Christmas e r fo e B e r a The Nightm : s w ie v e R Bur ton l Crossover a n o s a e S A With Christmas imminent, and the spooky trick or treat palooza of Halloween done and dusted, what better way to celebrate than a festive movie that mixes the two holidays into one strange, mesmerising and explosive cocktail. Ever get so good at your job it’s now boring? Well that is exactly how Jack Skeleton, the king of Halloween Town, feels. That is until Jack discovers a set of portals to other mystical worlds. The first one he sets his bony fingers on is Christmas Town, and Jack becomes enamoured with its bright festive cheer and gleeful warmth. But Jack doesn’t just want to enjoy this town, he wants to be the king of it too. And so begins his quest to give Santa a well-earned break and become the jolly man in red himself. Originally released in 1994, every frame of this movie looks like a whimsical piece of art. The Nightmare Before Christmas was made before the glut of CGI that we enjoy today, making the beautiful stop motion animation even more impressive. At its heart, as well as being a Christmas film, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a musical, and a great one at that. From the infectiously fun Halloween Town opening, to the iconic glee of Jack discovering Christmas for the first time, each song seamlessly fits into the story, and will have even the most jaded viewer tapping their toes. What makes this film stand out from the other Christmas animated musicals is how innovative the concept is. Dropping Halloween and Christmas into a blender and seeing what comes out is a joy to see and gives everyone something to love. Having such a strange mix up really allows producer Tim Burton’s style to shine. From imagination sparking concepts like the two faced mayor to seeing a werewolf come to life in this style, the artistic direction of this movie is spellbinding.

Don’t let the Halloween atmosphere fool you though, The Nightmare Before Christmas is still full of that magical warmth that comes with every Christmas movie ever made. Moonlit romance, buckets full of joy that fill your eyes with happy tears and a valuable life lesson to be learned, Jack Skeleton’s antics have it all. Overall, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a spectacular celebration of all things Halloween and Christmas. Capturing the joy that comes with the mistletoed holiday perfectly through its energetic up-beat musical numbers and displaying the shudder-inducing frights of that spooky October night through its uniquely iconic character designs; the balancing act done by this movie is a blast to enjoy again and again, on an annual cycle even, say once a year, every December. The Nightmare Before Christmas = 9/10 © Sam Burton (aged 21)

The Tinsel and Turkey Tale Christmas bulldozes its way into our lives ever earlier. I let it wash over me and get through it in a haze of gin and chocolate orange. The Turkey I remember the first year my dad cooked the Christmas dinner. We were all starving and he proudly bought the turkey out and began carving it but he kept hitting bone and all we could get off the bird were pretty dismal bits of brown meat. He put it down to the fact it must have been an old bird (those were the days when your employer gave you a turkey at Christmas). Later that afternoon when tradition dictates it’s buffet time (usually an hour after you’ve finished dinner) we flipped the turkey over to see if there was any more meat on the other side - and Turkeys... lo-and-behold two  are related to the T-Rex beautiful plump  sleep in trees breasts and  have periscopic vision enough meat to keep us in turkey  have two stomachs sandwiches for the whole of January!! How you can cook a turkey upside down still baffles me to this day. The Tree Stage One – Getting the tree upright. Gary will spend the best part of a day trying to find the tree stand. Then saw half the trunk and branches off to even get it into the living room. Once the tree is in the stand he will spend another couple of hours levelling it up. Then a dog will knock the tree over. And we’re back to stage one…This is a pattern that repeats itself

