Banoffi Pie
Kieran’s Key Lime Pie
300g ginger biscuits 70g butter 397g tin condensed milk or caramel 3 bananas 300ml whipping cream chocolate for decoration 20cm spring based cake tin Method
This recipe is adapted from a BBC Food recipe. 375g gluten free digestive biscuiits 150g butter 8 large limes (zest & juice) 1 pint double cream 397g tin condensed milk to decorate (optional) 85g creme fraiche If using condensed milk - place tin in a 1 tsp lime zest large pan of boiling water - making sure the tin is completely covered. Boil the tin for 2 to 3 hours. Keep checking and topping up with boiling water. This is very important. If the tin isn’t covered it could explode! If this is too much for you just use a tin of caramel. Grease the tin. I line with greaseproof paper to make it easier to get the pudding out. Crush the ginger biscuits (I use a food processor) to fine crumbs. Melt the butter in a saucepan. Once melted, add the biscuit crumbs and mix well. Line the bottom of the tin with the mixture and press up the sides. Use a flat bottomed jar to press the mixture firmly then place in fridge to set for a couple of hours. Slice the bananas and place on the biscuit base. Pour over the caramel (if using boiled condensed milk be very careful when opening the tin). Whip the cream and when cool cover the top with cream. Decorate with chocolate shavings or sprinkles.
Method
Crush the biscuits either in a food processor or in a bag with a rolling pin. Melt the butter in a pan and stir in the crushed biscuits. The mixture can be split between 2 x 18cm tins or 1 x 23cm tin. Press mixture into tins & chill in the fridge. Put lime juice, condensed milk & cream in a bowl and whisk for 1-2 mins. Add lime zest to mixture (save a tsp for decoration) and stir in. Pour mixture onto biscuit bases and chill for 2 hours or overnight. Decorate with crème fraiche and lime zest
Strawberry Tart
This recipe is adapted from one by Jocelyn Dimbleby in a Sainsbury’s cook book called Sweet Dreams.
175g plain flour 60g caster sugar 100g butter 300ml creme fraiche 350g strawberries 3 tbsp strawberry jam finely grated rind & juice of 1 orange (3 tbsp) Method
Sift flour & sugar into a bowl. Melt butter in a pan along with the orange rind and 2tbsp juice. Once melted add to bowl and mix well until a smooth dough is formed. Press mixture into a 24cm flan tin. Using hands press over the bottom & up the sides then chill in fridge for 30 mins. Heat oven to 200°C. Bake pastry blind for 20 mins until edges are pale golden colour. Take out oven and pour in creme fraiche then return to oven for 10 mins. Once tart is cold decorate with strawbs. Gently heat the strawberry jam with a tbsp of orange juice and spoon over the top to glaze. Chill until ready to serve.

Band Entertains Visitors in Style Nottingham Concert Band entertained visitors to a celebratory picnic at Patchings Farm Art Centre near Calverton in August to mark the centre’s 25th anniversary. The concert included a ‘pick-&-mix’ first half, where Conductor R o b e r t Parker invited members of the audience to help choose some of the pieces for the 50-strong band to play. The second half of the programme took the form of a mini-Proms concert, complete with enthusiastic singing and flag-waving. ‘The selection of music, the quality and the atmosphere was just what we wanted and we couldn’t have asked for more,’ said Patchings’ Chas Wood. ‘ It really helped us celebrate in style!’ For more about Nottingham Concert Band, visit www.nottinghamconcertband.org or call 01949 860126.

What is Healthwatch? The primary task of local Healthwatch is to gather evidence from the views and experiences of patients, service users, carers and the public about their local health and social care services. Healthwatch then provides feedback (both positive or critical) to health and social care commissioners, or in serious case scenarios, to the Care Quality Commission or Healthwatch England, in order to effect service change or improvement. Why is Healthwatch needed? Firstly, the structure of the NHS is changing fast and appears to be getting more complicated. Secondly, the current severe budget cuts in Local Authority expenditure (which includes social care services) and the no budget growth position for the NHS (having to meet the needs of an ageing population, more people with long term conditions and rising cost of treatment), is putting increasing strain on the health and social care system. A third factor is the aspiration, long-standing but seldom achieved, of better integrating health and social care services where it makes sense and would save resources. What is Healthwatch Nottinghamshire doing? Healthwatch Nottinghamshire is at the stage of making itself better known and familiar to the people of Nottinghamshire. The “Have Your Say Forms” are available on the webpage. Leaflets are also being distributed and all people who are on the mailing list (some 800 people and rising) receive the monthly newsletter. We are currently recruiting volunteers to act as Healthwatch “champions” or Healthwatch outreach volunteers. So if you want to get involved, perhaps have your say, receive a newsletter, become a volunteer or just to get in touch with your local Healthwatch, then: Phone: 0115 963 5179 E: info@healthwatchnottinghamshire.co.uk www.healthwatchnottinghamshire.co.uk Twitter: @HWNotts

