Dear Readers

contents

Finally the days are getting longer and we can start looking forward to Spring. Daffodils, cute little lambs and Easter eggs... we had a giggle at Dom Murray’s article on the whole Easter chocolate conundrum. Struggling for ideas for dinner? Just grab a pack of sausages and pick one of the recipes in this edition - they’re all delicious. Among the competitions this month we have family passes to West Midlands Safari Park and Red Kangaroo, a £100 voucher for a meal at Masala Junction and some fantastic theatre tickets up for grabs. Good Luck!

Give Your Property KERB APPEAL

Are you looking to transform the front of your house with an attractive new driveway?

I

f so, then a resin drive is well-worth considering. Resin bound surfacing is a porous paving material made from a mixture of aggregate stones and resin. It combines the best attributes of other surfaces – the appearance of loose gravel, the strength of concrete and the flexibility of tarmac – whilst being easier to maintain than all three! It’s environmentally friendly too – unlike bonded systems, a resin bound surface allows water to drain through just as Mother Nature intended, so you can minimise the impact on the environment and avoid puddles at the same time. Resin bound surfacing comes in a choice of over 40 unique colours and is suitable for all types of properties and projects including driveways, patios, paths, terraces and roof gardens.

The benefits of a resin driveway

Slip resistant surface Adds value to your property No planning permission required Suitable for listed buildings, urban or rural properties ✔ Completely porous, so no puddles or floods ✔ Weed adverse materials ✔ Strong and durable so it will outlast other driveway options ✔ ✔ ✔ ✔

Sarah Beeny, property developer and TV presenter, is a big fan of resin drives. “Resin is definitely the perfect drive finish,” she says. “It’s so practical — being totally porous it drains brilliantly and doesn’t create puddles. It’s lovely to walk on, has a long-lasting durable finish and is available in an amazing range of colours.” “It’s a bit like a little black dress. You can dress it up glitzy glam if you want a real Hollywood look, or it can blend perfectly with a natural rural setting.” She recommends Resindrives.co.uk for their professional service and high-quality work on her driveway: “They arrived when they said they would, gave us a clear time schedule for the work and were finished early”, she says. “All the fitters were polite and charming and properly cleaned up after themselves. They did a beautiful job and were complete perfectionists.” Resindrives.co.uk have been installing resin driveways successfully since 2007. In it for the bunny! Easter. Depending when you’re reading this it’s either coming, happening, or has just gone. Whichever way you look at it, it started too early, has more build up than is strictly necessary, and is gone before you know it. I say this from a perspective of someone who isn’t religious, as I do understand that from a Christian perspective Easter is about much more than a day filled with chocolate eggs. And you could make a very good case for why so much of the celebration of this event is continued when a large amount of people who observe it have no religious interest in the event itself. But I digress (that seems far too serious a topic for this column). Whilst not being a follower of any religious group, I did grow up in a very religious household. So in that respect it annoys me when people say things like ‘what have chocolate eggs got to do with Easter’? In this day and age a Google search will answer that for you but bear with me. The egg has roots in paganism as a symbol of new life, and later on it’s believed that Christianity used it as a symbol of the resurrection of Jesus himself. Nowadays it’s used as a symbol by those evil, capitalist confectionery companies to prize our hard earned money from our wallets. Hang on, let’s get back on track! As noted by the biography opposite, I have children. Like all parents know, this means I have to observe all major festivals whether they personally impact me in any way or not. And Easter is no exception. I first noticed something was up when I watched a Cadbury’s Creme Egg advert in January. January! Give me a break. I still hadn’t spent my Christmas gift vouchers and now I’m meant to be preparing for Easter. I was so angry I decided to binge-eat Creme Eggs out of season as a protest. But the children, they’re clever. Their Christmas Lego sets are only just finished and they’re already lining up a list of chocolate treats they want from the family.

And they’re not shy about asking everyone. I think they have late night planning sessions under cover of darkness to establish which grandparent gets them what egg. I doubt D-Day was as well organised as my kids operational plan for total chocolate overload. Fortunately we know our kids pretty well (at least I think we do, sometimes they surprise the hell out of us) so we usually manage to keep a lid on eggmageddon. There’s not often been an Easter when we’ve had an overflow of sweets, normally it’s a sane amount. But it’s still more chocolate than I would consume in a matter of months. And not just the big eggs. There’s chocolate coins, mini eggs, sweet selections, Creme Eggs, Lindt bunnies, it never ends! So we let the kids eat some, give them their fill in the hope that it’ll sate the inhuman demand for constant chocolate. And then we hide them. That’s right, we hide our kids chocolate. Don’t judge us, we don’t do it out of cruelty. Nor is it a plan to eat all of the chocolate for ourselves. But there’s a point where no child needs to eat that much chocolate. So we make a big deal of breaking some of the eggs down into little bowls so the kids can have a little something most days, and we make the rest disappear. And here’s a tip for new parents: it also means they can’t tell when you sneak a bit for yourself when no-one’s looking (ie. at midnight when you have convinced yourself that you need a reward for the brisk walk you took to the shops earlier). But I don’t want to appear overly grumpy! Chance would be a fine thing, right? If you want to drop me a line to let me know how your Easter shapes up I’ll be here, eating my bodyweight in my children’s Easter eggs!

Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

kids New Park And Play Area Gets The Green Light

A new £120,000 park and play area will be built on Haywood Road, Mapperley after funding was secured by Gedling Borough Council and The Haywood Road Community Association from WREN, a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community, conservation and heritage projects from funds donated by waste and resource management company FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund. WREN confirmed this week that funding of £70,000 has been awarded towards the park and the council will provide a further £50,000. Earlier this year, the council announced that Haywood Road Community Centre and its bowling green, which was proposed to be sold to housing developers, would be saved by the council after listening to the concerns of hundreds of residents about its potential closure. Plans for the park were approved in September and include a rope pyramid, seesaws, slide, roundabout, balance beams, swings, picnic tables, benches and a table tennis area. The park is expected to open by Easter 2019. Paul Drury, Treasurer of Haywood Road Community Association said; “Everyone is absolutely delighted, so many people in our community came together, first to save Haywood Road community centre from closure, then to campaign to stop the Green being sold to developers and now we have managed to secure funding to turn it into a wonderful park. Thank you to GBC for listening to the people of Mapperley and doing the right thing.”

