Transport scheme puts people on the road to employment The job prospects of more than 100 people got a kick start last year thanks to the Nottinghamshire County Council funded Wheels to Work scheme. Wheels to Work provides a six month loan of a moped or helps fund other transport solutions for people who have been offered a job but have no other way of getting to and from their place of work or training. The moped loan scheme costs just £15 per week and includes: • A six month moped loan • Moped tax, insurance and breakdown cover • Servicing and maintenance of the moped • Protective clothing (including helmet) and heavy duty lock for your moped • Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) To qualify, users of the scheme need to be 16 or over, live in Nottinghamshire, have a provisional (or full) driving licence, been offered a job for a minimum of 16 hours per week and have no other reasonable means of getting to their place of work.

A Message From Temporary Inspector Simon Allardice... Firstly I would like to introduce myself as the new Neighbourhood Policing Inspector for the NG3 area, covering St Ann’s, Sneinton and Mapperley. I’ve spent the majority of my policing career in the area, having started here as a response officer in 2004, and it’s great to come back as an Inspector to continue the excellent work the team has done in reducing crime and antisocial behaviour. I know much of this success has been achieved through excellent partnership working, which is focused on tackling the issues that matter most to you. I want to ensure this outstanding work continues to deliver the best possible service to everyone who lives, works or visits. I would encourage you to get in touch and let us know what matters most to you. You can do this by going to our website www.nottinghamshire.police. uk and visiting the ‘Your Local Police’ section. Feedback from the community has helped us set new policing priorities, which focus on tackling antisocial behaviour and drug use issues in the local area. We drug

Neighbourhood Support Team recently had a good result when a local man was jailed for growing cannabis at his property. It was quite a surprise when officers discovered that Adrian James, 43, of Hungerhill Road, St Ann’s, had used a JCB to bury a freight shipping container in his garden in order to grow drugs. He was arrested in October 2011, after officers conducted a drugs warrant at his home. We found cannabis plants in one room in the house and then followed a tunnel that had been dug out from the house into the garden, where we discovered additional cannabis plants inside a huge metal shipping trailer. Hydroponics equipment with timer switches and an automatic watering system were also in place. Up to £86,000 worth of cannabis was seized from the house and container. Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court on 29 January, Adrian James pleaded guilty to production of cannabis at a commercial level, and was sentenced to three years in prison. A confiscation order under the Proceeds of Crime Act is also going through court to seize money and assets that James is likely to have acquired through criminal activity.

Exciting research project for families in Nottingham Do you have a child aged 2 years 9 months to 4 years 6 months?
.
Does your child constantly move around, fidget and wriggle, not listen to you or talk too much? Is this behaviour difficult for you to manage at home during meal and play times or watching TV, and when you are out and about, shopping, or visiting? Researchers from the University of Nottingham are inviting local families to take part in an innovative research project with the chance to participate in parenting programmes designed to help you manage your child’s behaviour and improve family life. This will take just 1 to 2 hours each week for a period of 12 weeks.
Our next parenting programmes will begin in April 2013 To find out more and take part in a short interview to see if your family might benefit from participating, contact 07881 280369 or email Elvira.Perez@nottingham.ac.uk

TEN TOP TIPS FOR PARENTS! It’s the start of a new year and for those with children in Year 9 (or year 8 at some schools) there begins the nail biting process of choosing the subject options that they will see through to their GCSEs or equivalent in Year 11.
Nottingham Centre (National Trust)
Spring Programme 2013
So the team at Arnold Hill Academy in Nottinghamshire have put together their top tips for parents to help them support their children at this important stage of their school career.
1. Check out which subjects your child really enjoys. Enthusiasm is a powerful motivator. 2. Take a look at your child’s progress. Doing well in a subject is a sign that your child is quite happy to meet the challenges of further study in that area. 3. Encourage your child to talk to their teachers or go for a chat yourself. They can give advice on what the course entails and whether it suits your child’s particular talents 4. But make sure that your child is not planning to choose a course based on their current subject teacher. 5.The same goes for friends’ choices. Keep an eye on decisions based upon friends’ options choices and influence. 6. Take a close look together at how the course is structured. Look at the balance of exams and assessment for each course and check that this suits how your child works best. 7. In fact balance is a good theme to follow. Your child’s choices will ideally represent a good variety of subjects that will keep their options wide open for the future. 8. If your child has ideas about what they might want to do as a career, then take a look at which subjects will best support them in this endeavour – it all helps! 9. Beware of falling into the pushy parent trap! Be open-minded about the paths your children will walk and embrace their talents! 10. Talk to the school about how they keep an eye on your kids as they start this new journey.