every year. So by 8pm he refuses to help with Stage Two - decorating it. Apparently that’s my job! And every year I kid myself that this year I will do better. I pour myself a sherry. Put on the “Now Christmas” CD and begin…lights have to go on first. To say I hate doing it is an understatement. The tree is usually well over 6 foot and I am 5ft 2”. You do the maths. The kids are kind and usually just laugh at my pathetic efforts. The end result is usually me in tears, the tree half done and everyone else in hysterics at my ridiculous behaviour. By midnight I’ve lost interest and just chuck the baubles on any old how and cover every available space with tinsel, vowing “never again”! The Family Get Together Last year it was the turn of my mum to entertain us all. Including our two dogs. What could possibly go wrong? Harry was dressed as a Christmas Tree and Herbie in a Christmas jumper. Hilarious, we thought. Within 5 minutes of arriving it all kicked off. Herbie’s Christmas jumper was hanging off the chickens enclosure (minus said dog) and he was inside with a chicken between his jaws looking a bit perplexed as to what to do next!! Gary spotted him just in time and went into SAS mode. With a phone in one hand and a beer in the other he wrestled the chicken from the dogs clutches. Tense times as we all sat down to dinner. Cracker pulling commenced and Gary had to read his joke out; “Why did the chicken cross the road?”... Merry Christmas everyone! © Ali Wale

Built on a former riding school and farm, Yorkshire Wildlife Park, commonly referred to as YWP, has come a long way since it first opened its doors in April 2009. A dynamic centre for conservation and welfare, the park has over 400 animals and over 70 different species of animal.A magical atmosphere will surround the park this Christmas, where visitors can get almost face to face with some of the world's most beautiful and endangered animals, including Tigers, Amur Leopards, African lions, and the country's only Polar Bears. So why not invite the whole family to get involved in the festive fun this year at the award-winning YWP?

Their ever-popular Christmas Fairs are lined up for families and children to enjoy this December, all in an enchanting walkthrough safari adventure. Held over two action-packed weekends on the 8-9th and 15-16th of December, the fairs are the perfect way to get into the festive spirit. A fully heated marquee will be home to hundreds of lively stalls which will offer arts and crafts, delicious food and drink and personalised gifts. The park will come alive with entertainment, live music and Father Christmas welcoming everyone into his Grotto. Children will be greeted by a Christmas Elf and write a letter for Father Christmas, before entering the grotto to hand deliver their note to Santa's cuddly Polar Bear helper. So come and join a full cast of Christmas characters in the 100-acre park, at Branton, near Doncaster spreading the season's goodwill.

The West Bridgford Colts Raptors under 11s team are playing in a brand new red and black striped kit thanks to sponsorship from Your Local Motors. Raptors are the current Sunday league Yell Cup holders and are looking strong this season already. Grant Baker, Director at West Bridgford media business Your Local Motors, said, ‘I’m really proud to be able to sponsor this fantastic team. I’ve been involved in Colts for over 15 years with my three sons and it’s great to support grassroots football. Team sports benefit children in so many ways and to see the boys developing as a team has been amazing. My son Mylo plays for the team so it feels extra special to see him in the new kit.’ The 9 a-side team have been playing together since 2013 when they first competed in an under 7 league. They now compete in Division 1 in the local Young Elizabethan League. Raptors Coach, Phil Traquair said, ‘The kits really add to the sense of belonging within the team and you can really see how proud the boys are wearing it.’

From the West Bridgford & South Trent Division, Janice Culley-Oliver was delighted to collect one of the first 60year service awards to be presented in Notts. Long service awards also went to Glynis Neal (30 years), Barbara Miller (30 years) and Claire Spencer (40 years) whilst local Leaders Susan Mahon and Frances Longhurst were presented with Oak Leaf Awards to reflect their exceptional dedication and enthusiasm. Held at Mansfield’s Portland College, the tea party gave County Commissioner Jackie Brocklehurst the opportunity to present awards to over 50 members and friends of Girlguiding across Nottinghamshire. ‘I’m proud to say that the Long Service Awards conferred today recognise a grand total of over 860 years of service to Girlguiding, and it was a privilege to publicly celebrate such exceptional commitment,’ said Jackie afterwards. ‘Helping young people get the most out of life is rewarding in so many ways. Our volunteers not only benefit from training, mentoring and invaluable experience but, as shown by this afternoon’s tea party, we also have a lot of fun along the way!’

Students Tackle The Faraday Challenge!