Hollies Day Nurseries’ Do Battle With Plastic

A chain of children’s day nurseries in Nottingham enlisted the help of Robin Hood to do battle with plastic over Christmas. Drew and Becky Pike who own Hollies Day Nurseries, tasked their managers to come up with environmentally-friendly ways to transform their buildings into Winter Wonderlands with an emphasis on using natural and recycled materials. Tim Pollard, who plays Nottingham’s official Robin Hood and Lisa Douglas, who runs Things To Do in Nottinghamshire, visited the nurseries in West Bridgford, Sherwood, Mapperley and Arnold to judge the results and choose an overall winner. After much deliberation, Arnold was announced as the winner and received £1,000 to spend on resources at the nursery. The pre-school children at Arnold were delighted to meet Robin Hood and made bows made out of sticks and string to welcome him to their nursery. “It’s so important that we encourage our children to consider recycling and how plastic affects the environment in the long-term” added Becky Pike, “so we wanted the staff to think outside the box and be more innovative with their decorations this year, rather than just popping to the shop and buying them. We are very proud of the efforts and fantastic creativity that has been shown by everyone and we will be encouraging the nurseries to continue with this idea in the future”.

My only ask was 100% commitment and anything is possible.

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO START: GAIL’S JOURNEY How often or how many times have you heard the phrase “I’m too old”, or maybe “you need to slow down a little”? I’d like you to meet Gail (pictured). Gail has worked in the public sector for, let’s say, a while. Gail reached out to me as she had heard I’m not afraid of a challenge, so we connected and had a very in-depth conversation about her request. Want to know what Gail asked? “Andy, I am retiring in a few weeks and I want to set myself a personal goal. Not to be all showy and make it all about me, but to set a standard bar high and commit myself to this goal.” “My goal is to step onto a stage within a physique/ bodybuilding competition. Not to be placed first but to say I did this, and I got here.” You can imagine my eyes! I LIVE for moments like these. If you’ve followed me for a while on social media, you’ll know I like to challenge things that people say can’t be done. Gail had been told this, and I wasn’t going to sit there and let her believe it. In the past Gail has been active, and has been into some sort of general fitness routine. She has also been dieting for much of her life. Her first question was, “Is my goal possible?”

Email: info@strengthyphysique.co.uk Website: www.strengthphysique.co.uk

Gail has struggled with her relationship with food for most of her life. Always on a low-calorie diet of 1000 – 1200 calories per day accompanied by lots of exercise to try keep weight gain away. When I explained we would need to increase weight while we programme for muscle gain, I wasn’t sure how this would impact mentally with Gail. Safe to say, we currently have Gail on 2500 calories a day, training six days per week with full nutrition guidance and what a result this is producing! The challenge of overcoming a poor relationship with food is long gone. Gail is consuming twice the number of GOOD calories in a day than she previously did and weight has only been increasing 0.5kg over a few months at a time with a total of nearly 4kg gained. Safe to say Gail’s goal to compete in 2020 is right on track and I am sure you will agree she looks fabulous. I’d like to leave you with a few things to think about going into this year: 1. You are never too old to make a positive shift in life. 2. Exercise only benefits longevity of life when done correctly. 3. Check in with yourself and ask how your relationship with food and dieting is in general. 4. Asking for help doesn’t mean you aren’t capable, it is probably the most sensible thing you could do. Set yourself a goal like Gail did and commit to it 100%. We all deserve the best of ourselves and it is only ourselves that can deliver that result. Enjoy YOUR journey

The concert reflects NYO’s high standards: in addition to the Tchaikovsky, Senior orchestra will perform Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite; Intermediate and Training orchestras will play music from The Planets and Swan Lake. Before the concert, and in the interval, the Jazz Orchestra will perform near the buffet bar. This youthful, exuberant Russian Gala concert starts at 7pm. HEALTH WALKS?

WHAT’S IN THEM FOR ME?

Since starting in 2010, the Nottinghamshire Guided Walks Partnership has featured Health Walks in their booklet as a highly beneficial social means of regaining fitness after injury, illness or hospital operation. Most of the County’s boroughs, plus organisations like Age UK and the National Trust have trained leaders to escort these groups for short distances - usually one to three miles. Despite lack of adequate funding, the numbers of people joining these free walks are growing steadily, enjoying not only improving fitness but the friendly social contact with other similar individuals. It’s win - win for everyone! healthier. David (aged 72), a former biologist, knows the value of this gentle exercise. It has reduced his arthritis pains, but admits that he loves the gossipy social side of the walking even more. It was clear from Ken’s sunny smile that he enjoys the social chatter, but admits that he has felt the benefit of walking regularly for two years. ‘I can walk uphill and talk at the same time now’ he quips. Partnership members recently accompanied four of these regular groups, to record some of their opinions. Keith Wallace: “I set up ‘On Your Doorstep’ walks around Mansfield to encourage people to take regular exercise and provide a place where they could socialise. I had a heart attack at 36 and two heart procedures for arrhythmia. Walking helped me get fitter and establish a routine of regular exercise. My problems had led to depression, with feelings of loneliness and low self-esteem that often accompany it. So walking in a group has helped me recover and keep more positive. I thought that if it could do that for me, maybe it could work for others. “Since we started three years ago, we have moved from one walk per fortnight to seven per week. Over 120 people come on at least one of our walks every week. One man came because he was fed up of his daughter nagging him to get out of the house. He expected his first walk to kill him, but he celebrated his 90th birthday last year and invited all his new friends to the party.” This walk started in Newstead village. Keith and his regulars also feature on the front cover of this year’s Guided Walks booklet. Gedling Country Park: This group meets Mondays and Wednesdays, at the Spring Lane car park. Lorna, with a big smile, says she has been walking for over a year with the two groups. Loves the social chat as well as feeling much

