: s Season 1 r e d n fe e D iews The sn’t Enough Bur ton Rev I t s u J g in g W hen Aven After the fantastic and brutal first season of DareDevil, the gripping thriller that was Jessica Jones, the muddled but still cool as hell second season of DareDevil, the perfectly stylised Luke Cage, and the kinda bland Iron Fist these four diverse and in some cases very volatile heroes must unite, not to avenge a loss, but to defend the city they all so fondly call home. After years of separately doing their arse-kicking thing with varying degrees of success, each one has been left in very different circumstances. But when a mysterious and shadowy cult known as the Hand begins an attack on New York that could spell the literal crumbling of the city to nothing but dust, these four heroes must put aside their personal problems and differences and together bare the full weight of all the city’s problems and stop once and for all the sinister force behind its downfall. With any team-up project on this scale the main and inescapable worry is always: how are they going to do so many characters justice? Thankfully this show does an unbelievably good job, highlighting the best elements from all the different shows. Getting to see these larger than life characters interact is a treat. The script is snappy, and while there are lots of laughs, the dialogue between the characters also has a lot of heart. This being their first meet up, we get to explore how these characters mesh together, what their friendships look like, and what elements each brings out in one another. And when these New York icons had to come face to face with a room bursting with over excited and well armed ninjas, or had to beatdown one in their own ranks, the show cranks it up and it’s hard to take in how epic this kung-fu movie turned super hero show is. Whether it be a one on one brawl between two heated rivals fighting to their very last drop of blood, or our four heroes stuck in a Chinese restaurant fighting off wave after wave of kicking and flipping henchmen,

the action is insane. With such intricate and precise choreography, every fight is a frantic and heart pounding struggle for victory that you just want to rewind and watch again because it was so damn cool. Overall The Defenders may be my favourite Marvel Netflix show to date. Its characters are compelling and loveable, and seeing all the Marvel Netflix worlds collide and combine is a nerdy treat that not only satisfies, but also develops the characters in meaningful and important ways. The story and events actually make sense and the action is sublime with each set piece a unique and memorable bloody brawl. The Defenders = 9.5/10 © Sam Burton (aged 20)

Ringing the Bells I was taking my dog for a walk one afternoon recently and we passed St.Patrick’s church at Nuthall. Out popped the vicar, Rev. Barbara. She invited me in for a cup of tea and to look at the bells. An open day was in progress with bell ringers present, giving demonstrations. A camera had been placed in the belfry giving a live feed onto a big screen in the church. It was fascinating to see what was happening up aloft. The bells are huge and the clappers are enormous. It was a totally new experience for me to see the bells in action. The bells were re-hung 25 years ago and two new bells added, giving a peal of 8 bells. The previous frame for the bells was made of timber but that was replaced with steel girders at that time. On each side of the tower there is a slot with louvers over it which let out the sound. The girders for the new frame were slid through these small slots into the top of the tower and assembled inside like a huge piece of Meccano. The placing of the bells is crucial because they vary in size. Their weight must be spread out equally. Throughout history, apparently, church towers have been known to collapse because the bells on one side were much heavier than on the other and the uneven weight brought the whole structure down. I’d never tried my hand at bell ringing and it wasn’t long before I was being given a lesson. It is on the up-stroke that the sound is produced. The trick, it seems, is not in how hard you pull the rope down, but in how effectively you can stop the rope as it goes back up again. You don’t get a chime until you stop the rope. There is a real knack to it, which I certainly didn’t achieve in my short attempt. It’s quite energetic. You’d get a good work-out if you spent an hour at it, for sure. While the ringers had a tea break, I was taken up to the belfry to see the bells themselves. A little girl kindly minded my dog for me while I

by Gloria Morgan

went up. St Patrick’s is a seriously old church, built around 1200. The walls of the tower are 4ft thick. The spiral staircase leading to the belfry is within the thickness of the wall. The treads of the stairs, where they fan out from a central column, are extremely narrow. It was only at the furthest, widest point that I could put my foot down. They are worn and uneven. The ceiling above is extremely low. There is no hand-hold of any kind.

closed, I found!)

