DYING TO SAVE MONEY?

Many people fail to sweep their chimney or service appliances at regular intervals, either due to the fact that they are unaware of the maintenance requirements, the potential consequences, or for financial reasons. The use of an unregistered chimney sweep can be dangerous; it is only through established trade organisations such as the Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps that a customer can have confidence that the job they are paying for is done correctly, and that safety checks will have been made. Upon completion, a registered chimney sweep will issue an approved certificate.

CHIMNEY FIRES

UK fire statistics indicate that there are over 31,000 domestic chimney fires a year. These are largely due to infrequent sweeping which results in a build-up of flammable tar within the appliance or flue. Insurance companies may refuse claims due to chimney fires unless the chimney has been swept by a registered chimney sweep where a certificate has been issued. CLEAN CHIMNEYS DO NOT CATCH FIRE Greg Drozdowski: info@ homesweep.co.uk Tel 01623 401128 / 07711 441459 HETAS registered and a member of the Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps

Ichabod Charles Wright by Bob Massey On 20th October, 1871, the Nottingham Guardian announced the death of Mr Ichabod C. Wright at the home of his son in Sussex. Ichabod was born at the family home, Mapperley Hall, on the 11th April 1795 the eldest of 13 children. His grandfather, also called Ichabod, came from Suffolk and started a business in Nottingham as an iron monger but soon moved into banking, creating a family-run bank on Long Row, Nottingham in 1761.

admirers. The three books were published together in 1845.

Ichabod Charles was educated at Eton and Christ Church College, Oxford graduating with a BA in 1817 and an MA in 1820 then continuing as a Fellow at the college until 1825. On leaving the college, in the same year, he became joint manager of the family bank. He married Theodosia, daughter of Lord Chief Justice Denman, on the 21st December 1825.

These books are still available to buy from Amazon today!

Wright devoted most of his early business life to the bank and made a study of the theory of banking, writing several books on the subject.

In 1859 Wright published an English blank verse edition of The Iliad of Homer. As well as these scholarly works, he published Thoughts on the Currency in 1841, The Evils of Currency in 1847 and a study on Sir Robert Peel’s Bank Charter Act of 1844. Wright also wrote and published a volume of poems.

The Wright’s were great supporters of the church and were involved in many local activities. He was a director of the Midland Counties Railway in which he took great interest. In 1839 he wrote a 12 page booklet to the railway companies about Sunday travelling on the trains. As Sunday was the only day off for most people at that time, great crowds arrived at the stations to be transported to Nottingham and other towns making it necessary to add extra trains to deal with the traffic. Wright objected to this, arguing that Sunday should be a day of rest and he was prepared to accept financial loss and unpopularity rather than “violate the precept of the observance of the lords day” Wright was interested in the education of the poor and gave land at the junction of Hucknall Road for the building of the National School.

His interest in Italian literature during the 1830’s produced a translation of Divina Commedia by Dante, popularising this authors work. It was issued in three parts dedicated to Lord Brougham, Archbishop Howley and Lord Denman, all Dante

While at his sons home of Heathfield Hall in Burwash, he died suddenly, on the 14th October, 1871, aged 76. He was bought home to Nottingham and buried in Carrington Churchyard. As a memorial, a number of his poems were published after his death in 1873. After his death, Wright’s wife Theodosia threw herself into her work for the church and died, after some 20 years of widowhood, in May 1895.

I am researching the people and history Mapperley and would like to hear from anyone with memories or photographs of the area or the people involved : bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG magazines

The Lazy Gardener.... Hits the decks

Decking can really add another dimension to a garden. A few years ago we replaced our tired and depressing mixed level concrete patio with a lovely new deck. It was hard work but well worth it. Having it all on one level makes the garden seem so much bigger.

can covers 50 sq mtres of decking with two coats.

After a couple of harsh winters it now looks very dirty and scruffy and is in desperate need of some TLC. This is a good time of year to get on top of this job - so that it looks gorgeous for all those hot summer days and bbq parties (fingers crossed!)

