Finally the days are getting longer and we can start looking forward to Spring. Daffodils, cute little lambs and Easter eggs... we had a giggle at Dom Murray’s article on the whole Easter chocolate conundrum. Struggling for ideas for dinner? Just grab a pack of sausages and pick one of the recipes in this edition - they’re all delicious. Among the competitions this month we have family passes to West Midlands Safari Park and Red Kangaroo, a £100 voucher for a meal at Masala Junction and some fantastic theatre tickets up for grabs. Good Luck!

When rescued by Animal Accident Rescue Unit a year ago, five-year old Choo had health problems due to his rough start in life, but thankfully these conditions were swiftly fixed. Since then he has enjoyed life with his fosterer who says: ‘Choo loves attention so it’s such a pity nobody, all this time, has shown interest in sharing a home with him.’ As with all the charity’s cats, Choo is microchipped, flea and worm treated, littertrained plus vaccinated – his new owner is responsible for further vaccinations.

All the charity’s cats are microchipped, flea and worm treated, FIV tested (Choo is clear) and vaccinated for the first year - after which the new owner has responsibility. To arrange to meet Choo, or find out more about him, either email admin@aaru.org.uk, or call 0115-9321555, and leave a message with your contact details. The volunteer coordinator will return your call as promptly as possible. The rescue does not rehome cats near or on busy roads, apart from indoor cats. All other animals already rescued by the charity, still waiting for permanent homes are at www.animalaccident.org.uk, and at ‘Animal Accident Rescue Unit’ on Facebook.

Walks With Emily & Friends Cotgrave Circular Walk Walk distance: 3.2 miles Difficulty: Easy Starting point: Church Lane, Cotgrave (free on street parking)
here. Please note this is a busy road so be careful when crossing. Continue along the towpath until you see the sign for Cotgrave Country Park on the right and follow this. Keep going as the path bends round and goes past a pond on the left. Follow this round to the other side and go up and over a small hill and down some steps on the other side. Here you will reach a well-trodden path, turn right and pass through a wooded area. At the end the path turns left behind some houses, and then right again through a small alley to Mill Lane. When you are back in the housing estate, go down Mill Lane to Main Road, turn right and follow this road back to Church Lane, which will be on your right.
This circular walk starts in Cotgrave village and makes its way along the Grantham Canal and Cotgrave Country Park. Grantham Canal runs for 33 miles and was primarily built for the transportation of coal to Grantham in the 1700s. For this walk, park down Church Lane – a cul-desac where you will find plenty of on road parking. From here, follow the footpath sign towards Tollerton. Follow it to the right through a field and turn immediately left. Keep following the path until you join a leafy lined alley.
To download the Ordnance Survey map route, and for more dog walks around the Nottinghamshire area and beyond: visit www.greatbritishdogwalks.com Follow us on social media for updates: Facebook: @greatbritishdogwalks Instagram: @greatbritishdogwalks Twitter: @gbdogwalks
Turn right here and follow it to the end, cutting through a hedge onto another field. Cut across the field corner until you reach a road, and here turn right. The sewerage works will be on your right. Carry on down this road until you reach an equestrian farm. Pass through a gate and follow the path past a small-holding on the right. Then cross the farm lane into the next field. Go through the gap in the hedge and head directly across this field (Tollerton Airfield will be on your left). Eventually you will reach an opening onto the Grantham Canal towpath, turn right here and carry along the tow path. Keep following this path passing the Lock Keepers’ Cottage. Continue past the disused lock until you reach Cotgrave Road and cross

In it for the bunny! Easter. Depending when you’re reading this it’s either coming, happening, or has just gone. Whichever way you look at it, it started too early, has more build up than is strictly necessary, and is gone before you know it. I say this from a perspective of someone who isn’t religious, as I do understand that from a Christian perspective Easter is about much more than a day filled with chocolate eggs. And you could make a very good case for why so much of the celebration of this event is continued when a large amount of people who observe it have no religious interest in the event itself. But I digress (that seems far too serious a topic for this column). Whilst not being a follower of any religious group, I did grow up in a very religious household. So in that respect it annoys me when people say things like ‘what have chocolate eggs got to do with Easter’? In this day and age a Google search will answer that for you but bear with me. The egg has roots in paganism as a symbol of new life, and later on it’s believed that Christianity used it as a symbol of the resurrection of Jesus himself. Nowadays it’s used as a symbol by those evil, capitalist confectionery companies to prize our hard earned money from our wallets. Hang on, let’s get back on track! As noted by the biography opposite, I have children. Like all parents know, this means I have to observe all major festivals whether they personally impact me in any way or not. And Easter is no exception. I first noticed something was up when I watched a Cadbury’s Creme Egg advert in January. January! Give me a break. I still hadn’t spent my Christmas gift vouchers and now I’m meant to be preparing for Easter. I was so angry I decided to binge-eat Creme Eggs out of season as a protest. But the children, they’re clever. Their Christmas Lego sets are only just finished and they’re already lining up a list of chocolate treats they want from the family.
And they’re not shy about asking everyone. I think they have late night planning sessions under cover of darkness to establish which grandparent gets them what egg. I doubt D-Day was as well organised as my kids operational plan for total chocolate overload. Fortunately we know our kids pretty well (at least I think we do, sometimes they surprise the hell out of us) so we usually manage to keep a lid on eggmageddon. There’s not often been an Easter when we’ve had an overflow of sweets, normally it’s a sane amount. But it’s still more chocolate than I would consume in a matter of months. And not just the big eggs. There’s chocolate coins, mini eggs, sweet selections, Creme Eggs, Lindt bunnies, it never ends! So we let the kids eat some, give them their fill in the hope that it’ll sate the inhuman demand for constant chocolate. And then we hide them. That’s right, we hide our kids chocolate. Don’t judge us, we don’t do it out of cruelty. Nor is it a plan to eat all of the chocolate for ourselves. But there’s a point where no child needs to eat that much chocolate. So we make a big deal of breaking some of the eggs down into little bowls so the kids can have a little something most days, and we make the rest disappear. And here’s a tip for new parents: it also means they can’t tell when you sneak a bit for yourself when no-one’s looking (ie. at midnight when you have convinced yourself that you need a reward for the brisk walk you took to the shops earlier). But I don’t want to appear overly grumpy! Chance would be a fine thing, right? If you want to drop me a line to let me know how your Easter shapes up I’ll be here, eating my bodyweight in my children’s Easter eggs!
Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

