HAPPY 2014
TO ALL OUR READERS!!! Another year over...where does the time go?? We hope you all had a fantastic festive season and are looking forward to 2014. We are constantly being told to eat less and move more, especially at this time of year so we decided to ask some young people to share their favourite sports with us all and give us some inspiration. See page 60. These cold, dark nights really do call for comfort food and there is none better than a steaming bowl of (healthy) stew. We have included three easy recipes to cheer you up. Happy Reading Ali, Cat, Sarah & Francine

Allen Sollys Volunteers by Bob Massey Christmas has been and gone and 2013 is now a memory. 2014, a new year with new hopes and aspirations.
was to be four years of hell and not the adventure they thought it to be, “all over by Christmas.”
Not so a hundred years ago. These were troubled times for the British Empire. When the troubles of the year boiled over in 1914 and a state of war was declared the population rallied round to support the cause. People were very patriotic and willing to help defend Britain.
What happened to this group? So far we have only identified a few of the faces. Some of them, of course, died and have their names inscribed on Arnold’s war memorial in the park and on a plaque of those from Allen and Sollys who died in the war. What happened to the others? The ones that survived and came home to “a land fit for heroes”.
When Kitchener, the Secretary for War, called for volunteers, the response was tremendous. The British army was the best in the world and Britain controlled a quarter of the world so this war would be over soon - possibly by Christmas - most people said...
Did they carry on with their interrupted lives or did they take a different course? Did they settle down into their old routine or did they fail to adjust to the new peace? What happened to the three women? Who were they and how and where did they serve their country? The Arnold Local History Group is planning an exhibition in October 2014 covering the Auxiliary Hospital on Arnot Hill Park and the stories of those who served in the Great War and survived to return to life in Arnold.
Everyone wanted to do their bit. Both men and women. When the call went out for volunteers in Arnold people queued to join up. There was competition among work places with work mates joining together aiming to provide the biggest contingent. The factories in Arnold were no exception with Allen and Sollys leading the way. The photo shows the first group to volunteer in 1914. It was not all men. Three women stand out in the photo among a wide cross section of men. What these volunteers did not realise at the time was that the war
We would love to hear from anyone who has stories to tell. To this end we are holding a Heritage Day at Arnold library meeting room from 11am-2pm on 25th January. There will be films, artefacts and pictures of the period. Please come along and share your photos, pictures and memories. There will be equipment to copy and print pictures and documents. Look out for the posters and flyers and visit www. arnold-history-group.org for more details. Don’t hide your stories and memories. We want to know about the Arnold heroes. The ordinary men and women who served their country.
I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG5 magazine.

Heat oven to 180째C. Heat oil in ovenproof casserole. Cook chicken until golden then remove. Cook lardons for 2 mins, add leeks, garlic & thyme and cook until leeks soften (about 5 mins). Add wine and boil for 2 mins. Add flour, stir well. Add stock gradually, stirring all the time. Add chicken & bring back to boil. Put lid on and place in oven for 45 mins then take lid off and cook for another 20 mins. Delicious with mash.
Place a heavy based pan on a medium heat. Add chorizo and fry for about 5 mins. It will release plenty of oil. Remove chorizo and add onion, garlic, chilli, red pepper, sweet potatoes and sausages to the pan. Fry for about 10 mins until onion softens and sausage browns. Add paprika and cumin, cook for 1 min, stirring. Add wine and boil for 2 mins. Add tomatoes and stock. Simmer for 40 mins. Season to taste. Serve with rice, couscous, mash or crusty bread - anything to soak up the juices!
Lamb Stew
600g lamb - cubed 1 tbsp sunflower oil 5 med potatoes - peeled & sliced thickly 5 med carrots - peeled & sliced thickly 2 onions - quartered & sliced thickly 2 tbsp pearl barley 1 ltr lamb or beef stock salt & pepper
Method
Heat oven to 180째C. Heat oil in ovenproof casserole. Brown lamb & remove. Add half lamb back to stew pot. Top with half the vegeatables & one tbsp pearl barley. Season well. Add rest of lamb, vegetables & pearl barley and seasoning. Pour in stock, cover and place in oven for about 2 hrs. Check every so often and add more stock if necessary. You could also add dumplings for the last 20 mins if you like.

