It’s a Wrap!
At around £1 for a pack of 8, wraps are a regular on my shopping list. As well as an alternative to bread for pack-ups they can be used for some delicious hot family meals and snacks. Here are some of my kids favourites...
Chilli Chicken Enchiladas
4 large flour tortilla wraps For the filling 2 tbsp olive oil 400g chicken breast - sliced into strips 1 red pepper - sliced 1 onion - halved & sliced 2 garlic cloves - finely chopped 2 red chillies - finely chopped salt & pepper For the sauce 5 tbsp passata 1 tbsp white wine vinegar 2 tbsp oyster sauce 2 tbsp sweet chilli sauce 2 tsp sugar 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp oregano tabasco sauce to taste salt & pepper For the topping 150g cheddar - grated 2 tbsp sour cream (optional)
Method
Chorizo & Cheese Quesadillas
4 large flour tortilla wraps 2 tbsp olive oil For the filling 2 tbsp tomato ketchup 150g grated red leicester cheese 16 slices chorizo
Method
Spread the ketchup over two of the wraps, place 8 slices of chorizo on top and cover both wraps with cheese, then place the other wrap on top so you have two large round sandwiches. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large non stick frying pan, when hot, add one of the quesadillas. Fry for a couple of minutes til golden, using a fish slice flip and fry for a couple of mins on the other side. Add the other tbsp oil and repeat with the other quesadilla. Remove, slice and enjoy!
Heat oven to 180°C. Grease a square oven proof dish. Make the filling first. Heat the oil in a large pan, cook chicken, remove with slotted spoon & place to one side. Fry peppers, onion, garlic & chillies until just cooked (add more oil if necessary). Put chicken back into the pan and season to taste. Now make the sauce. Add all ingredients to a small saucepan and heat gently for 10 mins. Check seasoning and adjust accordingly. Now to put it all together...add 3 tbsp of sauce to the chilli chicken mix, spread 2 tbsp of sauce on the bottom of the dish. Warm the tortillas up to make them easier to handle. Split the filling between the 4 wraps. Place the filling in the middle of the wrap, sprinke a bit of cheese on, tuck the sides in and roll up. Place the four wraps in the oven proof dish. Use the rest of the sauce to cover the wraps, dot the sour cream over and sprinkle with the cheese. Bake for 20 mins until golden and sizzling.
Samosas
Making samosas out of flour tortillas couldn’t be easier. The 7” size works best. A pack of 10 wraps will make 20 samosas. Before you start, make some glue out of 1tbsp flour mixed with 2tbsp water. Use this to stick the edges down. When you are ready warm the wraps up for 10 secs in the microwave (2 at a time is fine). When pliable - cut each in half. Using your finger put some glue down the flat side and wrap into a cone shape. Press the seam to make sure they are stuck. Spoon in your favourite filling leaving enough room at the top to seal with the glue. Now you can brush with oil and bake on a tray in the oven (200˚C) for 10 mins. Or you can shallow fry for a couple of minutes each side until golden brown. There are loads of different fillings you could use: traditional spicy potato and pea, beans and cheese, spicy rice and mince, even chocolate buttons and sliced banana!!

After a precarious existence since taking over publication of the Guided Walks booklet from the County Council in 2010, the Nottinghamshire Guided Walks Partnership is looking forward to a more successful year. Funding the free booklets of guided walks with its accompanying web-site has been a constant head-ache, but significant grants have improved this year’s prospects. Pictured above are Alkane Energy’s Project Manager Colin Rose and Diane Thorpe (Project Co-ordinator) at their methane-to-electricity plant at Gedling Country Park. Since May 2012 it has been removing potentially dangerous levels of methane gas from the former pit workings, turning it into usable electrical power for the National Grid. Colin and Diane are presenting a cheque for £250 to Chris Thompson (NGW Chairman) and Treasurer Paul Wagstaff. Attending on the right are Mary Mills and Brian Cluff, NGW Partners. The Partnership has also been very fortunate in receiving a generous grant from the Big Lottery for this year’s publication, with an advertising contribution from the Ramblers. The booklets will be distributed throughout Nottinghamshire during March and April, via County and City libraries, country parks, information centres and similar outlets. It will contain over 150 walks led by experienced leaders from most of the walking clubs and societies in the County, with a similar number of health walks. This information will also appear on the web-site www.nottsguidedwalks.co.uk from where it can be downloaded. This year, as an experiment, the web-site will add some short self-guided walks, with detailed instructions and informative photos for five different routes, intended for families and small groups perhaps new to country walking.

