Is your health condition stopping you being active? A health programme for people with medical conditions has been launched across our leisure centres. We’ve introduced a 12 week health programme called DNA Health for people who are aged 16 and over and are physically inactive and suffering from health problems. The programme aims to give people with conditions such as stress, anxiety, depression, diabetes and obesity an opportunity to try different

Feeling Positive! Ok, so here is a very frequent question we are asked about general health, nutrition and fitness. ‘Why am I failing?’ Let me stop you there for one second... what is failure? Is it stalling weight loss? Is it not completing a fitness programme due to exhaustion? There are many reasons we put ourselves down due to what we think is failure. What we tend to forget is how far we have come. About this time of the year, the new year resolutions are being tested. Have you maintained a healthier diet? Really?? Or have you reverted back to old ways but justifying it now by regularly exercising? If this is the case then yes, falling back into old unhealthy eating habits is a negative step, but you are still dedicated to making healthy life choices. Exercising regularly is still a positive step forward therefore you are still going in the right direction. Yes, progress may be slow, or slower than expected, the scales may be stuck for a week or two, but this doesn’t mean you are failing. There are so so many factors, variables, causes and effects to take into account when it comes to a slowing momentum in achieving a goal you set out to accomplish at the start of your journey. Ask yourself, how many times have you moved the goal posts to achieve something better than you expected? Then you question yourself when results are slow, forgetting you have already achieved your original goal! When you work with a health coach, like myself, we take into account many variables and break them down to really get to understand the

person we are helping. One of our most successful clients came to us with a poor diet and heavy social life that lead to an unhealthy lifestyle and sadly brought on painful dietary gout. Suffering in pain for too long, we got to work breaking down his lifestyle choices and establilshing some new routines. After six months working closely with us, this guy managed to alter his daily diet which in turn meant altering his social habits. We educated him on the cause and effect of choices that he was making and got him physically active by working through a progressive training programme. To this day he is one of our hardest working clients and most importantly, has managed to reverse the dietary gout he suffered from. No longer in pain, with our support, he continues to be physically active and is able to lead a healthier life. Most of us measure our achievements on the number the scales show us. If it is down we praise ourselves, if it is up we punish ourselves and question our dedication. Try instead to focus more on how you feel. Do your clothes fit better? Are you stronger? More alert? Sleeping better? These are all signs of positive forward progression and improving health. Improving your health should be taken as a whole rather than focusing on one thing - like the numbers on the scales. Forget the one negative and count all the positives. Be positive, think positive, produce a positive outcome.

Mother of the Bride or Groom or attending a race meeting or special event in 2016? At the Head in the Crowd Boutique we are now stocking Michaela Louisa, Renata and Glitz mother of the bride and groom outfits and occasion and cocktail dresses. We design and make all of our hats, hatinators and fascinators in our boutique, so unlike many other outfit providers where you only get the choice of one or two hats to match the outfit you buy, if you come to us to purchase your outfit, you can choose from dozens of hats, hatinators and fascinators to match your outfit choice, giving you the chance to complete your look with the headpiece that you really want and not one that is just off the shelf. If you already have your outfit, thats not a problem, bring it along to our boutique and we can colour match to your outfit and make you a hat that is really special, there is no extra charge for colour matching. We also have a wonderful selection of shoes, handbags and jewellery to complete your look.

Make your big events in 2016 a day to remember, as our name suggests, we aim to make you stand out as 'The Head in the Crowd'

30 Redhill Road, Arnold In 2012 the Burton Joyce Players introduced us to Pearl, Jan, Shelley and Linda, four fish packers from Hull who won half a million pounds at York Races. The Players’ spring production, Ladies Down Under, by Nottingham playwright Amanda Whittington, is the story of what happens next. Flushed with money and success, the “Ladies” decide to embark on the trip of a lifetime to Australia, but for our heroines, this is as much an emotional journey as it is a trip from the Gold Coast to the heart of the continent. This funny, heart warming and sometimes poignant play is on at Burton Joyce Village Hall, 7.30 pm Thursday 28th to Saturday 29th April. Tickets are £7 and can be obtained online from www.bjp.ticketsource. co.uk and from Burton Joyce Post Office from Wednesday March 23rd.

