BOX CLEVER Three Veg Pakora

2 med carrots - grated 2 med courgettes - grated 1 small sweet potato - grated 1 med onion - grated 1 tbsp cumin seeds 1 tsp dried chilli flakes (opt) 2 tsp garam masala good pinch salt 250g gram flour sunflower oil method Put all the grated vegetables into a large bowl. Add the spices, salt and flour & mix well. Gradually add enough warm water to make a thick batter. Best done by hand. The mixture should hold together and not be runny. Heat about 1cm oil in a deep frying pan. Once hot, fry spoonfuls of the mixture. Turn half way through so they are golden brown. This only takes a few minutes. Drain on kitchen paper and serve with a mint yogurt dip and mango c h u t n e y. You can vary the veg. These are a great way to get kids eating a variety of veg.

I really like the idea of a weekly veg box delivery, so when Red Earth Organics offered me a box I jumped at the chance. I have to say I was really impressed with the quality, variety and freshness of the produce. A box like the one pictured is ÂŁ11. I think this is great value. These recipes are all from the goodies I received in the box. Red Earth Organics can be reached on 07794 467545.

The WEEE banks can be found with our other recycling banks on Haywood Road, Mapperley, Morrisons in Colwick, Sainsburys in Arnold and Milton Court in Ravenshead. They are distinguishable by their grey colour with pink writing and the Gedling Borough Council logo. The banks are a joint initiative between Gedling Borough Council and Veolia Environmental Services, Nottinghamshire County Council’s waste contractors. They are suitable for small electrical items such as toasters and irons and once collected, will be sent on for recycling. Other bulkier items such as fridges and freezers can be taken to a Household Waste Recycle Centre or collected by Gedling Borough Council for a small charge. The banks are running as a pilot scheme and if proven successful, will be rolled out to other districts across the county.

The Lazy Gardener.... is turfed out!!

Whether your lawn is the size of a postage stamp or a football pitch, to keep it looking green and gorgeous requires some care and attention. In our house the most the lawn ever gets is a mow every few days during the spring and summer...and it does show.

Compaction and sub-surface thatch are two of the main problems on lawns by restricting water, air and nutrients getting through. Hollow-tine aeration is the most effective way of reducing these problems by removing thousands of cores out of the lawn, allowing the roots to spread enabling them to receive nutrients. Aeration stimulates and encourages root growth and can be done with a garden fork or a special mechanical aerator. Re seed Any worn/bare patches caused by the summer wear can be re-seeded now.

I have since learnt that grass never stops growing it just slows down and we should really keep mowing at least monthly through Autumn and Winter subject to dry conditions.

Leaves Prevent accumulation of fallen leaves by removing then from the lawn weekly otherwise the grass will struggle to survive and diseases may establish themselves.

For some more tips on improving the state of my lawn I contacted our good friends at Green Thumb and David Kelly has kindly given me some great tips which I am delighted to share with you.... Autumn is a very important time of the year for lawn maintenance. Scarification This is an essential part of lawn maintenance. We scarify to remove matted growth and thatch both of which are detrimental to a lawn, thinning out the thatch improves the plants growing conditions and it also reduces one of the causes of moss. It can be done with a specialist hand tool or a machine. Aeration Put simply aeration is making holes in the lawn to let carbon dioxide out of the soil and allow oxygen in.

....Blimey, thanks for all those tips Dave. I had no idea there was so much involved. For those of us with very little time (or inclination!) companies like Green Thumb offer a great lawn care service and it really doesn’t cost the earth. For more information on lawn care or to get Dave and his team round to help just give them a call on 0115 965 4743. Š Ali Wale

A Lifeline for Animals in Need

Animal Accident Rescue Unit is a transport service for sick, injured or vulnerable animals and birds. It provides both transport to a vet surgery, arranging for their treatment and caring for them in foster homes until either their owner can be traced or new homes can be found. The Charity has no central base and is run entirely by volunteers working from their own homes. It has taken in so many cats over the last few months, it desperately needs new fosterers who can provide a temporary home for one of our rescued cats. If you think you can help, please ring the Recruitment Officer on 0115-956 3799 (recruitment calls only).

Do you love dogs? Are you mobile? Have you got a couple of hours a week to volunteer? House-bound pensioner and Bosun need your help. We live near Arnot Hill Park. Please call 0115 926 2643

Volunteer Drivers and Phone Operators Needed!