The Queens Head by Gloria Morgan The landscape of Kimberley Main Street is changing. The Queen’s Head is empty and up for sale. With so many pubs closing, it is unlikely to re-open. What, one wonders, will replace it? There has been much talk lately of the regeneration of ‘the high street’ which set me thinking about what, for the people of Kimberley, would be a good replacement for the pub that has stood there for the past 150 years.
To my mind, here in Kimberley ‘the high street’ refers collectively to Main Street, James Street and The Precinct. We already have a lot of shops selling a variety of goods and services. So what are we lacking? What gap might be filled by a new and innovative business in the town? To find that out, let’s review what we have. I’ve decided to approach my survey in a simple, alphabetical way. Do we have anything beginning with A – yes, we do – a new Antiques emporium is opening on James Street. We have B for Book-maker, we have Chippies (2), a Dog groomer, several Estate agents and a lovely Flower shop. You can buy Greetings cards for all occasions. We are blessed with numerous Hairdressers, and an artist in Ink. Just down the hill in the church hall we have Jumble sales and several people will sell you a Kebab. Despite the loss of The Queen’s Head, we still have a number of Licensed premises. On the precinct you can buy Magazines and newspapers. We are served by a Nail studio and an Optician. Happily, we still have a Post Office and we even have a Quilt shop. Can’t count the Restaurants. Need a Solicitor – no problem. We have award-winning Tea rooms and somewhere to buy an Umbrella. We boast fresh Veg and Mr Plumb will sell you a Watering can. You can be referred for an X-ray by the
doctor, and buy several flavours of Yoghurt. Last but not least . . . Oh, dear. For all the multiplicity of things on offer I cannot think of a single item beginning with the last letter of the alphabet. So that must be where we are lacking. What does Kimberley need that begins with Z? I know – let’s replace The Queen’s Head with a Zoo ! Wouldn’t that be a brilliant idea? There would be no need to pull the building down – just a simple rearrangement of the interior, keeping the familiar landmark on the corner of Main Street. While you are out buying your knick-knacks you could pop in and see the parrots. Need a book of stamps? On your way, you could spend a happy half hour with the baboons. En route to a shampoo and set, you could leave time to drop in and say hello to the alligators. Small children would clamour to visit the marmosets and the giant tortoise would bring calm and tranquillity to the highly stressed. If we had a pregnant giant panda it would well and truly put Kimberley on the tourist map. Don’t you just love the idea? Go on – admit you do. Now you’ve got the thought in your mind, and you’ve imagined going to see the elephants, whatever else the fate of The Queen’s Head turns out to be, it’s bound to be a disappointment.

KIMBERLEY FARMERS' MARKET cakes are hard to resist. Even our feathered friends are catered for, with a stall offering bird feeders and seeds.
The first Saturday in each month sees a hive of activity in Kimberley as the stallholders arrive and set up for the monthly Farmers’ Market. This is held on Toll Bar Square and offers a wide range of home made or home produced items for sale. Among the foodstuffs to be enjoyed are cheese, butter, yogurts and eggs, as well as jams, chutney and marmalade. Meat products include fresh meat, pies and pasties and you can also obtain fresh vegetables and fruit to go with them. Gorgeous bread and

Other produce includes home made greetings cards, soaps and oils and beautifully made wooden items. Local author, Gloria Morgan is usually on hand with copies of her latest book and there are three coffee shops handily placed. Even with all that is currently on offer, we always welcome new stallholders and if you would like to bring your wares to Kimberley Farmers’ Market, you can e-mail me on sue49cooper@hotmail.co.uk. Or give me a call on 07780 534293. Because of the popularity of the market, we have decided to stay open until 2 p.m. instead of 1 p.m. so that you can enjoy all there is to offer for longer.

Eastwood Funeral Director Honoured With Prestigious Award A Nottinghamshire funeral director has been honoured with a special award - which has been presented only 25 times in the last 100 years. Barry Hutsby is one of the partners of the Eastwood Funeral Partnership, which has four funeral homes in Eastwood, Heanor, Stapleford and Kimberley, an independent firm in which can trace its origins back to Victorian times. His dedication to the funeral industry has been rewarded with honorary membership of the National Association of Funeral Directors and Mr Hutsby becomes just the 26th person to receive the award since the organisation was founded in 1905.
During his 40 years as a funeral director Barry has held various positions within the professional organisation, including national president. He is currently secretary of the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire branch of the association and chairman of the code of practice committee. “I feel incredibly honoured to have received this award and knowing that members of my own profession have chosen to present me with it fills me with pride,” Barry said. “I am thrilled that my service to this evolving industry has been acknowledged and also that my commitment to the national association, which I have always found to be a source of help and support, has been rewarded too.”

