decoration ideas, dreading a last-minute, stressful dash around town, consider having a rainy (or maybe snowy!) craft day with the kids. It’s a great way to spend time together, it costs next to nothing and they’ll be excited about giving presents (not just receiving them!). Here are our top Christmassy makes for toddlers upwards… 1. Bake Christmas cookies

A firm favourite with kids, and with sweet-toothed friends and family who receive them! You could even take the kids along to a local bakery for icing inspiration! Pick up some Christmas-shaped cookie cutters from supermarkets, eBay or Lakeland and the BBC Good Food website has lots of yummy recipes.

2. Potato-printed wrapping paper

A classic and affordable craft, cut a potato in half and carefully cut out a simple design eg a star or Christmas tree. Buy poster paint and plain paper from a craft supplier and let your kids design their own wrapping paper and gift tags – they’ll make a big impact under the tree.

3. Hand (and foot!) printed cards

You can’t have a craft session without a bit of mess! Little ones will love dipping their feet in green paint and adding a footprint to a blank card. Add three finger-printed red ‘berries’ so it looks like mistletoe hanging down, and caption it ‘under the mistletoes!’ Alternatively, handprints of green paint overlapping in a circle make a lovely Christmas wreath card.

4. Jam jar candle holders

Simple and effective, empty glass jars make lovely candle holders. Children can decorate the outside by adding glue and then sticking sequins, glitter or tissue paper squares, or tying their favourite Christmas ribbon around the top. Add a candle and watch the light shine through beautifully. And if your children are too young for real candles, you can pick up battery-operated tea-lights – safe and still bright!

Happy Christmas crafting!

Prosecco: A Joy of Life! There are many producers of sparkling, aromatic, prosecco wine. For this quest I searched for a company that produces a range of high quality prosecco wines, with impressive bottle presentations. Bottega has a very interesting history, both during the 20th century and into the 21st century. The eye-catching bottles and a great number of the wines are award-winning. The bottles are created by artisan crafts people and are really distinguishable. From their prosecco range I found the following to be very impressive. Bottega Poeti Prosecco (DOC) is fresh, fragrant and has a floral bouquet. This wine is a very popular, dry production and favoured by many. Bottega Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore (DOCG) Extra Dry is another poets’ wine which is also very popular. Having a brilliant straw-yellow colour, too, this fresh and fragrant wine graces many dining occasions, regularly. Bottega Prosecco (DOC) Biologico Extra Dry is often chosen and has many devotees. This organic production is, again, a brilliant straw-yellow colour. Very fine, fresh, fruity and delicate is how I would describe this, much sought-after, prosecco. Bottega Prosecco (DOC) Fundum I found to be a splendid dry production, that has plenty of fruits, to please. The mouthfeel and palate sensation is fresh, with a good finish. Gold Poeti Prosecco (DOC) is a further very classy production from Bottega. Fresh, aromatic and very impressive, this wine comes in a magnificent gold-coloured bottle. Again, a fruity bouquet prevails, which leads, enticingly, to the wonderful mouthfeel. The palate is treated to a sensation that is impressively pleasant and memorable. The glamour of the bottle presentation adds to the pleasures of this production, which is extremely popular for special occasions and also makes a really wonderful gift. Prosecco wines, having a persistent and fine perlage, are perfect for apÊritifs and excellent to pair with starters, also fish, seafood and

white meats. Prosecco and other wines, including grappa, plus liqueurs, along with a range of other products, are all made with much knowledge, love and devotion, so the finished Bottega productions are of the highest quality and quite exceptional. www.bottegaspa.com As always, Enjoy!

