Fancy fostering?

Do you have room in your home – and heart – to foster for Animal Accident Rescue Unit? With so many abandoned animals – especially cats - coming in, this local charity is running out of room to care for them. The ongoing lack of fosterers affects the charity being able to help, and rehome, further animals. If you can offer a short-term refuge in your home, to care for a cat or kitten until rehoming, Animal Accident Rescue Unit would love to hear from you. All you need is space in your home, common-sense and experience in looking after a cat or kitten. Fostered cats must be kept indoors for their own safety – so a secure haven inside your home is needed, and a pre-foster homecheck is always done. Plenty of support and advice are given by the charity. You could share your home with a loving rescue cat who would truly appreciate being in a foster home – like lovely Timmy (pictured).

Could You Guide the Way in Your Community?

National charity Guide Dogs is looking for volunteers in the Nottinghamshire area, who can give just a few hours a week to help a person with a vision impairment to get out of their home and into the local community. Provided by Guide Dogs, My Guide is a free and flexible service that helps people with sight loss to build confidence and take part in social and leisure activities, using a trained volunteer as a sighted guide. My Guide Volunteer Manager, Elizabeth Felgate says: “Volunteering just a few hours a week can make a real difference to a person with sight loss. By supporting somebody local to you, you can help them to increase their independence and rebuild their lifestyle. It is also a great way of making new friends and gaining skills.” My Guide client and volunteer, Kay was first introduced to My Guide when she qualified with her now retired guide dog Frankie. Kay needed help to free run Frankie safely and quickly found herself matched with a volunteer. She continues to use the service today, but is now a volunteer herself. There is currently a vacancy for a My Guide Volunteer Administrator at the Nottingham office and there are also people waiting for My Guides in the Nottinghamshire area. You will need to be 18 years of age and willing to undergo training. If you would like more information about the service or volunteering, contact Elizabeth Felgate at the Nottingham office on: 0345 143 0221 or email: Elizabeth. Felgate@guidedogs.org.uk

Reliable volunteers, who live in or around Nottingham, are needed – so if this sounds like you, please contact Animal Accident Rescue Unit on admin@aaru.org.uk, or leave a message with your details on 01159321555 and you will receive a reply as soon as possible. Not just fit. Dad fit. Do you remember just after New Year when you resolved to change your lifestyle? Become fitter, eat better, drink less, and generally get buff for beach season? You created a pinterest board of exercise plans and cool looking beach shorts that you were planning on showing off in the summer. I’m guessing that like me, many of them have been completely forgotten as you polish off your child’s unfinished dinners and tuck into those extra helpings of pudding. After all, that bottle of beer in the fridge isn’t going to drink itself, and it would be rude to leave a slice of cake uneaten. And suddenly the holidays are closer. Unless you start on some high-intensity workout plan you’re running the risk of being mistaken for a muffin in swimwear. It’s hard to pretend you’re James Bond when you’re still carrying the Christmas cake. Have no fear, as every dad knows living with children is as much workout as anyone needs. Follow my foolproof steps below and you will be ready for the holidays (please note, this isn’t a legal guarantee. In fact it may not actually be true either!).

FULL BODY WORKOUT Your new regime starts from the moment you wake up: get out of bed, make breakfast, find the toys, switch on the TV, get the kids clothes, switch the TV channel, remake breakfast (they’ve changed their minds), force the kids to brush their teeth, try and get them dressed, find that shoe, no, the other one, work out where the school bags have gone, dress yourself before you leave the house…. Your workout will never end.

LEG DAY It’s important to focus on specific muscle groups in any exercise plan. Often the legs are overlooked but as long as you live in a house that includes both children and stairs you’ll be absolutely fine. Having kids means you’ll have to endure countless instances of running between floors. It doesn’t matter how many times you screech at your kids to come downstairs and get whatever toy they’re complaining about not having, they’ll stay in their rooms like the residents of a besieged castle forcing you to bend to their will. But remember this (as you’re climbing like Sisyphus for the umpteenth time), you will have calves to die for at the end of it.

