n indulgent Mexican Cantina has opened its second restaurant, this time on Broad Street, Nottingham bringing with it an abundance of Mexican attitude. Mexico meets the Midlands with the launch of El Capo. Committed to serving bold Mexican cuisine with devilish South American flair. El Capo is spread across two floors; we were seated in the cantina on the ground floor, the decor is very atmospheric and this theme continues upstairs in the tequila bar, which is home to a vast range of tequila, mezcal and cocktail options. It is an amazing building and El Capo has really made the most of it. The restaurant promises ‘down right dirty but oh so good’ burritos, a long list of punchy tacos, authentic Mexican padron peppers, prawns, burgers that make you go ooh – and of course there’s nachos laden with guacamole. Not forgetting the Macho Mucho Menu – where bigger really is better – a 2ft long burrito made for 6 but they’ve seen lone wolves take it solo and the Big Boy Chilli Burger which comes with its own planning permission! We opted to share a few starters. Jalapeno poppers, chips and dips, and our absolute favourite, pan fried chorizo. For our mains we had pulled beef burrito, burrito bowl (without the tortilla) with spicy chicken, chicken quesadillas and slow roasted pork enchiladas. Alongside, we obviously had to have sides of cheesy chilli fries and El Capo’s slaw, suffice to say a doggy bag was required. You can select the sauce to suit your palette. The peach jalapeno salsa was just the right side of hot and really complemented the dishes.

Desserts were a MUST! It was churros and more churros!! (All in the name of research, of course.) Some came with chocolate sauce and some in an indulgent sundae that included a delicious coconut ice cream. Take it from us, they were spot on. El Capo has different offers and deals on all through the week; Sunday Service Big Sharing Boards provide the ultimate hangover cure; Steak Out Monday gives you premium steak for two with sides and wine (perfect for steak loving romantics); Taco Tuesday, all tacos are £1 all night long and Wing-It Wednesday where wings are 50p all night, perfect with a beer or two. Happy hour is every day from 4pm-7pm and all night every Thursday. Overall, El Capo is a great option for those that like tasty Mexican food served in a friendly cantina style setting with a massive choice of drinks!!

WIN £50 MEAL Just answer the following question: What day of the week are Taco’s £1 all night?

Welcome to the new year! Well, the festive season is over and it’s time to take stock. Most of us start the new year with good intentions, possibly a couple of resolutions and almost certainly an expanded waistline after the excesses of Christmas feasting! New Year’s resolutions have been part of many cultures (particularly but not exclusively in the western hemisphere) and religions. The Babylonians made promises to their gods at the start of each year, promising to pay their debts and return borrowed objects; the Romans began each year with promises to the god Janus (after whom January is named), in the medieval era, Knights would take the “peacock vow” (placing their hands on a roasted peacock) to re-affirm their commitment to chivalry - I quite fancy seeing that one make a return!

Like many people, I tend to crave fresh salads and light foods after the festive period, but it’s too early for home-grown lettuce, tomatoes and radish, and with the cold, snowy, wet and windy weather we’re probably more likely to reach for comfort foods, warming casseroles, deep-filled pies, piles of pasta and hearty soups. But if you’re ready for some lighter dishes, that taste good and provide much needed nutrients to replace those depleted by festive excess, I’ve picked out a few very simple recipes to see you through to the spring, even if your New Year resolutions don’t last quite that long…

the Forest: m o r f e ic o al wor ld r u t Tawai: a V a n e h t tion with lost connec

Building on his work on the BBC show, Tribe, veteran documetary maker, Bruce Parry, invites us on a fascinating journey with his feature-length directorial debut, Tawai: a Voice from the Forest. In the film, Parry spends time trekking through a jungle in Penam, connects with a tribe in Borneo, and learns the beliefs of a group of Indian gurus. And finally, for a more modern, scientific view on how our minds interpret the world around us, Parry visits psychiatrist Iain Mcgilchrist. If there is one phrase to describe this deep and insightful 100 minute journey, it would be ‘thought-provoking’. While the amateur feel of the camera work is a strength of the film, the shaking camera angles are also one of Tawia’s weaknesses. Overall, Tawai: a Voice from the Forest, is a haunting, inspirational piece of cinema that will have you questioning the very fabric of our society and whether the choices that we make on a daily basis are for the good of the planet, or simply rooted in our now all-too selfish desires.

