This sweet-natured cat has had a rough time, having been rescued by local charity, Animal Accident Rescue Unit with a painful tail injury. Thankfully after vet treatment, her tail healed but she has been waiting with her fosterer for a while now for a home, who highlights: ‘Sweetie loves fuss but on her own terms. She needs an experienced cat owner who respects this. She tolerates other cats but would be happier as the only cat in the home.’

business, IT & finance Communication Skills -

it’s not all about your CV by Helen Jones Time and time again we see candidates fall at the first hurdle when job searching – and not because of their previous experience or practical skills. It’s because at interview, when faced with face to face contact they simply cannot communicate efficiently and build rapport which is essential within most working environments. Good business still relies on building and maintaining effective relationships despite our growing reliance on computers and digital technology. The value of good personal communication can’t be underestimated. In a recent survey the following are the skills that most hiring/line managers would like to see in their employees: • Listening – pay close attention to what the other person is saying. This allows you to respond appropriately. Don’t pre-empt what you think is being said. Actively listen. • Body language – be aware that your hand gestures, eye contact etc. sends a strong message to the other person. If you are defensive and refuse direct eye contact you could be misconstrued as shifty or untrustworthy. Have a relaxed, genuine stance. • Empathy – Nobody can agree on everything 100% of the time but even if you disagree with an employer or work colleague it’s important for you to try and understand and respect their point of view. • Confidence – not the arrogant “It’s my way or no way” type of confidence but a confidence that demonstrates belief in your ability to do the job and follow through where required. A firm and friendly tone when dealing with others. • Being personal – use the other person’s name, maintain eye contact, be interested in what they have to say. All this will leave a positive impression long after the conversation/meeting is over. And finally…Thank You. The power of these two words is considerable. Thank people for their time, their efforts, their suggestions and their support. I defy any worker not to feel good when someone utters those two words to them. Be it senior management or a colleague. Good manners cost nothing as my grandmother used to say.

New volunteers needed! People in Nottinghamshire who have made a New Year’s resolution to volunteer could help transform the lives of thousands of girls and young women by joining Girlguiding. Girlguiding’s adult volunteers inspire and empower girls and young women across the UK, giving their time so girls can have adventures, make friends, build confidence and develop skills they will use throughout their lives. Over 70,000 girls nationally are waiting for a place at Girlguiding, including 1765 in Notts. Girlguiding Nottinghamshire offers a variety of flexible volunteering roles so people can find something that fits with the time they have to give, ranging from helping out at regular meetings or supporting weekend events to running occasional sessions with different groups. There’s also plenty of call for help ‘behind the scenes’ with tasks like unit admin and book-keeping. ‘I’ve been helping at Guides for about two years now, and have enjoyed every second!’ says Sophie Burton, 25, who is Assistant Leader with 1st Gedling Guide Unit. ‘After being a Brownie and a Guide myself, I returned to Guiding in order to give back the time which was given to me as a youngster. With the other leaders and helpers, we provide the support and guidance which enables our members to grow and become more confident individuals. An hour a week seems nothing when the girls have such fun with their friends away from school and home.’ Enquiries about volunteering with Girlguiding Nottinghamshire are always welcome: call 0115 987 7220, e-mail County Commissioner Jackie Brocklehurst at countycommissioner@ girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk or visit www.girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk

#noplaceforhate debate

Students at The Nottingham Emmanuel School welcomed a number of visitors into school for a debate called #noplaceforhate which explored the impact of prejudice and intolerance in today’s society. The event was organised by teacher, Alice Carlisle (PSHE and Citizenship Coordinator). “We wanted our young people to explore some highly controversial topics in a safe space, supported by experts, in a carefully planned, thought provoking series of workshops. The students had the opportunity to learn about hate crime, islamophobia, extremism, terrorism, radicalisation and prejudice during the event. They were encouraged to speak openly and ask questions, whilst taking care not to offend anyone. “We heard many personal stories throughout the day from the visitors and students, some which were not always easy to listen to, but which helped us all develop a deeper understanding of the underlying issues and impact on people’s lives. The spirit of the day was captured well by one student who said, ‘Our generation should be educated about things like this in order to create a peaceful, tolerant society’. This is something we are committed to as a school and we hope to have more events like this in the future.” Lee Scondis, of ‘Hope not hate’ charity says students need to develop a sense of critical thinking when responding to stories in the media. Colleague Owen Jones says he hopes students will take away an understanding of how to differentiate between news sources. Bilal Hussain from Nottingham-Citizens has high hopes for the future through workshops and discussions tackling these issues.

DISCOVERING GENIUS IN CHILDREN “Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.”– Plato

A

s a teacher and creative writer, I often feel that the modern world is still catching up to Plato. The genius he speaks of in the quote above is something I have witnessed. To see it is life changing. It brings a new level of respect for the child. Looking at the ideas of children this way helps us to see their innate genius; being aware of the many types of intelligence is the next step. Each child has their own unique blend of intelligence types. They may show a strong specialism in one

area or be a “general” - showing broad skill in many areas. If we were all brilliant at mathematics, but no-one could build a house, we’d soon be in trouble as a species. As a child plays, their brain is wiring itself, developing and specializing, thus it is through playfulness that genius emerges. By engaging in creative play with our kids, and by understanding the many forms genius can take, we help them to develop into confident, creative and happy adults.

