Gedling BC Committed to Providing Quality Facilities for Disabled

The council’s four leisure centres, Richard Herrod Centre, Bonington Theatre and Gedling Country Park have all been awarded the CredAble provider quality mark. The award comes from CredAbility, an independent service committed to quality for disabled customers. The awarded venues will each display the quality mark to raise awareness of the facilities on offer to disabled visitors. The accreditation has been awarded based on the council’s commitment to respond to feedback about its facilities and its provisions for the disabled. Gedling Borough Council

joins a group of venues who have been awarded the accreditation including The Royal Albert Hall and Motorpoint Arena. Gedling Borough Council started working with Nimbus Disability, who awarded the accreditation, in July 2017 and have since had all sites assessed. Changes were made to make all sites accessible for disabled visitors and making sure there were the appropriate facilities where needed. Gedling Country Park became a fully accessible and disabled friendly park thanks to the installation of a special Changing Places toilet and changing facility for people with severe disabilities, the first of its kind in the borough. To find out more about the award visit www. nimbusdisability.com and to find out more about our leisure centres and their facilities visit www.gedling.gov.uk/leisure

Make Time for a Date Night A charity in Nottinghamshire is offering advice on how to make more time for your relationship. One in ten adults in the East Midlands says they “never” find dedicated time to spend with their partner and some only spend time together just once or a few times a year.

This is according to figures released by relationship support charity, Relate. The good news is that nearly half of people living in the East Midlands manage to spend dedicated time with their partner, such as a date night, once a week or more. According to the research, partners with children are considerably less likely to find time to spend together. Relate Nottinghamshire provides relationship support and says that spending quality time together is a key ingredient for a healthy relationship. “We are concerned that time-strapped couples, particularly those with young children, are struggling to find opportunities to enjoy each other’s company and we are offering tips for turning things around” Relate counsellor, Dee Holmes says “Relationships are good for our health and wellbeing so it’s important to make time for them throughout the year”. Relate Nottinghamshire’s tips on finding time for your relationship: Remember that dates can be cheap or free. It could be a

walk in the park, a bike ride or a trip to the museum. Keep it fair. Write one list each of things you’d like to do together. Select any activities that appeal to you both, put them in a jar and pick them out randomly. Step out of your comfort zone. If your partner suggests a date idea that’s not completely up your street, don’t dismiss it immediately. Trying something that’s a bit of a challenge will let you see each other in a new light and you may end up loving it. Make it work for you. Some people like to try different things each time whereas others prefer a routine and have something they do together each week. If you’re low on time, try a date hour. This could be a coffee during the day while your kids are at a swimming lesson, an hour eating a meal together with no phones, and no TV just the two of you. Relate Nottinghamshire’s nonjudgmental services support individuals, couples, families, children, young people and friends to strengthen their relationships.

Dream Team

Run by Jon and Hilary Brown, Dream Doors Nottingham is a family run business that provides local residents with a hassle-free alternative to replacing their entire kitchen. With their door design service, Dream Doors can give you a stunning kitchen makeover for a fraction of the cost of a new re-fit. By replacing many aspects of your kitchen from the doors and drawer fronts, to work surfaces and sinks, Dream Doors can give you a kitchen facelift that will save you time, money and hassle. This could save you a staggering 40% in comparison to a full refit, and by adding new features, doors, drawers and clever storage solutions, they can transform your kitchen in a matter of hours. They offer everything from taps and tiles to sinks and splashbacks. Customers are offered a door replacement service or a complete kitchen. “There is no pressure to buy and we always supply free, no obligation quotes in advance. We’re extremely proud of our service and treat each customer with the utmost care and consideration” explains Hilary. It doesn’t matter how big or small your planned project is - the team are here to offer help and advice and are always available to offer guidance to you. Dream Doors are Checkatrade accredited and approved

by Trading Standards employing only experienced professionals. They have also won many awards including Home and Living Awards for Best Kitchen Supplier and Best Money Saving Product, so you know they set their standards high. “You only pay a deposit with the balance being paid when the whole project is completed to your satisfaction” adds Jon. Their kitchen doors are made-to-measure, meaning no dodgy fittings or misshapen doors. They will endeavour to find the perfect doors for you in both style and shape and with a massive range that shouldn’t be a problem; they have over 1000 kitchen door styles and colour combinations for you to choose from ranging from Ashford and Alabaster to Westbury and Vanilla. All replacement kitchen door designs are available with matching end panels, cornice, lighting pelmet and plinth. Your kitchen will look brand new! Pop along to the new showroom on Wollaton Road when you are ready to revitalise your kitchen and meet the dream team!