A Q & A with the director, Bruce Parry

Parry sat down with us after the film to answer some questions. What more did you learn from this visit to the tribe that you didn’t from your last? “When working on Tribe, I thought when being told of their ways, ‘yeah but I know better, with what we’ve been taught as children’, but this time I really listened a lot deeper and discovered a lot more. Their way of experiencing things is subtly different to us. They’re more collective as a people, they feel as if they are a part of something, whereas we’re a lot more individualistic. They’re more in touch with their senses, their experiences are more visceral, and their sense of community can’t be chopped up like the aspects of our lives are. They feel that who they are is embedded in a place, their place, the forest, so they have a different motivation for life, a different meaning to it than us.” Are their religious beliefs waning? Is the spiritualism of their culture not being passed down anymore? “That was a painful scene in the film, when I was asking the older man about the people’s beliefs. I feel as if there is a sense of something else there, I don’t know why, but I knew I had reached my limit when asking the questions, and when he was asked to stop talking about this to me, I could see there is some kind of wound there. This is a complex time for them, they’re turning their backs on what it was and turning to what the future holds. Mind sets are always changing, not that we should go back to these ways though, that’s not what the film is trying to say, but it’s saying that we

should reflect on the complications of change. New advantages always come with loss. For instance in the film with the community gaining a place to stay, as the walls go up, the strong sense of community can be lost. Advantages come with cost, and we need to get rid of the notion that development always brings prosperity.” Is the egalitarianism of the tribe hard to maintain? “They just exuded it. But with an African tribe I visited with the London anthropologist Jerome Lewis, their route to this way of living is much more evident. One man in the tribe kept showing off he was the best hunter, then the men started to not go hunting with him, and the tribe kind of said ‘get back in your box.’ All of this footage from Africa is coming soon and I am very excited about it. But in this movie, I said that I couldn’t quite put my finger on the feeling I got while around them. I get why they share, logically, one person can’t do everything, so they share duties, but I felt something so different, invisible but powerful. The competitive aspect of our lives just isn’t present in theirs. It’s a part of myself, but here there was nothing to grapple with, they chose not to bring that, and it enables a very different experience.” Tawai: a voice from the forest =8/10 © Sam Burton (aged 20)

Caught by the Feet by Bob Massey

On 27th March 1833, the house of Mr Shelton of Mapperley was robbed. Sarah Hill, who was a servant in the Shelton household, entered the kitchen the next morning to start preparing the breakfast. Here, she found the kitchen door open, even though she had shut it before retiring the previous night. On entering the pantry, Sarah found that a pane of glass had been carefully removed from the window and the spring catch released from the outside by someone passing a hand around the frame through the missing pane. Just inside the window, the larder meat safe was open. Before fridges, a meat safe was used to store meat and other perishable food. The safe was placed in the coldest part of the pantry on a marble slab with a fine mesh door to let air in and keep flies out. The servant found that the meat safe was now missing bread, cheese, a custard and a pork pie. The kitchen was also short of a teapot, silk umbrella, silver cane, a hat, a great coat, a pair of gaiters and various other small items.

