trained leaders and organised by the county boroughs as part of a national scheme. Each of these guided walks will also be featured on the Notts Guided Walks’ website at www.nottsguidedwalks.co.uk which is updated with new walks during the year. It contains several well-illustrated selfguided walks in attractive areas for those who prefer to walk at their own pace, using downloaded instructions. Click on the ‘SelfGuided’ section of the web-site for further information. Just a small amount of regular exercise can make a huge improvement to a sedentary lifestyle, especially when linked to the friendly social outdoor atmosphere of a small walking group. Life is good for walkers!

The Secrets of Healthy Ageing The ultimate aim of growing old should be to have energy to drive your kids crazy. If for no other reason, then to repay them for those unruly teenage years. Thanks to science, there are some good indications as to how you can age without giving up your zest for life. Here is what we know so far:

A small amount of alcohol may help Before you reach for that bottle of wine, notice the small amount. According to a large, cross continent, population study, light drinkers live on average 3 years more than abstainers or heavy drinkers (1). Cheers to that.

Physical activity Moving 3 times a week may afford you 6 more disease free years with your loved ones (l). 6 more years. Imagine how many teenagers you could annoy in that time?

Less of the sweet stuff The older you get, the more efficient you become at storing, rather than using energy (4). Since sugar is the easiest energy source, eating less may mean you store less too. What’s more is that sugar has been found to accelerate ageing and the development of certain diseases (5). This doesn’t mean you can’t have sugar ever again but maybe just address whether those two sugars in your tea are really necessary.

Stay positive According to research, optimists stay healthier for longer (6). Thus, it turns out, laughter IS the best medicine.

1.

Fatty acid balance We all know fish is good for us and what we now also know is that omega 3 fatty acids may help the brain cope with ageing (2). Sadly, it isn’t enough just to eat some fish. The ratio of fat from fish vs fat from other sources (or fatty acid balance) should be considered. Ideally, aim for 1 portion of fish for every 3 portions of “other” fats (3). Other fat sources may include meat, nuts, seeds, butter, cheese & dairy products.

Oaks restaurant and bar is well situated in the heart of Nottingham. They serve simple, locally sourced meat cooked over a wood fired grill, and boy do they do a good job! As you would expect from the name there is an abundance of oak everywhere. From quirky tables and chairs to the walls! Large chandeliers of candles, along with the open flame grill, give this place a really cosy, relaxed feel. Service was friendly and attentive and Marcos, the manager, made sure all the customers were well looked after. This is the second review where the toilets are a must see - must be the new thing! The menu, while not massive, is well chosen. In our opinion, better to have a select few choices but done well, than a huge array of mediocre offerings. To start, we had some lovely quail Scotch eggs and a real beauty, baked Lincolnshire poacher cheese with toast. Despite many attempts, we have been unable to replicate this at home. We followed this with a tasty honeydew beer and black pepper chicken that has clearly been well marinated and king prawns with herbs and chilli which was really impressive. The grilled chicken bites and hand-cooked chips were “like no other chicken we have ever tasted” according to the children - high praise indeed! Even the desserts are made with locally sourced ingredients. We enjoyed apple tarte tatin with toffee apple ice cream along with a selection of other delicious ice creams.

Liquid refreshments are chosen with equal care. There is a great selection of craft beers and for all those cocktail lovers out there, the restaurant’s range of unique cocktails is available for just £4.50 each between Monday and Friday – happy days! OAKS also has several other offers during the week. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays diners can enjoy Rump Day – an 8oz Sirloin steak, handcooked chips and a glass of wine for £13.50. Diners on Saturdays can soak up the weekend from 12pm till 4pm with Bottomless Brunch, a choice of tasty brunch options with the option of unlimited Bloody Mary or Prosecco. The restaurant also offers a special Sunday roast menu, where kids eat free and meals start from £10. With live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, there are lots of reasons to give this place a go. Great quality food, bubbles, beer and a brilliant atmosphere – what’s not to like?

Go Al Fresco! Summer has finally arrived and it’s time to head out for bit of al fresco dining. Who doesn’t love a picnic or “pique-nique” as it first appeared in the 1692 edition of the “Origines de la Langue Française”. The piquenique was a kind of French version of the “bring your own” style meal, with everyone contributing a course or wine. The first reference in English in 1748, suggested the “picnic” was a meal eaten outdoors but a more elegant affair than the traditional farm-worker’s meal eaten during a break from the harvesting. Whatever its origins,

most of us can’t resist the lure of a sunny afternoon in the park or by the river. The challenge for us, of course, is the Great British summer weather. As soon as the sun comes out and the grass is dry enough to sit on, we need to be ready to seize the moment, grab the picnic rug and head out. Take a break from the traditional cheese & pickle and meat-paste sandwich staples and try one of these really simple, but a bit special, picnic suggestions to make the most of those fleeting summer days.

