Review: y b a b y r C n Devilma s Not For Kid In celebration of Go Nagai’s 50 years of groundbreaking and influential work in the manga industry, Netflix has released a new incarnation of his long running series, Devilman, with Devilman Crybaby. Since its release on January 5th, the anime (Japanese style animation) has gained a huge fan base and a mostly positive critical response. So let’s see what all the fuss is about. Devilman Crybaby follows the story of Akira Fudo, an awkward, shy kid who is so sensitive he cries whenever someone is in emotional anguish. When his childhood friend, Ryo Asuka drops back into his life and informs him that demons are real and among us, that is only the beginning of Akira’s twisted descent into the demonic underground of Japan. When at a demon-summoning rave, Akira is possessed by a demon himself, but remains in control. Now with the heart of a human and the body of a demon and the powers that come with it, Akira is humanities last hope of not becoming consumed by the devilish beings. It is shockingly apparent from Devilman Crybaby’s first neon splattered episode that this anime is insane in every single way. From the experimental art style to the thumping techno soundtrack and explicit, with a capital X, content; Devilman Crybaby is unique and unforgettable. The pacing is set at break-neck speed which can sometimes have a negative effect, leaving you slightly confused at why your favourite character is acting in a contradictory way from scene to scene. Racing forward at 100 miles per hour, 100% of the time can also rob events of the necessary context. A few of the early plot lines are either skimmed over or rushed in a way that leaves them feeling slightly useless, no matter how cool and incredibly animated they were. However when the pacing hits just right, Devilman Crybaby is an absorbing anime and in its closing episodes the show becomes a deeply emotional ride that may leave you with an empty tissue box. Akira’s deep sensitivity and doe-eyed hopeful perspective on the world is an admirable one, and this beaming ray of light in a twisted and debaucherous world is one you can’t
help but gravitate to. His crush, Miki Makimura, is similarly hopeful and represents the best of what humanity can be. Having such pure characters juxtaposed against other more monstrous ones in this honestly screwed up world is one of the show’s most interesting aspects and makes the character’s struggles that much more compelling. Exploring human weakness is one of the shows main themes. You are left contemplating the many philosophical questions the show raises for days to come. Especially when you are finally hit by Devilman Crybaby’s emotionally exhausting and strangely beautiful final scene. This may be the perfect end to an anime of this kind. Devilman Crybaby is a phenomenal, highly stylised anime you won’t forget for a long time. It will captivate you from explosive start to devastating finish. Devilman Crybaby = 9/10 © Sam Burton (aged 20)

Holiday survival guide It’s getting to that time of year when you’re considering taking a holiday. Possibly abroad. Maybe even with your children. If this is the first time you’ve taken them with you overseas then you’ll need to read this survival guide, full of handy hints from someone who’s been there, done that, and got the overpriced t-shirt. DISCLAIMER: Just to be clear, this isn’t your holiday. Forget any ideas about having some ‘you time’. You will not get to relax. You will not get romantic moonlit walks. Those days are well and truly over. STARTING: If you’re going on holiday by plane the kids will be either delighted or terrified. We had one thinking he was going on a space rocket and another who didn’t want to be crammed onto an exploding canister filled with rocket fuel and warm bodies. FLYING: The aeroplane is exciting for the first ten minutes. Once you’re through the clouds, you have 2 hours to kill and you’ll have left the felt tip pens in the other bag. The one in the hold. The one you can’t get to. The one your child desperately needs. Right now. And you brought a book to read on the flight, you fool! LIVING: Next up is the apartment. Also known as a cramped box with some internal walls. You get what you pay for and in this instance you paid for a bedroom with no hanging space, a bathroom door that doesn’t close, and a kitchen that encourages you to eat in local restaurants. BEACHING: You’ve got the water, sunscreen and hats to match your optimism. But have you checked out the beaches in advance? There’s little more awkward than finding a beautiful beach and wandering down the coast only to find yourselves amongst a nudist colony for elderly couples. It’s amazing how much you can distract your kids from what’s right in front of them when you really need to. EATING: At some point you’ll have to eat out on the holiday. Let’s be clear, you are “that family”. The one that constantly utters the threat of “there’ll be no dessert” through gritted teeth, the one with the kids that don’t stop talking.
Ever. They seem to think they’ll eat out every night but you have a budget. That budget is about as solid as the promises the banks made before the economy went pear shaped. You may want to keep it tight but ice cream, meals, postcards, souvenirs, parking, and the mafiosi who run the resorts supermarkets all conspire to ensure this is the most expensive holiday you’ve ever been on. And beach toys. Because suddenly your kids want to play frisbee, cricket, rounders, tennis, football, volleyball, kabaddi and anything else that happens on sand. You’ll have a great time, but they will run you ragged. One child will be hyper, whilst the other is angelic. You’ll eventually solve the puzzle of why Child A is nuts and as soon as that’s solved Child B will start acting up. And on it goes. At holidays end your negotiation skills will be so honed that you could single-handedly solve the Syrian crisis. SLEEPING: You put the first night down to excitement. They go to bed late looking like extras from The Walking Dead. Day 2, they keep wandering into the living room with excuses as to why they can’t sleep (“I’m not tired”). Day 3, you realise their goal: to ensure you and your partner can’t have any time together. And before you know it, you’ve surrendered your double bed so the kids can snuggle with mum and you’re left sleeping in a child’s single bed alone. HOMING: And suddenly it’s over. You’re on the plane home and back to reality. Later you’ll pick up a shoe and the sand will pour onto the floor. You’ll use it as an excuse to look at the photos and you’re already planning next year.
Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