The Monster Mash “ROAR!” Dad jumps out from behind the garden wall, arms raised with eyes as bright as birthday cake candles. Alex takes a step backwards, his mouth falling open; then he giggles. Beneath what looks like green mashed potato, Dad has a monster snarl-smile. Then, with a chuckle, his hands start to wave about as he speaks. “Thing is, Alex, I’m writing a monster story and I need to get in character, you know, see things from the monster’s perspective. Tell me, was I scary?”

monster masks! Do you want to make one too?”

Alex giggles again, “Um, a bit. Maybe jump a bit more?”

Fingers wigglin,’ Go a ticklin,’

“Yeah,” says Dad, “you’re right. Do you think I need claws?”

I’m gonna tickle you!

Alex jumps on the spot, grinning; “And fangs. You need fangs. Pointy and sharp.” Dad nods as if he is hearing wise advice, his gooey green face is a picture of thought. “And,” Alex continues, ”our teacher says you have to know what your character wants. So, what does the monster want?” “Oh, that’s easy,” says Dad, “the monster wants to win a monster competition. He has to be the scariest monster in monster-land. If he loses he has to be nice to everyone and, for a monster, that’s kinda rough. So, do you want to help me make fangs?” “Oh, yes please,” says Alex, “or a paper mache mask!” “Great idea,” says Dad, cleaning the potato from his face. “Let’s make

“Yeah!” says Alex, nodding quickly, “but I want mine to be red and you have to call me, ‘Blarg The Bloody.’ You can be, ‘Achoo the Boogeyman.’” Dad laughs, “I get to be ‘Achoo the Bogeyman’, do I? Because I hear that Bogeymen are all expert ticklers. In fact, they are the best.” Dad raises his two tickling fingers and begins ‘The Tickle Song’ in his best monster voice, Ribs, arms, bellies too! Alex screams and runs; Dad jogs behind him, fingers wiggling, smile wide. Their laughter blends like an old familiar tune, as natural as the birdsong, and the last crumbs of green mashed potato mark their trail.

kids Nottingham Emmanuel School Raises £457 for Children’s Hospital

Students at The Nottingham Emmanuel School have presented a cheque to the Nottingham Children’s Hospital for £457.93 after holding a rowing fundraising event. Joseph Irons, Teacher of PE & Sixth Form Achievement and Pastoral Manager, said that the charity was chosen by the Sixth Form students for this year’s fundraising efforts. “Our Sixth Form students chose to support the Nottingham Children’s Hospital ‘Big Appeal’, specifically fundraising for Ward E39, the children’s cancer unit at the Queens Medical Centre. Patients on this ward can often stay for months at a time and we wanted to help create a ‘home-fromhome’ environment for the children and their families.” The money was raised during a Sixth Form race where each tutor group on their own rowing machine raced to see which team could row the furthest in 20 minutes, each student changing over when they felt too tired to continue. Sian Griffiths is a fundraiser at the Nottingham Hospital Charity and she visited the school to thank students. “The students at The Nottingham Emmanuel School have done a fantastic job and I am always excited to come back and hear of the new ways they are raising money for us. I think their rowing challenge was a fantastic idea!”

Year 9 Basketball Team are County Champions!

Nottingham Emmanuel School is celebrating its Year 9 Basketball team, as they bring home the County Basketball Championship title. Team coach, Mr. Greg Jackson (Senior Achievement & Pastoral Manager), said that he had to hide his nerves from his team at the final held at Nottingham Trent University. “This was the team’s third attempt at winning the County Championships. They came so close to winning at the previous two finals and that’s why I am especially pleased for every single member of the team. “They gave everything in this tournament and deserve all the success they have achieved over a number of years now. Added to their undoubted talent, they are a great bunch of lads who love playing basketball, and always display a real pride in representing their school.” The team will now go on to represent Nottinghamshire in the East Midlands Regional Finals. Members of the triumphant team were: Morgan Pitter, Reece Jackson, Tovimba Mhazo, Mharco Ngo, McKinley Chambers, Sean Zimmaestro, Jordan Harrop and Oluwole Awotunde.

THE DEADLIFT I would like to talk about the deadlift or as it is fondly known...the dreaded deadlift. Most people stay well away from this fundamental exercise, and why is that? The most common reason is “it gives me a bad back.”

Technical key points for the deadlift

Many years ago, that was my excuse, but now it’s my go to exercise for development. It isn’t about the lift, it isn’t the lift that’s causing your issues… it’s you!

• Bar should be set to correct height (height of a calibrated plate or roughly a third way up your shin)

Let me explain a little. The deadlift is probably the most important lift within any training programme.