and pockmarked with brown eyes and brown hair with his eyebrows meeting in the centre and his nose crooked, as if broken. Robert was arrested and charged with the crime of “feloniously entering the premises of Mr Shelton”. When the case came to trial on 8th April 1833 it was shown that the shoe marks matched those owned by Riley. The dog had also been very friendly towards Riley and did not bark when he was around. Witnesses were called and evidence taken from the two Sarah’s. On the night of the robbery, the Nottingham watchman James Greaves, saw Riley carrying a bundle and an extra hat on Long Row in Nottingham, at the bottom of Greyhound Street (where the public toilets are today). As it was 2.30am Greaves asked him “what he was on with”. Riley told Greaves that he was locked out and had come from Mansfield. The watchman offered him a seat in his hut and Riley shared a pork pie with him! Greaves then locked Riley’s bundle up for safe-keeping in the Shambles (under the Exchange building where the Council House now stands). They sat and talked till 5pm and then Greaves went with Riley to the Shoulder of Mutton pub and left him there. It would appear that Riley later reclaimed his bundle and visited the Malt Cross the next day where he left it, along with a hat and umbrella, in the care of the landlord, Joseph Mart, by whom he was well known.

There was a dog in the house but, although in the kitchen at the time, it did not bark. This was very unusual as it always barked at strangers, even when they approached the kitchen door. Another servant, Sarah Newton, discovered footprints in the soil outside the kitchen window and brought them to the attention of Mr Shelton. Suspicion then fell on Robert Riley from Mansfield Woodhouse, an ex-Groom, who had left the Sheltons some three months before. He was described as 5’ 9” tall, freckled

After Riley’s arrest, the bundle was reclaimed and found to contain all the missing items except the pork pie. The jury soon found him guilty and he was sentenced to be transported to Australia for seven years. Robert Riley survived the crossing on the prison ship, Fairlee, and was released from prison on 20th May, 1840. He settled in Australia, marrying Johannah Keohane on 8 Sep 1841 in Nangus, New South Wales, just a year after his release. He remained in Australia for the rest of his life and died, aged 63, on 10 Aug 1872 in Gundagai, NSW.

I am researching the history of Mapperley and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail. com or post via NG5 magazine.

TAROSCOPES Air signs- Libra, Aquarius, Gemini (Eight of Coins, Temperance, Justice)

A learning experience proves to be life changing. This month, a powerful life lesson awaits you; one which could change everything, including your perspective and priorities. Lean into it, and trust that your new knowledge deserves to be used for your own best interests. Look for opportunities to discover new ideas and opinions, book onto a course, attend a lecture.

Fire signs- Leo, Aries, Sagittarius

Earth signs- Capricorn, Virgo, Taurus

(The Hierophant, Ten of Cups, Six of Wands) Embracing family traditions make you feel all warm and fuzzy at home with your loved ones. What are the rituals, memories and traditions that make your family come together? Set to and organise some bonding experiences this month with your loved ones. It will create a sense of security and belonging that will warm even the coldest of days. Home is where the heart is.

Water signs- Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio

(Ace of Wands, Eight of Wands, The Star)

(Six of Swords, King of Coins, Ten of Swords)

Make a wish. Done it? Good, because this is a ‘wish come true’ month..

You draw a final, bold line under something that needs to go.

A fantastic new opportunity sweeps into your life at lightning speed; be ready to jump! Good news, surprises, offers and proposals come in from near and far, and you’re on the move and loving it. Aim high in every aspect of your life right now, because the Universe is lining up to grant you wishes. Embrace every opportunity. Life is good.

This month, you’re ready and willing to leave something / one / where. You’re out the door, and breathing a huge sigh of relief. There might be a short, sharp pain as you walk away, but it will ease swiftly and you’ll be surprised how quickly you marshal your resources to make new stuff happen. The Universe is waiting for you to clear space so it can bring you fresh, new opportunities. Get to it.

