Viva España!
Tapas originate from Spain. They are small plates of food usually served with drinks. In Andalucia, where we recently had a holiday, tapas are still served free with drinks! Why not throw a tapas night? Green olives and good bread are a must, along with a few other dishes. Here are some of my favourites. Oh and remember Patatas Bravas with the sangria and cerveza..... Hot, Hot, Hot Garlic Prawns Chorizo & Spicy 380g uncooked king prawns Tomato Sauce
1kg baby new potatoes 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp paprika 170g chorizo - sliced for the sauce 1 medium onion - chopped 400g tin tomatoes 2 cloves garlic - chopped 2 tbsp olive oil 1 red chilli - chopped 1 tbsp tomato puree salt & pepper white wine/sherry (optional) method
Heat oven to 200°C. Boil potatoes in a large pan of salted water until cooked. Drain & place in a roasting tin. Crush slightly so they crack open. Toss in olive oil, sprinkle with paprika and bake until they have crispy edges (about 25 mins). Meanwhile, fry the chorizo slices in a non stick pan til they go crisp. Drain off some oil and mix in with crispy potatoes. For the sauce, heat oil in a small pan, gently cook the onion & garlic til soft. Careful not to burn. Add chilli & tomato puree & cook for 2 mins. Add splash of wine & boil til reduced. Add tomatoes, bring to boil then simmer gently til reduced to thick sauce (30 mins). Liquidise to a smooth sauce. Serve sauce on top of spuds or in a separate jug. (serves 6-8)
2 tbsp olive oil 2 cloves garlic -thinly sliced 1 - 2 red chillies - finely sliced 1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce 1 tbsp parsley - chopped
method
Heat oil in a pan and gently cook the garlic and chilli slices for a few minutes. Add prawns to the pan and cook until they turn pink. Add the sweet chilli sauce. Mix well and serve sprinked with parsley.
Baked Tortilla Squares
2 tbsp olive oil 2 med onions - thinly sliced 1 potato (250g) - thinly sliced 2 cloves garlic - crushed 6 large eggs 2 tbsp parsley - chopped salt & pepper method
Heat oven to 200°C. In a large non-stick frying pan gently fry the onion, potato & garlic until they are cooked. This may take quite a while so be careful not to burn. Cool the mixture down. Break eggs into a bowl, add parsley and the cooled potato & onion mixture. Season really well then tip into a well oiled 20cm square non-stick baking tin. Bake for 20 mins or until cooked and browned on top. Tip out of tin and cut into squares. (makes 16)

HOW TO CONTACT YOUR LOCAL BEAT TEAM ST ANN’S POLICE STATION St Ann’s Wells Road NG3 3HR 101 Ext: 811 6770/6771
BEAT TEAMS Mapperley Ward PC James North 07702 141861
From Inspector Simon Allardice... Last time I told you that my team was working hard to make NG3 a safer place to live and this stance hasn’t changed. Recently heroin with a street value of £12,500 was taken out of circulation after officers spotted a car driving erratically along The Wells Road, St Ann’s.
PC Andy Cochran 07792 437359
They pulled the vehicle over and discovered the drugs in a white bag on the centre console.
PC Brian Dacunha 07792 437358
The 56-year-old driver from St Ann’s admitted possession of heroin with intent to supply in court recently. He also admitted driving without the correct licence or insurance. He was jailed for three years.
St Ann’s Ward PC Jeanette Stasuik 07792 437306 PC Paul Whant 07792 437361 PC Paul Deane 07792 437357
We are committed to ridding the streets of drugs and punishing those who flout the law, but we need you to help us in our fight against crime. With the great weather we’ve been having it’s tempting to fling the windows open and carry on with the housework or gardening but make sure you’re not leaving your home open to thieves.
your belongings. Shed security is also important as the items in there can be extremely valuable and yet easily accessible due to the flimsy wooden construction. The tools, if stolen, can also be used to break into your house. Simple steps can help to put off potential thieves; • Fit a tough pad bar. • Fit strap hinges secured with coach bolts. • Chain items together or to a ground anchor with a good quality chain. • Make a note of serial numbers and mark property. You can register your belongings on www.immobilise.com • Use security lighting. • Fit a battery-operated alarm. In your shed, home and car, make sure that you don’t leave anything on display to tempt passers-by. If you see anything unusual call Nottinghamshire Police on 101 or 999 in an emergency.
If you decide to go out into the garden or upstairs, make sure you lock your doors – it only takes seconds for an offender to go into your house and steal Find your Safer Neighbourhoods team by entering your postcode on the homepage of www. nottinghamshire.police.uk

