Reader Questionnaire: RESULTS A MASSIVE THANKS to all of you who took the trouble to fill in your questionnaires. We really do appreciate it. Congratulations to Mr Stevenson who wins a £50 Tesco voucher and to Ms Frankland and Mrs Owens who both win £25 vouchers of their choice. We were overwhelmed by the positive and constructive answers to the questions. Here’s what we found out............
98.6% of you read and keep the magazine
Great news for advertisers and contributors (and us!!!)
The main reasons given for keeping the magazines were to find local businesses, local services and to find out what's going on in the area. You also love your puzzles, competitions and offers so we will try to include as many of these as we possibly can. History was also popular and we would like to thank all our wonderful contributors. Wow - this is great news for us and all the businesses in the mags...from oven cleaners to river cruises, gardeners to fitness classes you love them all!! ...Really good , great rates, well satisfied, super... were all comments you used to describe the service you received.
“ “ “ “ “ “ ““ “ “ “ Think you are doing a great job. The mag has improved each year.
of you said the magazine meets your needs. And more than half of you have used more than one business from the magazine!!!

favourite sections lots of you simply said "All of it". For those that did specify, adverts came top, followed by local news and events. Most of the sections got a mention which is great!
Some we have already taken on board; money off vouchers, more competitions, interviews with local traders Some we are working on right now; bringing back top tips page, restaurant offers Others are all noted and will be considered at a later date. Thanks to all of you who have agreed to help us on an ongoing basis with our spot checking. There's the chance to win a tenner every other month for answering a very quick phone call. If you missed the questionnaire but would like to be on our call list there is still time.

St Andrews Institute Golf Club by Bob Massey
Like all churches in the late 1800’s, St Andrews in Mapperley had an institute attached. This building was both a church hall and an education centre. At this time most people could not read or write and had very little opportunity to learn. There was no free education available for the vast majority of the population so the institute provided classes in reading, writing and educational and spiritual events as well as books, games and entertainment of a moral and uplifting type. The institute at St Andrews was unusual, for as well as the normal activities it started a golf club on land that it acquired in Mapperley. Why or how this came about is uncertain. It was first mentioned in the St Andrews parish magazine in November 1903 when it was already an established club. The course, a hilly and tricky 9 hole links, had been designed for the club by Tom Williamson (pictured), a Notts Golf Club pro. The club was lucky to have the services of Tom Williamson. He had created a double world record by being a professional for 54 years from 1896 and playing in every Open championship for 50 years. Tom was the Nottingham Golf Club’s head greenkeeper for 50 years and a golf course architect to some 60 other courses including St Andrews.
Chilwell. St Andrews won 6 ½ to Chilwells ½. The same month another match was reported between the club and Erewash Valley Club. This time the club lost 8-1. By 1909 the club was really well established, joining the Notts. Union of Golf Clubs for a £1 subscription. In 1924 the club was separated from the church and taken over by the YMCA to become the Morley House YMCA Golf Club. Times change and by 1931 the members were asking to play on Sundays in order to compete with other clubs. Under YMCA rules this was not allowed so in 1932 a separate club was formed called the Mapperley Golf Club. At this time much of Mapperley was still a very rural area and very little of the land had been built on so the course had to be surrounded with strong fencing on all sides to prevent cattle wandering on to the links! This is reflected in the present club logo which is the head of a bull (pictured below). In 1983 the club was extended and a new 18 hole course designed by John Mason, was built. This is the course that is still there today.
It was November 1906 before information next came to hand about St Andrews. There was a report in the Nottingham Daily Express of a match between the golf club and Chilwell Manor played at
I am researching the history of the area and would be pleased to hear from any one with details of the people and places now long gone. Email bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG3

30 vehicles, consisting of 27 staff cars, 2 cars belonging to the general public and 1 mountain bike, left the council in sparkling condition. The money will go towards helping a huge number of children around the UK and beyond. Cllr Michael Payne, Deputy Leader of the council, who took part in the carwash said: “It is fantastic that we as a council were able to do our bit to support such an important cause. Councillors and Senior Leadership Team members have a number of duties to perform for Gedling residents on a daily basis which are not always fun or easy. So it is great that we were able to set a little time to take part in this event, which was not only enjoyable, but will also provide a lot of help and services to children who truly need it.”