n Review: o b r a C d e r Alte s Neon Chao Heralded as Netflix’s Blade Runner, the highbudget neon sci-fi thriller, Altered Carbon, has a lot to live up to. Based on a novel of the same name by author Richard K. Morgan, the first in a trilogy of books, and having a star studded cast including The Killing’s Joel Kinnaman, was Netflix’s hefty investment worth it? Let’s find out. Set in the far-flung future where death no longer means the end of your life, Takeshi Kovacs (Kinnaman) is woken up after 250 years of sleep by super-rich Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy) to solve his own murder. Thanks to the invention of a technology called ‘stacks’, your consciousness, being and soul are all stored on a small plate in your neck. Bodies are nothing but ‘sleeves’ and as long as the ‘stack’ survives after your death, you can be rehomed in a new body. This technology has created a dystopian future where the immortal rich fly high above the clouds and the down-trodden are left to rot on the ground. And in all of this mess ex-terrorist Kovacs is supposed to solve a murder. Complicated stuff. The first thing that will snatch your attention and hold it hostage for the first few episodes are the incredible visual effects employed to create such an authentic futuristic world. This is a very good thing as Altered Carbon’s script is a dense, and at times, off-putting piece of work. While it is undeniable that the core concept of the show, technology that immortalises the human race, is a cool idea, some of the other ideas introduced feel needlessly complicated. What’s worse is that when they are finally explained, six episodes in, they still don’t really make sense and just clutter the world of Altered Carbon, instead of enriching it. It also takes a while to warm to the characters. Because this world’s mythology and lore are so layered, spanning multiple worlds as well as unthought-of technology, the first episodes of the show seem to be more concerned with (poorly) explaining that, than actually getting you to like the characters. Thankfully, by episode four, Altered Carbon kicks into gear and finally gives us a reason to care about them and what is happening in this stunning and intriguing world.

Allowing the incredible acting behind them to shine. Relationships you actually care about and character motivations that actually make sense are all revealed as the mind-numbingly complex plot is mercifully streamlined to an engrossing and thrilling point. While the beginning of Altered Carbon may be a rocky but beautiful ride, it is worth hanging in there, as the show’s hold over your mind extends to your heart too. Altered Carbon is a slow crawl to brilliance, but it gets there. With a cluttered and overly-complex opening, you wouldn’t be blamed for being scared away from this high-concept detective-thriller. But stick around and you’ll be rewarded with a rich and beautifully tragic world, a thought provoking and intense plot, loveable and well-acted characters, as well as some action that is not for the faint-of-heart to top it all off. Altered Carbon = 9/10 © Sam Burton (aged 20)

An under used squash court, at the Gedling Borough Council owned leisure centre, has been converted to make way for a new strength and conditioning free-weight training studio. The new £20,000 expansion includes an Olympic lifting platform and bench press, squat rack, cable crossover, benches, dumbbells and weight plates. The new gym expansion will double the existing capacity. 68% of members at Calverton Leisure Centre fall into either the millennial 22-37 age range (36%) or are teenagers aged 1419 (32%). The investment in the facilities reflects customer needs and current trends in the health and fitness industry. Councillor Henry Wheeler, Portfolio Holder for Housing, Health & Well-being said; “The new facilities look fantastic and are a great addition to Calverton Leisure Centre. With UK gym memberships increasing all the time, we understand the need for modern equipment and extra space. We are very proud to offer affordable facilities like this one at Calverton for our residents, on their doorsteps.” For more information about Gedling Borough Council’s leisure facilities visit www.gedling. gov.uk/leisure

Is it an orangery... or a conservatory? “What’s the difference between a conservatory and an orangery?” is a question we’re often asked, yet still find devilishly difficult to answer.

perhaps just a touch more substantial and elegant, and a conservatory more generally affordable.

Back in the 17th Century, when orangeries first saw the light of day, it was more straightforward. Because conservatories hadn’t yet been invented. The orangery was a newfangled European idea for keeping wealthy homeowners’ citrus trees alive through the winter months... hence the name. I guess we’re quite fortunate that oranges and lemons were more popular than pomegranates at the time – it’s pretty hard to imagine the ‘pomegranatery’ catching on in quite the same, trip-off-thetongue way!

The difference is clear as mud! If you’d like to find out more, view our gallery pages at www. klg.co.uk, phone 0115 9221155 or visit our showrooms at The Mill, Queens Road East in Beeston NG9 2FD or Rutland House, Nottingham Road in Ilkeston DE7 5BB.

Orangeries were actually designed to be warm as much as bright, whereas the less expensive conservatories they later inspired were thought of rather more as palaces of light for delicate shrubs and bushes. But the differences are becoming fewer and fewer as time goes on. Orangeries traditionally had more structural brickwork than conservatories, which had fullglass roofs and, indeed, more glass all over. However the characteristic ‘lantern’ roof of the orangery has now expanded so much as to be virtually indistinguishable from many conservatory roofs. And at KLG Rutland we’ve taken this evolution a stage further with the ‘orangette’ – an orangery with a virtually fully glazed roof. If you really want to differentiate between the two, you could describe the orangery – with its brickwork base, pillars and parapet-style roof - as a more extravagant bridging of the gap between a full-blown single-storey home extension and the uPVC-framed, 80% glazed, dwarf-walled conservatory. Bear in mind, too, that an orangery will generally be considered a permanent extension and, as such, more likely to require planning permission, whereas most conservatories don’t. But, of course, they don’t all fit neatly into those categories! What we can say for certain is that either provides wonderful, additional, light and airy living space to your home. Both will certainly add value to your property, with an orangery

The Magical...

by

What an enchanting restaurant! Tucked away off the A52 just before the BP petrol station is the wonderful Mewar Haveli. We visited the restaurant on a Sunday afternoon and were greeted at the door by the friendly and authentically dressed staff. The restaurant itself is traditionally Indian, decorated with vibrant colours and fabulously colourful pictures. It boasts beautiful lakeside views making you feel miles away from everything. To start we shared 3 starters, Onion Bhaji (£7.95), Tandoori Paneer Kebab (£7.95) and the delicately spiced Malai Tikka (£8.95) which were presented beautifully and all absolutely delicious. For mains the kids had a Veggie Korma (£10.95) and a Chicken Korma (£13.95), and we shared a Shahi Chicken (£13.95) served in a blend of herbs, cashew nuts and cream & a Desi Lamb (£16.95) lean lamb off the bone cooked in a rich spicy sauce. Both dishes were amazing with the lamb definitely melting in the mouth, and all the kids loved the kormas. We shared a selection of naan breads and pilau rice all cooked to perfection. A palette cleanser of mango sorbet was served between courses and the hot towels were a wonder to behold! I’m not going to spoil it but they need to be seen to be believed! We only just managed to squeeze in three puddings between us, we chose the Crepes Suzette £7.95 which were cooked right there at our table, flames and all! Pistachio Kulfi £4.95 served in a spun sugar basket and Gulab Jamun, which is an Indian sweet dough ball, £4.95. Overall a truly magical journey, with delicious food, a live pianist and wonderful surprises along the way. If you are looking for something extra special then Mewar Haveli is the place to go. We will definitely be returning and the sooner the better.

