SPICE Girl and stage sensation Melanie C is inviting wannabe specs wearing superstars in Nottinghamshire to compete for the Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2013 title and a holiday to St Lucia. Melanie has teamed up with Specsavers and anti-bullying charity Kidscape to bring specs wearers into focus at the Oscars of the glasses world. Janet Archer, store director at Specsavers in Hucknall, says: ‘We see so many people in the store who look absolutely amazing in their glasses. The Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition gives us the opportunity to prove that glasses are fabulous at any age by celebrating the specs wearers right on our doorstep who wear them with pride and plenty of style.’ To be in with a chance of meeting Melanie and scooping the biggest accolade in the specs-wearing world, male and female specs wearers can enter the competition online, www.specsavers.co.uk/loveglasses, via Facebook, www.facebook.com/specsavers, or at their nearest Specsavers store. There are four age categories – 16-24; 25-39; 40-59 and 60+, plus a Facebook favourite voted for by the public. A winner from each category will win a VIP makeover and will attend the grand final in London, where the overall Spectacle Wearer of the Year will be announced.

Guided Walks Are Here Again
The 2013 edition of the Notts Guided Walks Programme is now being distributed round Nottinghamshire’s libraries, visitor centres, parks etc. It contains 159 short and medium guided walks, led by experienced ramblers and compiled from the programmes of the County’s leading walking clubs and organisations. This total includes many fascinating wildlife walks at Attenborough, the Idle Valley Nature Reserve, Wilwell and other well-loved sites. For those new to walking or trying to regain their health, the programme also contains even more short ‘health walks’ with contact telephone numbers for 13 centres around the County. The A5 booklet is free, as are most of the walks. If you cannot obtain one (and cash limits the number printed), you can find all the information on the partnership’s web-site at www. nottsguidedwalks.co.uk Get fit, get slim and enjoy our countryside!

Nottingham Centre (National Trust)
Spring/Summer Update
Spring is sprung (at last) – time to get out and about with National Trust Nottingham Centre, a friendly organisation which offers a variety of activities. The winter programme ended on April 25th with a talk by Stuart Bramwell, an indomitable climber, on the mountains of the UK and Europe. His story of our mountain heritage was accompanied by some beautiful and dramatic photographs. Talks will start again in September. The summer months are packed with other activities – excursions to places as far afield as Sandringham and Beverley, Yorkshire, a selection of walks, and holidays in Kent and London. The Local and Family History Group offers its own extensive programme to such places as Nottingham Park Estate, and the 14th century Grantham House (a National Trust property). Some trips are shared with the Garden Interest Group, such as the visit to the St.Ann’s Allotments. The Gardeners are also off to the RHS Gardens at Harlow Carr, near Harrogate, one of the highlights of their summer programme. As an organisation affiliated to National Trust, the Nottingham Centre gives money annually towards amenities at Trust properties and the acquisition of new ones. Members were delighted to learn recently that the Trust has acquired Stoneywell, an Arts and Crafts style house near Bradgate Park in Leicestershire, and hope to visit it soon. To join the Nottingham Centre the fee is currently £5 and £4 for additional family members, but you must be a member of National Trust. For more information contact the membership secretary Mrs. Heather Brooks, tel. 0115 9436272, email:heatherbro@aol.com or the Nottingham Centre website:www.nottinghamnt.co.uk

Rumbletums Cafe Signs Up To The UK Wide Coffee Packaging Recycling Scheme People of Kimberley and Broxtowe Borough are encouraged to support this new initiative by taking their coffee packaging waste to the Coffee Packaging Brigade Collection Box at Rumbletums Café to reduce the impact on local landfill and raise funds for Rumbletums Kimberley is one of the first locations to join a brand new nationwide recycling scheme set up by Kenco and TerraCycle called the Coffee Packaging Brigade, which aims to save coffee packaging waste from landfill. A collection box for local people to drop off all brands of coffee packaging waste to, is now situated at Rumbletums Café on Victoria Street in Kimberley, with all funds being raised going to Rumbletums Ltd, for each piece of coffee packaging waste collected by the local community. These funds will be used to fund their work with young people with learning disabilities.
Cresswell Crags is hosting a colourful exhibition by a local artist inspired by the archeology of Cresswell Crags.
The aim is to enable local communities such as those in and around Kimberley to come together to save as much coffee packaging waste from local landfill to be recycled, whilst raising money for good causes. The coffee packaging waste will be recycled into generic plastic products such as park benches, watering cans and waste bins.
The exhibition is open until September. Cresswell Crags Visitor Centre Crags Rd, Welbeck, Worksop, S80 3LH FREE admission All works are for sale www.justinenettleton.com
Local people are now able to drop their waste coffee refill bags, coffee bean bags, single serving coffee sachets and coffee jar lids of any brand off to the collection box between the hours of 10am to 3pm Tuesday to Saturday.

