Adjoining Properties:

Where do you stand when your neighbours are completing works? Many people in Nottinghamshire live in semi-detached properties, or terraced houses. Some people live in a detached home but they have a garden wall, or a garage or shed which is situated along the boundary with their neighbour’s land. If there is any kind of wall on the boundary between two homes, it is known as a party wall, and there are special rules which must be followed where party walls are concerned. Quite a few of our clients come to us seeking help and advice because their neighbours are building, or planning on building on their land very close to the boundary. It might be an extension, or a new garage, or it might be some structural work such as underpinning, but if your neighbour is doing this work you may have concerns about how it will affect the integrity of your property and the party wall. It’s important to remember that the Party Wall Act 1996 prevents your neighbour from completing any building work which may in any way affect the structure of a party wall, or involve fastening something to that wall. If your neighbour is planning to excavate land within 3 meters of a wall, or is likely to dig down deep below the ground within 6 meters of a party wall, they cannot complete this work without your permission. The way to test whether the work falls under the Act is to draw a diagram of the position of the excavation, and see whether, in terms of depth, it is deep enough to be at more than a 45 degree from the bottom of your wall.

If your neighbour follows the procedure set out in the Act, you will receive a written request for permission before any works have begun, in the form of a Party Wall Notice. This Notice must set out the proposed nature of the work, and give you plans so that you can see what is being done. Your neighbour must give you at least 14 days to respond and this is so that you can seek legal advice, or talk to a surveyor. You have a right to object, or seek clarification if you want to by serving a counter-notice. If there is a disagreement, both you and your neighbour can each speak to a surveyor and they will most likely put their heads together to produce a recommendation which should offer a solution to the problem. This enables you to seek the help of experts and come to a sensible agreement without needing to go to Court. If you would like further advice or help in relation to this issue, or any other boundary disputes, contact Lewis Hastie or Richard Hammond on 0800 096 0998.

pets ‘Please help me and my friends’ woofs Solo Readers may recall a Nottinghamshire animal rescue charity recently appealing for a permanent home for a friendly female dog who - from being rehomed, was homeless again. Despite best efforts, Solo is still waiting for that special someone and home – along with many other animals in the care of Animal Accident Rescue Unit. Aged nine years, this gentle-natured terriercross is playful and well-socialised. A true family dog, Solo likes plenty of company, routine and daily walks – and is already microchipped, spayed and vaccinated.

Are you that special someone for Solo - or know someone who is? If so discover more about her by calling 07946-545256 – leaving a message if necessary with your postcode and contact details for the adoption volunteer’s response - or email admin@aaru.org.uk. As is standard for the charity, her potential home would be pre-checked to ensure a good match. Solo’s care continues to be provided meanwhile by Animal Accident Rescue Unit – which is entirely run by volunteers spanning drivers, telephonists and fundraisers. This small charity, however, urgently needs more volunteers and of all roles, fostering is currently the most pressing: a truly rewarding role making a huge difference to an individual animal’s future! If you can offer even a short-term refuge to care for a cat or dog until Animal Accident Rescue Unit can rehome it, please contact Chris on 0115-956 3799 leaving a message if necessary, with your contact details - or email admin@aaru.org.uk. Space in your home and heart are all that are needed – along with reliability, common-sense plus cat or dog care experience – though advice and guidance are given. Fostered cats need a safe and secure haven, as they are not allowed outdoors. For general information and all other matters, please call the charity’s lifeline number 0115-932 1555.