Sensational Bill’s

by Cat Hedges

B

ill’s started with humble beginnings as a tiny grocery shop just off the high street. A few years later after moving to new premises it was hit by a flood in 2000! Not being deterred Bill’s opened again but this time with a café and became a bit of a sensation. The restaurant itself has a modern, rustic feel with bunches of dried chilli’s hanging from the ceiling and shelves containing Bill’s jams and bottles of dressings for sale. We were greeted by a very friendly waitress who really looked after us. A great touch was when she brought the kids starter out with the drinks – a blessing when you have a very hungry child. We chose wild mushroom soup £5.75, crumbed halloumi sticks £5.95, golden fried pork sesame dumplings £5.95 & dakkochi chicken skewers £6.50 to start. All delicious and very fresh. For mains we had macaroni cheese £9.95 braised lamb shank £14.95 served with fresh mint, parsley and a red wine gravy, it fell off the bone and was devine, a 10oz sirloin steak £18.50 and a 14oz ribeye £21.95 both cooked to perfection and very tasty. Then my favourite bit, for desserts we chose warm scones, our waitress

very kindly let us have them from the teatime menu £4.95, melting chocolate bombe £6.95 served with a hot caramel sauce which was poured over the bombe at the table to melt the top – great fun. Warm chocolate brownie £5.95 and warm cinnamon doughnuts £5.95. All yummy and finished our meal off perfectly. The kids menu is really good value at £6.95 for 3 courses and a drink, starting with crispy tortilla chips, Harry then chose little Bills hamburger , which was not little but he polished it off no problem, and ice cream for pudding. All in all a great family meal and I will definitely be returning to try the chocolate bombe for myself!

Christmas Puddings Well, the festive season is upon us, time to stop worrying about the calories and instead indulge ourselves in the treats and sweets associated with Christmas. Around the world, where Christmas is celebrated, the holiday season is a time for traditional cakes, bakes and puddings. In France the “Bûche de Noël”, a classic chocolate covered Yule log cake is a Christmas centrepiece, in Germany “pfeffernüsse” cookies served from the 6th December, are covered in icing sugar and full of a mix of warm spices. “Struffoli” in Italy are little nuggets of fried dough with lemon zest served on Christmas Eve, and of course we are all now familiar with the traditional Pannettone. In Sweden, a classic rice pudding with cinnamon

is staple part of the festive menu, along with sweet gooey “lussekatter” buns. Our own traditional Christmas Pudding is believed to date back to the 14th century when it was a porridge of beef and mutton with raisins, currants, prunes, wines and spices, over time it evolved into the plum pudding we know today, despite being banned in 1664 by the Puritans as a “bad custom”. Even though it enjoys a long history, not everyone enjoys this rich fruit pudding, so here are few alternative ideas for festive treats, if you fancy a change this holiday. Have a lovely Christmas, the diet can start in January!

Christmas “Mess” Ingredients • 200g Greek yoghurt • 300ml double cream • 2tbsp lemon curd • 250g frozen mixed berries • 2tbsp cassis (optional) • 1 small pinch cinnamon • 4 individual meringues (use the good ones you get from delis/ farmshops or make your own) Method 1. In small saucepan gently heat the frozen berries, sugar and cinnamon until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat, add cassis and set aside to cool. 2. Whip the double cream and yoghurt until it holds its shape, drizzle through the lemon curd. 3. Break up the meringues into a bowl then spoon over half the cream then half the berries and repeat. Serve straight away.

Satsumas in a Caramel Syrup Ingredients • 75g caster sugar • 40ml fresh orange juice • 6 whole, peeled satsumas, pith removed (to remove pith, dunk peeled satsuma for a few seconds in boiling water and allow to cool) Method 1. (Take extreme care when boiling sugar, do not overheat) Put the sugar and 75ml warm water into a pan. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves and then allow to bubble gently until you have a golden caramel. As soon as the sugar is starting to brown remove from heat and allow to cool a little. Add the juice (stand well back, it will spit! - I used a splatter guard), stir gently until smooth. 2. In a large bowl pour the syrup over the satsumas. Allow to cool, serve with a qood quality vanilla ice-cream.

Dutch Baby Oven Pancakes with roasted Plums Ingredients • 20g butter • 2 large eggs • 100ml single cream • 120ml milk • 100g plain flour • 30g golden caster sugar • Half tablespoon cinnamon Roast Plums • 3 plums • Juice of half an orange • 2 tablespoons golden caster sugar Method 1. Preheat oven to 200C, heat up a baking sheet 2. Halve, destone and slice plums into wedges, place in a roasting tin, squeeze over the juice and toss them in the sugar. Roast for 20 mins until soft. 3. To make the batter, whisk together the eggs, cream, milk and flour until smooth 4. Melt butter in the cast iron frying pans, and then divide and pour in the batter. Place in the oven on the baking sheet and cook for 20 mins until golden brown and puffed up. 5. Serve sprinkled with sugar, cinnamon and plums.