MOBILE DAD Keeping your mobility is vital, especially as the years go on. Fortunately your kids are here to help. The thoughtful blighters constantly leave piles of clothes, toys, books and random debris across the house. All you have to do is pick it up. Regularly. And have no fear, just when you think you’ve done a sweep of the whole house your mini gym coaches will start the routine all over again. Isn’t it great to have such forward-thinking children. Just remember to bend from the knees.

STRESS INDUCED WEIGHT LOSS If all that sounds too much like hard work, don’t worry. All children will drive you to distraction with a continuous routine of not listening, constantly repeating the same questions, asking you to pick up the thing that’s within arms reach of them, singing terrible songs loudly, screaming, crying for no reason, and waking you up before the sun has thought about rising. All of this combined overload will naturally heighten your stress and anxiety resulting in unchecked weight loss (and probable hair loss and a general increase in muttering threats beneath your breath). That’s it dads. You have no excuse. Follow this handy exercise plan and you’ll be ready to audition for Baywatch. Failing that, there’s always the option to sit on the patio and finish off that last beer.

Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

ockwell Go-Karting have a brand new outdoor track, with 750 metres of hairpins, straights, twists and turns this superb track offers thrills and spills to all budding race enthusiasts. They have easy to use 200cc Biz karts which are great fun and thrilling to drive as you pitch machine against the tarmac. ‘I took my husband and two 14 year olds to test drive the track for ng magazines. They have karts suitable for both juniors and adults and the boys were raring to go. We received a really warm welcome from the owner Richard and his staff who were well organised and very professional, you are in safe hands! After being given overalls, helmet and a safety briefing, we were let loose on the track. My husband and the boys whizzed off with no hesitation and it didn't take me too long to get the hang of it and I soon gave them a run for their money. All they talked about in the car on the way home was ‘when are we going again’! So we will be booking another session in the very near future.’ S Cooper.

Lockwell Hill Karting offer different race formats depending on the size and ages of your group. The Nottingham Emmanuel School News Two Nottingham Emmanuel School students have been recognised at The Rotary Clubs of Nottingham 2018 Children of Courage Awards. Students Kyle Breward and Ashar Tasnim (pictured below) were both honoured at the Awards ceremony, which recognises young people who have shown courage in the face of adversity.

The school is celebrating the achievements of two of its Year 7 Gymnasts who brought home a wealth of medals from the East Midlands Championships. Bailey Yates (12yrs) took part in the Under 13’s Level 5 events, gaining a Gold in Floor, Pommel, High Bar and, especially exciting for Bailey, he won an overall Gold trophy. Fellow student Kaydon Kennedy (12 yrs) took part in the U13 Level 4 events, gaining a Bronze in Floor and Gold in Pommel.

Student Ramiyah Kofi (pictured left) has achieved a string of successes in Gymnastics which has now led to her appointment to the England Squad 2018/9 and as a reserve for the GB Junior Squad. 14-year-old Ramiyah said the news came after she won a British Junior Silver on vault at the British Championships at Echo Arena. Ramiyah trains 24 hours every week and says she is determined to make the most of her opportunities. Nottingham Emmanuel School student, Adelia Hunter (pictured right) says she is jumping for joy at the news that she has won a scholarship to train with The Centre of Advanced Training at the Academy of Northern Ballet. 12-year-old Adelia says she will now continue with her preparation, doing a more intensive training in the summer holidays.

Don’t sett health in

Stressed? It’s not healthy... As a BANT (British Assoc. For Applied Nutrition and Nutritional Therapy) registered nutritionist, I see a fair share of clients with various health conditions. From digestive disorders to more complex issues, stress is always an unwelcome variable that is stopping individuals from getting better. Developed as a survival instinct to save us from incoming dangers, cortisol, the main stress hormone, is freely produced in response to stressful situations. Most of us will be pretty familiar with its effects. A racing heart, inability to switch off and anxiety, but what is lesser known is the wider ranging consequences: • Stress puts digestion on the back burner. Stress is a survival instinct, so why would you need to be digesting food whilst attempting to run away from a predator? IBS-type symptoms are common in chronically stressed individuals.