Local Nottingham-based charity Animal Accident Rescue Unit is seeking volunteer drivers with their own car who have a couple of hours a week to spare during the daytime, evening or weekend. The charity needs help to transport rescued animals to and from vet practices and foster homes. Additionally, reliable people are needed to take calls from the public who require help with animals they find in distress. All roles are based from home. To learn more on how you can make a difference to vulnerable animals, please ring the Recruitment Officer on 0115-956 3799 (recruitment calls only). Many other volunteering roles are also available. Animal Accident Rescue Unit lifeline telephone number for dealing with animals in distress is 0115-932 1555. For non-urgent queries and information, email us at admin@ aaru.org.uk, visit www.animalaccident.org. uk, or by post to PO Box 5414, Burton Joyce, Nottingham NG14 5DT. Hollygirt School to take boys aged 3 - 7 from September Hollygirt School is pleased to announce that it is welcoming applications for boys aged 3-7 to start from September onwards. It is not the first time that the school has taught boys; there were little boys here during the 1980s. For parents with both boys and girls, there are very few independent co-educational schools with a similar family-feel to Hollygirt and we are aware that for parents of young children, having to do multiple school drop-offs is challenging. Taking boys at a young age will not detract away from Hollygirt’s ethos and there are no plans to extend the age range for boys. Hollygirt helps children develop their individual strengths and abilities, whilst ensuring they are safe, secure and happy. All junior children spend a day with us to find

out if they will be happy in our environment. We take children of all abilities and each is assessed before they join, so that their educational needs can be met, wherever they are in terms of their ability. They all make excellent progress and we are proud of their achievements at whatever level. In our small school everyone knows each other and teachers have the time to get the best from each child. Your child can join Hollygirt at any age, from 3 up to the start of Year 10, subject to a place being available. Entry can be at any time, not just the start of a school year or term. Most new pupils join without knowing other children, but soon make friends in the warm and homely atmosphere. Our quality of care was rated as outstanding in the school’s last inspection.

Our next Open Morning is on Saturday 29th September at 9.30am. All are welcome. If you can’t make it, just call us to come in for a chat and a look around. We look forward to seeing you. Our Senior School Entrance Assessment for Year 7 entry in Sept 2013 is on Tuesday 27th November.

CARLTON FORUM SWIMMING CLUB

Committees Corner and Other News:

Welcome to the latest edition of the Carlton Forum Swimming Club page. We had an exciting end to the season with lots of news to report. Club Championships: Our annual Club Championships took place in June/July and this year it was one of the best ever. Swimmers from all levels took part over 4 days of competition and set a huge number of Personal Best Times (PBs). Club Championships records can only be broken on the day and this year Elliot Woodward (100 fly, 200 free), and Will Gayne (100 & 200 free) set new marks. One highlight is always the Coaches Invitation event for non-squad 6-10 year olds; champions this year were Zara Campbell-Simm and Sam Banham – congratulations! Joe McElhinney and Michelle Butler claimed the Masters titles, Michelle getting a great PB in her event. Well done to all of the swimmers and a huge thank you to all who helped to make the event such a great success. Thanks also to Cllr. Clarke for his donation and to our official Club Championships sponsor CNR Services: www. cnrdesign.co.uk Midlands Regional and National Championships: Special mention this year goes to Luke Mitchell who claimed a brilliant 10yo overall top-10 Midlands place having only started competitive swimming the year before. Luke also came 3rd in the 100m backstroke event. Will Gayne continued his great form but was just pipped to the post in the 12yo section after his closest rival pulled out the swim of his life in the very last event. Will did manage to win the 100m and 200m backstroke, and 1500m freestyle events. Will then went on to compete in the Nationals at Ponds Forge, Sheffield and produced some tremendous performances again to finish overall 3rd place in his age group. He also won a silver medal in the 1500m freestyle and a bronze in the 200m Individual Medley events. Will also represented East Midlands in the Schools National Champs in June. Notts Championships: Stage 2 Gala – we achieved a creditable 3rd in the B-Final. Not so many PBs but a great club record for Elliot Woodward, some strong swims from Angus Findlay, and Russ Crawford showed that you are never too old to PB – he really is an inspiration for the younger club swimmers. Sports Centre League 2 – Round 4 of 6 at Hucknall brought us another 3rd place. Highlight of the night was a 10yo club record for Luke Mitchell in the 50m backstroke. There were many PBs including several for our older swimmers – well done to Russ, Fay, Adam, Joseph, Lucy, and Eleanor.

Two fantastic non-swimming achievements to report: Molly Campbell came individual 9th and her team were champions in the GB National Pentathlon Championships, and Ed Reckless completed the London-Paris bike ride raising over £1100 for charity.