Kerry Ward is a Nottingham based tarot reader, and Cosmopolitan magazine’s tarot expert, with over 20 years fortune telling experience, and many happy clients all over the world. Gedling Council Responds to Residents’ Wishes to Save Bowling Green

In October, Gedling’s Cabinet voted against the proposed sale of the former bowling green on Haywood Road. In response to the government cuts in Gedling’s funding amounting to some 62%, officers had proposed the sale of the former bowling green to generate much needed money and new homes. The proposal had, however, generated significant local interest and, in particular, residents made the case for opening up the bowling green for use by the whole community. Leader of the Council, Cllr John Clarke, said “This has been a really tough decision as we try to balance genuine concerns of residents with the urgent need for new homes and money from sales of our assets. As a Council we consistently said that we’d listen and take account of residents’ views before reaching a decision and this is what we’ve done. The bowling green will not be sold but kept in the Council’s ownership and transformed into open space that the whole community can use and enjoy.”

When travelling - be prepared Be prepared by having an emergency kit in your vehicle, which should include ice-scraper, de-icer, warm clothes and blankets, torch, boots, first aid kit, jump leads, a spade, a road atlas and sunglasses (for the winter glare). Check the forecast for the day. The morning trip to work might be clear skies and frost, but the changeable British weather means those clouds can roll in and the next thing you know you’re driving home in snow. Be ready for all eventualities. Plan your journey • Check weather and travel conditions before and during your journey and make sure you leave extra time to clear your windscreen properly before setting off. • Try to stick to main roads that have been gritted, wherever

possible. You can find details of gritting routes in our county on the Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottingham City Council web sites. Protect your home in winter As the nights get darker earlier leave a light on inside your home. (Remember to choose low energy lamps.) Use a timer switch: These operate the lights as it starts to get dark. Change the times that the lights come on to simulate an occupied home. Make sure your front door is well lit: Use dusk to dawn lighting that automatically comes on as it gets dark. Keep your house secure: Make sure you keep your doors and windows locked at all times. Going on holiday • Suspend any deliveries, such as milk and newspapers • Ask a friend or neighbour to keep an eye on your property • Try to make your home look occupied while you are not there by using timer switches on lamps or your radio Be a good neighbour If you see anyone acting suspiciously in your neighbourhood, call the police on 101 or, in an emergency, 999. Just the winter blues? E

ven though the festive season is over and all the fairy lights have been packed away for another year, it can feel like we’re stuck in the darkness of winter for some time yet. Even the most robust of us can start to pine for the lighter evenings and milder weather of spring. It’s not unusual for those of us in Northern climes to feel a bit down at this time of year due to the dark nights and short days. But for some people it goes beyond just feeling a bit glum and longing for a bit of sunlight because they suffer from a condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) – a form of recurring depression that strikes as the days get shorter and the dark nights take hold. Whilst the causes of SAD are unknown, it is thought that a lack of exposure to sunlight interferes with the production of melatonin and serotonin, both hormones playing a role in mood regulation. Symptoms of SAD resemble other forms of depression. You may find yourself suffering from a persistent low mood or losing any interest or pleasure in your normal everyday activities. You might experience sleep difficulties, in particular an inability to drag yourself out of bed in the morning, and that lethargy and lack of energy could follow you around all day. These are all symptoms of SAD but they are just as likely to point to non-seasonal depression too. People often mistakenly equate depression with suicidal feelings or desires to selfharm, which can lead some sufferers to believe that their persistent low mood and lack of enjoyment in life can’t be depression because they have no desire to end their life. Suicidal feelings should always

be taken seriously and if you, or someone close to you, is experiencing those kinds of feelings then they need to see a doctor. But please don’t dismiss an ongoing low mood or feelings of despair and worthlessness as something that you should just “get over” – these also indicate a depressive mood and should also be taken seriously. Whether your winter blues are caused by SAD or by non-seasonal depression, there are things you can do to feel better. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, there are a number of lifestyle measures you can take. Regular exercise can be particularly beneficial in reducing depressive feelings as can productive activity, such as indulging in a hobby. For SAD sufferers, light therapy can help in terms of replacing the sunlight in winter months. Sometimes the feelings run deeper and are harder to shift and that is when talking therapies such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) or counselling may be helpful. Antidepressant medication may also be required to help get your brain chemicals running at the correct levels again. There is no shame in seeking help for depressive thoughts – depression is an illness just like the flu. So, if you are feeling struck down by the winter blues at the moment, it might be a good idea to take a few minutes to think about whether this is just a minor mood blip or whether these feelings have been hanging around a little too long. Help is always available if you need it.