Could you picture someone else in your family? A new campaign was launched in January to recruit an army of local carers to support adults who need help to live independently.
Volunteers Needed in Your Community
Shared Lives, which is being run by the County Council, aims to recruit carers from across the county to help support people with physical or learning disabilities, older people or mental health needs. All carers will receive training and ongoing support and will be paid depending on the needs of the person or people they care for. Shared Lives is looking for carers who can provide a range of support: • Long term accommodation and support: people who have room in their home and are willing to have someone to live as part of their family for some time. This may be months or years.
My sight Nottinghamshire, are looking for people who are: great listeners, friendly and committed to join our Volunteer Home Visiting Team. My sight Home Visitors help to support visually impaired people who live in your community by visiting them once a week for short walks, reading mail or just a cup of tea and a chat. Not only will this be an opportunity for you to help reduce the social isolation that can affect many visually impaired people, but you will also get the chance to meet new people, help your community and use your own people skills. If you’re interested in becoming a Home Visitor or if you would like any more information, then please contact us on: 0115 9706806.

• Short breaks: people who can offer a short break for someone while the people who normally support them are having a holiday or have to be away. • Regular short-term support: people who can offer support in the day to promote independence and help people become part of their community. Councillor Kevin Rostance, Chair of the Adult Social Care and Health Committee, said: “We are looking for caring people who have some time and space in their lives to help an adult. You may be a retired person who has room in your home; a parent who has spare time in the day or someone who works in the week, but has evenings or weekends free. “Shared Lives is a vital scheme which will help older or disabled people to experience ordinary life with real relationships. Please get in touch if you think you can help.” Anyone who is interested in becoming a Shared Lives carer can visit www.nottinghamshire. gov.uk/sharedlives, email: sharedlives@ nottscc.gov.uk or phone 0300 500 80 80.

Access Group seeks new members The Gedling Access Group (GAG), a charitable organisation that seeks to improve life for disabled people in Gedling, is seeking new members. GAG aims to ensure that buildings and services across the borough are accessible to everyone who visits, lives and works there. The group has been around for the last 20 years and during that time has initiated many projects, including the creation of a sensory garden in Arnot Hill Park in Arnold. It’s also promoted making shops and offices more accessible in its booklet Getting about in Gedling, and has established a Shopmobility scheme in Arnold town centre that is managed and staffed entirely by volunteers. .
More recently, GAG has begun to review the accessibility of public toilets in the Borough and has begun to gather information abou accessible and flexible local transpor schemes. The group is now seeking new members who have experience of disability themselves, o who are carers or family members of someone with a disability. GAG meets every six weeks on Wednesdays from 3pm until 4.30pm at the Civic Centre in Arnold, and help with transpor can be provided where necessary. St Ann's and Sneinton Football Club in the Community
When & Where? Tuesdays - 5.00-6.30pm @ Greenwood Academy School Sports Site & Thursdays - 4.30 - 6pm @ Mapperley Sports Village 2013 marks the start of an exciting new era for football in the St Ann's and Sneinton area. St Ann's and Sneinton Football Club is the first and only junior football club covering both of these areas and we currently run teams at Under 10 and Under 14 ages. We have recently been building and strengthening partnerships both locally and nationally to work towards our goal - to enable every child in the area to have the opportunity to get involved in football with their local club. Working closely with EPIC Partners, St Ann's and Sneinton Football Club will be holding open football development sessions every Tuesday and Thursday. This will give children in the area the opportunity to work with some of the best youth sports coaches
in Nottingham. The development sessions will take place at the Greenwood Road and Ransom Road sites of Nottingham Academy, who have kindly offered their continuing strong support by allowing the Football Club free use of some of the best sports facilities in the region. 'One day I would love to see one of the children who has played at our club on Match of the Day, or even playing in a World Cup Final! We know that we can give all children in the area the opportunity to enjoy playing football, at whatever level, and that for me, is most important of all.' Business Spotlight.... Your name: Dave How did you first get into your line of work? I used to be a milkman but trade fell off because of the supermarkets. I love being out and about and I really wanted to be my own boss so I went along to a franchise event and bought into a pet food delivery business. However in 1999 I decided I could do better being completely my own boss and gave up the franchise to run Door to Paw. How did you get to where you are now? I have gradually built up the business over the last 13 years through sheer hard work and determination. We now have our own label pet food and a massive regular customer base. My beautiful dog, Bran, accompanies me everyday which is great. He was a rescue dog and we have now had him nearly 7 years. How have you found advertising in ng magazines? I have advertised on and off with ng magazines over the last 7 years and have always found the girls very helpful and the adverts generate me plenty of new business. What’s the most embarrassing moment you’ve had whilst at work? Well once I was delivering some cat food and a large lady came to the door wearing nothing but a dressing gown and a smile! The dressing gown was not done up properly and the lady was wearing nothing but her birthday suit underneath......I made a rapid exit I can tell you!!! It was like something off a Carry On film. What did you want to be when you were growing up and would you still like to be that now? I always wanted to be a pilot when growing up - to be honest I still wouldn’t mind learning to fly now and obtaining my pilots licence. We will see. What’s your signature dish and what’s the recipe? Embarassingly it would have to be beans on toast and if I was trying to be very exotic I would add a fried egg to the top....