Congratulations to Lauren Chafer, Adam Glossop, Beatrice Findley and to Kate and Mia Sallis for passing their Level 1 Teaching Aquatics Course. The strength of coaching within the club continues to be improved and we are proud to help develop our swimmers to become coaches and teachers within the sport.

If your child is between 5 and 8 years of age, confident in water, and wants to learn how to swim they can join our Learn to Swim Programme. For more information please contact Pam on 0115 9873274.

We are now preparing for the new season and looking forward to our Presentation Evening on 21st September. Swimming is a great way to keep fit and the club environment provides a lot of fun, enjoyment and competition for all involved. For further information on joining our club please contact Greg Wiley (07531 776368, gregw_1@hotmail.com). Please visit us at http:// www.cfsc.co.uk.

Diamond Celebrations

Six Green Flags in a row for Arnot Hill Park! Arnot Hill Park in Arnold has been awarded a Green Flag for an amazing sixth year in a row.

There was great excitement when members of the Nottinghamshire branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild were asked to exhibit their textile art at Vernon Park for the Royal visit. Like the Queen, the Nottinghamshire Branch of the Guild is celebrating its Diamond Anniversary this year. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge came to see the display and Eileen Tilley presented the Duchess with a textile posy trimmed with lace and a lace butterfly. Many people at the event enjoyed seeing the varied work of the group on display. Some members are new to embroidery; others have been members of the Guild for over 25 years. The group meets monthly in the city centre and there is usually a speaker. The topics are very varied and it is fascinating to see the work of others and hear of what inspired them. This year they look forward to talks about using recycled materials, lace and the recreation of Lady Peacocks dress. Some of the members go to Sherwood Community centre for weekly evening classes and/or a monthly workshop. The Embroiderers’ Guild is a registered charity. There are many other activities and events in the region that members can enjoy. This friendly group meet at the Nottingham Mechanics, North Sherwood Street on the first Tuesday of the month at 1-30pm. If you have a love of and an interest in textiles why not come along? Visitors are very welcome. For more information contact - Judith Hanley: Tel - 0115 9531695 Email - tedjudyhanley@ntlworld.com Web site http://www.emreg.org.uk/branches/ nottinghamshire

The Green Flag Award is a national award which recognises the best parks and green spaces in the country, and is a sign of an excellent, well managed and customer friendly park. The latest award came from an unannounced visit by a Green Flag Judge, which thanks to high scores in previous years’ assessments meant the council qualified for the park to be judged during a ‘mystery shopper’ visit. The park has continued to evolve over the last year, with a number of projects recently completed, including a new landscaped area to both sides of the front entrance in January, solar panels installed to the Civic Centre, and Jubilee Depot and new reed beds installed on the lake to improve wildlife biodiversity. Gedling Borough Council works closely with the Friends of Arnot Hill Park to manage and maintain the park. It is a popular visitor attraction with a range of facilities for the family, including a wildlife pond with a range of popular and rare breed birds, refreshment kiosk, a skate park and play area, rose and sensory gardens, ball court and aviary. If you are interested in becoming a Friend of Arnot Hill Park, please contact the Park Rangers on 0115 901 3636.

Elizabeth Wragg At 3pm on Saturday 10th September 1864, 10 year old Henry Beardsley and his friend set out looking for blackberries on Mapperley Hills Road. By 4pm they had gone as far as Wood Lane, near the spring which flowed there, when they spotted something on the ground. It was the body of a very young child, in the hedge, a couple of metres from the road. George Gilbert, a brick makers labourer was coming home from work at the brickyard of Mr Gripper on Mapperley Hill when he heard the boys cry out and they rushed to tell him of their find.

Knaphill Prison

Gilbert returned with them to the scene and saw the body of a male child, situated near the boundary stone between Nottingham and Basford, partly hidden by the hedge. The police were sent for and arrived about a hour and a half later. While awaiting there arrival Gilbert noticed a piece of cloth laying near the body and he wrapped it around the naked child. When Police Constable Mason arrived he took charge of the child and observed that it had a narrow piece of cloth tied so tightly around its throat that it could not be removed. The cloth in which Gilbert had covered the child was of the same colour and type as that used by the Nottingham Union Workhouse and had the letters NUW along one edge. PC Mason took the body to the police station and then went to the workhouse to make enquires. He found that an unmarried mother by the name of Elizabeth Wragg, aged 19, had left the workhouse

