Kerry’s Fresh:

Delivering to your area now! The Kerry family have been supplying the people of Nottingham with fresh fruit and vegetables for 131 years. That’s an awful lot of apples. But it is the next 131 years that boss Dean – the fourth generation of this popular local company - is thinking about with the launch of their brand new website. Kerry’s are evolving and in late September will launch an online store that will offer delivery to homes and offices across Nottingham. Dean said: “I am really excited to launch this new side of our business, along with my wife Gillian, son Aidan and the rest of the hardworking Kerry’s Fresh team. “We pride ourselves on providing our customers with high-quality produce, and can now do that in a way that is convenient and still inexpensive for them.” Customers will be able to choose from a variety of over 150 products, as well as a selection of fruit, veg and salad boxes, all at affordable prices. Business boxes have been specifically designed to hold 50 pieces of fruit, separate from one another to ensure that they do not bruise and are in the best condition possible for when they arrive to brighten up your workplace. Kerry’s will cater to the delivery needs of each business where possible. Home orders will be processed via postcode. Your area will be delivered to once a week, and your produce packed on the same morning to guarantee freshness. Delivery is free on orders over £15. Home boxes range from £8.99 to £17.99, while business boxes start at £20, with the best seasonal fruit as optional extras for an additional £5. All NG readers are entitled to 50% off their first order using the discount code opposite.

The NG2 & NG3 delivery day will be a

Mist and Mellow Fruitfulness As summer draws to a close and the nights become longer, the smell of Autumn is in the air. Harvest Festivals are celebrated, many of us are making jam and chutney by the lorry-load to use up the last of the summer fruits and those green tomatoes that never ripen, as well as all the windfall apples, plums and pears. Autumn also heralds a range of ancient festivals, Halloween of course, (the modern version largely imported from the US) but also a range of quirky local rituals that are still practised. In some villages, barrels of tar are set alight and paraded through

the main street, in some places cider is poured over apple tree roots and bizarrely dressed troupes ward off evil spirits with “Soul Cakes”. Halloween itself has its roots in a pagan Celtic festival “Samhain” and the Christian Festival of All Saints Day (All Hallows), when prayers were offered for the souls of the dead. Soon it will be Bonfire Night, with traditional toffee and warming soups and then, Winter will be upon us again. Make the most of the season of “mists and mellow fruitfulness” with these seasonal recipes.

Autumn Berry Flaugnarde

Fig and Dolcelatte Tarts

What better time than the end of Summer and the beginning of Autumn to use up the last of the soft fruits and berries in this delicious and easy dessert. Not quite a true Flaugnarde and a bit like a traditional cherry clafoutis, this is cheap to make and perfect for using up a glut.

Fresh figs are a fantastic and under-used addition to the Autumn table. Their high sugar content makes them perfect to serve with something strong and salty, like blue cheese or prosciutto.

Ingredients A little softened butter for greasing 400g or so of mixed seasonal berries (or you could use plums) For the batter:50g ground almonds 2 tbsp plain flour 100g golden caster sugar 2 eggs 2 egg yolks 250ml double cream Heat oven to 190oC fan or 170oC/ gas 5. Grease a 23cm flan dish or shallow pie dish (not loose bottomed) and scatter the berries over the base. Place all the batter ingredients in a mixing bowl and whisk until smooth, pour it over the fruits and bake for around 30 minutes until risen and golden brown. Serve warm with a drizzle of single cream.

(makes 6)

Ingredients 2 sheets filo pastry (22cm x 25cm square) A little melted butter 3 ripe figs 100g creamy blue cheese, I used Dolcelatte 1 tsp lemon juice 3 fresh sage leaves, finely chopped Sprinkling of ground paprika Preheat the oven to 190oC/Gas6. Brush two sheets of filo with butter and place on top of each other. Cut into 12 equal squares. Put the squares together in pairs on top of each other at a 45 degree angle (so they make a star shape). Press into the holes of a muffin tin or Yorkshire pudding tin. Bake in the oven for around 6/7 mins or until just golden brown and crisp (keep a close eye as they are so easy to burn!). Transfer to a baking tray. Chop the figs into small pieces and divide between the filo cups. Put the cheese, sage, lemon juice into a bowl. Mash down with a fork, season with black pepper, then spoon a small amount of the cheese

mixture on top of the fig. Sprinkle lightly with paprika. Bake in the oven for a further 5 minutes or until the cheese has just melted.

