Welcome to the Autumn edition. We received hundreds of reader questionnaires back - so thanks. One thing you all wanted was more money off deals so our Live for Less voucher page was born...see page 45. Annoying as it may be we must mention the festive season...this is the last edition before the Christmas magazine so please get in touch as soon as possible if you have an event that you want to publicise. We are very excited to announce the launch of our sixth magazine! NG14 will be delivered to the villages of Lowdham, Woodborough, Calverton and Burton Joyce. This takes our circulation to 70,000 home and businesses. To get anything in this mag please give us a call. Happy Reading Ali, Cat and Sarah

I really like the idea of a weekly veg box delivery, so when Red Earth Organics offered me a box I jumped at the chance. I have to say I was really impressed with the quality, variety and freshness of the produce. A box like the one pictured is ÂŁ11. I think this is great value. These recipes are all from the goodies I received in the box. Red Earth Organics can be reached on 07794 467545.

The Lazy Gardener.... is turfed out!!
Whether your lawn is the size of a postage stamp or a football pitch, to keep it looking green and gorgeous requires some care and attention. In our house the most the lawn ever gets is a mow every few days during the spring and summer...and it does show.
Compaction and sub-surface thatch are two of the main problems on lawns by restricting water, air and nutrients getting through. Hollow-tine aeration is the most effective way of reducing these problems by removing thousands of cores out of the lawn, allowing the roots to spread enabling them to receive nutrients. Aeration stimulates and encourages root growth and can be done with a garden fork or a special mechanical aerator. Re seed Any worn/bare patches caused by the summer wear can be re-seeded now.
I have since learnt that grass never stops growing it just slows down and we should really keep mowing at least monthly through Autumn and Winter subject to dry conditions.
Leaves Prevent accumulation of fallen leaves by removing them from the lawn weekly otherwise the grass will struggle to survive and diseases may establish themselves.
For some more tips on improving the state of my lawn I contacted our good friends at Green Thumb and Mark Sutton has kindly given me some great tips which I am delighted to share with you.... Autumn is a very important time of the year for lawn maintenance. Scarification This is an essential part of lawn maintenance. We scarify to remove matted growth and thatch both of which are detrimental to a lawn, thinning out the thatch improves the plants growing conditions and it also reduces one of the causes of moss. It can be done with a specialist hand tool or a machine. Aeration Put simply aeration is making holes in the lawn to let carbon dioxide out of the soil and allow oxygen in.
....Blimey, thanks for all those tips Mark. I had no idea there was so much involved. For those of us with very little time (or inclination!) companies like Green Thumb offer a great lawn care service and it really doesn’t cost the earth. For more information on lawn care or to get Mark and his team round to help just give them a call on 0116 243 4606. Š Ali Wale

GEM Connection Ladies Barbershop Chorus kick off summer with a bang!
On the 21 July, GEM ladies packed up their bags and headed up to Calver to take part in a Barbershop singing retreat with Sally McLean, the renowned chorus director of the White Rosettes, multiple time winners of UK barbershop competition. A lot of laughs, tea, singing and frolics were had by all and I would like to thank everyone who made it such a fantastic weekend. GEM also sang at the Derby Beer Festival on 11 July to encouraging crowds, startling them into silence with Bad Romance to begin with, and cheered into an encore after the last song. It was a successful night for all, including the two new recruits who completed their first sing out that night – congratulations!
Café Serving lunch, light snacks, home-made cakes and excellent coffee
Open from 10.00am to 3.00pm Tuesday to Saturday 2a Victoria Street, Kimberley, NG16 2NH (on the corner of Victoria Street and Newdigate Street)

GEM are now preparing for Biddulph music festival on 6 October and of course the UK Barbershop convention in October. The Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS) holds a National Convention annually with many choruses taking part each year. Each chorus is marked on their choice of music, presentation and quality of the singing. GEM Connection have been practising hard and are looking to improve on last year’s scores. The Chorus meets every Thursday from 7:30pm at Harrington Junior School, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4BJ. If you would like to find out more, come along to a rehearsal, become part of the mailing list or book us for an event, please email pro@gemconnection.org or contact Flin Tubby on 07545 316 986. Come along and see how GEM sparkles!