But seeing what was in the belfry was absolutely engrossing and well worth risking life and limb for. (Coming down was better done backwards, with eyes

When I came down I was offered a lesson on a set of hand bells. This was another first for me. With Rev. Barbara, my dog minder and her little brother, we gave a rousing performance of “Three Blind Mice”. It was so successful that we played it twice. It was a very pleasant, informative and social afternoon – all the more so, I think, for being totally unexpected.

own the river in Gunthorpe you will find the stylish celebration restaurant Tom Browns Brasserie. Stuart and Eileen Perkins first opened its doors in May 1986. The restaurant was originally the old victorian school room. In 2001 Stuart and Eileen sold the restaurant to their two sons, Adam & Robin, who rebranded and introduced the famous early bird offer. They have over the years made many refurbishments to the whole restaurant. We were able to choose from either the Al a Carte menu or the early bird menu (1 course £12.50, 2 course £17.50 and 3 courses £22.50). They have recently introduced Brasserie Classics to the menu, such as the classic burger, carbonara pasta and fish

& chips. A good selection of cocktails, wines and beers are also available. The starter of tomato & basil soup and the appetizer of handmade breads were delicious. For the main dish I chose braised lamb shoulder, lamb kofta, spiced aubergine polenta, Zucchini fritter and red cabbage. This meal had the wow factor, beautifully presented, well proportioned and the lamb melts in the mouth.

For the dessert I chose the strawberries, cream & elderflower. You can see that Tom Browns pride themselves in serving great quality food. Toms Browns also run fabulous events throughout the year (see their website). The Winter Ball ‘Electric Cabaret’ with cocktail on arrival, 3 course meal, burlesque, magic, circus acts, live lounge singer and Club Classics with ‘Jon Pleased Wimmin’ will be held on Sat 25th November.

Seasonal Cocktails As the evenings start to draw in and we head into Autumn, thoughts turn to seasonal celebrations, Hallowe’en, Bonfire night and, of course the start of the Christmas (yes, I said it!) party season. Nothing says “celebration” quite as well as a cocktail or two.

water and bitters”. Of course, people have been mixing drinks for centuries, although it wasn’t until the 1700s or so that reference to the cocktail precursor the “slings” and “toddies” first made it into the contemporary records.

The history of how the cocktail got its name isn’t clear. Some theories suggest the drinks were named after the “cocktailed horse” (a horse whose tail had been docked to show that it wasn’t a thoroughbred – i.e was “mixed”). Others suggest the word “cocktail” refers to the leftovers of a cask of ale, called “cocktailings” the cocktailings from various spirits would be mixed together and sold at a cheaper price than the “pure” spirit.

Whatever its origins you can be as imaginative as you like with your cocktails, or indeed non-alcoholic “mocktails”. You can even tailor them to your event, how about a creepy blood red Hallowe’en Cocktail with crème de cassis, vodka, pomegranate, orange bitters and blackberries? Or a Bonfire Night Cocktail served warm using a light red wine spiced with star anise, a cinnamon stick, cloves, clementines, some lemon zest and Cointreau, sweetened with muscovado sugar.

The first reference to the cocktail as an alcoholic drink seems to have been in 1806 in America where it was defined as “a stimulating liquor composed of spirits or any kind, sugar,

Here’s a few ideas to see you through the Autumn, with any luck it still might be warm enough for the odd evening in the garden.

Autumn Apple and Elderflower

Summer Scented Strawberry Fizz

Minty Mojito Mocktail

English apples are coming into their best at this time of year. Juice your own or a buy a really good quality ready-pressed version. (serves 8)

Use the last of the British strawberries, if you can still find some, with this delightfully fragrant drink. (serves 2)

If the mint is still flourishing in your pots, try this refreshing mocktail to help use it up. (serves 2)

Ingredients 100g hulled and halved strawberries 50g castor sugar 2 tablespoons rosewater (less if you are using an essence) 1x chilled bottle prosecco

Ingredients 1 tablespoon sugar Handful of fresh mint Juice of 3 limes Soda water

Ingredients 250ml gin 200 ml elderflower cordial 1ltr cloudy apple juice (or make your own if you have a juicer – even better!) In a jam jar, mix the gin with the cordial. When ready to serve, divide the gin mix between 8 glasses and top up with the apple juice, add a handful of crushed ice and garnish with apple slices.

Dip the rims of the glasses first in lemon juice and then in some castor sugar to form a sugary lip to each glass. Puree the strawberries, sugar and rosewater in a blender. Add a spoon or two to each glass and top with prosecco. Serve with a slice of strawberry on the side.

Using some of the lime juice, dip the rims of the glasses in the juice and then into some salt. Crush the mint leaves and sugar together in a pestle & mortar (just enough to combine, not a puree). Place a handful of crushed ice in each glass, divide the lime juice between them, with the mint mix and top up with soda water. Garnish with more fresh mint and a slice of lime.