Girls Make It Happen Gets Over £114k Sport England Boost A Gedling sports project set up to get more women and girls active has been awarded £114,376 by Sport England. The Girls Make It Happen project will create more opportunities for women and girls in Gedling to be more active. A variety of fun, non-pressurised activities will be set up in the area, focussing on getting women together and trying something new!

them and at a time to suit them. It could be a group of women meeting at a café and going for a run or an outdoor bootcamp in the local park where women can bring their children along. There is something for everyone!” Councillor John Clarke, leader of Gedling Borough Council said: “We were so pleased to support Gedling Sports Partnership’s bid for this funding and are thrilled that the ‘Girls Make it Happen’ project will help the women and girls of the borough to get more active.” This project is one of over 40 projects to secure a share in £8.2 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England. Encouraging people to give sport a go, the fund empowers local communities to reach out to people who for one reason or another don’t exercise.

The Sports England funding was won by Gedling Sports Partnership who, with support from Gedling Borough Council, successfully bid for the money in the summer. The first Girls Make It Happen session took place back in October 2015 at Sherwood Academy, giving women and girls the chance to take part in a free recreational basketball session in a relaxed environment. Rachel Kemp, Director of Community Projects for Gedling Sports Partnership, said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive this Sport England funding towards total project costs of £174,959. We want to encourage more women and girls in Gedling to get involved in sport by creating a warm and welcoming environment, where participants can feel comfortable and confident taking part and have lots of fun. Girls Make It Happen is all about putting on sporting opportunities where women want

Announcing the funding, Sport England Director of Community Sport, Mike Diaper, said, “It’s great to be working with innovative projects like Girls Make It Happen which offer more people the chance to get active in a way that suits them best. Given the overwhelming benefits of being active, it’s important that age, gender, or income never prevent anyone from taking part.” Here are some of the exciting sessions taking place over the borough: Yoga Class – Every Monday, 6.30pm – 7.30pm, at Sherwood Academy (Lecture Theatre) Basketball – Every Thursday, 7pm – 8pm at Sherwood Academy You can find out more details of the programme on our website:

Situated in the heart of Nottingham, Revolucion de Cuba transports you straight to the heart of Havana. Located in a stunning building on Market Street, the cantina takes your breath away. With its high ceilings, shabby yet stylish interior and buzzing atmosphere the only thing missing was the 90 degree heat! Throughout our meal we were treated to live music from a great salsa band. We started our meal with pinchos (nibbles); crispy tortilla chips with homemade guacamole and fresh salsa. Our tapas plates were mouthwatering; patatas bravas, Cajun cream mushrooms, gambas pil pil (succulent king prawns tossed in butter, chilli, garlic and lime), pork belly skewers, chicken rumba skewers and honey roast veg. One member of our party went for the steak – cooked to perfection and served with a creamy rum sauce (of course!) We managed to share a mini dessert selection and a couple of cheeky cocktails. Gin served in a teapot was a first for me (bramble tea) and hot buttered rum hit the spot. After a meal, we headed upstairs where Salsa lessons had been held earlier. The atmosphere was

positively convivial! We were impressed with the dancing, it definitely felt like the streets of Havana rather than Nottingham. The upstairs bar also hosts Fiesta Friday!!! See their website for a run down of what they have to offer. Happy Hour with 2-4-1 cocktails is Monday to Saturday 5pm until 7pm, plus it is worth noting ‘Havana great time on Sunday’ where tapas, cocktails and coffee are 2-4-1. A great deal! Revolucion de Cuba really does have the WOW factor. Even the toilets are a talking point. Whether you're after the finest Cuban coffee, a full on Latin feast, classic cocktails or great live music, we've got it all at Revolucion de Cuba Nottingham.