• Conventional (not sumo) deadlift stance is just inside shoulder width

• It strengthens bone density

• As you look down, the bar should be inline with the balls of your feet

• It improves full body strength • It mobilises the full body in correct form • It can be used in high or low volume training to produce a specific outcome • It triggers hormone stimulation So why do people avoid this exercise? Simply put…. Your SI joint (sacroiliac joint) which is the first junction in the lower spine. This is the area most say ‘I slipped a disk doing deadlifts’. This is not the case. The twinge you may have felt would be from poor mobility and poor form, compressing on one side of your vertebrae, trapping a nerve. A visit to an osteopath and a click and a crack usually resolves this issue, but then you stay clear of deadlifting yet again. At Strength and Physique we say challenge yourself, don’t let fear of deadlifts hold you back. Here’s how to improve your lift: • Warm up well before stretching

• Your grip should be narrow but wide enough for clearance for your elbows to pass your knees WITH STRAIGHT ARMS • Your grip, NEUTRAL or ALTERNATE, will depend on grip strength, alternate is stronger • As you bend to grip the bar your hips should be just above knee height and you should feel hamstring engagement as you take the load through your heels • Before you pull, your spine should be straight (while holding all these other key points in place) and your shoulder blades drawn together and down lifting your chest • Head should be in a neutral position • And lastly before you pull, lock in your lats OR imagine bending the bar around your shins • Once all these are in place take a big breath, tighten your abs and hold until you complete 1 rep driving downward instead of pulling upwards, driving your hips towards the bar

• Stretch and mobilise your full body, YES especially your hip rotation and hamstrings

NOW execute the lift with great form.

• DO NOT go heavy in your first lift, this is to programme the body after stretching in how it should move throughout the lift

If you would like more information on deadlifting, head over to our Instagram page where you’ll find our Youtube channel for further information on key points for form with exercise.

• Progressively increase the weight, staying within your capability • Follow the technical pointers opposite before you even lift the bar

Is it an orangery... or a conservatory? “What’s the difference between a conservatory and an orangery?” is a question we’re often asked, yet still find devilishly difficult to answer.

perhaps just a touch more substantial and elegant, and a conservatory more generally affordable.

Back in the 17th Century, when orangeries first saw the light of day, it was more straightforward. Because conservatories hadn’t yet been invented. The orangery was a newfangled European idea for keeping wealthy homeowners’ citrus trees alive through the winter months... hence the name. I guess we’re quite fortunate that oranges and lemons were more popular than pomegranates at the time – it’s pretty hard to imagine the ‘pomegranatery’ catching on in quite the same, trip-off-thetongue way!

The difference is clear as mud! If you’d like to find out more, view our gallery pages at www. klg.co.uk, phone 0115 9221155 or visit our showrooms at The Mill, Queens Road East in Beeston NG9 2FD or Rutland House, Nottingham Road in Ilkeston DE7 5BB.

Orangeries were actually designed to be warm as much as bright, whereas the less expensive conservatories they later inspired were thought of rather more as palaces of light for delicate shrubs and bushes. But the differences are becoming fewer and fewer as time goes on. Orangeries traditionally had more structural brickwork than conservatories, which had fullglass roofs and, indeed, more glass all over. However the characteristic ‘lantern’ roof of the orangery has now expanded so much as to be virtually indistinguishable from many conservatory roofs. And at KLG Rutland we’ve taken this evolution a stage further with the ‘orangette’ – an orangery with a virtually fully glazed roof. If you really want to differentiate between the two, you could describe the orangery – with its brickwork base, pillars and parapet-style roof - as a more extravagant bridging of the gap between a full-blown single-storey home extension and the uPVC-framed, 80% glazed, dwarf-walled conservatory. Bear in mind, too, that an orangery will generally be considered a permanent extension and, as such, more likely to require planning permission, whereas most conservatories don’t. But, of course, they don’t all fit neatly into those categories! What we can say for certain is that either provides wonderful, additional, light and airy living space to your home. Both will certainly add value to your property, with an orangery

Forty-something follicle fallout W

arning! Mid-life crisis incoming. I may well be a hop, step and a jump away from splashing the cash on a flash ride, squeezing myself into skinny jeans and disappearing over the horizon. Or not. Probably not in fact. But I’m starting to get a little worried. The first signs of old age are edging in, no longer do I live with the unerring confidence of youth. Gone are the giddy days of immortality and making pacts with friends that we’ll die wearing Levi’s whilst listening to music that’s still relevant. What’s caused this you ask? Well, I’m facing up to the fact that my hairline is no longer what it was. I was more than happy to go grey, after all a little salt and pepper in the hair is fine by me, but it’s really starting to go on the top. My daughter is an honest critic who now refers to the “hole on the top of my head”. My barber recently quipped that he may not be seeing much of me in the future. “Less than you think sunshine” was my immediate response to the impudent pup. So what to do? Bite the bullet and take early action, or watch for the slow disappearance of hair like some glacial movement only to wake up one day and realise it’s all gone? Fortunately there are plenty of options (and role models). Yul Brynner, Bruce Willis, Patrick Stewart and Jason Statham have all pulled off the buzzcut/bare noggin with masterful success. Though they are all A-list film stars this is still an achievable option, even for a middle-aged dad from Woodthorpe. On the other hand, you don’t have to look far for what happens when you leave the situation unchecked. Rab C Nesbit springs to mind, as does being distracted by the island of hair clinging to Steve McClaren’s forehead whenever I see him interviewed. I’ll forgive Bobby Charlton because he’s a living legend and somehow got away with it.