Help in paying for treatment for a young cat called Belle, who has severe injuries, is being sought by a Nottinghamshire charity. Belle was found straying in Nottingham before being taken to a vet practice. Experts believe her injuries are consistent with having had boiling water poured on her – possibly deliberately – thus severely damaging her skin. The vet practice called local animal charity, Animal Accident Rescue Unit (AARU), which has agreed to pay for five month old Belle's treatment and to find her a home. The treatment costs are already mounting to hundreds of pounds. With a long road of treatment ahead of bathing, painkillers and antibiotics, AARU is appealing to the local community to help. Robina Varley from the charity explains: ‘Despite her injuries Belle’s doing well and is an affectionate and trusting cat. Her wounds are open and sore so she’s being bathed daily, she’s on constant pain relief but coping well. We’re committed to providing whatever treatment and care she needs.’ Belle is being fostered locally but will eventually need a new home. If you want to help this poor cat, please visit AARU's website at www.animalaccident.org.uk, email: admin@aaru.org.uk or call 0115 931 4274 on how to donate and to find out about rehoming. All other calls to the charity must be made using its Lifeline number 0115 932 1555.

Changes to Legal Aid From the 1 April 2013, save in very exceptional circumstances, people wanting to access legal aid for separation, divorce, dissolution of a civil partnership, private children matters (e.g. residence & contact) and/or financial matters will need to show evidence that they have suffered or are at risk of suffering domestic violence. These changes to the legal aid scheme will impact on those being abused today. Anyone wanting to obtain legal aid will first have to obtain evidence of domestic violence which can include: • • • • • •
• •
• •
an unspent conviction for a domestic violence offence a caution for a domestic violence offence given in the preceding 2 years ongoing criminal proceedings for a domestic violence offence a current injunction order or one granted in the preceding 2 years an undertaking given to the Court in place of an injunction order within a family relationship in the last 2 years but excluding cross undertakings where there has been a multi-agency risk assessment conference a letter from the chair confirming there is a high risk of domestic violence and in the preceding 2 years a plan has been put in place to protect the person from domestic violence a copy of a finding of fact made in UK court proceedings in the preceding 2 years that there has been domestic violence giving rise to a risk of harm a letter or a report from a health professional confirming an examination in the last 2 years showing injuries or a condition consistent with those of a person suffering domestic violence and having no reason to believe that the injuries or condition were not caused by domestic violence a letter from Social Services confirming that in the preceding 2 years a person was assessed as being, or at risk of being, a victim of domestic violence .a letter or report from a UK domestic violence support organisation confirming that in the preceding 2 years a person was admitted for a period of 24 hours or more to a refuge, the date of admission and leaving the refuge and that admission arose as a result of domestic violence
Legal aid will not be available to assist people in gathering together this information so people need to be aware of what they will have to show to obtain legal aid from the 1 April. We remain committed to providing legal aid services and are happy to deal with any queries concerning eligibility. For those who are no longer eligible for legal aid we offer various fixed fee packages. Legal aid will continue to be available to help people deal with care proceedings and related matters. If you require any further information on these changes or family law matters generally please contact Paul Cobb on 0800 096 0998