Rothera Dowson Launch Market Leading Employment Insurance Cover for Employers In this economic climate, many employers, particularly smaller businesses, do not have the luxury of being able to pay lawyers working on an hourly rate to help them with HR problems or Tribunal cases. A drawn out dispute with an employee, or an Employment Tribunal claim, can wreck the balance sheet and all the financial forecasts for the year. The consequences of losing a Tribunal Claim can be even more catastrophic, wiping out profit margins and putting the existence of the organisation under threat. Rothera Dowson have identified the demand from SME’s for access to specialist advice but at an affordable cost, backed up by insurance to cover the costs of defending a legal claim. Rothera Dowson have teamed up with Straight Solutions and can offer Employment Law Protection Insurance. The package we can offer is simple and comprehensive – in return for one annual payment, you will receive the following cover:• • •
Throughout the year you can contact our specialist employment lawyer with any H.R. or employment law problems or queries In the event of any employee or former employee issuing an Employment Tribunal Claim, we will handle all aspects of the case on your behalf Any Judgment or Award that the Tribunal may order, or Settlement sum, will be covered by the policy
What makes our Insurance Backed product different from others on the market is that there are no hidden charges. For example, there are no extra costs for attending any Hearing. But the biggest difference is that even if the Employment Tribunal concludes that the exemployee is entitled to some compensation, or if it is commercially sensible to make a modest Settlement to end a claim, provided you have followed our advice throughout, you will not have to pay anything. Before signing up to any other contract, or renewing with any existing provider, contact us so that we can provide a quote for a policy which will give complete piece of mind. For more details please contact Paul Brill on 0800 096 0998.

Firstly, Nottinghamshire Police would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy New Year. No doubt you will have received some lovely gifts and gadgets from your friends and family this Christmas. They might include a new handbag, car radio, top of the range laptop and even some brand new clothes. We want you to keep hold of these presents and not for them to be snatched by a burglar or thief who has seen them left unattended in your car or home.
You can play your part by ensuring cars and homes are secure and that there is no temptation in sight for thieves. Please also consider registering phones, laptops, electrical items and other gadgets, particularly new items received at Christmas, on property database Immobilise. By doing this it will help officers reunite recovered items with their rightful owner. For more information visit www. immobilise.com. This year we also want to ensure that you are kept up to date with what is happening in your area.
You can help to ensure that 2013 is a happy new year by taking steps to protect your home, vehicles and belongings.
One way to find out what’s happening is by signing up to Nottinghamshire Police’s Neighbourhood Alert system.
Most burglars are opportunists who are always more likely to target a house that looks vulnerable in some way.
This is an automated service that sends out free updates about local crime trends and incidents by email and text.
A darkened property in a row of otherwise illuminated homes will attract attention, but an inexpensive timer switch could pay dividends by deterring a thief.
It is a great way to be kept in the loop and we encourage everyone to sign up by visiting w w w. n e i g h b o u r h o o d a l e r t . co.uk.

A Lifeline for Animals in Need
Animal Accident Rescue Unit is a transport service for sick, injured or vulnerable animals and birds. It provides both transport to a vet surgery, arranging for their treatment and caring for them in foster homes until either their owner can be traced or new homes can be found. The Charity has no central base and is run entirely by volunteers working from their own homes. It has taken in so many cats over the last few months, it desperately needs new fosterers who can provide a temporary home for one of our rescued cats. If you think you can help, please ring the Recruitment Officer on 0115-956 3799 (recruitment calls only).

Local Nottingham-based charity Animal Accident Rescue Unit is seeking volunteer drivers with their own car who have a couple of hours a week to spare during the daytime, evening or weekend. The charity needs help to transport rescued animals to and from vet practices and foster homes. Additionally, reliable people are needed to take calls from the public who require help with animals they find in distress. All roles are based from home. To learn more on how you can make a difference to vulnerable animals, please ring the Recruitment Officer on 0115-956 3799 (recruitment calls only). Many other volunteering roles are also available. MOVE IT, LOSE IT, AND LOVE IT!
with your local Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitnesses Classes in Arnold and Sherwood Do you want to loose weight and shape up for your special day?
Why not read about Suzette’s story: Suzette joined one of the Arnold Rosemary Conley classes in January 2012 in order to loose weight for her wedding. She had tried other diet’s previously without success and loving exercise decided the Rosemary Conley classes would be an ideal way to loose weight and tone up as they combine weight loss with exercise. All classes offer a combination of dietary advice and exercise, which has been central to the life changing successes that many members have seen. Suzette set herself the target to loose weight before her big day, having already bought her dress, she new how much she wanted to loose. Suzette was very successful in her weight loss shedding 21lb, but she was staggered by the huge amount of inch loss particularly on her waist – 14 inches!! Her dress virtually had to be remade in order to fit her on the big day. Suzette dropped from a size 18 to a size 10, she says “I was getting married in August and I felt very overweight and had no confidence at all. Jo and the other members in class were so supportive. My wedding day was amazing and I felt like a princess – thanks to Jo!”