REVISION
PREPARE...PLAN...PRACTICE
As the mum of a year 11, revision is a hot topic in our house at the moment. This is the time of year when many of us are either sitting exams, revising for exams or helping our children with exam preparation. Schools can be brilliant at helping their students with advice, extra lessons, revision aids and mocks, but at the end of the day they can’t sit those exams for us (shame!). Parents and young people all cope differently with the pressure of exams. As a parent the most important thing we can do is be there – whether that means working through flash cards or offering a cuppa.
Ali Wale
PREPARE
PLAN
PRACTICE
My son’s bedroom is a place of mystery and intrigue. Things go in and are never seen again. There are piles of leaflets, flash cards, revision booklets and random school work along with empty crisp packets, sweet wrappers and clothes that were ironed three weeks ago but have still not found their way to the wardrobe...
With exams looming, a bit of forward planning can really help ease any panic. Work back from the exam timetable and factor in out of school activities, then set realistic (you know your child) slots for revision. Agree them and stick to them. It’s easier said than done, I know, but it’s a start.
Sadly, there is no short cut to learning. It’s all about getting as much practice as possible in whatever way suits you. There are loads of great apps and websites to help with revision. For today’s young people who are IT and smart phone savvy this can be really helpful. We have used apps for long car journeys and they have been really effective.
My first piece of advice is to get sorted (unless you are lucky enough to have an organised young person). Preparation is key to good revision. We got some A4 file boxes, labelled up with subjects and then sorted all the odds and sods into the right box. Clear A5 zip bags from Amazon were brilliant for all the different flash cards. Even if he doesn’t do a scrap of revision – at least it’s all well organised and tidy!!
Short bursts are more effective then slogging away for hours. Everyone revises differently and each young person needs to do what feels right for them. I used to do hundreds of mock papers over and over. Some people prefer reading and repeating. There are hundreds of websites to help with techniques. My son favours the “I’ll do some later” school of revision. Extra lessons before, after and at lunchtime are brilliant for reluctant revisers – the school environment has no distractions and teachers are on hand to help.
BBC Bitesize, Seneca, Maths Watch and Quizlet are just a few great websites that spring to mind. They cover most subjects and exam boards. Revision books can also be a great resource. Written in a very student friendly way they often include model exam answers and practice questions. However, a word of warning, make sure you get the correct exam board and don’t waste your money if your child isn’t prepared to use them. I wasted a lot of money going down this route. Good luck to everyone and remember, give it your best shot then relax and enjoy a well earned summer break.

HOW TO FUEL YOUR FITNESS
To recover we need calories, we need fuel. By restricting this, you’ll be slowing progress. You will also feel awful for hours after exercise, while blood sugar levels are at their lowest.
Ever thought about how your diet is affecting your training?
We need a little protein and a little carbs/fat pretraining. This will set us up for a great session and also help us to perform at a higher level so we can rack up a higher calorie expenditure number. Ideally you want lower GI index carbs for slow release on energy to fuel your workout longer. For example, whole grain bread or porridge.
Diet is often an overlooked factor when planning your training. A common misunderstanding is that to be losing weight you need to deprive your body of what it needs. This could, and probably is, affecting how well you progress within your fitness goals. Some believe fasting before exercise improves results… the only thing it actually improves is how you feel during exercise. You’ll still burn the same number of calories and bodyfat whether you are fasted or fed. Feeding your body up to 60 minutes before exercise will improve ‘in session’ results and still counts towards your daily intake. You’ve just utilised the window before training to aid your output intensity. So, what about the window after training? This is where your energy levels will be at their lowest, again a common mistake is to think you shouldn’t feed the body after exercise or it will affect your results. Allow me to shine a little light here. Exercise is a stress induced by ourselves. We grow and gain in the recovery process (the resting phase).
Fuel pre and post exercise
Post-training, try to hit a good 20-30g of protein. We need this to start the repair process of damaged tissue. Now add in some carbs. After training a little of each, (high and low GI) is good. The high GI carb will raise blood sugar levels quickly therefore not leaving you feeling low and tired, the low GI carb will steadily release energy giving you an AWESOME post workout feeling. Sadi Meakin, aged 27, beat off stiff competition to secure selection for the Women’s Open Team. Held every four years, the Touch World Cup is the pinnacle of the international game and this year’s tournament will be the biggest yet. Sadi began playing touch rugby in 2010 and has already represented England at three European Championships and competed in the 2015 World Cup. Juggling touch rugby with her role as deputy leader of Hollies Day Nursery in West Bridgford, Sadi said “I feel very privileged to play for my country. This year has been very tough, as competition for places has grown massively. I love playing alongside the girls in the team and am excited to show everyone what we’ve got.” Drew Pike, the owner of Hollies Day Nurseries, who are sponsoring Sadi’s away kit, said “We are incredibly proud. Sadi is a fantastic role model at the nursery and proof of what can be achieved with tenacity and hard work”. The 2019 Touch World Cup will be held between 29th April and 4th May.