So I have to face it, the days of walking in slow motion through a stiff breeze with a bouffant fringe dancing in the wind are behind me (I’m more worried my remaining hair may take flight). There are fewer options when I go to the barbers and I’ve learnt to silently hate the pictures of hair models sporting pompadours and other luxurious hairstyles. But on the other hand, it’s quite liberating. I’m not a fan of having too much choice so nature is taking all the distraction away from me. I’m going bald at the back and receding at the front so I can’t deny it any longer. And as the youngest in my family my sisters are delighted that their little brother is losing his hair. And, being sisters, they hardly ever point it out in public. Ever. So I think I’ve made my choice, keep the hair super short (within reason). I’m not sure I want to get rid of all of it but I’d rather keep it neat. I’ve seen too many aging rockers who are clinging to the concept of long hair whilst losing it all on top. That’s not a look anyone needs, it’s akin to a badly maintained mullet (which isn’t easy considering the utter contempt I have for mullets). In fact, most recently it appears that Prince William himself has been having the very same issue as me and has reached similar conclusions. Maybe I should follow his lead? All I need is a spare £150 for a haircut.

Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

eview: 12 Strong R Ar ms Brothers in In these politically charged times, war is a complex and multifaceted phenomenan. And so cinematic portrayals can be just as precarious, especially when the story is true. Is Thor actor Chris Hemsworth up to the challenge? Let’s find out. 12 Strong is set just after the horrific events of 9/11 and Americans country are fired up to protect and serve their country. None more so than Captain Mitch Nelson (Hemsworth) and his special forces squad, Task Force Dagger. They are immediately deployed to Afghanistan as the first American team in the country. Their mission is to link up with General Abdul Rashid Dostum (Navid Negahban) and help the Northern Alliance to fight back against the Taliban. The most striking and refreshing aspect of this film is its handling of the Afghanistan war. No aspect of the war is romanticised. From the effect that being a soldier has on a family, to the adrenaline-fueled action, everything here feels grounded. Fights happen because they have to, not because anyone wants them to. And when bullets do start ripping through the sky, you feel it, intensely. The close quarter shots make you feel like you are on the ground right next to those brave soldiers, and the grand landscapes being barraged by fire reminds you of the dauntingly dangerous scale of armed conflict. It’s not just the battles that grip you in this story of modern warfare. It’s the strength of the characters, their bonds as brothers in arms, and the spectacular acting that gets your undivided attention. Hemsworth does a stunning job as the inexperienced but smart and driven captain of Task Force Dagger. While Michael Shannon as Hal Spencer is slightly underused, his presence as Nelson’s older, wiser, right hand man gives the two a great

dynamic on the battlefield and gave the film a great dose of heart. And Navid Negahban as General Dostum gave a perspective in this film that is often overlooked or ignored. The intense circumstances of his and Nelson’s growing friendship is a well written and hopeful narrative that shows what can happen when we put our differences aside and work toward one goal together. Overall, 12 Strong is a deliberate and brutally honest look into the opening days of the war in Afghanistan. With a poignant final message, 12 Strong is a surprisingly candid window into a world we should all know more about. 12 Strong = 8/10 © Sam Burton (aged 20)

TAROSCOPES Air signs- Libra, Aquarius, Gemini

Earth signs- Capricorn, Virgo, Taurus

(Ten of Swords, Justice, Queen of Cups)

(Temperance, Five of Swords, Ace of Cups)

Feel the weight lifted as you walk away, for good.

Let go of the old to make room for the new, and find a new balance.

Something needs to end, because it has become pointless / hurtful / a burden. Recognise this, and walk away with your head high and everything left in as good a place as you can. Look after your own side of the street, and let karma take care of everything else. No grudges or backlash, just clean and much-needed closure. You’ll feel so much better afterwards.

Fire signs- Leo, Aries, Sagittarius

Things feel a little out of kilter; too much of one thing, not enough of another. Redress the balances in your life by consciously and deliberately cutting losses in some areas, and renewing commitments in others. A little ‘jiggle about’ is necessary to make you feel steady and on the even keel you need in life.

Water signs- Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio

(Three of Cups, Queen of Cups, Four of Wands)

(Five of Wands, Ace of Coins, Four of Coins)

It’s time for celebrations and rewards, for all of your graft!

Be more discerning about how you invest your time and energy.

