faith Bible Reading and the Gospel of Matthew - part 3 In the last editorial we learned that the New Testament identified ‘the seed’ of Abraham with Jesus Christ [Galatians 3:16]. Given that the New Testament contains the evidence that Jesus was raised from the dead and now lives forever to die no more, we begin to understand how the inheritance of the land promised to Abraham and his seed, can be ‘forever’, that is lived in and enjoyed in reality. The guarantee of ‘forever’ is the resurrection of Jesus and the assurance given by the angels of his second coming at his ascension. We will come later in our series to see how Abraham and his multiple descendents can enjoy the inheritance of the land ‘forever’.
Now we must go to the Gospel record of the conception of Jesus to find the link we are looking for between Abraham and David, and Jesus Christ. Every Christmas when the birth of Jesus is celebrated there is one particular Bible reading which makes this crucial link. It’s in the gospel of Luke. There we are told: And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end’ [chapter 1:31-33 - NKJV]. How is the link made? What do these verses teach and why are they important? The angels’ message to the Virgin Mary revealed startling details. More on this in the next issue, God willing.

For most people, Christmas is a time for fun and general merriment with the family, but for the same reasons it can also be quite a stressful occasion. The countdown to Christmas is well and truly under way and we have no doubt you will be busy writing your lists for Santa and buying presents for your friends and family. While you are out soaking up the festive atmosphere and spending your hard earned cash please take a moment to think about personal safety and the security of your vehicles and property. Christmas shopping is stressful enough without having to do it all over again because a thief has stolen gifts from your car. Every year, numerous motorists fall victim to this type of crime, whether they are halfway through a shopping trip, dropped their bags off at the car and gone back for round two, or returned home from a shopping trip and not yet unloaded the bags from the car. Don’t learn the hard way – remember to lock all your car doors, make sure windows are closed and under no circumstances leave items on display when your car is unattended. In the coming weeks you may well be out in town, at a Christmas party, or toasting the festive season with your friends and family. We want you to enjoy yourself but remain safe, so we would ask you to plan your night out, drink responsibly, and don't leave your drinks unattended.
If you feel the atmosphere getting heated, and it’s not the dinner in the oven, take some time out. Make a snowman in the garden, or if it’s not a white Christmas, play with all your new gadgets and gismos. While we want everyone to have an enjoyable and safe festive period, we will take robust action to remove anyone from the street who is engaging in inappropriate or violent behaviour. No one wants to spend Christmas in police custody with the knowledge that your family and friends are celebrating without you. Make sure you are kept up to date with what is happening in the area next year by signing up to Nottinghamshire Police’s Neighbourhood Alert system. This is an automated service that sends out free updates about local crime trends and incidents by email and text. It is a great way to be kept in the loop and I would encourage everyone to sign up by visiting w w w. n e i g h b o u r h o o d a l e r t . co.uk.

We run classes in the afternoons after school, together with Saturday mornings and can also provide classes tailored to help students prepare for GCSE and A Levels.. We begin with a free, no obligation assessment and the tutoring is at affordable and competitive rates. A national house-builder has come to the aid of youngsters in Gedling by completely refurbishing their dilapidated headquarters free of charge. The building on Willow Lane used by the 1st Gedling Scout & Guide Group has been in a poor state of repair for some time, with missing plaster in the meeting room and a leaky roof causing part of the ceiling to collapse. The ancient toilets were putting the youngsters off using them and hall users claim the kitchen was already second-hand when it was installed over 50 years ago. Taylor Wimpey, who are currently building houses off Spring Lane in Mapperley, offered to upgrade the building by installing a new kitchen, plumbing, tiling and carpeting. Modern toilet facilities now mean the groups will be able to accept disabled members for the first time, whilst the refurbishment also included redecoration inside and out, replacement guttering and the installation of a smart new external sign. Seven uniformed groups use the premises on a regular basis, including members of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s Rainbow, Brownie, Guide and Ranger Units. As the groups started back after the summer break, parents and children alike were impressed by the changes to the building. For details on membership and volunteering opportunities within Girlguiding Nottinghamshire, visit www. girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk or contact county headquarters via secretary@ girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk

Exciting research project for families in Nottingham Do you have a child aged 2 years 9 months to 4 years 6 months? Does your child constantly move around, fidget and wriggle, not listen to you or talk too much? Is this behaviour difficult for you to manage at home during meal and play times or watching TV, and when you are out and about, shopping, or visiting? Researchers from the University of Nottingham are inviting local families to take part in an innovative research project with the chance to participate in parenting programmes designed to help you manage your child’s behaviour and improve family life. This will take just 1 to 2 hours each week for a period of 12 weeks.
Our next parenting programmes will begin in January 2013 To find out more and take part in a short interview to see if your family might benefit from participating, contact 07881 280369 or email Elvira.Perez@nottingham.ac.uk To advertise call 0115 926 9777 or email: info@ng3.org.uk

Junior Triathlon Sessions for kids aged 8-14 Following a successful summer of sport Absolute Triathlon Club based at Southglade Leisure Centre in Bestwood are now holding weekly training sessions for children aged 8 – 14 years. The triathlon sessions take place every Thursday evening from 5pm until 7.15 pm and cover swim, bike and run training. All children, including beginners, are welcome to come for a free trial however they must be able to swim a minimum of 100 mtrs without stopping and ride a bike. Head Coach Steve Lloyd commented “Triathlon has seen a surge in popularity over the last few years and took centre stage at the London 2012 Olympics where British brothers Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee took Gold and Bronze respectively. The sport is great for kids as the fun bit is training across the 3 different sports of swimming, biking and running.” The sessions form part of Nottingham’s successful Absolute Triathlon Club launched in 2009 and has subsequently raft of awards including the Nottingham Club of the Year. Hello Ladies, I hope that you’re all well and have managed to enjoy our English summer months! (Short but sweet) Well, now it’s time to do some REAL shopping because if there’s one thing that we can be sure of, it’s that you’ll get plenty of wear from your Autumn/Winter wardrobe! So what is on trend for the coming months? Lots of Blues.... Navy blue, Royal blue all shades of blue. I think blue is quite a neglected colour - it’s not been a fashionable colour for a long time but is actually as versatile as black. Navy mixes and matches with most colours, it looks great with winter white, reds and even all the taupe, rusty colours that are also very popular this season. Textures.... a must have is leather/ leatherette teamed with tweeds, angora, cashmere or any great wool textures. I wasn’t quite sure how this look would go in Boutique 11 so I just bought a little taste of it .... I’ve already sold out and re-stocked; jeggings, trousers skirts and tunic dresses in leatherette! I can hear some of you out there already saying...”I’m far too old for that look”. Please let me stress once again ... it’s not what you wear but how you wear it and what you team it with!!!! A perfectly fitting leather/ leatherette tunic or skirt looks fantastic teamed with a lovely mohair sweater or good quality long sleeved t-shirt, a great scarf and some lovely warm 80 denier coloured tights this is a fabulous look on most ladies!
For the not so daring .... A great pair of quality jeggings teamed with a wow factor long sparkly chunky sweater, some flat loafers/brogues or boots and you will be right on trend. Long/short pretty much any length waistcoats or gillet are also in fashion, maybe with a little fur (not real) or leather trim. I personally love sleeveless jackets as they’re still really warm but don’t make you feel restricted. A note for my existing customers (and you know who you are) ... I’m trying REALLY hard to get some furry, fingerless gloves again this year as I couldn’t get enough of them last year! Also the fur boot cuffs which pop around the top of any boot to TOTALLY change the look and give the impression that you’ve spent a fortune on a new pair of trendy boots. Boots are coming in all different shapes, lengths and heel sizes - everything from beautiful flat riding boots to black patent dress boots, to stressed looking cowboy boots to bright red with lots of fur ski boots (in store now). For those of you that haven’t yet made it up the Boutique 11 please come along and take a look, you’ll find a great variety of sizes and prices for ALL ages. I really mean that! My customers are daughters, mothers and grandmothers all going out with lovely, lovely clothes that they not only feel trendy in but suit their age and size! Hopefully see you soon. Happy shopping and be safe in those coming winter months Penny x Boutique 11 0115 960 2006