MORE CHEESE PLEASE I

am an unashamed cheese lover. There is not much in the great global canon of cheese that I have tried that I don’t like. I can even be tempted to a gloop of the notoriously strong Stinking Bishop if the mood takes me. Cheese has a fascinating history, although no one is entirely sure who made the first cheese, it is believed that the process dates back more than 5000 years. Its manufacture is even depicted in the murals of ancient Egyptian tombs. Some believe it was discovered accidently when an Arabian merchant put his supply of milk into a sheep’s stomach pouch as he set out on his journey. The hot sun and the rennet in the stomach lining caused the milk to separate into curds and whey. Today there are a myriad of cheeses, eaten almost everywhere in the world in one form

or another. In Nottinghamshire we have the “king” amongst cheeses in our local Stilton and have recently re-discovered our love of the traditional soft “Colwick Cheese”. I can’t think there is ever a day when there isn’t a good mature Cheddar in my fridge, but I am easily tempted and more often than not there will be at least half a dozen pieces of cheese, of varying vintage, nestled at the back somewhere. A quick perusal today reveals, Cheddar, Emmental, Parmesan, Haloumi, Edam, Stichelton, Cambozola and Roquefort, as well as several cream cheeses. As I am probably not alone in this, I thought it might be useful to share some really, really easy recipes for using up your left-over cheeses (of course you can always just mix it all together and grill it on toast, if that works for you!).

Easy Peasy Cheese Straws

Unctuous Baked Cheese with Garlic and Herbs

Peach and Blue Cheese Salad

Ingredients (serves 8)

Ingredients (serves 4 as a starter)

Ingredients (serves 4)

350g pack ready-rolled puff pastry 4 large handfuls of strong hard cheese, grated (Parmesan, Emmental, Cheddar, Gruyere all work well) A little plain flour

1 soft cheese with a rind such as camembert or brie, in a box Handful of chopped herbs (chives, thyme, flat-leafed parsley) 1 garlic clove, finely sliced.

½ Ciabatta loaf, sliced 1 bag mixed salad leaves Handful of mint leaves, torn 4 peaches cut into 8 pieces 140g blue cheese of your choice (brie also works) 100g sugar snap peas, sliced lengthways For the dressing: 1tsp clear honey Squeeze lemon juice 2tbsp olive oil

Method Heat the oven to 220°C Unroll the puff pastry and scatter over the handfuls of cheese, fold in half, seal the open edges. Lightly flour a surface and then roll out your pastry until it is around the thickness of a pound coin. Cut into 1cm strips and twist 3 times. Lay on a non-stick baking sheet, scatter over some more cheese and then bake for up to 12 mins or until golden brown.

Method Heat the oven to 220°C. Take the cheese out of its box and remove all packaging. Pierce the top of the cheese with a sharp knife and insert pieces of garlic, then place the cheese back in the box. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 15mins. Take it out of the oven and remove the lid. Cut a large cross through the top of the cheese and peel back the rind. Scatter over the herbs, and perhaps a grind of black pepper. Serve with crusty bread.

Method Toast the slices of ciabatta and drizzle with 1tbs olive oil. Make the dressing by whisking the remaining oil, honey and lemon juice, season to taste. Place all the other ingredients in a large bowl and toss with the dressing before serving.

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team.... The hot weather is finally on the way (hopefully). We can pack away the woolly cardigans, cosy slippers and furry mittens . Bring on those long summer days (weather permitting!). Our key message is to have fun and enjoy your time off, but please be safe and stay vigilant during the coming summer months. Things to consider in the hot weather: At home... Thieves can get in through open windows, even when you’re in the house. If you are indoors, use fanlight windows for ventilation and lock the lower windows. If you do not have these, use lockable window restrictors. When you go out, always close and lock external doors and windows, even if you are just going out for a short time.

PCSO Michelle Kent 07702 141842

Window locks can be seen from outside and could deter a burglar from forcing the window.

PCSO Emily Raymond 07815 576998

If you have deadlocks, use them. They make it more difficult for a thief to get out again. Never leave the key near the door or in an obvious place nearby.

PCSO Joe Riley 07894 402983

If you have a flat roof extension, the windows above it should always be locked.

sounding after 20 minutes and lights don’t disturb your neighbours. Out and about... Lakes and rivers can look inviting on a hot day but beware of possible dangers beneath, like jagged rocks, broken bottles and strong currents. Pets... Please don’t leave dogs in vehicles – even for a few minutes – as temperatures inside can rise rapidly, making dogs very distressed. It can even prove to be fatal. When the weather is warm, owners should always ensure that their pets have plenty of cool, fresh drinking water. Vehicles... Unlocked doors and open windows on vehicles are invitations to criminals, so secure it even if you are only popping into a shop, paying for petrol or getting a car park ticket. Don’t forget to lock the boot and sun roof too. Be a good neighbour - if you see anyone acting suspiciously in your neighbourhood, call the police on 101 or, in an emergency, 999. For more advice and crime prevention information please visit our website http://www. nottinghamshire.police.uk/advice

Never leave garages or sheds unlocked, especially if they connect to your property.

