HOW TO CONTACT YOUR LOCAL BEAT TEAM ST ANN’S POLICE STATION St Ann’s Wells Road NG3 3HR 101 Ext: 811 6770/6771

BEAT TEAMS Mapperley Ward PC James North 07702 141861 PC Andy Cochran 07792 437359 PC Brian Dacunha 07792 437358 St Ann’s Ward PC Jeanette Stasuik 07792 437306 PC Paul Whant 07792 437361 PC Paul Deane 07792 437357

From Beat Manager, PC James North... You can tell autumn is here when you notice the nights drawing in, it won’t be long until we’re travelling to and from work in the dark. I find I can’t wait to get into the house as the cool weather really starts to grip and I don’t always pay as much attention to what I’ve left in the car. But I’ll always go back out and have a look if I think I might have left something on show. After all, I don’t want to attract thieves to my house. I know most people wouldn’t leave valuables on show but recently I’ve also started to think about what other items thieves might be attracted by. Would a bit of loose change be tempting? Or maybe my coat? Or the school bag on the back seat? I make my sandwiches every morning as I don’t know where I’ll end up during my day. I take it home at night to wash my sandwich box but I always make sure I get it out of the car. That lunch box in the footwell of the car could look like a range of things in the dark. Many of which would be more tempting to an offender than the remains of my lunch. In my experience if your car door or window is open it’s even more tempting for the thief to have a look and take whatever they fancy. After all, what’s stopping them?

Find your Safer Neighbourhoods team by entering your postcode on the homepage of www. nottinghamshire.police.uk

Thieves don’t like to smash glass because it makes a noise. But if they see something of interest they might think it’s worth the risk. Even if, to you and me, the item isn’t valuable you get back to your car in the morning and find the nasty surprise of a smashed window. Although, it’s not just over night that your car and possessions can be vulnerable. I always think it’s surprising how quickly offenders can steal your stuff and be gone, leaving you with the repair bill and a lot of inconvenience. Next time you get out of your car don’t just take your valuables but also remove anything that is on show. And never forget to lock your car. But it’s not just items in your car that you need to keep an eye on, make sure you also keep hold of your personal belongings when you’re out and about. When you get your mobile on a contract you might not realise how valuable it is but don’t take it for granted. It is like carrying a wodge of cash around with you, you wouldn’t leave that on the table at the pub while you go to the bar, so please don’t leave your mobile. If you have any concerns about crime in the area don’t hesitate to report it to us on 101.

All for love at the Angel by Bob Massey

In 1835 the Old Angel Pub on Woolpack Lane in the Nottingham Lace Market was the drinking establishment for many a local lad. Two of the regulars were young single men called Austin and Lupton. Thomas Austin was employed as a bobbin turner and was living in Coalpit Lane. Joseph Lupton was a dyer from Hockley. A certain young lady who was employed as a barmaid at the inn attracted the attention of both men and a deep rivalry developed between them over which one would win her affections. On Saturday 2nd May 1835 a fight started between her two suitors. It was broken up before the police were called and the young lady decided to settle the matter by stating that if they felt this strongly they should have a proper organised fight and whoever won would also win her heart. Both men, already battered from their scuffle, agreed her terms and a fight was arranged to take place on Mapperley Hills just out side the city boundary. On Monday 11th May a crowd assembled to see the outcome of this duel. Rather than pistols or swords these young men had nothing but hard bare knuckles. The men were pretty evenly matched and once the fight started they battled hard for two hours. Although both men were badly beaten, neither would give way. This fight was for their hearts desire and neither was prepared to give her up. Suddenly Lupton collapsed and fell. Austin was overjoyed and claimed victory until someone realised that Lupton was not moving. Unconscious, Lupton was carried back to Nottingham and taken to a medical man. Sadly it was in vain, as it was soon discovered that he had died. Lupton’s body