The Trouble With Antiques by Gloria Morgan Even if we never set foot in an auction house, or go on-line to bid on e-bay, most of us will have seen at least one edition of a show on TV featuring antiques. The subject is enormously popular, as both viewing figures and the huge turn-out of people seen live at these events will testify.
How old, is a moot point. The terminology is a mine-field. In this country, traditionally, to qualify as an antique, an object has to be at least a hundred years old. In North America the definition is much looser. There, practically any piece of bric-a-brac, which we might consider fodder for a jumble sale, is called an antique. ‘Vintage’ denoting something 40 or 50 years old but still in relatively good condition, generally applies to clothing. Talk about cars, and you’ll need to use the word ‘classic’. Things recently produced, but harking back to an earlier era, get the label ‘retro’.
I don’t know if I’d be willing to lug an old wardrobe that belonged to my great grandad half way across England to a stately home, clutch it in my arms as I shuffle forward in a line trailing half way round the grounds, on a boiling hot day, for two minutes with an expert, probably off-camera. Except – except, that I would be given a professional valuation of my family heirloom. For the first time, I would know what it was worth. And I could dream. Until the moment when the expert turned my wardrobe upside down to find the watermark stamped on the bottom, screwed up his eyes, drew in his breath through his teeth, and uttered the words I had come all this way to hear – I could dream that my life could be transformed to technicolour magnificence if I sold my priceless antique.
‘Collectables’ is a catch-all term that might imply old stuff, but can be the very latest, hot off the press, plastic knick-knacks, if you happen to like them and want a lot of them. The important thing is that people enjoy searching out, haggling for and possessing something that links them with a community of people who share their interest. Very often, the things they collect will be from time gone by. The trouble for me, these days, is that objects a lot of people look at and yearn for because they bear the lustre of the years and speak to them of a by-gone age, are things I can remember going out shopping for and still have in daily use because I haven’t got round to replacing them yet!

Let’s face it, it’s the expression on people’s faces that make these shows irresistible – when they’re told their hideous teapot is worth more than the GDP of a small nation, or someone bids telephone numbers for their cast iron coalscuttle shaped like a hedgehog. Some people, of course, are true collectors. They value the items for what they are – they love the wood and the glaze and the working parts; they appreciate every brush stroke and bezel. They are steeped in knowledge about old things.

FREE PAINT SCHEME
Nottinghamshire County Council run a Community RePaint scheme at Beeston, Calverton, Newark and Warsop Recycling Centres. Public donations of paint accepted at these sites are checked by the site staff and any tins that contain good quality reusable paint are put aside in a designated shelved paint cabin. This reusable paint is then given away free of charge, throughout the year, to community and voluntary groups registered on the scheme. The paint cabins are filling up well with reusable paint so we’re inviting groups to apply so that they can get their hands on some free paint. Over 100 groups have received around 12,000 litres of reusable paint so far but we’re always keen to help even more. For more information go to: h t t p : / / w w w . n o t t i n g h a m s h i r e . g o v. uk/living/waste/recyclingadvice/ communityrepaint/ We’re also opening these schemes to Nottinghamshire residents but this is only at special open evenings. MUSICAL roundup The Grand Central chorus... An invitation to sing with us
It is still busy, busy, busy for the Chorus. After the sell out show at Loughborough in April, and the national convention in Bournemouth at the beginning of May. As current champions they did not compete, but opened and closed the competition and featured in shows on Saturday and Sunday. In July there is the international competition in Toronto. On Saturday the 8th June, there is another show at the Long Eaton Silver Prize Band Hall, Salisbury Street, NG10 1BA. It will feature the Chorus and two quartets, one of whom “Homespun” won a bronze medal at the recent convention and EMUS, the Erewash Musical Society Youth Group plus one other act to be announced. This is the last performance before the adventure in Toronto. Doors open at 7pm. Tickets are £5 available from Bryan on 0115 946 3803. Sponsorship is still being sought from East Midland businesses. There are three levels, Gold (£1000) Silver (£500) and Bronze (250), Nelson on 07967091202 is the man to call if interested or e-mail as below. If you would like the Chorus to entertain you then contact Peter on 01530 243822 or e-mail as below. Any number of singers can be provided from four to forty. Fees are negotiable. Quality is guaranteed. See the website www.grandcentralchorus.com for up to date information. The e-mail address is publicity.gcc@gmail.com. It is a great opportunity to meet new people and explore your singing ability. Rehearsals are every Wednesday at Brinsley Parish Hall from 6:45pm – 7:45pm. Fascinated as a child by magic it was inevitable that Martin Shaw would eventually entertain others with sleight of hand tricks. Martin ran a disco in 1992 with a great collection of music. This opened up a whole new world to him. Working full time as a fork-lift-truck-driver by day, during his free time he started to develop his skills as an entertainer. Martin would combine these skills with his DJ work providing an all round floorshow for the audience. Fire eating is a speciality and on stilts he stands nearly 10 feet tall! With juggling, balloon modelling, face-painting and circus tricks on a unicycle, Martin is an all round entertainer, going down especially well with children. Martin is an unpaid volunteer for schools, using his juggling skills to help under priviledged children with hand-eye coordination that in turn encourages greater use of both sides of the brain. Most week-ends Martin is busy with corporate events, theme parks and children’s parties. He also helps the children’s charity Wish Upon a Star. One day Martin hopes to turn entertaining into a full-time occupation. For more information Martin Shaw can be contacted on 07951 596615.

THREE WAYS WITH CHICKEN
Quite often I buy a whole chicken which can easily provide my family with three delicious meals and plenty of stock for freezing and making into soups and stews. These recipes are equally delicious with left over roast chicken, however I find poaching the bird keeps the meat moist. For a 2kg chicken (£7.40 from Beechdale Butchers)- place it in a large saucepan and add 1 carrot, 1 onion (halved), 10 peppercorns and 2 bay leaves. Cover with water, bring the lidded pan to the boil and simmer for about 1hr 30 mins. Remove the chicken and cool. Drain the cooking liquid. This is great stock and can be frozen in plastic soup containers. Then get all the meat off the bones and divide up for the recipes.