30

Rushcliffe Country Park: This group meets at the Education Centre on Wednesdays, but splits into smaller parties shortly after leaving it. Duncan Ritchie led the slightly larger party for about 2 miles around this very attractive park. Out in the lead, Susan was very positive. “Lovely morning today—I’m enjoying the exercise and meeting other people - discussing all sorts of things. We’re out in all weathers—it’s better than the gym!” Walking beside her, Andy agreed. “I just like being out in the fresh air—and I guess it’s doing me good!” At the end, enjoying the lakeside view, Brenda brightly summed it up. “Well, when you live alone, it’s lovely to get out with a cheerful group like ours.” Woodthorpe Grange Park: This group walks 1½ to 2 miles in the park but meets first every Monday morning at the Sherwood Community Centre, promoted by Age UK. Rubina’s view was that “Fresh air, exercise, meeting people and just doing something for me makes me fitter.” Vicky felt much the same - “a chance to socialise and get me out of the house, and to enjoy things in general.” David revealed a little more. “I’m here because I am a Type 2 diabetic and was recommended to exercise more, so I’ve been coming on these weekly walks. I quite enjoy it. They’re nice people and it’s a good steady walk.” Full details of health walks appear in the Notts Guided Walks booklet, available free now in our libraries and information centres. Know anyone they would help?

free time A Stepping Stone To The Bigger Clubs Gedling Southbank, as a grassroots club, takes pride as a stepping stone for younger players to move on to the local professional clubs. Ian Jacks our GSB United U14 coach also scouts for Nottingham Forest age 7 – 13 Academy. Nine players from his team have represented Nottingham Forest Development Squad against other clubs this season. Seven of these players have been with Gedling Southbank since they were 6/7 years old! Alex Tranter pictured left, aged 9 who was with GSB Tigers U9’s coached by Chris Murdock from aged 5, has recently signed for Notts County, and Dean Gardner pictured right, signed for Derby after only 1 year playing for GSB Athletic U10’s and winning the Div 1 U10 title. And three of the very successful GSB Girls U12 from last season, Sommer Button, Jess Ellis & Fleur Jaimes, have also signed on for Notts County this season. The commitment from the coaching staff and support from team sponsor GDRT undoubtedly helped the girls get to where they are now and they loved their time at GSB and made great friends! Many players have moved on to higher standard clubs over the years and the above players are just a few examples of recent movements. Grassroots clubs should always help players to fulfil their potential and leave the door open to players to return if things don’t work out and they want to return For any details about the club please follow the links below. www.gedlingsouthbankfc.co.uk/club-contact facebook.com/Gedling Southbank FC

Fantastic Cats Launched In Nottingham

On 7th April, Ben Robson (pictured above with Ollie), a local young man who was diagnosed with autism at the age of three, will release his first illustrated story. With great determination and support from family and friends, Ben has overcome the challenges of his condition and turned himself into a productive writer and artist. ‘Kitty Realms’ is a fantastic story that transfers his real-life cats into a magical realm where they have to brave many adversities. His heroes live in the mystical kingdom of Alvadaar which is threatened by an evil sorcerer. Written and illustrated in a child friendly style, Ben has produced a magical adventure for all ages. This first story will be available as hard cover on the day of launch and as paperback or eBook via the online publisher. The book launch event will be held at the Espresso Gallery on Woodborough Road on Sunday 7th April, from 4pm. The gallery will also be showing a selection of Ben’s many other drawings. Ben is constantly writing more stories. He has already completed his next writing project which is currently being edited.

Local Author & Goalkeeper Release New Book

Local author Jonathan Nicholas has worked with goalkeeper Steve Cherry to produce Steve’s exciting new autobiography, ‘Cherry Picking – Life between the Sticks’. Jonathan says: ‘We worked very closely together throughout 2018 to produce an honest and often hilarious account of Steve’s thirty year footballing career. We both had a great time writing it and really hope it will be an interesting read, not just for football fans but readers of more general autobiography.’ Steve Cherry was born in Calverton and was spotted by a Derby County scout at the age of fifteen. He played at Derby County for nine years and was capped for England Youth under Brian Clough several times until moving to Walsall FC, Plymouth Argyle and then Chesterfield before the boyhood club of his dreams Notts County. Steve was at Notts County from 1989 – 1995 in the glory days under Neil Warnock, winning two consecutive Wembley finals and promotion to the First Division. How was this done? What happened behind the scenes at Notts? ‘Cherry Picking’ is available on Amazon.

‘Kitty Realms’ will be dedicated to his mother, who sadly passed away in late 2017.

TAROSCOPES Air signs- Libra, Aquarius, Gemini

Earth signs- Capricorn, Virgo, Taurus

(Seven of Cups, Nine of Swords, Strength)

(The Hermit, Ace of Wands, Eight of Swords)

Use your imagination Your imagination is one of your greatest strengths and it can prove its worth right now by helping you visualise a way forward. You are worrying and analysing rather than dreaming and imagining- it’s time to do more of the latter and let your flights of fancy actually show the path you must take.

Deep down, you know what to do It’s time to turn the page and make some lasting changes which change the story altogether! Old habits and behaviours which no longer serve you well need to go, making room for fresh energy, people and activities which bring joy and prosperity. The answers and ideas lie within. Think.