Healthy Eating is for Life,

not just for Christmas

A

t this time of year, women en masse will start dieting to fit into that festive little black dress. Come January, the diet season resumes with fervour as we try to shift the weight gained from the Christmas excess. Sound familiar?

The madness is that diets don’t work for most of us - 95% will re-gain the weight and more within a year. Diets invariably make the problem worse, and can often be hazardous to our health! In fact diets are counter-productive; when we restrict calories, our bodies perceive starvation. This causes three responses: tiredness, so we conserve energy; hunger, so we prioritise food finding and slower metabolism, so we manage on fewer calories. Psychologically, humans are hard-wired to resist restrictions. What is forbidden becomes more attractive and can lead to obsessing about food. Diets tend to be all or nothing. One slip-up and we see it as total failure, often triggering a binge. The yoyo cycle starts again.

To succeed, we need to see health and, as a result, looking and feeling good as the goal rather than weight loss. By making permanent, sustainable changes to eating and lifestyle, weight loss becomes inevitable. Eating mindfully means being constantly aware of food choices. If we think about the impact of food on health, then we’re likely to make better choices. Mindful eating gives us control. Rather than grabbing and consuming chocolate without thinking, consciously consider “it’s full of sugar, damaging to health and won’t help weight loss”. Then resist, or else enjoy it as a treat. There’s no failure, no diet derailment and therefore less likelihood of having an all-out binge. Move on with your motivation and confidence intact and make the next choice a healthy one. Mindful eating takes considerable practice, but taking back control of eating and health means liberation, not deprivation. Shortened life expectancy, ill health, weight gain and depression due to poor food choices is the real deprivation. Cycle Through the Alps in Carlton and Arnold!

Gedling Borough Council has nearly doubled its fitness class time table with an upgrade in new technology that will allow customers to choose from hundreds of different virtual classes on demand. The new WEXER TV screens and high definition projector fitted in Carlton Forum and Redhill leisure centres lets customers do anything from group cycling to Pilates at a time that suits them. Customers will have more freedom and choice over what exercises they want to do and will no longer have to worry about classes being cancelled last minute. Leader of the Council Councillor John Clarke said; “I’m really impressed with the new technology, it’s easy to use and there’s something here for everyone. We’re constantly working to upgrade and improve our centers to offer as much to customers as possible.” The virtual sessions offer hundreds of classes at the touch of a button, including traditional classes from aerobics, yoga and group cycling to a surf board workout or a contemporary dance class. Customers can also tailor the class to the length and intensity that suits them allowing customers to do a quick warm up before hitting the gym or ten minutes cool down after a workout session.

Arnold Leisure Centre Re-Opens

After a three month closure for essential maintenance and repair work, Arnold Leisure Centre has reopened. A brand new external roof and internal suspended ceiling has been installed along with a new lighting system in the pool area, upgrade of the heating system and work has also been done to improve the interior of the centre. The changing facilities have also been improved with the installation of new hair dryers and straighteners. The roof has been installed with energy efficient insulation which will reduce the costs of the upkeep of the 25 metre pool, keeping it cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. The centre, situated near Arnold town centre is also home to the Bonington Cinema and Theatre which has had a new heating and cooling system installed alongside the recently installed state-of-the-art high definition cinema screen and surround sound improving the cinema experience even further. Councillor Henry Wheeler, Portfolio Holder for Housing, Health and Well-being said; “I’m very happy that the leisure centre is now open again, I’d like to thank the residents, parents and swimming clubs for their patience whilst we had this essential work done. The swimming pool looks great now and residents will notice the difference when they return.”