was then taken to Mrs Kitchens house in Knotted Alley, off Canal Street, where he had lodged. Austin, in a terrible state and very concussed and confused, had returned home to his bed unaware of his rivals fate. He was receiving medical attention and being bled with leeches. As soon as the local magistrate heard about the fight he ordered an inquiry into the events and who had acted as the two seconds. A second is the supporter each man would have been allowed in their corner. As a result three people were detained awaiting the outcome of the inquest. The inquest was held on the 7th May 1835 with the deceased being described as 5’ 10” in height and of muscular and athletic build. The inquest heard that Lupton exhibited many injuries from the earlier fight on the Saturday as well as more recent injuries. There was extensive damage to his right fist, arms, body and face as well as his right eye. The verdict of the jury was manslaughter against Austin with Henry Holland and Joseph Caleb, the seconds, being held as accessories.Upon hearing the outcome Holland and Austin fled and only Caleb was held in custody. After 11 weeks in prison he was fined 1/and released. The other two were never caught. And the barmaid... well her name and fate are not recorded but she won neither man and had poor Lupton’s death on her conscience for the rest of her life.

I am researching the history of Mapperley and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail. com or post via NG5 magazine.

Moving House –

Is there something you’ve forgotten? Moving house is one of the most stressful experiences in life and with so many things on the To Do list, notifying the DVLA of your new address if you own a motor vehicle can sometimes get forgotten. However, the importance of the DVLA holding the correct information is higher than most motorists realise. When the driver of a vehicle commits a road traffic offence and is not stopped at the time, the registered keeper of that vehicle will receive a letter from the police, notifying them that an offence has been committed and requesting that they provide the identity of the driver to the police (within 28 days). If that information is not supplied within the required time frame, the registered keeper commits an offence of ‘failing to provide information’ and on conviction for this, the registered keeper is liable to a fine and, more importantly, to have their licence endorsed with 6 penalty points. I have seen a significant increase in clients seeking advice on situations where they have moved house and failed to notify the DVLA of their change of address. The concern in this situation is that a relatively minor offence can develop into a much more serious result. In relation to a speeding offence of doing 37mph in a 30mph limit for example, what could be a penalty of a speed awareness course (providing you haven’t done a similar course within the preceding three years) and no points, can turn into six penalty points on your licence, if you fail to provide the name of the driver. To avoid this situation happening to you, don’t let an oversight lead to a much bigger problem - ensure that you notify the DVLA as soon as your address changes and update your V5C registration document (log book) not forgetting your driving licence too, and if someone else uses your vehicle and commits an offence, it is vital that you advise the DVLA of their details. For further information on this or any other motoring related matter, please do not hesitate to contact Anton Balkitis at Rothera Dowson solicitors on 0800 096 0998.

Council seals the deal to create Gedling Country Park After months of negotiations, Gedling Borough Council announced today that it had secured land on the site of the former Gedling Colliery to transform into a country park. Gedling Colliery is one of the last remaining collieries to be re-developed and has remained dormant since the colliery was closed in 1991. The council has agreed a long-term lease with site owners Harworth Estates that will pave the way to create a 238 acre area of parkland with lagoons, footpaths, cycle trails and hiking routes. The lagoons will be complimented by picnic areas that will be fully accessible for all, including disabled people. The country park will also be a haven for local wildlife, and the Council is ambitious for the site to become accredited as a local nature reserve. Future development plans also include a children’s play area and, subject to funding, a permanent visitor’s centre exploring the area’s heritage.

going management of the country park. The park is anticipated to open to the public by Autumn 2014. Councillor John Clarke, Leader of Gedling Borough Council, said: “This is a historic moment for the people of Gedling. There’s been talk about creating a country park on the site of the former Gedling pit ever since it was closed and I’m absolutely delighted to announce that the Council has secured the land to make this happen. Sealing this land deal has been a long and often frustrating exercise but we’ve stuck with it and can now look forward to seeing local people out on the new park enjoying themselves. “The colliery site was the focal point of the local community for many many years and will become so again. The country park will provide a beautiful place for people to enjoy and bring back to life the great heritage and history of this part of Gedling. It will also bring a welcome boost to the local economy and provide a place where people can take their families for walks, cycle rides and wildlife spotting in clean, fresh air with fantastic views.” Owen Michaelson, Chief Executive of Harworth Estates, who worked with the council to transfer the land, commented “Having worked for some years with Gedling Council on this proposed Country Park, I’m delighted that we’ve now transferred 240 acres to the Council which will enable the final stages of restoration to take place.