Cafe 118 is now open A brand new cafe has opened on Burton Road Café 118 recently opened on Burton Road and is run by husband and wife team Wendy and Alistair McBain. Wendy told us about the business, “Café 118 is keen to welcome all sections of the community. We provide a unique place for customers to socialise in a comfortable and relaxing environment whilst enjoying the best brewed coffee and fabulous food.” Café 118 also provides an extensive take away food and drink menu. “We pride ourselves on providing a great ambience, convenient location, exceptional customer service and locally sourced products of consistently high quality” said Alistair. Inside a range of daily papers, magazines and books are provided along with free WI-FI. Wendy continued, “Café 118 prides itself on the personal and courteous way it serves its customers.”
The Cafe is effectively divided into 2 parts - at the front is a sandwich bar and this is also where hot take away food and a wide range of coffees are dispensed. The ‘shop’ space is surprisingly large as behind this ‘deli like’ front area is a homely sit in cafe with leather seats and a comfortable sofa area. Alistair added, “We only use the finest freshly ground coffee and fresh ingredients in our food and we hope local people will support us as we’re Carlton residents ourselves. We also have a food delivery service including quality coffee, jacket potatoes, panini, hot and cold rolls, sandwiches, baguettes, drinks and much more!
We are open for eat in, take out and delivery of quality food and drink seven days a week. Freshly ground coffee made just how you like it! Americano, cappuccino, espresso, latte, teas, hot chocolate Serving delicious cakes, pastries and cream teas Why not treat yourself? Now serving a wide selection of fresh sandwiches and filled rolls, cooked to order paninis, all day breakfast, pasta and jacket potatoes Call in today and check out our special of the day!

On a cold dark night nothing warms you up like a steaming bowl of soup with some crusty bread. All these recipes are easy to make and taste delicious.
Cauliflower Cheese Soup
Curried Lentil Soup
1tbsp veg oil 1 or 2 tbsp curry powder 1 onion chopped 3 carrots peeled & diced finely 250g lentils 1.2 ltrs veg stock salt & pepper tabasco sauce (optional) Greek yogurt to serve
n
k
S OU P it che Method
This soup is mild, thick and very creamy. 30g butter 1x onion chopped 1x cauliflower cut into florets 250ml milk 600ml veg stock 150g mature cheddar grated salt & pepper 1 tsp paprika
Method
Melt butter in a large saucepan. Cook onions gently until soft. Add the cauliflower and stir. Add stock. Bring to boil and simmer until florets are just tender. This will only take a few minutes. Take off heat and allow to cool for 10 mins. Add grated cheese and milk and stir. Liquidise until smooth. Place back in pan and heat gently. Season to taste. You shouldn't need much salt due to the cheese. Once in bowls sprinkle with paprika. Also delicious with crispy bacon scattered over.
Heat oil in a large saucepan. Add onion and fry gently for 10 mins, add garlic and fry for another 5 mins til onions are soft. Add curry powder, stir and cook for 1 min. Add carrots and mix well. Cook for 1 min. Add lentils and stock and stir well. Bring to the boil and simmer until lentil and carrot are soft (about 20 mins). Liquidise and place back in pan. Taste and season accordingly. I find no salt needed if I use stock cubes. If you want the soup to have an extra kick add a few drops of Tabasco. To serve add a swirl of Greek yogurt to each bowl.
French Onion Soup
30g butter 2 tbsp olive oil 700g onions thinly sliced 1 ltre beef stock 250ml white wine 2 cloves garlic crushed salt & pepper to taste French stick 200/250g gruyere cheese grated Method
Heat oil and butter in large saucepan and fry onion and garlic gently until browned and soft (about 30 mins). Be careful not to burn the onions. Add the stock and wine and bring to the boil then simmer for 20 mins. Season to taste. Thickly slice the baguette and lightly toast both sides. Sprinkle cheese on top of the slices and grill until the cheese is bubbling. Put soup in bowls and float the baguette slices on top to serve.
eat, drink & be merry!

