The Office Christmas Party Business As Usual? The season of office Christmas parties is fast approaching and although we all want it to be memorable – make sure it is for the right reasons. • Alcohol – a free bar is not a challenge to drink it dry. Alcohol lowers your inhibitions and makes you believe you’re funnier/wittier and a better dancer than you actually are. Drink in moderation and keep your behaviour and witty comebacks to an acceptable level…If you have chosen to drive then don’t drink at all. Not even one mouthful. • Don’t be the main topic of conversation the next day – you’re not on holiday with friends and desperate to let your hair down. You’re surrounded by colleagues who will probably remember every bit of your indiscreet conversations/bitching about your boss and gladly repeat them to HR if it gives them an advantage. This is all about your career and protecting your path upwards. • Dress/Undress - The office party is not the occasion to flaunt your gym honed body (or any type of body) Don’t flash the flesh at any point. Especially after consuming alcohol… • Romance – Just no. Shenanigans with a work colleague will never stay private. You will be the talk of the company and future work prospects could be seriously compromised. Especially if either or both of you are already in a relationship… • Dancing – Again alcohol makes most people think they’re Beyoncé or Michael Jackson. Lap dancing or twerking just isn’t appropriate in front of your colleagues. If you feel the urge grab a glass of water and sit down for goodness sake. And wait for common sense to return. Virtually everyone has a smartphone these days and your moves could end up on the internet for infinity… • The morning after – never ever call in sick with “food poisoning” or any other lame excuse. Nobody will believe you trust me. If you genuinely can’t get in then be honest. When all is said and done Christmas parties are a great opportunity to let your hair down and celebrate with your co workers so enjoy! On behalf of myself and all the staff here at SOLOS I’d like to wish you all a Happy Christmas and prosperous New Year. © Helen Jones

Why customers drive hundreds of miles to see an Arnold blinds & curtains Showroom.... 'well, we used to be a normal blinds company' explains Nick, who began as Highbury Blinds in 1987 after working for a national blinds firm, 'but then Stephanie became my business partner and as we were both artists originally it seemed logical to apply our experience to the business. Originally, I did all the measuring and fitting myself all over the city- I can't count the number of times I've heard the 'has he got his white stick?' joke as I go in a home to measure for blinds! Funnily enough, I unwittingly helped a Clifton Council tenant get their fire fitted because of this. To measure her windows I had to squeeze past a boxed gas fire in the hall, which had stood there for three months awaiting Council gas fitters. When I went back to fit her blinds, she delightedly told me it was now fitted, all thanks to me. After I had left after the first visit, she had called the Council, mentioning that I had struggled to get past the fire...and the fitters were around immediately, to her delight. After they finished, they asked if the blind man was ok... she said yes, he's fine.. and coming back next week to fit the blind... why do you ask? They had found this very funny apparently.. ' These days, Highbury Design make curtains, window seats, headboards as well as blinds'anything that involves fabric - I'm a textile person!' says Stephanie, who began her working life as a textile and knitwear designer. 'We began making Japanese Blinds ('Shoji' Screens) a few years ago, and because of the name 'Highbury' a TV company wanted us for a Sarah Beeny programme- they nearly didn't use us when they realised we had no London connection! However, as noone else makes them they hired a London showroom and we had to rush some blinds down there for filming. Sarah loved them, and we appeared on 'Double Your House For Half The Money' which resulted in nearly eleven thousand website hits! We've also been featured on BBC2 and Channel 4, so we get a lot of customers travelling long distances to see our original designs- I think the furthest was a lady from Dorset!'

Stephanie and Nick keep their prices competitive but don't compromise on qualityas Steph says, ‘if you're having bespoke curtains then there's no point using cheap fabric, when labels like Harlequin and Prestigious Textiles are excellent value for money.’ They have over 5,000 fabrics at their Arnold Showrooms, so there are lots to choose from. They are often commissioned to do jobs that the 'big names' simply can't do - unusual shaped windows are a speciality for Steph's curtain-making team. Curtain fabrics are often chosen for their Japanese blinds and room dividers - 'but we sell most of these in London, where highly contemporary soft furnishings are in demand' explains Nick. 'we import the timber for our Shoji blinds from Spain, where it is all air-dried. Kiln-dried wood is useless as the slightest warping will distort the panels. It's Obeche, which is almost the lightest weight timber on the planet, and that's the real secret. We sometimes use Japanese paper but most customers prefer fabrics' So that's Arnold's big secret - showrooms visited by clients from all over the country! Highbury Design are open Mon-Fri 9-5pm, and most Saturdays 10-2pm ('phone first). Lots to see, and if you want the unusual, this is the place! They are on 0115 9671188, or email them through the website highburydesign.co.uk and don't forget, they make all types of blinds, Romans, verticals, Venetians in wood and metal, rollers, pleateds and sash blinds.