Fire signs- Leo, Aries, Sagittarius

Water signs- Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio

(Ace of Cups, Justice, Eight of Wands)

(Knight of Cups, Queen of Coins, Four of Swords)

Suddenly everything improves! An old thorny issue magically resolves itself (in your favour) and it seems to break the deadlock, triggering a flurry of opportunity and invitation. Life picks up and your sense of passion and va va voom is totally restored. You didn’t realise how affected you were until now. Savour this sense of renewal.

Chill with those you love and like Some people tire and drain us, whilst others seem to charge our battery and revive our good humour. Spend more time with the latter this month and revel in just how magic other people can make you feel. Return the favour, pep them up too, and recognise / celebrate the invaluable friendships you have made over time.

MASALA j u n c t i o n AN ABSOLUTE GEM THAT WON'T BREAK THE BANK! After meeting Naj Aziz it's easy to see why he is so successful, he is charming, inspiring and very passionate about food. He even taught Kieran (my eldest son) some Indian food history! In Masala Junction, Naj Aziz, has produced yet another world class restaurant. With 25 years experience and award winning restaurants ‘The Indian’ and ‘MemSaab’ under his belt he just goes from strength to strength. In fact he has just won the Nottingham Bar & Restaurant Award for Best Independent Neighbourhood Venue 2019 and it's not hard to see why. Situated in the old Natwest bank on the junction between Mansfield Road and Hucknall Road in Carrington/Mapperley Park, the restaurant offers authentic Indian dishes in a building with both history and character. Naj bought the bank back in March 2015, and with the help of architect and sister in law Lyn Niblock-Aziz, he has transformed the building into the stunning restaurant it is today. Truly a family affair, Mr Aziz's brother is a partner in the venture, his niece designed all the graphics, his cousin is the manager and his nephew works front of house. The love and passion the family have for the restaurant filters down into everything they do. I visited on a Friday evening with three of my kids, although my 20 year old may argue he isn't a kid anymore! To start I had the onion bhajis (£5.25), my favourite and always a good indicator of how the rest of your meal will be. I wasn't disappointed, they were cooked to perfection, beautifully crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, delicious. The kids (sorry Kieran) shared the grilled kebab selection (for 2) made

up of chicken tikka, lamb chops and seekh kebab (£13.95 ). It was exquisitely presented with vibrant pickles, purees and a range of garnishes and was enjoyed by all. For mains the young ones went with their favourite, chicken korma, while Kieran and I were feeling a bit more adventurous. I went for the lamb rogan josh (£14.95) which was a delicious sauce packed with amazingly tender slow cooked lamb. Kieran had the junction goat ka salan (£14.95) which is a Masala Junction family recipe and left him wishing he was actually a part of their family. We accompanied our meal with a selection of rice and nan. All the food was superb and satisfying. We were stuffed to the max but still managed to polish off a couple of puddings between us. Lily chose the apple pie and I ordered the chocolate fondant which was divine and definitely passed my chocoholic taste buds test. All in all a fantastic evening. If you are looking for that wow factor then look no further than Masala Junction. It has it all.

Simply Sausages T

he word sausage originates from the Latin – salsus (salted) – as sausages used to be made from preserved or cured meat when there were no fridges or freezers. Sausages in some shape or form are popular across the world. The Germans are massive sausage eaters and in South America, Argentina and Uruguay consume loads of chorizo and morcilla (black pudding to you and me). Here in the UK we love a banger. So called because in World War II, with food shortages, sausages were so full of water that they used to explode when fried! In fact an adult meat-eater will eat an average of 2,771 sausages in a lifetime.

Sausages are versatile, cheap and come in hundreds of varieties. In our house, chorizo is a weekly staple. For a 20 minute meal, boil some pasta, mix in some pesto sauce, stir in some cooked chopped chorizo and cover with grated cheese. We also chuck it in macaroni cheese, omelettes and stews. If you have a pack of sausages in the freezer you will always have a meal in the making. Bangers and mash (try using swede or celeriac instead of potatoes), toad in the hole, full English or best of all the good old sausage sandwich. I like to pimp mine up with mustard and cheese. Here are three tried and tested easy recipes that I hope you enjoy.

Ali Wale

Posh Basked Beans on Toast

Squashy Sausage Bake

Sausage Ragu

200g chorizo sausage – sliced into half moons 1 medium onion – finely chopped 2 garlic cloves – finely sliced 2 x 400g tins cannellini beans – drained 1 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes 1 tbsp paprika 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 1 tbsp runny honey 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce Tabasco sauce to taste

1 x squash – peeled, de-seeded and cubed 1 tbsp coriander seeds – crushed (optional) 1 tsp dried chilli flakes 1 tbsp rapeseed oil (or veg oil) 1 pack 6 sausages (any) 100g breadcrumbs Few thyme sprigs – leaves picked 100g blue cheese (stilton) or feta crumbled

1 x onion - finely chopped 1 x carrot - peeled and finely chopped 2 x celery sticks -finely chopped 2 x garlic cloves - finely chopped 1 tbsp olive oil 6 x herby sausages - squeezed out of their skins 1 tbsp tomato puree 1 tsp smoked paprika 1 small glass red wine 1 x tin chopped tomatoes Salt & black pepper

Place a large pan on a medium heat and dry fry the sliced chorizo until it starts to release its oil. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving the oil in the pan.

Heat oven to 200°C. Put the squash in a baking tray, sprinkle with the coriander seeds (if using) and the chilli flakes and toss in the oil.

Heat the oil in a large saucepan over a medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion, carrot, celery and garlic. (I chop the whole lot up in a food processor. Takes 2 mins.) Fry gently until soft. Stir regularly to prevent burning.