Emergency card offers peace of mind to Gedling carers
Can You Help? The Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance is YOUR local Air Ambulance Service and needs your help in many different ways to help keep it operational. Our helicopter and crew are on call every single day of the year during daylight hours. We average 4 missions a day attending everything from road traffic accidents, industrial and sporting accidents, serious illnesses and people who are injured in inaccessible places. Each year it costs the LNAA £1.7million to provide this vital, life-saving service and we receive no Government or Lottery funding. We rely on individuals, companies and community groups to help us reach this target. Some of the ways people can help their Air Ambulance Service are: • Donating money • Fundraising on our behalf • Joining our Lottery • Remembering us in their will • Donating their time as a Volunteer Volunteers are needed in our shops in Mapperley, Retford, Stapleford, Sutton in Ashfield and Mansfield Woodhouse to help serve customers, sort stock and window-dress. At events volunteers are needed to help set up our stand, sell LNAA merchandise and run tombolas and other fundraising initiatives. We need volunteer drivers to drive our vans to events and to deliver stock to our shops and we need volunteers at our warehouse to sort stock and donations and people are needed all over the county to attend cheque presentations on our behalf. Volunteering is very rewarding and you will be helping to save lives, will meet lots of people and there are roles to meet most abilities and talents. To find out more have a chat with the Nottinghamshire Volunteer Coordinator Lynn Jones on 0115 941 2255 or email L.Jones@ ambucopter.org.uk.

People caring for a relative or friend who lives in Gedling are being urged to sign up to a carer’s card which offers 24-hour support in the event of an emergency. The free card helps to ensure care can be provided on the carer’s behalf on an emergency basis. Currently, 334 carers have signed up to the Carer’s Emergency Card scheme which is now solely managed by Nottinghamshire County Council. The Council wants more people to sign up to the scheme to help protect those who receive care in the county. An estimated 80,000 residents in Nottinghamshire are carers for loved ones and family members. The card gives an emergency telephone number that anyone can call. Staff answering the call will take the appropriate action that has been agreed by the carer, including contacting family members or friends or arranging emergency help if needed. To apply for the card contact the Council on 0300 500 80 80 or email enquiries@nottscc. gov.uk

Awards Mark 640 Years – And More!
The hard work and dedication of 60 members of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire was marked with a celebratory tea party at Ramsdale Golf Club in Calverton. Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s annual awards were presented by County Commissioner Kate Royse and included long-service awards to 18 members who have devoted a combined total of over 640 years to Guiding. In addition to the awards marking 30, 40 and 50 years of service – the latter to Thorneywood’s Jean Ramsden (pictured above left) - the afternoon saw presentations of Oak Leaf awards to nine Guiders and the Nottinghamshire Star to six non-uniformed volunteers, together with six County Brooches and 11 special ‘Thanks’ badges. Entertainment for the award winners and their guests was provided by girls from 2nd Calverton Brownies.
POSITIVE OUTCOMES For many of us alcohol can be an enjoyable part of everyday life. For others it can cause difficulties. If you are trying to cut down on the amount of alcohol you drink, or to stop drinking altogether and you’re finding it harder than you had imagined, a support group might be the answer. Positive Outcomes is one of only a handful of independent alcohol support groups in Nottinghamshire run wholly by and for people who aim to control their drinking – cutting down or cutting it out. We are not health professionals, just ordinary people who have stopped drinking or who want to control their drinking. We meet each week in Nottingham city centre to listen, discuss and help each other in a safe, confidential and nonjudgemental environment. We are a drop-in group - there is no charge and you can come to as many or as few meetings as you like. We hope that we can help you but if you find we are not right for you, there is no pressure to come back. So if you think we can help and you would like to find out more, contact us for information on these numbers: Oxford Corner: 0115 948 5505 Mon, Tues & Fri, 9.30am-5pm Wed:9.30am-8pm,Thursday1pm-5pm Self Help Nottingham: 0115 911 1661 Mon to Fri 9am – 1pm E-mail: info@selfhelp.org.uk

The proposal, by Nottinghamshire-based education experts The Torch Academy Gateway Trust, is intended to provide additional capacity and broaden parental choice in an area of Nottinghamshire where perceived demand for places currently outstrips supply.
“The Nottingham Free School will be a specialist Science and Creative Arts school. We are feeding on Nottingham’s considerable reputation for creativity, as evidenced in plans for the creation of a Creative Quarter, formalised by the current government under new 'City Deals' initiative.” “We invite parents/carers of pupils in Years 4 and 5 to attend a series of public meetings in Arnold, Sherwood and Carrington so that we can share our exciting plans.”
John Tomasevic John Tomasevic, Chief Executive of The Torch Academy Gateway Trust, explains: “Our proposal is designed to complement the existing secondary education infrastructure

chorus roundup 5th Singing Course...the best one yet!
Members of the Major Oak Chorus found out what it would be like to sing in a much larger chorus recently when 40 guys joined their latest singing course. Over 6 weeks they learnt three songs, Take Me Home, Country Roads, a Carl Denver classic; Something, George Harrison’s most famous song; and The Lion Sleeps Tonight , always a popular song with audiences.. These featured centrally in the end of course show performed to a capacity audience and received a tremendous reception. What a night! Many of the new guys commented how brilliant the course had been and how well it had been organised. The great news is that 22 of those new guys joined the Chorus the following week for normal rehearsals. Wow! Should you wish to find out more about Nottingham’s only male barbershop chorus then why not visit our website www.majoroakchorus.com or contact the chorus by sending an email to secretary@majoroakchorus. com. We look forward to hearing from you.