Record Breaking Real Estate It’s the long awaited news that has been well overdue for the commercial property market as recent reports have confirmed that property transactions are set to exceed £70 billion at the end of 2015, the highest on record! These statistics mark a significant shift in the commercial property market from the distant days of the recession to the present day which paints somewhat more of a positive picture powered by improved economic growth which can be seen in both consumer and business sectors. Consumer confidence is reaching its highest levels since the nineties as occupational demand and rental growth are being noted in regional cities outside of London. Momentum continues to grow reflected by higher leasing activity, robust spending trends and increasing retail sales. Demand for prime shopping centres remains competitive as attractive yields entice opportunistic capital. The £600m redevelopment of Grand Central in Birmingham is a prime example of this opportunistic investment. Development like this highlights the ambition and foresight in the regions as the private sector are able to capitalise on investment in a bid to attract the most high profile names into their regions, subsequently having a knock on ‘domino effect’ on the continued regeneration of cities.

Business investment is a further driver of commercial property growth and has been central to significant increase in activity as a result of the government’s corporation tax rate cut and low rates of inflation. Amongst keen investors, offices are providing the most popular asset although as many struggle to find suitable opportunities in central London, alternatives are being sought in regional markets that are able to provide suitable alternatives to the capital. This new business boosts confidence and economic growth on a regional scale which is further fuelled by Local Growth Funds from the government in a bid to revive, regenerate and grow the regions. However, there is no doubt that this record breaking growth and demand for commercial property currently outweighs supply as the new found healthy appetite for capital spending and staff hiring grows across the UK, the need for prime stock is more important than ever. 2015 has been a record breaking year for commercial property as consumer, investor and most importantly, lender confidence increased however, what is in store for 2016? It is predicted that the economic recovery will continue into 2016 driven by consumer spending and business investment as growth is propelled by high job creation underpinned by robust private consumption and investment. Here’s to a prosperous 2016! For more information please contact Rothera Dowson’s Commercial Property team on 0800 0886270.

Nottingham is named as England’s official ‘Home of Sport’ REMEDI RESTORATIVE JUSTICE SERVICES NOTTINGHAMSHIRE TEAM Remedi is a charitable organisation funded by the police and crime commissioner to deliver restorative justice services within Nottinghamshire. Restorative justice is a voluntary process that aims to restore the wellbeing of victims, offenders and communities damaged by crime, by bringing together all those affected in a safe way to address the harm that has been caused. We will prepare all parties individually until they are ready to communicate; either directly (face to face) or indirectly (letters/shuttle messages). Restorative Justice is available at various stages of the criminal justice process including; after arrest, after conviction or even once the offender has been released. The process aims to meet the needs of the parties involved so there are numerous benefits for both victims and offenders. Restorative justice can give victims a voice allowing them to ask questions, receive an explanation and achieve some form of closure through better understanding. It also gives offenders the opportunity to express remorse, make amends and acknowledge the change needed to prevent further offending. Restorative justice can also have an impact on the wider community as it has been proven to reduce offending rates which in turn reduces the number of victims. To find out more contact us on 0115 9202175, admin.notts@remediuk.org or write to us at Remedi, Arnot Hill House, Arnot Hill Park, Arnold, Nottingham, NG5 6LU.