Communication Skills -

it’s not all about your CV by Helen Jones Time and time again we see candidates fall at the first hurdle when job searching – and not because of their previous experience or practical skills. It’s because at interview, when faced with face to face contact they simply cannot communicate efficiently and build rapport which is essential within most working environments. Good business still relies on building and maintaining effective relationships despite our growing reliance on computers and digital technology. The value of good personal communication can’t be underestimated. In a recent survey the following are the skills that most hiring/line managers would like to see in their employees: • Listening – pay close attention to what the other person is saying. This allows you to respond appropriately. Don’t pre-empt what you think is being said. Actively listen. • Body language – be aware that your hand gestures, eye contact etc. sends a strong message to the other person. If you are defensive and refuse direct eye contact you could be misconstrued as shifty or untrustworthy. Have a relaxed, genuine stance. • Empathy – Nobody can agree on everything 100% of the time but even if you disagree with an employer or work colleague it’s important for you to try and understand and respect their point of view. • Confidence – not the arrogant “It’s my way or no way” type of confidence but a confidence that demonstrates belief in your ability to do the job and follow through where required. A firm and friendly tone when dealing with others. • Being personal – use the other person’s name, maintain eye contact, be interested in what they have to say. All this will leave a positive impression long after the conversation/meeting is over. And finally…Thank You. The power of these two words is considerable. Thank people for their time, their efforts, their suggestions and their support. I defy any worker not to feel good when someone utters those two words to them. Be it senior management or a colleague. Good manners cost nothing as my grandmother used to say.

Handcrafted, illustrated benches, made in tribute to miners, were revealed at a special ceremony at Gedling Country Park. Gedling Colliery miners, dressed in full mining gear, as well as school children who helped to design the benches unveiled the benches at the event. The two specially designed benches – one which depicts an underground mining scene and the other an over ground image – were designed by local artist Richard Janes, who worked with GCSE art students from Christ the King Secondary Academy, in Arnold. Richard Janes, the artist who built the benches said, “The benches tell the story of the Colliery at Gedling. The overground story with the headstocks and landscape of the pit, the underground story with the miners, tunnels, lamps and pit ponies. The students at Christ the King were shown the ideas and inspirations that went into the Gedling flame tree and devised their own amazing designs. These then fed into the design of the decorative panels for the benches.” Gedling Colliery was the life-blood of the village and its surrounding areas for nearly a century, until it closed in 1991. The site stood derelict for over 20 years before being transformed into a country park in March 2015.

Tanya About Town S

ummer is now well and truly upon us and so we cross our fingers with the weather as we welcome festival season. Lakeside’s International Children’s Theatre and Dance Festival, Wheee! has become a key event in the regional arts calendar for children and families. Set in the beautiful surroundings of Highfield Park there will be a host of performances by international companies: 28 May - 3 June. There’s more family entertainment on the way at Arnold Carnival (16-17 June). Big stage entertainment comes from local and professional entertainers. Favourites also include a fun dog show, children’s fun fair, craft marquees and food. Whilst we’re on the subject of food, prepare to make the most divine ice creams you’ve ever tasted at The School of Artisan Food (21 June/24 July). During this practical one-day course you will try your hand at making eight different types of vanilla ice cream. Prefer someone to cook for you? Craig Floate returns to Debbie Bryan after multiple sellout Supper Clubs to host an unforgettable evening on 15 June. This pop-up dining experience has a fresh, seasonal menu, and is never one to miss due to its high demand. Love music? Don’t miss the Forest Live season as Sherwood Pines welcomes Paul Heaton & Jacqui Adams (8 June), Gary Barlow (23 June) and UB40 (24 June). Nottingham’s biggest music festival, Splendour, returns for its tenth year at Wollaton Park (21 July). An epic line up of legends include

The Charlatans, Paloma Faith and The Stranglers. Not to be outdone, Southwell plays host to a perfect blend of rising stars, festival favourites and music legends at The Gate to Southwell Festival (7-10 June) and Newark Festival is back for its seventh year, headlined by Marti Pellow, along with Kim Wilde, Go West, Nick Heyward and Limahl. Outdoor entertainment continues in the form of theatre. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland will bring song and dance to Wollaton Park (8 July). Bring a picnic and enjoy a night of magical theatre under the stars at Newstead Abbey with Sense & Sensibility (15 July) Enjoy more of the great outdoors by joining the Sherwood Forest Trust for a special weekend celebrating the life and history of the great British Woodland, as they hold the annual Major Oak Woodland Festival in the heart of Sherwood Forest (9-10 June) or join the Nottingham Booklovers Walk (3 June/1 July) approx 1 mile in distance, it will showcase the city and celebrate the many writers, poets and published authors associated with Nottingham. Finally, see the city in a different light. Sunrise City is a 5k run or walk that takes place at 5.30am. The route takes you past famous landmarks, including Nottingham Castle and Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem before a picturesque return along the Notts-Beeston Canal (6 July).