Apple “in and out” pudding Ingredients (1 apple per person) 4 evenly sized Bramley cooking apples 75g unsalted butter 75g soft brown sugar approx 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, approx half teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg 175g plain flour, cold water, 3 eggs, pinch salt, 450ml full fat milk (more or less) Pre-heat oven to around 200oC or 190oC fan oven. Peel (or not) and core apples. Cream together the butter and sugar and add the nutmeg and cinnamon, or whichever spices you are using. Fill the centre of the apples with this mixture and place them in a large buttered oven-proof dish. It needs to be a deep dish so the batter can rise to almost cover the apples. Blend the flour and salt with a little cold water and then add the eggs and enough milk to make a thick creamy batter (slightly thicker than a Yorkshire pudding batter). Pour this over the apples and bake in your pre-heated oven for around 45 minutes, until the apples are soft and oozy and the batter is risen. It should have a golden crisp surface and a soft centre. Serve immediately, with custard or cream. But beware, it will be

extremely hot!

About to pop after two very generous courses, we ordered ice cream for dessert. The kids ordered fluffwich soldiers and chocolate dip. Home Grown Olympic Talent Shines 5,812 That’s the number of miles from Nottingham to

Rio de Janeiro. A total of 24 athletes made the trip from the East Midlands competing in various events from equestrian to table tennis. Here are five atheletes that impressed at this year’s games.

Michael Whitaker – Equestrian

Chris Adcock – Badminton Competing at the Olympics from the age of 24 in Los Angeles, Michael’s equestrian achievements include a Team Gold medal and individual Silver medal at the European Championships in 1989. Whitaker’s game regrettably ended due to his horse Cassionato showing symptoms of colic. Despite this, Michael did manage to come 12th in the team jumping finals, and finished 8th in the individual qualifiers. Going into the Olympics, Chris had already claimed a mixed doubles gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with his wife Gabby, and went into the games with high hopes of collecting a medal. Unfortunately, the 27-year-old from Ravenshead crashed out to Polish opponents Robert Mateusiak and Nadiezda Zieba. Adcock is expecting to compete at Tokyo in 2020, with the ambition of reaching a final. Helen Richardson-Walsh – Hockey

Sam Walker – Table Tennis Sam’s journey to Rio began at just two years old, his dad using a piano stool to allow him to see the table tennis table. Just 3 months prior to the games, Walker was part of the England team that picked up Bronze at the World Team Championships in Malaysia. That success continued into Rio, Sam and his team (Drinkhall and Pitchford) breezing past first round opponents France before losing 3-0 against eventual gold medallists China. Worksop-born Walker will have his sights firmly set on Tokyo 2020 to put some wrongs right. Molly Renshaw – Swimming

Although not born in Nottingham, Helen spent her childhood in the NG area, playing for West Bridgford and Sherwood Hockey Clubs before joining Leicester Hockey Club and eventually earning her first England cap in 1999, age 17. A bronze in London 4 years ago was the perfect platform for Helen, and sister Kate (captain) to launch their 2016 medal bid. The squad had a rollercoaster journey to the final, before beating the Netherlands in a penalty shoot out to claim the team’s first ever Gold medal.

20-year-old Molly Renshaw competed in her first games this summer after agonisingly missing the qualifying time in 2012. Born in Mansfield, Renshaw set a new record of 2:22:33 while qualifying for the 200m breaststroke final. While Molly swam a superb semi-final, she struggled to keep up with Japanese champion Rie Kaneto, falling almost 3 seconds behind the leader, finishing 6th. A young athlete with plenty of talent, the future of British swimming looks bright.