Will you be thriving or surviving this year? Lacking Self Belief‌? Worn down with other problems or issues‌?
Sometimes problems come and go. If we have strong personal foundations, and are resourced enough, we are more likely to move on quickly. If we are lacking self-esteem or, we are dogged by unhappy experiences and limiting beliefs perhaps from childhood experiences - we may not thrive so easily.

With the centenary of the First World War approaching one way we can contribute is to take a closer look at our war memorials and ask ourselves who were the men behind the names? I chose a name at random from one Nottingham war memorial and set out to find out something about the life behind the name - William Eric Woodward. Through researching the census records, I traced his nephew living in Derby. War records, Scouting and other archives gave me a wealth of information allowing me to piece together much of Eric’s short life. Born in 1899, William lived on Gawthorne Street, New Basford. His father, a house decorator, died dward oo W ic Er William in 1908 and his mother took up this occupation to support Eric and his younger sister Agnes. Eric was a keen scout, joining the 1st Caledonian troop in 1909. The troop met at Blackwood camp close to the newly built Nottingham prison. A Memorial Gateway still marks the entrance to Blackwood commemorating all Scouts who died in the First World War. Eric’s sister, Agnes, later became Akela of the scout troop. Corporal William Eric Woodward, Durham Light Infantry died on the 29th June 1919 in Leicester Military hospital and is buried in Basford cemetery. He is one of 15 names commemorated on the memorial windows at St Andrews with Castle Gate Church in Nottingham. The charity War Memorials Online (www. warmemorialsonline.org.uk) seeks photographs and details of all memorials to assist them in compiling a lasting tribute to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Perhaps you can assist this project or uncover some details of the lives behind the names on your local war memorial? © Andrew Adam

Gedling want pet food donations for Women’s Aid ‘Pets Project’ Gedling Borough Council is asking for pet food donations to support a project that provides a foster home for pets from families who are affected by domestic violence. The ‘Pets Project’ run by Women’s Aid Integrated Services (WAIS) helps women and their children who need to leave abusive relationships but are scared to leave pets behind with an abusive partner. Most refuges and hostels are unable to house animals, but the WAIS team can organise for a carer to foster pets and re-unite them with the owner once they are ready. The owner is required to pay for the pet food and the council are asking for customers and staff to give pet food donations to help ease the burden on the families. People can donate food at the council offices in Arnot Hill Park, Arnold and all donations will then be passed onto WAIS who will allocate the food to the foster homes. For more information people can contact Sarah at Women’s Aid Integrated Services on 07971 337 264 or email sarah@wais.org.uk or visit www.wais.org.uk

Fifteen puppies, abandoned beside a Nottinghamshire canal, are now in loving homes thanks to the combined efforts of kind members of the public and a small charity. Discovered in cold conditions late last year, the puppies appeared to have been callously ‘dumped’. With ages ranging from around seven to eleven weeks, they were all cross-breeds and from five different litters. An alarmed dog-walker thankfully immediately alerted Animal Accident Rescue Unit – a small Nottinghamshire charity. Entirely run by volunteers, and with donations as its sole income source, taking on the puppies was a large pull on the charity’s team and resources. Through working with a vet practice, the charity’s volunteer dog fosterers plus dog welfare team, the charity is delighted to announce that every single pup has now been adopted and is thriving in new homes – like Toby (pictured). Animal Accident Rescue Unit would like to thank all those who helped either by donating food or funds, fostering and adopting these vulnerable puppies. The tireless work continues, however, and funds to help other animals at risk – as well as costs to help neuter the pups when they are old enough – are constantly needed. To help, call Animal Accident Rescue Unit on 0115-9321555,email:admin@aaru.org.uk, donate via www.animalaccident.org.uk. Cheque donations, made payable to Animal Accident Rescue Unit, can be posted to PO Box 5414, Burton Joyce, Nottingham NG14 5DT. Food donations can also be given most conveniently online, by using the charity’s ‘Wish List’ via the website.Donations of ‘time’ are always equally needed – whilst offering a most rewarding experience! To find out more, click on ‘Volunteer Roles’ on the main website, or call Recruitment on 0115-956 3799.