Nottingham has been announced as England’s official Home of Sport, following a national campaign by tourism board VisitEngland, in a bid to find England’s top sporting destination. Having received more nominations than any other English destination, Nottingham was the ‘People’s Choice’ going into the public vote, and then went on to be a clear winner with 38% of the overall vote. James Berresford, VisitEngland’s Chief Executive, says: “Live sporting events are great drivers for tourism, worth £3.2 billion to the sector. With this accolade, Nottingham has been put firmly on the tourist trail as a must-visit destination for any sports fan. As the site of our glorious Ashes win this summer, the setting for the critically acclaimed I Believe in Miracles film and the home to the National Water Sports Centre, Nottingham offers visitors plenty to see and do.” Simon Starr, Director of Sport Nottinghamshire, said: “I am absolutely delighted that Nottingham has been recognised as England’s Home of Sport. We are blessed with fantastic and iconic facilities, great teams, great coaches and some amazing athletes but more than that, Nottingham is a city that lives and breathes its sport. The title is well deserved and I hope it will help to inspire even more people in Nottingham to lead healthy and active lives” Councillor Dave Trimble, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Nottingham City Council, said: “Nottingham is a very worthy winner of this accolade, being voted England’s Home of Sport 2015. Our city offers world-class sporting facilities and events for both local people and for visitors to the area. I’m particularly pleased that we were the ‘people’s choice’ as it shows how proud the people of Nottingham are of their city’s sporting achievements.”

a helping hand Celebrations as Awards are Presented to West Bridgford Volunteers Volunteers from West Bridgford were amongst those from across the county who were honoured at a special Awards Afternoon in September. The celebratory tea party was held by Girlguiding Nottinghamshire at Portland College in Mansfield and County Commissioner Kate Royse presented awards marking the exceptional achievements of some 60 members and supporters. 30-year long service awards were given to West Bridgford’s own Deidre Nall and Anne Hubber whilst Elizabeth R o g e r s r e c e i v e d an award marking her 50 years with Girlguiding. ‘All our volunteers are amazing people and I continue to marvel at their enthusiasm, energy and commitment,’ said Kate Royse after the event. ‘But those celebrated this afternoon have given what I can only describe as exceptional service and it was a privilege to present them with these tokens of our esteem. I believe it’s vital to maintain girl-only spaces in which our young women can develop their potential, and yet it’s only through the support of volunteers like these that we can offer such opportunities to so many girls here in Nottinghamshire.’ Adult supporters are essential if units are to keep open and enquiries about volunteering are always welcome: call county headquarters on 0115 987 7220, e-mail Kate Royse via countycommissioner@girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk or visit Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s website at www.girlguiding-

Nottinghamshire Funeral Service Taking the time to arrange your funeral in advance is a caring step to take for your family. It is also a great financial investment as funeral costs increase every year. You can make a very simple plan that just covers the essentials or you can put down every detail to make it easier for your family as they will not have to make difficult decisions. The funeral directors services are guaranteed to be provided in the future at no further cost, even if the plan exists for many years. The disbursements (that is third party costs) are not guaranteed but usually the investment covers the bulk part of the fees. Disbursements are costs like the crematorium fee, doctor’s certificates, ministers, flowers & newspaper notices.

If a burial is chosen you can invest the current charges and an amount will be issued at the time of using the plan to go towards the charges at the time. Do some market research before signing on the dotted line though as some companies pay commission to the person you are taking the plan through which is taken from the funds you invest. We can provide all the help you need and give you impartial advice. Contact us for more information or if you have any questions to ask.

cheeses Christmas

Did you know that cheese has “seasons”? We think of fruit and veg as being at their best at certain times of the year but did you know it’s the same for some cheeses? Obviously, mass produced cheeses are pretty much the same all year round, but artisan and traditionally produced cheeses vary according to the type of pasture the cows, sheep or goats were grazing on when they were milked, the weather, the geography, the type of soil and so on. Spring cheeses are all about freshness and youth, the fresh grass and spring flowers give a richness to the milk, with more flavour and more goodness. These soft spring cheeses, like Brillat-Savarin or Delice des Cabasses are eaten after only a few days or weeks of maturing. But Spring is also the time that the milk is churned for the hard cheeses that need longer to mature to be ready in the Autumn and Winter of that year, or the following year. Winter cheeses are about big, bold flavours and we are blessed in this part of the country to have the king of winter cheeses on our doorstep. Our local Stilton is a prized cheese and often takes pride of place on the Christmas Dinner cheese platter. Stilton (both the milder “white” and the traditional “blue”) has been granted a PDO or “Protected