Add the onion and garlic to the and fry gently for 5 mins. Then the paprika and balsamic vinegar fry for another few mins until soft sticky.

pan add and and

Add the tomatoes, beans and chorizo to the pan along with the honey, Worcestershire sauce and tabasco, stir well and bring to the boil then simmer gently for 30 mins, stirring every so often. Season to taste. Serve on toast and top with grated cheese if you fancy it. Serves 4.

Bake in the oven for about 30 mins. The squash should be almost cooked. Remove from oven. Squeeze the sausage meat from the skins, you should get about five small balls from each sausage, straight into the baking tray and toss in the oil. Put back in the oven for another 10 mins or until the sausage balls are cooked and the squash is soft and starting to brown. Remove from the oven again and add the crumbled cheese, then cover with the breadcrumbs mixed with thyme. Back in the oven for a few minutes until the whole lot is sizzling and browned. Serve with a crisp green salad. Scrape all the crispy bits from the tray. It’s the best bit! Serves 4.

Then add the tomato puree and smoked paprika and cook for a minute before adding the sausages (minus their skins). Use a wooden spoon or fork to break the meat up as it cooks. When the meat has browned pour in the wine and bubble for a few mins. Then add the tinned tomatoes and half a tin of water. Bring to the boil and simmer gently for at least 30 mins. Add a bit more water if it looks like its drying out. Season to taste and serve with pasta, rice, couscous, mash, jacket spuds or whatever takes your fancy. I like to add grated cheese as well. Serves 4.

Dream Door’s showroom in Beeston has now been open for a year and Jon and Hilary would like to thank all their valued customers and extend an invitation to new customers to pop in for a chat and a coffee to discuss ideas for your new kitchen or bedroom (or both!).

an honest helpful service. Whether you’re looking to freshen up your kitchen by just changing the doors, or you want to redesign the whole kitchen or bedroom, we’re on hand to help. Working with our clients every step of the way, we help take your ideas, and turn them into a reality.

Dream Doors are now proud to include a brand new collection of fully fitted and sliding wardrobes and bedroom furniture along with their high quality kitchen and bedroom refits.

Every installation is project managed, whether that is a worktop swap or a totally new kitchen. The important difference is you will only deal with the owners who care and treat every project with the same attention to detail. Not only do we change the doors, we can supply and install new units, work surfaces from laminate to glass and supply a vast range of solid surfaces along with sinks and appliances. We are proud to be main suppliers for NEFF and Samsung kitchen appliances. The advantages of sliding doors systems are well known - maximising storage, with unrestricted access while taking up no extra floor space. These doors come in a wider range of materials and finishes than you could imagine, allowing you to put them together in any combination you like, and creating a beautifully practical look that is uniquely yours. With spring around the corner, there has never been a better time to give a new lease of life to your kitchen or bedroom. How does it work? The team at Dream Doors Nottingham are on hand to help make the process as simple as possible. Forget hard sales tactics, the experienced team will offer

We provide a friendly and professional service using qualified tradesmen who will never compromise on quality or craftmanship and you can be safe in the knowledge that we will comply with all regulations as required. Our fitters will treat your home with respect and we will do all we can to minimise any disruption. Everything we do is made-to-measure, so if your kitchen or bedroom is a little out of the ordinary, we can accommodate literally every size and dimension. The beauty of choosing Dream Doors, the UK’s leading kitchen make over company, is the peace of mind that you are working with a company that has been transforming kitchens for over 19 years. Read the reviews and scores on the independent review website www.checkatrade.co.uk We are proud to have a score of 9.82/10.

Carlton & District Snooker Club Snooker is a fascinating sport. Immensely skillful and totally relaxing. Maybe it’s time for you to dust off your old cue or consider having a go for the first time. The best snooker club in Carlton is without doubt to be found at 21 Burton Road, Carlton, NG4 3DT, situated conveniently mid-way between the Old Volunteer and the Black’s Head pubs. Above a recently opened barber’s shop, called KJ’s Tonsorial Parlour, you enter by climbing the steps to the right of the shop and through the black door at the top. The gate at the bottom of the steps is open when the club is open. The club boasts four top quality full sized snooker tables which can be hired for a small fee. If you don’t own a cue then they are available for use free of charge and refreshments are also available. There is a regular steward who will meet you and if you don’t have a partner will try his best to arrange a game for you. The club is currently open from 6.30 – 10.30pm from Monday to Thursday. There is free car parking directly opposite the club entrance during these hours. I’m Simon Bonsai and have been a member now for over 10 years and thoroughly enjoy playing there every week. I’m not very good. My top break is 121, red yellow red, but everyone is extremely friendly and there is a lovely atmosphere. If you are interested in coming along, just turn up during opening hours and ask for the Steward or phone me on 07771745707. Happy Potting!

Inspire has received a National Lottery grant of £10k for an exciting heritage project, Home Cooked Heritage, in Nottinghamshire. The project focuses on uncovering and sharing the food heritage of Nottinghamshire; family recipes, food producers, social history and what food means to us all now.

Supported through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), the project will enable local young people from two schools to visit Nottinghamshire Archives and work with the materials, to both learn about, and be inspired by, food stories. They will work with heritage expert James Wright, performerstoryteller Nicky Rafferty and visual artist Clare Taylor, to produce creative and literacy responses to the heritage materials. Five adult groups in public workshops, held across five Inspire venues will also work with the artists and create a response. Works produced by the participants will be curated into a touring exhibition that will be shown in Inspire Library Galleries across the county and made into a book that will go back into the Nottinghamshire Archives to be discovered by food historians of the future. Helen Ackroyd, Principal Arts Officer at Inspire said, “We are thrilled to have received this support thanks to National Lottery players and can’t wait to see what is unearthed in Nottinghamshire Archives to inspire our artists of all ages.”