Don’t Forget Mother’s Day – 30 March Mothering Sunday was originally a Christian holiday dating back as far as the 17 Century. This is not to be confused with the American “Mother’s Day” that was created early in the 20th Century to celebrate mums and all they do. In 1913 Constance Adelaide Smith, from Nottinghamshire, read an article in a newspaper claiming that Britain planned to introduce the American Mother’s Day to Britain and that this would be celebrated on the second Sunday in May. Although Constance liked the idea of a day devoted to mothers, she decided it would be better to revive the traditional Christian holiday that was held on the fourth Sunday of Lent. What actually happened was a fusion of the two celebrations. With an influx of US servicemen into Britain during the second World War the day became more often referred to as Mother’s Day but the actual day it was celebrated was determined by the Christian calendar.
GIFT IDEAS Mother’s Day doesn’t have to be an expensive affair. Flowers, chocolates and spa vouchers are lovely ideas but for those wanting to move away from the commercial side of things here are some simple but thoughtful (and free) ideas: • Clean your room/tidy the house • Make a homemade card • Make a personalised present • Bake a cake • Print off some cheques pledging your time • Tell her you love her....priceless!!!
Interestingly Constance never married and had no children. She was buried in Coddington, Nottinghamshire where she had lived.

Ella’s Teen Talk:
Getting the most from sixth form....
I hate pressure. I am also very pathetic at making decisions; so when someone puts pressure on me to make a decision it never goes too well. School is always putting me in this position and most recently they asked me to start applying to sixth form and college. That is a lot of pressure around a big decision.
Ella Higginbotham aged 16
I’ve heard so many people say that A-levels are one of the hardest things you will ever do (I know this because my 17 year old sister makes the stresses of it all very clear) so this doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence for the next two years. However, they say if you keep doing the things you enjoy then you will get through it, and that’s where I intend to start! My main priority is having friends that keep me grounded; whether that is the friends at my current school or making friends at a new college or sixth form. Surrounding yourself with a good group of people is just as important as everything academic, so try not to get too caught up in it all and remember the people that will help keep you sane through it! Of course I am not saying that the education side isn’t important, because actually in the end that is the whole point, so you do have to focus on what your strengths are. Choose a sixth form/ college where you will feel comfortable with the people and that offers the facilities that you would personally benefit from; choose your subjects wisely, think about that final results day and which subjects you feel you can really achieve in! Other than that, you have to remember that sixth form and college is an experience. Despite what you probably think, it isn’t there to try and ruin your life but to help build your dream future. My parents always tell me stories of how when they were in sixth form (which Next was a looooong time ago) they would sit and play games in the common room issue: and not put too much pressure on themselves. They are both happy and in good jobs and this helps put things into perspective for me. So take the Handling opportunity, have fun getting to know new people and take the challenges in Friends your stride because if you let stress take over then sixth form could be your worst enemy!