Designation of Origin” status which means the cheese can only be made in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, even though the village of “Stilton” itself is in Huntingdonshire (where the cheese, made on a farm near Melton Mowbray, the story goes, was sold at the Bell Inn on the Great North Road). Stilton can also only be made with pasteurised milk, but there is a beautiful unpasteurised blue cheese made on the Welbeck Estate in North Nottinghamshire called “Stichelton” which has the distinctive sharp characteristic of unpasteurised milk and is definitely a worthy addition to your cheese board.

recipes Christmas

Christmas Roast Duck with a Sour Cherry & Berry Sauce

Festive Stilton Salad with a Tart Apple Dressing

(The secret to getting a nice crispy skin on the duck is to remove the bird from its wrapping the day before you want to roast it, wipe it with kitchen roll to dry it off and then leave on a plate in the fridge, covered loosely with a clean teatowel, to dry out overnight.)

(serves 6 as a side)

Ingredients (serves 3/4) I whole duck (giblets removed) approx 2 kg Salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper For the Sauce 2 packs (approx 80g) of mixed (semi-dried) sour cherries and berries (cranberries, blueberries, sultanas etc) 200ml dry red wine 2 teaspoons red wine vinegar 200g Cherry and Berry Conserve Method Pre-heat oven to 230C To cook the duck, use a small skewer to prick the skin, season with salt and pepper and place on a roasting rack. Roast for approx 2 hours. Place all the ingredients for the sauce into a saucepan bring to a gentle bubble and reduce for about 15 minutes. When the duck is done the skin should be crispy when tapped with a fork, if not, allow a little longer cooking time. Allow the duck to rest for about 20 mins before serving. Drain the excess fat from the roasting tray and finish off the sauce in the tray, add a splash of water and little bit of chicken stock if the sauce is a little too thick. Serve the duck with the sauce alongside (you don’t want to make that lovely skin soggy!) This goes well with the usual Christmas trimmings, but especially well with Brussels Sprouts and pancetta cubes, sautéed in the fat drained from the duck during roasting.

Ingredients Apple Dressing (approx measures according to taste) 2 or 3 tablespoons of unsweetened apple sauce 2 ½ tablespoons Olive Oil 2 tablespoons Cider Vinegar 2 medium Spring Onions, finely sliced ½ tablespoon Dijon Mustard ¼ a teaspoon of salt (and ground black pepper if you wish) Salad 2 Bags Mixed Salad leaves – I recommend romaine, radicchio and curly endive 1 or 2 crisp green or red apples, cored, halved and cut into thin wedges 170g of crumbled Stilton 100g walnut pieces, roughly chopped if large, and toasted Method Whizz or hand-blend the dressing ingredients together until smooth, pour into a jar and refrigerate. When ready to use, shake well to combine and toss in a bowl with the remaining salad ingredients, serve immediately.

For many of us Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a traditional roast turkey, or maybe a goose. But what if you are not catering for a huge number of people or you just fancy something a little bit different? Here’s my suggestion for an indulgent, alternative Christmas centre-piece.

Stilton and Bacon Tarts (Preheat oven to 190C) Ingredients 1 Pack of Shortcrust Pastry For the Filling 4 eggs, Approx 120g Smoked Streaky Bacon, Approx 15ml full fat milk (and I added a dash of single cream too), 125g of Stilton Cheese, Freshly Ground Black Pepper and Sea Salt Method Roll the pastry out to approx 3mm thickness then line your small tart tins (with a loose bottom), prick the base and blind bake for about 15 mins. Allow to cool. Fry off the bacon and snip or crumble into small pieces. Beat the eggs and milk (and cream if using) together and season well. Place a handful of bacon cubes and crumbles of Stilton into each pastry case and then poor over the egg and milk mix and bake for about 20 mins until risen, set and just browned.