Hot Air Balloon Club looking for new members

Nottingham & Derby Hot Air Balloon Club was started by a group of enthusiasts in 1978 and has been a regular sight around Notts and Derbys for 35 years. It is believed to be unique in the UK as the only balloon club with membership open to the general public. The club is a non-proft making sports club run by volunteers. Members get a chance to get involved in all aspects of flying balloons. No previous experience is needed as the club runs regular members training evenings and also other social events. We own two complete balloons and mainly fly locally from 6 different launch sites. In previous years members have attended balloon meets in the USA, India, France, Ireland and even Australia. In 2005 we flew our balloon across the English Channel for a charity event. In July 2011 we attended a meet at Chambley in France and helped set a new world record for the largest simultaneous launch of hot air balloons. The club’s balloon has been featured live on the BBC Breakfast Show and was also once used for an episode of the ITV drama Boon filmed in the grounds of Nottingham Castle. We sometimes get asked to inflate our balloons at local shows and fetes and also at wedding receptions. We are currently looking to recruit some extra members so we can fly more often. For enquiries about club membership telephone 0115 8541028.

Residents invited to help monitor traffic speed in Gedling

A Community Speed Watch scheme organised by Gedling Borough Council and Nottinghamshire Police is calling for local residents to get involved to reduce speeding in their communities. The aim is to encourage drivers to adhere to the speed limit. Nottinghamshire Police will provide training and equipment so volunteers can monitor speeding in their areas. If drivers are caught speeding, letters are sent to registered keepers of offending vehicles asking for their help in keeping speeds down. Persistent offenders’ details will be passed onto local police for targeted enforcement by the volunteers monitoring the speeds. Volunteers must be over 18 years of age and be available for a minimum of one hour per week. The locations for monitoring are chosen by the community, based on people’s experience and knowledge of the area. For more information on the scheme or to volunteer, people should contact: Inspector Andrew Knight or Constable Phil Anelay at Arnold Police Station on 101, extension 853 4161.

A Positive inspiration at Porchester Juniors!

Guides’ Charity Event Brings in Underwear for Africa

Students at Porchester Junior School have had an inspirational week in March taking lessons with Andy Cope of ‘The Art of Brilliance’. The ethos behind Andy’s teachings for both adults and children is to encourage a positive and problem solving attitude to overcome obstacles, enabling everyone to reach their full potential in life. Billy Housden a Year 5 Student at Porchester Junior School really engaged with the lessons, he said, “I’ve enjoyed today because it was really fun and it makes you feel really positive in yourself.” Mr Cope asked students to set life goals and demonstrated how to achieve them. Kizzy Bird, a Year 5 student said she had enjoyed the lessons and especially the ‘Brain Test’, and that her goal was to be a nursery nurse when she is older. Mr Cope said, “The Art of Being Brilliant is all about the science of happiness, positivity and confidence. At Porchester, we’ve delivered it to the whole of year 5 and are then empowering them to take the messages across their school and the local community. The simple truth is that happy kids are better learners! The aim is to go beyond the syllabus. We want Porchester to turn out happy, ht: Kizzy confident, wellh left to rig Photograp Cope, Kirsty Rose, educated kids who y en d n sd y Hou Bird, A hill and Bill make a massive Sam Town r 5 students). (Y contribution to society”. Echoing that philosophy, Mr Graham Cullen, Head Teacher at Porchester Junior School said, “These days many schools place too much emphasis on test results. Although these are important, schools have a responsibility to help pupils learn to set goals, manage emotions and become resilient individuals who can make relationships with others. I believe that this is what brings lifetime success and happiness.”

Guides Elle, Iman and Shana, 10, at the Clothes Swap for Climate A huge stack of underwear destined for women and children in Africa was collected by members of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire at a charity event held in Woodthorpe in March. Run by the 1st and 1st A Woodthorpe Guide Units, the ‘Clothes Swap for Climate’ was in aid of Smalls for All, a charity which supplies underwear to children and women in Africa. A collection point accepted donations of new pants, vests, socks and tights throughout the evening, as well as good-as-new bras. A clothes swap and a bookstall run by the Guides together with mini-pamper sessions by students from New College Nottingham and the Body Shop raised over £100 towards the cost of transporting the underwear to Africa. ‘We all had great fun and were delighted with the amount of underwear we collected,’ says Guider Sally Smith. ‘Our girls welcomed over 80 mostly female guests on the night, including their mothers, grannies, sisters and friends, so it seemed very apt that we were helping to promote personal dignity amongst girls and young women elsewhere in the world. Decent underwear is so important when it comes to self-respect.’