Easter Treats Eggs have formed part of our Easter Celebrations for a very long time. In the Middle Ages Parish Priests would often request eggs as an Easter "tithe", a type of Church tax, and villagers would bring eggs to the Church to be blessed. A version of the tradition continues in some parishes to this day.

Here's a few Chocolate Easter recipes you might like to try. You don't need any special equipment, except for the Chocolate Krispie Egg which does require an Easter Egg mould, but these are easy to find in most high streets or on-line.

Eggs have traditionally been decorated and dyed (white eggs can be coloured golden, pink or green, using vegetable dyes like onion skins, beetroot or spinach) and given as gifts, or rolled down hills to see whose gets to the bottom first or hidden in the garden for children to find. Nowadays though, you are much more likely to receive a chocolate egg than a traditional hen's egg and chocolate (along with a roast leg of lamb) is probably the foodie treat we most associate with Easter.

Seriously Creme Egg Chocolate Easy Easter Mousse Krispie Egg Chocolate Truffles This recipe makes a lot of Truffles (about 60), you can halve the ingredients if you prefer, or make loads, vary the flavourings and coatings and give as lovely, rich, Easter gifts. 200g Cream Cheese, softened 350g icing sugar, sifted 500g plain chocolate (melted slowly in a heat-proof bowl over simmering hot water) 1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla essence Beat cream cheese in a large bowl until smooth. Gradually beat in the icing sugar until fully blended. Stir in the melted chocolate and vanilla until no white streaks remain. Refrigerate for roughly about an hour and then shape into bite-sized balls. You can roll the truffles in ground nuts, desiccated coconut, icing sugar or chocolate sprinkles or you can omit the vanilla and add a flavoured liqueur such as coffee, orange or almond.

This is a Fishwife's Kitchen exclusive, I think, as I have never seen this recipe anywhere else, it makes a very rich mousse so serve in tiny portions! 4 standard Chocolate Creme Eggs (I used Cadbury's) 50ml milk 4 tbsp cocoa powder 3 large egg whites Mini chocolate eggs for decoration

Carefully slice up the Creme Egg, roughly into quarters, and put along with the milk and cocoa in a solid-based saucepan. Heat on a very low temperature, stirring constantly until all the chocolate has melted. Transfer to a bowl and leave to cool for about 15 minutes. Whisk this mixture frequently to ensure it remains blended and smooth. Whisk the egg whites in a separate, clean, dry bowl until softly peaking. Use a metal spoon to fold half the whites into the the chocolate sauce to lighten it, then fold in the remainder. Turn the mixture into about 8 small cups (or sherry glasses) and chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours before serving. Decorate with chocolate mini eggs.

175g milk chocolate, broken into pieces 50g Rice Krispies cereal

Gently melt the chocolate pieces in a heatproof bowl over simmering water, or microwave on a low heat (checking regularly). Stir until smooth and then remove from the heat and stir in the Rice Krispies, mix well until until the Krispies are fully coated with chocolate. Spoon the mix into one half of your egg mould and press down using the back of a metal spoon, make sure you cover the whole mould but leave a deep dip in the middle and leave a thick edge. Cool in the fridge until set (15 mins or so). Once cool fill with mini chocolate eggs, chocolate buttons or other sweets of your choice, wrap in a pretty ribbon and give as a gift (or polish off yourself if you prefer!).

Help others get connected and become a Nottinghamshire Digital Champion “One lady I know just wants to be able to Skype and FaceTime her daughter in New Zealand. I think that’s where being a Digital Champion can make a real difference”. Joe, Nottinghamshire Digital Champion Nottinghamshire County Council is calling on local residents to join their growing community of Digital Champions Being able to use the internet is an essential skill in this modern world, however many people are missing out because they’re not online. In fact an estimated 1 in 5 UK adults¹ don’t have ‘basic digital skills’ and in Nottinghamshire alone around 1 in 7 local residents² have never used the internet. In May this year the Council launched the Nottinghamshire Digital Champions Network (NDCN) as part of the Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire Programme. So far over 50 volunteers have got involved to help residents and businesses use the internet. If you are passionate about life online, you can be a Nottinghamshire Digital Champion. You don’t need to be an IT whizz; just have some basic digital skills, a bit of spare time and a willingness to help others. In return you’ll get free training and support, certificates and badges to add to your CV and a great feeling of personal satisfaction! Visit www.digitalchampionsnetwork.com/ nottinghamshire or email ndcn@digitalunite. com