Tanya About Town W

elcome to my new page in ng magazines where I will be giving you my pick of the upcoming events in Nottingham. In the world of food and drink, the latter part of the 2017 saw Oktoberfest return to the Forest Recreation Ground. For five days, a giant blue and white tent, big enough to hold 2,000 people, played host to authentic German beer, food and music, all carefully selected to guarantee an authentic experience. The beer was specially brewed in a 200-year-old brewery in Bavaria and transported to Nottingham in a colossal beer tanker holding 23 thousand litres - this probably went some way toward contributing to the party atmosphere! If you can’t wait until next October, pay a visit to the Bierkeller on Friar Lane and enjoy the German experience all year round. Whilst we're on the subject of food, as we look ahead to 2018, foodies from across the region can look forward to a mouth-watering 12 months. Renowned Nottingham restaurant Hart’s launch a year of celebrations, with some very special events planned, to mark a milestone 20th birthday. The festive season may be over, but the cities' major pantos continue into January. There's still time to catch Beauty and the Beast at the Theatre Royal or Cinderella at the Playhouse. 30 January - 3 February sees the heart warming musical Son of a Preacher Man visit the Theatre Royal, whilst 14 March - 7 April welcomes the acclaimed play, War Horse. The tour coincides with the Centenary commemorations of the First World War. Stepping further back in time, the Vikings are in Nottingham until 4th March at Lakeside Arts. The Rediscover the Legend is a collaboration between the British Museum and York Museums Trust and will feature Viking and Anglo Saxon artefacts, including recent finds.

Celebrate Nottingham's own history with the Robin Hood Pageant on 10-11 March. Join Robin Hood and co. in this immersive experience in the grounds of Nottingham Castle. Someone else to put Nottingham on the map is our own Jake Bugg. The award winning Clifton musician comes home on 2 March to play the Royal Concert Hall. Lovers of live music can also look forward to one of Britain's best live bands, Stereophonics, as they play the Motorpoint Arena on 26 February. Erasure bring 32 years of golden songwriting to the Royal Concert Hall on 12 February. Strictly fever hits the city on 6-7 February as the live tour waltzes into the Motorpoint Arena, Vincent and Flavia tango into the Theatre Royal 23 - 27 January and Anton and Erin take us from Broadway to Hollywood there on 1 February. Finally, comedy brightens the winter evenings as Jason Manford brings his Muddle Class show to the Theatre Royal on 16 February and Bill Bailey shares the general shenanigans of twenty years as a comedian with his Larks in Transit show at the Royal Concert Hall on 28 February -1 March.

Nottingham Author Publishes New Book What would happen if the police no longer existed? What if order was maintained by brutal, unaccountable private security and freedom of speech was gone? What would Nottingham look like? What would be the fate of its people? ‘Active’ is the exciting new novel written by former Nottingham policeman Jonathan Nicholas, writing under the pen name Dan Hastings. It asks some very difficult questions. With the police gone, the biggest and nastiest bullies in the playground would take over, and a dark uncertain future would be the result. Influenced by writers such as George Orwell, Philip K Dick, and Ray Bradbury, with echoes of Margaret Atwood’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, ‘Active’ suggests Nottingham would be plunged into barbarism and cruelty, where beheadings and sex slaves become the norm. One reviewer stated: ‘This is darkly satirical of current Middle Eastern politics and political correctness, as well as the historical purges of Nazi Germany and Communist Russia. The setting is exactly that of DH Lawrence, his social divisions replaced by more sinister alternatives. It is a thought-provoking and uneasy read, taking events happening right now and superimposing them onto ‘middle England’, but no less compelling for it.’ ‘Active’ is available from Amazon.

