Arnold’s Earliest Map by Bob Massey
There was a series of maps of Sherwood Forest and the villages produced by Richard Banks in 1609 on the instructions of King James I. These maps were drawn to raise extra revenue from the royal estates. Sherwood Forest was all the Kings land at this time and all therein, including the villages, were subject to forest law. The oldest detailed map of Arnold is the one from 1609 that shows not only the roads and tracks but also the fields and individual houses. All the land that was taxable is shown, together with a key to the names of the owners of each section large and small. The original village of Arnold existed around the site of the village church. This was built on an outcrop of rock so that it was defendable in times of trouble. It also commanded the village water supply, essential in times of an attack. This water came out of the ground at this point in the form of a spring. Near to the church was the Manor house, the second most important building in the village. There is a house still on this site making this the longest continuously occupied site in the town. The 1609 map shows the old village around the church called Top of the Town which originally extended only as far as the Robin Hood and Little John pub. There is some evidence to suggest that this site is the location of the original village pub. Although the present building of this name has so far only been traced back to 1726. There were four pubs in Arnold by 1646 and an unnamed pub, an earlier building, was possibly one them on the present site. The water from the spring at the church and from other springs, including one on Coppice Road (originally call Spout Lane), flowed into the Daybrook. This stream still runs down the centre of Front Street, now covered and underground (except in times of flood like 2013!) .
As the village expanded, farm houses were built along the banks of the Daybrook with fields extending away from these houses. These represented the new village and were beyond the village cross which originally stood outside the present library. This cross represented one end of the village with the church at the other. The cross was standing in the centre of the Daybrook to ask Gods protection over not only the village but also its essential water supply. The village was isolated from Nottingham by four miles of forest and half a mile from the Mansfield Road with only a small track leading from the main roads to the rural community. As the village was in the centre of Sherwood Forest the deer would come into the village to drink from the Daybrook and also eat the villagers crops. A deer fence was built on one side and a deer leap (a ditch and fence ) were constructed on each side of the village effectively creating a barrier around the community further isolating it from the outside world.
I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG5 magazine.

s Split: w ie v e R n o t Bur . Or Her?.... .. ? im H r O . ?.. lking To Me a T u o Y e r A After just over a decade of awful box office and critical bombs such as the painful The Last Airbender in 2010 and the mind numbingly boring After Earth in 2013, the release of The Visit in 2015 seemed to declare M. Night Shyamalan’s return to well-crafted, enjoyable film making. Now, with the release of Split, will M. Night be able to remain on this re-ascension to greatness, or falter once again? The story of Split sees three teenage girls: the outcast with obvious deep emotional issues, Anya Taylor-Joy as Cass Cooke, the popular girl who has never had to worry about anything in her life before, Haley Lu Richardson as Claire Benoit, and her best friend, Jessica Sula as Marcia. The girls are kidnapped by a sinister be-spectacled man called Kevin (James McAvoy) and taken to a locked bedroom, with adjoining bathroom, of course. When McAvoy re-enters wearing a dress with a whole new set of mannerisms, it is clear this isn’t a straightforward hostage situation. And so the horror begins as the girls must escape from a man with 23 personalities all stuck in his head and fighting for dominance. With his hands all over both the directing and script writing for this movie, M. Night has crafted a truly fascinating and enthralling plot that had me constantly trying to figure out just how McAvoy’s character, or characters, worked. But the excellent scripting would have been for naught if there wasn’t an incredibly talented actor to bring to life a vast majority of these 23 unique personalities in a believable and distinguishable enough way. Thankfully with James McAvoy at the helm, this daunting task was in the best hands. While McAvoy has starred in a myriad of other films it is in Split that he really gets to flex his muscles, both figuratively and literally. His range in performance, effortlessly switching from a disillusioned nine year old, to a sassy but firm middle-aged woman, then sliding perfectly into a man obsessed with the intricacies of history, was nothing less than astounding. The unpredictability of who the three teenage girls were going to have to encounter next
added to just how powerful McAvoy’s screen presence was each and every time he stepped on screen. It is this tension that McAvoy brings to the film that makes it as intense as hell. In the brutal game of cat and mouse that the finale of this movie becomes, my heart was pounding as the girls desperately tried to escape the many clutches of this unstoppable man. Even before all that, it feels as if the girls’ lives are always hanging on a thread. Overall with Split, M. Night is definitely back with a bang. If this fascinating story, that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout, coupled with McAvoy’s awe inspiring range of characters and acting chops doesn’t prove that to you, I don’t know what will. Split = 8.5/10 © Sam Burton (aged 19)