A lovely month of partying, socialising and celebrating lies ahead- if you make the arrangements. What is the point of working so hard if you don’t sit back to recognise and reward your efforts? Take a ‘time out’ to do so, and refuel your ambitions for the next burst of activity. Romance looks likely, and lively!, this month.

You feel the urge to make a new start, possibly in work or an area of life you invest a lot of energy in. It’s overdue, but don’t let that rush you into a hasty move. Be discerning about your next choice and where you invest your valuable time. Take the lessons from what’s happened, identify what you don’t want more of, and maneuvere yourself accordingly.

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team.... What is fraud? Fraud is when trickery is used to gain a dishonest advantage, which is often financial, over another person. It can refer to a business or individual. It is also increasingly linked to cyber crime.

Protect yourself against online fraud… Ensure your operating systems and software programs are kept up to date, antivirus software is installed and you have downloaded a tool to detect and remove malware.

Anyone can be a victim. Help prevent this by taking the following precautions:

Check the authenticity of a website before making any purchase by carrying out research into the company name, business address and reviews.

Protect yourself against coldcallers and bogus door-to-door sales Never hand out any bank or personal details to a third party, by phone or email. Genuine companies will not conduct business in this manner. If in doubt, hang up and ring the company on their main phone number. Turn away anyone offering financial proposals or anything that requires immediate signature or payment. The services bought will likely never materialise and scammers can utilise your signature. Shred receipts with your card details on, along with post with your name and address on. Identity fraudsters don’t need much information in order to be able to clone your identity. Check credentials, including a permanent business address and a landline telephone number. The mobile phone numbers on a fraudster’s business card are often pay-as-you-go numbers which are virtually impossible to trace.

Stay up to date with the latest scams by checking the Action Fraud news feed. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. I think I have been a victim of fraud. What should I do? If you think you’ve been scammed, ripped off or conned, you should report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. Action Fraud is run by the National Fraud Authority and is a one-stop reporting centre which handles all reports of fraud in the UK. If you believe an individual is targeting vulnerable people in your community to con them, you should report it to us on 101. Also tell us if you know the offender or you know of suspicious fraudulent activity. For more information on crime prevention, please visit our website: h t t p : / / w w w. n o t t i n g h a m s h i r e . police.uk/advice or https://www. actionfraud.police.uk/

The Woodthorpe Singers choir was delighted to hand over a cheque for £1,000 to Gem’s Cash For Kids. All the money collected goes into the local area, defined as Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire & Derbyshire. This charity helps support children 0-18 who are disabled, disadvantaged or suffering from abuse or neglect. Our donation will make such a huge difference. The money was raised through ticket sales from our Christmas 2017 concert. We would like to thank all who attended for your support, it really has helped a great cause. Every performance is unique and we all look forward to seeing you and your family and friends at our forthcoming concert, St Mark Church, Woodthorpe on 12th May. ECMVC make the trip into Essex during the weekend of 5-7 May for two concerts. The trip is a return visit for ECMVC, following Braintree Male Voice Choir‛s visit to the East Midlands in 2016. The concerts will be performed in Coggeshall and Sudbury on the Saturday and Sunday evenings. The weekend will be the first public performances for ECMVC in 2018 and will be the first concerts of an extremely busy year ahead. Bingham and District Choral Society The great Verdi Requiem was once described as ‘an opera in ecclesiastical costume’ and this comment does capture something of the dramatic and theatrical nature of the work. It is also a joy to sing, as the Bingham and District Choral Society and the Mansfield Choral Society are discovering in their weekly rehearsals. The two choirs will join together to perform the Requiem at 7.30pm on Saturday 12th May 2018 in Southwell Minster, accompanied by the Nottingham Symphony Orchestra (complete with the unique Verdi drum and offstage trumpets!) and conducted by Guy Turner, Musical Director of BDCS. Early booking is recommended for this splendid concert. Tickets cost £15, £13, £9 or £5 for the under-16s and are available from Tim (0115 8780642), Bingham Library (01949 837905), Pen2Paper, 6 Main Street, Radcliffe-on-Trent (0115 9335810). Full details of the concert are also available at www. binghamchoral.org.uk.

CHILDREN’S LUNCH BOXES When I was a kid, a packed lunch was meat paste or marmite sandwiches on white sliced, a packet of crisps and a KitKat. To be fair, it doesn’t seem to have done me any harm, but these days we all strive for something a bit more interesting, and a lot healthier, to tempt our kids to eat a nutritious packed lunch. Inspiring ideas can be a bit of a challenge and it is tempting to revert to shop-bought, ready-made options that are high in fat, salt and sugar, but with half of all kids now taking a packed lunch to school it is clear that they make up an important part of a child’s nutrition and so it is worth putting a bit of thought into what goes into their “pack up”. Keep your lunchbox choices fresh, varied, tasty, low in fat, salt and sugar but most of all interesting. If your child is picky, fussy or, let’s face it, just a little monkey when it comes to their packed lunch, try the following tips:-