Warning Signs In An Interview by Helen Jones

When you land that interview for your dream job it’s always important to remember that in some respects you should be interviewing them too. Cultural and personality fit within an organisation is just as important as the role itself. If that’s not right you could find yourself dreadfully unhappy within a short period of time. Most candidates are so nervous during the interview process they don’t realise that the potential employer asking certain questions should ring alarm bells. Some of them are illegal and some simply unethical. • Age, gender, ethnicity, religion and other protected characteristics. It’s against the law to ask where a person is from or whether English is their first language. Or even the issue of age and ability to do a job. It’s not relevant and could be deemed discriminatory. • Asking someone if they plan to have children or if they already have a family can make them feel very uncomfortable and suggests that they may be overlooked for the position if they give the ‘wrong’ answer. Again, it is not relevant and could raise concerns over discrimination. • Confidential information from previous positions. It is inappropriate to ask candidates about potentially sensitive information from their last job, especially if the candidate has a non-disclosure agreement in place. • Sick days. If there is a significant gap on a CV it may be appropriate to ask a candidate about it. However, asking a candidate how many sick days they had in a previous job is essentially prying into their health and invading their privacy. • Trade Union Membership. This isn’t information that an interviewer needs to know in order to assess a person’s suitability for a job and totally unprofessional to broach. Remember that the interview experience tells you an enormous amount about the company and about what it’s like to work there – so listen out for the signs that could guide you in the right direction.

We lost our home –

can we come home with you? ‘Miaow! I’m Cathy and I’m six years old, and this is my sister Cherry aged about seven. Until a few months ago, we lived happily with two other cats with my lovely owner who rescued strays. Sadly, she passed away suddenly leaving us shocked and homeless – but we were rescued by Animal Accident Rescue Unit. Not much is known about us but my fosterer found a lump behind my ear and took me to the vet, who was shocked to discover it was an air rifle pellet. It isn’t causing me pain or damage so it’s been decided not to remove it. Despite this I’m very loving and Cherry is too! We want a home together, but could be separated in right homes – can you help us?’ To find out more about Cherry and Cathy, contact the Adoption Officer at admin@aaru. org.uk, who will reply as soon as possible. All potential adoptions need a successful homecheck. Cats are not rehomed on or near busy roads, unless indoor-only. Meanwhile get a bargain and raise essential funds for the charity at its next monthly fair: Saturday 14 October, 2-4pm, at Lowdham Village Hall, Main Street, Lowdham NG14 7BD.

S H O U L D I R U N ? Running for a lot of people is one of the first ‘go to’ forms of exercise. It is only as expensive as a good pair of running trainers for beginners. You can do it just about anywhere at any time. Running is a great cardio exercise – even a slow run for a short time will vastly reduce your risk of heart disease. Running makes your body produce feel good chemicals and there is the added bonus of burning lots of calories. There are loads of great apps to help you achieve your goals, whether it is to run 5k or a marathon. But before you lace your trainers up here are a few things to consider... Road running | Outdoor running Outdoor running, as expected, does feel physically harder than treadmill running. But why? Wind resistance and propulsion are the two main culprits. A mile on a treadmill can seem like ten on the street simply because of these two natural factors. Joint issues are another factor to consider. A lot of people believe that road running and running in general destroys your joints. This is largely a myth. Studies show that of 14,000 runners and 70,000 walkers over a 7-year period, the runners had no worse joint issues than the walkers. In fact osteoarthritis studies state that runners had fewer reports of any issues than the walkers. It seems that running can actually strengthen your joints. The key is to wear the correct trainers and train sensibly. Another common problem for many runners is Plantar fasciitis or flat foot. It is known that a weakness in calf strength, striking heel first while running and improper support in footwear (flat soled footwear) all contribute to plantar fasciitis. But it doesn’t have to stop you running. Wearing the correct footwear, improving your running technique and proper training will all improve the condition.

Treadmill running Should I run on the treadmill instead of road running? There may be factors that will influence your decision – bad weather (quite common in this country) or safety – on a dark winter night an outdoor run can seem daunting. If the treadmill is set to a 1% gradient this replicates the outdoor factors of propulsion and resistance, so your workout will be just as good as a road run. Many people find a treadmill boring – add some interest by using a virtual route on the screen. Running along a “beach” can make time go more quickly. A lot of treadmills now have a soft-landing element to them which can help with joint impact for beginners until you have reached a body mass that your joints are happy with. Then you can take to the streets if you prefer. However you choose to start your running experience, remember to warm up properly before you start and cool down afterwards. Wear proper running shoes fitted to your running style and most importantly... enjoy the moment! The Strength and Physique Team