Yoga for Everyone Yoga is an Indian philosophy dating back thousands of years. The Sanskrit word yoga means unite and it was practised to create the union of the physical body, mind and spirit in order to reach enlightenment. Different paths of yoga were created in order to reach this state. One of these paths was called Hatha yoga and its purpose was to develop the body in preparation for further spiritual practice. These days, particularly in the west, we practice Hatha yoga. Classes largely focus on health and fitness but still with attention on how we feel in both our bodies and minds. This is achieved using physical exercises (asana), breathing exercises (pranayama), meditation and relaxation. Yoga is for everyone and the benefits are immense. It helps us to relax, release tension from our bodies and deal with stress. It is energy giving, makes us stronger and more supple. If you are looking for a class suitable for your needs, local publications and websites such as www.localyogaclasse.co.uk, list classes in your area. Power Up Your Morning Routine With Breakfast Breakfast: the most important meal of the day? Or, if you aren’t a morning person then it’s more like, breakfast: that thing you should get up 15 minutes earlier for, but pressing that snooze button twice more feels far more important.
What can
Whether you live for a big breakfast, or eat it in a hurry, there is a good case for making your first dish of the day a more nutritious one. Why should I bother with breakfast? Here is the confusing part...breakfast may not actually be the most important meal of the day. This popular marketing slogan was invented in 1944 to sell more cereal. In fact, originally John Harvey Kellogg intended cereal to be the breakfast choice, not only to improve the health of Americans, but also to keep them from desiring sex. Yes, yes, you are reading this right. Mr Kellogg was a deeply religious and completely celibate being. This isn’t the only reason you should be spitting out your cornflakes. It turns out, skipping breakfast doesn’t actually make you fat. Research studies conducted in Bath indicate that in terms of weight, eating breakfast or skipping it makes no difference. Where eating breakfast does come into its own, however, is in improving comprehension, daytime energy and mood. So unless you want to be moody, fatigued and lacking in intelligence then skipping breakfast is not a great idea.

What should you eat for breakfast? Like any other meal, breakfast is a good opportunity to top up on some important micro and macronutrients. There are three things we need in large amounts in our diets: protein, fats and carbohydrates, these are our macronutrients. In addition, vitamins and minerals are essential but in much smaller quantities. To get the best out of that morning meal, consuming a balanced breakfast is the best option. “Balanced” simply means, a meal that contains protein, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals in the correct quantities. In a nutshell, this doesn’t translate to cereal. To achieve this, protein is a great starting point but to truly hit all of the food groups of a balanced meal, just add vegetables. Vegetables are great sources of vitamins and minerals as well as carbohydrates. In “real life”, a balanced breakfast may look something like this: omelette with spinach, tomatoes and a slice of toast or a smoothie with protein powder, greens, flax seed and some frozen blueberries.

