Dear Readers Welcome to our Spring edition... Snow in March...well that’s not something we see every year. Here at NG Mags we are sick to death of the cold weather. Lets hope we have a great summer to compensate. Easter is very early this year so we have already started stuffing our faces full of chocolate. Our recipe page features a very gooey chocolate muffin if, like us, you are a chocoholic. And best still they are so easy to make! Enjoy.

Hello Ladies, As I am writing this column there are about 4 inches of snow on the ground and it’s still coming down! Hopefully by the time this goes to print, Spring will be well and truly on its way and the shops will be filling up with lovely pretty Spring/Summer fashion. According to catwalk trends and all the glossy mags there is going to be plenty of vibrant colour out there to buy and all sorts of lovely striking patterns. Pretty much any colour and any pattern are now being put together in fashion. I have to say I do love that there are hardly any “Taboo” rules any more. I remember very clearly when it was unheard of to mix certain colours in an outfit or totally mix patterns .... spots and flowers together. Stripes and checks, anything seems to go. I think fashion has become a lot more fun! The catwalks also have a lot of iridescent and lurex going on - I’m not sure that will be quite so popular with us in the real world but you never know. One thing I have noticed in Boutique 11 is that there seem to be a lot more ladies coming in wanting to try something new, a different style than they have been wearing or a different colour which I think is wonderful. I know that I say it all the time but fashion should be fun and you should experiment a little, you can always go back to something similar if you don’t feel comfortable, but at least try.

One of my customers said to me “Boutique 11 is funking up Mapperley Top” I love it! For me personally the hardest item of clothing to buy is a dress. Like many of you, I’m not the same dress size on the top as the bottom. It really is quite frustrating trying to find a dress that fits a 12 top and 14/16 bottom! Just after Christmas I went cocktail dress hunting .... after trying on 35 dresses (yes, I counted them) I came home totally deflated! I had to rethink the whole cocktail party thing and ended up in some fabulous black palazzo trousers, black, gold and silver glittery top, gold and silver shoes...gorgeous! I think what’s really important is not to force it. You have just got to go with what’s good for your particular body shape. Remember have fun with it! Happy Shopping! Penny, Boutique 11 0115 960 2006 P.S.Dont forget to keep an eye out for Boutique 11 “In store Ladies Evenings” These events are really popular and you get to check out the fabulous new stock with a glass of bubbly!

Council encourages Gedling residents to love where they live Gedling Borough Council is calling for businesses, schools and community groups in the borough to get involved in Love Where You Live – Gedling Borough’s Spring Clean Week, that runs from Saturday 13 to Sunday 21 April. The week aims to inspire, encourage and enable residents across Gedling to improve the environment in the borough for everyone who lives or works there, or for people that visit. The council is writing to groups that may want to get involved, and will give support to clean-ups by providing litter pickers, high-vis vests, gloves and plastic bags and arranging for the filled bags to be collected. The council will also remove any graffiti that it’s told about, and will help groups to promote their clean up events to people who might want to take part. Councillor Jim Creamer, Cabinet member for Environment, said: “Litter is increasing in more and more areas of our countryside and towns. Our staff do a great job, but without support from residents we aren’t able to completely eradicate the environmental crimes of litter, fly tipping and graffiti. The most offending items are the least biodegradable – it takes 20 years for plastic bags to disappear, for example. I’d encourage everyone to get involved in this Spring Clean, and do what they can for the borough.” Any schools, community groups or individuals who’d like to get involved in the Spring Clean Week should call Terry Ball on 0115 901 3615 or email him at terry.ball@gedling.gov.uk