S H O U L D I R U N ? Running for a lot of people is one of the first ‘go to’ forms of exercise. It is only as expensive as a good pair of running trainers for beginners. You can do it just about anywhere at any time. Running is a great cardio exercise – even a slow run for a short time will vastly reduce your risk of heart disease. Running makes your body produce feel good chemicals and there is the added bonus of burning lots of calories. There are loads of great apps to help you achieve your goals, whether it is to run 5k or a marathon. But before you lace your trainers up here are a few things to consider... Road running | Outdoor running Outdoor running, as expected, does feel physically harder than treadmill running. But why? Wind resistance and propulsion are the two main culprits. A mile on a treadmill can seem like ten on the street simply because of these two natural factors. Joint issues are another factor to consider. A lot of people believe that road running and running in general destroys your joints. This is largely a myth. Studies show that of 14,000 runners and 70,000 walkers over a 7-year period, the runners had no worse joint issues than the walkers. In fact osteoarthritis studies state that runners had fewer reports of any issues than the walkers. It seems that running can actually strengthen your joints. The key is to wear the correct trainers and train sensibly. Another common problem for many runners is Plantar fasciitis or flat foot. It is known that a weakness in calf strength, striking heel first while running and improper support in footwear (flat soled footwear) all contribute to plantar fasciitis. But it doesn’t have to stop you running. Wearing the correct footwear, improving your running technique and proper training will all improve the condition.

Treadmill running Should I run on the treadmill instead of road running? There may be factors that will influence your decision – bad weather (quite common in this country) or safety – on a dark winter night an outdoor run can seem daunting. If the treadmill is set to a 1% gradient this replicates the outdoor factors of propulsion and resistance, so your workout will be just as good as a road run. Many people find a treadmill boring – add some interest by using a virtual route on the screen. Running along a “beach” can make time go more quickly. A lot of treadmills now have a soft-landing element to them which can help with joint impact for beginners until you have reached a body mass that your joints are happy with. Then you can take to the streets if you prefer. However you choose to start your running experience, remember to warm up properly before you start and cool down afterwards. Wear proper running shoes fitted to your running style and most importantly... enjoy the moment! The Strength and Physique Team

pets ‘Just a boring black and white cat? Not me!’ Local cat Suki is appealing to readers for a home – as well as promoting the charity which took her in. Rescued by Animal Accident Rescue Unit, she has been waiting a while … and this could be because she is ‘boring’ black and white – but her sparkling personality shines through! Following the sad death of her owner, 3 year old Suki and her siblings are being fostered by the charity’s volunteers until ‘real’ homes come forward. Suki’s fosterer shares: ‘Suki is lovely company, she’s confident and talkative – the perfect pet.’ As with all the charity’s cats, Suki was FIV/ FeLV-tested and is negative; she is neutered, flea and worm treated, micro-chipped and vaccinated; her new owner is responsible for further vaccinations. For her details, contact the Adoption Officer at admin@aaru.org. uk, who will reply as soon as possible. All adoptions need a successful homecheck. The charity does not rehome cats on or near busy roads unless indoor-only, and recommends keeping them indoors at night, and for 6-8 weeks to bond with the new owner/home. To help cats like Suki, the charity’s forthcoming fundraising fairs are 2-4pm on Saturday 18 November and Saturday 9 December, at Lowdham Village Hall, Main Street, Lowdham NG14 7BD. The charity does not cover healthy strays/ unwanted pets, but helps neglected, injured and vulnerable animals and birds. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should leave a detailed message on 0115-9321555. For all animals needing homes, see www.animalaccident. org.uk

informative staff who promised us a non scary room.

Terrifying toy shops. Abandoned laboratories. Cursed crypts. Thrills, suspense, mystery, and horror await in our Nottingham escape rooms!

The Curio!!!!! The setting, an old manor house and we were to find a magic crystal for an eccentric explorer to avoid it falling into the wrong hands. Secrets lie within seemingly innocent walls and trinkets hold the key to untold riches!

e have the chance for 4 lucky readers to win an escape room challenge with Escapologic in Nottingham. Up to 5 people can take part in each prize.

With immersive special effects and completely realistic set and sound design, every locked door in Escapologic opens onto another world. Enter a game so detailed and real you’ll think you’re in a life-sized version of your favourite console title, or a real-life Hollywood blockbuster. As the clock starts ticking, you’ll have to work quickly to explore the intricately detailed sets, searching for clues to help you break out. Where are you? What happened here? Each element in the room points to a solution - but is it the right one? With just 60 minutes to sort the facts from the red herrings, every second counts. Follow leads. Test theories. But always be prepared to retrace your steps if you come to a dead end!