West Midland Safari Park has a funfilled year planned for its visitors,
including some exciting new events and the chance to meet the latest arrivals. From 16 February, the Park is once again open daily, for its main summer season. All of the attractions will be open, including the four-mile Safari Drive-through, Land of the Living Dinosaurs, Ice Age, African Village, Discovery Trail and the Adventure Theme Park. Additionally, the Park has a number of exciting events planned throughout the year, with something for all of the family. Guests can look forward to: Easter Eggstravaganza, Rhino Week during May half term, Summer Nights late night opening over the school summer holidays and Spooky Spectacular at the end of the season to celebrate Halloween. As well as the Park’s events, guests can come face-to-face with the newest arrivals at the Park – 2018’s babies! Endangered Grévys zebra foals Grace and Gamba, will be galloping around the reserves, running rings around their mums. Meanwhile Granville, the baby southern white rhino, born in September 2018, can be spotted charging around the African reserves, with Mum Ailsa, brother Ekozu and half-sister Fahari. There is also the chance to spot Gerald, the Rothschild’s giraffe calf. Born in October, the leggy youngster joined the herd of now ten giraffes, including his brother Fennessy and half-sister Emali. As well as the babies, there are many more animals to see both on the four-mile Safari Drive-through and on foot. From the
comfort of their own cars, guests can see lions, tigers, camels and elephants, to name but a few. There’s plenty to do on foot too, with the Park’s Discovery Trail and African Village, home to a number of amazing animals such as lemurs and lorikeets. Guests can step back in time in Land of the Living Dinosaurs, where they can walk amongst the magnificent creatures that once used to roam the earth. The new Ice Age exhibit is also home to a huge rumbling volcano and chilly ice cave, giving guests a multi-sensory experience and an insight into what it was like to be alive during this time. Located next to the African Village is Boj’s Giggly Park, a multisensory, interactive play area, perfect for younger guests. Finally, in the Adventure Theme Park, guests can purchase ride wristbands or tickets to enjoy a multitude of amusements and rides. West Midland Safari Park opens daily from 16 February 2019 for its summer season. Prices are yet to be confirmed but admission includes a Free Return Ticket. Adventure Theme Park wristbands are charged extra. Further information and discounted tickets are available from the Park’s website www.wmsp.co.uk or by telephone 01299 402114. MASALA j u n c t i o n AN ABSOLUTE GEM THAT WON'T BREAK THE BANK! After meeting Naj Aziz it's easy to see why he is so successful, he is charming, inspiring and very passionate about food. He even taught Kieran (my eldest son) some Indian food history! In Masala Junction, Naj Aziz, has produced yet another world class restaurant. With 25 years experience and award winning restaurants ‘The Indian’ and ‘MemSaab’ under his belt he just goes from strength to strength. In fact he has just won the Nottingham Bar & Restaurant Award for Best Independent Neighbourhood Venue 2019 and it's not hard to see why. Situated in the old Natwest bank on the junction between Mansfield Road and Hucknall Road in Carrington/Mapperley Park, the restaurant offers authentic Indian dishes in a building with both history and character. Naj bought the bank back in March 2015, and with the help of architect and sister in law Lyn Niblock-Aziz, he has transformed the building into the stunning restaurant it is today. Truly a family affair, Mr Aziz's brother is a partner in the venture, his niece designed all the graphics, his cousin is the manager and his nephew works front of house. The love and passion the family have for the restaurant filters down into everything they do. I visited on a Friday evening with three of my kids, although my 20 year old may argue he isn't a kid anymore! To start I had the onion bhajis (£5.25), my favourite and always a good indicator of how the rest of your meal will be. I wasn't disappointed, they were cooked to perfection, beautifully crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, delicious. The kids (sorry Kieran) shared the grilled kebab selection (for 2) made
up of chicken tikka, lamb chops and seekh kebab (£13.95 ). It was exquisitely presented with vibrant pickles, purees and a range of garnishes and was enjoyed by all. For mains the young ones went with their favourite, chicken korma, while Kieran and I were feeling a bit more adventurous. I went for the lamb rogan josh (£14.95) which was a delicious sauce packed with amazingly tender slow cooked lamb. Kieran had the junction goat ka salan (£14.95) which is a Masala Junction family recipe and left him wishing he was actually a part of their family. We accompanied our meal with a selection of rice and nan. All the food was superb and satisfying. We were stuffed to the max but still managed to polish off a couple of puddings between us. Lily chose the apple pie and I ordered the chocolate fondant which was divine and definitely passed my chocoholic taste buds test. All in all a fantastic evening. If you are looking for that wow factor then look no further than Masala Junction. It has it all.

Simply Sausages T
he word sausage originates from the Latin – salsus (salted) – as sausages used to be made from preserved or cured meat when there were no fridges or freezers. Sausages in some shape or form are popular across the world. The Germans are massive sausage eaters and in South America, Argentina and Uruguay consume loads of chorizo and morcilla (black pudding to you and me). Here in the UK we love a banger. So called because in World War II, with food shortages, sausages were so full of water that they used to explode when fried! In fact an adult meat-eater will eat an average of 2,771 sausages in a lifetime.
Sausages are versatile, cheap and come in hundreds of varieties. In our house, chorizo is a weekly staple. For a 20 minute meal, boil some pasta, mix in some pesto sauce, stir in some cooked chopped chorizo and cover with grated cheese. We also chuck it in macaroni cheese, omelettes and stews. If you have a pack of sausages in the freezer you will always have a meal in the making. Bangers and mash (try using swede or celeriac instead of potatoes), toad in the hole, full English or best of all the good old sausage sandwich. I like to pimp mine up with mustard and cheese. Here are three tried and tested easy recipes that I hope you enjoy.