WHAT’S YOUR WORTH? The real value of many people’s incomes has shrunk considerably over the past few years as wages fail to keep up with inflation. This coupled with a large number of employers struggling to maintain their workforce let alone offer pay increases has created a culture of “put up and shut up” which is demotivating and negative which in turn inhibits growth. As the economic forecasts at the start of this New Year continue to show steady signs of recovery some of you will be considering a career move where potentially you feel you will be better rewarded and valued. I would always advise caution in this scenario. A proven track record with one employer is still an asset on your CV rather than jumping ship every few years or so. Knowing how to negotiate a pay increase is a skill once learnt that will serve you well throughout your working life. When setting out to achieve this, your attitude towards the exercise is key. It’s not a case of ‘me v. them’ rather an aim to work in partnership so that both parties are satisfied with the outcome. Here are my recommendations to consider when planning this type of negotiation. • Timing – judge your request on your knowledge of your employer’s current situation. If there are redundancies pending then it’s most definitely not the right time to try and negotiate. It would be far better to raise the matter at the time of a personal review or appraisal. • Research – The internet is very effective for assessing current market values. Look at job adverts, salary surveys and social media ie LinkedIn to see what salaries are being offered. You could also speak to colleagues within your current organisation doing similar roles – however
by Helen Jones
be careful with this as some employment contracts contain restrictive covenants which do not allow employees to discuss remuneration with each other. • Communicate – Even if your immediate line manager is not the ultimate decision maker they are likely to be involved at some point in the process so do make them aware of your intentions. • Be specific – build your case with solid examples of results that demonstrate your value. Can you use recommendations from colleagues who work with you on a daily basis? • Discuss – by definition negotiation is about discussion and compromise. It makes sense to demonstrate a level of flexibility. If budgetary restraints prohibit any chance of a salary increase maybe extra holidays or a bonus scheme would be acceptable? • Be quiet – know when to not speak. Don’t commit to an offer immediately – take time to consider. When closing your discussions be gracious, professional and polite. The world of work is actually a very small place and with social media and networking sites becoming increasingly powerful you never know who is talking to whom. Make sure your professional reputation remains unblemished. Gedling freezes council tax for two years! Gedling Borough Council is set to freeze its share of the Council Tax for the next two years. The proposal will be put forward for approval at Budget Council on 3 March. Cllr John Clarke, Leader of the Council said: “Gedling’s Council Tax is lower than about 80% of councils in the Country and given the unprecedented cuts in our funding from government, we could really do with the
34
extra income that comes from council tax. However, we recognise that many of our residents are struggling with the cost of living and in some cases, to even feed their families, so we don’t want to add to their burden by increasing council tax. Government has listened to representations we’ve made and changed the way that it is funding councils that freeze Council Tax in such a way that it is now a sensible thing for Gedling to do”.

From your Neighbourhood Beat Team..... We are nearing the end of our endurance test with the dark and relentlessly cold winter nights. In typical British fashion, we’ll have already rescued our shorts from the clutches of the ‘Winter Clothes Monster’, and be thinking about tackling the garden because the hedges need trimming desperately, and the lawns have started to grow again. The spring arriving can mean only one thing; sheds and garages are unlocked and the power tools come out. Check that your home insurance extends to the belongings you keep in your outbuildings. Keep doors locked and when you are working in the garden or on your car and close your shed or garage door so as not to advertise what you keep inside. Following a number of burglaries last year we need to enhance the security in our homes and gardens and we can do this with the help of a few simple but very important pointers. First of all, remember to lock your front and back doors if you are going out. It sounds like basic common sense, but some people forget to do this when they are going out especially if they are in a rush. Don’t assume the neighbours will be watching or the dogs will bark if they hear an intruder! Locking your doors will take a matter of minutes and will give you peace of mind whilst you are out. The same applies if you are going away for the Easter break; you want to be able to enjoy yourself and not have to worry about things back at home.
rooms. You might only be in the next room, but would you notice if someone snatched your mobile phone through an open window or hopped in and grabbed your laptop from the coffee table? Please be vigilant about this. Finally, please take a moment to consider the process you go through when answering a knock at your door. Do you know who is calling before you open it? Unfortunately, there are some dishonest people in this world. Be wary of strangers who come to your home without an appointment, offering a service or claiming to be from the council, a utilities company or any other organisation. Look through the spyhole or window or call to that person to establish who they are before opening your door. Always ask for identification and verify this by checking it against the telephone directory and calling the company they claim to work for. If you have any doubts about them, do not let them into your home. If they are genuine they will be more than willing to arrange at a later date, by which time you can check they are who they claim to be, and ensure there is someone at home with you when they next call. If in doubt, keep them out! We want you to be happy and safe in the warmer weather. Report any suspicious visitors to us on 101.
It may sound silly but you also need to remember to lock your doors when you are home and in the garden, and also don’t leave windows open in unattended