GEDLING SPORTS FORUM – who are we?
Gedling Sports Forum is an independent voice for sports clubs in Gedling. The Clubs, through their representatives, are the Forum; we meet four times a year to discuss the various matters that affect the different sports. This is all about sharing good practice and finding out what is happening in our own and other sports. If a club or sport has a concern then we may be able to help. In recent years, the Forum has lobbied on behalf of the swimming clubs of Gedling to Gedling Borough Council about the cost of hiring the leisure centre facilities and achieved a freeze on increased pool rental costs for a period of 12 months. The Forum also sent representation about the proposal for wind turbines overlooking the Poplars playing field in Burton Joyce. The proposal was for two, there is only one now and it is sited in a slightly different location so as not to cause problems for the sportsmen and women taking part in cricket and archery on the field. As Chairman of the Gedling Sports Forum, Stephanie Roberts is part of the Gedling Borough Council Playing Pitch Strategy Steering Group, speaking up for more and improved facilities for the clubs and teams in Gedling. The Forum is completely independent of the Council, GBC provide us with a meeting room but their representatives only attend our meeting by invitation. Is your club based in Gedling? Is your club involved with the Gedling Sports Forum? If not, please join us, together we can make a difference. For more information about the Gedling Sports Forum please contact the Chairman Stephanie Roberts by email gedlingsportsforum@yahoo.com. We can also be found on Facebook.

Uncertain times I
’m sure there are many people out there, reading this, who are feeling scared and anxious in these uncertain times, with Brexit, the American election result and the ongoing economic crisis all contributing to these feelings. Whatever your beliefs or politics there is little denying that it can feel a little like standing on shifting sands at the moment and for people who already suffer from feelings of stress and anxiety, this can start to feel unbearable. So what can we do when we start to feel as though our negative feelings about uncertainty are beginning to overwhelm us? As mentioned in a previous article, the first and easiest thing we can do when we feel the physical effects of stress or anxiety in ourselves is to take our focus to our breathing. By focusing on our breathing, on slowing it down and breathing in for a slow count of four and out for a slow count of five, we can stop ourselves from spiralling into the rapid breathing, racing heartbeat and hyperventilation that can leave us feeling panicked. But breathing techniques aside, what else can we do? I’m sure many readers will be familiar with the Serenity Prayer, with its request to “grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference”. It can be very important when dealing with feelings around uncertainty to know what you do have the power to affect and what you don’t. As hard as it may seem, as Elsa in Frozen would suggest, sometimes you just have to let it go. Many of the things going on in this world right now are so huge and beyond our control that we do have
to let them go, especially if you suffer from anxiety disorders. If you are someone who does suffer with anxiety, mindfulness techniques can be useful in allowing you to experience the thoughts without getting attached to them. As the next bit of the Serenity Prayer states, it can also be incredibly helpful when struggling with feelings of uncertainty to take action! Taking action, however small, can help you feel as though you are back in control of things and as though you are doing something. Knowing that you are doing something can help quell those feelings of helplessness that can come with uncertainty. Join an environmental action group or volunteer to help those affected by the economic crisis; write to your MP with your concerns or join with your neighbours to set up a neighbourhood watch scheme. Whatever you do will be better for your mental health and your state of mind than simply worrying and becoming overwhelmed by your feelings. However, if you find that your negative feelings around uncertainty are having a major impact on your life then it might be worth finding a good talking therapist to help you work through them in more detail. Although some people find it hard to get help for their mental health issues, the stigma around them is fading fast as more and more people realise that it is nothing to be ashamed of. You wouldn’t feel bad about getting a physical complaint seen to and nor should you about getting a mental or emotional health issue dealt with. Times really are changing in all manner of ways...