I

It was brilliant! We thoroughly enjoyed it. 14 seconds away from success! Arghh! This just made us hungry to do it again soon. To say we were buzzing when we came out is an understatement. Who’d have thought after all our reservations. I suspect people can become addicted to this place. If you’re looking for something a little different, you must try it!

Mrs W(Right) by Bob Massey

Harriett Maria was the daughter of Benjamin and Mary Day who had town and county houses in Yarmouth and Norwich. She was baptised at St Gregory, Norwich on 30th of January 1773. In 1794 at the age of 21 she married the banker and philanthropist Ichabod Wright. Upon their marriage they were the first residents to move into Mapperley Hall. The new couple’s first child, a son, was born just a year later in 1795 and was named Ichabod Charles after his father and grandfather. He joined his father in the banking profession in 1825, and is famous for his Italian literary pursuits. Later in the 1830’s he translated Dante’s Divine Comedy .

raised reasonable sums. An oil copy of Lady Smith with a cat appeared at auction several times between 2003-11, while a watercolour was sold in 1995. Carrington at the time did not have a church, so the National School was used for worship. Harriett’s husband therefore decided to found what became St. John’s Church, Carrington. He not only gave the land and largely paid for the church, but also partly endowed it. The Church was consecrated on April 6th, 1843 by Dr. John Kaye, the Bishop of Lincoln. St John’s was a district church, a chapel-of-ease serving the mother church of St Leodegarius in Basford. It did not become a parish in its own right until 1902. The architect appointed by Ichabod Wright was William Surplice who built a simple stone nave measuring 83’ x 38’, without aisles, chancel or tower, but with a bell turret and a porch at the south west corner. The nave could accommodate 350, plus room for 120 children in the gallery at the west end. Although the plans were by William Surplice, the design was that of Ichabod Wright himself. Harriett provided and arranged for almost all the fittings, including the communion rail, pulpit, reading desk and Poor Box. These were all made from oak grown on the Wright’s Mapperley Park Estate.

Harriett and Ichabod had 13 children in all, three sons and ten daughters. As a young woman, Harriett was the subject of portraits by both Sir William Beechey and Sir Thomas Lawrence. The portrait of her before her marriage by Beechey is pictured above. Harriett, like most girls of her class, were themselves taught to draw and sketch. She had a talent for art and was a good artist in her own right, producing several portraits and landscapes in the style of Josiah Reynolds. Some of her surviving pictures were auctioned and

Unfortunately Harriett was very ill at the time the church was consecrated and was unable to see her work finished. She died only two months later on June 21st, 1843. She was the first burial at the church and was interred in the family crypt under the church. Her ten daughters and three sons had an urn made and fixed in Mapperley Hall Grounds, in order to remind them of their mother. When Mapperley Hall was eventually sold the urn was removed to the churchyard, and it now stands by the side of the door.

I am researching the history of Mapperley and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail. com or post via NG5 magazine.

y: Logan Luck s w ie v e R h Bur ton Not So Muc , e in r e lv o W With the release this year of Logan Lucky, Steven Soderbergh returns to directing (films) after a two year gap. The story of Logan Lucky follows the Logan family, but unlike the title would have you believe, this family is cursed with the worst of all luck. This is apparent in the opening scenes of the film as Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum) loses his job and finds out his ex-wife and daughter are moving out of town, making it harder for him to get his precious time with his little angel. So what does a man in this dire situation do? Get together with their bartender brother Clyde Logan (Adam Driver), break out a notorious vault breaker from prison, the appropriately named Joe Bang (Daniel Craig), and steal a whole bunch of cash from a vault under the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Sounds about right. For a film that heavily features a huge NASCAR race, Logan Lucky is shamefully slow and plodding. Throughout the whole film Logan Lucky felt like it was missing something, a sense of urgency maybe? Something, anything to propel it into the next gear. Scenes felt too long and drawn out. Nothing that was happening felt engaging and while it was on for two hours, it felt closer to three by the end. And it’s a heist! Yet I never felt any sense of tension throughout this movie. No “oh nooo he’s about to get caught”, no squeezing of the arm rests in the cinema. It’s a real shame because the talent Soderbergh wrangled for this project was amazing. Daniel Craig’s break from being 007 to being an all-American heist-expert was an almost unrecognisable transformation. Channing Tatum was also a delight to watch.Tatum was perfect as Jimmy, this average guy that was just really down on his luck. You couldn’t help but feel for the guy that was trying his best but at every corner being shut down.