The e l a T Tidy

This is the time of year that thoughts turn to spring cleaning…or is it??? To be honest my thoughts never turn to such things. I kind of wish they did. I am not proud of the fact that cleaning is in my top 5 things that I hate to do, along with going to the dentist and clothes shopping. I always remember some advice my mum gave me – a bit of dust is good for you! And now there is research to back this up. Honest! Houses that are too clean can be unhealthy. Young children need some exposure to germs. That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it.

Did you know... • cleaning for 2 hours burns 200 calories • the average woman cleans for 12,896 hours in her lifetime (not me!) • Iceland is the cleanest country in the world Don’t get me wrong, my house isn’t a total tip. Every so often we have a blitz (usually when someone is about to visit) when I start at the top (my bedroom) and Gary starts at the bottom (living room) and we meet in the middle. Well that’s the plan. However, the way this normally pans out is that I go through the rooms like a woman possessed and when I finally arrive in the living room, sweating and bedraggled – Gary is doing what I like to call “micro – cleaning” so instead of tackling the

hoovering, dusting or cleaning the windows – he’s perched on the settee putting his chuffing records in alphabetical order!!! I am lucky to have some very house-proud friends who every so often take pity on me. After a particularly stressful loft conversion that left the whole house under an inch of dust, my kind friend offered to help me clean up. After rolling her sleeves up she asked me where my bleach cloths were. My blank stare said it all. I had failed at the first hurdle. I hung my head in shame as she explained the benefits of bleach...and cloths. Now I could let this get to me, and to be honest I used to. Why was I genetically not wired up to want to clean? Why did I not get excited at the prospect of a gleaming hob? Why did I find the idea of using cotton buds to clean the corners of my window frames faintly ridiculous? All these questions and no answers. Anyway, as the years have passed, I have decided to accept my phobia (is that even a thing?) and embrace it. Yes, dust blows across the living room floor like tumbleweed. Yes, there might be smudges on the windows, marks on the kitchen sides and scuffs on the walls. The mop sits forlorn in the garage and our cleaning products seem to last years. But one thing I can say with pride is that we can find any CD or LP within seconds!!!

uper men: S e h t f o n ws: Reig Bur tonRevie per verse u S e h t r e t En The DCEU (DC Extended Universe), DC’s answer to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is a mess. But there is one place that fans agree that DC owns the playing field; and that place is animation. From the critically acclaimed TV shows to the stellar straight to DVD animated movies, DC’s best may not be live action, but that might be okay. There is even a way more structured and cohesive shared universe producing two to three movies a year. In-fact one was released in January and I got the chance to see it at the cinema. Reign of the Supermen is the direct sequel to the surprisingly emotional and epic The Death of Superman which was released last year. When (spoiler alert) Superman dies in an earth shattering fight with the hulking Doomsday the world is without its greatest hero. Thankfully though, the Superman shaped hole in Metropolis is being filled by four Super-copycats. But with a force from beyond mounting up to attack a now vulnerable earth, are these four new heroes up to the task of taking up the mantle? Or will they crumble under the pressure? Watching straight to DVD releases on the big screen was inevitably going to highlight some issues where the true limitations of the animation and its style are quite literally magnified. Backgrounds feel flat and bystanders look like actual cardboard cut outs. Seriously, sometimes they don’t even blink or move an inch. The colours of these bombastic superhero suits are muted, robbing them of the sense of wonder they give people when seen on the pages of comics. And facially, everyone looks kind of the same. When Lois Lane and Wonder Woman were having a conversation it was hard to recognise who was being shown at any given time. When the punches start being thrown we get to see where all the budget went. The action sequences of these movies, and especially Reign of the Supermen, is always a true delight to witness. The choreography is where this team has true talent. The animation style even seems to improve, feeling smoother and looking more

detailed, which highlights how painful the film looks when things slow down. Reign of the Supermen’s plot is an okay follow up to its predecessor, however, big events ping pong characters from place to place with very little room left for any kind of development of all four of these new supermen. This really is a shame as the cast are actually really interesting and instantly loveable and it’s annoying that they simply didn’t get enough time or the writing quality they deserved. Overall, Reign of the Supermen is a fun addition to the animated shared DC universe. But outside of its explosive action and epic battles, nothing else really excels. It’s a shame, because these newly introduced characters are a delight to watch and are begging for compelling stories centred around them. It just felt like the movie was more concerned with getting the characters from point A to B, than exploring why they were on the journey in the first place. pets Name a Puppy and Change a Life

Adorable Theodora Needs A Home! After a tough start in her early life, a young cat is hoping readers can help find her a home.

With Guide Dog’s Name a Puppy scheme, your workplace, club or community group could choose a name for a guide dog puppy and sponsor them through their first year of training. Your support will set them off on their training journey to become a fully-fledged guide dog, helping a person who has lost their sight to regain their independence. As well as receiving ‘pupdates’ on your puppy’s progress through socialisation training, you will receive photographs and even get to meet your puppy. A young person’s version of Name a Puppy is also available for schools and youth groups to take part in. Community Fundraiser, Jane Shelley says: “Our life-changing guide dog partnerships are only made possible through the support of local businesses, schools, community groups and individuals. With the lifetime cost of each guide dog partnership, from birth to retirement, now over £55,000 we simply could not provide our services without the support of the local community.” Guide Dogs are inviting businesses, schools, groups and individuals to get in touch to find out more about their services and the Name a Puppy scheme. If you would like more information on how to get involved contact Nottingham Mobility Team on 0345 1430221 or via nottingham@guidedogs.org.uk

Adorable Theodora, with her two siblings and mother, were saved from living rough by local charity Animal Accident Rescue Unit. At first, this vulnerable feline family was terrified and spent the next few months living in a wardrobe, only venturing out for meals. Thanks to the care and patience from the charity’s volunteer fosterers, however, they are now ready for rehoming. ‘Theodora is shy, but extremely loving once she gets to know you. She’d love a quiet home, without children where she can reward her new, patient owner with head-butts and purrs. She’s been waiting a while and truly deserves a home as soon as possible.’ confirms her fosterer. All the charity’s cats are microchipped, flea and worm treated, FIV tested (Theodora is clear) and vaccinated for the first year - after which the new owner has responsibility. To find out more about lovely Theodora, and to possibly meet her in the fur, either email admin@aaru.org.uk, or call 01159321555, and leave a message with your contact details. The volunteer co-ordinator will reply as promptly as possible. All other animals already rescued by the charity, still waiting for permanent homes are at www.animalaccident.org.uk, and at ‘Animal Accident Rescue Unit’ on Facebook.