Arnolds Archers by Bob Massey Men from Arnold have fought in many wars. Although weapons have changed over the centuries, the need for soldiers to train and practice has always been important. In 1252 the 'Assize of Arms' Archery Law was passed and all Englishmen were ordered that “every man between the age of 15 to 60 years old should equip themselves with arrows and a bow of his own height.” The skills needed to use a longbow had to be acquired over many years. The training areas were called the Butts. The word Butt is derived from the Anglo French word ‘bouter’ meaning to expel. These Butts were usually on the outskirts of the town or village. Some areas are still called the Butts today. There is one in East Bridgford. The Butts in Arnold was on the south western side of St Marys Church. This area was still called the Butts in 1913. Archers were used either as individual marksmen, or on mass, where they were able to fire at such a rate that this was not surpassed until the invention of the machine gun. At the Battle of Agincourt 1000 arrows were fired every second. King Edward III took the archery laws further and decreed in 1363 “obligatory practice of archery on Sundays and holidays!” it also "forbade, on pain of death, all sport that took up time better spent on war training especially archery practice".

King Henry I later proclaimed that “an archer would be absolved of murder, if he killed a man during archery practise!”. In the Middle Ages nobles were obliged to respond to the call to battle with their own equipment, archers and infantry so it was important that these Archery Laws were followed. The first and biggest battle in which longbow men fought against knights and won was The battle of Crécy. It was a resounding victory for the English and was fought on 26 August 1346 by the Army of King Edward III of England and King Philip VI of France. Many of the rank-and-file soldiers in the English army were raised by 'indenture'. This was supposed to select the best fighters, or at least the young men with the most potential to be good soldiers. In practice, the first port of call was usually the local gaol or dungeon. Every eighth soldier in the army of Edward III was a convicted murderer, a man hoping to escape death by receiving a 'charter of pardon' by killing again in the name of the king. One of these men who fought in the battle of Crecy was Richard Fleecher of Arnhal (Arnold ). After the battle, which he survived, he was pardoned by the king for his good service in France. We have no other details of his crime but it is probably murder.

I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG5 magazine.

So I want to encourage all of you whilst you carry out your spring clean to consider joining a group or activity. I’m sure you’ll find it both rewarding and of course being part of something has real health benefits and it brings our community together. I wish you well and look forward to seeing many of you at the events planned for this year. Carol Pepper Chairman ALAF

Arnold Parochial Charities

In the nineteenth century, two vicars of Arnold established an educational charity for the (then) small town of Arnold. As a result of their work schools were built and bequests were created to improve the education of young people in Arnold. Various areas of land were purchased and the rents from what are now properties built on these lands in the town provide an income which, according to the charity deeds can only be used for assisting the educational needs of young people up to the age of 25 who live in the original parish of Arnold (which now includes the parishes of Woodthorpe and Daybrook) Every year, the trustess of the Arnold Parochial Charities Board make sums of money (about £175 usually) available to young people who are students, usually at colleges or universities. These grants are used mainly for books or equipment of educational excursions or field trips. Anyone who wishes to find out more about this Charity, or who wishes to make a claim, should make contact with the Clerk, Mr Brian West of 73 Arnot Hill Road, Arnold NG5 6LN. The Arnold Local Area Forum pages are sponsored through the: Nottinghamshire County Council Division Fund allocation of Councillors Ged Clarke, Carol Pepper and Mel Shepherd.

Could you be a Volunteer Driver for Gedling Community & Voluntary Services? The drivers are all volunteers who offer their services and cars freely for the benefit of the clients, they are not taxi drivers and without them the scheme cannot run. The clients use the scheme for shopping, medical trips, socialising with friends and even going on holidays. These are people who have difficulty getting out because they cannot access public transport easily. The drivers are reimbursed for their costs in providing the service to clients at the rate of 45p per mile. Each driver completes a comprehensive application form and two references are taken. Driving licences, MOT documents and insurance details are also checked. The drivers use their own cars and depending on their circumstances can offer the service varying amounts of time. The drivers are a friendly, caring team of people who have a concern, for others in their neighbourhood. If you are interested and can offer a few hours please contact Peter: Tel 0115 9871981 or email: transport@gedlingcvs.org.uk