Retro Cinema with a difference Win

Ever wanted to show your kids what ‘things were like back in my day’? This retro cinema offers a nostalgic trip for those of us lucky enough to remember the good old days of velvet seats and curtained screens. I can hear you humming the Pearl and Dean tune now! The Savoy, on Derby Road, is the only surviving pre-Second Word War cinema left in Nottingham out of 52! This iconic building was built by the architect Reginald Cooper in the art –deco style with a curved front and opened its doors for the first time on 7th Nov 1935 by Lenton Picture House Ltd, a consortium of local business men. It started its early days with just one screen and has definitely withstood the test of time now being home to 4 screens. The cinema is very well managed and constantly being updated, screen 4 has just been refurbished. Being cared for like this the cinema will be around for many years to come and at only £19 for a family ticket* it is well worth a visit.

As well as offering the latest movies the Savoy streams live events such as The Royal Shakespeare Company productions and National Theatre Live. Savoy are great for children’s birthday parties too, offering a private screening of a blockbuster film of your choice for as little as £150 for up to 30 children and 8 adults, 2 free cinema tickets for the birthday girl or boy and use of the party room immediately after the film. On top of all this the Savoy is a fully licensed wedding venue! That’s right you can hire the venue for your big day. To find out more info, what’s on and book tickets visit:

What To Do In A Veterinary Emergency Firstly - Don’t Panic! If you have any concerns about your pet’s health, you should always call your vet for advice. All vets provide emergency cover 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. This cover is either provided by a dedicated emergency hospital or by the practice themselves. Listen carefully to the message on the practice phone and/or tell the duty vet or nurse your concerns. Make sure you have the vets phone number stored on your phone or kept in an easy to find place. Make sure you know the location and address of the clinic.

If they are bleeding try to apply pressure or a bandage to the wound. If you think they may have been poisoned or have eaten something please bring any information that may help the vet with you such as pill boxes. If they have passed diarrhoea or urine - try to collect a sample for the vet. Some conditions like bloat, breathlessness or collapse can be life threatening and prompt action may save the life of your loved one. If you are not sure what to do then speak to the vet and they will advise you as to what is best thing to do.

Secondly - Get your pet to the clinic promptly. It is usually quickest and safest to transport your pet to the surgery to be treated - that is where we have our staff, equipment and medicines ready to be used. If your pet is in pain or shock they may try to bite or scratch! Treat them gently and possibly use a towel to wrap them up in.

LIVE SMART, AGE WELL! G

etting older doesn’t necessarily mean resigning yourself to the slippery slope of illness, weight gain and infirmity. Many conditions previously believed to be an inevitable consequence of old age are now known to be largely controllable depending on the lifestyle choices we make. Of course genes do play a part, but far less than previously thought, and genes can be switched on and off depending on the choices we make - they are not our destiny. Some links are well documented, like smoking with lung cancer and sunburn with skin cancer, but we now know that a large proportion of cancers are linked with environmental factors (such as colorectal cancer and processed meat). Cancer Research Campaign estimate that over 40% of cancers could be prevented through better lifestyle choices. Many other chronic illnesses could be avoided too. Dementia, the leading cause of death in the UK, is now believed to be 30% avoidable by exercising and eating well. The fact is that we have a lot more control over our health than we ever thought possible. This is exciting! We don’t need to allow illness and disease to take over our lives as a consequence of ageing. As with most things in life, the results depend on how much effort we are prepared to put in. Feeling the highs of post-exercise endorphins and increased energy from choosing good food will