• Involve them in planning and preparing what goes into their lunchbox. • If they are fussy eaters, stick to a few items and gradually add new ones over time. • If they don’t like wholemeal bread (as many don’t) try adding fibre from beans or brown rice. • Offer some cheese, or yoghurt for extra calcium and some frozen berries or grapes (they will defrost before lunch but help to keep everything cold). • Stick with water to drink rather than sugary drinks and always provide some fresh veg in the form of carrot sticks or similar. You might also offer a hard-boiled egg, perhaps with a smiley face or a funny message such as “eat me” on it. • Add a healthy homemade banana and blueberry muffin, or a small piece of dark chocolate for a sweet treat to finish of the meal. Here are a few more suggestions for making your kid’s lunchbox a bit more interesting (all ingredients are approximate depending on how hungry your little ones get!)

Cut-Out Sandwiches Serve your usual sandwiches but with a twist. Ingredients White Sliced Bread Brown Sliced Bread Sandwich fillings of choice Use a healthy, nutritious sandwich filling, such as cucumber and tuna, cream cheese and celery (thinly sliced) or cheese and tomato. Remove a shape from the centre of each slice using a cookie cutter and replace in the alternative white or brown slice. Simple and fun!

Cheesy Quesadilla with Tuna Mayo Pitta a Rainbow Salad Ingredients 1 Tortilla Wrap Cheddar cheese (grated) Spring onions (finely sliced) Mixed bean salad (tin, drained) Yellow pepper (chopped) Cherry tomatoes (halved) Carrot (finely sliced) Cut the tortilla wrap in half. Top one half with the grated cheese and the spring onion slices. Place the other half on top. Heat for about 1 minute each side in a non-stick frying pan until lightly browned. Remove from heat, allow to cool and cut into half or quarters (depending on the size of your wraps). Wrap in foil and place in lunch-box. For the salad, drain the bean salad, mix with the chopped pepper, tomatoes and carrot, place in a separate sealed container. (You can season with a little olive oil, salt and pepper if desired).

Ingredients Tuna chunks in spring water (drained) 2 tbsp sweetcorn (drained) Light mayonnaise to mix 1 wholemeal pitta Shredded lettuce (I used hot-house, but iceberg gives some added crunch) Mix the drained tuna with the sweetcorn and mayonnaise (add a little salt and pepper if you wish). Halve the pitta, lightly toast and allow to cool. Divide the tuna mix between them, add the shredded lettuce. Wrap in foil and add to lunchbox. Serve a portion of mixed fruit in a separate container on the side.

A Tale of Two Gussets! It could have been due to a hormonal imbalance (women of a certain age will know what I mean). Or maybe the need to feel, well, needed. With two teenage boys who rarely make an appearance downstairs these days, the living room had started to feel a bit empty. Whatever the reason, after managing to get through over fifty years pooch free, I have now acquired two within the space of a couple of years. They say second born children tend to be a bit of a nightmare - and I can vouch for that! However I wasn’t warned that second adopted dogs would be the same. Too late now. Herbie has arrived and is here to stay! It appears this cute rescue puppy is half dog and half mountain goat. Managing to scale work surfaces that no normal dog should be able to reach. And eating. Absolutely. Everything. In Sight. Coming home from work feeling pretty pleased with myself for having the dinner already cooked I was met with the devastating news that Herbie had eaten the whole lot. Chippy supper it was then. My underwear drawer is not somewhere anyone needs to go, believe me. However Herbie decided that he quite liked the look of it. I am now the proud owner of some interesting garments. Two piece bra’s, footless socks and crotchless pants (not that sort!). M & S here I come! Gussets seem to be a particular favourite of this chewing machine. Cycling shorts offer a gourmet delight, softer and chewier than your basic pants, and at £175 a pair, more expensive than caviar. Thank goodness for Google. I found a company in Italy called Dr Pad (yes, really) that was able to

replace said gusset for a fraction of the price of new shorts. The new, even better shorts arrived safely back and lasted about 3 hours before, in a momentary lapse of vigilance, Herbie struck again! New gusset swiftly destroyed. Another email to Dr Pad, much hilarity from Italy and requests for photo’s of the now infamous puppy and the shorts are winging their way back to be repaired once more. Such is the popularity of young Herbie, that the lovely Serena at Dr Pad has offered to send “as a gift” a pile of defective pads for him to chew. I don’t know much about puppy training or dog psychology but I am guessing this would be a really bad move, encouraging a gusset fixation that could only end badly. So I politely declined the offer. Why not buy him chewing toys? I hear you shout. So far we have spent the price of a family hatchback on these toys. They last about an hour and then disappear - coming out the other end a day or so later, if you get my meaning. We have finally found a company called Mighty Mutts (thanks Dionne at Cuddles A Plenty) who guarantee their toys for three years! So far, so good. Toy still intact after 3 weeks. I will keep you posted... Meanwhile everything is locked up, shut away and raised 10 feet off the ground. I have to dash now as he has his whole front half immersed in the kitchen bin. Arghhhhhh. © Ali Wale