(Tip - Immerse apple slices in a bowl of water at room temperature with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice to prevent discolouring, drain well before serving)

This place is great, very different from your usual fish and chip establishment. The whole place is stunning, a grade 2 listed building that has been decorated in an impressive, quirky seaside design. We were seated in one of their ‘beach huts’ ours was called ‘Devon’. Perfect for our family of four. The newspaper menus give you so many choices, not just the ‘usual’ fish dishes, it’s vast. For the starters, it was decided that we try a few different things and share, we had chicken goujons, Georges squid, Georges honey & mustard pork chipolatas and bubble & squeak, we enjoyed all of them. It was hard choosing the main’s, we got there in the end with cod & squeak cake, fish dog, chicken schnitzel burger and the proper dirty double burger, all with twice cooked chips. All the food was lovely, freshly cooked and plenty of it.

This place is a one off. There’s nowhere like it in Nottingham, it brings back so many childhood memories of the seaside. Opened a year ago, you can understand why this restaurant has been voted ‘Winner’ of The International Restaurant & Bar Design awards and also ‘Winner’ of Best New Venue 2015 at the Nottingham Food and Drink awards. My advice is go in and try it for yourselves.... you will not be disappointed! Book now!!!

kids The Nottingham Emmanuel School receives special award for Rugby from Bill Beaumont CBE The Nottingham Emmanuel School in West Bridgford has received a special Gold Standard award from the Rugby Football Union (RFU) for the work it has done to introduce rugby to its students. The award, presented by RFU Chairman and former England Captain Bill Beaumont is to celebrate The Nottingham Emmanuel School’s success in ensuring its rugby programme is sustainable through teacherled curriculum delivery and fixtures for all year groups. The school also offers a girls rugby programme and has developed strong links to the local rugby club Nottingham Moderns. The Nottingham Emmanuel School is one of 15 of the 400 schools currently involved with the ‘All Schools’ programme to have received a Gold Standard award. The RFU has made these awards during the Rugby World Cup to demonstrate the great work that is going on around the nation to ensure there is a real and sustainable legacy from the tournament. RFU Chairman Bill Beaumont said: “It was great to come here to The Nottingham Emmanuel School today and present this award. Nottingham Emmanuel is a fantastic example of how rugby can be integrated into a school and it was great to hear from teachers and students today about the impact the sport has been having. I’m sure as they continue building their rugby programme they will continue to go from strength to strength.”

Nottingham Emmanuel Student Chosen for England Under 13 Ice Hockey Team Nottingham Emmanuel School student Sean Morris is quickly becoming a name to watch in the world of Ice Hockey and this month was selected for the England Under 13s Ice Hockey Team. Although Sean is still young at 12 years old he has already gained a wealth of experience and accolades in the sport that his father first introduced him to at 6 years of age. Sean said the news made him very happy because last year despite his best efforts, he just missed out. Sean will now go through more training camps and games and then in February 2016 he and his teammates will go to Quebec to play in the Global Ice Hockey Tournament. “I am really excited about going to Quebec, the whole experience will be one of a kind. I will live with a local family for a week and a half and look forward to all the experiences I can gain there.” Mr Morris said that Sean’s school, The Nottingham Emmanuel School in West Bridgford, encourage his talent. “Whenever we have spoken to the school, sometimes because of a need for time off to compete, they have been really supportive and have been willing to let Sean pursue his sport.” Sean’s dream now is to make the National Hockey League, where all the best players from around the world compete and his Head of Year at The Nottingham Emmanuel School, Mr John Blakeley said the school is right behind Sean in his quest. “Sean has an incredible talent and I consider myself privileged to be able to support Sean in his achievements. Sean is able to balance lots of school work and his ice hockey commitments so that he continues to strive for excellence in all aspects of life. It will be great to see him develop these skills in the future. Well done Sean!”

your teenager get ahead!

If you’re worried about how your teenager is going to stand out from everyone else in university applications or job interviews, National Citizen Service (NCS) could be the answer. Open to all 16-17 year olds, NCS is a government-backed programme designed to help young people get further in life, education or employment.

Cat Hedges from ng magazines would definitely recommend it after her son took part this summer: “Kieran had an amazing time, it was a perfect time in his life to be involved in something like NCS and it has kept him busy doing something with a great purpose”. Kieran said “it was great fun…. We did loads of outdoor activities in the first week like fire making, I really enjoyed the kayaking and rock climbing. I made loads of new friends and enjoyed working to make the community better.”