7 Expert Tips For Job Hunting in 2016 Now winter is over, it’s time to look ahead to 2016. This is when we all have the most enthusiasm and motivation to achieve our goals. To help you with your job search in 2016, here are some expert tips to remember: 1. Make use of social media tools like Twitter. Jacob Share at JobMob recommends taking to Twitter to find a new job, starting with personal branding and networking with key contacts in your industry. 2. Refresh and revamp your CV. The first day of spring is the ideal time to give your CV a spruce-up. Key points to remember – keep your CV concise and job-relevant, avoid obvious clichés like ‘team player’ and ‘conscientious worker’ and bring to the fore your unique selling points (USPs). 3. Make a list of your best personal qualities. According to Tanya de Grunwald, founder of GraduateFog.co.uk, we shouldn’t all be solely focused on degrees and qualifications. Personal qualities matter too, such as being really good with people, coming up with innovative ideas or teaching others. 4. Research your chosen industry and talk to key players. If you’re serious about working in a particular industry, you need to know it inside-out, as well as all the latest developments and trends. 5. Practice interviewing. You might feel a little silly, but practising interviewing with friends or family can help you to be prepared and polished when it comes to the real thing. ExpertBeacon.com recommends working on answering and asking questions, body language and eye contact, as well as that allimportant interview wardrobe. 6. Create a system and a strategy for job-hunting. You need to be organised, targeted and systematic to get the best results. 7. Look for volunteering opportunities. This is another top ExpertBeacon.com tip, helping you to get experience and make connections in your chosen field. For advice and help finding your ideal new career in 2016, or for specialist recruitment services for your business, get in touch with the expert team at SOLOS Recruitment Consultants.

Bingham and District Choral Society

The choir has now begun to prepare for our Spring Concert, which we will perform jointly with Southwell Choral Society in Southwell Minster in May. We will be singing the beautiful Fauré Requiem and Poulenc Gloria, and there will be a performance of the Poulenc Organ Concerto. If you would like to sing with us, do come and join us for our weekly rehearsals at Carnarvon School, Nursery Rd, Bingham each Wednesday evening from 7.15 to 9.30. There are no auditions and you will receive lots of support and a warm welcome. For further details, contact Janet Chapman on 0115 9332834. The Hucknall and Linby Brass Band

A beacon is travelling around the country to all L.A.B.B.S. chorus’ and will end its journey on stage in Harrogate at the 2016 National Convention. The ladies held a Bring a Friend Night to receive the Beacon transported from Grimsby and York. Gem passed on the beacon later in January to a chorus in Coventry.