Arnold In Bloom Brrrr…… its been a bad winter, but our thoughts now look forward to the sunshine and working in our gardens to fill it full of colour to cheer us up after a bleak winter. So we start planning our colour scheme, what plants we are going to go for, its now we are thinking about sowing our seeds and visits to the Garden Centre to give us some ideas and pick up some plants. Then the work begins preparing the ground and the planting and watch all of your hard work come alive and enjoy your labour of love come to life with lots of colour, nothing better than sitting on a Summers evening with a glass of wine enjoying nature and all of your labour. We would like you to share this with Arnold In Bloom. We run a competition in the Summer season and ask you to join us this year. You don’t have to have a large garden even the smallest of gardens can look good. We look

our very own 'Little Blue'. Our ‘Little Blue’ is scheduled for take-off on April 27th…..tickets from the Royal Centre on 989 5555 Earthrise (picture left) comes from the first visitors to the moon aboard Apollo 8. They had just rounded the back of the moon . It was Christmas 1968, and the home planet was rising into view above the lifeless lunar surface as they began the long journey back

April 27th sees the new Science on Stage show ‘Little Blue’ featuring music, dance, art and science provided by over 500 performers of all ages, many from NG5 plus others from all across the county. Ten schools, 5 dance schools, a junior choir, an African Drumming group, a chamber choir and a rock band have been working on the project since January. On April 27th they will be supported by professional scientists, musicians and dancers as they perform a typically rhythmic and enchanting piece of music from Karl Jenkins before bringing together the two worlds of art and science to tell the story of one world....

The Royal Centre picture below shows the stage with a projection from the Hubble telescope provided by The School of Physics and Astronomy at Nottingham University.

ARNOLD KILLISICK RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION Just a quick update to let you know what's happening in our area. Firstly, we really would like some new members to join us. We are a small, friendly group and we get together every 6 weeks for meetings. The meetings only last for about an hour and a half. Our meetings are at the Beacon Baptist Hall and you can be sure of a warm welcome should you decide to join us. We are currently working on a couple of projects in the community. Firstly, we are trying to get the entrance to the twitchel between the Killisick Park playing field and Harwood Close

repaired. We are also seeking funding for more benches around Killisick field. Our annual community Fun Day will be held on Saturday the 29th June 2012 from 1 pm – 4 pm in the Beacon Baptist Church Hall and car park, the Killisick Community Centre and Killisick Field. There will be arena events, information stands and a range of activities for the children which are FREE! Please call/text us on 07837952778 or e-mail ng5_akra@yahoo.co.uk

ARNOLD GOLDEN EAGLES This group meets at 10.00 a.m. on the first Friday of every other month (January, March, May, July, September and November) and is specifically for older people,(the over 60s). Our meeting place is in the Wesleyan Reform Church, at the junction of Furlong Street and Burford Street. We usually have one or two speakers at each meeting who tell us about current issues which are particularly relevant to older people. At the moment we have been having speakers informing us about the changes in the Local Health Services and the Ambulance Service, and we have been considering the issue of loneliness among older people and supporting the Age UK campaign to combat loneliness. There is no charge to attend these meetings, and anyone who considers themselves 'elderly' is most welcome. We are a friendly group of about 25 members, and the meetings usually last about one and a half hours. Anyone interested is welcome to come and 'try' a meeting.

4G and your TV

So what is 4G? Well 4G is a new mobile phone system coming soon to the East Midlands, offering a stronger signal with better services than the current 3G. It may however present a problem for your current digital TV service. With the far stronger signal, there is a possibility that if you are close enough to one of the transmitter masts, the signal will interfere with, or possible overwhelm your existing TV signal! The solution will be to fit special filters on the aerial and on each TV and recording device. The Government has promised some financial help with this, but just how far it will go is not certain. This does not affect satellite services i.e. Sky or Freesat, nor Virgin cable which consumers may have to turn to for their TV service, if the filters prove unsuccessful. If you would like to have more information on this, please feel free to call me Alan, TVconfused on 07973 375853

home & garden LOCAL STUDENT BECOMES NATIONAL YOUTH CHANCELLOR Local student, Jamie Read-Tannock, of Arnold Hill Academy has won a national competition to become the UK’s Youth Chancellor 2013.