• Similarly to digestion, fighting off infections also isn’t a priority whilst in a state of danger, so immunity is suppressed. The net result is a poorly functioning immune system and susceptibility to pick up every cold going. • Cortisol, the stress hormone, is the same substance that controls the sleep/wake cycle. Cortisol is naturally higher in the morning allowing us to wake up refreshed and drops through the day, making way for restful sleep. Higher levels of cortisol during the day or evening may contribute to poor sleep and morning grogginess. Needless to say, there is only so long that the body can go on in a stressed state.

30 Day Plan – how it worked for us... Here at NGHQ we like a challenge. In the last edition Eva told us all about her 30 day nutrition plan and we decided to give it a go. Here’s what happened... Eva sent us each an individual plan based on a questionnaire we completed on-line. There was Don’t lots of really useful information and advice. The expect plan also included meal ideas and recipes and guidance on how much protein, carbohydrates and fats we should each be eating. I knew I wasn’t eating enough and also not eating at the right times. The plan got me to focus on this. On a typical day I had Greek yoghurt and fruit for breakfast, a tuna salad for lunch and sweet potato or brown rice with loads of vegetables and chicken or fish for dinner. I was never hungry. Eva also got us drinking a lot more water than we were used to. With only a few tweeks to my diet I had loads more energy, lost 1” off my waist and reduced my urge to scoff crisps and chocolate biscuits the minute I got in from work. I also learnt not to be afraid of fat. Good It’sfat, personal like coconut oil, rapeseed oil and butter are an important part of a healthy diet. After 30 days I have continued to stick to most of my new eating habits. I work on an 80/20 split. So I am good 80% of the time and the other 20% of the time I eat and drink whatever takes my fancy! It works for me.

How do you stop stressing with screaming kids, a pressure filled job, bad relationships, money worries delete as appropriate -? Of course, it’s easier said than done.

Ali Wale

The answer may well be in self care. Far from being a hippy concept, it merely means paying attention to how you feel then trying to balance it.

Eva Humphries is a Nottingham based nutritionist, founder of Wholefood Warrior and appreciator of good food. Eva holds health and wellbeing talks on topics including the basics of nutrition, improving energy and detoxing. Visit www.wholefoodwarrior.co.uk for more information.

In his book Emotional First Aid, the author Guy Winch talks extensively about treating stress and upsets the same way as you would physical wounds. You would clean and treat an open wound so why are we ignoring our emotional wellbeing?

HOW AND WHY BUILD MUSCLE? For many years weight lifting has been viewed as a mainly male sport. The reluctance for women, and some men, to lift weights has always revolved around the fear of looking too masculine as a result. But there are numerous positive effects from building lean muscle tissue, and we aren’t talking about your huge Olympia body builders here. We are talking about general health and living later in life with fewer issues. Why Build Muscle? One of the things we teach our academy members is that lifting weights does not mean huge grotesque physiques. Firstly, and this is relatable to the majority of the population… we NEED muscle mass to burn body fat more efficiently. YES, that’s right. Increasing the quantity of your lean muscle tissue will help you burn body fat much faster. Aside from lowering your body fat, a good amount of lean muscle tissue will help and support the skeletal system, improve your posture and aid joint mobility, alongside many other sport related benefits, but we are talking about general health here. How to Build Muscle Tissue Firstly, to build good muscle tissue, we need to feed the body with what it requires for muscle growth and that is protein and carbohydrates. Effectively, you should be in a controlled calorie surplus, so you will need slightly more calories than your daily recommended intake to aid recovery and repair muscle tissue tearing from exercise. The catch 22 situation here is that you will gain a little body fat, so you do need to control and monitor your intake, but once you have gained a reasonable amount of lean tissue (5-7 lbs to start with) you will effectively burn body fat faster when you reduce your calories to under your daily requirements.