Five Hundred Words by Gloria Morgan “I always work best to a deadline. It concentrates my mind. Just makes me get the job done.”
So some people say. Oh, how I wish I was such a one! A deadline does nothing for me but make me more and more lethargic. A deadline saps my energy, undermines my confidence in my ability to write, puts me into a bad mood and sends my procrastination into over-drive. I understand all the reasons why it’s helpful to editors and people to have a deadline. I always appreciate their telling me exactly when it is. I just don’t like the effect it has on me as it draws inexorably nearer and nearer. Never a great one for tidying up and filing, I find myself compulsively scrutinising every scrap of paper on my over-crowded desk and feeling a great urge to put them all away neatly so I will find them again, without fail, if ever I should have the need to do so. Happy for most of the time to write with stubs of pencil or an almost exhausted ball point, a deadline can send me into paroxysms with the pencil sharpener, and get me sorting out all my pens. I cannot bear a black pen to be among the blue ones. All must be neat, tidy, precise and ready for use. I presently have 685 saved e-mails in my in-box. That is, 685 unsorted e-mails, all crying out to be re-read, categorised and stored away under separate headings, ready for quick and efficient retrieval. It is impossible for me see the dawn of deadline day without those e-mails all tucked up in their little electronic boxes where I can
locate them at the flourish of a mouse. It isn’t that a deadline is a threat. That’s not how I feel about it. It is more like an invitation to expand the remaining time available by filling it with as many different activities as possible. Each choice of time-consuming pursuit might be exactly the one I need to feed my imagination and steer me towards a golden outpouring of beautiful words, perfectly formed and honed into the piece of writing I am committed to delivering as the witching hour strikes. So, in a way, a deadline is a liberation for me. It enables me to settle back, put my thoughts in order, focus my ideas, get my ducks in a row. It has a wonderfully calming, pacifying effect like giving my brain a soothing, perfumed, pink bubblebath. It’s a state of mind to relax into. I’m like an athlete preparing for the big occasion, practising deep breathing, going into a state of mindfulness, reviewing all the forthcoming moves, pre-playing the entire scenario in slow motion before launching effortlessly into the event itself. When I feel like that, producing five hundred words of gently flowing prose feels like child’s play. A mere walk in the park. If only, listening to the ticking clock, I could actually think of anything to say!!!

by Helen Jones How many of you have used the word discrimination to describe a workplace behaviour or as a response to something said to you by a friend or colleague? We all think we know what it means and that there may be some redress if it’s encountered at work, but it may be useful to use this article to define what it means in law.
Did you know we also do graphic design, print, web design, corporate video and photography?
Whilst large multinational companies have HR professionals and legal departments to deal with alleged incidents, many smaller organisations do not. And it’s in these environments that certain behaviours can flourish if not dealt with quickly and efficiently.