Along with thousands of other people their age across Nottinghamshire, they’ll spend time away from home doing outdoor challenges, meeting new people and building their confidence. They’ll build skills with local businesses and charities, whether that’s interview skills or first aid, or learning about issues in their community. Using all their new skills they’ll also create their own community project to benefit your local area. At the end of it they’ll graduate at a special ceremony and receive a certificate signed by the Prime Minister. NCS is valued by employers and universities – it’s recognised by UCAS and looks great on CVs. NCS runs during the school holidays, with the next programme running during February half term. Because NCS is backed by the government, NCS costs only £50, covering all accommodation, transport and meals (during the residential phase), activities and equipment. Bursaries are also available.

Introducing Mirabilè Vocale Ensemble Mirabilé Vocal Ensemble is a select group of sixteen female singers, experienced and auditioned, from the Nottinghamshire area. The singers have varied musical backgrounds, with both choral and soloist experiences. Their Musical Director, Roselise Gentile, is a renowned Italian choral and orchestral conductor and under her guidance the group covers a versatile range of repertoire, featuring solo to full ensemble, to a very high standard. They offer a unique style of programme, with the first part of the performance being drawn from classical female choral repertoire from the 16th to the 20th century, and the second part featuring lighter selections from the British Isles and around the world. Mirabilé have recently undertaken a tour of UK cathedrals in Durham, Liverpool, Manchester, Lincoln and Gloucester, and completed a second tour around northern Italy, to enthusiastic receptions and great acclaim. In May this year Mirabilé were invited to join the internationally renowned group, Blake, on stage for a guest performance and to support them in their sell-out “Blake in Harmony” UK tour. Little Black Dress Season Now here is a topic that appeals to most, not just women wanting to fit into that special dress they bought for the Christmas party but to men who might be heading for a warmer, brighter climate at this time of the year. SO… your fitness plan to drop a few pounds hasn’t gone to plan. You were more social than planned! We hear this a lot from members and clients at this time of the year. The colder nights and the darker evenings alter what our hormone pattern responds to. We are constantly altering client nutrition/diet plans at this time of the year so they continue to produce a result. I’ll let you into a secret or some might say, a trick of the trade. If you are carrying a few extra pounds we always advise dropping ALL carbs for a short period of time (7-10 days max) on the lead up to your special event.* Here’s why; 1. Firstly this will help the body drop a lot of water retention, reducing that bloated feeling. 2. It will also reduce inflammation of the gut and intestines from any wheat and gluten intolerance’s you might have that you are unaware of. 3. Combined with exercise you will drop some weight, both fat and muscle mass unless mass is protected by plenty of protein and essential amino acids. As your insulin levels start to drop you will crave sugary foods. This is the response you want. Your body is getting into a state of fat burning rather than using carbohydrates for energy. Fight the urge to reach for the biscuits. As your insulin levels begin to stabilise you will loose the urge for sweet foods.

If you are unaware of what foods to eat, do some simple research on-line or ask a fitness professional for some direction. You may be surprised. Most people think carbs are mainly breads, pasta etc. whereas if you actually look into your daily diet you might find hidden carbs in the form of biscuits, cakes, alcohol, fizzy drinks, pizza etc. Colourful fruit and vegetables (carrots, bananas, red peppers) also have a high carb content. Remember green is good! Broccoli, green peppers, kale, green beans etc. For this plan to work, drop ALL carbohydrates, increase protein content to 1½ times what you ate prior to the carb drop, increase good fats (olive oil, coconut oil) and eat platefuls of green vegetables. This will provide you with the nutrients needed for a healthy body. Finally, have a fantastic Christmas holiday, enjoy the festive season. We wish you and your family all the best for the New Year and we will be back in 2016 with more health and fitness information. Until then we can be contacted via the details below if you wish to make some life changing improvements to your health, fitness, mentality and motivation. * This diet is only suitable for a limited period of time and only for certain people - please check with your doctor first.