Email: info@strengthyphysique.co.uk Website: www.strengthphysique.co.uk

Secondly, gaining muscle tissue through lifting weights takes time, a long time, so lifting weights for six months is not going to turn you into the incredible hulk, but it will improve your health, body fat and general wellbeing. The topic of gaining muscle is a huge one to cover but we hope this has given you an outline that doing hours of just cardio to lose stubborn fat just isn’t enough. If improving all round general health is the main goal you need to build some muscle first, then let the muscle work for you when you come to reduce your body fat.

You can find more information about these kind of topics on our website.

ereditar y H : s w ie v e Bur tonR Good Grief In recent years a more sophisticated, psychological, and down-right disturbing brand of horror film has arisen that has more than jump-scares and buckets of blood to shock the audience. With Hereditary looking to be the latest in the line in this genre, will this anxiety ridden scare-fest prove to be a haunting event or time for a snooze? Hereditary follows a family in grief after their grandmother’s death. Now the family is plagued by horrific phenomena that are getting more and more intense. Can this already damaged household bare another set of tragedies? From the brilliant opening shot, you are free-falling into Hereditary’s spiral of madness. Simple scenes of domesticity will have you holding your breath in dread. And it is this constant sense of danger that director Ari Aster never lets you break free of, making for one of the most intense experiences I’ve ever seen in a classroom since year 8. Everything you see on screen has clearly been put there for a very specific reason, whether that be to scare, intrigue, or simply look gorgeous in the shot, the film-making craftsmanship on show here is phenomenal. This is a film you have to pay attention to, but you’ll be rewarded if you do. And punished too, kind of. Why? Barely seeable figures in the corner of a room, grotesque acts of violence, and literally haunting background moments will stick in your memory and maybe have you keeping the lights on for a while. But none of this would be even half as scary without having poor tortured souls in there to really feel sorry for. The acting on display by the entire cast is nothing short of incredible. You can’t help but feel tremendous empathy for Alex Wolff, as your typically scared teenager just trying to lead an average life. And Toni Collette’s performance as the emotionally scarred and broken Annie

is a complex and fascinating dive into the psychology of grief. The “so-strange-and-horrific-but-you-can’t-takeyour-eyes-off-it” ending is definitely a crescendo that will have you both shocked and questioning everything you just saw. The themes of grief and how a person deals with it is a horror of its own, and the drama that comes out of this dysfunctional family trying to keep it together with the effectiveness of dried up duct tape is an uncomfortable and tough watch. Not the kind of scary you normally get in a horror film, but definitely still a brand of scary. If you enter this film ready to truly concentrate, you will be rewarded with an expertly crafted, sophisticated horror film that leaves you with more questions than you wanted and yet another thing to hide under your covers from. Hereditary = 8/10 © Sam Burton (aged 21)

Many West Bridgford people would have had connections with the Pavilion Hospital – as a member of staff, as a volunteer, as a shopkeeper providing supplies, or as a local resident who offered accommodation to nurses or other hospital staff. The heritage volunteers at Trent Bridge are researching this story and they are very keen to hear from anybody whose relatives, friends or neighbours had a connection with the hospital. They would also be delighted to hear from anybody who has any photographs or memorabilia associated with the hospital. If you can help, please send your contact details to: heritage@nottsccc. co.uk and one of the volunteers will be in touch with you shortly. Many thanks!

Let a new daydream take a hold of you. Our imaginative life is important; it’s where we create new visions of a lifestyle we want to wake up to. Pay attention to your daydreams, they’re trying to guide you towards something wonderful. Believe in them, nurture them and, importantly, seize opportunities to make them real. If you can dream it, you can do it!