Discrimination at Work
The legislation also protects you if people in your life, like family members or friends, have a protected characteristic and you’re treated unfairly because of that. If you think that you are a victim of any kind of discrimination at work then you should firstly make your management aware. There is a lot of help and advice available to workers who are not union members. The Citizens Advice Bureau is a good source of information (www.citizensadvice.org.uk) as is ACAS (www.acas.org.uk) 0300 123 1100. Never feel you have to suffer in silence. Please ‘choo-se’ me!
Help Your Local Hedgehogs A cat, who potentially owes his life to a local charity, is hoping someone nice will choose him to adopt. At four years old, Choo had health problems owing to his rough start – but was taken in by Animal Accident Rescue Unit. When found, he had breathing difficulties and even a hernia - but thankfully these conditions were swiftly fixed. Since then he has been enjoying life with his fosterer who says: ‘Choo is so affectionate, and simply adores attention. He’s full of character and great company.’ As with all the charity’s cats, Choo is microchipped, flea and worm treated, littertrained plus vaccinated – his new owner is responsible for further vaccinations. Choo would love to hear from potential adopters. To arrange to meet and for details, contact the Adoption Officer at admin@aaru. org.uk, who will reply as soon as possible. All potential adoptions need a successful homecheck. Cats are not rehomed on or near busy roads, unless indoor-only. With no premises, animals are fostered in volunteers’ homes. The charity does not cover healthy strays/unwanted pets, but helps neglected, injured and vulnerable animals and birds. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should leave a detailed message on 0115-9321555. For all rescued animals needing homes, see www.animalaccident.org.uk.

We are a group of passionate volunteers who want to stop the decline in hedgehog numbers and help save one of our best loved British mammals from extinction. We do talks, landsite visits, help with hedgehog rescue,do schools visits, collect newspapers for our local hedgehog rescue centre, raise money and generally help in whatever ways we can. Contact details at the bottom. Here are a few ways in which you can help your local hedgehog population; • Put out a shallow dish of fresh water. • Feed them meat-based dog/cat food. They love unsalted chopped or crushed peanuts, sunflower hearts and dried meal worms. Never give them bread and milk as they can’t digest it. • No single garden is large enough - they need to be linked. A 13cm hole at the base will allow Hogs easy access not only to your garden but also to your neighbours. • Hogs make nests from large deciduous leaves like oak or cherry. Pile up some logs in the corner of your garden – then add fallen leaves. • You can buy or make a Hogitat in your garden for them to use. • Check any piles of wood or garden refuse before burning. • Always provide an exit ramp from garden ponds. • Check your garden before using any garden machinery. • Avoid using pesticides. We visited the restaurant on a Sunday afternoon and were greeted at the door by the friendly and authentically dressed staff. The restaurant itself is traditionally Indian, decorated with vibrant colours and fabulously colourful pictures. It boasts beautiful lakeside views making you feel miles away from everything. To start we shared 3 starters, Onion Bhaji (£7.95), Tandoori Paneer Kebab (£7.95) and the delicately spiced Malai Tikka (£8.95) which were presented beautifully and all absolutely delicious. For mains the kids had a Veggie Korma (£10.95) and a Chicken Korma (£13.95), and we shared a Shahi Chicken (£13.95) served in a blend of herbs, cashew nuts and cream & a Desi Lamb (£16.95) lean lamb off the bone cooked in a rich spicy sauce. Both dishes were amazing with the lamb definitely melting in the mouth, and all the kids loved the kormas. We shared a selection of naan breads and pilau rice all cooked to perfection. A palette cleanser of mango sorbet was served between courses and the hot towels were a wonder to behold! I’m not going to spoil it but they need to be seen to be believed! We only just managed to squeeze in three puddings between us, we chose the Crepes Suzette £7.95 which were cooked right there at our table, flames and all! Pistachio Kulfi £4.95 served in a spun sugar basket and Gulab Jamun, which is an Indian sweet dough ball, £4.95. Overall a truly magical journey, with delicious food, a live pianist and wonderful surprises along the way. If you are looking for something extra special then Mewar Haveli is the place to go. We will definitely be returning and the sooner the better.

MORE CHEESE PLEASE I
am an unashamed cheese lover. There is not much in the great global canon of cheese that I have tried that I don’t like. I can even be tempted to a gloop of the notoriously strong Stinking Bishop if the mood takes me. Cheese has a fascinating history, although no one is entirely sure who made the first cheese, it is believed that the process dates back more than 5000 years. Its manufacture is even depicted in the murals of ancient Egyptian tombs. Some believe it was discovered accidently when an Arabian merchant put his supply of milk into a sheep’s stomach pouch as he set out on his journey. The hot sun and the rennet in the stomach lining caused the milk to separate into curds and whey. Today there are a myriad of cheeses, eaten almost everywhere in the world in one form
or another. In Nottinghamshire we have the “king” amongst cheeses in our local Stilton and have recently re-discovered our love of the traditional soft “Colwick Cheese”. I can’t think there is ever a day when there isn’t a good mature Cheddar in my fridge, but I am easily tempted and more often than not there will be at least half a dozen pieces of cheese, of varying vintage, nestled at the back somewhere. A quick perusal today reveals, Cheddar, Emmental, Parmesan, Haloumi, Edam, Stichelton, Cambozola and Roquefort, as well as several cream cheeses. As I am probably not alone in this, I thought it might be useful to share some really, really easy recipes for using up your left-over cheeses (of course you can always just mix it all together and grill it on toast, if that works for you!).