Posh Basked Beans on Toast
Squashy Sausage Bake
Sausage Ragu
200g chorizo sausage – sliced into half moons 1 medium onion – finely chopped 2 garlic cloves – finely sliced 2 x 400g tins cannellini beans – drained 1 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes 1 tbsp paprika 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 1 tbsp runny honey 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce Tabasco sauce to taste
1 x squash – peeled, de-seeded and cubed 1 tbsp coriander seeds – crushed (optional) 1 tsp dried chilli flakes 1 tbsp rapeseed oil (or veg oil) 1 pack 6 sausages (any) 100g breadcrumbs Few thyme sprigs – leaves picked 100g blue cheese (stilton) or feta crumbled
1 x onion - finely chopped 1 x carrot - peeled and finely chopped 2 x celery sticks -finely chopped 2 x garlic cloves - finely chopped 1 tbsp olive oil 6 x herby sausages - squeezed out of their skins 1 tbsp tomato puree 1 tsp smoked paprika 1 small glass red wine 1 x tin chopped tomatoes Salt & black pepper
Place a large pan on a medium heat and dry fry the sliced chorizo until it starts to release its oil. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving the oil in the pan.
Heat oven to 200°C. Put the squash in a baking tray, sprinkle with the coriander seeds (if using) and the chilli flakes and toss in the oil.
Heat the oil in a large saucepan over a medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion, carrot, celery and garlic. (I chop the whole lot up in a food processor. Takes 2 mins.) Fry gently until soft. Stir regularly to prevent burning.
Add the onion and garlic to the and fry gently for 5 mins. Then the paprika and balsamic vinegar fry for another few mins until soft sticky.
pan add and and
Add the tomatoes, beans and chorizo to the pan along with the honey, Worcestershire sauce and tabasco, stir well and bring to the boil then simmer gently for 30 mins, stirring every so often. Season to taste. Serve on toast and top with grated cheese if you fancy it. Serves 4.
Bake in the oven for about 30 mins. The squash should be almost cooked. Remove from oven. Squeeze the sausage meat from the skins, you should get about five small balls from each sausage, straight into the baking tray and toss in the oil. Put back in the oven for another 10 mins or until the sausage balls are cooked and the squash is soft and starting to brown. Remove from the oven again and add the crumbled cheese, then cover with the breadcrumbs mixed with thyme. Back in the oven for a few minutes until the whole lot is sizzling and browned. Serve with a crisp green salad. Scrape all the crispy bits from the tray. It’s the best bit! Serves 4.
Then add the tomato puree and smoked paprika and cook for a minute before adding the sausages (minus their skins). Use a wooden spoon or fork to break the meat up as it cooks. When the meat has browned pour in the wine and bubble for a few mins. Then add the tinned tomatoes and half a tin of water. Bring to the boil and simmer gently for at least 30 mins. Add a bit more water if it looks like its drying out. Season to taste and serve with pasta, rice, couscous, mash, jacket spuds or whatever takes your fancy. I like to add grated cheese as well. Serves 4.

This is the time of year that thoughts turn to spring cleaning…or is it??? To be honest my thoughts never turn to such things. I kind of wish they did. I am not proud of the fact that cleaning is in my top 5 things that I hate to do, along with going to the dentist and clothes shopping. I always remember some advice my mum gave me – a bit of dust is good for you! And now there is research to back this up. Honest! Houses that are too clean can be unhealthy. Young children need some exposure to germs. That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it.
Did you know... • cleaning for 2 hours burns 200 calories • the average woman cleans for 12,896 hours in her lifetime (not me!) • Iceland is the cleanest country in the world Don’t get me wrong, my house isn’t a total tip. Every so often we have a blitz (usually when someone is about to visit) when I start at the top (my bedroom) and Gary starts at the bottom (living room) and we meet in the middle. Well that’s the plan. However, the way this normally pans out is that I go through the rooms like a woman possessed and when I finally arrive in the living room, sweating and bedraggled – Gary is doing what I like to call “micro – cleaning” so instead of tackling the
hoovering, dusting or cleaning the windows – he’s perched on the settee putting his chuffing records in alphabetical order!!! I am lucky to have some very house-proud friends who every so often take pity on me. After a particularly stressful loft conversion that left the whole house under an inch of dust, my kind friend offered to help me clean up. After rolling her sleeves up she asked me where my bleach cloths were. My blank stare said it all. I had failed at the first hurdle. I hung my head in shame as she explained the benefits of bleach...and cloths. Now I could let this get to me, and to be honest I used to. Why was I genetically not wired up to want to clean? Why did I not get excited at the prospect of a gleaming hob? Why did I find the idea of using cotton buds to clean the corners of my window frames faintly ridiculous? All these questions and no answers. Anyway, as the years have passed, I have decided to accept my phobia (is that even a thing?) and embrace it. Yes, dust blows across the living room floor like tumbleweed. Yes, there might be smudges on the windows, marks on the kitchen sides and scuffs on the walls. The mop sits forlorn in the garage and our cleaning products seem to last years. But one thing I can say with pride is that we can find any CD or LP within seconds!!!