Now would also be a good time to tart up any tired looking garden furniture. Luckily our small table and chairs are metal and glass so require little more than a good scrub with some soapy water.

One of the key things to bear in mind before you start is to check for a few days of dry weather. You need this to enable the products to dry properly. There are three main steps to deck maintenance; cleaning, restoring and protecting. Cleaning - There are loads of cleaning preparations specifically designed for decking. We use Swarfega Decking Cleaner, £9.98 for 5ltrs from B & Q. Most garden centres and DIY stores sell a good selection of branded and own label products.

So there you go - with a couple of days graft, the decking will look like new and you can sit back and enjoy a cold beer and admire your hard work.

Elsewhere in the garden - the runner beans are coming along nicely on the window sill and my mum has kindly donated various other vegetable seeds which will be going into the garden over the next couple of months. I received a lovely email from a reader recently. Gaynor runs a stall on Sherwood market called Sherwood Specialilty Herbs and Edible Plants. The market is held on the first Saturday of the month through til August from 10am til 2pm. Gaynor will be selling different plants every month. I can’t wait to get along and stock up.

First you need to get the deck clear of debris. We brush and then hoover the deck to get all the old leaves and dirt off. Then you can apply the cleaner following the manufacturers instructions. Restoring and Protecting - Once the decking is clean and dry we use Ronseal Decking Oil in Clear, £39.98 for 5 ltrs from B & Q. Decking oil is a special treatment/ preserver that penetrates the timber so as well as looking good it also protects the wood from the elements. We apply the oil using a large paint brush - which takes a while - after leaving to dry you need to apply a second coat. A 5ltr

If you are thinking of having decking and can’t face the thought of doing it yourself there are a number of businesses listed in the magazine who would be delighted to come and quote you. Many of these businesses will also restore old decking for you. © Ali Wale

“Move fast without sacrificing the equity in your home” is the message from local property buyer, Oliver.

Many companies offer to buy your house quick, but expect a large hit on your sale price. It doesn’t have to be this way! Oliver offers a local home buying service that is fair, ethical and avoids the time and cost associated with estate agents, HIPs and readying your property for sale. Oliver will first seek to understand what you are trying to achieve by selling and deliver a tailored solution that works for you. What amazes people the most is how fast and simple the whole process is. From contacting Oliver to handing over the keys in less than 14 days is typical. Penny’s B

outique

Ladies, welcome to Penny’s Boutique.... First of all let me introduce myself. My name is Penny and I am very excited to have been asked by the team at NG Magazines to write a regular fashion page. I have been buying, selling and dressing ladies in Fashion for quite a while now and I LOVE IT! I had the great pleasure of being the FashionAdvisor at John Lewis, Nottingham and last October opened my own shopBoutique 11 on Plains Road in Mapperley, selling “real clothes for real ladies”. I not only want to talk about the coming season’s colours, styles and prints but also about how to put that fashion together to suit YOUR particular age, shape and uniqueness. First of all, I’d like all you ladies out there to start truly believing that age and size are really nothing but numbers. It’s not the clothes that you wear but how you wear them and that’s all down to carefully picking things from current trends that suit your individual shape. Believe me ...every single one of us ladies has something about our bodies which we hate and complain about. The thing we need to do is enhance our favourite bits and disguise our bad bits! So here goes................ This coming summer it’s all about colour....lots and lots of colour, from acid greens and pinks to soft blues and yellows. Bright, bright coloured jeans and skinny trousers are everywhere and when teamed with a lovely simple white top or blouse, can really suit everyone. The trick is to

get the right shape and length of the top to wear with them. Team that with a fabulous brightly coloured loafer and you are good to go. Dresses are also very, very popular this summer. Lovely feminine “Julia Roberts” style dresses. Just pick the correct shape and length for your own body shape. Again in all sorts of pretty colours and patterns from tiny little daisy prints to huge bold asymmetrical designs. I love this very feminine look, especially its versatility. It can be made to look a little funky with leggings and a flat ballerina pump or any height wedge. It can be dressed up to be sophisticated with a simple patent court shoe..... Voila a dress that can take you absolutely anywhere. All I ask ladies is please don’t dismiss any fashion look until you have experimented a little. I have lost count of the number of times I’ve suggested ladies try on something a little different from what they would normally choose. To their surprise they’ve absolutely loved it and say “I feel like a new woman in this” or “I would have never thought I could wear this and I love it” Just remember, enjoy yourselves, try to make buying yourself a new outfit fun and if I can help in any way you know where to find me. Until next time....Happy Shopping Penny x Boutique 11, 0115 960 2006