Why should I consider setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney? Lasting Power of Attorney is not just for the elderly. We know that we should write a will, but few people are aware that they should also consider a Lasting Power of Attorney. People sometimes take it for granted that they will be able to look after their own every day affairs and make decisions for themselves. Sadly the ability to do this often decreases as we grow older. This could be for a number of reasons such as an accident, physical illness or the onset of a mental illness; all of which could result in you having difficulties in managing your day to day affairs. Lasting Powers of Attorney are designed to be recognised by banks, financial institutions, care homes and local authorities as well as tax and pensions authorities. Although this is something that we do not like to think about, these difficulties can be overcome by the preparation of one document, a Lasting Power of Attorney. It is a serious and powerful document about which you will want straightforward and down to earth legal advice. A Lasting Power of Attorney gives someone you trust, usually a relative or friend, the power and legal authority to act on your behalf in the event that you aren’t able to do so for yourself. There are safeguards to make sure your wishes are carried out and you
will have peace of mind in knowing that these tasks will be undertaken by someone of your choosing. If you do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place and later become mentally incapacitated, your husband, wife, children or other relatives may face long delays and considerable expense in applying to the Court of Protection to get access and take control of your finances. Local firm QualitySolicitors Yates & Co have introduced a scheme to encourage local people to plan ahead by considering setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney. Concerned by the general lack of awareness of this issue, we have put together a very special offer to help people with the documents and the complete registration process. Present this advert to claim a full £50* discount against our usual costs.

Gedling Borough Council is urging people who are struggling paying their rent and council tax to get in touch to see if they are eligible for extra help. The council can provide ‘top up’ discretionary housing payments to people who have a shortfall in their rent or council tax and are already in receipt of benefits. People must apply for the funding and will need to show evidence that they are in financial hardship. The council has awarded top up payments to more than 230 applicants this year. Leader of the Council, Councillor John Clarke said: “There are many people who are feeling the pinch due to the government changes in their benefits. The discretionary payments are available to those who need it the most, we urge people to get in touch and apply for the extra help. We can’t guarantee that everyone will get help but we will consider each application on its individual merit.”

The council is advising that people apply as soon as possible because the funding is year on year and may change at the end of the financial year. The scheme offers help for a short period of time but it can be up to six months or more if the circumstances clearly show that the applicant needs longer help. People can apply for discretionary housing payments by contacting the council on 0115 901 3970 or email housingbenefits@gedling. gov.uk