Fabulous Phlox Border phlox are old fashioned plants with a bright new future as gardeners switch to perennials with great scent, hardy disposition and minimal care requirements. They can give years and years of service in the herbaceous or mixed border and provide a wonderful, scented summer display. The ideal site is sunny, with rich, well-dug soil with perhaps a little late afternoon shade to protect them from the extremes of summer heat. In practice they get full sun or light shade in my garden and do pretty well in either. Border phlox are incredibly hardy and start to show new growth in February. The new leaves are often attractively coloured but only a few varieties maintain these coloured leaves into summer, the others gradually turn green. Good coloured leaf types include Starfire and Blue Paradise. Variegated phlox have lovely white and green or cream, red and green leaves throughout the summer to compliment the flowers. Enriching the soil with compost dug into the top 1ft of soil will do wonders for the plants. I find the chalk in mushroom compost helps to reduce mildew problems. I always give my phlox a good dressing with a well-balanced fertiliser like Growmore in spring followed by blood, fish and bone in mid-summer. Also give the plants some space if possible
to improve air circulation; plant border phlox about 2ft apart. Water the ground not the plant and try and use water at air temperature (say from a water butt, or a can filled a few hours before) rather than an icy blast from a hosepipe. Phlox make good cut flowers – cut in the morning and remove the lower leaves. At the end of the season cut down the stems to ground level and put them in the council green waste bin rather than the compost heap to avoid carrying any pests or diseases from season to season. There are 100’s of varieties to choose from and often it’s the old, heritage varieties that are new to our nursery range as they are “rediscovered” growing in happy neglect in an old garden. In recent years we have reintroduced the old German varieties Sternhimmel (Starry Sky) and Lavendelwolke (Lavender Cloud) to go with Monte Cristallo and Kirchenfürst plus a new English variety raised by Terry Dagley and named Maude Stella Dagley as well as promoting old English varieties such as Elizabeth Arden, Bright Eyes, Border Gem and White Admiral. Once you’ve grown border phlox you will be hooked by the beauty of the flowers and the heady scent on a summer’s evening.

Tanya About Town Summer is just around the corner, and we’re starting to see lots more outdoor activities in and around Nottingham. Come together and celebrate St Georges Day (23 April). Led by the man himself, the traditional Royal Society of St George parade will make its way from Pelham Street to Old Market Square, finishing in front of England’s largest St George’s flag. Let’s hope the weather behaves during the early May Bank Holiday as over 300 civil war re-enactors will be descending on Newark as the clock is turned back to the turbulent mid-17th century. The 5th Annual Pikes and Plunder Civil War Festival will take place on 5/6 May. If you are a fan of the great outdoors, join the rangers of Sherwood Pines as they take you and your family on a bushcraft adventure through the forest (16 April). Speaking of Sherwood, join award-winning tour guide Ezekial Bone on his new family show! A promenade performance of one of the earliest medieval Robin Hood ballads, adapted for young minds and family audiences (6 April). The promenade performance begins at Nottingham Contemporary and walks a short distance to the ancient St Mary’s Church. If you love your literature, a walk for book lovers takes place in the city. This two hour guided walk is about a mile in distance and showcases the many writers, poets and published authors associated with Nottingham (7 April/5 May). Nottingham Poetry Festival will once again shine a spotlight on the city’s thriving literary scene for the fourth time this spring. Running from 26 April – 5 May 2019, the festival will present an eclectic line-up of acclaimed national and local poets and performers. There’s tons of choice for music
lovers too. Legends Live brings together the queen of rock, Suzi Quatro, pop icon David Essex, Les McKeown’s Bay City Rollers and legendary rock band Smokie, to perform all their chart-topping hits on one stage at Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena (10 April) and if you’re a hardcore fan of country rock, Country Rocks comes to the Arena on 12 April. Over at the Concert Hall the life and work of Neil Diamond is celebrated in Hello Again (13 April), a show which takes you on a musical journey through Neil Diamond’s glittering 50 year career.
April). The multi-award-winning Carlton Operatic Society perform Mack & Mable (7-11 May), Direct from the West End, Annie returns (20-25 May) and finally, winner of every major Best Musical award, including the 2016 Olivier Award for Best New Musical, Kinky Boots, visits (27 May-8 June)