Gedling introduces School Council Pack Gedling Borough Council is encouraging primary schools in the borough to teach children about democracy by establishing school councils using a specially designed pack. The initiative has been trialled at Westdale Infant School in Mapperley, where Gedling councillor Kathryn Fox has worked with teachers and pupils alike to develop the School Councils Pack that is now available to all schools in the Borough. The pack includes advice on how to set up a School Council, ideas for running an election, what individual members of the School Council do, and the benefits of having a School Council. Councillor Fox, who is Portfolio Holder for Community Development, said: “I have young children myself, and my inspiration for this initiative was that children should be helped to realise that they have a voice to bring about positive change in their school and community. “I also wanted to introduce and explore the concept of voting within the school environment, to encourage children to be part of the democratic process and to understand how this parallels with the role of local councillors and MPs.” Gedling Borough Council is now contacting all infant, junior and primary schools in the Borough to see if they would like a pack. Schools who get involved and set up their own School Council will also be invited to Gedling Civic Centre to have a tour of the council chamber and civic areas, and meet councillors for a question and answer session.

Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People celebrates the Year of the Snake with the launch of the 5th Nottingham Riverside Festival Dragon Boat Challenge! To celebrate Chinese New Year and the Year of the Snake, Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People has joined with Gable Events to launch the fifth Nottingham Riverside Festival Dragon Boat Challenge. The 2013 Challenge takes place on Sunday 4th August as part of the annual Riverside Festival and is one of the largest and most eagerly anticipated team events in the region. Up to 50 crews representing companies, organisations, clubs and groups of friends from all over the East Midlands are expected to battle it out over the 200m race course on the River Trent at Victoria Embankment. They will all be seeking to knock South Nottingham College off their pedestal as reigning champions whilst raising muchneeded funds for the Hospice. The dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment are provided and each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races. Teams and spectators also benefit from

being part of one of the region’s largest family festivals with a bustling fair and vibrant mix of music, dance, crafts and food from around the world, staged by Nottingham City Council. Carol Lester, Director of Challenge organisers, Gable Events, adds; “The Challenge is a great chance to try something completely different, enjoy a fabulous day out and raise money for Rainbows. It is also a fantastic team building opportunity what better way to get to know what makes your colleagues and competitors tick? August may seem a long way off but we are expecting the Dragon Boat Challenge to be extremely popular this year so we strongly urge teams to sign up early in order to secure a place”. For further information and an entry form please visit: www.dragonboatfestivals.co.uk/ nottingham or call Gable Events on 01780 470 718.

THREE WAYS WITH CHICKEN

Quite often I buy a whole chicken which can easily provide my family with three delicious meals and plenty of stock for freezing and making into soups and stews. These recipes are equally delicious with left over roast chicken, however I find poaching the bird keeps the meat moist. For a 2kg chicken (£7.40 from Beechdale Butchers)- place it in a large saucepan and add 1 carrot, 1 onion (halved), 10 peppercorns and 2 bay leaves. Cover with water, bring the lidded pan to the boil and simmer for about 1hr 30 mins. Remove the chicken and cool. Drain the cooking liquid. This is great stock and can be frozen in plastic soup containers. Then get all the meat off the bones and divide up for the recipes.