One step closer for a Gedling Country Park Gedling residents could soon have some extra open space to enjoy as plans for a country park in Gedling take shape. Gedling Borough Council has long since had an ambition to turn the land of the former Gedling Colliery into a country park and after some careful negotiation there may be an opportunity to make it happen. The Council is working with UK Coal, who owns the site, and an agreement in principle has been reached to transfer the ownership of the land from them to the Council. Work is now being planned to carry out a range of surveys to assess the condition of the land to see if it’s suitable and to plan the potential layout of a country park on the site. Pending the results of these land surveys, it is possible that the park could open to the public in the spring of 2013, once work to create a car park and pathways around the edge of the land has been completed. After this initial opening, the Council would draw on the various funding sources it has identified, potentially totalling £1 million, to develop the land into a country park. Although this will be done in a phased approach over several years, residents could expect to see a better path network, a children’s play area, interpretation boards and even a visitors’ centre over time. Councillor John Clarke, Leader of Gedling Borough Council, said: “We are really excited to be working with UK Coal on the transfer of this important site to the Council. Although we’re only in the early stages of the process, we are delighted at the prospect of another country park in Gedling for residents and visitors to enjoy.”

A Lifeline for Animals in Need
Animal Accident Rescue Unit is a transport service for sick, injured or vulnerable animals and birds. It provides both transport to a vet surgery, arranging for their treatment and caring for them in foster homes until either their owner can be traced or new homes can be found. The Charity has no central base and is run entirely by volunteers working from their own homes. It has taken in so many cats over the last few months, it desperately needs new fosterers who can provide a temporary home for one of our rescued cats. If you think you can help, please ring the Recruitment Officer on 0115-956 3799 (recruitment calls only).
Volunteer Drivers and Phone Operators Needed!
Local Nottingham-based charity Animal Accident Rescue Unit is seeking volunteer drivers with their own car who have a couple of hours a week to spare during the daytime, evening or weekend. The charity needs help to transport rescued animals to and from vet practices and foster homes. Additionally, reliable people are needed to take calls from the public who require help with animals they find in distress. All roles are based from home. To learn more on how you can make a difference to vulnerable animals, please ring the Recruitment Officer on 0115-956 3799 (recruitment calls only). Many other volunteering roles are also available. Animal Accident Rescue Unit lifeline telephone number for dealing with animals in distress is 0115-932 1555. For non-urgent queries and information, email us at admin@ aaru.org.uk, visit www.animalaccident.org. uk, or by post to PO Box 5414, Burton Joyce, Nottingham NG14 5DT. Overhaul of Careless Driving Penalties Balancing the Scales of Justice The government consultation into its ideas for careless driving and other fixed penalty offences closed last month and the Department for Transport is currently sifting through the responses received. Careless driving is an offence related to general poor driving and includes such as tailgating, failing to look properly and sudden braking, and is defined as driving that falls below what is expected of a competent and careful driver. The argument goes that prosecuting drivers for careless driving is costly and time-consuming, and drivers could be better dealt with at the roadside by way of a fixed penalty notice instead. At present, careless driving offences go to court and the penalties can vary depending upon the extent of poor driving. A momentary lapse of concentration or misjudgement at low speed may mean 3 – 4 points whereas an overtaking manoeuvre at speed resulting in collision of vehicles may mean 7 – 9 points, or the court can consider disqualification. However, the government’s plan will give the police the opportunity to become judge and jury at the roadside when issuing fixed penalty notices, which throws up concerns for both lawyers and magistrates who know better than most how careless driving offences are not always black and white. Who can honestly say that handing over this considerable responsibility to a lone officer to judge the standard of a motorist’s driving is one with which they are comfortable? The system is already heavily weighted against the driver, and potentially this makes things even more unfair and difficult to fight. Perhaps the more important question is whether or not enforcement will be increased as a result of the proposals. According to the consultation, the government maintains that when using a mobile phone at the wheel was introduced as a fixed penalty in 2003, survey data collected showed the proportion of drivers of cars, vans and lorries observed using hand-held phones reduced. You would not think that looking at the number of drivers you regularly see at the wheel with mobile phone in hand nowadays. Similarly, for careless driving, the system demands a greater police presence, but this seems unlikely given the planned recruitment cuts prompted by slashing police budgets. For advice or representation in connection with driving offences, please contact our Motorist Defence Team at Rothera Dowson on