A Tale of Two Gussets! It could have been due to a hormonal imbalance (women of a certain age will know what I mean). Or maybe the need to feel, well, needed. With two teenage boys who rarely make an appearance downstairs these days, the living room had started to feel a bit empty. Whatever the reason, after managing to get through over fifty years pooch free, I have now acquired two within the space of a couple of years. They say second born children tend to be a bit of a nightmare - and I can vouch for that! However I wasn’t warned that second adopted dogs would be the same. Too late now. Herbie has arrived and is here to stay! It appears this cute rescue puppy is half dog and half mountain goat. Managing to scale work surfaces that no normal dog should be able to reach. And eating. Absolutely. Everything. In Sight. Coming home from work feeling pretty pleased with myself for having the dinner already cooked I was met with the devastating news that Herbie had eaten the whole lot. Chippy supper it was then. My underwear drawer is not somewhere anyone needs to go, believe me. However Herbie decided that he quite liked the look of it. I am now the proud owner of some interesting garments. Two piece bra’s, footless socks and crotchless pants (not that sort!). M & S here I come! Gussets seem to be a particular favourite of this chewing machine. Cycling shorts offer a gourmet delight, softer and chewier than your basic pants, and at £175 a pair, more expensive than caviar. Thank goodness for Google. I found a company in Italy called Dr Pad (yes, really) that was able to

replace said gusset for a fraction of the price of new shorts. The new, even better shorts arrived safely back and lasted about 3 hours before, in a momentary lapse of vigilance, Herbie struck again! New gusset swiftly destroyed. Another email to Dr Pad, much hilarity from Italy and requests for photo’s of the now infamous puppy and the shorts are winging their way back to be repaired once more. Such is the popularity of young Herbie, that the lovely Serena at Dr Pad has offered to send “as a gift” a pile of defective pads for him to chew. I don’t know much about puppy training or dog psychology but I am guessing this would be a really bad move, encouraging a gusset fixation that could only end badly. So I politely declined the offer. Why not buy him chewing toys? I hear you shout. So far we have spent the price of a family hatchback on these toys. They last about an hour and then disappear - coming out the other end a day or so later, if you get my meaning. We have finally found a company called Mighty Mutts (thanks Dionne at Cuddles A Plenty) who guarantee their toys for three years! So far, so good. Toy still intact after 3 weeks. I will keep you posted... Meanwhile everything is locked up, shut away and raised 10 feet off the ground. I have to dash now as he has his whole front half immersed in the kitchen bin. Arghhhhhh. © Ali Wale

Baxter: ‘I want a house not a mouse!’

Adventures of Charlie and Bandit Ex-serviceman, Charlie Hammerton from Arnold, has sold all his belongings to travel the world with his pet ferret, Bandit, raising money for charity. We will be getting updates from Charlie on his adventures!

Local rescue cat, Baxter, is more keen on finding a house than a mouse - can you help? Aged about 7 years, Baxter was rescued by local charity, Animal Accident Rescue Unit but is still, many months on, waiting for a home. Suffering from cat flu whilst living rough, has left him with a few easilymanaged health issues for which he is best rehomed alone. This beautiful boy, however, is an ideal companion, as his fosterer explains: ‘He loves chasing toys including my dressing gown cord! He meows for fuss and is affectionate. His special food, which I can easily get, keeps him in tip-top shape, and his photos don’t do him justice – people really must meet him to give him a chance.’ As with all the charity’s cats, Baxter is micro-chipped, flea and worm treated, littertrained plus vaccinated – his new owner is responsible for further vaccinations. Baxter would love to hear from potential adopters. To arrange to meet and for details, contact the Adoption Officer at admin@aaru. org.uk, who will reply as soon as possible. All potential adoptions need a successful homecheck. Cats are not rehomed on or near busy roads, unless indoor-only. With no premises, animals are fostered in volunteers’ homes. The charity does not cover healthy strays/unwanted pets, but helps neglected, injured and vulnerable animals and birds. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should leave a detailed message on 0115-9321555. For all rescued animals needing homes, see www.animalaccident.org.uk.

The small, snowy clearing deep in Swedish woodland would be our home tonight. I was anxious. We were expecting -11 and I had to ask myself, why I was doing this? Why had I left my job, sold my possessions and set off as a charity ambassador to travel the world with my pet ferret? Exactly one year ago, I started a different adventure, hiking across Hadrian's wall with Bandit my famous ferret. It was 84 of the toughest miles we've ever walked, but an important fundraiser for my mother who had just passed away. Since then, we've raised thousands of pounds for worthy causes, won the Nottingham Heroes award and supported many charities. The charity events we conquer are not for our own glory. They're for others who have lost the strength to fight, or to further help those who need our enthusiasm. With this in mind, inconvenient conditions didn't seem so bad after all, and I was living the path I'd chosen. It's the idea that dreams have the potential to come true that makes life so exciting. Our dream, for whatever reason, was to honour the charity Save Our Soldier with this event - travel the world with my best friend, Bandit the ferret, and tonight that means -11 in the Arctic circle. © Charles Hammerton Adventures with the Bandit/Save Our Soldier To donate visit: www.saveoursoldier.co.uk

THE DEADLIFT I would like to talk about the deadlift or as it is fondly known...the dreaded deadlift. Most people stay well away from this fundamental exercise, and why is that? The most common reason is “it gives me a bad back.”

Technical key points for the deadlift

Many years ago, that was my excuse, but now it’s my go to exercise for development. It isn’t about the lift, it isn’t the lift that’s causing your issues… it’s you!

• Bar should be set to correct height (height of a calibrated plate or roughly a third way up your shin)

Let me explain a little. The deadlift is probably the most important lift within any training programme.