Easy Peasy Cheese Straws
Unctuous Baked Cheese with Garlic and Herbs
Peach and Blue Cheese Salad
Ingredients (serves 8)
Ingredients (serves 4 as a starter)
Ingredients (serves 4)
350g pack ready-rolled puff pastry 4 large handfuls of strong hard cheese, grated (Parmesan, Emmental, Cheddar, Gruyere all work well) A little plain flour
1 soft cheese with a rind such as camembert or brie, in a box Handful of chopped herbs (chives, thyme, flat-leafed parsley) 1 garlic clove, finely sliced.
½ Ciabatta loaf, sliced 1 bag mixed salad leaves Handful of mint leaves, torn 4 peaches cut into 8 pieces 140g blue cheese of your choice (brie also works) 100g sugar snap peas, sliced lengthways For the dressing: 1tsp clear honey Squeeze lemon juice 2tbsp olive oil
Method Heat the oven to 220°C Unroll the puff pastry and scatter over the handfuls of cheese, fold in half, seal the open edges. Lightly flour a surface and then roll out your pastry until it is around the thickness of a pound coin. Cut into 1cm strips and twist 3 times. Lay on a non-stick baking sheet, scatter over some more cheese and then bake for up to 12 mins or until golden brown.
Method Heat the oven to 220°C. Take the cheese out of its box and remove all packaging. Pierce the top of the cheese with a sharp knife and insert pieces of garlic, then place the cheese back in the box. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 15mins. Take it out of the oven and remove the lid. Cut a large cross through the top of the cheese and peel back the rind. Scatter over the herbs, and perhaps a grind of black pepper. Serve with crusty bread.
Method Toast the slices of ciabatta and drizzle with 1tbs olive oil. Make the dressing by whisking the remaining oil, honey and lemon juice, season to taste. Place all the other ingredients in a large bowl and toss with the dressing before serving.

The Fifty Something Tale
Re-wind to my 30th birthday. No kids, good job, partying every weekend. Life was a breeze. Then a decade later with two kids and a grown-up house I still felt OK. “life begins at forty”, “fabulous at forty”, and other positive messages abound in my cards. However, approaching the big Five-O there was radio silence...Three years in and I now know why!!!
“You
know you‛re getting old when you look at Scholl sandals and think “my they look comfy”!
”
Victoria Wood
The fifties is a secret club. The first rule of the fifties club is you don’t talk about the fifties. The second rule of the fifties club is you DO NOT talk about the fifties. I have decided to break these rules and share with you some of my tales of getting old.
My moment of clarity occurred at work the other day. Popping to the loo I suddenly felt unreasonably angry and annoyed that I had jeans on - I had to tackle a belt, buttons and a zip, it was all too much for an old gal! Sadly I had to acknowledge that I had passed over to the dark side that is elasticated waistbands. The jegging has become my garment of choice. They hold things in, allow expansion and are easy to get on and off. What’s not to like??? After this depressing realisation, I had to face the fact that things would never be the same again. I began to log incidences of my strange behaviour and then had to stop as it was becoming worryingly regular.
Here are a few of my recent ones. It helps to prefix with “You (meaning me!) know you are getting old when...” ..you put the yogurt in the cupboard rather than the fridge and scarily cannot even recall doing so.
“
Maybe it‛s true that life begins at fifty. But everything else starts to wear out, fall out or spread out. Phyllis Diller
”
..you add screenwash to the washing machine instead of fabric conditioner (sorry boys). ...you get in the shower but forget to take your glasses off. (Screenwash would have been handy in there!!). ...you can’t get off the sofa without making a strange grunting, moaning sound. Men don’t have it any easier either. My other half now has more hair on his back than on his head and is currently pondering the viability of the world’s longest comb-over. Or more like a comb-up-and-over!! However there are advantages to getting older. You qualify for Saga holidays. You no longer care about what anyone else thinks (I refer you back to the jeggings). Saying “no” becomes easier. You can use your kids as a taxi service instead of the other way round. Am I convincing you? No? Me neither!!! © Ali Wale