The topic of Nottinghamshire Neighbourhood Watch’s 2018 Conference and AGM was “Connect 2 Protect”. It was based on the Mansfield and Ashfield scheme, which aims to strengthen and develop existing community structures, connection and engagement. The main aim of the conference was to constitute a holistic approach to a changing landscape of crime. This collaborative perspective towards crime was conferred by Nottingham’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Paddy Tipping, police Deputy Chief Constable, Rachel Barber; Stuart Wright, the project lead for “Connect 2 Protect”; as well as Peter Moyes representing ‘Lifeskills Education’ and Sajid Mohammed from ‘Nottingham Citizens’. The speakers voiced their opinions on the importance of moving from a crime focused to a wider social inclusion approach. The panel discussed with delegates of Neighbourhood Watch their confidence with the police, the impact of social conditions and poverty to crime, the nature of crime like knife and hate crime in Nottingham, and the actions taken after reporting crime. There was a consensus among the speakers which emphasised a need for improvement to the structures of communications from and between the police, Neighbourhood Watch, community organisers and the public; changes needed to bring communities back to collaborative ideals. The conference was also joined by representatives from Nottinghamshire Community Organisers ‘Age Friendly’, ‘Good Vibes, and ‘Victim Care’.

The Toilet Seat Tale

What is it with holiday accommodation and toilets? Wherever in the world we go, we seem to have issues with the toilet! Honestly... is it just me???

And why is it that wherever you stay – even the most luxurious cottage with a sea view and all mod cons – you can never figure out how to use the oven??

Norfolk – static caravan. Gary sat on the seat and cracked it in half. Two days of the holiday spent sourcing a new one. Quite a challenge finding a peach toilet seat circa 1950’s.

Rant over. I am currently sitting in a lovely pub garden sipping fizz in the sunshine. We’re about to drive back to our amazing holiday accommodation where the telly works, there’s a really comfy bed, a fully stocked fridge and you don’t need a degree in engineering to work the oven. Crucially the mugs are the size of buckets and the toilet seats are rock solid! Best of all you even get your post delivered...

Morocco – hotel in Fez. The toilet was so close to the sink that you had to sit “side saddle” in order to even use it. Not a great time to get dysentery... Spain - 5 star house in Mijas to celebrate my 50th. The owner forgot to mention that a problem with the plumbing meant using a bin for toilet paper...like being back in Greece in the 1980’s. New York – Brooklyn brownstone. Amazing place but every time you sat on the toilet seat it slid forward and you felt like you were about to launch into oblivion like Eddie the Eagle. Barcelona – bathroom the size of a small semi. Yes you’ve guessed it. The seat simply did not fit the toilet. No matter how much you carefully adjusted it and tentatively perched your derrier you inevitably slipped and had to grab the loo roll holder to save the day. Don’t get me wrong, I love going away, but with age comes expectation. It’s the little things like the size of cups when you are staying somewhere abroad. Why are they always dolls house size?

Remember folks “holiday” is really just a state of mind.

Golden Staycation Rules

• Have a budget - like you would if you went away. • No cleaning. • No checking work emails/messages. • Eat lovely food - either cook something different or go out. • Go out for day trips - there are probably loads of lovely places nearby that you haven‛t seen. • Visit Lidl - with all the wierd brands you feel like you are in a supermarket abroad. • Be kind to yourself • Don‛t follow your normal routine. Mix it up a bit. • Act like you‛re on holiday. It works!!! © Ali Wale

Steeped in history, we ate in the room where the cursed galleon is on display, now encased in a glass case. It's claimed that anyone who cleaned this small wooden ship met a mysterious death, hence the inches of dust it is now covered with.

T

ravellers to the city of Nottingham invariably find their way to this quaint old inn, carved into the rock connected with the labyrinth of sandstone caves at the foot of Nottingham Castle. As its sign says, it truly is “well known throughout the world”, but the very first question every visitor asks inevitably relates to how it came to have such an unusual name. The word “trip” used to mean a stop or rest – so the name of the pub simply means a stop on the way to Jerusalem. This unique pub has real charm. We visited early on a Friday evening and received a really warm welcome. There are plenty of fascinating rooms to sit and enjoy a drink and a meal, including some lovely outdoor spaces. The recent refurbishment has been done sympathetically and the pub has lost none of its charm. The Trip has an eclectic mix of customers including, while we were there, some really enthusiastic Americans. With all the tourist visitors you really feel you are somewhere special. It seems this is also the celebrity pub of choice for those playing at the Arena across the road.