The 17 year old who is studying Economics, Maths, French and History A-levels was chosen from a field of entrants from across the country to win the title. He has since travelled to London to deliver his winning speech and budget recommendations to the Houses of Parliament. Robin Fugill is Head Teacher at Arnold Hill Academy: “We are thrilled with Jamie’s win. His observations of the current economy and recommendations for change show a real understanding of the issues and challenges that any chancellor faces.” Entrants had to upload a short, 90 second, video to YouTube, outlining their economic policies, including spending and taxation. These were then voted on by young people all over the U.K., with Jamie scoring 35 percent of the popular vote and a comfortable win over his nearest rival with 31 percent. Jamie commented: “The day in London was amazing, I met George Osborne and spoke to him about the government policy on encouraging apprenticeships, made a speech in Committee Room 10 of the Houses of Parliament and collected a brand new iPad 4 as a prize, all as part of the Paying For It Youth Budget launch event. With several groups from different schools, me and the runners up were able to express our views to a group of MPs on subjects including the environment, education, and business.” Take a look at Jamie’s winning entry here … http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_ embedded&v=48st-mK1lsM

Ten tips to help you spring into action : Prune any shrubs required before growth starts to show, if they flower in the spring prune after they have flowered Plant First early seed potatoes Make sure new shoots are protected from slugs Top dress shrub beds or pots with a suitable compost or feed Plant your summer flowering bulbs out Jet wash garden paths that are green or use a suitable algae cleaner Make sure there is adequate support for your climbers and tie in where required Pull out unwanted weeds coming through in pots and shrub beds Give your lawn its first cut on a high setting if required Clear out old hanging baskets ready to be replanted

Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People celebrates the Year of the Snake with the launch of the 5th Nottingham Riverside Festival Dragon Boat Challenge! To celebrate Chinese New Year and the Year of the Snake, Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People has joined with Gable Events to launch the fifth Nottingham Riverside Festival Dragon Boat Challenge. The 2013 Challenge takes place on Sunday 4th August as part of the annual Riverside Festival and is one of the largest and most eagerly anticipated team events in the region. Up to 50 crews representing companies, organisations, clubs and groups of friends from all over the East Midlands are expected to battle it out over the 200m race course on the River Trent at Victoria Embankment. They will all be seeking to knock South Nottingham College off their pedestal as reigning champions whilst raising muchneeded funds for the Hospice. The dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment are provided and each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races. Teams and spectators also benefit from

being part of one of the region’s largest family festivals with a bustling fair and vibrant mix of music, dance, crafts and food from around the world, staged by Nottingham City Council. Carol Lester, Director of Challenge organisers, Gable Events, adds; “The Challenge is a great chance to try something completely different, enjoy a fabulous day out and raise money for Rainbows. It is also a fantastic team building opportunity what better way to get to know what makes your colleagues and competitors tick? August may seem a long way off but we are expecting the Dragon Boat Challenge to be extremely popular this year so we strongly urge teams to sign up early in order to secure a place”. On Thursday 7th February the Year 8 girls basketball team went to Nottingham Trent University to represent Christ the King in the Nottinghamshire County Finals. The girls faced Emmanuel in their first game of the day and battled hard but lost 10-6, which only spurred them on to win the rest of their games. The girls began to do so with convincing wins over Joseph Whitaker (103) and Samworth Academy (22-4), which led them to the semi-finals as the runners up from their pool against Rushcliffe School. The girls showed fantastic attacking skills and flair which clinched the win 12-5, progressing them to the final. The final was between Christ the King and Emmanuel, who they had lost to at the beginning of the tournament. It was extremely close from beginning to end, matching basket for basket. However the brilliant defence work of the Christ the King girls allowed for a counter attack to win 14-12 within the last 30 seconds. Christ the King was awarded Nottinghamshire Schools Basketball Champions and now progress to the next round to represent Nottinghamshire in the East Midlands Schools Basketball Finals.