MUSICAL roundup If you are involved in a choir, singing group or band then we would love to hear from you. Every month, space permitting, we will include the latest news, concert information and forthcoming events. You just need to email us at: info@ng5.org.uk by the first Friday of the month.
Bestwood Male Voice Choir in Concert
Bestwood MVC performed to a capacity audience at Hucknall Central Methodist Church on Saturday 27 April, under it’s Musical Director, Mirek Rus. This followed the unfortunate but unavoidable cancellation of the Len Hogg Tribute Concert, back in January, due to the bad weather. However, on this occasion, the tribute to the choir’s founder member, the late Len Hogg, was combined with celebrating 50 years of the Central Methodist Church. Soloists were Derek Heppennstall from the top tenor section and Adrian Griffiths from the bass section, who amused everyone with his rendition of ‘I married a wife’, accompanied on the piano by his own wife, the choir’s Deputy Musical Director, Hilary Griffiths. As usual, John Pritchard gave a superb performance as MC, delighting the audience with a number of amusing stories and anecdotes. On the night a very healthy £655 was raised for the Central Methodist Church funds.
A Golden Sun Shines On A (Retiring) Golden Chorus
The Chorus ended their championship year with the sun shining brightly upon them in Bournemouth as they sang in this year’s Barbershop annual gathering. As retiring Champions they did not compete, but opened and closed the chorus competition as part of a long, but fun, Saturday. Sunday was a day of rest except for the Chorus quartets. ‘Homespun’ who is the Williams family, a dad and his three sons, took the bronze medal in a tight quartet final, their first appearance in the competition. The senior quartet ‘The Grand Dads’, appeared in the semi-finals, achieving a personal best and Director Zac Booles contributed, arranging the song ‘Oklahoma’ for quartet gold medal winners ‘The Emerald Guard’. A good day! Women sing Barbershop and our ‘sister’ chorus ‘Gem Connection’, also based in Long Eaton, celebrated their 15th birthday with a show on the 11th May. Grand Central was honoured to appear and help them celebrate. A full house enjoyed a superb evening of singing. The Chorus is Toronto bound at the end of June representing the UK in the International and sponsorship is still being sought from East Midland businesses. There are three levels, Gold (£1000) Silver (£500) and Bronze (250), Nelson on 07967091202 is the man to call if interested or e-mail as below. See the website www.grandcentralchorus.com for up to date information and contacts. The e-mail address is publicity. gcc@gmail.com. Rehearsals are at Harrington School, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4BJ, every Wednesday at 7.15.pm. You will be most welcome.

Students at Porchester Junior School have said a big thank you to representatives of the ‘Friends of Porchester Junior School’ for a new adventure playground called the ‘Trim Trail’. Rosie Elliott age 11 is a student at the school and said it has improved break time. “It’s really good, it’s not just a playground; there are lots of fun things to play on and it’s safe too.” Pam Jones who is Chair of the ‘Friends of Porchester Junior School’ said that there had been many fundraising events to raise the money for the ‘Trim Trail’. Pam says they still have plans to expand further, and have more events lined up too, “We all feel really proud of what we have achieved. It has been nice to have a goal to work towards and we have been rewarded by how happy the children are to have the equipment in place. We will continue to fundraise for whatever the school needs and our motto is that our fundraising should benefit the whole of the school.” For anyone interested in attending the next event the school is holding a Summer Fair on Saturday 6 July between 1.30-4 pm, where there will be many fun activities, games and stalls for families and friends to enjoy.