And it is through Jimmy that we see Logan Lucky’s strongest aspect, the very personal and human drama. Jimmy’s never-ending quest to remain an important part of his daughter’s life and not let her down results in the best and most effecting scene of this film. I almost had a tear in my eye. Forget the ‘quirky’ but ultimately by-the-books heist, it’s these emotional and relatable family moments that shine in the movie and let the actors really flex their muscles. Overall, this movie was just boring. It did not deliver the Edgar-Wright-like snappy and quirky heist movie that the trailers promised. But while the pacing and events of the film left a lot to be desired, the main cast of Logan Lucky was without a doubt incredible as they each effortlessly and absolutely transformed into their roles. Logan Lucky = 4/10 © Sam Burton (aged 20)

A Momentous Occasion 9 December 1967, 50 years ago this year, was a momentous occasion for the people of Arnold and the surrounding area. Arnold Town FC came into being in the sixties. The Saints, fondly known as St Mary’s FC - used to play behind St Mary’s Church during the early part of the last century, before moving to the Gedling Road ground, then together with Arnold Kingswell FC they became Arnold FC. They first entered the FA Cup in 1964 and in 1967 reached the 1st Round Proper when they had to play Bristol Rovers. The choice by the management and committee to play the game on their home ground was to pay dividends in future years. Noel Simpson, manager at the time, wrote in a letter; “we are always striving to make improvements, and as a result of this first class draw, hoping, with the blessing of Arnold Council, to go ahead with another stand.” The Saturday afternoon of the game Arnold was awash with colour, high spirits and expectation! Local businesses, Arnold Council, Arnold Cricket Club and the Home Brewery all pulled together with the committee and organised a spectacular event that still resonates today. In front of 3390 fans, Arnold FC lost 0-3. However the legacy of this match cannot be overstated. It allowed Arnold FC to build another stand, which, along with the installation of floodlights, brought a higher level of football to the town. Notable ex-players and managers brought their teams to play at Gedling Road; like Geoff Hurst, who managed Telford United and Jim Smith who brought a Birmingham City team that included Archie Gemmil, Colin Todd and Frank Worthington. Leicester City and Port Vale also played at the ground. A little known fact about the Bristol Rovers team that day was that one of their substitutes was a young player called Laurie Lloyd. Lloyd went on to be signed by Brian Clough in his halcyon years at Nottingham Forest. It would be another 10 years before Arnold FC repeated this achievement when the drew with Port Vale at Gedling Road before being beaten 2-5 in the replay at Vale Park. Thanks to Cllr John Parr for sharing these treasured memories with us.

(Knight of Cups, The Sun, Page of Cups)

Earth signs- Capricorn, Virgo, Taurus

Party, party, party.

(Page of Wands, Seven of Wands, Five of Swords)

This season is one long social whirl for you, so enjoy every moment. And, it’s not frivolous; it’s how you make the new connections and poach the ideas to carry you onwards. You’re adept at making something from nothing, and you’re about to be given a whole load of fresh stimulus. Also- book a holiday or a trip! Somewhere childlike / nostalgic… it’ll do you wonders.

You’ve dabbled or meddled (we all do) and it’s created a bit of a reaction. To you, it’s an over reaction but you can’t account for other folks’ feelings. Extract yourself from this little storm ASAP. Don’t linger to put them right, or to persuade them of your views. There’s nothing to be gained here; hotfoot it home.

Fire signs- Leo, Aries, Sagittarius

Cut your losses before your fingers get burnt!

Water signs- Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio

(The Lovers, Nine of Wands, Eight of Coins)

(The Fool, Ace of Swords, Ace of of Cups)

Stick with it…

A powerful new start and appreciation for life itself is due!