by Bob Massey at 14.20 that day, with her newborn baby, to go to her mothers house at Sherwood Street. The body was identified as that of Elizabeth Wraggs child by the nurse at the workhouse. Chief Constable Hedington and Inspector Rayner then visited the house on Sherwood Street and interviewed Wragg’s mother Maria. When Elizabeth came out of the house they asked her the whereabouts of her child. They were shown Elizabeth’s other child who was about 2 years old. When asked about the baby she made no answer and was arrested on the charge of murder. At her trial she claimed that she was frightened to take the baby home and had told her mother that it had died. In fact she had left the workhouse with a healthy child. Joseph Brookhome, the doctor carrying out the post mortem, confirmed that the child had died from the cord tightened around its neck and that it was otherwise well and healthy. The girl claimed that she had not strangled it but thrown it down and left it crying on the ground. The jury surprisingly found her guilty, not of murder, but of manslaughter and she was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment. This was carried out first at Parkhurst and then Knaphill where she appears as a convict in the census. No more is known of her after this and her fate and that of her other child is unknown.

I am researching the people and history of Mapperley and would like to hear from anyone with memories or photographs of the area or the people involved. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG magazines

Rehearsals are doubling up for choir in Diamond Year!

Additional rehearsals are helping to step up the preparation for the Bestwood Male Voice Choir’s Diamond Jubilee Concert on 23 September 2012 at the Albert Hall Nottingham. Following on from a wonderful exchange visit in May to Rotenburg in Germany, singing the National Anthem on BBC’s Radio 2 Royal Jubilee ”We are Sixty” programme on 3 June and singing in front of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, during the Queen’s visit on 13 June, the choir is now rehearsing hard to fine tune their repertoire for the Diamond Jubilee Concert. Special guests for the concert include BeVox, the truly inspirational and dynamic people’s choir, with over 100 members and David Butterworth on the fabulous Binns Organ. The concert programme will climax with a joint item with Bestwood MVC, BeVox and the Binns Organ, which is guaranteed to ‘lift the roof’! Tickets are selling well, with over two thirds sold to date, so if you are interested in enjoying a really entertaining and uplifting evening, call the Box Office on (01623) 484091. Adult tickets are £10, under 16 are £5 and Family Tickets £25 (2 adults & 2 under 16).

After the overwhelming display of community spirit shown as the Olympic Torch passed through Nottinghamshire, I am convinced more than ever that there are people out there who care about their neighbourhoods and want to give something back to their community.

So why not join Nottinghamshire Police as a Special Constable?

Successful applicants receive training before starting on the job and are asked to work a minimum of 16 hours per month.

Specials not only play a significant part in assisting with the policing, they also help us resource public events such as fairs and carnivals. There are nearly 400 Specials currently working across the force. Not only did they play a significant part in assisting with the policing of the disorder in August last year, they also work in neighbourhood policing teams and help police public events. As a Special Constable you will work with a diverse range of people, make new friends, learn valuable new skills, which are transferable to the workplace, and challenge yourself with new experiences. DANCING ON THE EDGE – WHEN DO YOU QUALIFY AS SELF-EMPLOYED? There are a variety of labels we attach to the status of people who undertake work, ranging from ‘selfemployed’ to those who are ‘employees’. Historically, if you are self-employed you are not on the payroll and you account to HMRC for income tax. Normally people who are self employed have more freedom as to how and when they work. However, they do not normally fall within the framework of any legal protection and might be hired and fired at will. Those who work as employees, have the benefit of all statutory rights including (after the qualifying period) the right not to be Unfairly Dismissed. In a recent Employment Appeal Tribunal case, the status of a Miss Quashie, who had been a lap dancer in a well known London establishment, was examined. When she started at the club, it was agreed that she was self-employed so was responsible to HMRC herself. However, the determining issue in deciding whether or not someone is an employee is to examine the degree of “mutuality of obligation” between the parties, including the extent to which the individual is controlled by the business. The club operated strict rules about when Miss Quashie worked and when she was paid. There was a further issue in Miss Quashie’s case; normally an employee must be continuously employed in order to qualify for the right to claim Unfair Dismissal and Miss Quashie worked occasional days over a 4 week period. In this case though, the Employment Appeal Tribunal expanded the law to include contracts where there are recurring gaps between working for the business. Even though both parties initially described this arrangement as being self employed, the Employment Appeal Tribunal ruled that Miss Quashie was an employee, therefore when she was sacked she had the right to claim Unfair Dismissal. Whether or not her dismissal was unfair in law will be decided by an Employment Tribunal but if she wins, then her loss of earnings might be substantial, given that she said she could earn in excess of £2,000 per week.