There is a strange and striking building just inside the grounds of the City Hospital, that looks as if it might have just landed from some strange world. The work of architect Piers Gough, it is the Maggie’s Centre, Nottingham – a recent addition to the network of 15 such centres. The design and layout by Paul Smith is slightly quirky but very accessible and it always feels a bit like coming home, or a visit to a close and dear friend. Every room has a different feel - a quiet retreat, or a reading room, or the friendliest kitchen. Maggie’s offers free emotional, practical and social support to people with cancer and to their families and friends; the centres are there for people at any stage of any type of cancer and no appointments are necessary. Maggie’s Nottingham serves the East Midlands Cancer Network, covering Nottingham, North Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire – an area of approximately 4 million people. Within this area, there are over 20,000 new cases of cancer a year. Since opening in November 2011, Maggie’s Nottingham has seen more than 8000 people who come not for medical diagnosis but for warmth, welcome and wisdom as well as the best teas and biscuits on the Hospital Campus But Maggie’s is more than tea and biscuits – though don’t underestimate the value of those essentials – visitors can find pampering, benefits advice, one-to-one sessions, and chats with the staff, led by
Centre Manager Kate Martin, and the team of volunteers. Maggie’s then is a wonderful place – stylish, sensitive and supportive – and that goes for the staff and volunteers as much as the building. Anyone that has not visited Maggie’s can do so out of interest (rather than out of need) but if faced with the ordeal of cancer, whether as patient, carer or family, there is no better source of solace, support and succour than Maggie’s Nottingham. Keeping this service going is not cheap and the team at Maggie’s Nottingham welcome support at their events, donations from individuals and corporate sponsors to continue their much-valued services. More information from Angela Kehoe. Fundraising Organiser Maggie's Nottingham; 0115 924 6211. www. maggiescentres.org

Why should I consider setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney? Lasting Power of Attorney is not just for the elderly. We know that we should write a will, but few people are aware that they should also consider a Lasting Power of Attorney. People sometimes take it for granted that they will be able to look after their own every day affairs and make decisions for themselves. Sadly the ability to do this often decreases as we grow older. This could be for a number of reasons such as an accident, physical illness or the onset of a metal illness; all of which could result in you having difficulties in managing your day to day affairs. Lasting Powers of Attorney are designed to be recognised by banks, financial institutions, care homes and local authorities as well as tax and pensions authorities. Although this is something that we do not like to think about, these difficulties can be overcome by the preparation of one document, a Lasting Power of Attorney. It is a serious and powerful document about which you will want straightforward and down to earth legal advice. A Lasting Power of Attorney gives someone you trust, usually a relative or friend, the power and legal authority to act on your behalf in the event that you aren’t able to do so for yourself. There are safeguards to make sure your wishes are carried out and you
will have peace of mind in knowing that these tasks will be undertaken by someone of your choosing. If you do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place and later become mentally incapacitated, your husband, wife, children or other relatives may face long delays and considerable expense in applying to the Court of Protection to get access and take control of your finances. Local firm QualitySolicitors Yates & Co have introduced a scheme to encourage local people to plan ahead by considering setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney. Concerned by the general lack of awareness of this issue, we have put together a very special offer to help people with the documents and the complete registration process. Present this advert to claim a full £50* discount against our usual costs.