Rushcliffe Community and Voluntary Service is delighted to have secured 3 years funding to continue and extend the Rushcliffe Befriends scheme, supporting Rushcliffe residents who are over 50 and experiencing social isolation. Our volunteer befrienders can help someone become involved with a local group, or can provide company by visiting at home or by going out, perhaps for a walk or a coffee. “Everyone enjoys a natter with a friendly person who isn’t judgemental or critical and who can offer a listening ear and conversation. In some cases it is a lifeline to those who are the most isolated” says Louise, one of our befrienders. We need more volunteers so we can help more people. To volunteer, all you need is to be aged 50+, live in Rushcliffe, have a few hours a week to spare and want to help local older people. Volunteers receive training, support and expenses. It’s a great way to meet interesting people, make a difference and have fun! For information about volunteering or receiving this service, please contact us on 0115 9699060 or email befriends@ rushcliffecvs.org.uk. Rushcliffe Befriends is supported by The National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund.

Second time lucky?

This month, Tilly dog and Venus cat are asking for homes. Sadly, this is Tilly’s second appeal: she was adopted last year from Animal Accident Rescue into a loving home, but family health problems mean she was returned to the charity. Previously attacked by dogs, she is happiest being the only dog with no children, but is used to chickens, cats and horses! At 8 years, this gentle Collie-x-Whippet needs an experienced owner to continue building her confidence. Gentle too, is 9-month old Venus – with fantastic fur and matching personality, she loves humans and plays hide-and-seek with her fosterer. She is happiest being an only cat in an adult household. Both are wormed, flea-treated, spayed, micro-chipped, house/litter-trained, currently vaccinated – with Venus “snap” FIV/FeLV blood-tested (clear). To discover more on Tilly, contact the Dog Adoption Officer on 07511-891989; for Venus contact the Cat Adoption Officer on 0115-9985063 after 6pm. Neither number must be used for any other purpose – or email the relevant volunteer at admin@aaru. org.uk, who will reply as soon as possible. All potential adoptions need a successful homecheck, with no cat-rehoming on or near busy roads. Totally reliant on volunteers and donations, the charity urgently needs more cat and dog fosterers. It does not deal with healthy strays/ unwanted pets; but helps neglected, injured or vulnerable animals and birds. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should leave a detailed message on 0115-9321555. For all animals needing homes visit www.animalaccident. org.uk.

Great GCSE Results at Nottingham Emmanuel School

There was great excitement as students at Nottingham Emmanuel School celebrated another year of improved results with well over 60% of the total entries at A*-C and with more than 15% of entries at the top grades of A* and A. The overall pass rate was 99%, with 60% of students securing the gold standard of five or more higher level passes, recognised as the entry criteria on to A level programmes. There were some outstanding individual performances, including Kinga Sitkiewicz who achieved 5A*, 5A and 2B and says she would like to go into banking or accounting eventually. Another student, Linzi Beardsley achieved 4A* 6A and 1B and collected her results with brother Luke by her side. Other notable achievements were Chloe Kent with 4A* 4A and 3B, Tayiba Zaman with 4A*2A and 4B, Mei-Yan Lee with 3A* 7A and 1B and Rebecca Paul who achieved 3A* 7A and 1B. Andy Smith, Vice Principal at Nottingham Emmanuel School said, “I am immensely proud of the achievements of our students, who have worked so hard and shown such dedication to their studies. We at Emmanuel are of course very keen to see outstanding academic success as we have today, but we are equally proud of the work our students undertake in their service to others and in their willingness and desire to engage in a much wider curriculum, beyond the purely academic.”

Don’t settle for a diet plan, upgrade your health instead With the rise of food trends such as “eating clean” and “lean in 15”, nutrition is fast becoming a hot topic. We asked Nottingham based nutritionist, Eva Humphries, to give us the low down on what you can expect from a nutritional therapy consultation.

Don’t expect a diet plan

comprehensive assessment of your relative requirements are made so the advice given is completely unique to you. Your digestive health, energy levels, hormones and eating habits are all considered alongside any symptoms you may be presenting with. This may sound like a lot of data but in reality you just get to spend an hour talking about yourself.

Let’s get the biggest misconception out of the way: the end result of nutritional therapy is not a diet plan. Sure, you will get some recommendations of what to eat but not in a prescriptive manner. Behind every nutritionist is a real person that, occasionally, eats cake, chocolate and all of that tasty stuff you will likely crave. We know what a perfect diet looks like but also understand this may not be realistic for everyone.

Evidence based science

For this reason, there are no perfect diet plans, only steady progress that will get you closer to your health goals.