With our new players settling in, recent victories over top teams Rolls Royce, Porchester, Blidworth and Nottingham University indicate better things to come. Unfortunately lack of support for our club at Coronation Park is worrying. Bowls has a social aspect and the club plays several friendlies during the season. Our visits to Skegness Town and recently Wymswold were days to remember. Thanks go to our club officials, particularly our secretary who has kept the show on the road during a turbulent season. Good luck to our indoor bowls players . Our AGM is on Friday October 20th. Proposals to be submitted in writing. If you are interested in bowls call us on 01773 711063 or 01773716076.

kids Local Guide Leader Heads for Challenges Overseas

Most Spectacular Flying High Trust Awards Yet!

Nottinghamshire's Flying High Trust welcomed 15 primary schools from around the county to the Royal Concert Hall Nottingham for their glittering annual awards event. Franki Cripps (26), Assistant Leader with 1st Eastwood Rainbows, is currently in Mexico on a GOLD project (Guiding Overseas Linked with Development). Part of a team supporting peer education and developing girls' leadership skills, Franki will also be helping to recruit, retain and train local Guide Leaders. Her team originally intended to work in Peru but were re-assigned to Mexico at the beginning of August following floods in Peru - a move which added to the challenge! Their blog can be followed at www.goldmexico.wordpress.com ‘Guiding is very special to me!’ says Franki, who has been appointed First Aider for the team. ‘I am so excited to share my own experiences, learn from others' and broaden my knowledge of international guiding.’ The first challenge for Franki was to raise £1850 towards the cost of the trip. Her fundraising included a bake sale, a quiz night and a coffee morning and she’s also been ‘selling’ dates in her diary, with a cash prize for the one drawn out at the completion of her campaign. Franki can be supported via her JustGiving page – visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ Francesca-Cripps Enquiries about volunteering with Girlguiding Nottinghamshire across the county are always welcome: explore www. girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk to find out more.

The occasion recognises the achievements of children and school staff in several categories reflecting the Trusts' ethos which are, Aspiration, Responsibility, Creativity, Pride, Confidence, Perseverance and Enjoyment. Mr. Chris Wheatley, CEO of The Flying High Trust said that the event is gaining momentum year on year. The event, said Chris, was a celebration of what is best in education. Special guest speaker at the event, Alan MacDonald, is an author and said that the event was a fun filled celebration of talent. Alan presented the award for Creativity and said it was a special treat for him. "Creativity is at the heart of everything and without it life would be very dull and boring. As a children’s author, I think the vital importance of creativity sometimes gets overlooked in education so I was very pleased to present an award that shone a spotlight on it. It was an honour to attend the awards and a joy to see the children performing on a big stage with such panache and enthusiasm.”The cheering took the roof off the concert hall!

ottingham Off Roading Events are based in the heart of Nottingham’s Sherwood Forest, spanning 60 acres. They offer a wide range of outdoor and indoor activities using several centres within the area. Whether you are wanting an activity for the kids, a family, corporate /team event or a special party package they have so much to offer including quad biking, archery, rifle shooting, crossbow, It’s a Knockout and much more. Upon arrival we were met by Sarah and Shaun, who explained that we would be trying out the 4x4 driving experience. Age restrictions to this activity do apply, driving the Landrover is allowed over 15 years of age (no driving licence is required) – children can be passengers. We had Shaun as a guide in the passenger seat, helping us with advice along the way through woodland trails, ditches, hills and

loads of mud and water!!! The whole experience was brilliant fun and the four of us cannot wait to go back. They have a cafe on site for refreshments. Take a look at their website www. nottinghamoffroadevents.co.uk For a full list of activities and events.

Time to End the Stigma…

A

wareness of mental health issues is improving all the time and yet it is still a common reaction for people to feel ashamed at their mental health issues, which may lead to sufferers choosing not to seek help for those issues. Recent years have seen mental health awareness improve by leaps and bounds, with an annual Mental Health Awareness week in May as well as regular campaigns on social media sites such as Facebook, urging us to be aware of mental health issues and to end the stigma which surrounds them. Terms such as depression, anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorders (OCD) are now widely known and people recognise that these illnesses exist and need to be treated to allow the sufferer to lead a healthy and meaningful life. And yet, despite this increase in awareness, it still seems that there are many people out there, struggling under the weight of these illnesses, who are afraid to seek help for them. Many of these people believe it is a moral failing of theirs rather than illness, that it merely denotes them as weak rather than unwell. And due to the feelings of shame which surround mental illness, many people who suffer under the burden of these debilitating and often life-limiting illnesses choose not to seek help – in a way that they wouldn’t with a physical illness. People don’t generally shrug off painful or worrying physical symptoms as a sign that they are weak nor