Best of luck to the girls!

RICHARD BONINGTON ATTEMPT WORLD RECORD!

On Wednesday 6 February at exactly 2.45pm the children from Richard Bonington School in Arnold attempted to beat the Guiness World Record for the most people signing and singing a song. The event was organised by the charity SignHealth and Richard Bonington was one of over a 1000 schools from accross the country taking part. Mrs Downie, the school’s music teacher, said; “All the children entered into the spirit of things and wore a scarf like the Sign2Sing mascot, Ollie the monkey. Each child made a small donation and the school raised £70 for the charity.” The record to beat was 114,000 people and the results are still being collated but well done to all the children and fingers crossed you are now record breakers!

SCHOOL TEAMS MAKE NATIONAL FINALS

Both the Under 13 and Under 15 girls’ football teams from Arnold Hill Academy have made it through to the finals of a tournament run by the ESFA (English Schools’ Football Association)- a tournament that received entries from 400 schools from across England. It’s a fantastic result for a school that has nurtured its girls’ football and is super keen to support the girls all the way to a national final - to be played at a premiership football ground. Louise Wray is the Team Manager and sports teacher at Arnold Hill, who formed the girls’ football squads just 5 years ago when she first joined the school. Since then the rise has been spectacular and the wins have come thick and fast. “When I first arrived at the school there was an obvious playing talent and enthusiasm for the game – we just needed to provide the outlet. It was an immediate success and the girls’ teams have consistently collected a number of tournament wins at county level. All the girls are incredibly excited about the next challenge and are training hard. It is great to see these girls so focussed and dedicated to the sport – the teams are really tightknit and have pulled together girls from a range of abilities and friendship groups. We have had terrific support from the school and local community, and the encouragement and backing we have had from parents has been outstanding. We will all do our very best to shine the spotlight on girl’s football in Nottingham.”

Exciting research project for families in Nottingham

09/11/2012 10:41

Do you have a child aged 2 years 9 months to 4 years 6 months? Does your child constantly move around, fidget and wriggle, not listen to you or talk too much? Is this behaviour difficult for you to manage at home during meal and play times or watching TV, and when you are out and about, shopping, or visiting? Researchers from the University of Nottingham are inviting local families to take part in an innovative research project with the chance to participate in parenting programmes designed to help you manage your child’s behaviour and improve family life. This will take just 1 to 2 hours each week for a period of 12 weeks.

Our next parenting programmes will begin in April 2013 To find out more and take part in a short interview to see if your family might benefit from participating, contact 07881 280369 or email Elvira.Perez@nottingham.ac.uk To advertise call 07817609444 or email: info@ng5.org.uk

chorus roundup It is with the deepest regret that we announce the death of the dear and much loved President of Bestwood Male Voice Choir, Howard Leese OBE. Howard passed away peacefully on Sunday 17 February, in Kings Mill Hospital, surrounded by his wife Marjorie and other family members. Music was a significant part of Howard’s life, having been encouraged by his mother, a soprano soloist, to enter competitive music festivals with his treble voice, before joining church and chapel choirs. Howard joined Bestwood MVC in 1971. He conducted the choir on many occasions, including tours abroad, making many friends over the years. Howard was a true gentleman, in every sense of the word and will be very sadly missed by his family, choir members and all those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Lace City Chorus present Charity Cheque

Lace City Chorus, Nottingham’s premier barbershop chorus for women, were proud to present Macmillan Cancer Support with a cheque for £2500 on Wednesday 27th February 2013. The money was raised by the chorus at its Christmas Harmonies concert in December 2012. The concert was dedicated to one of their members, Gwen Cresswell, who had died in November after a long battle with cancer. “ We are sure Gwen was there in spirit when we performed, and are certain she was there when the cheque was presented, as she had previously been our Treasurer,” said a chorus spokesperson.