Walks With Emily & Friends Cotgrave Circular Walk Walk distance: 3.2 miles Difficulty: Easy Starting point: Church Lane, Cotgrave (free on street parking)

here. Please note this is a busy road so be careful when crossing. Continue along the towpath until you see the sign for Cotgrave Country Park on the right and follow this. Keep going as the path bends round and goes past a pond on the left. Follow this round to the other side and go up and over a small hill and down some steps on the other side. Here you will reach a well-trodden path, turn right and pass through a wooded area. At the end the path turns left behind some houses, and then right again through a small alley to Mill Lane. When you are back in the housing estate, go down Mill Lane to Main Road, turn right and follow this road back to Church Lane, which will be on your right.

This circular walk starts in Cotgrave village and makes its way along the Grantham Canal and Cotgrave Country Park. Grantham Canal runs for 33 miles and was primarily built for the transportation of coal to Grantham in the 1700s. For this walk, park down Church Lane – a cul-desac where you will find plenty of on road parking. From here, follow the footpath sign towards Tollerton. Follow it to the right through a field and turn immediately left. Keep following the path until you join a leafy lined alley.

To download the Ordnance Survey map route, and for more dog walks around the Nottinghamshire area and beyond: visit www.greatbritishdogwalks.com Follow us on social media for updates: Facebook: @greatbritishdogwalks Instagram: @greatbritishdogwalks Twitter: @gbdogwalks

Turn right here and follow it to the end, cutting through a hedge onto another field. Cut across the field corner until you reach a road, and here turn right. The sewerage works will be on your right. Carry on down this road until you reach an equestrian farm. Pass through a gate and follow the path past a small-holding on the right. Then cross the farm lane into the next field. Go through the gap in the hedge and head directly across this field (Tollerton Airfield will be on your left). Eventually you will reach an opening onto the Grantham Canal towpath, turn right here and carry along the tow path. Keep following this path passing the Lock Keepers’ Cottage. Continue past the disused lock until you reach Cotgrave Road and cross

There is also the chance to spot Gerald, the Rothschild’s giraffe calf. Born in October, the leggy youngster joined the herd of now ten giraffes, including his brother Fennessy and half-sister Emali. As well as the babies, there are many more animals to see both on the four-mile Safari Drive-through and on foot. From the

comfort of their own cars, guests can see lions, tigers, camels and elephants, to name but a few. There’s plenty to do on foot too, with the Park’s Discovery Trail and African Village, home to a number of amazing animals such as lemurs and lorikeets. Guests can step back in time in Land of the Living Dinosaurs, where they can walk amongst the magnificent creatures that once used to roam the earth. The new Ice Age exhibit is also home to a huge rumbling volcano and chilly ice cave, giving guests a multi-sensory experience and an insight into what it was like to be alive during this time. Located next to the African Village is Boj’s Giggly Park, a multisensory, interactive play area, perfect for younger guests. Finally, in the Adventure Theme Park, guests can purchase ride wristbands or tickets to enjoy a multitude of amusements and rides. Rothera Sharp Conveyancing Partner Retires After Four Decades At The Firm After 43 years at the firm, for 37 of which he has been based at its Mapperley office, Rothera Sharp’s conveyancing partner Martin Foulds retired in February. Prior to his retirement we caught up with him to ask him a few questions about his career and favourite moments.

before being invited to open the Mapperley office in 1982. What has it been like working for Rothera Sharp for the entirety of your career? I have enjoyed working for the firm; the Mapperley office is a pleasant place to work and many clients are complimentary about it. What was Mapperley like when you first started and how has it changed? There used to be more independent local businesses; unfortunately some of these have now closed due to their being unable to compete with the supermarkets. On the plus side Mapperley now has more good cafes, restaurants and pubs which attract people up here.

Tell us about your journey of qualifying as a solicitor? History and Latin were my favourite subjects at school but I didn’t want to be a teacher, so probably by default I became a solicitor! I completed a three year law degree at Birmingham University and then the Solicitors’ Finals at the College of Law in Guildford.

What is your favourite moment from your career? Becoming a partner in June 1983, 18 months after opening the firm’s new office in Mapperley. If anyone wants to use the services of the Mapperley office who should they contact? Sherrie Lund (0115 9246800) will be succeeding to my residential conveyancing work and Heather Parker (0115 9246803) will be succeeding to my work in wills, powers of attorney and administration of estates.