The weather has finally improved and Greasley Miners Welfare Bowls Club looks forward to a new outdoor season. A nice warm summer would help to improve the fortunes of lawn green Bowls. Sadly we have lost two of our number during the close season but we remain optimistic for the new campaign. The club has a full fixture card including league, cup and friendly matches. We open our account against star of Bestwood early May. Although we have attracted three new members this year, enrolment remains a major issue. Living in the Eastwood area with a population of around ten thousand really should generate enough support. Bowls is not an expensive game with a five month season ticket costing between £39 to £64. How much does a sports channel cost monthly? We have an excellent green and Pavilion on Coronation Park open daily between 11am to 7pm. Among the general public, bowls is regarded as an old people’s game. Actually a degree of fitness is necessary, with each game a distance of around seven hundred yards is covered and bowling a 1 kg wood maintains the body’s muscular strength. Special introductory rate for beginners accompanied by a club player and coaching sessions are available. Why not have a go? All you need to start are flat shoes. Contact our secretary on 01773 716076 or visit our website c/o Hugo Fox.

Tanya About Town S
ummer is now well and truly upon us and so we cross our fingers with the weather as we welcome festival season. Lakeside’s International Children’s Theatre and Dance Festival, Wheee! has become a key event in the regional arts calendar for children and families. Set in the beautiful surroundings of Highfield Park there will be a host of performances by international companies: 28 May - 3 June. There’s more family entertainment on the way at Arnold Carnival (16-17 June). Big stage entertainment comes from local and professional entertainers. Favourites also include a fun dog show, children’s fun fair, craft marquees and food. Whilst we’re on the subject of food, prepare to make the most divine ice creams you’ve ever tasted at The School of Artisan Food (21 June/24 July). During this practical one-day course you will try your hand at making eight different types of vanilla ice cream. Prefer someone to cook for you? Craig Floate returns to Debbie Bryan after multiple sellout Supper Clubs to host an unforgettable evening on 15 June. This pop-up dining experience has a fresh, seasonal menu, and is never one to miss due to its high demand. Love music? Don’t miss the Forest Live season as Sherwood Pines welcomes Paul Heaton & Jacqui Adams (8 June), Gary Barlow (23 June) and UB40 (24 June). Nottingham’s biggest music festival, Splendour, returns for its tenth year at Wollaton Park (21 July). An epic line up of legends include
The Charlatans, Paloma Faith and The Stranglers. Not to be outdone, Southwell plays host to a perfect blend of rising stars, festival favourites and music legends at The Gate to Southwell Festival (7-10 June) and Newark Festival is back for its seventh year, headlined by Marti Pellow, along with Kim Wilde, Go West, Nick Heyward and Limahl. Outdoor entertainment continues in the form of theatre. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland will bring song and dance to Wollaton Park (8 July). Bring a picnic and enjoy a night of magical theatre under the stars at Newstead Abbey with Sense & Sensibility (15 July) Enjoy more of the great outdoors by joining the Sherwood Forest Trust for a special weekend celebrating the life and history of the great British Woodland, as they hold the annual Major Oak Woodland Festival in the heart of Sherwood Forest (9-10 June) or join the Nottingham Booklovers Walk (3 June/1 July) approx 1 mile in distance, it will showcase the city and celebrate the many writers, poets and published authors associated with Nottingham. Finally, see the city in a different light. Sunrise City is a 5k run or walk that takes place at 5.30am. The route takes you past famous landmarks, including Nottingham Castle and Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem before a picturesque return along the Notts-Beeston Canal (6 July).

he Lost City Adventure Golf, based in the heart of Nottingham at The Cornerhouse, houses two separate 18 hole, rainforest themed, indoor adventure golf courses - Sacred Skull Pass and Temple Trail! Perfect for budding adventurers aged from 3 to 103, The Lost City is fantastic fun and suitable for everyone – whether you’re looking for an activity to do with the family, fancy an adventure with your friends, plan on bringing that date you’re trying to impress or want to beat the boss with your colleagues on a work night out, The Lost City is the perfect venue. Whatever the weather, The Lost City is open all year round, 7 days a week from 10:30am to 11:00pm on weekdays, 10.00am to 11.00pm on Saturdays and 10.00am to 10.00pm on Sundays. It has quickly become a hugely popular Nottingham destination for families, students, children’s birthday parties and corporate events and unless your group size is 10 or more, you can simply come down and play – there’s no need to book! Both of our courses have been designed to be wheelchair user and pushchair friendly so all adventurers can play! ‘We took the kids on a wet and windy afternoon in spring, in fact some of the kids are actually teenagers (ages 7, 9, 17 & 19). We walked into what looked like a film set from Indiana Jones with stone temples, wooden bridges and
hanging vines looping from tree to tree, it is truly magical. Some really helpful staff greeted us and set us on our golfing adventure. We were given the Sacred Skull Pass course and kitted out with clubs to fit our heights and different coloured balls – very handy when there are 6 of you. The course was set with differing degrees of difficulty; some holes are straightforward while others are quite tricky. The weather changes in the jungle too with rain and lightning projections being cast around the course, but don’t worry you don’t get wet! We all had a thoroughly great time and enjoyed a drink in the jungle themed Tiki cocktail bar afterwards too. The kids are already planning when we will be back to try the Temple Trail’ by Cat Hedges