What can nutritional therapy help with?

It’s personal There is another huge issue with diet plans: they don’t take into account individual requirements. During a nutritional therapy consultation, a

Qualified nutritional therapists will look for the clinical research to support your health goals. This nerdy data, is the real scientific evidence that underpins each recommendation made. So, if we tell you to eat two more portions of green veg a day, be sure to know there is a research paper to back up that recommendation.

Nutritional therapy is about upgrading your overall health. Energy, digestive and skin health, as well as cognitive function may all be improved with the help of a qualified nutritional therapist.

Eva Humphries is a Nottingham based nutritionist, founder of Wholefood Warrior and appreciator of good food. Eva holds health and wellbeing talks on topics including the basics of nutrition, improving energy and detoxing. Visit www.wholefoodwarrior.co.uk for more information.

Primary children get a look at Nottingham Emmanuel’s state of the art facilities Children from primary schools all around the county have been enjoying lessons at The Nottingham Emmanuel School to help familiarise themselves with the secondary school which draws it’s student body from an astonishing 40 primary schools from around Nottinghamshire. Senga Hill, Academic Mentor from The N o t t i n g h a m Emmanuel School said that the ‘Getting to know you’ events are designed to help ease the transition of pupils to their new school and are a good opportunity for the children and their parents to get to know staff and the school buildings. She said, “All our Year 6 students are invited and encouraged to attend one or both of our ‘Getting to know you’ events as they come from schools far and wide within the city, county and beyond. The event which is just one part of our well-developed transition programme, is of benefit to all of our new students, - but is especially so where they are the only pupil from their Primary school who will come to Emmanuel.” At the events the pupils have an opportunity to meet fellow pupils, current Nottingham Emmanuel students and their new teachers too. The classes on offer allow the pupils to use a greater range of facilities than is available at a primary school and they enjoy classes in English, science, music, computing, geography and drama- and not forgetting a little bit of an ice breaker in the form of ‘Getting to know you’ bingo run by Nottingham Emmanuel students acting as ‘Buddies’ to the newcomers.

Rise in Silver Divorces Leads to Increased Wills Disputes Recent figures have revealed that 10% of those aged 65 or over are divorced, with many of these older divorcees going on to remarry. As a result a number of divided families are coming to blows over who has the right to inherit their parent’s home, valuables and money.

children from their previous marriage. The children from the previous marriage often assume that they will still benefit from the surviving partner’s will and will not have to share their surviving parent’s assets with their new stepfamily members.

The figures from the Office for National Statistics show that in the 20 years preceding 2013 the average number of divorced males over the age of 60 increased by almost 75%. The same statistics also reveal that nearly one in three couples who were getting married were of a couple where either the bride or groom had been married before.

The rules of intestacy come into effect when someone dies without a will. Those rules set out who receives what from the estate, which is dependent on the relationship to the deceased. As a result children from either side can find themselves having to decide whether to go to court to claim what they believe is rightfully theirs. With the continued rise in house prices, resulting in more valuable estates, the number of disputes is growing, with a rapid increase in cases going to the High Court.

If you need advice on disputing a will contact Rothera Sharp’s Wills, Probate and Trusts team on 0800 088 6270. Individuals that remarry often fail to update their wills to include their new spouse and other relatives in their spouse’s family, and many do not realise that a will is revoked by marriage, which can result in intestacy leading to fractious disputes between family members in the future. The majority of disputes arise from couples divorcing who then go on to remarry someone else, but have

Staying Safe Online... Nottinghamshire Police has issued a reminder to gamers to ‘stay safe online’ following the release of the Pokémon Go smartphone app in the UK. The app, which is currently the top grossing app on both the Apple and Android download charts, encourages gamers to discover in-game characters in the ‘real world’ using the location services on their smartphones. Users travel to real world locations where Pokémon characters appear on-screen through their smartphones camera. Gamers can then attempt to ‘catch’ each character and battle other gamers in the real world to progress within the game. Detective Inspector Pete Quinn from Nottinghamshire Police said: “The risks that this app presents are not new or unique and, as with any other social media, there is always the potential to put yourself at risk by letting your guard down and coming into contact with people you don’t know – both online and in the real world.