We started with a fish and chip board (£11.49) between us. It was fabulous and plenty for us to nibble on as a starter while we soaked up the atmosphere. Mains were steak frites (£11.49), lamb shank (£13.99), braised beef and bone marrow pie (£10.99) and a steak burger (£9.95). The food was faultless, particular highlights were the rosemary salted fries, proper suet pie and melt in the mouth lamb. One dessert between us was all we could manage (pathetic, I know!) so we opted for a triple chocolate brownie (£4.95) which was served with mint ice cream. Needless to say it vanished within seconds. I rarely do reviews but boy, am I glad I did this one. Fresh food, fantastic value for money, beautiful presentation and lovely staff. This is one trip I will be making again very soon. © Ali Wale

GRAB A KEBAB D

espite the somewhat dubious reputation of the high street “Doner” kebab, there is much more to this delicious style of cooking than a late night snack after an evening in the pub. Kebabs are in their broadest definition, grilled meat dishes and have their origins in Middle Eastern Cuisine. Many, but not all, are cooked on a skewer and may be chicken, lamb or pork, minced or ground meat, fish and vegetables. Traditionally they would also have been made with mutton, beef or goat. Evidence for the cooking of meat on spits or skewers has been found in many archaeological sites across the Middle East,

Turkey and Greece. The word itself comes from Arabic and means simply “roasted meat”. Many parts of the world have their own take on the kebab. I have a real weakness for the Greek gyros, which remind me of so many lovely holidays on the Greek Islands. But from Africa, the Middle East, India and Pakistan there are so many wonderful kebab recipes to try, you can’t really go wrong with any of them. Here’s a few for you to have a go at home, they can be cooked under a grill or in the oven but they are even better if you can do them over a barbeque!

Abby Brennan is a former cafe owner, she now cooks, writes, speaks and blogs about food and food policy. You can find her @greatfoodclub magazine & at fishwifeskitchen.com

Tanya About Town A

s the summer continues, it’s all about food, festivals and outdoor fun in and around Nottingham.

Hart’s restaurant continue with their 20 Years of Love from Hart’s celebrations. Make sure you celebrate the great British summer and join them as they dine alfresco in The Park Bar Courtyard for their BBQ (26 July & 23 Aug). There’s plenty more outdoor dining around the county too. Following the success of last year, The Big Bake returns to Newstead Abbey (25-27 Aug) and foodies will love the Festival of Food & Drink at Clumber Park (15-16 Sep) both events offer great food, the fabulous producers behind the brands and special guest demonstrations or, if you fancy learning the other side of it, the School of Artisan Food at Welbeck are running many courses throughout the summer which teach you how to make your own favourite products from bread to cheese. Let’s hope the Ice Cream course (26 Sep) comes in handy this summer.

We can’t guarantee the sun but we can certainly guarantee the sand as the Nottingham beach continues until 2 September in Market Square. Watching the trams go by not your thing? The KIT University Chamber Choir hosted the choir and extended a very warm welcome. CMVC look forward to providing similar hospitality when the KIT choir visits Nottingham in 2019. This is the second time that the Carlton choir has represented Nottingham in Karlsruhe. It was 24 years ago, in 1994, when musical contacts were first made with the Bach Choir. This enabled friends in Karlsruhe to rekindle those friendships. Nikolaus Indlekofer told CMVC how much KIT Choir and he had enjoyed this first link with them. He was looking forward to 2019 and the return visit with his choir to Nottingham; he wished everyone well until then. He also thanked the choir’s Social Secretary, Mr. John Warsop for support for planning the visits.