DVLA and the insurance industry propose changes to policy on previous convictions Currently, if you contact an insurance company to purchase motor insurance, they will ask you to declare any relevant previous motoring convictions. Although most of us are honest in our declarations, it is perhaps unsurprising many people do not declare what they should. As a consequence, the premiums of those of us who are honest may be higher than they should be but the DVLA has joined up with the insurance industry to take decisive action on this. It is hoped that the project entitled Insurance Industry Access to Driver Database (IIADD) will reduce fraud by giving insurance companies access to DVLA records, meaning that whether you declare them or not, insurance companies will be able to check whether you have any previous motoring convictions which are not spent and take these into consideration when giving you an initial quote or in relation to a renewal premium. For each named driver, the insurer will ask for the: driving licence number (if the driver has a GB licence), full name, date of birth and gender, in order to check their records. It could be said that there are several advantages to this project, principally that it will become very difficult for people to get policies using false information, which will in turn positively affect risk pricing for the rest of us. Also, as many people over-declare on convictions because they are not sure what they need to announce, this project could rectify that problem. However, there are potential negatives to IIADD as well. Even though insurers should only check for previous convictions which are not spent and are relevant to the risk, the reality is that they will be in a position to ask you about any convictions over the past 5 years – spent or not – and so even the unspent ones could affect your premium. Of course this point has even wider implications than that of motor insurance. If introduced, the new rules will apply to all types of insurance and so if you have a previous motoring conviction, this could affect your ability to get home contents insurance for example, even though it is arguable that this is not relevant. Of course you can decline to give consent for the insurer to access the data which the DVLA holds on you but if you do, they may choose not to insure you at all. The DVLA have insisted that they will put a system in place which prevents insurance companies from taking into account convictions which are not relevant but how this will work remains to be seen. There has been no announcement yet on what date the project will come into effect but it could be as soon as Spring 2014. For further information and advice contact Anton Balkitis or Lucy Whitaker at Rothera Dowson solicitors on 0800 096 0998.

Great rates of pay!!! NEW YEAR….NEW START As we head into 2014 it is encouraging to see that the latest economic forecasts are positive following the doom and gloom of recent years. For those readers who are considering making career changes over the coming months the statistics are encouraging. A recent survey by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation found that over the next year 52% of employers are planning to increase the number of their permanent workforce. Even more encouraging is the fact that KPMG record “the sharpest increase in permanent wages for six years”. As a recruitment business specialising in permanent, temporary and contract staff we can validate these statements as we have seen on a local level far more activity from potential employers over the past six months. Similarly the talent pool of available candidates has become far more fluid as confidence increases and employees look to new opportunities and progression. If you are considering a career move then the traditional methods of job hunting are undoubtedly
still valid but you cannot underestimate these days the power of social media and networking. Using platforms such as Twitter and LinkedIn you can very quickly build your own profile and allow potential employers to see not only your employment history but also an insight into your personality. In most cases employers look not only for skills and experience but also the correct “fit” with their company’s culture. But always be media savvy. Remember that updates shared on Saturday night after some hard partying will probably not appeal to potential employers on a Monday morning! Are you sure you need to leave your current employer? Many of our clients will be reluctant to interview candidates who have job hopped. Maybe negotiating a pay increase whilst building on your current skills and experience would be a better option? We will cover negotiating a pay increase in the next issue of the magazine. © Helen Jones, Solos Consultants