The time for umming, ahhing and glancing backwards is over. Yes, things might look tough ahead but, truly, it’s not as bad as it seems. You’ve got this. Think of all challenges right now as little learning curves. Tailored gifts of wisdom and resilience standing you in good stead. Once you get going, there’ll be no stopping you. So. Get going!

Are you ready for a total renewal of your lifestyle, attitude, values, priorities and projects? Hope so, because, like buses, they’re all going to come at once! And nothing to fear here, it’s all exciting, happy and warming. These changes will overwhelm you in a good way; you’ll realise what you’ve been missing.

Rise In Dementia Could Have Significant Impact On Wills A rise in the number of dementia sufferers could have a significant impact on wills, with the need for keeping documentation that proves capacity becoming even more essential.

An estimated 850,000 people in the UK live with dementia, with the condition reported as the most common cause of death last year. By 2050 the global total is expected to exceed over 150 million due to the increase in life expectancy. Industry experts have recently highlighted the significance that the increase in dementia sufferers could have on the wills and probate industry, stating that more awareness and understanding of the condition could potentially be beneficial for those who have been disinherited from a relative’s will. It also demonstrates the importance of dealing with vulnerability in an appropriate manner. The number of estate disputes is on the increase, as demonstrated by recent highly publicised cases such as Illott v Mitson, concerning a mother who chose to leave all her money to three charities in her will, excluding her daughter who appealed the decision. In many cases

92

mental incapacity is given as the reason for a relative being cut out of a will; however it can be difficult to actually prove this. It is essential that a person has capacity when writing and updating a will. To potentially avoid future disputes it could be practical to keep written evidence proving that you were of sound mind at the time the will was written. In some circumstances obtaining an external opinion, such as a medical expert’s opinion, could also be useful as they will be able to provide up to date medical records alongside their own opinion on a person’s capacity at the time they made their will. The need for handling the topic of capacity appropriately was also outlined, as it can be a sensitive issue, particularly for those who are vulnerable. However by explaining the consequences of failing to provide documentation proving capacity when making a will, it should be clear to see the necessity of it and the risks involved if you fail to have such precautions in place. For more information or advice about proving capacity when making a will contact Rothera Sharp’s Wills & Probate team on 0800 088 6263.

Nextdoor Network puts Nottingham in Touch with its Neighbours Over 100 Nottingham neighbourhoods have connected, thanks to the launch of an exciting new private social network, Nextdoor, as 96% of Brits say they crave a sense of community.

Gedling Granted £1 Million to Help Disabled Gedling Borough Council has been awarded nearly £1 million by Central Government to help improve the homes of disabled people in the borough. Eligible residents can apply for up to £30,000 for improvements to help make their homes easier to live in. The grants can be awarded for a number of different improvements to properties from stair lifts for the elderly to sensory rooms for young children with learning difficulties. Typical works include improving access to properties, installing suitable lighting, heating and ventilation or improving access and facilities within the property for cooking, sleeping and bathing. People can also apply for help improving the safety of the property. To be eligible the service user must live in the borough, be an owner occupier, private tenant, a tenant in social housing or a landlord with a disabled tenant. To apply for this scheme, people should contact Nottinghamshire County Council on 0300 500 8080 and request an assessment for a Disabled Facilities Grant.

96

The free network, which launched in the UK just 9 months ago, has seen the most widespread use across Nottingham in the East Midlands. Residents in 118 communities have come together at a time when one in five Brits feel lonely and one in three blame technology for stopping them getting to know their neighbours. Nextdoor’s aim is to provide a trusted forum for neighbours to work together to build stronger, safer, happier communities, a remedy for the 22% of people in the East Midlands who feel disconnected to the place they live and the 10% of people who can’t name their next door neighbour. Nottingham residents are using Nextdoor to get to know each other and the private social network is being used to organise street parties, share local advice and recommendations for babysitters or gardeners, for neighbourhood watch efforts, to find lost pets and start community fitness clubs. Designed to be simple for anyone to use – and boasting users aged between 18 all the way to 94 years old - the sign-up process is straightforward. To become a member of their Nextdoor neighbourhood, users just need to sign up with a valid email address and input their post code, at which point they’ll be able to see a map of their area, see updates and public posts, and connect with other members of their local community. Sign up to Nextdoor at nextdoor.co.uk or download the free app for iPhone or Android.