make us feel great. The effort needed as we age is generally well rewarded. It’s never too late to make positive changes, especially when past damage can sometimes be repaired. It really is possible to wind the clock back. Certain diseases such as type 2 diabetes can sometimes be reversed with radical improvements to diet. More surprisingly, some studies are suggesting that some aspects of dementia and cognitive decline can be reversed through diet and exercise. When considering a healthy lifestyle, it’s important to take a long-term perspective and make choices and form habits that can be sustained. We can improve our food choices, eat mindfully and resist overeating. Taking regular exercise (even walking) is essential for both physical and mental health and is particularly linked with good brain function in later life. Avoid smoking for optimal health. Also, stress must be managed and good relationships nurtured. Small changes can reap significant improvements in how we feel. It’s a no brainer...by looking after ourselves we are less likely to suffer from a catalogue of ailments and conditions. We all want to feel, and look, as good as possible and be around for our loved ones as long as we can. Make the decision that you are worth the long-term investment and the benefits are life-changing!

NEW YEAR... NEW YOU A new year is fast approaching. Are you one of the many in January who pledge to becoming a “new you”? Is changing yourself for the better on the cards in 2018? Before you set any resolutions read on...Making positive health changes does not have to be as hard as you may think. Walking 30 minutes a day in addition to your current daily activities can burn 200 - 300 extra calories per day. Do this five times a week and that’s an extra 1000 calories minimum burnt in just one week! Benefits include body fat loss, improved circulation and reduced risk of heart disease. When a “new you” is the goal, sometimes small, regular changes are best. These then become new healthy habits and before you know it you’re walking 10-20,000 steps a day without even thinking about it.

Why not give it a go? All you need is a little space and a timer. That’s it! • Static jog for 2 minutes (warm up) • Body weight squats for 30 seconds, rest for 10 seconds and repeat 6 times • High knees for 30 seconds, rest for 10 seconds and repeat 6 times • Star jumps for 30 seconds, rest for 10 seconds and repeat 6 times • Mountain climbers for 30 seconds, rest for 10 seconds and repeat 6 times • Press ups, 10 reps for 3 sets resting no longer than 30 seconds • Sit ups, 10-20 reps for 3 sets resting no longer than 30 seconds

Be patient. Small, realistic adjustments that you can maintain can make a massive difference. As can knowledge. If we knew how long it took to burn off the calories in the foods we eat, would we make more informed decisions about our diet? When you consider a 42g bar of Dairy Milk (a Christmas staple!) is about 230 calories, it might take about five minutes to eat and a split second to make the decision, but the reality is, if you already consume over the number of calories you need, you would have to walk just over 30 minutes at a normal pace to burn off that 230 calorie bar of chocolate.

We list many fitness related articles on our website to help you take steps to becoming a “new you” this new year.

Here is a simple home work-out that requires no equipment, maybe a little googling and about 15-20 minutes of your time a day.

We wish you all a very happy 2018 Make this year count The Strength and Physique Team

The Lord of Milan Herbert Kilpin was born in 1870, above a butcher’s shop, 191 Mansfield Road (pictured above). Kilpin’s day job was as a lace maker in the Adams building, but he was always a big fan of football and grew up playing in the Arboretum park, not far from his home. Kilpin played for two amateur clubs, Notts Olympic and a church team called Saint Andrews on the Forest Recreation Ground. Whilst working in the Adams building, he became good friends with an Italian man called Edoardo Bosio, who offered him a job in Turin which he accepted. In 1899 Kilpin moved to Milan where he met with a group of friends in a bar and they formed Milan Football and Cricket Club. Their first match was in January 1900 with Kilpin as the owner, manager, player and later captain. He often played as a midfielder, although in the latter part of his career he became a defender, before finishing his career as a forward. Kilpin’s Milan team won the first Italian football league three times and over the next few decades would become one of the biggest and most successful football clubs in the world.