Inspector Andy King talks.... It’s amazing what the sight of a uniformed police officer does, not just to criminals but to law-abiding members of the public. Not only do high-visibility patrols prevent and deter crime, they provide reassurance to people who are just trying to live in peace and get on with their day. That’s why we are everywhere at the moment working hard to keep crime on a downward spiral and making sure Arnold residents continue to feel safe when shopping, socialising, working and generally living on our watch. We are also directing patrols to areas that have recently been troubled with antisocial behaviour. You will see us on evenings and weekends engaging with people and tackling issues such as street drinking and alcohol-related misbehaviour. During a recent burglary operation we have noticed there are still residents who do not lock their homes and cars. It may be a sad sign of the times that we can no longer leave car keys in the sun visor or keep our front doors ‘on the latch’, but I’m afraid that’s the world we live in and we need to do all we can to protect ourselves and our property from the opportunistic few who take advantage. Always lock the doors to your home, even if you are in. As the daylight sticks around for longer and the weather (hopefully) starts to get warmer, it is tempting to air out the cobwebs for a Spring clean. Go for it, but be wary of security. Don’t leave windows open in unattended rooms and never leave valuable items on display. Picture the scene, you have the window open in your living room after vacuuming the carpet, then you move into the dining room to do

in there. While the vacuum is roaring in your ears, do you know what’s happening in the living room? Would you hear a thief who slips in and out through the open window in your lounge with your laptop under his arm? Don’t forget your other buildings as well. Make sure your home and contents insurance extends to the belongings in your shed and garage and mark the property inside and register it with a website like www. immobilise.com. The same goes for your car. Lock all doors, including the boot, and close all windows, including the sunroof. Do not tempt thieves by leaving handbags, shopping, sat navs, mobile phones or any other valuable items, including power cables, on display on the seats. Keep your vehicle in a locked garage where possible or park in a well-lit, busy area. We are doing all we can to identify offenders, but we need your help to make it as difficult as possible for them to get to your belongings. Following a number of drug warrants at premises in the area we have seen a number of people prosecuted for producing cannabis. If you suspect someone of being involved in illegal drugs, whether it’s dealing on the street or from a house, or you think someone may be cultivating cannabis plants at their home, report it to police immediately on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously to ‘Rat on a Rat’ on 0800 555 111. Finally, we have a new Beat Manager for the Town Centre. PC Nick Spence joins us from Cotgrave and replaces PC Tony Sahota who has gone to work at Carlton Police Station.

Could you picture someone else in your family? A new campaign was launched in January to recruit an army of local carers to support adults who need help to live independently. Shared Lives, which is being run by the County Council, aims to recruit carers from across the county to help support people with physical or learning disabilities, older people or mental health needs. All carers will receive training and ongoing support and will be paid depending on the needs of the person or people they care for. Shared Lives is looking for carers who can provide a range of support: • Long term accommodation and support: people who have room in their home and are willing to have someone to live as part of their family for some time. This may be months or years. • Short breaks: people who can offer a short break for someone while the people who normally support them are having a holiday or have to be away.

• Regular short-term support: people who can offer support in the day to promote independence and help people become part of their community. Councillor Kevin Rostance, Chair of the Adult Social Care and Health Committee, said: “We are looking for caring people who have some time and space in their lives to help an adult. You may be a retired person who has room in your home; a parent who has spare time in the day or someone who works in the week, but has evenings or weekends free. “Shared Lives is a vital scheme which will help older or disabled people to experience ordinary life with real relationships. Please get in touch if you think you can help.” Anyone who is interested in becoming a Shared Lives carer can visit www.nottinghamshire.gov. uk/sharedlives, email: sharedlives@nottscc. gov.uk or phone 0300 500 80 80.