From your Neighbouorhood Beat Team..... As Christmas has come and gone for another year and we look forward to 2014, we know that many of you out there will have vowed to stick to your New Year’s resolutions - some of these more realistic than others. But why not forget those promises you know you won’t keep, and make safety and security your priority this year? It’s a new year so let’s make a new start on protecting your stuff. Don’t let burglars get the better of you. Keep those new gadgets and gifts you received from Santa out of sight, and make sure your house is always secure, even if you’re home and you are doing everything you can to keep thieves away from your car. We imagine that for most of you, your shiny new smartphone will be at the top of the list of your prized possessions. Make recording your IMEI number and registering the handset at www.immobilise.com the first thing you do. If it is lost or stolen you will then have a better chance of getting it back. Activate a keypad locking mechanism and download a tracking app. Don’t flash your phone about when you are in public. Keep it in a fastened bag or pocket, and don’t leave it on the table when you are out at a cafe or pub. And dare we move on to the next major date on our calendars? Valentine’s Day. That’s right, the day for love is fast approaching and being that our interactions are moving online these days we would like to take the time to remind you of the dos and don’ts. Use trusted sites if you’re planning to start an online dating profile. Talk to friends and family as they may be able to recommend a particular site.
Find your Safer Neighbourhoods team by entering your postcode on the homepage of www. nottinghamshire.police.uk
Whether you are looking for love online or otherwise, remember the following safety tips: • BE MYSTERIOUS. Do not reveal too much personal information about yourself, whether in person or online. Do not tell your new date where you live and under no circumstances reveal financial information. Be wary of requests for money. • BE PATIENT. If you meet someone new on a night out, why not wait to take it further? Don’t go home with them or invite them back to yours. If you do decide to do this, make sure you tell your friends who you are with and where you are going. Never ditch a friend for a new squeeze, leaving them alone. • BE SENSIBLE. Make sure the venues for your first and early dates are in public places, like restaurants or bars. Make your own way there and your own way home again. Always tell a family member or friend about your plans. • BE PERCEPTIVE. If your gut is telling you no, listen to it. Be conscious of anyone who comes on too strong, too quickly. Watch out for those who seem to have troubled lives and beware of people who make inappropriate comments or appear to be aggressive or pushy. • BE DRINK AWARE. While you may choose a tipple to calm your nerves, too much alcohol can impair your judgement. Don’t drink excessively when meeting new people. It takes time to build that trust with someone, plus you will, no doubt, want to remember the date. Finally, we want to thank you for your help tackling crime in the area over the past year. Keep reporting suspicious activity and crime to 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 and as a community we can really help to keep our area a safe place to live.

Ella’s Teen Talk: New Year’s Resolutions a good thing?....
New year is always an exciting time where you can look back on the past year with pride, memories Ella Higginbotham aged 15 and, in my case, relief that I can move on from last year’s me and hopefully grow into someone with a better hairstyle or more grown up persona. However, setting a new year’s resolution? What is the point? You never hear people three months down the line giving an update of their resolution; in fact it’s a surprise if they can even remember what it was in the first place. I believe it is just something we feel like we should take part in; there is really no gain from it except trying to seem more committed than friends and family who are equally determined to stick to their resolutions! So be careful, there is always that one competitive member of the family that will gloat about how they’ve lost 5 pounds with their new lifestyle or giving up alcohol for the month (I mean, does anyone really care?!) However, if your dad or mum own a gym then I bet you love the new year, you think new year’s resolutions are a gift from the gods because your parents will be raking the money in! If over 50% of members actually get their money’s worth from going to the gym then it will be a miracle. So some new year’s resolutions really just cause unneeded financial problems, why do adults spend money on silly promises when they could buy their lovely teenage ‘children’ new things?! That would be much more beneficial for everyone! If we, as teenagers, are the ones making the resolutions then we are always much more realistic than our parents. Most of us will simply aim to go to more parties and socialise and have a fun year; this is a much better idea than trying to be sensible by dieting or setting life goals as it is a lot more achievable! But whether you’re an adult or a teenager, if you Next have your heart set on a resolution and you are ready to be fully committed issue: then I say this; why wait for a new year to set yourself a target to do something? If you want to do something Getting the then just do it, no excuses. If you are that determined then surely you would most from like a head start…