An Eastwood bistro which offers training and work experience to young adults with learning difficulties celebrated its six month anniversary in August with a special visitor for Afternoon Tea. The D.H. Lawrence Bistro at the D.H. Lawrence Heritage Centre on Mansfield Road enjoyed a VIP visit from the Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Iris White who dropped in to help them celebrate by sampling their signature Victorian Afternoon Tea. The Bistro forms part of D.H.Lawrence Heritage and is managed by Patricia Ironside. It provides supported employment and training to adults with learning difficulties from across Nottinghamshire who are aged 25 or over. The trainees are involved in all aspects of the business, from hospitality and food preparation to cooking. The Bistro is open to visitors to the attraction Tuesday to Sunday from 10am daily and offers a range of delicious treats from smoked salmon sandwiches to clotted cream scones and Victorian sponge cake. Afternoon Tea for two is just £14.99 and for a special occasion this can be upgraded to a Champagne or Chocolate Afternoon tea. For more information about the D.H. Lawrence Bistro and to discuss catering for weddings, birthdays and other functions, please contact Patricia Ironside on 01773 717 353 or email pironside@hotmail.co.uk

Preparing your Home for the Winter Top tips from Age UK Notts for preparing your home for those cold winter months; 1. Check your radiators are warm at the top and bottom. If cold at top they need bleeding, if cold at the bottom they need flushing. 2. Make sure your boiler is serviced. This can prevent those untimely breakdowns. 3. Insulation – keeps the house warmer and cuts those energy bills For help finding a local trustworthy trader, call the local Age UK Business Directory on 0800 0111643. For general Information and Advice on keeping warm this winter call Age UK Notts on 0115 8440011.

Ella’s Teen Talk:
Handling Parents
...especially at Christmas!
The date was the 26th July. I was completely unprepared. I couldn’t believe it. I was happily spending my day taking a lovely walk and shopping with my mum when she turned to me and said ‘’Oh I better start thinking about Christmas presents!’’ It was July.
Ella Higginbotham aged 15
Don’t get me wrong I love getting in the Christmas spirit; going out and buying lots of presents then coming back home and wrapping them with a warming cup of tea and my favourite Christmas CD playing in the background, but that normally occurs about a week before Christmas. Why do some parents insist on starting the preparations for Christmas before the Halloween costumes are even in the shops? Bless them; they just can’t contain their excitement! Well when I say parents, this usually applies to mums. In fact the dads are quite the opposite, waiting until Christmas Eve to approach the shops with a panicked look as they rummage through the scraps of what the women haven’t already brought. So my advice to you is to leave them both to it and just aim to start your preparations somewhere in between so if your parents do get stressed, it isn’t your problem (but don’t tell them that, that wouldn’t help with their stress!) Another parental bug bare of mine around Christmas is the food shopping. Do they think that there will be food shortages for 9 months after Christmas?! Seriously there are only so many mince pies I can eat before I actually resort to fruit as a substitute. I really do appreciate the effort that goes into Christmas dinner (my favourite meal of the year) and indeed the effort in the whole day in general, but it is ruined when we live off the left overs for weeks afterwards. My last column was about handling money so here is an extra tip for parents: buy half the food that you think you need, for the sake of the children! In my opinion, winter is the best time of year; coming home from school after battling through the cold and snow to be greeted with a hot chocolate Next and pyjamas at 4 o’clock in the afternoon, Christmas is just the icing on the cake. issue: Everyone loves the festivities no matter how many times they have been through New it or how hard it was to get there so my Years last tip is this, even if your parents get too overexcited about buying presents or Resolutions... decorating the tree don’t ruin it, it is a a good thing? magical time for them.

Four serial shop lifters will also feel the force of our war against antisocial behaviour. Following work with several different shops in the local area we have been able to report persistent offenders for summons and this will see them having a criminal ASBO attached to the prosecution they will receive through the courts.
The 43-year-old of Lynncroft, has received an eight week prison sentence for the attempted theft of a car. The other news I’d like to draw your attention to is the £10,000 reward Crimestoppers is offering following the robbery which took place in Nuthall in July 2013. The robbery took place at about 8pm when two men assaulted a couple who were in the garden of their home in Nottingham Road. One of the victims said: “This attack terrified the life out of my wife and me. Since it happened she has not wanted to be alone in the house or sit in the garden, which she used to enjoy. “It all happened very quickly but she kept shouting at the men not to hurt me. We don’t like to talk about it and I worry that it has affected her deeply.” An image of the diamond ring, along with a £10,000 reward has been released in the hope that it might generate more information about the robbery. Anyone with any information about the robbery or the offenders is asked to contact DC Aram on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. A 25-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the incident remains on bail.
We’ve also had a great result after the arrest of Gary Parkin.