Thinking about dieting? ...read this first
Don’tCalories settle a diet plan, are more for of a measure for processed foods. upg Ditch the processed stuff and you won’t need to count calories. health instead
“Diet starts on Monday" is a phrase I have repeated to myself many times, because, well we all need that last blow out before things get seriously healthy. Except that the diet never really starts.
At times I’d make it through Monday or maybe even Tuesday with a calorie restricted meal consisting of mainly lettuce and other similarly non-satiating ingredients, only to find myself “accidentally” eating an entire pack of biscuits in some raging hunger fuelled act of retaliation. With that indulgence, the diet would be ruined and I’d have to wait for another Monday to get seriously healthy again. If this pattern Don’t sounds familiar, don’t despair, we’ve all been there, in fact the majority of diets fail. Mostly, we aim to eat too little, count calories or simply lack the right support to correctly reinforce positive habits. So what’s the solution?
Besides, what you get out of the food i.e. the nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals are far more important.
SUPPORT Like with anything new, it helps a great deal if you aren’t alone in the process. Let’s face it, trying to make better food choices when constantly exposed to “bad” foods is hard enough, let alone doing this without a pat on the back. These days you only have to mention the word all of a sudden everyone questions expect a diet dietand plan your motives. It is advantageous if friends and family are supportive, but the best way to stay on track is to Evidence answer to a professional who is less likely to allow you that Sunday night binge. STRUCTURE Probably the most important aspect of any weight loss plan is structure. Think about it this way: you are hungry, have had a busy day and you have no idea what to have for dinner, then carbs accidentally jump into your mouth! “Something healthy” is rarely tangible whilst ravenously hungry, which is whyWhat a well structured eating plan that gives you concrete priorities is a must for success.
NO MORE CALORIES First things first, calorie counting has a limited use. Don’t believe me? Here is why: A 100g bar of milk chocolate has approximately 600 calories which is exactly the same calorie content that 100g of almonds have. If you eat 100g of almonds, you can’t break down the fibrous nuts so well, so chances are you only actually absorb 1/3 of the calories or The Wholefood Plan is a 30-day eating plan based on circa 200 calories. This pattern is the same for most It’s personal the principles of structure and support without the need unprocessed foods. Eat the chocolate however and you to count calories. PRESS UPS AND PULL UPS
Many of you will be familiar with these exercises. They are some of the primary movements you first learn when starting out in any form of physical activity. Both are highly important in every day life, as we use the majority of these muscle groups for daily tasks… so if you have ever wondered why you see push ups and pull ups in just about every exercise plan or fitness regime it is because these are the staple exercises for the foundation of upper body movements.
The Pull Up The pull up is like the holy grail for most people. It’s hard to achieve and extremely hard to progress with, this is why most of us give up. Not only is it beneficial to be able to perform this exercise for its strength benefits but also for improved posture. Performing too many chest dominated exercises will leave you round shouldered giving you bad posture and often, posture related issues. Between these two exercises alone you are using the majority of the upper body muscle groups. Imagine the time you could save if you became great at these two exercises…
The Press Up
Positioning the Pull Up
Most of us get the positioning of the press up wrong, working more of the shoulders and triceps than the actual chest. This happens when we have our hand placement to high and our elbows turned out too far towards a 90-degree position. Hand Position
Ideally we want our hands placed just outside shoulder width on a bar overhead. The aim of the game here is to:
Hands should be placed just outside of our chest width to start with (basic press up), inline with our chest and not our shoulders.
1. Keep your chest high (forward/diagonally pushed up) 2. Fully extend decompressing your scapular (shoulder blades) 3. Pull from your elbows towards your hips 4. Aim to get your chin above the bar
Elbows should be positioned at a 45-degree angle to ensure chest activation rather than shoulders. Focus on keeping elbows locked into that 45-degree position resisting the temptation to lift and drive from the shoulders. Once you can perform numerous press ups from your toes (use your knees if you struggle to begin with) then you can practise using different set ups to improve your press ups further. Full Pull
Some simple tips to help build strength for pull ups are to use assist bands, stepping in one of these can hugely improve your technique. Use the lat pull down machine to activate your lats so you get use to the feeling of where to pull from within your back.