Any Port In A Storm by Bob Massey
Mapperley has been famous for its bricks and brick makers since roman times. Brick yards sprang up all over Mapperley Plains during the Industrial Revolution as the demand for bricks grew. Smaller enterprises were all eventually swallowed up by bigger companies but in the 1870s there were still a lot of small businesses operating. Very often these businesses were a side line, another means of making money in time of uncertainty or bad weather. Farmers who had good clay on their land turned, what was for farming a liability, into a money making asset. One of these enterprising families were the Cotton’s who had a farm off Scout Lane. The Cotton’s operated a small brick kiln. In 1871 they employed William Maddock, a local bricklayer who had experience of kiln construction, to build a further kiln. Maddock had completed the main outline and building by the end of June and was leaving the inner clay seal to dry before building the abutments on the outside of the structure. A shortage of bricks and very wet weather combined to prevent the kiln being finished. The kiln was a bee hive shape with a chimney on the top. The lack of the abutments meant that the kiln had not yet been used. On the afternoon of Tuesday, 4th July 1871 the weather was still awful. Cotton and his father along with two other men, John May, the farm bailiff, and an agricultural
labourer call Gibson, were walking the farm inspecting the crops near his brick yard when the storm reached its height. As the thunder clapped the men decided to take shelter in the half completed kiln until the storm abated. While the men were inside the kiln it suddenly collapsed, trapping the men inside. Some 15 yards from the kiln was the brickmakers hut where Christopher Bee, the brickmaker and John Guy, an agricultural labourer, were sheltering. On hearing the noise they immediately ran over to the kiln and started to take off what remained of the roof. First they pulled Gibson out, then May followed by the Cottons. All were seriously injured. May had been completely buried in the collapse. His leg was broken in several places and he had been very badly crushed by the debris. Unfortunately he died within minutes of rescue before any medical help arrived. He left a wife, Harriett and eight children now without a father and husband to support them. The other men were rushed to hospital and although badly injured all eventually recovered. It was concluded at the inquest the following day that the very wet weather had not allowed the clay and mortar to set. This, coupled with the storm, and the lack of abutments, had caused the structure to collapse while the men were inside.
I am researching the history of Mapperley and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail. com or post via NG5 magazine.

Grout & About
Council’s solar energy boost in only six months!
For professional wall and floor tiling at affordable prices contact:
Andrew Foster Mobile: 0797 1184082 www.groutandabout.co.uk
Work starts on £1 million Gedling Country Park
Solar Panels installed at Gedling Borough Council have generated enough energy to run every computer in the council for four years and saved enough CO2 emissions to fill the Civic Centre twice – in only six months! The panels installed on the Civic Centre, the Jubilee House depot in Arnold, and on the Richard Herrod Centre in Carlton, have generated 110,000 kilowatts of free electricity during a six month period – enough to run 250 computers for seven hours a day for four years.
Work has begun on the £1 million Gedling Country Park on the site of the former 300 acre Gedling Colliery site.
As well as generating electricity, the panels have also saved 16,000m3 of CO2 emissions - that’s enough to fill up the entire Council’s Civic Centre twice over.
Contractors North Midland Construction will begin work next week starting with remedial work to make the site safe for entry for members of the public. This is the first in a number of phases of works taking place in the park. Phase two is expected to commence in May 2014 which will be the installation of the access road and car park and then followed by the installation of the children’s play area in August.
This is one of many ways in which the Council is aiming to reduce its energy consumption and carbon footprint. It has developed a sustainability strategy and action plan to tackle this.
The park is expected to be open to the public in the autumn. For more information and ongoing updates on the Country Park people can visit www.gedling.gov.uk/ gedlingcountrypark

Some of the Council’s key achievements so far include buying an electric car and installing an electric charging point, a publically accessible charging point will also soon be available in Arnold. The Council has installed motion sensitive lights and introduced a cycle loan scheme. It also supports the Eco Stars scheme which aims to reduce CO2 in the wider business community. Details of more eco-friendly initiatives are available in the Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan on the Council’s website.