Spring into Action
–
don’t let Moss take over your lawn The record setting wet and inclement weather of 2012 has taken its toll on lawns throughout Britain, including those in Nottingham East region. From excessive moisture to compacted soil, many lawns are in need of attention. Spring is the most important time of the year to take care of your lawn. Neglecting to treat your lawn during the spring can cause issues for the rest of the year. This advice is particularly important following the recent wet weather. As a result of the excessive rain, lawns will have become saturated creating a perfect breeding ground for moss. Mosses are resilient and versatile non flowering plants that are, for many, the worst of all lawn problems. Left unchecked, moss will increase, reducing the ability of the grass to thrive and will eventually ‘choke’ out the grass completely. To successfully remove a moss problem, it is important to identify the primary cause and remove it or reduce its impact. Not only can excessive moisture be a cause of moss, there could also be an underlying issue with your lawn. Additional causes of moss can include excessive thatch, the grass being left to grow too long during winter, poor drainage, shade and compacted soil due to heavy use. But do not worry there is a solution; moss can be combatted. The most effective method, while providing the best value for money, is to contact your local lawn care expert, who has the experience, techniques and tools to tackle the moss quickly and effectively. Greensleeves, the national lawn treatment company, has a programme designed to maximise the effort against moss and reduce its impact as much as possible. The treatment programme begins with an on-site evaluation of the turf and current moss conditions. Depending on the severity of current moss, your local Greensleeves lawn care expert will recommend a treatment plan to bring your lawn back to life. Greensleeves will treat the moss problem with their range of specially formulated products and professional equipment. They will not only
act to combat the moss but will also apply a specialist lawn feed which will encourage the turf to thrive. If required, they will then remove the dead moss from the lawn by scarification. Scarifying is a process which involves a mechanical raking of the lawn using a specialist machine which has sharp tungsten blades that rotate at high speed and cut into the turf in a vertical manner. The process of scarification removes the moss along with any excess thatch from a lawn giving the grass plants the opportunity and space required to grow. This will help the turf to withstand any future moss invasion. Additionally, your lawn can at this stage be over seeded if required to fill in any bare patches left by removing the moss. Re-seeding involves the scattering of new lawn see over your existing lawn to help fill damaged or thinned areas. Greensleeves will also assess your lawn to establish whether it will benefit from being aerated. Hollow Tine aeration can dramatically improve the condition of the soil and therefore has a direct impact on the health of a lawn. The process involves a professional aeration machine which removes plugs from the soil at intervals to reduce compaction and therefore improve the drainage and soil conditions; again helping the grass to flourish and ensuring adequate drainage to reduce the moist conditions in which moss thrives. It is important to remember that no matter what condition your lawn is currently in with a little help from the professionals it can be transformed. With their expert knowledge and professional range of equipment and treatment plans, Greensleeves is the lawn care company that you really can rely on. For further information or to book a Free, no obligation quotation please contact your local Greensleeves lawn treatment expert; John Sansum on 01159 280687 or visit www.greensleeves-uk.com.

A Mill 1878 by Bob Massey For those of you that are expecting an article about windmills prepare to be disappointed. The Mill in this case is a 19th century expression for a bare knuckle boxing match. The one in question took place in March 1878 at Mapperley. At 7am on 21st March 1878 a police officer from Nottingham City Force B division was walking his beat when he noticed a crowd moving up Blue Bell Hill in the direction of Mapperley. Being of a suspicious mind, and due to the early hour, the officer guessed the crowd were all bent on some sort of mischief and he decided to investigate. He followed the crowd at a discreet distance until they arrived at Mapperley Plains. Here he found the reason for the Nottingham exodus. A tent and ring had been erected on waste ground and was laid out for a boxing match that was about to commence. Prize fighting was illegal at the time as it was considered to present a riotous and unlawful assembly. Past experience had taught the authorities that matches of this type could, and usually did, turn to arguments and violence with as much fighting in the crowd as in the ring. The officer called for reinforcements and when further officers of B division arrived they told the crowd to move on. This they did which with out argument or trouble. However they only moved a few yards along the road over the county boundry
and out of the city limits and so out of the jurisdiction of the city police. Having set up the ring again, with the police watching but helpless to act, the fight then started. This contest was being fought between Jemmy Brown also known as “Tom the Fiddler” and Johnny Gorse, both residents of Narrow Marsh in Nottingham. The name of the first combatant at least suggested that this was not being conducted by the most honest members of this notorious community. The stake was set at £2 per side and betting on both fighters was very heavy. As it was a Sunday morning, several additional laws were being broken. The constabulary could not stand by and watch this disregard of their authority. They therefore dispatched a runner to Arnold to call out the county force on whose “manor” the fight was now taking place. By the time the new force had arrived several rounds had been fought but a winner had yet to be decided. The county police stopped the fight and ended the event but surprisingly no arrests were made. The crowd must have been remarkably well behaved especially as many would have lost money as a result of the police action. There are no records of a re-match so perhaps we shall never know who came out on top but with money and reputations at stake it is unlikelty that this was the last contest of Gorse and Brown.
I am researching the history of the area and would be pleased to hear from any one with details of the people and places now long gone. Email:bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG3

In order to take part in the trek I have to raise £2450 for the charity. Child Reach International is a grassroots charity that has three main aims: to improve children’s health, education and human rights and protection. In 2010, they increased access to education for 40,694 more children, 23,330 more got health care and 4,868 more were kept safe. Child Reach International uses some of the money raised to fund the trip but at least 50% goes directly into the charity. To help support me and the charity donations can be made at: https://mydonate.bt.com/ fundraisers/hayleypykett or a £3 donation can be made by texting: UNLOCK 109544 to 70007.