Robert Nier has written a book about Kilpin called The Lord of Milan, and talks more about his early life in Nottingham; “I don’t think he’s ever got much recognition in Nottingham because he was never a professional footballer here, he was an amateur, so he wasn’t good enough to play for either County or Forest at the time. He also left Nottingham and I don’t think he ever returned.” The Lord of Milan is available in all good book stores, including the Nottingham Tourism Centre.

ish!! b b u R h it W y la P s id K t Le The toy market is booming these days, and with special offers, sales and rock-bottom prices, it’s easy to pick up flashing, whirring toys and games on the high street. If you’d like a more environmentally-friendly option for your little one, making games and toys from scrap materials (‘rubbish’ in some people’s eyes!) is a great way to save money, spend time together and save the planet! If you have a spare shoe box lying around (or if not, it’s an excuse to go shoe shopping!), it makes a wonderful post-box. Cut a slit in the front, cut ‘EIIR’ out of card and paint (I used leftover red car touch-up paint to give it a lovely gloss). My little boy loves playing with his post-box, and it stops him ‘posting’ my phone into the bin! An old DVD case makes an excellent travel drawing set – tuck some paper and pencils inside and it’ll keep your budding Picasso entertained on long journeys or during restaurant meals (for a short while at least!). It’s an oldie but a goodie – toilet roll tubes and wooden lolly-sticks can be turned into hours of fun – using paint, glue, glitter and accessories to transform them into little characters. Use Google for ideas and you won’t be disappointed!

Free or low cost craft workshops

Local libraries are a fantastic resource and put on lots of free activities – sing-alongs, craft sessions and special events. Every so often, some companies put on free craft events in-store – including Lush, Hobbycraft and Toys R Us. Worth checking out if there’s one near you.

Local scrapstores

Don’t have enough scrap materials of your own? Companies donate their unwanted materials and objects to local scrapstores, and you can become a member for a small fee. With a little imagination, donated materials make incredible craft and play accessories! PLASTIC is FANTASTIC How to – or is it? become Plastic Clever in 2018

Plastic pollution is becoming one of the biggest man-made threats of the • When buying a drink modern world, and at the rate the in a cafe or pub, say “No issue is growing, us kids (and our straw please!” and reduce kids’ kids) are going to have to pick the amount of single-use up one environmental clean-up bill in the future. plastic straws you use

Did you know? • Over the last 10 years humans have produced more plastic than during the last century. • Around 60% of this is single-use - used once and then thrown away, and about a truck‛s worth of plastic enters the world's oceans every single minute. • This contributes to the deaths of 1 million seabirds and 100,000 sea mammals every year, and it‛s estimated that by the year 2050 there‛ll be more plastic in the oceans than fish.

But we’re not bitter or full of doom and gloom. No, instead we are hopeful and optimistic that we can avert this crisis if we all do our bit and make a positive impact in 2018. So, we are asking the people of Nottingham to join us in the fight against plastic pollution and to make becoming ‘Plastic Clever’ one of their New Year’s Resolution for the coming year.

• Carry a refillable coffee cup around with you so you don‛t have to use a non-recyclable cup and lid again. • Use a refillable water bottle and get free fill ups from cafes and restaurants - it will save you a lot of money and it will cut down the amount of single-use plastic bottles you use. • Carry a bag for life and save money by not using single-use plastic bags.

By the way, Plastic Clever doesn’t mean Plastic Free Taking these steps and making that is actually very difficult some small changes may not to achieve. Becoming Plastic Clever is very simple and is all seem like much, but if every about you reducing the BIG 4 one of us made these simple single-use plastic polluters (bags, commitments, together this cups + lids, straws and bottles). will lead to a huge positive As well as helping the environment, impact. it will probably save you a fair bit of money too.

WE WANT YOU! Plastic Clever Cafes and Businesses

Cafes, organisations and businesses are often responsible for using and distributing vast amounts of single-use plastic items: the BIG 4 plus plastic cutlery. But it doesn’t have to be this way! We’d like to work with and help as many local companies as possible in 2018 to help them achieve and celebrate a Plastic Clever status. See www.BePlasticClever.co.uk for more details. Thanks for reading. Amy (14) and Ella (12) hello@kidsagainstplastic.co.uk