Junior Triathlon Sessions for kids aged 8-14 Following a successful summer of sport Absolute Triathlon Club based at Southglade Leisure Centre in Bestwood are now holding weekly training sessions for children aged 8 – 14 years. The triathlon sessions take place every Thursday evening from 5pm until 7.15 pm and cover swim, bike and run training. All children, including beginners, are welcome to come for a free trial however they must be able to swim a minimum of 100 mtrs without stopping and ride a bike. Head Coach Steve Lloyd commented “Triathlon has seen a surge in popularity over the last few years and took centre stage at the London 2012 Olympics where British brothers Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee took Gold and Bronze respectively. The sport is great for kids as the fun bit is training across the 3 different sports of swimming, biking and running.” The sessions form part of Nottingham’s successful Absolute Triathlon Club launched in 2009 and has subsequently raft of awards including the Nottingham Club of the Year.
hugely which won a Sports
The club will cater for all abilities with three different training squads; Foundation, Development and Performance which will involve beginners to the sport as well as really push those showing talent in the sport. Children can trial for the club during the year that they turn eight, however they need to be able to swim 100 mtrs without stopping and ride a bike. We’ve all gone a little bit Olympic mad over the last month, and that enthusiasm is reflected in the increased number of cyclists and joggers on the roads. Whether you think you could be the next Bradley Wiggins or are simply inspired by our national athletes to get fit, I’d like to remind you all of a few basic guidelines to ensure you stay safe on the roads. If you are on the roads as a pedestrian or a cyclist, make sure you can be seen. In the day or night, wear light, high-visibility, reflective gear and affix lights and reflectors to your bike. Wear protective kit, such as a helmet, run or ride in well-lit areas, and avoid walking or running on roads without pavements. Stay alert and avoid listening to music or using a mobile phone while cycling as distractions can cause accidents. Motorists should be aware of those who share the roads with them. Stick to the speed limit and use extreme caution when travelling on rural roads and around tight bends. Let’s make sure those of us who are hitting the roads in the name of a healthier lifestyle are able to do so safely. Crime in the area continues to fall with incidents of antisocial behaviour still dropping. A police operation dedicated to tackling nuisance behaviour at known hotspots in the
town will also continue in a bid to drive down incidents even further. A number of arrests have been made recently in connection with 21 cars being damaged in Church Street over night on Sunday 2 September. Wing mirrors were smashed and vehicles scratched in the spate of vandalism. Three people were arrested and have now been charged. Officers also recently arrested a man for fuel theft and handling stolen properties after six containers of diesel were found in a garden. I would like to remind residents to ensure their homes, outbuildings and property are left secure. Thieves capitalise on home owners leaving their doors or windows open or unlocked and will think nothing of sneaking inside, even in broad daylight. Also don’t leave keys on display as offenders will think of putting a hole through a window to reach in and unlock the door or snatch car keys. For more crime prevention advice, visit the Nottinghamshire Police website at www.nottinghamshire. police.uk. Remember you can help to set our neighbourhood priorities by taking a moment to fill in our online survey and telling us what you want us to focus on. For more information visit www. neighbourhoodprioritysurvey.co.uk
An Indian Summer by Gloria Morgan I was out in a tee shirt, walking the dog, today. It was beautiful – sunny, warm, not a cloud in the sky. In short, the sort of summer weather we should have had in June. Only a few days before I’d had to reach for the scraper first thing in the morning to clear the car windscreen of frost. So I guess what we’re enjoying now is what they call “an Indian summer”.
In Bulgaria it’s a “gipsy summer”. Elsewhere in eastern Europe – Russia, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary – it is called an “old ladies summer”. Now, I like that. I’m all in favour of old ladies being given the credit for something nice that everybody enjoys. No “Indian summer” in China – they prefer a “tiger autumn” and in Brazil, regardless of what month it comes in, it is known as “little May summer”. Perhaps the most odd and fascinating version is “Pastırma summer” which is the name in Turkey. “Pastirma” is a kind of cured meat. It seems this is the best time of year for doing the curing process. Apparently pastirma is a delicacy which the the Turks like to eat for breakfast with fried eggs, or put on pizza. I’m sure it’s delicious, especially when it’s made out of camel, or goat, or water buffalo. I shall inspect the local deli counter with great care next time I go.
I’ve heard that term used all my life but I’ve never known the signicifance of it. Well, you know me – it was not long before I started wondering: Why not “an African summer” or “a Japanese summer”? And who were these Indians anyway, who gave their name to a late unseasonal spell of fine weather? Do you remember the old Saturday morning “Cowboys and Indians” movies? It seems that in America the season is named after the native “Indians” because apparently it was their favourite time of year for attacking convoys of covered wagons. Now, I think that should make the saying a “Hollywood summer” – but no, the “Indians” get the blame. But not everywhere. In former times in France, Italy, Spain and Portugal, an “Indian summer” was called “Saint Martin’s Summer” because it was supposed to end on the Saint’s day, November 11th, when they celebrated it with bonfires, roasted chestnuts and wine. Now, that sounds like the spirit to me! I wonder why we don’t call it a “Guy Fawkes summer”, but we don’t. The Swedes, living further north, expect it to end earlier. They call it “brittsommar” which links it to “Britt Mass”, an annual open-air market held on October 7th.
It seems there’s also a term for an exceptional cold snap in winter. This was a new one on me, but it’s my favourite expression of all: a “LinseyWoolsey Britches Winter”. (You try saying that after a few warming draughts of ginger wine!) After our own Indian summer this year, let’s just hope we’re not in for a LWBW later on.

A Lifeline for Animals in Need
Animal Accident Rescue Unit is a transport service for sick, injured or vulnerable animals and birds. It provides both transport to a vet surgery, arranging for their treatment and caring for them in foster homes until either their owner can be traced or new homes can be found. The Charity has no central base and is run entirely by volunteers working from their own homes. It has taken in so many cats over the last few months, it desperately needs new fosterers who can provide a temporary home for one of our rescued cats. If you think you can help, please ring the Recruitment Officer on 0115-956 3799 (recruitment calls only).
Volunteer Drivers and Phone Operators Needed!
Local Nottingham-based charity Animal Accident Rescue Unit is seeking volunteer drivers with their own car who have a couple of hours a week to spare during the daytime, evening or weekend. The charity needs help to transport rescued animals to and from vet practices and foster homes. Additionally, reliable people are needed to take calls from the public who require help with animals they find in distress. All roles are based from home. To learn more on how you can make a difference to vulnerable animals, please ring the Recruitment Officer on 0115-956 3799 (recruitment calls only). Many other volunteering roles are also available. Animal Accident Rescue Unit lifeline telephone number for dealing with animals in distress is 0115-932 1555. For non-urgent queries and information, email us at admin@ aaru.org.uk, visit www.animalaccident.org. uk, or by post to PO Box 5414, Burton Joyce, Nottingham NG14 5DT.