Earth signs- Capricorn, Virgo, Taurus
(The Empress, Page of Cups, Ten of Coins) You’ll take matters into your own hands and gain recognition. A bold move which you plan and make off your own back will gain the admiration of everyonecue applause! Don’t let anyone get in your way and trust that you’ve got the talent and resilience to pull this one off, all that graft and dedication is going to be worthwhile.
Fire signs- Leo, Aries, Sagittarius
Water signs- Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio
(Eight of Wands, Page of Swords, Four of Swords)
(Six of Cups, Two of Cups, Wheel of Fortune)
Pick your battles.
Your love life is going to perk up.
Life’s going to be busy and hectic this summer, loads of great things going on and much to sink your teeth into... but be careful of not overdoing it. Put time aside to rest, relax and literally do nothing. Your mind, body and spirit needs these ‘time outs’ in order to successfully tackle everything else on your plate.
Someone from your past is set to return to your present, with a bang! It might be an ex, an old friend, an object of affection who you never really got it on with. Second chance saloon this summer! This relationship could be fantastic and rejuvenating for you, but (if you pursue it) then it will rock your world and change everything. Is that what you want?

Finding the Perfect Babysitter Finding a babysitter is one of the most difficult tasks out there.
Whether you’re a new parent searching for your first ever babysitter, or a seasoned parent with four children looking for the next babysitter in a long string of carers, it’s complicated to find the perfect fit.
Taking
the actual step of leaving your child with a babysitter is daunting.
You’ll have all the emergency numbers listed
in full view. You’ll remind the sitter that you’re simply a phone call away if there’s a problem. Did you mention that the youngest needs to be in bed by eight? Does the babysitter remember that the oldest has a peanut allergy? As you walk out the door, you’ll have a frantic few moments. You might even want to change your plans and head right back into the house.
driver’s licence, so last minute bookings will be problematic. They all have their pros and cons, how can you choose?
As obvious as it may sound, meeting with the
potential babysitters first is one of the best ways to find the best carer for you. Use this opportunity to discuss requirements. If you haven’t negotiated this before meeting the sitter, determine in person how much the babysitter will charge you. What is their hourly rate? Will they accept a lower fee if all they need to do is sit on the couch while the child sleeps?
Budgets are important, of course, but they’re
are many ways to find babysitters, especially nowadays with all the online babysitting platforms that help connect parents with local babysitters. The challenging part is finding a carer you can trust and that fits with your family. In order to finally take that daunting first step out of the house and leave your child with a babysitter, you’ll need to find the right one.
not the only thing you should take into account when searching for a babysitter. A good way to figure out if the carer will fit with your family is to have them interact with your children in front of you. Simply bring your children along to the meeting. Don’t outright tell them it’s a test, but do watch them carefully. Do they greet the children or just you, the parents? Do they smile at your children, ask them a few questions, and have an approachable attitude? I once met up with a family at a café, where the parents had brought both their children. I’m not sure it was intentionally supposed to be a test but a couple days later, the family hired me as their babysitter because I was apparently the candidate that connected best with their children (despite having less experience than the other babysitters they met).
So,
Knowing
However, at one point or another, you’re going
to need that babysitter. Perhaps you’re going to get stuck late at work and you’ll need someone available at the last second. Or maybe you’ll want to go out on a well-deserved and relaxed date night.
There
how do you find the “right one”? One babysitter may have many references and lots of experience. Another babysitter might have a less expensive hourly rate than the first, but they also have less experience. That third babysitter is perfect but they live on the other side of town and do not yet have their
that you are leaving your child with someone they’ve met before, that they are friendly and comfortable can truly make that step out the door much easier for you.