The Notts Guided Walks Partnership is pleased to announce that sufficient funding this year has enabled the publication of their 2012 Guided Walks booklet and web-site www.nottsguidedwalks.co.uk. Thanks to our volunteer leaders and groups, this is the largest compilation of walks the Partnership has produced so far. Copies of the 52-page free booklet will be available at libraries, country parks, information and leisure centres containing 129 guided walks in Nottinghamshire right through to the end of the year. Most of the walks are free and led by experienced walkers from the Ramblers and other local walking or wild-life groups. The web-site will be on-line by the middle of April. A new feature this year is a “Walking Festival” for the week Sunday 3rd to 10th June. During this week, 17 walks have been specially planned to encourage even more individuals and families to take to the countryside during possibly the best month of the year. The Festival will be supported by Radio Nottingham - indeed, one of the walks will be led by John Holmes. Another will be led by Paddy Tipping, ex-MP and Notts Area Ramblers’ President. It’s your chance to enjoy some healthy activity at little cost - and make new friends too. Six of these walks can be reached by public transport. For those not yet ready for several miles of effort, there are many pages of Health Walks included in both booklet and web-site, led by experienced leaders who are trained for the job. If you’re trying to regain fitness after a period of illness, have a look at what’s there to help you in your area. It may introduce you to a new group of friends. Happy walking!

Looking for a school for your daughter? Thinking about school for the first time?

Or as she gets older?

You want the best for your daughter but which school is right for her? Maybe it is time for you to look at a school which helps girls develop their individual strengths and abilities, whilst ensuring they are safe, secure and happy.

Have you concerns about class sizes? Is your daughter getting overlooked? Do teachers really know what makes her tick? Are you pleased with the progress she is making?

Hollygirt School takes girls of all abilities. They all make excellent progress and we are proud of their achievements at whatever level. It is the unique environment of a girls’ school with small classes, where everyone knows each other and teachers have the time to get the best out of each child, that really works. All girls are stretched and achieve more than they thought possible.

It is never too late to make a difference to your daughter’s education. Wouldn’t it be lovely to find a place where she is happy and achieving the best that she possibly can? In today’s straitened economic times, there is great value to be had from having a daughter in Hollygirt even for a couple of years, and rapid progress can be made to ensure a girl reaches her potential.

Indeed, girls can join Hollygirt at any age from 3 up to the start of Year 10, subject to a place being available. There is a school that perfectly suits your child...…maybe Hollygirt could be the one. Our next Open Events are on Thursday 3rd May, please see below for timings. If you can’t make it, just call us to arrange a convenient time for you to come in for a chat and a look around. We look forward to seeing you.

Young people join together to transform their communities Hundreds of young people will hit the streets of Nottinghamshire this summer in a pioneering flagship scheme. National Citizen Service (NCS) is now recruiting hundreds of 15 and 16-year-olds in Nottinghamshire. Participants will have the opportunity to take part in a broad range of skill building activities including team bonding events and creating their own social action projects to help their local communities in July and August. NCS is a flagship government initiative which aims to promote a more cohesive, responsible and engaged society by bringing together young people from different backgrounds to make a difference in their communities. It is a voluntary summer programme that focuses on their personal and social development including challenging

activities, such as residential experiences and a self-designed social action project. Last year more than 8,000 young people were involved in the programme across England and this year there will be up to 30,000 places available nationwide. The scheme starts in earnest in July, when participants will take part in camping, canoeing, climbing, abseiling and archery, on a series of residential courses in the Peak District. Teams will also talk to their communities to find out about local issues and then shape and complete a project around the ones they are passionate about by the end of August. For a place on the programme or to find out more about it, get in touch with the team now at ralph.tonge@ncn.ac.uk.