Red Nose Day at Pinewood School who entertain the nation whilst urging them to donate generously.

Vernon Coaker MP joined staff and pupils at Pinewood Infant School & Nursery, Arnold on Red Nose Day for Comic Relief where Vernon was asked to judge the Cake Competition. Vernon loved the chance to join in the fun with the children whilst helping to raise lots of money which will help change the lives of many across the UK and Africa. Since Comic Relief was launched in 1988 millions of pounds have been raised by the public, celebrities and particularly comedians

Held every 2 years thousands of people do fun things for money at home, at work, in schools and, well, just about everywhere and this has proved an outstanding event helping hundreds of projects. Comic Relief works tirelessly to support some of the poorest and most disadvantaged people in the UK and Africa and I hope readers of Ng5 enjoyed any fundraising events in which they were involved.

Inheritance Trust Scam warning for Notts residents Nottinghamshire residents are warned to be on their guard about a scam targeting pensioners across the county. Telephone cold callers have targeted elderly consumers to arrange home visits by salesmen offering ‘free legal advice’. The salesmen then demand an up-front fee of around £2,000 to set up a ‘trust’ which they falsely describe as a ‘foolproof’ way to ‘ring fence’ consumers homes and savings from being used to fund future care home fees. Nottinghamshire County Council’s Trading Standards team are investigating several companies who have been operating in the county. Two have recently shut down, leaving consumers out of pocket without the products that they paid for and unable to obtain a refund. Mark Hughes, Trading Standards Manager at the County Council, said: “The companies involved in this scam have been targeting vulnerable people and their

sales patter has been very persuasive. “Many targeted people were advised not to seek legal advice as solicitors ‘don’t understand’ the trusts, which is complete nonsense. “A reputable solicitor would advise any client of the consequences of setting up this type of trust, including the tax implications and the risks involved. “We recommend people to ignore all cold callers to avoid being the victim of a scam.” People who think they may be a victim of this or any other scam should contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 08454 040506. People who are responsible for paying for their own care costs should always seek specialist information and advice before entering into any commitments. PayingForCare, a not-for-profit organisation, provides valuable information on all aspects of self funded longterm care. Contact on freephone 0808 208 9994.

‘HAPPINESS IS A HOME’ WOOFS ROCKY!

CRAZY PAWS Dog Grooming, Micro-chipping & Animal Boarding

Towards the end of last year, there seemed little hope that a dog rescued by Nottinghamshire animal charity, Animal Accident Rescue Unit (AARU), would find a new home for 2013. This volunteer-led local charity is not one to give up easily though … and success has followed with the dog being given a new forever home! ‘Rocky’ - a Golden Retriever-cross dog had a ‘rocky’ time indeed during 2012, having been neglected and left as a stray. After being rescued and cared for by fosterers at AARU, this fine eight year old is now enjoying life in his new permanent home. To see Rocky in action for yourself watch his video on the YouTube website under ‘AARU Rocky’. The charity, however, currently has in its care plenty more affectionate cats and dogs who would equally love a permanent home. Please do pay them a virtual visit at www.aaru. org.uk or email admin@aaru.org.uk for details. All homes are checked prior to adoption. Animal Accident Rescue Unit is entirely run by volunteers spanning drivers, telephonists, fundraisers and fosterers – and more are always needed and welcome! Why not do something to help vulnerable animals like Rocky this year? Everyone has something to offer: whether it is office skills, fundraising, driving or offering a temporary or permanent animal home – all help needy local animals to safety and security. To discover how you can help – including by donating crucial funds to continue this essential work, email admin@ aaru.org.uk or by call 0115-931 4274. All other calls to the charity must be made using its Lifeline telephone number 0115-932 1555.