Nova at the Chesterfield Canal After enjoying a walk beside the Canal near Chesterfield in September, members of Nova Singles Club decided to explore the more picturesque stretch from Shireoaks to Kiveton. Featuring several bridges and twenty-three locks, some double or triple, this section from Worksop to Kiveton forms part of the award-winning restoration project carried out between 1996 and 2003. Walkers from Shireoaks pass twenty-two of these locks on a delightful gradually-inclined towpath that during the summer months gives us many glimpses of bird life and passing narrowboats on their way down to the Trent near Gainsborough. In mid-October, Nova members led by past chairman and founder-member Brian Cluff, joined the canal near the restored Cinderhill Bridge where the towpath crosses the canal towards the tiny village and marina at Turnerwood. Tea and coffee here at Lily Cottage's snug little conservatory on the outward and return journey were among
the highlights of a sunny day that lit up the autumn colours of the trees along the route.
Nova meets at 8pm every Thursday evening at the Mapperley Plains Social Club, opposite the Treetops - Eating Inn. The club's monthly programme of social events for single, widowed, separated and divorced people includes dining out, concerts, theatre and cinema visits, walking, of course, and many more. Visit the web-site at www. novanottingham.co.uk or phone Chairman Paul Mitton on (0115) 9404147.

Arnold Art Society: French Connection Rekindled Members of Arnold Art Society and friends are pictured assembled for a photo shoot in
Photograph by Mike Pointon Stanislas Square, Nancy during their recent exchange visit to Vandoeuvre -les-Nancy in eastern France. The group endured the 15 hour coach journey via the Channel tunnel to be greeted warmly and enthusiastically by a ‘reception committee’ on arrival and then hosted by fellow artists and their families during a week long stay. A joint art exhibition was arranged and a letter of greetings and goodwill from the Mayor of Gedling was handed over to the Mayor of Vandoeuvre by
Arnold Art Society chairman John Williams. A packed programme of activities organised by the French town included visits to other towns, including Strasbourg and Metz, art galleries, museums, castles, and factories producing ceramics and glassware. The generous hospitality and geniality of the hosts was beyond belief whilst the social gatherings enabled everyone to have a go communicating their respective languages with the wine tastings smoothing the flow of the ‘franglais’. The visit proved to be a huge success with the cementing of new friendships and a strong desire by all for a future revisit to Gedling to be arranged.
Autumn Exhibition and Craft Fair
The autumn exhibition was held during the week - end of Sat/Sun 20-21st October at the Pondhills Community Centre. More than 500 members of the public visited the exhibition during the two days with the Deputy Mayor Councillor Bob Collis and his wife visiting the exhibition on the Sunday.
Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest – the next chapter: Plans for new £13m visitor attraction announced
A £13m investment plan to create a world class Robin Hood experience and protect historic Sherwood Forest will provide a major boost for the local economy, says Nottinghamshire County Council. Around 100 people could be employed through plans for a new Sherwood Forest Visitor attraction which will also generate huge visitor spend for the local economy and vital investment for the Forest itself. The first phase of the project which includes a brand new visitor centre, café and shop to replace the existing facilities will open in summer 2014 and the new Discover Robin Hood attraction will welcome its first visitors in spring 2015. The Discover Robin Hood proposal promises: • A world-class visitor attraction to promote the legend, life and times of Robin Hood and his

band of merry men • Interactive, futuristic tourist features amid the settings of a medieval castle complete with fortified ramparts made from local materials • Free access to a courtyard offering a taster of medieval activities and a gateway to Sherwood Forest which retains its free public access • Comprehensive plans to promote the natural habitats and natural history of Sherwood Forest – led by the existing county council ranger team. Celia Brooks, Chairman of Edwinstowe Parish Council said: “We welcome investment plans at Sherwood which promote the area, but at the same time protect the forest and are sympathetic to the local environment, as well as anything which can benefit the village of Edwinstowe.”