MUSICAL roundup
If you are involved in a choir, singing group or band then we would love to hear from you. Every month, space permitting, we will include the latest news, concert information and forthcoming events. You just need to email us at: info@ng5.org.uk by the first Friday of the month.
Bestwood MVC Hand Over Charity Cheques
Ladies Harmony Chorus
Imari is a Ladies Harmony Chorus founded in 1985 and we love to sing. The chorus loves to perform too and is available to sing at any event. We will gladly help raise funds for charity by performing songs from our repertoire. So, if you are female and over 16 years old, come along and sing with us. We rehearse on Thursday evenings 7.30pm to 9.30pm at St Mary’s Church Hall, Victoria Road, Draycott DE72 3PS If you would like to book the chorus for your event, or want to find out more information, please contact:Jan Adamson (Events) 01332 674679 Linda Gourlay (Musical Director) 0115 932 5855
Towards the end of another busy year, Colin Pursglove, Chair of Bestwood MVC was delighted to hand over two cheques of £450 each to Macmillan Cancer Support Group and Treetops Hospice at a concert at Our Lady of Assumption Church in Beeston last November. Pictured in the photograph along with Colin from left to right are Janet Sanders, Charity Co-ordinator of Nightingale Macmillan Unit, John Griffiths, Patron of Treetops Hospice and Carol Rigley, Linda Gourley and Carol Harrison from the Imari Ladies Chorus. The funds had been raised at a joint concert with the Imari Ladies Chorus in September 2013 at The Chatsworth Theatre, Long Eaton. Grand Central Chorus – Looking Ahead Following their very successful 2013 Christmas Show, Grand Central Chorus have just announced the date and venue for their 2014 Christmas Show! It will be at 4.30pm on Sunday 7 December in the May Hall, Trent College, Long Eaton - so put that date in your diary now! Full details of guest performers and tickets will be confirmed shortly. Between now and then the chorus has a full schedule of performances and competitions, including the UK Barbershop Championships in Harrogate on Saturday 24 May when, as the 2012 Champions, they will again expect to be amongst the highest scorers from the record 48 choruses taking part.
The chorus welcome potential new members to come along to any of their weekly rehearsals on Wednesday evenings at 7.15pm at Harrington School, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4BJ. See their website www.grandcentralchorus.com for full details or follow them on Twitter @GrandCentralMen. If you would like Grand Central Chorus to sing at your event, contact Peter on 01530243822 or e-mail publicity.gcc@gmail.com. They can provide a quartet, small chorus or full chorus of up to fifty singers as required. Fees are negotiable and quality is guaranteed.
The community choir has another exciting year ahead. After raising over £1,600 for SOBS - Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide the choir have decided to plan another charity event for later this year. Rehearsals are well under way, 'Legends' is the theme for this years concert and all money raised will be donated to Teenage Cancer Trust. A new community choir will be launched in Bestwood on Thursday 6th March at the Emmanual Church Hall. There will be rehearsals
weekly from 7:30 - 9pm and it is £4 per session. There is no audition or joining fee, anybody is welcome! If you are interested in joining either the Brinsley or Bestwood Community Choir, please contact Charlotte via telephone 07581020959 or email yourcommunitychoir@ gmail.com. www.yourcommunitychoir.com

Flexible Working – or Flexible Wording? Political parties in the UK have long been aware of the opportunities involved in offering ‘family friendly’ employment law changes. As the workplace demands on employees have increased, juggling employment and family commitments has become increasingly stressful. Any change in the law which obliges employers to accommodate the family duties of their employees is bound to be popular with voters. The concept of ‘Flexible Working’ was introduced back in 2003. A request for this can be made by either parents or those acting in the capacity of parents (in regards to their children aged up to 16 or 17 if disabled) or by an employee connected to an adult requiring care (if the carer is the spouse/partner of the adult, a relative or co-habitee). Those making an application must have at least 6 months service with their employer and be the person providing the care. The number of successful applications for ‘Flexible Working’ though, is notoriously small. This is because the Government identified several grounds on which an application could be rejected. This includes issues such as the effect on performance, quality and meeting customer demand, as well as cost. Provided that an employer follows the proper process of meeting the employee, discussing and considering the request (and documenting this process), then it is fairly easy to reject any request if any of the grounds for doing so are made out. In April of this year however, the law will change, no doubt with some publicity, to widen the scope for ‘Flexible Working’. When this comes into place, any employee with 6 months service will be able to request ‘flexible working’ and there is no requirement that the employee be the carer of a child or adult. Although only one request can be made every 12 months, once the 30 million or so employees in the UK become entitled to request this, should we expect a transformation in working patterns? Probably not. The Government has retained, with identical wording, all of the grounds on which an employer is entitled to refuse a request and so even with an inevitable increase in requests, the proportion that are successful will remain miniscule. The moral of the story is: when there is an election on the horizon, be sure to read the small print of politicians’ promises. For more information on flexible working or any issue involving employment law please contact Paul Brill at Rothera Dowson solicitors on 0800 096 0998.