Relays:

CARLTON FORUM SWIMMING CLUB Welcome to the latest edition of the Carlton Forum Swimming Club page. 2012 Notts County Age Group and Relays Championships:

February/March: Focus was on the County Championships where the best of Notts were together for an intensive few weeks of competition. This year the older children competed back in December but arrived for the Relays day. This left the 14/U boys and 13/U girls to fight it out for the individual honours. 9yr age group: In the girls section Charlotte Render qualified for her events very late but smashed all PB’s and achieved an excellent 10th place overall. Sprint twins Ella and Jessie Green performed well in some of the 50m events. Asher Huffen, Jak Winfield and Thomas Crawford competed in the boys section with Asher excelling in 2nd place overall following a series of big swims especially in the 200m events. Jak had a little bad luck but gained a very creditable 11th place, and Thomas, who made a last minute decision to enter achieved PBs in his 3 events. 10yr age group: In what is probably the toughest group (60 swimmers!) Nadia Bouchlaghem, Hannah Gayne and Abbie Quarton were very competitive gaining 16th, 17th and 21st place respectively. Luke Mitchell has showed fantastic progress since his debut last year and stormed to 2nd place in the boys section with very strong swims in the 200m backstroke and 200m Individual Medley where he achieved Midland Regional Qualifying Times.

Top 10 Swimmers

11yr age group: Meghan Henshaw and Megan Booth competed in the girls section and both achieved big PBs with Meghan gaining 23rd overall in another very strong group. In the boys section Ben Flanagan achieved a hat-trick of top-10 placings with 7th overall and Marcel Green continued to place well, as he has done every year, with 20th this time. 12yr age group: Will Gayne once again hit top spot becoming 12yr Champion. It was certainly no easy thing and went down to the last event following some extreme pressure from another top Nova swimmer and sprint specialist. Will’s distance work kept him in the picture and some late big sprint PBs did the job. Incredibly, this is the 4th year in a row that Will has been champion. Josh Mitchell has also showed excellent progress and made his Counties debut. 14 yr age group: Another debutant this year was Nathan Sutton who came from nowhere to qualify for 2 events. This followed his recent promotion to our main squad.

Thanks again to Kirk Contracts, Nottingham for help sponsoring our County Championships.

Travel to the event was hit by snow this year and a number of our teams could not compete but for those that made it: More success as the 10/U Boys Team of Ralph Wills, Luke Mitchell, Jak Winfield and Asher Huffen were crowned Freestyle Champions and came 5th in the Medley. The 12/U Boys Freestyle Team came 2nd , the 10/U Girls Freestyle team came 6th, and the 16/U Boys came 5th in both free and medley finals. Overall, the club had another outstanding year and it was so rewarding for all involved to see so many Personal Best Times (PBs) achieved. A huge well done to all competing swimmers and thanks for being such a great credit to the club.

Committees Corner and Squad News: Congratulations to Charlotte Render and Asher Huffen who have been selected to swim on the Nova Development Squad. This is a great achievement based on their recent County Champs placings. Also, a big well done to Luke Mitchell on his promotion to the Nova B2 Squad after qualifying for 3 events at the forthcoming Midland Regional Championships. The club held its annual Easter disco at the end of March and a fun night was had by all – it was great to see so many attending. We are seeking sponsorship for our Club Championships in June. Companies can sponsor an hour of the Championships for £55 in return for advertising within the programme and around the club. If you could provide this valuable support please make contact. If you or your child are interested in joining please contact Greg Wiley (07531 776368). More information can be found at http://www.cfsc.co.uk or email gregw_1@hotmail.com.