Students from five schools converged on The Nottingham Emmanuel School in West Bridgford to take part in The Faraday Challenge, each attempting to design the most efficient and innovative solution to an engineering task. In the running were teams representing The Nottingham Emmanuel School, Bluecoat Wollaton, Bluecoat Aspley, Bluecoat Beechdale Academy and Ellis Guildford School. All striving to win the task and secure their school’s place on the project’s national league table of winning entrants. Phil Hart from the Institution of Engineering and Technology ran the challenge and said that 178 schools will eventually take part, with the top five in the tables competing in a National Final in Edinburgh next summer. Phil says the project aims to reinvigorate interest in engineering as a subject. “I hope that students walk out of the door today with a much wider understanding of what the world of engineering is about, so they can either explore it more, or even to discover that it isn’t for them!.” Matthew Ashmore, an Academic Mentor at The Nottingham Emmanuel School hosted the event and said, “All of the students were very capable, even though the complex nature of the challenge could easily have deterred them.” The winning team designed a motorised truck for delivering a telescope for launch, using a prism shape to hold the telescope securely on its journey and which opened at the top for access.

A highly-respected TV personality, Anita Rani is a household name as one of the presenters of the BBC One series Countryfile, and regularly appears in and presents the BBC’s One Show. Anita has also presented programmes including Bollywood: The World’s Biggest Film Industry and Watchdog. In 2015 Anita was also a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing. Rani said of narrating Blue Planet II – Live In Concert: “I am really honoured to have the role of host on the Blue Planet II Live In Concert arena tour. Accompanied by the original immersive television music score by Bleeding Fingers Music, composed by Hans Zimmer, Jacob Shea and David Fleming, the concert will be performed live by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by Matthew Freeman. What dads really want for Christmas Unbelievably, Christmas is just around the corner. At the time of writing there are no mince pies in the shops and I haven’t had to dodge past the wrapping paper selections in the supermarket. But have no fear, it’ll be here quicker than an express train of sugar-filled children excited by the possibilities of getting everything they’ve asked Santa for. But the question remains “what do dads really want for Christmas”? Significant others take note, this year the usual half-baked selection of socks, razors, golf tees and a set of craft ales in a presentation box isn’t going to cut it. I’ve done the leg work, asked some dads, and this is what they want:

1. Time in the bathroom without interruption. I’m going to let you all into a secret, dads go to the toilet to escape the kids. And at Christmas maybe even your family. We don’t have irritable bowel, we’re probably just catching up on the football scores. Unfortunately we’ve been rumbled by the kids who, as soon as dad is ensconced on the porcelain throne, come knocking. “Are you in there”? “Will you be long”? “Are you having a number one or a number two”?

2. A Lego kit that stays together. I was never massively into Lego as a child, but I always enjoyed it when I got a chance to play. Nowadays my house resembles a warehouse of the stuff. There are kits everywhere. Most of them are in a varying state of repair. If I built Lego without children I imagine I’d have a great collection, probably fully built, and definitely with the right parts. So when the kids decide they want to rebuild some stuff do you think we can find that one piece in the assortment of bits? You know the piece, the smallest and most vital one. The one that has to be in grey and absolutely can’t be substituted for a different colour.

3. The Great Escape Actually, this should read ‘any film that dad really wants to watch’. We’re not asking for much, just a couple of hours to watch a film where there’s no-one constantly asking who that person is, what’s going on, and all manner of

questions that are stopping you enjoying the actual film. And ideally this should be alone. Let’s be honest, if we can watch the film alone then no-one else will decide they’re bored halfway through and demand everyone stops watching. And if we’re alone we don’t have to worry about whether the film is suitable for everyone in the family, and watch Steve McQueen attempt to jump the barbed wire (because I always think he’ll make it!).

4. Sleep This is quite straightforward: a night of proper shut-eye. The sort of sleep where you don’t hit the sack with one eye open. Where you don’t get woken at 4 in the morning by a child who has decided now is the time to be awake. Where you don’t race out of bed having heard your child scream only to find them fast asleep and tucked up safely in their room, unlike you. The sort of sleep where you don’t feel guilty for having a lie-in. This may be the best gift anyone could give.

If you’ve read this and still think we want something from a shop trust us, we really don’t. If we wanted anything that badly we’d have probably bought it ourselves already this year. And the consensus is don’t buy us clothes. We know you mean well, but you might as well ask our mothers to buy them for us.

Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

The Railway I have eaten at The Railway before so I knew what a treat we were in for. I arrived Friday night with all the NG girls to a packed pub and a very warm welcome. The Railway is a superb village pub, thoughtfully decorated with a great atmosphere. We were shown to our table by Suzannah, the manager. After an appetiser of mixed olives, warm focaccia with balsamic oil and aioli we decided on two starters, four mains and two puddings – just in case our eyes were bigger than our bellies! (As they usually are!) The Cheese on toast, Brie de Meaux on grilled sourdough with pickled mushrooms and truffle dressing (£8.95) was sublime. We all agreed it was our favourite. I have never had anything like it, and that’s why you go out for meals. We also had the Creedy Calver duck liver parfait with English plum relish and chargrilled focaccia (£6.50). The rich parfait married perfectly with the relish. What a start! We all had a different main: the Railway burger with smoked pancetta, mature cheddar, gherkin, gem lettuce and fries (£12.95) was huge! The Creedy Calver duck leg, savoy cabbage, parsnip, duck fat potato and Starkey’s blackberry sauce (£16.95) had us all cooing in awe. It looked so pretty and tasted as good as it looked. Roast chicken breast, peppercorn sauce, fries, roast tomato, mushroom and green salad (£13.95) was a classic dish elevated to a new level and finally the braised shoulder of mutton, balsamic red onion, bok choi, goats cheese and creamed potatoes (£17.50) was the star of the show. Melt in the mouth meat, creamiest potato I have ever eaten, flavours I have never tried together, it was unforgettable. For dessert we had a warm tart of Lowdham quince pear with crème fraiche and spiced honey (£7.95) and hot Tanzanie chocolate

fondant with yoghurt mousse and raspberry sorbet (£7.50) and a last minute treat turned up in the way of a sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream (£6.95). It is rare that four women are quiet at the same time but the table was silent while we got lost in a chocolate, toffee, pear, creamy heaven! Last time I visited the Railway I gushed about the food and this is still the case. It was faultless and fantastic. The acoustic duo playing in the background was a lovely touch. I would heartily recommend a visit to this award winning pub. Be sure to book though. They are in demand. Since my last visit The Railway has achieved more than owners, David Hage and Mark Osborne had envisioned after winning a hat-trick of awards. Best new Gastro Pub in Nottingham’s Bar & Restaurant Awards, Best Public House in the Nottinghamshire Food & Drink awards and finally East Midlands pub of the Year! They also do a great value set menu available lunch 12-2.30pm and early evening 5-6.30pm.

There is nothing better than receiving a gift that someone has spent time and effort making for you. Every year I make a hamper for my step-dad and he loves it. Usually it includes some fudge (see recipe opposite), chutney, piccalilli, home-made biscuits, jam and last year I also added some chicken liver pate. There is also usually a bottle of something alcoholic. He gives me the basket back after Christmas ready for the following year and the tradition carries on. If you make your edible delights in batches then you will have plenty for everyone and some for yourself as well! It does require a bit of forward planning, so about now I start with the chutney and any pickled

gifts as these need a few weeks before they’re ready to eat. I start saving nice jars and bottles – just sterilise in the dishwasher or use boiling water and dry in a very low oven. Decorate the goodies with pretty labels, use festive gift bags and pretty packaging. Lakeland have loads of great ideas and Wilko’s also have a good selection. All the recipes I have shared are tried and tested and really easy to make (I don’t do complicated!). Have fun and remember to save some for yourself!!!

Blackberry and Apple Gin

Chocolate Orange Fudge

Chorizo Jam

600g blackberries 600g sugar 600g apples (roughly chopped, peel, core & all) 3 x bay leafs 3 x 700ml cheap gin ( we used Aldi) 3 x large kilner jars - sterilised

350g dark chocolate - broken into squares 397g tin condensed milk 25g butter 1 tbsp orange zest (about 2 x oranges) 60g pecans - broken (optional)

500g chorizo – sliced into half moons 2 x red onions – sliced 2 garlic cloves – crushed 85g light muscovado sugar 3 tbsp sherry 2 tbsp maple syrup 2 tsp soya sauce 2 tbsp tomato puree 100ml water

Method: In each kilner jar place 200g of blackberries, apples and sugar. Add a bay leaf to each jar along with a whole bottle of gin. Seal the jars and shake to mix. Place them in a cool, dark place and shake every few days. They should be ready after 4 weeks. Have some nice gift bottles at the ready (sterilised). Pass the gin through muslin to strain and bottle.