do people tend to blame themselves for catching an illness such as flu. In those situations, people will accept the help that they are offered and see no failing on their part for feeling the way that they do. Scrolling through my Facebook feed has, on recent occasions, been a very sad and upsetting activity. On a number of occasions, I have read distressing updates about people who have obviously been suffering with mental health issues and have chosen to end their lives as a way to put an end to the real pain that they are in. And so often, after these sad events, I have seen an outpouring of love and support for the deceased, a real sense that people would only have been to glad to help and to offer support if only they had known. So what can we do to end this stigma that surrounds mental health? To make sure that people feel no more shame about illnesses that concern their mental wellbeing as they would about physical ailments? As well as supporting the many mental health awareness campaigns that happen throughout the year, we could also make sure that we have that conversation with our loved ones, with our family and friends and colleagues and make sure that they know that there is no shame in suffering from a mental illness. According to the World Health Organisation, around one in four of us will be affected by mental illness at some point in our lives. It would benefit us all if we ended the stigma which surrounds it.

AT THE HEART OF YOUR FUNERAL PLANNING When we started providing funeral pre-payment plans more than 20 years ago, the idea of ‘paying for your funeral in advance’ was quite unusual. Today, funeral plans are more well known, and available from a wide variety of sources. However, you wouldn’t buy a will from a DIY superstore, so why buy something so important from someone who knows nothing about funerals, your local area, or you. Buying a plan from Gillotts means you can sit down with one of our staff who know local facilities and talk about what you want your funeral to be like. If you wish, you can go into details: music, flowers, what everyone should wear, which photographs to Eastwood Office

TAROSCOPES Air signs- Libra, Aquarius, Gemini (King of Wands, Five of Wands, The Tower) Get ready to rumble. Seeing how things really are is a quality Air signs are born with. Alas, that also sometimes curses you with saying how it is too, and that doesn’t always go down well. Well, you’re thick skinned enough to take the flak and the truth needs to be said. Expect a reaction and some changes as a result, but know that the relationships you go forth with now are based on firmer foundations.

Fire signs- Leo, Aries, Sagittarius

(The Sun, Knight of Swords, The Hermit) In or out? It’s time to get serious with yourself about the decision you face. Are you in or out? If you can make a confident choice and then devote your powerful energies and wily mind to making a go of it, then a new era of success and prosperity is achievable. Everything starts within, so make this decision internally and set off with intent.

Earth signs- Capricorn, Virgo, Taurus

(Six of Cups, Four of Cups, Knight of Coins) Shake off this mood. Everyone feels nostalgia for a certain person or time in their life, and happy memories are precious. But if you start to let yourself believe that your best days are behind you, then you’re in danger of making that the case. You’ve become apathetic about the gifts right under your nose. Shake off this mood before it takes a deeper hold.

Water signs- Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio

(The Wheel of Fortune, The Tower, Queen of Cups) The house of cards is set to tumble. One little change has a knock on effect across your whole life, setting off a chain reaction of ups and downs which leave your head spinning. Don’t resist this tidal wave. In fact, roll with it and keep acknowledging your emotions as you do so. Let your best hopes, not your fears, guide you through a challenging, but invigorating, period.

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team..... Staying Safe at Halloween We want you to enjoy Halloween, but remember, not everyone wants to take part! Here’s a few things to remember when you’re out this Halloween. • If you’re going trick or treating, make sure you go with an adult and your parent or carer knows where you’re going and when to expect you back. • Respect posters asking you not to trick or treat at someone’s house. • Don’t go trick or treating alone - stay with your group. • Eggs and flour are for baking. Don’t throw them. • Be careful crossing roads in the dark. Have a great time, stay safe and look out for each other. If you or someone you know is in danger call 999.

If you are using fireworks at home simply follow our guidelines to ensure you have a safe but fun bonfire night. Remember remember... • Only buy fireworks from a legitimate retailer. • You should never throw or set off a firework in the street, onto a road or in a public place. • You’re not allowed to set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am except on Bonfire night whereby the curfew is midnight to 7am. • Anyone caught causing a nuisance with fireworks will receive an instant fine of £80 and any fireworks found on a person under18 will be confiscated. For more crime prevention information please visit our website: http://www. nottinghamshire.police.uk/ advice

Fireworks Safety Fireworks are great fun but it is important to remember that they can also cause distress and injuries if not handled properly.