(1st), also paying a visit is Alfie Boe (10), Michael Ball (20) and The Simon & Garfunkel Songbook (26) to name a few, while May sees Marc Almond (6) and Katherine Jenkins (17) return to the venue. HEALTH WALKS?
WHAT’S IN THEM FOR ME?
Since starting in 2010, the Nottinghamshire Guided Walks Partnership has featured Health Walks in their booklet as a highly beneficial social means of regaining fitness after injury, illness or hospital operation. Most of the County’s boroughs, plus organisations like Age UK and the National Trust have trained leaders to escort these groups for short distances - usually one to three miles. Despite lack of adequate funding, the numbers of people joining these free walks are growing steadily, enjoying not only improving fitness but the friendly social contact with other similar individuals. It’s win - win for everyone! healthier. David (aged 72), a former biologist, knows the value of this gentle exercise. It has reduced his arthritis pains, but admits that he loves the gossipy social side of the walking even more. It was clear from Ken’s sunny smile that he enjoys the social chatter, but admits that he has felt the benefit of walking regularly for two years. ‘I can walk uphill and talk at the same time now’ he quips. Partnership members recently accompanied four of these regular groups, to record some of their opinions. Keith Wallace: “I set up ‘On Your Doorstep’ walks around Mansfield to encourage people to take regular exercise and provide a place where they could socialise. I had a heart attack at 36 and two heart procedures for arrhythmia. Walking helped me get fitter and establish a routine of regular exercise. My problems had led to depression, with feelings of loneliness and low self-esteem that often accompany it. So walking in a group has helped me recover and keep more positive. I thought that if it could do that for me, maybe it could work for others. “Since we started three years ago, we have moved from one walk per fortnight to seven per week. Over 120 people come on at least one of our walks every week. One man came because he was fed up of his daughter nagging him to get out of the house. He expected his first walk to kill him, but he celebrated his 90th birthday last year and invited all his new friends to the party.” This walk started in Newstead village. Keith and his regulars also feature on the front cover of this year’s Guided Walks booklet. Gedling Country Park: This group meets Mondays and Wednesdays, at the Spring Lane car park. Lorna, with a big smile, says she has been walking for over a year with the two groups. Loves the social chat as well as feeling much
66
Rushcliffe Country Park: This group meets at the Education Centre on Wednesdays, but splits into smaller parties shortly after leaving it. Duncan Ritchie led the slightly larger party for about 2 miles around this very attractive park. Out in the lead, Susan was very positive. “Lovely morning today—I’m enjoying the exercise and meeting other people - discussing all sorts of things. We’re out in all weathers—it’s better than the gym!” Walking beside her, Andy agreed. “I just like being out in the fresh air—and I guess it’s doing me good!” At the end, enjoying the lakeside view, Brenda brightly summed it up. “Well, when you live alone, it’s lovely to get out with a cheerful group like ours.” Woodthorpe Grange Park: This group walks 1½ to 2 miles in the park but meets first every Monday morning at the Sherwood Community Centre, promoted by Age UK. Rubina’s view was that “Fresh air, exercise, meeting people and just doing something for me makes me fitter.” Vicky felt much the same - “a chance to socialise and get me out of the house, and to enjoy things in general.” David revealed a little more. “I’m here because I am a Type 2 diabetic and was recommended to exercise more, so I’ve been coming on these weekly walks. I quite enjoy it. They’re nice people and it’s a good steady walk.” Full details of health walks appear in the Notts Guided Walks booklet, available free now in our libraries and information centres. Know anyone they would help?

Yet another record for the Notts Guided Walks booklets Demand has again forced the popular Notts Guided Walks booklet to a 9,000 print run for 2019, supported now by a more modern website nottsguidedwalks.co.uk that is more mobile-friendly. Some self-guided routes are being given down-loadable GPS files for your mobile phone. See our web-site for details. Most of the walks are short - the longest is 8 miles. There is a large section in the book for health walks too, perfect for our less able or recovering walkers. These walks are taken by trained leaders as part of a national scheme.

We are pleased to add that our charity collection for YOUNG MiNDS is healthily building – in fact we have been able to send them £1300 already! In June we will be performing at a private function and on Saturday 6th July 2019 we will be one of the acts performing at the Underwood Festival, where we hope the sun will shine in support of all the many people providing entertainment, stalls and activities, and of course on the visitors! Other events are also on the horizon, hence our rehearsals are in full swing as we learn new items to add to our repertoire. Visit our website or look at our facebook page to see where we will be performing in the future – we look forward to seeing you.

business, IT & finance Nottingham Entrepreneur Recognised for Her Work Supporting Young People And Their Wellbeing
Anita Sharma is a Personal Growth and Wellbeing coach for women and children and caught the eye of businessman and Dragons’ Den star during ‘Small Business Sunday’ which is a competition he runs on Twitter to recognise small businesses with entrepreneurial spirit. Anita was invited by Theo Paphitis, alongside other national #SBS winners, to join him for a networking event and presentation of her award in Birmingham. She said: “Supporting people’s emotional wellbeing, especially among preteens and teens, is a passion of mine, however as a small business it has been tough trying to raise the profile of the work I do. I am ecstatic that Theo has recognised my hard work and helped spread the word about what I do to his following.” West Bridgford-based Anita works with children to help them understand their emotions, reduce anxiety, build positive relationships, increase their confidence and self-esteem and manage academic pressure. Alongside running her business Anita also volunteers her time in local schools supporting teachers and students with their personal growth and wellbeing journey. A Thoroughly Modern Way To Work by Helen Jones Some recent research with millennials uncovered interesting responses in relation to how they would like to work given the option. 91% said that flexible working was important and 92% wanted the option of working from home. However 66% said they would want to work more in an office and nobody wanted to work from home exclusively. It set me thinking to how it used to be back in the day when I used to work in the field as an Area Manager for a large chain of chemist (not difficult to guess who). My geographic patch was from Bournemouth to Brighton and up into South London. In the days before mobile phones an administrator from Head Office would call the stores to check I’d been in and how long I’d stayed. I didn’t question the process but very often I would leave a store knowing I hadn’t achieved what was required but knew I had to get the other store visits clocked in before 5.30pm. This was so counterproductive in hindsight. Some stores required a lot of support and other managed very well with only minimum input. Had I not been targeted on the number of store visits and allowed to use my local knowledge I could have made so much more impact in the role. It’s all about trust. Trusting that you have employed the right person to do the job and allowing them the flexibility to make the correct decisions in order to deliver results. Does working from home mean that staff are slacking? Research shows that flexible working can help organisations attract talent, improve employee job satisfaction and loyalty, reduce absenteeism and improve well-being. And that is surely a good thing? Looking back I didn’t feel valued or trusted – I worked under the assumption that my employers were waiting to catch me out. I delivered results year after year but had there been more trust and flexibility in hindsight I know I could have achieved so much more.