The Radcliffe on Trent Male Voice Choir is busy rehearsing for their Spring tour to Winchester and Hampshire in April, as well as for a prestigious performance in October, at London's Royal Albert Hall as part of the 25th London Welsh Festival of Male Choirs. The Choir has been performing in the Nottinghamshire area, as well as touring the UK and abroad, since 1983, and is always receptive to new joiners to bolster its ranks of 60 or so choristers. The Choir rehearses on Thursday evenings in the Methodist Church, Shelford Road, Radcliffe on Trent, so please come along and see if we can germinate that seed of singing interest, in the gentlemen among you, into full bloom! It is worth mentioning at this point, that the Choir is a registered charity, and a major thread of its being has been the raising of many tens of thousands of pounds for good causes, over the last 33 years. No previous musical experience is necessary. The Choir has a wide and varied repertoire. There is something for everyone. Stamp duty rate changes on buy to lets and second homes-will you be affected? As of April 1st 2016 homeowners will face a higher rate of stamp duty if they have more than one property or buy-to-lets, a proposal that was announced by Chancellor George Osborne in November’s Autumn Statement. This means that from April this year anyone purchasing a second home or buy-to-let will have to pay an extra three percentage points in stamp duty on homes worth up to £125,000, 5% tax on homes valued between £125,001 and £250,000, and 8% tax on homes worth between £250,001 and £925,000. This additional 3 per cent charge applies above the current stamp duty land tax rates. Many parents helping their children onto the property ladder and buying a property jointly with their children will face the higher rates. Traditionally parents did not partly own the property but acted as guarantors on their child’s mortgage instead; however few guarantor mortgages are offered by lenders now. As a result many parents are opting to take out a joint mortgage with their child to boost their affordability, with many banks and building societies requiring parents to put their name on the title deeds as well, as a condition of lending. However, parents still have options of giving money as a deposit or acting as a guarantor for a mortgage without being liable. If you are buying a property jointly with someone, and it is the first purchase for one of you but not for the other, then the government has stated that in this situation the purchase would incur the higher stamp Passionate duty rate because one of about the parties already owns a property and will therefore own two on the day of the transaction. However the government has consulted on this and asked for Open 7 days a week alternative ways to treat people in this situation. Opening hours (Winter)

Mon - Sat 9:00 - 16:30 10:00 - 16:30 If you have exchanged contracts on a property prior toSunthe Autumn Statement on 25th November last year, then the higher tax rate will not apply to you, even if you complete after April 1st 2016. You will face the higher tax rate though if you exchanged after November 25th 2015 and MAP complete after April 1st 2016 as the government says buyers should have been aware of the rise so will be expected to pay it.

Snippets From History by Bob Massey

Its now nearly 10 years since I started writing articles for NG3 magazine. Little did I know when I was asked to put together a history page that so many words would flow from the computer keyboard! Over the past few years people kept asking me when I was going to write a book, then I realised I already had! All the articles that I had written for the magazines could easily form a book. That’s how my book “Snippets from History vol 1 Arnold and Mapperley” was born. With generous help from Ali and the staff of NG magazines the book was published in time for Christmas 2015. It contains some 64 articles, 70 photos and some 35000 words and is available from the NG magazine offices, Five Leaves Bookshop on by Bob Massey Long Row, Nottingham, The Bookcase, Main Street, Lowdham and MSR Newsagents on Front Street at £4.95.

Snippets from History perley Vol. 1 - Arnold & Map

lly A selection of articles origina magazines. published in ng5 and ng3

With my book I have tried not to write a chronological history. As these were originally magazine articles, I have concentrated on stories or tales of the area. Some have followed a theme, such as those about Mapperley Plains, but others are about local characters or events, such as the story of the plague cabins. The reports of out breaks of the plague appear all over history. Places like London and Eyam in 1665 spring to mind, but it was very wide spread and appeared many times over the centuries. In 1603 it struck Nottingham. Seven aldermen and three other people were

appointed that year to guard the town against the spread of the disease. No inhabitants were to attend the Lenton fair that year except in connection with the cattle market and ale houses in the more rundown area of the city were closed. Migration was controlled and people were discouraged from leaving their homes. Under the powers conferred by a new act of parliament, cabins or plague houses were to be erected away from the city to house those who were suffering from the disease. A collection was made by the Lord Mayor, Alderman Richard Morehaghe, over 9 weeks, to raise the necessary funds. One weeks money went missing and the mayor was placed in custody and taken to court. Not a great place to be at the time of the plague. He survived however as he became mayor again in 1610. The cabins were built on Mapperley Hills on a place called Gorsey Close (now Gorsey Road). These cabins were unfortunately inhabited in 1604 and again in 1609 when the plague struck, with the precautions in place from 30th March 1609 to May the following year. Unfortunately very few people recovered from the plague as little was known about the cause, so most victims died. The interesting question is, what happened to the bodies of the victims who had inhabited these cabins. Where were they buried? There was no church anywhere nearby at the time so they must have been buried locally. Stories like these always leave a lot of unanswered questions.