Tanya About Town T

hankfully the sparkles weren’t packed away with the Christmas decorations as Strictly Fever swept Nottingham during the first part of the year. Stars of the show past and present visited the Motorpoint Arena, whilst Anton and Erin dropped in on the Theatre Royal and Vincent and Flavia bought their Tango Moderno spectacular to the Royal Concert Hall. The 90-minute spectacular managed to pack in not only what shape tango is in today but what the UK’s dancing scene looks like, along with a lesson in relationships just in time for Valentines Day. Don’t put your dancing shoes away just yet as we have Remembering Fred at the Theatre Royal (29 April), Flashdance (7 May) and Kevin and Karen (30 May) still to come. If you’re a fan of the musicals then Cilla comes to town (3 -7 April) and Legally Blonde, based on the much-loved movie, follows (14 -19 May) and Sunset Boulevard (21 - 26 May) Fancy some nostalgia? Make sure you catch chart-topping duo Tears for Fears at the Arena (28 April) or if you prefer to see the stars of the future, then make sure you get yourself along to the Dot to Dot Festival taking place on 27 May. The Festival has continued to showcase the best new acts from around the world since starting in Nottingham more than a decade ago. Comedy is on the cards for the Spring as the Playhouse welcomes Joe Lycett (25 April) whilst Jon Richardson is down the road at the Royal Concert Hall (23 May) Speaking of Spring, make sure you get along to Hodstock Priory in Worksop. Walk the woodland paths and see the impressive display of Bluebells (28 April - 7 May) and

enjoy the great outdoors at Wellow on Bank Holiday Monday (28 May) with their Maypole celebrations. This unique event has its roots in the 19th century but has evolved over time to become one of Nottinghamshire’s largest one-day village festivals. Whilst we’re on the subject of history, Did you know that Nottingham has over 800 caves? Cave City: Nottingham Underground Festival takes place 11 -13 May. A celebration of our underground treasures, explore what lies beneath your very feet in a series of fun and intriguing events across the city, revealing Nottingham’s hidden landscape. Events will include talks and tours at some of the city’s lesser-known caves including The National Justice Museum, the Malt Cross and the lost caves at the Curious Tavern. Need some relaxation after all that activity? You can now join your tweenager at their own special spa evening at Ye Olde Bell in Retford. Exclusively for 11 - 16-year-olds you can both enjoy the facilities with fondue and fun guaranteed (4 April). University Life Survival Guide by Sam Burton

University is said to be one of the sure-fire ways of getting a job. On top of that, university is supposed to be the best time of your life. With so much pressure put on one period of time, here are some tips, personal experiences, and industry facts to help you do this whole uni-thing right.

Student Finance The first hurdle you will encounter is Student Finance, the government appointed student-support system that pays for your university education and depending on your household income (what your parents earn) will give you a maintenance loan to help pay for your rent and survive the days on something more than £1 noodles (not fun, trust me). The highest maintenance tier is for people with a household income of £25,000 or less a year. This could get you up to £8,200 for your maintenance loan. If you decide to live at home you will get around £1000 less. But this money isn’t free (sadly). You’ll pay 9% of earnings above a threshhold of £21,000 (fixed til 2021) back to the government monthly until your debt is repaid. Eg; if you earn £25,000 you will pay 9% of £4,000: £30 a month. This will be taken out like a tax. Applying for Student Finance can seem very confusing with a lot of forms to fill out, but don’t worry; the sign-up process is a guided one on their website and makes everything surprisingly simple. Just make sure you have a working printer for the posted forms and that your parents have their income details to hand.

Housing Once you have the money, you’ll be wanting to find a place to live. An important decision as this will be the place you work, eat, sleep, and finally get to relax in after a long day of absorbing lecture after lecture for a year. The three main types of accommodation are flats, houses, and studio apartments. The average rent of a flat is £155.90 per week*. For a house it is £141.60 per week*. And for studios it is £222.70 per week*. I spent my first year in a student-flat with six other people. The first couple of months were super fun. It was daunting meeting so many new people at once, but everyone is in the same boat so the atmosphere is always welcoming. Not being much of a partyanimal though, the later months where the rest of the building were having a raging party were not as much fun. If that is your scene then you’ll feel right at home, but if you’re a bit more introverted like me, this may be an important factor to consider. For my second year I lived in a studio apartment where my living room, kitchen, and bedroom were all the same room. The independence and freedom a studio apartment gives is amazing. Being able to have my friends over whenever in this spacious zone that turned into our own personal gaming room and make-shift cinema made some of my favourite university memories.

Friends and Courses

Speaking of friends, they are the life-blood of any university experience. Being able to purely study what you want puts you into contact with like-minded people who all have the same overwhelming passion and being in that atmosphere is an electric feeling. Plus being able to just study what you want is a revelation in itself. That combined with the strong bonds forged through trying to hit an assignment’s deadline is an almost guaranteed winning combination.