AT THE HEART OF YOUR FUNERAL PLANNING When we started providing funeral pre-payment plans more than 20 years ago, the idea of ‘paying for your funeral in advance’ was quite unusual. Today, funeral plans are more well known, and available from a wide variety of sources. However, you wouldn’t buy a will from a DIY superstore, so why buy something so important from someone who knows nothing about funerals, your local area, or you. Buying a plan from Gillotts means you can sit down with one of our staff who know local facilities and talk about what you want your funeral to be like. If you wish, you can go into details: music, flowers, what everyone should wear, which photographs to Eastwood Office

Help a child in Nottinghamshire At Nottinghamshire County Council we are looking for people throughout the county to provide safe and loving foster homes for children and young people. Fostering is such a rewarding experience, making a positive impact on children’s lives and helping them to build their confidence. Foster carers Johnathan and Emma believe that fostering has brought them closer together: “Since we started the process, we have found the whole experience very therapeutic and in many ways it has brought us closer as a couple and as a family.” The couple say that during their training they met “wonderful foster carers who gave sound advice” as well as an insight into day-to-day fostering experiences. We would love to talk to anyone living in Nottinghamshire who may be thinking about fostering and could welcome a child into their home. We can talk you through the application process, the training we will give you and how we’ll support you every step of the way, and if you have any questions, we are here for you. We have a wealth of information about the
allowances and further training opportunities that would be available to you as one of our foster carers. There are several ways that you can find out more about fostering with us, including our website where you can learn about out who can foster, see when there’s an information event near you, watch true story videos and learn about the different types of foster care you could provide. You can sign up to our monthly email for an insight on fostering with regular real life stories from our foster carers. Follow us on Facebook to keep up to date with fostering news or come along to one of our events and have a chat with us or give us a call. Making Sense of Dementia
This specialist programme consists of seven, two hour weekly sessions at venues throughout Nottingham and covers a different aspect of dementia in each session. The groups are facilitated by specialists in dementia group work and will give carers a chance to learn more about the illness, the services that are available and gain support from other carers. Help with respite services and transport may be available. We hope that by reaching out to carers who are coping with managing their own lives as well as caring for someone with this very debilitating disease there will be an opportunity to gain a better understanding of dementia by
understanding the changes in communication and behaviours, learning how to look after themselves as well as those they care for, understanding nutrition, infection control, treatable dementias and manage continence care. We also have information on other services, respite care, carer’s assessments and we discuss the legal implications of caring for someone with dementia, look at the Mental Capacity Act and what it means as well as welfare benefits. All this will hopefully improve the quality of life of both the carer and the cared for by increasing carer’s knowledge of dementia and improving coping skills, confidence and morale. The sessions also aim to reduce the sense of isolation. The programme is free to those that live in the Nottingham City and the County, all we ask is for a small contribution for refreshments. For more information or to book a place on one of our programmes please ring Bev Pearson on 0115 978 6133 or 07745 956880

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team..... The hot weather is finally on the way (hopefully). We can pack away the woolly cardigans, cosy slippers and furry mittens . Bring on those long summer days (weather permitting!). Our key message is to have fun and enjoy your time off, but please be safe and stay vigilant during the coming summer months. Things to consider in the hot weather: At home... Thieves can get in through open windows, even when you’re in the house. If you are indoors, use fanlight windows for ventilation and lock the lower windows. If you do not have these, use lockable window restrictors. When you go out, always close and lock external doors and windows, even if you are just going out for a short time. Window locks can be seen from outside and could deter a burglar from forcing the window. If you have deadlocks, use them. They make it more difficult for a thief to get out again. Never leave the key near the door or in an obvious place nearby. If you have a flat roof extension, the windows above it should always be locked.
sounding after 20 minutes and lights don’t disturb your neighbours. Out and about... Lakes and rivers can look inviting on a hot day but beware of possible dangers beneath, like jagged rocks, broken bottles and strong currents. Pets... Please don’t leave dogs in vehicles – even for a few minutes – as temperatures inside can rise rapidly, making dogs very distressed. It can even prove to be fatal. When the weather is warm, owners should always ensure that their pets have plenty of cool, fresh drinking water. Vehicles... Unlocked doors and open windows on vehicles are invitations to criminals, so secure it even if you are only popping into a shop, paying for petrol or getting a car park ticket. Don’t forget to lock the boot and sun roof too. Be a good neighbour - if you see anyone acting suspiciously in your neighbourhood, call the police on 101 or, in an emergency, 999. For more advice and crime prevention information please visit our website http://www. nottinghamshire.police.uk/advice
Never leave garages or sheds unlocked, especially if they connect to your property. Visible burglar alarms and carefully directed security lighting can deter burglars. Make sure alarms stop