Now that the land has been secured, the Council is set to invest nearly £1 million, including £630,000 of funding provided by Gedling Homes and a further £250,000 from the Homes and Community Agency (HCA), to complete the first phase of works that will get the country park up and running and open to the public. The Council plans to establish a “Friends Of” group to pursue future funding and investment opportunities, and to ensure that local residents are fully involved in the design, development and on-

“It’s been very satisfying being involved in this project which turns the legacy of coal mining into something that can be enjoyed by so many members of the local community. I’m also pleased that, nearby, the former mine site continues to generate energy by harnessing old mines gas as well as a proposed new facility that aims to provide solar power. A great new future for an old industrial site”

A Funeral Service With A Difference Arnold resident Stacey Dawe has recently completed training to become an Independent Funeral Celebrant with the UK College of Celebrancy. Said Stacey “In today’s society fewer people find themselves associated to a particular church yet many hold onto either some form of spiritual or religious beliefs. When it comes to organising a funeral quite often only a religious service or more atheist style humanist service is offered, whereas an Independent Celebrant will tailor a funeral to respect the family’s wishes making it personal and meaningful to capture the true essence, personality and character of the loved one.

The most important part of the service is that each tribute is created individually and personalised for the person who has died. I spend a lot of time with the bereaved families prior to the funeral to learn as much as possible about their loved one and I actively encourage all those who wish to take part in the service to do so, by way of spoken, written or musical tribute, or alternatively families may like to participate simply by choosing appropriate music, readings or poems”. Stacey says her service will truly celebrate the life of the person who has died, whilst at the same time sensitively acknowledging the grief of those left behind. Why should I consider setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney? Lasting Power of Attorney is not just for the elderly. We know that we should write a will, but few people are aware that they should also consider a Lasting Power of Attorney. People sometimes take it for granted that they will be able to look after their own every day affairs and make decisions for themselves. Sadly the ability to do this often decreases as we grow older. This could be for a number of reasons such as an accident, physical illness or the onset of a metal illness; all of which could result in you having difficulties in managing your day to day affairs. Lasting Powers of Attorney are designed to be recognised by banks, financial institutions, care homes and local authorities as well as tax and pensions authorities. Although this is something that we do not like to think about, these difficulties can be overcome by the preparation of one document, a Lasting Power of Attorney. It is a serious and powerful document about which you will want straightforward and down to earth legal advice. A Lasting Power of Attorney gives someone you trust, usually a relative or friend, the power and legal authority to act on your behalf in the event that you aren’t able to do so for yourself. There are safeguards to make sure your wishes are carried out and you

will have peace of mind in knowing that these tasks will be undertaken by someone of your choosing. If you do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place and later become mentally incapacitated, your husband, wife, children or other relatives may face long delays and considerable expense in applying to the Court of Protection to get access and take control of your finances. Local firm QualitySolicitors Yates & Co have introduced a scheme to encourage local people to plan ahead by considering setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney. Concerned by the general lack of awareness of this issue, we have put together a very special offer to help people with the documents and the complete registration process. Present this advert to claim a full £50* discount against our usual costs.

Ella’s Teen Talk:

Handling Money

We all know there’s nothing worse than making plans with friends and being forced to cancel them because our pockets are empty. I’m personally fed up of hearing my parents tell me that “money doesn’t Ella Higginbotham aged 15 grow on trees” (what a silly saying, it’s a bit obvious isn’t it!) when the majority of us under 16s can’t get jobs, but we really don’t want to miss out on a social life: we can’t win! When our purses are sparse there are just a few little things we can do to make sure we aren’t completely broke: 1) Get a Terramundi money pot- its saves money and looks pretty, genius! It’s different because what you put in you can’t get out until it’s full up and ready to be smashed. So you know that random change lying in your jean pocket or in the bottom of your bag? just chuck it into the terramundi and before you know it it’s time to smash it and you have a whole load of cash. Plus you get the added bonus of getting the hammer and whacking it open; it’s a lot of fun or can act as an excellent stress release which is perfect for all our teenage traumas! 2) Don’t buy food and drink-starve! No but seriously if you’re going for a day out in town or in the park don’t waste money on buying food, just take it with you. Wrap up a sandwich at home because it’s just as yummy and completely free! 3) Do little jobs- you’ve got to break the teen catchphrase of “can’t be bothered” (however heart-breaking it may be) and don’t be lazy, it only takes ten minutes to wash some pots or iron a few pairs of jeans. Ask your parents for just 50p every now and then by helping around the house and it will all add up. Oh and don’t forget the puppy dog eyes if you’re really desperate. 4) Compare where you shop- don’t buy the first thing you see. You can probably get the same thing elsewhere for a much better price. Be patient and window shop for a bit until you find the ideal, cheap purchase. 5) Babysit- it’s a doddle (Hopefully!) You get paid to spend your evening watching TV whilst the kids are in bed, plus everyone tells you to help yourself so that means free food! You can’t go wrong! You or your parents must know families with young kids so ask around and do a good job of it; that way word gets around and you will eventually have loads of Next business. It’s the little things that you can do to make sure you’ve always got some money spare to do the things that you want to do. Keep it sensible and realistic and you should never be searching for scraps of money around your bedroom again because, trust me, that’s a lost battle.