WHAT IS CBT? I

f you read this column regularly, you might get to the bottom of the page and see in the blurb that I am a CBT therapist. You may have heard of CBT before or it might be a complete mystery to you, so I thought I would spend this article explaining a little bit about CBT and what you can expect if you see a CBT therapist. And unlike more than one caller I have had enquiring after my services, I’m not talking about Compulsory Basic Training for motorcyclists… Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT for short, is a form of short-term psychotherapy. It’s a talking therapy, which allows you to work through your issues in a safe place with a therapist so that those issues no longer cause you problems in life. But rather than the cliché of therapy that you see so often on TV and in movies, it isn’t just a case of lying back on a couch whilst a therapist asks you how you feel about your father. On the contrary, CBT is interested in the here and now and making real-life changes in your present and future life, rather than going over the past. While it can sometimes be useful to know how certain problems started, the past can’t be changed so there is often little benefit to be gained from spending too much brain-space going over and over things that once happened to you. CBT works on the theory that the way you think affects the way that you feel and the way you behave and act, resulting from those thoughts. Cognitions are thoughts, so Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is about changing your dysfunctional or unhelpful thinking patterns so that your behaviour also changes. It’s about holding those unhelpful

thoughts up to the light of examination and seeing just how realistic they are – very often they’re not realistic at all and the negative feelings that follow such distorted feelings rarely make for a positive and fulfilling life. CBT is recognised by the NHS to be an effective treatment for a number of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, stress, OCDs and eating disorders amongst others. It can also help when you don’t necessarily have a “label” but you just know that you are stuck and you need some help with your thoughts or behaviour to break out of that rut. It’s considered to be a short-term therapy with most courses of treatment consisting of 12 sessions or less. It’s also considered to be a collaborative therapy – that means that you work with your therapist to develop a course of therapy that works for you, rather than your therapist simply telling you what to do. After all, we’re all different – just because two people suffer from depression or anxiety doesn’t mean that their experience of those conditions is the same. You are encouraged to work with your therapist to make sure that your treatment is unique to you and works for you. The collaborative nature also teaches you to problem-solve and to become your own therapist so that the risk of relapse is lessened. Of course, it’s not suitable for every condition and sometimes people with more complex issues or combinations of issues need a bit more help and that’s when a more open-ended, longer course of psychotherapy might be more appropriate.

Marie Scott is a CBT therapist and psychotherapist, based at Maple House Clinic in Eastwood, NG16 3BD. She deals with issues such as anxiety, depression, stress and anger amongst many others. For more information about Marie and the issues she can help with, please visit www.chrysalistherapyservices.co.uk or give her a call on 07791 894227. Marie provides all clients a safe and confidential space in which to deal with their issues.

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team.... Have a safe, secure and crime-free Christmas We’ll be working hard over Christmas to keep you and your families safe, but there are also steps you can take to protect yourself. When you’re out shopping: Many of us will be on the lookout for presents for our loved ones, and buying things that may be worth a lot of money. Try and stay alert to what’s going on around you, keep valuables, credit cards and cash inside clothing or bags, and if you do feel uncomfortable, report this to your nearest police officer, store attendant or security guard. When you’re at home: After we’ve been shopping, we need somewere to store all of those presents! By taking a few simple steps, such as making sure presents aren’t under the tree if it’s visible from windows, making your house look occupied by leaving lights on, and keeping your windows and doors locked at all times, you can reduce any risk to yourself and your property. After presents have been opened: Burglars know that many homes will have new and often expensive items following Christmas morning, especially tech such as laptops, phones, iPads, games consoles etc. To avoid drawing attention to this, think about how you dispose of packaging that could identify what’s in the house, and for valuable items, you should mark your valuables with your postcode. Find out more about this on the link below. We hope these quick steps have given you a few handy tips, and you can find even more advice about staying safe at Christmas here:http://nottinghamshire.police.uk/advice/prevention/ christmas We hope you have a very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!