• Conventional (not sumo) deadlift stance is just inside shoulder width

• It strengthens bone density

• As you look down, the bar should be inline with the balls of your feet

• It improves full body strength • It mobilises the full body in correct form • It can be used in high or low volume training to produce a specific outcome • It triggers hormone stimulation So why do people avoid this exercise? Simply put…. Your SI joint (sacroiliac joint) which is the first junction in the lower spine. This is the area most say ‘I slipped a disk doing deadlifts’. This is not the case. The twinge you may have felt would be from poor mobility and poor form, compressing on one side of your vertebrae, trapping a nerve. A visit to an osteopath and a click and a crack usually resolves this issue, but then you stay clear of deadlifting yet again. At Strength and Physique we say challenge yourself, don’t let fear of deadlifts hold you back. Here’s how to improve your lift: • Warm up well before stretching

• Your grip should be narrow but wide enough for clearance for your elbows to pass your knees WITH STRAIGHT ARMS • Your grip, NEUTRAL or ALTERNATE, will depend on grip strength, alternate is stronger • As you bend to grip the bar your hips should be just above knee height and you should feel hamstring engagement as you take the load through your heels • Before you pull, your spine should be straight (while holding all these other key points in place) and your shoulder blades drawn together and down lifting your chest • Head should be in a neutral position • And lastly before you pull, lock in your lats OR imagine bending the bar around your shins • Once all these are in place take a big breath, tighten your abs and hold until you complete 1 rep driving downward instead of pulling upwards, driving your hips towards the bar

• Stretch and mobilise your full body, YES especially your hip rotation and hamstrings

NOW execute the lift with great form.

• DO NOT go heavy in your first lift, this is to programme the body after stretching in how it should move throughout the lift

If you would like more information on deadlifting, head over to our Instagram page where you’ll find our Youtube channel for further information on key points for form with exercise.

• Progressively increase the weight, staying within your capability • Follow the technical pointers opposite before you even lift the bar

Thinking about dieting? ...read this first

Don’tCalories settle a diet plan, are more for of a measure for processed foods. upg Ditch the processed stuff and you won’t need to count calories. health instead

“Diet starts on Monday" is a phrase I have repeated to myself many times, because, well we all need that last blow out before things get seriously healthy. Except that the diet never really starts.

At times I’d make it through Monday or maybe even Tuesday with a calorie restricted meal consisting of mainly lettuce and other similarly non-satiating ingredients, only to find myself “accidentally” eating an entire pack of biscuits in some raging hunger fuelled act of retaliation. With that indulgence, the diet would be ruined and I’d have to wait for another Monday to get seriously healthy again. If this pattern Don’t sounds familiar, don’t despair, we’ve all been there, in fact the majority of diets fail. Mostly, we aim to eat too little, count calories or simply lack the right support to correctly reinforce positive habits. So what’s the solution?

Besides, what you get out of the food i.e. the nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals are far more important.

SUPPORT Like with anything new, it helps a great deal if you aren’t alone in the process. Let’s face it, trying to make better food choices when constantly exposed to “bad” foods is hard enough, let alone doing this without a pat on the back. These days you only have to mention the word all of a sudden everyone questions expect a diet dietand plan your motives. It is advantageous if friends and family are supportive, but the best way to stay on track is to Evidence answer to a professional who is less likely to allow you that Sunday night binge. STRUCTURE Probably the most important aspect of any weight loss plan is structure. Think about it this way: you are hungry, have had a busy day and you have no idea what to have for dinner, then carbs accidentally jump into your mouth! “Something healthy” is rarely tangible whilst ravenously hungry, which is whyWhat a well structured eating plan that gives you concrete priorities is a must for success.

NO MORE CALORIES First things first, calorie counting has a limited use. Don’t believe me? Here is why: A 100g bar of milk chocolate has approximately 600 calories which is exactly the same calorie content that 100g of almonds have. If you eat 100g of almonds, you can’t break down the fibrous nuts so well, so chances are you only actually absorb 1/3 of the calories or The Wholefood Plan is a 30-day eating plan based on circa 200 calories. This pattern is the same for most It’s personal the principles of structure and support without the need unprocessed foods. Eat the chocolate however and you to count calories. It’s expert-led and tailored to your are stuck with the full 600 calories. individual needs for maximum results. Visit www.wholefoodwarrior.co.uk/theplan for more information.

Bingham and District Choral Society

After our high-octane performance of the Verdi Requiem with Mansfield Choral Society in May, the choir’s summer singing season will once again have an Italian flavour. As part of the 2018 Byron Festival, Bingham and District Choral Society will be joining the Newstead Abbey Singers, the Sarzana Youth Choir (from Southwell’s Italian twin town), the choir of St Mary’s Parish Church and the Newstead Brass Band in a very special concert to celebrate Lord Byron’s time in Italy exactly 200 years ago. The concert will take place on Saturday 7th July at 7.30pm in St Mary’s Parish Church, Newark. Rehearsals begin on Wednesday 23rd May 2018 at Carnarvon School, Nursery Rd, Bingham (7.15pm – 9.30pm). This would be a great opportunity for new singers to try out the choir for a short season. Contact Val Morgan on 0115 933 2353 if you would like to come along. Ticketing details for the July concert can be found on our website: www.binghamchoral.org.uk