issue: Handling Parents... especially at Christmas!

OPEN EVENING THURSDAY 19TH SEPTEMBER 2013 AT 7PM

Choosing the right secondary education for your child is one of the most important decisions you can make in supporting their development into young adulthood.

If you would like your child to:  Be taught by well qualified, enthusiastic and committed staff  Be taught clear Christian morals and values in a caring community  Be part of a school deemed to be good with outstanding features by OFSTED in September 2010  Attend a school with a history of good examination results  Experience a wide range of extracurricular activities  Be supported to be the best that they can be at whatever they try

Then Christ the King Catholic Voluntary Academy is the place for you! We are situated near Arnold town centre and are easily accessible by local bus services. Christ the King is an academy for the whole community. We welcome applications for places from parents of children who have not attended our partner primaries or who are not Catholic but whose parents wish them to be educated in the caring Christian Community. Indeed, the governing body offer places to such students annually and we celebrate this diversity.

If you are unable to attend the evening, please contact us. There are a limited number of places for a tour of the academy during the mornings of 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th and 27th September 2013. If you are still unable to attend, but would like to receive a brochure, please contact the school.

Call for a FREE BROCHURE Arnold Art Society arranges, at considerable expense, a programme of demonstrations by well known professional artists between September and December each year. Five demonstrations have been arranged this year with the first one being held on Wednesday evening September 18th. The complete programme can be seen below. We have been fortunate this year to have been awarded a grant by Nottinghamshire County Council towards financing the cost of the programme. One of the conditions of the award is that we must contact other art societies and U3A groups in Notts and members of the public with an interest in art to join Arnold Art Society members on the occasions of our demonstrations. This is the reason for this invitation. I should add that due to the limited seating accommodation at the Pondhills Community Centre, where the demonstrations will be held, the number of non-members of Arnold Art Society attending each event will have to be limited. We shall also be making a charge of ÂŁ3.00 per person for visitors. The demand for visitor places at each demonstration could be high so it is suggested that enquiries for places should be made, stating which demonstration you and/or your members wish to attend, as soon as possible to: John Williams (Secretary) Arnold Art Society, 37, Lees Road, Mapperley, Nottingham NG3 6GZ. Sweet treatS

Banoffi Pie

Kieran’s Key Lime Pie

300g ginger biscuits 70g butter 397g tin condensed milk or caramel 3 bananas 300ml whipping cream chocolate for decoration 20cm spring based cake tin Method

This recipe is adapted from a BBC Food recipe. 375g gluten free digestive biscuiits 150g butter 8 large limes (zest & juice) 1 pint double cream 397g tin condensed milk to decorate (optional) 85g creme fraiche If using condensed milk - place tin in a 1 tsp lime zest large pan of boiling water - making sure the tin is completely covered. Boil the tin for 2 to 3 hours. Keep checking and topping up with boiling water. This is very important. If the tin isn’t covered it could explode! If this is too much for you just use a tin of caramel. Grease the tin. I line with greaseproof paper to make it easier to get the pudding out. Crush the ginger biscuits (I use a food processor) to fine crumbs. Melt the butter in a saucepan. Once melted, add the biscuit crumbs and mix well. Line the bottom of the tin with the mixture and press up the sides. Use a flat bottomed jar to press the mixture firmly then place in fridge to set for a couple of hours. Slice the bananas and place on the biscuit base. Pour over the caramel (if using boiled condensed milk be very careful when opening the tin). Whip the cream and when cool cover the top with cream. Decorate with chocolate shavings or sprinkles.