I am researching the history of Mapperley and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail. com or post via NG5 magazine.

e Awakens c r o F e h T : Star Wars e... We’re Hom “Please be good, please be good, please be good.” That was the thought of every man, woman and child in the cinema whilst they waited for The Force Awakens: Star Wars’ to start. And as soon as that iconic and familiar credits scroll accompanied by the flawless Star Wars theme blasted heroically out of those cinema speakers there was no doubt in anyone’s mind. Star Wars is back. Thank you J.J. Abrams. To reveal anything about the plot of this film feels like a spoiler, so I won’t divulge even the smallest of plot synopsis. What I will say however is how good the story is. While it’s definitely not revolutionary – instead more familiar actually - the way it sets up and introduces us to the new generation of Star Wars is fun and so well-constructed that you should simply put your feet up and let the cast and crew of this film take you on a ride. And what a ride it is. The pacing of this film is stupendous, with the exact amount of down time mixed in with high flying action and plot progression. You are never left bored or in an awkward silence. Every scene feels meaningful and never outstays its welcome. Your feet never really get the chance to touch the ground on this high octane intergalactic adventure. After the more than disappointing prequels J.J. Abrams said he was committed to bringing the more real and authentic feeling of the original trilogy back, and that he did in spades. His use of practical effects not only meshed surprisingly well with the CGI of the movie but every new creature, set or vehicle introduced into this beloved universe felt like it had belonged there all along. From the overall design of the movie to John Williams’ excellent score, everything felt classic Star Wars and warmed the hearts of the audience collectively. But J.J. Abrams did not only re-create the feel and style of the original trilogy, he brought along some of his own unique lens flared style. How this movie was shot felt fresh and exciting, with his use of the camera giving the film a fluid and living feeling that made the fast paced scenes of the movie feel even more intense and gave the, at times overwhelming scope that much more wow.

The talented cast rose to the occasion. The performances were delightful to watch and I can’t wait to see them more and get to dive deeper into what makes them all tick. From Daisy Ridley’s incredibly strong and heroic Rey, to John Boyega’s extremely likeable Finn and Harrison Ford’s great return as everyone’s favourite smuggler Han Solo; there was almost no fault to be found amongst this stellar cast. Overall, this film is amazing! From the iconic score, heart racing action, loveable and phenomenally acted characters to the spectacular special effects and design that fit brilliantly into the Star Wars universe and the great story; this film has only left me wanting more from the new characters and circumstances that this film has set up so well. I can’t stop thinking about it and I just want to see it again and again. If you’re a fan of having fun at all you should definitely see this film, like right this second, go on, go! a helping hand Transported with delight thanks to Gedling Voluntary Transport Scheme

Gedling Voluntary Transport is looking for voluntary drivers to take elderly customers to the doctor, to appointments, shopping, to social clubs and help them get out and about. The scheme currently has over 20 regular volunteer drivers on its books, but is keen to expand and take on another 20 drivers to meet the increased demand. The voluntary transport scheme is run by Rushcliffe Community and Voluntary Service (CVS) who has been awarded the Community Transport Association Quality Mark demonstrating their top class transport operations, governance, personnel, health and safety and corporate social responsibility. Rushcliffe CVS has been organising transport for elderly and vulnerable people for over 30 years. Volunteers use their own cars to take passengers out. Most drivers are retired or have at least 2 hours availability between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday. Drivers need to have a car that is in good condition, MOT’d, insured and need to like helping people and talking to them. Drivers all have to undergo DRB (Disclosure and Barring Service) checks as well and providing 2 references. Passengers pay an annual registration fee and 45p/mile to cover the driver’s costs. If you would like to volunteer as a driver, or would like to use the service or know someone who would, call the transport team on 0115 969 9060 or email gedlingtransport@ rushcliffecvs.org.uk to find out more. Enjoy a ‘happiness trial’ with the Oddfellows local friendship society. Nottingham Oddfellows has shared its top five tips for feeling happier in later life. Said Karen Pye-Smith: “We’ve more than 200 years’ experience in helping people to get more out of life and to form lasting friendships, so we thought we’d share a little of what we’ve learnt along the way.” 1. Keep your brain busy. Challenge yourself with crosswords, start a course, catch a talk or play, or write a letter. 2. Help others. Not only does volunteering encourage you to mix socially, it can supercharge self-confidence, self-esteem and life satisfaction. 3. Join a local club or society. More often than not, regular contact with those who share a common interest or hobby will result in meaningful friendships. 4. Get physical. There are so many rewards to regular exercise aside from keeping trim. It reduces many cardiovascular risks, including high blood pressure and heart disease. It also gives your mental health a boost, helping combat stress, anxiety and depression. 5. Seize the day! Society research revealed that one of the benefits to retirement was being able to shop during less busy hours and not having to leave household chores to the weekend. By using time more wisely, you can do more of what you love – including steps one to four! In addition to running social events throughout the year, Nottingham Oddfellows offers volunteering opportunities and care and welfare support to members who may feel lonely, unwell or who are facing other difficulties. For information on how to get involved, call Karen Pye-Smith on 01949 843727 or 07921821866 or email karen.pye-smith@ oddfellows.co.uk.