a helping hand New Health Texting Service for Parents and Carers Across Notts
Parentline, a new text messaging service offering parents and carers across Nottinghamshire access to confidential health advice has been launched by Nottinghamshire Healthcare’s Healthy Family Teams. With more and more people using hand held mobile devices, the new Parentline text messaging service is an easy way for parents and carers to confidentially ask for help about a range of issues, such as feeding and nutrition, emotional health and wellbeing, child development, behaviour difficulties and family health. They can also find out how to access other local services for example, School Health Team, breastfeeding support or health visitor led sessions. Parents and carers of children aged 0-19 can contact the text messaging service for advice on Parentline 07520 619919. The service does not replace face-to-face contact with Healthy Family Teams but aims to offer an alternative, accessible method of contact and a flexible way to provide support. Parentline is available from Monday to Friday 9.00am-4.30pm excluding bank holidays. Messages sent to the dedicated number are delivered to a secure website, and responded to by the Healthy Family Team. Texts are usually replied to within one working day. Automatic replies will be sent to any messages received out of hours explaining where to get help if their question is urgent, and when they can expect a response.

Share Your Experience of Cancer Care
My name is Holly and I’m proud to work for Macmillan Cancer Support. My job is to involve people who are living with cancer in Nottinghamshire in developing and improving local cancer services. The people I work with can be people who have cancer, their family members or carers. I also work with people who may not have cancer, but who can help Macmillan understand the barriers their community can face in accessing cancer services, and how Macmillan can help change this. Did you know that in 2017 there were 35,600 people in Nottinghamshire known to be living with cancer and that this number is set to double by 2030 to over 71,000. Macmillan is funding a variety of local services across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, including a £6 million investment in the Macmillan Cancer Partnership in Nottingham where we work alongside partners to deliver projects and services to the growing number of people who need them. Whatever cancer throws your way, we’d like to be right there with you and I would like to hear from people living with cancer, from all ages and communities, so that we can use their experience and knowledge to get services right. There are lots of ways to get involved, from taking part in discussion groups or interviews, becoming a community researcher, campaigning, volunteering or becoming a member of a patient panel. If you are interested, you can email me at hswinckels@macmillan.org.uk Need to talk? We’ll be right there with you by simply calling 0808 808 00 00, 7 days a week, 8am-8pm or we’re online 24/7 www. macmillan.org.uk

a helping hand West Bridgford Shopmobility Moves into Holidays and Hospitals Thinking of booking your UK holiday for 2019, but worried that mobility problems might stop you enjoying it? Well, look no further than West Bridgford Shopmobility! We’re situated behind the library on Central Avenue in West Bridgford, and we can provide you with collapsible mobility scooters (which will fit into any car boot, coach luggage compartment or railway guard’s van) and wheelchairs on short-term hire! It’s easy to arrange; if you’re not a Shopmobility member, you can sign up for just £10 a year, then you can hire the device to suit you for as little as £20 per week for wheelchairs, or £30 per week for scooters. And there’s no limit on the time you can hire them for! After being discharged from a stay in hospital you migh have a problem getting around while convalescing. Shopmobility is already liaising with local hospitals in the provision of scooters or wheelchairs to help former patients get their lives back to normal, as many satisfied members will confirm. Do you know of a friend or relative who needs help to regain their mobility after a hospital stay, or an illness? Then why not get in touch with West Bridgford Shopmobility, and let’s see how we can work together! Marie Males, chairman of West Bridgford Shopmobility, said ‘We have been looking for ways to enhance the range of services we can provide, and we believe that this is a logical step’. Just call us on 0115 981 5451, or pop in and chat to one of our volunteers – we’re open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10am to 2pm. Over the last couple of years we’ve already helped many local residents to make the most of their holidays – so why not you?

Q: What’s the best part of your role? A: I am a great believer in making a difference, no matter how big or small, in my community. I like the fact that people know me by name and feel reassured to see me around. I consider myself to be approachable and to the best of my ability assist in helping people change their life for the better. I work on a great team, we all bring together our own experiences from life no matter how young or old we are. Team working is essential in any job and a big part of this role. Q: What’s moment?
your
proudest
A: I have two. It is genuinely helping people to get their life back on the right track. A lady I dealt with had turned to alcohol to deal with everyday life, causing issues not only for herself but her young children. Advice and encouragement was given and support throughout her time asking for help. One year down the line she is a confident lady who has not drunk for 11 months, cares well for her children and now supports other families in similar circumstances.
I have also been heavily involved in providing a service to a volunteer bureau which provides a personal crime prevention course to residents in the area whose first language isn’t English. I have provided course notes, had meetings with the course tutors and attended a final question and answer session. This course has been running for a couple of years and I have been working with them since its launch. Q: What would you say to anyone looking to follow in your footsteps? A: My advice to anyone thinking of joining Nottinghamshire Police is … GO FOR IT. Our role has evolved so much since it first started. You need to be flexible, level-headed and able to communicate on all levels. Your patience will be tested at times. The role does include working shifts so be prepared for this. Come and help us make a difference I look forward to working alongside you in the future.