Method: Butter a foil tray. Mine was 25cm x 14cm. In a saucepan, melt the chocolate, condensed milk and butter on a low heat. Stir often. When melted, add orange zest and nuts, if using. Mix well and pour into the foil tray. Smooth over and leave to cool. Once cool, refrigerate. Once set, cut into small squares. You can put the fudge in gift bags or jars. Remember to store in the fridge. Can be frozen and eaten straight from the freezer.

Fry chorizo in a large saucepan until it starts to release oil and goes golden. Remove with a slotted spoon to a dish and set aside. Cook the onions gently in the chorizo oil over a low heat until soft. Add the garlic, sugar, sherry, syrup, soy sauce and tomato puree to the pan along with the chorizo. Mix well and add the water. Cook slowly for 45 mins until thick and syrupy. Allow to cool. Tip into a food processor. Pulse until the chorizo is in really small pieces. Spoon into sterilised jars and leave to cool completely before storing in the fridge.

TOP TIPS FOR NEW YEAR FITNESS

At the start of the new year, most of us make a subconscious promise to ourselves to make some better health choices. After all, we want to be around as long as possible to share many more social and festive times with loved ones. How we look after our bodies really does matter.

My Top Tips for Making an Impact on Your Health 1. Make small adjustments to start with. Don’t completely alter your diet or double your exercise routine hoping it will produce a result. You will fail before you really get going. 2. Everything altered or improved is an additional external stress on the body so remember to take your time when making changes. 3. All changes should be maintainable, if they aren’t then they won’t produce the result you are really searching for. 4. Following the latest new year craze diet isn’t going to work if you can’t maintain the effort once you achieve your goal. Entering back into old habits will produce old results. 5. MAKE A PLAN…. Or hire a coach to educate you and guide you to the result you’ve promised yourself. Asking for help is the best way to succeed. 6. And most of all...be patient. Remember Rome wasn’t built in a day. It may take months to see positive changes, but it’ll be worth it.

Email: info@strengthyphysique.co.uk Website: www.strengthphysique.co.uk

If you follow these principles for any fitness or nutritional changes you make in the new year I can assure you, as an online coach whose passion is producing sustainable body and mind transformations, these are key to succeeding with any plan you choose to embark on.

Exercise Start with the minimum amount of days you can realistically commit to each week. If you say five but can only manage five sessions once a month, then commit to three sessions and build around this. The disappointment of not hitting your target could leave you in a negative state of mind and you could slip back into making poor choices. Adding exercise into your life shouldn’t be complicated. We can all find time to exercise. We waste lots of hours on social media, so why not walk for an hour instead? You can still check your device or listen to some music! That’s around 300-400 calories a day burnt. Do this for 4-5 days a week and you will burn 1lb of actual body fat within two weeks without even altering your current diet.

Whatever health improvements you choose to change this new year, please make them enjoyable and sustainable, you will have less to worry about if it becomes part of your daily life.

Happy New Year !

Don’t settle for a diet plan health instead

A Snack A Day

The build up to Christmas is a truly magical time. From the decorations to the chill in the air and the happy family times, there is a lot that the month of December has going for it. Perhaps the pinnacle is the food, the glorious, rich food, that can be enjoyed without guilt, because, well, let’s face it, it’s Christmas and what else is Christmas for? And, thick Christmas jumpers hide all manner of food related sins! There is one work-related habit, however, that can make staying healthier during the festive season a lot easier: paying attention to snacking. As tempting as it is to buy that giant tub of **** (insert Christmas themed chocolate/biscuits/ sweets here), to treat the rest of your colleagues, consider the manner in which they will be consumed. If we are honest with ourselves, the majority of snacking is sheer boredom. “I’m bored of this spreadsheet, pass me a biscuit.” “Crunchy crisps will add interest to the next 20 emails that I have to send.” “I need a break, chocolate will signify that I’m having a break.” That inner self-talk is so faint, we don’t even notice why we are snacking but it’s evident that physiologically we don’t actually need extra food to fuel several more hours of sitting down. Similarly, the odd Christmas biscuit might be nice but the benefit of it is limited. Well, that’s if you view unnecessary weight gain as a benefit. If you can’t go without that snack or really want to treat your work mates, there are other ways. Snacking healthier has a fair few advantages, and before you stop reading, I’m not talking about fruit.