A New Challenge For Me by Helen Jones I have been volunteering independently with various local schools for a number of years – in our line of business we see the talent coming through and are well aware of what employers are looking for. As a mother of four (now adult) children who have also gone through the state system of education I’ve always been mindful of where the shortfalls are. That said, in my experience our local schools do a wonderful job in supporting their students with the limited resources (time and financial) that they have. Recently my role has been formalised and I have been appointed Enterprise Advisor working exclusively with a local secondary school to develop a careers strategy and help them implement it. The school in question faces many challenges but are motivated and dedicated to making this difference. Whilst their focus has to be mainly on academic achievement there are all sorts of young people at this school with varied levels of ambition. And this is what we need to build on. There is nothing more satisfying than helping a student who does not come from an academic background realise that with the right advice and guidance becoming an architect or a doctor is achievable with hard work. We need to give all young adults the correct tools to fulfil their potential. One student said to me “ but Miss I just want to be a bricklayer like my Dad” and I felt sorry that he thought that was somehow not enough. We need bricklayers – otherwise where would we all live? We are all talented and skilled in some way and giving them a sense of worth and aiming to be the best they can possibly be is enough. We have set up career focus groups for every year within the school where we bring students together – not necessarily in friendship groups – just to chat about what they think about the future. Both the school and myself are keen not to preach to the students. Sometimes we have a lot to learn from them too. If you feel this is something you would like to participate in please get in touch. There are many mentoring schemes out there and maybe I can help you find the one that’s right for you. hjones@solosconsultants.co.uk

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team.... Summer Holidays School’s out, flights booked, the summer holiday has begun! While you’re on your break away from home whether it is in the UK or abroad, thieves can use this period to take advantage of your empty home. Take a few steps to help keep your home safe while you’re away. Make sure all access points are secured with good quality locks or bolts. Lock all windows and doors and remove keys to a safe place when you leave the house. Don’t leave valuable items such as laptops and jewellery in view of windows and consider leaving important documents and valuable items with other family members while away. Make use of timer plugs with lamps and radios to make your house seem occupied. Try and let a trusted friend or neighbour know that you’re going to be away from home. You could ask a trusted neighbour or friend to collect post, open and close curtains. Cancel milk and newspaper deliveries if you have them. Think before posting statuses or commenting on social media about going on holiday. This could advertise to thieves that you are away. Make sure you have up-to-date contents and buildings insurance. Ensure that sheds and outbuildings are locked and secured. Use good quality locks on garages

and sheds (ensure latches and hinges undone easily from and where possible they are alarmed.

screws on cannot be the outside) ensure that

Finally, just before you actually set off it’s worth allowing a quiet couple of minutes on the doorstep to check you’ve done all you had to do and taken everything you need with you. Sun, Sea and Safety! When on your holiday, have a great time and follow this advice: As with everything, you are safest where there are other people and where it is well lit so plan your routes. Let someone know where you will be and when you are expected back. Don’t leave bags unattended or pockets open and unzipped. Take extra care in crowded areas as this is where pickpocketing is most likely to take place. Don’t have your home address showing on your luggage for the outward journey, we would advise putting this only on the inside of your cases. Keep note of numbers for the emergency services, the address of where you’re staying and your insurance provider. These could come in handy if you were to have an emergency. Loneliness Can Be A Big Problem

0785 374 0636 “It feels good to know I am making something positive happen for others, that may not happen without me”. Getting older can magnify feelings of loneliness as friends and relatives move away, we may experience more significant health problems, lose a partner or find it more difficult to get out and about. Rushcliffe CVS invites you to contact their befriending scheme – Rushcliffe Befriends. The idea is that a carefully chosen volunteer spends time with an isolated person on a regular basis. Volunteers visit an individual in their own home or spend time with them out and about, helping them to participate in activities of their choice until they feel able to continue independently. Volunteers and users of the service must be aged 50+ and a Rushcliffe resident. Held in high esteem, a user of the scheme explains “My volunteer is a godsend. She understands me and that is really helpful. It is a good fit and gives me something to look forward to”.