This is the first of an occasional series of articles by local professional photographer Pete Jenkins, helping you get the most out of your photography. With the summer here many of you will be looking at taking some photographs of your summer holidays and activities. Do you find that your pictures don’t always look as good as you had hoped? Perhaps I can help?
Framing the photograph! By framing I mean how the picture is composed not how it is presented to be hung on a wall! When people show me their holiday snaps, often one of the things that I see that makes the photograph lose impact is that the subject is lost in the frame. What should be a lovely family picture ends up being lost in the background. Most of the time all it takes is to move closer to your subject so that the subject (in this case the family) fill the frame. Sometimes the excitement of the subject matter and taking the photograph means that little attention is paid to the picture and then it can be disappointing by being on the slant as well as too far away and not even the central theme of the picture. When you are looking at the picture before you take it try and check what it looks like. With today’s modern cameras it is very easy to see how the picture looks as you press the shutter. A little more attention gets you a much more pleasing shot. On almost all of today’s consumer cameras the focussing point is in the middle of the viewfinder. It is very easy for people to simply put the focussing point over the subjects face. This usually leaves a pic that has a huge amount of space around the subject and lacks impact. Your camera will have a half pressure setting on the shutter that allows you to compose your shot by setting the focus on the subject and then moving the camera to get better framing. Once you have the picture you want you press the shutter all the way to get your pic.

Students from Porchester Junior School have been getting a real taste of the business world by becoming entrepreneurs for a school project. Students were taught about the meaning of enterprise, creativity and teamwork, finally developing and bringing to market a product of their own design. To the delight of staff at the school, the students involved in the project accumulatively raised a whopping £163.02 profit! Miss Beresford, Deputy Head at Porchester Junior School said the project ran over a number of weeks and exceeded expectations both in students’ learning, and their business acumen. She said, “We have never attempted anything like this before and were unsure how things would develop. However, the students worked extremely hard and gained new knowledge in key life skills and enterprise. I am extremely proud of the students’ undoubted skill and was delighted, not only at the amazing overall profit, but with the great ideas that the students were able to bring to fruition.” The students have decided that the profit from their young entrepreneur project will go to a charity that they will choose from a shortlist of student’s suggestions- even though they were offered the chance to keep it! Overall winners in the project were the ‘Budget Busting 5’ who sold milkshakes and produced a profit of £51.51.

FREE PAINT SCHEME
Nottinghamshire County Council run a Community RePaint scheme at Beeston, Calverton, Newark and Warsop Recycling Centres. Public donations of paint accepted at these sites are checked by the site staff and any tins that contain good quality reusable paint are put aside in a designated shelved paint cabin. This reusable paint is then given away free of charge, throughout the year, to community and voluntary groups registered on the scheme. The paint cabins are filling up well with reusable paint so we’re inviting groups to apply so that they can get their hands on some free paint. Over 100 groups have received around 12,000 litres of reusable paint so far but we’re always keen to help even more. For more information go to: h t t p : / / w w w . n o t t i n g h a m s h i r e . g o v. uk/living/waste/recyclingadvice/ communityrepaint/ We’re also opening these schemes to Nottinghamshire residents but this is only at special open evenings. The Queen, The Bread and The Stars by Bob Massey
Thomas William Bush was born in Nottingham and baptised on 22nd May 1839 at St Peters Church. His parents were John and Mary Bush who lilved on Leeside where they had a dyeing business.
The new telescope produced a magnification of 1400 and was very precise. When exhibited it was the star of the show inviting praise from all who saw it.
Thomas did not enter the family business however, choosing instead to become a baker and grocer. He set up shop at 102 Canal Street, Nottingham. Around 1842 he married Martha who was two years younger. They settled down to family life but unfortunately did not have any children.
The exhibition was visited by a large number of important people including Queen Victoria. The Queen’s attention was drawn to Thomas’ telescope as one of the most remarkable features of the exhibition. It was also viewed by the Prime Minister. Mr Gladstone. who arranged a private interview with the maker.
Baking bread during the night for the morning shoppers, Thomas was fascinated with the stars. During his breaks he studied the heavens while the bread baked. A very practical man, Thomas decided to build a telescope so that he could study the heavens more clearly. He pored over all the available literature and was self taught in astronomy, mathematics and mechanics. Thomas made many of the telescope parts himself, even making tools so that the precision work could be carried out. Over a period of years he made several telescopes and in July 1870 exhibited his latest work at the Workman’s International Exhibition in London. This exhibition was where ordinary working men could display their skills and products. The telescope, a reflecting model, was 13” in diameter and presented many novel features in its design. All parts were manufactured by himself except the cast iron base, which was made to his design and the lenses, which were imported from Steinheil of Munich. Parts were cast in brass and iron. Lenses were ground and polished and scales and gears were marked and engraved. All this work took up all his free time and he had little sleep.
As a result of this interveiw, Thomas received a visit from the Astronomer Royal, G.B Airy, and was awarded a Gold Medal for his work. In Nottingham, where Thomas worked, the sky was often obscurred by chimney smoke. In 1876 Thomas was able to build an observatory in Mapperley where the air was much cleaner. Thomas went on to become pioneer of astronomy and a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. He became very interested in the education of the young, sitting on school and education boards and using his influence to champion education locally. In 1891 he moved to Wiley in Shropshire to become Lord Foresters astronomer. He then moved to East Grinstead and set up an observatory for Fredrick Hanbury with his new 24” telescope. It was here that Thomas died in 1928. The observatory was then taken over by the young Patrick Moore of Sky at Night fame. Mapperley’s very own Thomas W. Bush had played an important part in the early study and understanding of the stars and science education.
I am researching the history of Mapperley and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail. com or post via NG5 magazine.