It is a message we have to deliver rather more often than we would like, but we will continue to make it clear so long as it remains an issue. We’re talking home and vehicle security, and it has been something of an issue in Mapperley recently. Unfortunately, too many of us are making it easy for opportunist thieves to sneak in through unlocked doors and windows and to steal our prized possessions. I know many people will read this and think it does not apply to them. We all like to think we take good care of the things we have bought with our hard-earned money. It so easy, however, in the course of our busy lives, to overlook some rudimentary steps which can protect those items. Please remember to lock doors and windows at night, and when you leave the house. You should also keep doors locked and windows secure even if you are in the house during the day. If you can afford it, a burglar alarm is always a good investment, as are timer switches for lights and lamps. This message is not intended to scare anyone. Crime is yet again reducing. In fact, there have been 6,000 fewer victims of crime across Nottinghamshire over the past 12 months than there were during the previous year. We can all help to drive that number down still further by eliminating the opportunities that burglars are looking to exploit. When it comes to our cars, too many of us are content to leave items on the seats. Sat-navs are almost seen as integral to the vehicle, rather than easily detachable optional extras. Remove any items of value from a car, and that includes items you might think would not interest anyone. Even clothing and small change can be enough to entice the most prolific thief. And remember to lock the car. We still come across incidents of theft from cars which were not locked by their owners. The cost of not taking these simple precautions is not just in the loss of an item, but in the time and expense of replacing that item, making insurance claims and then having to pay out higher premiums. For comprehensive crime prevention advice, please visit the Nottinghamshire Police website www.nottinghamshire. police.uk and go to the Crime Reduction section.

Rothera Dowson launches online divorce and dissolution service

ber

of

As technology improves and it becomes easier to access the internet, many people are changing the way they access legal services, taking advantage of reduced costs and the element of convenience. In line with this, Rothera Dowson has launched their online divorce and dissolution service which can be accessed through the firm’s website at www.rotheradowson.co.uk. The service supports those applying for a divorce or dissolution of a civil partnership, by assisting with the application to the court and completion of the court documentation. Clients can choose the amount they wish to spend and the level of support they wish to receive. This can range from simply completing the forms themselves online and dealing with the Court directly, to instructing us to deal with the completion of the forms

and the submission of the necessary documentation to the Court at each stage. The service may not be appropriate for all people; for example if arrangements for children are not agreed or the former partner is not likely to cooperate. In those circumstances it may still be possible to deal with the matters online or in the traditional way but additional work may be required. Additionally, where appropriate, advice can be obtained concerning financial and children matters. As Legal Aid will be withdrawn from the majority of family cases from April 2013, this divorce and dissolution service will allow those who may not be eligible for Legal Aid from that date, to obtain access to justice at a reasonable price and in a straightforward and convenient way. Should you require any further advice or information about the service, please do not hesitate to contact Mr Paul Cobb, head of the family law team at Rothera Dowson, on 0115 9165200 or at p.cobb@rotheradowson.co.uk.

Gedling Colliery Many regular walkers over the former Gedling Colliery site will have noticed some major changes in its appearance recently. During the middle week of March, the last track remnants of the old Derby Friargate Line between Netherfield and the colliery were spectacularly ripped up by a team from QTS Rail.

Cut first into 20 ft lengths by oxy-acetylene torches, the single track that has lain undisturbed since the line was built in 1878 was pulled piece-meal out of the ground by a powerful JCB with a panel grab, then piled on to a rail-based loading shovel. Each load was

then taken to the colliery end of the line and stacked for delivery as valuable scrap metal and timber. Luckily Brian Cluff of the Notts Footpaths Preservation Society was on hand to record the whole process from the track-side. You can see a short video of this on Youtube at http://youtu.be/Uo3klaM_Aog under ‘Travel and Events’ titled ‘Gedling Rail Track Removal’. It is featured in the DVD he has just made about the colliery site, its tunnel, the extensive wild-life on the ground and in the air, Alkane’s innovative methane gas conversion project and what’s happening to the Council’s development plan for the Country Park. Those many readers of NG3 who joined Brian and the Notts Footpaths last October for an informative walk through the site may like to contact him for a copy of the DVD that also includes the walk. He can be reached on (0115) 9205110 or by e-mail at briancluff@talktalk.net