Holiday survival guide It’s getting to that time of year when you’re considering taking a holiday. Possibly abroad. Maybe even with your children. If this is the first time you’ve taken them with you overseas then you’ll need to read this survival guide, full of handy hints from someone who’s been there, done that, and got the overpriced t-shirt. DISCLAIMER: Just to be clear, this isn’t your holiday. Forget any ideas about having some ‘you time’. You will not get to relax. You will not get romantic moonlit walks. Those days are well and truly over. STARTING: If you’re going on holiday by plane the kids will be either delighted or terrified. We had one thinking he was going on a space rocket and another who didn’t want to be crammed onto an exploding canister filled with rocket fuel and warm bodies. FLYING: The aeroplane is exciting for the first ten minutes. Once you’re through the clouds, you have 2 hours to kill and you’ll have left the felt tip pens in the other bag. The one in the hold. The one you can’t get to. The one your child desperately needs. Right now. And you brought a book to read on the flight, you fool! LIVING: Next up is the apartment. Also known as a cramped box with some internal walls. You get what you pay for and in this instance you paid for a bedroom with no hanging space, a bathroom door that doesn’t close, and a kitchen that encourages you to eat in local restaurants. BEACHING: You’ve got the water, sunscreen and hats to match your optimism. But have you checked out the beaches in advance? There’s little more awkward than finding a beautiful beach and wandering down the coast only to find yourselves amongst a nudist colony for elderly couples. It’s amazing how much you can distract your kids from what’s right in front of them when you really need to. EATING: At some point you’ll have to eat out on the holiday. Let’s be clear, you are “that family”. The one that constantly utters the threat of “there’ll be no dessert” through gritted teeth, the one with the kids that don’t stop talking.

Ever. They seem to think they’ll eat out every night but you have a budget. That budget is about as solid as the promises the banks made before the economy went pear shaped. You may want to keep it tight but ice cream, meals, postcards, souvenirs, parking, and the mafiosi who run the resorts supermarkets all conspire to ensure this is the most expensive holiday you’ve ever been on. And beach toys. Because suddenly your kids want to play frisbee, cricket, rounders, tennis, football, volleyball, kabaddi and anything else that happens on sand. You’ll have a great time, but they will run you ragged. One child will be hyper, whilst the other is angelic. You’ll eventually solve the puzzle of why Child A is nuts and as soon as that’s solved Child B will start acting up. And on it goes. At holidays end your negotiation skills will be so honed that you could single-handedly solve the Syrian crisis. SLEEPING: You put the first night down to excitement. They go to bed late looking like extras from The Walking Dead. Day 2, they keep wandering into the living room with excuses as to why they can’t sleep (“I’m not tired”). Day 3, you realise their goal: to ensure you and your partner can’t have any time together. And before you know it, you’ve surrendered your double bed so the kids can snuggle with mum and you’re left sleeping in a child’s single bed alone. HOMING: And suddenly it’s over. You’re on the plane home and back to reality. Later you’ll pick up a shoe and the sand will pour onto the floor. You’ll use it as an excuse to look at the photos and you’re already planning next year.

Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

DISCOVERING GENIUS IN CHILDREN “Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.”– Plato

A

s a teacher and creative writer, I often feel that the modern world is still catching up to Plato. The genius he speaks of in the quote above is something I have witnessed. To see it is life changing. It brings a new level of respect for the child. Looking at the ideas of children this way helps us to see their innate genius; being aware of the many types of intelligence is the next step. Each child has their own unique blend of intelligence types. They may show a strong specialism in one

area or be a “general” - showing broad skill in many areas. If we were all brilliant at mathematics, but no-one could build a house, we’d soon be in trouble as a species. As a child plays, their brain is wiring itself, developing and specializing, thus it is through playfulness that genius emerges. By engaging in creative play with our kids, and by understanding the many forms genius can take, we help them to develop into confident, creative and happy adults.

The Monster Mash “ROAR!” Dad jumps out from behind the garden wall, arms raised with eyes as bright as birthday cake candles. Alex takes a step backwards, his mouth falling open; then he giggles. Beneath what looks like green mashed potato, Dad has a monster snarl-smile. Then, with a chuckle, his hands start to wave about as he speaks. “Thing is, Alex, I’m writing a monster story and I need to get in character, you know, see things from the monster’s perspective. Tell me, was I scary?”

monster masks! Do you want to make one too?”

Alex giggles again, “Um, a bit. Maybe jump a bit more?”

Fingers wigglin,’ Go a ticklin,’

“Yeah,” says Dad, “you’re right. Do you think I need claws?”

I’m gonna tickle you!

Alex jumps on the spot, grinning; “And fangs. You need fangs. Pointy and sharp.” Dad nods as if he is hearing wise advice, his gooey green face is a picture of thought. “And,” Alex continues, ”our teacher says you have to know what your character wants. So, what does the monster want?” “Oh, that’s easy,” says Dad, “the monster wants to win a monster competition. He has to be the scariest monster in monster-land. If he loses he has to be nice to everyone and, for a monster, that’s kinda rough. So, do you want to help me make fangs?” “Oh, yes please,” says Alex, “or a paper mache mask!” “Great idea,” says Dad, cleaning the potato from his face. “Let’s make

“Yeah!” says Alex, nodding quickly, “but I want mine to be red and you have to call me, ‘Blarg The Bloody.’ You can be, ‘Achoo the Boogeyman.’” Dad laughs, “I get to be ‘Achoo the Bogeyman’, do I? Because I hear that Bogeymen are all expert ticklers. In fact, they are the best.” Dad raises his two tickling fingers and begins ‘The Tickle Song’ in his best monster voice, Ribs, arms, bellies too! Alex screams and runs; Dad jogs behind him, fingers wiggling, smile wide. Their laughter blends like an old familiar tune, as natural as the birdsong, and the last crumbs of green mashed potato mark their trail.