No matter what, university is definitely an unforgettable time. So good luck and remember, even when you have five deadlines on the same week and the guy in the room next to you won’t stop blaring out the worst music imaginable, take moments for yourself and above all, have fun. *Averages worked out by taking the rent for the top 10 properties on an estate agent’s site in Sheffield on the time of writing and finding the mean.

WHAT’S NEW AT WEST MIDLAND SAFARI PARK IN 2018?

will be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of parts of the set used in the movie inside the ‘Early Man Secret Cave’, which will be at the Park until Easter.

Staff at West Midland Safari Park are preparing for their best year yet, as the attraction prepares to celebrate its 45th year.

Celebrating their first birthdays, guests can see how much the gorgeous babies of 2017 have grown during the past year. Fennessy the Rothschild’s giraffe is now a staggering 10-feettall and is showing no signs of slowing down! Also on the Safari Drive-through is beautiful baby Fahari, the second southern white rhino born at the Park within two years. Full of confidence and charisma, the healthy youngsters have been a great success for the longevity of both species, whose numbers are dramatically dropping in the wild.

The busy schedule for 2018 includes celebrating the birthdays of animals born last year, an education partnership with art exhibit Worcester Stands Tall and the opening of their brand new prehistoric exhibit - Ice Age - which is due to arrive in Spring. Continuing the journey from The Land of the Living Dinosaurs exhibit, the £1 million project will feature a huge volcano, ice cave and ferocious, life-sized animals, taking guests on an interactive exploration through time. Adventurers will be able to walk amongst a gigantic woolly mammoth, a fierce smilodon and an enormous paracatherium, to name just a few. As well as the brand new exhibit, the Park is also the official Education Partner for Worcester Stands Tall - a public art exhibition of decorated giraffe sculptures due to be dotted around the streets of Worcester during the summer of 2018. The event, facilitated by Wild In Art and brought to the city by St Richard’s Hospice, will enable local schools and renowned artists to design and decorate the sculptures. Larger sculptures will eventually be auctioned off to raise money for the hospice.

West Midlands Safari Park is now open daily for its summer season. Standard admission charge is £24.00 for adults, £19.00 for children aged 3-15 and £22.00 for concessions. Admission includes a Free Return Ticket. Adventure Theme Park rides are charged extra. Further information and tickets are available from the Park’s website www.wmsp.co.uk or by telephone 01299 402114. You can find out more on the Safari Park’s official Facebook page: www.facebook.com/WestMidSafari. You can follow the progress of the baby rhino on the Safari Park’s official Facebook page: www.wmsp.co.uk/facebook

The Park has also teamed up with Award-winning studio Aardman for their prehistoric comedy movie, Early Man. Fans of the film

a helping hand New Drivers Join Voluntary Transport Scheme

Rushcliffe Befriends -

Local Help for Local People Loneliness can be a big problem. We know that feeling alone can take its toll. It can result in increased anxiety, depression and stress along with loss of confidence and self-esteem.

Six new drivers are revving up, eager to take new passengers out and about in Rushcliffe. Rushcliffe Voluntary Transport Scheme has been providing community transport for over 30 years using voluntary drivers who love helping people get out and about. Carolyn Perry, chief executive of Rushcliffe CVS, explains: “We’re looking for new customers who are keen or need to go out. All our passengers benefit from socialising which helps prevent loneliness, fosters independence and enables them to maintain their dignity and respect. The service also helps ease the pressure on health and social care.” Passengers are elderly, or people with disabilities, and the service helps them get out for health appointments, shopping or social activities. The Voluntary Transport Scheme covers two areas – the Boroughs of Rushcliffe and Gedling - and provides safe, affordable and reliable journeys to people who find it difficult to use public transport or taxis, who don’t drive and don’t have access to a car. With an ageing population, older people can find themselves unable to drive, fearful or incapable of using public transport or taxis and their family may well work and be unable to provide transport. Rushcliffe Voluntary Transport fills this much-needed gap improving the passengers’ quality of life.

Social inclusion can make a fundamental difference. Rushcliffe Community and Voluntary Service invite you to contact their Befriending Scheme. The scheme aims to support isolated people aged 50+ who live in Rushcliffe. It has been set up through funding provided by The National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund and is designed to help provide that vital social contact that many people are missing. Volunteer befriender Meg has been volunteering for two years and has supported four people, helping them gain connections in the community. “Giving people hope for a brighter future is such a pleasure”. To volunteer you just need to be aged 50+ and living in Rushcliffe. A caring attitude is also essential. User of the service, 87 year old Maggie, had become isolated after losing her husband. She longed for some company and someone to talk to. Since becoming involved Maggie says “I feel happy when I spend time with my volunteer, it breaks up the time I spend alone”. Interested in becoming a volunteer or a user of the service? More information is available from Holly on 0115 9699 060 or by emailing hromanowski@rushcliffecvs.org.uk