GIVE YOUR TURKEY A TREAT AND IMPRESS YOUR MOTHER-IN-LAW AT CHRISTMAS ADVISES PROFESSIONAL OVEN VALETER
Ovenu, the Nottingham-based professional oven valeting business, is encouraging local people to give their appliances an early Christmas present, with a pre-festive season valet. Ovenu’s professional valeters ensure that ovens operate to their full potential, more efficiently and for longer. At Christmas, in particular, when families do a lot of entertaining, there is nothing more embarrassing when the mother-in-law sees smoke, setting of the fire alarm, coming from an oven required to work overtime! It is also important to keep ovens in top condition for health and safety reasons. For example, spilt oils and cooking fats are two of the main causes of oven fires and an unclean oven can also be a breeding ground for germs. The Ovenu valeting process is unusual because it involves dismantling key components of an
oven such as the door, interior panels, fan and shelves. The parts are placed into design-registered equipment, which uses non caustic products to clean the oven parts. The whole process takes around three hours and leaves the oven, hob and exterior in immaculate and safe condition. Peter Bell from Ovenu, which recently celebrated its tenth anniversary in business, said: “It is really important to ensure ovens are kept in the best condition to make sure they work to their full potential. I think people can give their turkey a treat and impress their mother-in-law by making sure their oven is immaculate for Christmas morning!” For more information contact Peter Bell at Ovenu on: 01158787048 or visit www.ovenu. co.uk

C Maxwell Tylden-Wright by Bob Massey On the 19th May 1900, the Nottingham Guardian announced the sudden death of C. Maxwell Tylden-Wright at Mapperley Hall on Lucknow Avenue. He was the eldest son of Mr C C C Tylden-Wright who resided at Mapperley Hall, the family seat of the Wright family for many years. Mr Tylden-Wright senior was Steetley Colliery the Managing Director of the Shireoaks C o l l i e r y C o m p a n y, formed in 1867. Like many businessmen in those days he was also a Nottinghamshire County Councillor. Maxwell was born in 1865 and followed his father into the coal business, taking charge of the Steetley branch of the colliery. In January 1886 Maxwell joined the 4th Notts Rifle Volunteers Regiment as a Sub Lieutenant passing out from the military college at Aldershot in May 1887. He was then appointed Captain of the 4th Notts and took over command in 1891; an appointment he held until May 1895 when ill health forced him to retire from the company and from his job at the colliery. Maxwell was well respected by both the regiment and his work colleagues and received memento’s and good wishes for the future from both organisations. A move to South Africa followed. The climate was beneficial to Maxwell’s condition (he was suffering from TB) and he took up the position of Colliery Manager
in Dundee KwaZulu-Natal, a new town that had only been formed 12 years earlier when coal had been found. The town was named after the home town of it’s founder Peter Smith, who had gone there from Scotland in 1882. Maxwell return to England only briefly to marry Helen Baines, the daughter of Mr L.T Baines of Bawtry Hall. He then returned to his duties in South Africa where he remained until the outbreak of the Boer war in 1899. He was captured by the Boers but his wife and family were lucky enough to escape. Maxwell was kept a prisoner for several months and he described his treatment by the Boers as anything but gentle. This greatly affected his already delicate health. On one occasion he was transported in a coal truck for 12 hours packed together with others. They were not given any food or drink and the train stopped every 2 or 3 miles so that his captors could shoot at anyone they found. Maxwell was eventually released and invalided home to England arriving on the 10th February 1900. For the next 5 weeks he lived in Devon until returning to Mapperley Hall where he subsequently died. He left a wife and two young children and was buried at his request near his home at Shireoakes near Worksop.
I am researching the history of the area and would be pleased to hear from anyone with details of the people and places now long gone. Email bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG3.