When Mr Choudhury called and invited the ng magazine team to sample the new menu at Sitar we jumped at the chance! Sunday is now buffet day. From 4pm until 10pm for a very reasonable £8.95 for adults and £6.95 for children you can fill your boots. The starters include samosas, onion bhaji’s and chunks of delicious chicken tikka. With mixed veg, lamb jalfrezi, chicken korma, chicken tikka bhuna and lamb curry to choose from for the main course. Actually you don’t have to choose...just have a bit of everything! Insulting the Army by Bob Massey On Wednesday 27 March 2013 the Home Secretary, Theresa May, said the Government will accept a House of Lords amendment to remove the word 'insulting’ from Section 5 of the Public Order Act. The amendment had been promoted in the House of Lords by Lord Dear, a former HM Inspector of Constabulary after A ComRes poll commissioned last year by the RS5 campaign showed that 62 % of MPs believed it should not be the business of government to outlaw “insults.” This change in the law has come a bit late for six men from Calverton. In fact over 200 years too late! In 1804 the act was still on the criminal register and was taken very seriously indeed. The Calverton men in question were arrested and brought before the quarter sessions of the county of Nottingham at the end of April 1804. All six were charged with insulting the Corp of Nottingham Volunteer Rangers. It was alleged that these insults (which are not mentioned in detail in the press reports) were both" frequent" and "aggravated". The judiciary decided that they were to be made an example of. Since this was both a time of war in Europe (Spain has just joined Napoleon's war as an ally against the British), and with unrest back in England, feelings and fears were running high and near panic was in the air.

There was no police force at the time and the local militia, like the Nottingham Volunteer Rangers, were used in times of unrest to prevent riots and deal with most security duties as well as home defence. The insulting of the Corp was therefore viewed as seriously as a physical attack on the troops themselves. It was an insult on the reign of law and order and usurping of the proper place and position of the ordinary working man of the time. The Corp’s authority was being threatened and the local magistrates were having none of it; clamp down quick and hard before more trouble looms was the sentiment. The magistrates were also local land owners and business men as were the juries so this sent out a clear message to their tenants and workers about what they could expect if they stepped over the mark. On Friday 27th April 1804 five of the Calverton men were sentenced to 6 months imprisonment and the sixth man, named as the ring leader of the group, had his sentence increased to 8 months. All of the men had to serve their sentences in the county jail. They also had to give an undertaking via a security to exhibit good behaviour for a further twelve months .The incident was reported not only in the local press but also taken up by other papers around the country. It was reported as far away as Lancaster in the Lancaster Gazette thus serving as a lesson to all who read the reports.

I am researching the history of the area and would be pleased to hear from any one with details of the people and places now long gone. Email:bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG3

From Inspector Simon Allardice... I’d like to start by letting you know that this area is now a safer place than it was 12 months ago. Our end of year figures for 2012/13 (April 2012 – March 2013) show there were 591 less victims of crime in our area over the last twelve months, which amounts to a 14.8 percent reduction across St Ann’s, Mapperley and Sneinton. This includes serious offences such as burglary, robbery and vehicle crime that were down by almost 20 per cent across the same areas. Despite these figures we will never be complacent and will continue to work hard to make NG3 a safer place to live, work and visit. Since receiving reports of antisocial behaviour in the Wells Road area of St Ann’s we have worked with partner agencies on a combination of engagement, dispersal and enforcement activities to combat the problem and make sure people feel safe to use local shops and are not intimidated by groups’ or individual’s behaviour. In particular residents reported being concerned about groups of youths hanging around local shops and causing noise,

antisocial behaviour and drug dealing. A new CCTV camera has now been in place for several months and we have seen a significant reduction in ASB and drug dealing reports since this became a local priority. We have also been working with colleagues from Nottingham City Council’s Community Protection team and other partners to address concerns about groups gathering in the Alison Walk area, which had seen a rise in robbery offences. There has been an increase in police patrols in the area and I am pleased to report there have not been any further offences for several months. Vehicle crime has recently been an increasing problem in the St Ann’s area but this has not been restricted to any particular location. My team is doing lots of work to quickly address this problem and several arrests have already been made. I would encourage all local residents to take care to ensure their vehicles are always locked and secure and that valuable items are not left on display which may attract the attention of a thief.