Local animal lovers are being asked to help look after 15 puppies, all of different breeds, found abandoned by a member of the public next to a Nottingham canal. Initially taken to a vet practice, the pups are in the care of local charity, Animal Accident Rescue Unit. Entirely run by volunteers, and equally totally funded by donations, this small charity is stretched and appealing for help for the pups.
who win show tickets & a family ice skating pass Thanks to our sponsors:
The puppies appear to be from four different litters including Collie and German Shepherd breeds. How they ended up being literally dumped by the canal still remains a mystery. The vet practice and charity agree the youngsters are lucky to have been found – and thankfully all are in good condition.

free time Olympic athlete visits Porchester Junior School Kris Moodley age 10 years and a student at Porchester Junior School said it was great to meet Mr Davenport as he has a personal interest in swimming. “I swim six nights a week and two mornings and I swim for Nova Centurion in the B2 squad. I do all kinds of swimming but breaststroke is my favourite. It was really inspiring to meet Ross Davenport today. I know that to be an Olympian like him it will take a lot of effort.” Mr Davenport said that he feels that exercise is really important at a time when physical education is being cut back in some schools. Olympic swimmer, Ross Davenport spent the afternoon training with Porchester Junior School students as part of the ‘Sports for Schools’ program. Mr Davenport who is a double gold medallist held an assembly at the school and also held a mammoth PE lesson involving all of the school students.
Vicki Moore, PE Coordinator at Porchester Junior School said, “Ross Davenport's visit was a true inspiration, he has encouraged the children to think about their hopes and dreams for the future and motivated them to put 100% effort into achieving their goals. We cannot thank Ross enough for his inspiring words and encouragement; he made the afternoon a lot of fun!”

MUSICAL roundup
If you are involved in a choir, singing group or band then we would love to hear from you. Every month, space permitting, we will include the latest news, concert information and forthcoming events. You just need to email us at: info@ng5.org.uk by the first Friday of the month.
Grand Central Chorus Already preparing for Harrogate in May! Now that Christmas is over, the Grand Central Chorus is focused on the big UK Barbershop event of 2014 – the UK National Championships being held this year in Harrogate on Saturday 24th May and involving 48 choruses from across the UK. Over the next few months Grand Central will spend many hours fine tuning every aspect of their two contest songs so that when they take the stage in Harrogate they are fully prepared to deliver the highest possible standard of performance, and so hopefully achieve yet further success, having won the Gold medal when they last competed in 2012. The chorus welcome potential new members to come along to any of their weekly rehearsals on Wednesday evenings at 7.15pm at Harrington School, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4BJ. See their website www.grandcentralchorus. com for full details or follow them on Twitter @GrandCentralMen If you would like Grand Central Chorus to sing at your event, contact Peter on 01530243822 or e-mail publicity.gcc@gmail.com. They can provide a quartet, small chorus or full chorus of up to fifty singers as required. Fees are negotiable and quality is guaranteed.

Are you interested in singing? Do you want to free your voice and enjoy good company?
Alan Johnson singers are looking for new members-men and women- to join them. Alan Johnson teaches all choir members to bring out their individual voice using the ‘Bel Canto’ technique. All choir members have lessons with Alan and learn at an individual pace. Getting into singing as an adult is lovely. Singing is a stress buster, gets us breathing properly, helps to release endorphins-the body’s ‘happy chemicals’, helps the energy flow and gets those feelings out. Many people feel singing gives them a therapeutic experience. The more your singing technique improves, the more control you gain and confidence grows as result. Individual lessons with Alan helps to get you started and you’ll find that you will be able to develop your voice-it is like a sport, the more you put in the more you get out! We meet every Tuesday @ The Lakeside Arnold from 19.30-21.30. You are most welcome to make an informal visit. For further information about The Alan Johnson Singers and lessons, please contact Alan and Debbie Johnson Tel 0115 9200417 or Email ajsingers@btinternet.com