Method

Crush the biscuits either in a food processor or in a bag with a rolling pin. Melt the butter in a pan and stir in the crushed biscuits. The mixture can be split between 2 x 18cm tins or 1 x 23cm tin. Press mixture into tins & chill in the fridge. Put lime juice, condensed milk & cream in a bowl and whisk for 1-2 mins. Add lime zest to mixture (save a tsp for decoration) and stir in. Pour mixture onto biscuit bases and chill for 2 hours or overnight. Decorate with crème fraiche and lime zest

Strawberry Tart

This recipe is adapted from one by Jocelyn Dimbleby in a Sainsbury’s cook book called Sweet Dreams.

175g plain flour 60g caster sugar 100g butter 300ml creme fraiche 350g strawberries 3 tbsp strawberry jam finely grated rind & juice of 1 orange (3 tbsp) Method

Sift flour & sugar into a bowl. Melt butter in a pan along with the orange rind and 2tbsp juice. Once melted add to bowl and mix well until a smooth dough is formed. Press mixture into a 24cm flan tin. Using hands press over the bottom & up the sides then chill in fridge for 30 mins. Heat over to 200°C. Bake pastry blind for 20 mins until edges are pale golden colour. Take out oven and pour in creme fraiche then return to oven for 10 mins. Once tart is cold decorate with strawbs. Gently heat the strawberry jam with a tbsp of orange juice and spoon over the top to glaze. Chill until ready to serve.

Like chocolate?

You’ll love Smokey!

WIN!!!!

2 TICKETS for Love all things chocolate? Then the chances are you’ll adore a special cat rescued by a Nottinghamshire animal charity – who’s now looking for a real home. Smokey, a rather dashing dark chocolate cat, was found straying until a kind passerby alerted Animal Accident Rescue Unit. The ultimate lap cat, he asks permission before relaxing onto any available lap for a long snooze. At around two years old, this affectionate boy enjoys playing, is tidy in his habits and enjoys self-grooming to remain gorgeous! Just answer the following.....

What does “Cirque Du Soleil” mean in English?

As with all the charity’s animals ready for rehoming, Smokey is neutered, microchipped and litter-trained. Donations to Animal Accident Rescue Unit paid for his flea and worm treatments plus Felv/FIV tests, for which he is clear. All he needs now is a home - could that be with you? To discover more on Smokey call 0115-9671000 (for queries about Smokey only), or email admin@ aaru.org.uk, with your telephone number and postcode for the adoption volunteer to contact you. All homes are checked preadoption, whilst rehoming on busy roads is obviously not possible. Want to help animals like Smokey? His care is possible thanks to the charity’s volunteers – but which very urgently needs more fosterers. For this hugely rewarding role whilst making a massive difference to a vulnerable feline’s life - even for holiday cover – learn more by emailing admin@ aaru.org.uk or calling 0115-9321555, and for other information and animals see www. aaru.org.uk.

faith Bible Reading and the Gospel of Matthew If you would like to know more about this send for these FREE booklets: - part 8 We ended our last piece by explaining Abraham had ‘Your share in God’s Promises’ learned about resurrection from the dead. He realised this needed to happen so he could receive the inheritance of the promised land. This links with the return of Jesus Christ to the earth when he establishes his everlasting Kingdom. It is to accomplish this [and many other things concerning himself] that Jesus was raised from the dead after his crucifixion, then ascended to God’s Right Hand, with the assurance from the angels he would come a second time to the earth [Acts 1:11]. Between his resurrection and ascension Jesus spent six weeks with his chosen disciples ‘speaking of the things about the kingdom of God’. The disciples responded by asking, ‘Will you at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?’ [Acts 1:3 & 6]

That will be the time when the resurrection of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob will take place. The Kingdom will be restored to Israel, and the promise to Mary made by the angel concerning Jesus will be fulfilled [Luke 1:32-33]. This is true hope. More next time.