Picnic Sandwich Loaf This is one of my favourite picnic sandwiches, inspired by the young Irish singer and foodie, Donal Skehan. It is a bit more effort than your usual butty but well worth it (amount of filling does depend on the size of your loaf!) 1 long ciabatta loaf, sliced in half lengthways Handful of baby spinach leaves Few slices of roasted red pepper from a jar 4 slices prosciutto or Serrano ham Handful of basil Ball of Mozzarella, sliced Half a red onion, finely sliced 3 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tsp Dijon mustard Slice the ciabatta loaf in half lengthways, brush with olive oil on the cut surface and place, crust side down, under a hot grill for a few minutes until slightly browned and lightly toasted. Put the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, garlic and mustard in a bowl, then whisk them together until combined. Drizzle the bottom slice with about half the dressing and then arrange the rest of the ingredients in layers, starting with the spinach and red onion. Drizzle over the rest of the dressing

and place the other half of the ciabatta on top. Press down on the sandwich to squash all the layers together, wrap in greaseproof paper or baking parchment and tie it together with string. If you have something suitable to place on top for half an hour (I used a heavy wooden chopping board) that helps to stop the sandwich coming apart when sliced. Cut and serve in slices for the perfect picnic snack

Easy Lamb Koftas If you have a portable BBQ or can find a disposable one, add a hot dish to your picnic with these really simple Koftas. 500g minced lamb 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander Handful of chopped fresh Coriander 3 fat garlic cloves crushed 2 tsps dried Chilli Flakes (or chopped fresh red chillies) 1 tbsp chopped mint Salt and freshly ground black pepper oil for brushing Place all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl and combine well. Divide into 8 balls, then roll each ball on a board to form a sausage shape. Thread onto 4 metal skewers and brush with oil. Cook on a hot griddle or on your portable

barbecue for 4/5 mins each side. Ensure the meat is well sealed before turning to ensure they don’t stick to the grill. Serve with natural yoghurt, salad and flatbreads.

Portable Raspberry Ripple Cheesecake How do you transport a cheesecake in a picnic basket? Easy, make it in jar! 150g buttery biscuit (I used Fox’s Butter Crinkles) 150g cream cheese 150g double cream 5 tbsp icing sugar 2 tsp vanilla extract 500g raspberries 6 smallish lidded jars (jam jars for example) Blitz the biscuits to crumbs in a blender or place in a freezer bag or similar and crush with a rolling pin. Divide the biscuits between the jars. Whisk the cream cheese, cream, 4 tbsp icing sugar and vanilla extract until softly whipped. Tip half the raspberries and the remaining sugar into another bowl and purée with a fork. Ripple the purée through the cream and divide between the jars. Top each cheesecake with remaining raspberries, secure the lids and chill until it’s time to go. Transport in a cool box or bag.

pets Frankie, Ginny and Chester – homes at last? The previous life of Frankie the cat, rescued during a snowstorm by local charity Animal Accident Rescue Unit, is less of a mystery than why he has been waiting over a year for a home – as are fellow felines Ginny and Chester. Incredibly, these three long-termers are still being fostered, with Frankie’s carer explaining: ‘Frankie’s a healthy 3-year-old and perfect company, so we’ve no idea why he’s so overlooked.’ Abandoned Chester at about 4 years old is the perfect ‘gent’, whilst 6 year old affectionate Ginny craves attention. All three are “snap” FIV/FeLV blood-tested, for which they are clear – wormed, fleatreated, neutered, micro-chipped, litter trained plus vaccinated. Each new owner needs to continue the vaccinations. To offer one of these loving cats a home, contact the Adoption Officer on 01159985063 after 6pm. This number must not be used for any other enquiry type or emergency – or email this volunteer at admin@aaru.org.uk, who will reply as soon as possible. The charity recommends its cats stay indoors for 6-8 weeks for bonding time plus are kept in at night. All potential adoptions need successful homechecks, with no rehoming on or near busy roads except for indoor cats. Entirely reliant on volunteers and donations, the charity urgently needs FIV cat, plus larger breed and male dog, fosterers. It does not cover healthy strays/unwanted pets, but neglected, injured or vulnerable animals and birds needing veterinary help. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should leave a detailed message on 0115-9321555. For full details, including Ginny’s and Chester’s pictures, visit www.animalaccident.org.uk.

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team.....

New Text Messaging Service People living and working in three rural areas of Nottinghamshire can now receive news, information and appeals from their local police team straight to their mobile phone, thanks to a new text messaging pilot launched this month.

Nottinghamshire Police to share information with thousands of local people at the click of a button, bringing officers closer to the communities they serve and improving how they let local people know about the work being done to tackle rural crime in their area.”

Anyone living in the Bassetlaw, Newark and Sherwood areas can register to receive free text message alerts from officers about issues affecting their area, including information about recent incidents and advice to help them avoid becoming victims of crime.

The pilot will be run using the Neighbourhood Alert community messaging system which Nottinghamshire Police already use to share information via email with tens of thousands of residents and businesses across Nottinghamshire.

Nottinghamshire Police have launched the pilot thanks to funding provided by the Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Paddy Tipping. Mr Tipping said: “Many people living and working in rural areas struggle to receive information from their local police in a timely enough way to be able to protect themselves as they are so heavily reliant on unstable mobile internet connections to access information online, through social media and by email. “This new service