the potential risks, as well as making sure they know what apps their children are using, who they are speaking to online and where they may be travelling to use these apps.” Nottinghamshire Police is also asking gamers to be considerate towards others after officers were required to respond to a report of torchlight being spotted in the south Nottinghamshire village of Normanton-on-Soar in the early hours of Tuesday 12 July 2016. Officers travelled on blue lights – their most urgent level of response – to investigate the report from worried residents where they discovered two teenage boys out searching for Pokémon. It was established that no offences had been committed. For more information and advice about helping you or your children to stay safe online, please visit the Nottinghamshire Police website at: www.nottinghamshire.police. uk/advice/prevention

“We are also appealing to parents to have an open and honest conversation with their children who may be using the app to remind them about Special Constabulary Recruitment - Are you interested in becoming a Special Constable? To find out more about our prerecruitment awareness events please contact us on 101 800 2429 or visit www.nottinghamshire.police.uk and follow the Specials links

Bring a touch of the tropical to your garden Canna Lilies – A garden essential! Canna Lilies are stand out performers in the garden. Available from garden centres and supermarkets they bring a touch of the tropical to your plot. These exotic beauties have lush bold flowers and their patterned leaves are architecturally stunning. Despite appearances however they are surprisingly easy to grow. Follow my tips to ensure you keep them flowering till the frosts and bursting back into bud next summer.

Get maximum blooms Cannas are happy in flower beds or pots but they always seem to perform at their best as the showy centre piece of a container display. Never deadhead them. The new flowering stem comes up through the old flower so keep your secateurs sheathed to ensure the longest flowering period. Despite their tropical appearance Cannas grow best in semi to full shade. Bright sun causes the vibrant colours in their leaves and

flowers to fade. This makes Cannas your ideal choice to brighten up a shady corner. They tolerate drought conditions. Growth is lusher and denser when grown in moist environments but they still perform brilliantly when things get a little dry. This combined with the fact they don’t need deadheading means they are the perfect flower if you are planning a few weeks away over the summer.

Winter care Lift the Canna rhizomes after the first frost. Pop them into pots and cover with compost. Keep the pots in a shed or garage over winter ensuring the soil stays slightly moist. Plants will start to send out shoots in Spring. As soon as these shoots are visible move the pots into a frost free greenhouse or porch. Once any fear of frost is passed the Cannas can go back into your garden.

Cannas are hot, exotic, tropical and easy to grow.

Nottingham Emmanuel School’s students raise £1000

Students from ‘Red House’ at the Nottingham Emmanuel School have raised a staggering £1000 for the children’s cancer ward at the Queens Medical Centre. Naomi Walters from Nottingham Hospitals Charity received the cheque and said, “I am delighted and impressed by the students, they have worked so hard to raise the money. As a charity we try to provide things over and above what would normally be available -whether that is to improve the environment for patients or provide arts resources or complimentary therapies.” Some students from the school visited the children’s cancer ward and reported that the visit had spurred them on. Morgan Armstrong (age 12) and her friend Sumayya Majid even had their long hair cut to raise money. Morgan said, “I didn’t mind having my hair cut; I just felt better about myself doing something to help others. When I visited the ward it was colourful and homely and it is good that we have raised the money to help them.” Sian Jones, Teacher of DT and Head of Red House said the students’ efforts were a credit to the school. “I am so proud of the students. When I took over the post of head of Red House at Christmas we had raised £460 which was a good amount, but we decided to forge ahead and try to raise as much as possible.” Sian said that the visit to see the children’s ward had been a moving experience for her. “It’s not always easy hearing about the challenges those children are going through but the environment was so warm and homely it didn’t feel like a hospital ward at all. Our students were very moved by it and more determined than ever to raise more money for the charity.”

TAROSCOPES Libra (5 of swords, 9 of swords, Queen of wands)

There’s a woman you know. She’s sharp and demanding. You play out scenarios with her in your head: stressful ones. This is going to change, potentially in an unexpected way. Remember: your relationship has been fractured for a reason. You may not see, or like, it now, but there is a lesson concealed in your troubled rapport. Let the tension subside, because the worst is over. Heads high… her influence is moving into the rear view mirror.