pets 2016 – could it be the best year yet for local animals? You can help make 2016 the best year yet for local animals through a Nottinghamshire animal charity. Animal Accident Rescue Unit assists injured and at-risk stray and abandoned animals and wildlife by providing emergency transport to a vet, plus covering medical treatment costs – like Archie (pictured). The charity strives to give lifelong commitment to those in its care: all animals are placed in foster care until adopted or, in the case of birds, released back into the wild. Completely volunteer-led and donationfunded, this small charity constantly is in urgent need of funds and support – and 2016 is no different. With no base to maintain, (all animals are fostered in volunteers’ homes), nor paid staff, donations go directly to the animals – where they are most needed such as: • £10 helps towards transporting a dog to a vet • £40 pays towards a fostered cat’s food • £100 contributes to a bird’s veterinary care Why not join as a member starting from just £5 annually? For details on benefits for you and the animals relying – often on their lives - on the charity, visit www.animalaccident. org.uk/donate. Online donations are most welcome, or by cheque payable to ‘Animal Accident Rescue Unit’ and posted to P.O. Box 5414, Burton Joyce, Nottingham NG14 5DT. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should call, and leave a detailed message if necessary for the charity’s voluntary telephone operators at 0115-9321555. For more information, plus details on volunteering, fostering or to see the lovely animals currently waiting for homes visit www.animalaccident.org.uk

Keep Your Doors Locked... The spring arriving can mean only one thing; sheds and garages and doors are unlocked. Nottinghamshire Police reminds you to enhance the security in your homes and gardens. First of all, keep doors locked and when you are working in the garden or on your car close your shed or garage door. Also, check that your home insurance extends to the belongings you keep in your outbuildings. Also, remember to lock your front and back doors if you are away from home. It sounds like basic common sense, but some people forget to do this when going out especially in a rush. Locking your doors will take a matter of minutes and will give you peace of mind whilst away. It may sound silly but also lock your doors when you are home and in the garden, and don’t leave windows open in unattended rooms. Would you notice if someone snatched your mobile phone through an open window or hopped in and grabbed your laptop from the coffee table? Please be vigilant.

knock at your door. Do you know who is calling before you open it? Unfortunately, there are some dishonest people in this world. Always ask for identification and verify this by checking it against the telephone directory and calling the company they claim to work for. If you have any doubts about them, do not let them into your home. If they are genuine they will be more than willing to rearrange, by which time you can check they are who they claim to be, and ensure there is someone with you when they next call. We want you to be happy and safe in the warmer weather. Report anything suspicious to us on 101.

Finally, take a moment to consider the process you go through when answering a Special Constabulary Recruitment - Are you interested in becoming a Special Constable? To find out more about our pre-recruitment awareness events please contact us on 101 ext: 800 2429 or visit www.nottinghamshire.police.uk and follow the Specials link