T

he Lost City Adventure Golf, based in the heart of Nottingham at The Cornerhouse, houses two separate 18 hole, rainforest themed, indoor adventure golf courses - Sacred Skull Pass and Temple Trail! Perfect for budding adventurers aged from 3 to 103, The Lost City is fantastic fun and suitable for everyone – whether you’re looking for an activity to do with the family, fancy an adventure with your friends, plan on bringing that date you’re trying to impress or want to beat the boss with your colleagues on a work night out, The Lost City is the perfect venue. Whatever the weather, The Lost City is open all year round, 7 days a week from 10:30am to 11:00pm on weekdays, 10.00am to 11.00pm on Saturdays and 10.00am to 10.00pm on Sundays. It has quickly become a hugely popular Nottingham destination for families, students, children’s birthday parties and corporate events and unless your group size is 10 or more, you can simply come down and play – there’s no need to book! Both of our courses have been designed to be wheelchair user and pushchair friendly so all adventurers can play! ‘We took the kids on a wet and windy afternoon in spring, in fact some of the kids are actually teenagers (ages 7, 9, 17 & 19). We walked into what looked like a film set from Indiana Jones with stone temples, wooden bridges and

hanging vines looping from tree to tree, it is truly magical. Some really helpful staff greeted us and set us on our golfing adventure. We were given the Sacred Skull Pass course and kitted out with clubs to fit our heights and different coloured balls – very handy when there are 6 of you. The course was set with differing degrees of difficulty; some holes are straightforward while others are quite tricky. The weather changes in the jungle too with rain and lightning projections being cast around the course, but don’t worry you don’t get wet! We all had a thoroughly great time and enjoyed a drink in the jungle themed Tiki cocktail bar afterwards too. The kids are already planning when we will be back to try the Temple Trail’ by Cat Hedges

Children at Porchester Junior School have been celebrating International Women’s Day and honouring the inspirational women in their own lives too. Deputy Head Teacher at the school, Helen Foster, said that the activities were both educational and fun. “As a values-based school, we feel that it is vital to inspire children, and to get them to think about how they are going to inspire others.” During the day the children dressed in the suffragette colours of green, white and purple and listened to each member of staff talk about the women that they have been inspired by. To link with World Book Day, the Upper School also looked at gender stereotyping, and the role of women in books. Helen says “The children were brilliant. They were respectful and interested in what we were exploring. They all spoke about the inspirational women in their lives too. They showed empathy and sometimes outrage that women were not always seen as equals. I think those discussions influenced the messages in their cards which were thoughtful and moving, saying how their mothers inspired them. Some children made cards for other women too, like their teachers, aunts and grandmas to name a few. Even today, one child has made cards for each member of staff saying how they inspire her!”

Sergeant Hallam by Bob Massey

On Tuesday 18th April 1916, a full military funeral took place. This was in the middle of the First World War so certainly not unusual. Many soldiers who returned to Britain died of wounds sustained in the battles in France and elsewhere. On this occasion however, things were slightly different. The deceased in this case was William Hallam. He had been born in Mapperley in 1869, the eldest child of James and Elizabeth Hallam. James Hallam was a gas engineer. While the couple lived in Mapperley they had another son, Henry, who was born four years later. The couple appear to have resided in the village for about five years before moving to Carlton where two more sons were born, John, in 1876 and Samuel in 1877. The Hallams next move was to 42 Oldham Street, Sneinton where in 1880 they had a daughter, Annie. By 1886 William, who was now 17, decided to join the army and enlisted in the 2nd Lincolnshire Regiment. He was posted to India and as a result spent the next 17 years in the country. While on leave in 1896 he married Emma Searston, a milliner from Tibshelf in Derbyshire. The couple eventually had four children, one of whom died very young. When the Boer War broke out, William was transferred to the Middlesex Regiment (The Die Hards) and fought throughout the campaigns in South Africa. As a result of his fine record, he was awarded the Queens South Africa Medal and promoted to the rank of Sergeant. It was from here that he finally left the army in 1910 after 24 years service with the colours. Returning home, William moved to Huthwaite with his family and worked for a while as a miner at the New Hucknall Colliery. By 1911 his health had been deteriorating for about a year and as a result he was now only able to work for short periods.

start of the First World War. Although now too old to fight in 1914, he volunteered as an army drill instructor and served in this capacity at Mill Hill Camp. William’s eldest son, Charles, joined the army and his second son, John, tried to join but was rejected as he was only just 16 at the time. William’s health finally gave out and the tuberculosis he had contracted during his army service finally caught up with him. He died on 16th April 1916 at the age of only 47. His son Charles, who was serving at Watford at the time, was given leave to attend the funeral. Sergeant William Hallam was given a full military funeral with the 3/4th West Riding Regiment from Clipstone Camp furnishing a band, firing party and bearer party. The band played Handels “Dead March” and Beethoven’s Funeral March during the journey from Sergeant Hallam’s home to the cemetery. The coffin was born shoulder high, draped with a Union Jack on which rested his uniform and medals. At the graveside the band played “Abide With Me” during the committal. Afterwards the rifle party fired a triple volley over the grave and six buglers played the Last Post. A fitting tribute to a well respected soldier with a very long and distinguished record.

William moved back to Mapperley where he became the caretaker for the Mapperley Institute (now a community centre) until the

I am researching the history of Mapperley and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail. com or post via NG5 magazine.