Scorpio (3 of swords, 5 of cups, 2 of cups)

Betrayal is a wound with layers of pain. Then it forms a scar, usually a deep one, to prevent more of the same… But you’re going to meet someone this winter who reminds you of the positive power of a twosome. It might be a romance; it might be the rekindling of a relationship that’s waned; it might be a new friend or ally. But this relationship will be truly, mutually beneficial. A lifelong connection. Treasure it.

Sagittarius (King of cups, King of coins, Queen of wands) Everything ebbs and flows, nothing stays the same; good news when you’re down but a source of anxiety when you’re up. This winter, you are on the ‘up’ in the two big areas of your life: emotions and resources. You’re mastering how you feel about something which was once painful, and you’re realising you can make money and protect your security even in tough conditions. You’re a survivor. Revel in your strengths; nothing can stop you this season. Capricorn (8 of coins, The High Priestess, The Hierophant)

Ever the ‘climber’, you never stop planning and forging onwards. The path has been hard, but you’ve mastered much; what once was awkward now comes naturally. And yet there are still challenges to face. Perhaps the biggest one yet: what do YOU really want? Is the path you’re on as resonant and fulfilling as it was? Soul search your inner, authentic self this winter. Is 2017 a pivot for changing course?

MUSICAL

If you are involved in a choir, singing group or band then we would love to hear from you. Every month, space permitting, we will include the latest news, concert information and forthcoming events. You just need to email us at: ali@ngmagazines.org.uk by the first Friday of the month.

WOODTHORPE SINGERS CORRECTION... In the last edition we announced the retirement of Marjorie Rogers. To clarify, Marjorie is not retiring and will continue with choir work and piano tuition. Marjorie has a few slots available at the moment. For more information please call 0115 931 3965.

Gem Connection have been out and

about during the summer months with their very popular Teddy Stalls raising funds which help towards the purchasing and legalising of their music and the specialist coaching they receive throughout the year. October rehearsals will be intense, polishing up the package they will be taking to Harrogate where they will be competing in the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (L.A.B.B.S.) National Competition at the end of October. The ladies are holding an Open Rehearsal Night on Thursday October 20th and would love to perform to an audience. The evening is free to friends, families and anyone who would just like to come along for a cup of tea and to listen, give encouragement and have a good night of entertainment. The evening will be open to visitors from 7.45pm, meeting at The Harrington Middle School, Derby Road, Long Eaton. The Gem’s would love to see you there.

Eastwood Collieries’ Male Voice Choir have had an extremely busy year, with some excellent concerts already under their belts, including a joint concert with Beaufort Male Choir, that was a sell-out three weeks before the event!. They are already planning their centenary celebrations (starting 2019) but their main focus right now is their early autumn performances.

On October 8th, they are delighted to join with one of the youngest choirs in the area, the Rock & Soul Singers, based in Underwood (at Underwood Church). What a night that promises to be – an Octoberfest of song! Later that month, they will be joining Ilkeston Brass at the United Reform Church, Ilkeston for what has become an annual event – Saturday 29 October at 7.30pm. November is a quiet month as they prepare for the Christmas period.

Visit the web site at www.ecmvc.org – and come along and give them a try – new members always welcome! And if you are a Facebook user, search for ‘ECMVC’ and take a look at the frequent news updates.

Land Your Dream Job Through Social Media Research has revealed that making smart use of social media could improve your chances of landing that dream job. Why don’t job hunters use social media more? It could be the case that people are scared of using social media to find new positions, network and sell their skills to potential employers, because they are worried about making the wrong impression. However, if personal and professional use of social networks are kept separate, and users always share and post with their professional image in mind, job hunters can enjoy very positive results from being a pro-active social media user. Tips for job hunting via social media It’s important to remember that many employers are actively looking for people who have skills that can help their businesses in the future, as well as now. If you can demonstrate successfully techniques for promoting yourself and your skills using social media, this shows businesses that you can promote them too. Here are some top tips for job hunting via social media: • Make LinkedIn your priority. There are certainly opportunities for self-promotion on other platforms, but this professional social network is a very good place to focus most of your attention. • Post interesting, valuable content. In order to impress, and to avoid being too repetitive or desperate-sounding in your self-promotion, demonstrate that you have your finger on the pulse of your industry by providing your target employers with interesting, valuable content that they actually want to read. • Engage with your potential employers. If there’s a company you really want to work with, start to engage with them on networks like Twitter beforehand – your interest could make all the difference if you manage to get an interview. • Clean up your personal profiles. It’s good to show yourself as a well-rounded candidate with both a personal and professional online presence, but if there’s anything you’d rather not be judged on, remove it before you start your job hunt. © Helen Jones