Glittering Sports Awards Highlights Talent at The Nottingham Emmanuel School A glittering sports awards ceremony has taken place at The Nottingham Emmanuel School highlighting a wealth of talent and dedication to sports amongst its students. Gareth Clarke, Head of PE at the school said that the awards ceremony is an excellent way to showcase the commitment that students have shown over the previous year. “I am thrilled to say that our 8th annual Sports Awards Evening was yet again a real success! Attended by over 200 of the school’s stakeholders including students, parents, staff, governors and local business associates, it was wonderful to come together to celebrate our sporting successes from last year at local, regional and national levels.” Guest speaker on the night was Tim Stevenson of ‘oneathlete’ which as a company works to give disabled athletes ‘access to an integrated sports performance team’. Tim has worked with many household names including Richard Whitehead, Charlotte Henshaw and Ollie Hynd and in his speech talked about overcoming obstacles to achieve your goals. One family proved on the night that talent can run in families as Natasha Hudson and her sister Olivia were recognised for numerous awards. Natasha was particularly pleased to be awarded the Sports Personality of the Year Award and said that her family attended the evening. “Both my parents and Nan are here tonight with my sister. I am really happy with my awards; it means that all of my hard work has been worth it.” When asked for her family’s reaction Natasha said they were happy for her, “But my Nan is always proud!”

He has over 18 years experience and I back him up with 25 years experience so we both have lots of advice to give. A free starter evening is offered to everyone who attends so that they can see if what we provide is what they are looking for. Classes take place between 7.30pm and 9pm every Thursday night except for two weeks over Christmas and New Year. Please contact me via email at alanparr@ waitrose.com for further information.

pets So Many Kittens!

Fosterers Urgently Needed It’s raining cats and ... kittens! Local charity, Animal Accident Rescue Unit, is appealing for help after more than twenty kittens recently came into its care. In total, twenty one kittens have been rescued, of which only three of the seven litters were with mothers. This figure is in addition to kittens already ready for adoption on the charity’s website – and an expectant mum, currently in foster, due to give birth imminently. As Crystal Moore, Cat Welfare Volunteer for Animal Accident Rescue Unit, explains: ‘With more kittens and those with mums arriving daily, we urgently need help fostering them until they are homed. Fostering is rewarding - nothing beats the pride you feel when seeing them thriving in their new homes.’ The hazardous situations these kittens were thankfully rescued from include: • Mali, only a year old, found in a sealed box outside a police station; within hours she gave birth to five kittens. • A mum aged seven months, with four kittens, discovered by a gentle Staffordshire Terrier underneath a hedge. • Three kittens in a disused, rubbish-filled outhouse with their mother – who is currently being treated by a vet. • Two kittens on a flat roof by a car park – their mother had not been seen for some time. • One tiny kitten found alone. If you would like to help by fostering, the charity would love to hear from you by email at admin@aaru.org.uk, or call Victoria in Recruitment on 07919 576479. The charity’s main telephone number is 0115-9321555, and website is www. animalaccident.org.uk.

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team.... Those of us who feel that Christmas should kept under wraps until at least December still can’t bury our head in the sand when it comes to home security. For many households, Christmas means an influx of new and sometimes expensive items and gadgets in our homes. While we all know that, burglars know it too. Nottingham has experienced a sharp decline in burglary over the past year, due to a renewed focus by Nottinghamshire Police on targeting and managing offenders and raising awareness of home and personal security . Yet, however much we do, all that good work can be undone if simple security steps that each of us can take in our own homes aren’t taken. Christmas presents many reasons for leaving the house to celebrate the festivities with friends and family, and there’s such a lot to think about – buying gifts and food, getting to see loved ones, work – so it is natural that some of the most simple things may get overlooked. Insecure windows and doors remain the single most common forms of entry for burglars. Whenever you leave the house,

always ensure that they are firmly closed and locked, ideally using a five-lever mortice lock. As for all the new gifts and goodies, well, there are things we need to remember to do with them too. Don’t put the presents around the tree until Christmas Eve night. It may be tradition to have the tantalising packages on display for children and visitors to marvel at, but, given that most of us have our trees on the ground floor, they are very visible to burglars too. Once Christmas morning is over and the wrapping paper is torn off, find time to take photos of the items, write down serial numbers and keep them away from prying eyes. Ensure they are not on display and kept upstairs if possible. Make sure keys – especially car keys – are concealed from view too. We don’t want to turn Christmas cheer into Christmas fear, but a few simple steps can certainly make sure it really is the season to be jolly.