With the rise of food trends such as “eating clean” and “lean in 15”, nutrition is fast becoming a hot topic. from your Neighbourhood Beat Team.... It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

How can I stay safe out and about?

Nottinghamshire Police work hard over Christmas to keep you and your family safe, but there are a few steps you can take to help us.

Stay alert and be aware of what’s going on around you.

Christmas shopping... Stay alert and be aware of what’s going on around you. Keep valuables in inside pockets of clothing or bags. Only carry the cash and cards that you need. Always shield the PIN pad when entering your PIN. Avoid going back to your car to leave your shopping part-way through your trip. If you have to keep presents in the car, make sure they are out of view in the boot, the car is locked, and keep the receipts with you. Shopping with children? Make sure they learn to go to a store attendant or security guard if you get separated. How can I keep my home safe? Don’t leave presents under your Christmas tree if they are visible from windows or doors.

Deter pickpockets and muggers. Keep purses, wallets, phones and keys close (inside your front trouser pocket or inside your coat) and never leave your bags unattended. When you’re out for the evening? • NEVER leave your things unattended. • Make sure someone knows where you are going and when you’ll be home. • Avoid walking home alone and never with someone you don’t know well. • Drink responsibly, arrange for a member of your group to be a designated driver. • Check your taxi drivers ID and never get into an unlicensed taxi. For more advice and crime prevention information please visit our website http://www. nottinghamshire.police.uk/advice Have a safe and enjoyable Christmas from everyone at Nottinghamshire Police.

Make sure you keep your doors and windows locked at all times. Lights on! Use timer switches or turn the radio on to make your house look occupied.

Rushcliffe Befriends – Local Help for Local People

Make a Difference with The Beyond Diagnosis Service in Nottinghamshire The Macmillan Beyond Diagnosis Service, in partnership with Self Help UK, provides practical and emotional support to people affected by cancer.

We know that feeling alone can take its toll. It can result in increased anxiety, depression and stress along with loss of confidence and self-esteem. Social inclusion can make a fundamental difference. Louise retired in June 2015 after having worked in care homes for 12 years. After retiring, she found that she was missing the company of older people and wanted to do something about it. She contacted Rushcliffe Befriends to enquire about becoming a volunteer befriender and has now been involved with the scheme for 3 years. A befriender visits a person in their home, provides company and supports a person to attend groups in the community until they can continue independently. We need more volunteers to help us deliver this vital service. If you are over 50 and want to help us tackle loneliness in the local community, please get in touch on 0115 969 9060 or email befriends@rushcliffecvs.org. uk. The same details can be used if you are over 50, experiencing isolation and interested in using the service.

The service is currently available to people living across Nottingham City, Mansfield, Ashfield, Newark and Sherwood and has recently been launched in Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe. This service is delivered by a team of specially trained volunteers who provide confidential one-to-one support. Trained volunteers can offer emotional support which may include a chat over a cup of tea or the phone, or practical support such as help with shopping or going out to a café. We work closely with clinical teams to ensure that any individual who is referred to the Beyond Diagnosis service is well supported throughout their time accessing the service. We are looking for volunteers who can donate 1-2 hours of their time a week to make a difference to the lives of local people living with cancer. All our volunteers attend specific training and complete a DBS criminal records check. For more information regarding becoming a volunteer, please get in touch by: E-mail – volunteering@selfhelp.org.uk Telephone – 0115 911662 Website - https://www.selfhelp.org.uk/ projects/macmillan-beyond-diagnosis