Nottingham Emmanuel School See Top A Level Grades

Despite the number of A* grades being awarded dipping nationally for the fifth year in a row, staff and students at The Nottingham Emmanuel School are celebrating their highest ever number of top A Level grades. Particularly good performances were seen in Maths, Science and Sociology and such results have led to excellent individual outcomes with students going on to study at the leading universities. Rouven Deines (A*, A, A, A) who will now study at Sheffield University says that attending a UCAS Fair helped him to decide on what course to aim for. “After talking about bioengineering at the UCAS Fair I looked into it a bit more and it seemed the perfect fit for me. All of my teachers, - but especially the Mathematics department as a whole have really supported me to get through the process.” Other students have also showed determination and resilience in their pursuit of specific career paths like Heather Keith who obtained A*, B, B and has been awarded with a place in higher education to study policing. Nottingham Emmanuel’s Head Boy and Girl, Ben King and Mehreen Khan have also successfully obtained places on teaching and law courses respectively as a result of their academic achievements. Kerry Wiltshire, Assistant Principal at Nottingham Emmanuel School said that she was thoroughly impressed by the determination of her students.

Heroes of Troy battle it out at Greythorn Primary School!

Children at Greythorn Primary School in West Bridgford have put on an all action performance of the ‘Heroes of Troy’ for friends and families. Teacher Annie Hud said she was delighted with the children’s efforts. “The performances all went really well and I could not have been more proud of them! All of the children worked really hard to learn their lines, improve their stage presence and put on a good show. It was lovely to see their confidence develop and I could see how much the children enjoyed performing. We received lovely comments from parents complimenting the production- so all of the hard work was worthwhile!” Pupil Sam Day (age 11) played King Priam and said he was quite confident until the big night, “As soon as it came to the performance and I saw my parents I felt the pressure because I didn’t want to let the cast or my parents down!” But for some children the experience has kindled a desire to go on to more. Gregory Fisher (age 11) said he will continue to hone his acting skills at home and Will Tongue (aged 11) enjoyed playing his part so much he wants to audition for a small part in a BBC show!

O

n Sunday 10th July we arrived at Go Ape in Sherwood Pines Forest Park for our tree climbing, swinging and Zip Trekking Adventure. I took the family along, grandad, dad and two teenagers – all of whom should feel at home swinging through the trees. Our day started with a safety briefing, being strapped into a climbing style harness and then practising using the safety equipment, clipping onto the safety lines and swapping from one obstacle to another. After this we were set free to traverse the course by ourselves. We climbed a ladder up into the tree tops and then decided which out of two paths to take. The tree top trails involve swinging into giant cargo nets, crawling through barrel type tunnels, edging along tightrope wires, stepping across wooden slats, and much, much more. My favourite and worst moment was swinging across into a cargo net after dropping a few feet first. This was great for someone like me, who was determined to fight my fear of heights and have a great day with the family.

The whole adventure start to finish lasted around 3 hours and even though the site itself was busy we hardly ever got held up. All in all a fantastic day out with lots of laughs and monkeying around. A Baboon (10-15 years) costs £25 and a Gorilla (16 years +) costs £33. Go Ape was dreamed up by Tris and Becs back in 2001 while on holiday in France with their six month old baby. They came across a French family swinging through the trees and when they saw how much fun they were having came up with the idea of Go Ape. Since then they have built 30 courses all across the UK and have also added Segway experiences, Tree Top Junior Adventures and at one site a zip wire adventure. Lucky for us the Sherwood Pines location has the Tree Top Adventure for 10 years and above, the Tree Top Junior for 6-10 years, and the Forest Segway. For more information or to book a visit go to their website: www.goape.co.uk