The Apprentice – Fired or Resigned? Lessons from the Employment Tribunal
After watching the latest series of The Apprentice on BBC1, the winner of the 2010 show, Stella English, must be reflecting on the consequences of suing Lord Alan Sugar’s company for Constructive Unfair Dismissal in the East London employment tribunal. Lord Sugar has publicly denounced the “claim culture” which, in his opinion, is exemplified by the type of claim brought by Ms English and said he would not settle the claim by paying her off. Rather he was willing to incur the legal costs of seeing the matter through to a final hearing because he did not believe that Ms English was entitled to compensation. Stella English was announced as the winner of The Apprentice in December 2010 and was issued with a 12 month fixed term contract, on a salary of £100,000, with Alan Sugar’s company, Viglen Limited. Only 5 months into the contract she resigned but concerned about the effect of her resignation on the integrity of the show, and given that Ms English said she had financial problems, Lord Sugar offered Ms English a further 6 month contract, on £100,000, with a company of which he was the Non-Executive Chairman, YouView Television Limited. In early October 2011 Ms English resigned from this second role and sued for Constructive Unfair Dismissal. The first mistake that claimants often make is to under estimate the difficulty of winning a claim for Constructive Unfair Dismissal. The burden of proof is on the claimant to prove that the employer behaved in a way that destroyed or seriously damaged trust and confidence in the employment relationship. It is usually very difficult to establish that the employer’s conduct is so serious that an employee is entitled to resign. It is important to assess the strength of
the evidence before running a Constructive Unfair Dismissal. The second mistake Ms English made was to give weak and inconsistent evidence to the tribunal. Her case for Constructive Unfair Dismissal rested on her assertion that there was no real work for her to do at either company, that the roles were a “sham” and that she was an “overpaid lackey” with little, or no, contact with Lord Sugar. The tribunal heard extensive evidence on the screening process that applicants go through, including the “Talk of Doom” during which contenders were told of the sort of role and position they should expect if they won. There was never any promise of being Lord Sugar’s ‘right hand woman’. There was even a video clip of the claimant being interviewed on breakfast TV, in which she explained the duties that went with the role – which didn’t include day-to-day contact with Lord Sugar. But the biggest failing in the claimant’s evidence was the fact that she omitted any explanation as to why she resigned at the time. If something so serious had happened, thus entitling Ms English to resign, what was it? When asked, the claimant simply said that the job was not for her and she didn’t want a “9-5” office job. When dismissing her case the tribunal judge said that this was a claim that should never have been brought. The third, and last, mistake Ms English made was to be oblivious to the consequences of losing an employment tribunal claim. Many people would be grateful for the opportunity to work in such a well-paid job. Whether there are any other potential employers who will offer her anything half as good, remains to be seen.