In 1976 I started working as an articled clerk at Dowson, Wadsworth and Sellers in the Lace Market in Nottingham where I was articled to a conveyancing and probate solicitor. In 1979 I qualified as a solicitor To advertise call 0115 926 9777 or email: sarah@ngmagazines.org.uk

What Goes Up by Bob Massey

I am writing this on a cold but dry day in winter. Now is the time when we start to look forward to the summer with its (hopefully) good weather and the garden parties, fairs and fetes which are still as popular as they were in the 1860s. On Monday 24th August 1863 there was a Grand Fete that had been anticipated all winter. The park at Basford Hall was opened to the public by Alderman North who was a local mine owner who wanted the event to be both a spectacular and entertaining time for all. It was to be a charitable event with the proceeds going to the General Hospital. The occasion was supported by many of the local gentry and clergy who gave their time and money to the enterprise. There were several bands playing, various entertainments and shows were provided together with traditional games and pastimes. The theme was mystery and magic. The highlight was to be a manned balloon assent. Balloons were the latest marvel of the time, as man was yet to master powered flight.

in a north easterly direction due to a high wind at this altitude. It proceeded as far as Arnot Hill near Arnold, where entering a cloud, the balloon suddenly started to collapse. It then fell in a rapidly deflating mass to the ground, landing in a field at the top of Scout Lane (now Woodborough Drive) Mapperley. The basket struck the ground and rebounded several feet. Several young men working nearby rushed to the scene and found James Chambers in the bottom of the basket. He was breathing but unconscious, with a handkerchief stuffed in his mouth. He was rushed to the Robin Hood and Little John Inn in Arnold where he was examined by Dr Wright Allen but unfortunately he had died on the way. Although he had a broken hip and two broken ribs, it was found that he had actually died from asphyxiation due to the handkerchief in his mouth. He had placed it there himself during the decent to stop the effect of the escaping hydrogen gas.

The balloon assent was to be undertaken by the very popular Mr Coxwell who had undertaken many such endeavours around the country and was an experienced aeronaught. Several thousand people were reported in attendance at this fete. At about 5.45pm it was announced that Mr Coxwell would begin his balloon assent. After the new balloon had been inflated it was found to be smaller than anticipated. Mr Coxwell was a large man and thought that he would be too heavy, so he was going to cancel the flight. One of the people who came to see the voyage was James Chambers, an instructor in basket weaving at the Blind Institute in Nottingham. He had some experience of balloons, as both he and his father had made many flights. He had some 27 flights to his credit. He was a young man and of slight build and he volunteered to take Mr Coxwells place. After much discussion this was agreed. Chambers boarded the balloon basket and the craft soon rose into the sky. When it reached it’s usual height it started to be carried quickly

Upon hearing of Chambers death the fete at Basford was immediately stopped. At the inquest it was found that there was no damage to the balloon fabric but the gas release valve was fully open and that this had caused the balloon to rapidly deflate. How this had happened was unknown as Chambers was an experienced balloonist and would never have left the valve open. It was assumed that he opened the valve to start to descend but was overcome by the escaping gas and therefore unable to close it again during the decent. The inquest verdict was accidental death. This was Nottingham’s first aerial accident.

I am researching the history of Mapperley and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail. com or post via NG5 magazine.

a helping hand Thank You from Mapperley & Arnold Rotary Club

All members of the Rotary Club of Mapperley & Arnold would like to thank everyone for their tremendous support with our Christmas float collection. In late November and in December until Christmas Eve, Santa in his sleigh, together with his helpers, walked the streets of Mapperley, Arnold and Calverton as well as static collections at the Mapperley shops, Netherfield Retail Park and Gonalston Farm Shop. In total, the magnificent sum of £7,500 was raised. We do appreciate your tremendous support and every penny will be used to help many deserving individuals and organisations such as Gedling Memory Cafe, clothing collection for Emmanuel House, food collection for Arnold Foodbank, Outward Bound, working with schools on an Eco Greenhouse project and planting crocus corms as part of the End Polio Now campaign and many, many more. Our main project undertaken in the last year was for the well being of patients who are based at Hayward House, situated at the City Hospital, who require high quality palliative care having life limiting illnesses. The Club have created a courtyard out of an unused area at Hayward House Hospice for patients and family to sit in and enjoy the surroundings. There are two types of LPA – one that governs your property and financial affairs and another which deals with your health and welfare. The possibility of losing mental capacity can be a distressing thought. However, your LPA needs to be arranged whilst you still have capacity and is best made sooner rather than later I charge £350 for a single Lasting Power of Attorney or £500 for a pair. This includes two home visits and completion of the registration process. You may also be required to pay the registration fee of up to £82 per document. Please contact Amanda Harris for an initial consultation on 0115 8780417 or 07816 921196 or via email amanda@alhlegal-willwriters. co.uk. Or visit my website www.alhlegalwillwriters.co.uk.

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team.... Nottinghamshire Police PCSO (Police Community Support Officer) Paula Hipkiss gives us an insight into the valuable role which she has held for several years. Q: What is your role? A: My role is to provide a link between the community which we serve and the police. I consider it to be a valuable role as we provide a visible presence on the streets of Nottinghamshire. We engage in conversations (intelligence gathering), visit homes to provide crime prevention advice, offer general advice, visit schools, carry out foot patrols, scene preservation, road traffic collision traffic control, low-level crime reporting and covering general policing issues. Q: Have you had to face any challenging/new experiences? A: Every day is a new challenge and no two days are the same. You need to be able to think on your feet, problem solve/offer alternative outcomes for peoples issues and problems. I have overcome many personal challenges in my time as a PCSO but I think I have learned from all my experiences and try to put them into practice to help others. Q: What does a typical day at work look like for you?

A: Every day is different but generally we discuss issues that have arisen or that need looking at both individually and as a team. Our sergeant will ask what our daily patrol plan is? This may include any agency meetings we may have. We will also catch up on any paperwork/computer work outstanding. Apart from any tasks our sergeant or control room give us, we plan our own day but you do need to be out and about and visible wherever possible. We can cover scene preservations, road traffic collision traffic flow patrols, burglary foot patrols, visits to burglary victims and house to house enquiries. My area is around a small town centre so I visit all my shops. We attend local meetings, where applicable, to offer crime prevention advice to all. You are encouraged to get involved with any local events. If there are any events in my area I will cover them (ie family events, Beavers/ Cubs/Rainbows talks, light switchons, Remembrance Sunday, Summer Play Days, Bonfire Night, Halloween, parades through the town etc). More about Paula’s role in the next edition...