Nottingham River Cruise Company Makes Short List for Group Travel Awards 2016 Relocation will make them the best! Princess River Cruises have been selected by GTO Magazine as Runners Up for best canal or riverboat operator for groups 2016.
Coming Soon! Our new building will be ready for us to occupy early Spring 2017
Now in their 20th year of operation from the Park Yacht Club in Colwick, Princess River Cruises are relocating to a brand new site 400 metres down river to a purpose built location. A unique river location opposite the racecourse in Colwick. This new location will create the opportunity for the company to improve on its services to include a land based bar function room with parking facilities, ensuring their passengers have a quality pre-cruise establishment, as well as having the facility to offer the people of Nottingham a pristine riverside location in which to hold functions such as weddings, corporate hospitality, family anniversaries etc. The proposed move is expected to happen early in April 2017, and until then services will carry on as normal.

Something for all ages! Drayton Manor Park & Zoo is a theme park resort in Tamworth, Staffordshire. Built in 1949, the park covers 280 beautiful acres of lakes and parkland, and is packed with great rides and attractions. A family run business since George & Vera Bryan OBE first purchased the home of the former Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel (famous for starting the police force) and opened it up to the public in 1950. Today, the park features some of the biggest, wettest and scariest rides around, a zoo with over 100 species from around the world, a 4d cinema and a number of arcades. There are plenty of rides for everyone from the ever popular Thomas Land™ boasting a multitude of great rides for the little ones to the more daring Shockwave, Maelstrom & Apocalypse, with its 54 metre plummet to Earth which can be done seated or standing, be prepared to scream! In between these rides there are plenty of favourites for the whole family that bring back nostalgic memories from my childhood including the Flying Dutchman, The Big Wheel & the Buffalo rollercoaster. To top it all off you can stay on the campsite or enjoy a stay in the lovely Drayton Manor Hotel, which has 15 Thomas & Friends™ themed rooms. We visited as a family of five, including little ones, teens and adults. We spent the whole day there, with plenty to keep us all busy and entertained. We could have done another day. Opening hours can be found on the website but generally the park opens at 9.30am, rides start at 10.30am & close at 5pm. We could see why they have 1.5 million visitors each year. We’re at that time of year again when a percentage of the population are gearing up taking exams. As with most anxiety inducing situations the simple answer is to take control: • Preparation – It’s essential to know what you should be revising and that you have all notes, books and information sources to hand. • Plan – From a revision plan to understanding your exam timetables make sure you have planned meticulously. Vary your revision habits intermittently so that you don’t get bored. • Productivity – We all work differently and I’ve always found that studying in the early morning was my most productive time. If you’re an early bird or night owl recognise what works for you and plan your revision accordingly. • Rest – It’s a proven fact that the mind can only concentrate for about 45 minutes at one stretch. Take regular breaks from your revision so that you can retain information more effectively. • Eat & Drink Well – To avoid blood sugar levels fluctuating and causing energy dips try to eat a high protein/low sugar diet. Avoid processed foods and snacking on biscuits and chocolates. Similarly, sugary drinks can mess with your energy levels. Stick to water to keep hydrated. • Exercise – Walk the dog ( if you don’t have one – borrow one!) swim or cycle …..anything to boost those happy hormones which will reduce your stress levels. • Perspective – Above all else remember that exam stress won’t last forever and adrenaline levels on the day will potentially help carry you through. When it comes to employability later in life most employers look for more than just exam results when assessing candidates – attitude, communication skills and selfconfidence are also important. I wish you the very best of luck in your endeavours! © Helen Jones

Another record for the Notts Guided Walks booklets
Demand continues to grow for the Notts Guided Walks booklet with 8000 printed for 2017 supported by a great website. Most of the walks are short - the longest is 8 miles. There is a large section in the book for health walks, perfect for less able or recovering walkers. These walks are taken by trained leaders as part of a national scheme. Recently published research on the benefits of easy exercise is featured in the booklet and on the website. Remember just a small amount of regular exercise can make a massive difference!

Year of the Rooster by John Parr
New Register Office Now Open In Arnot Hill Park Nottinghamshire’s newest register office officially opened it’s doors to the public at the beginning of January. Arnot Hill is a Grade II listed building surrounded by beautiful parkland in Arnold. 53 wedding ceremonies have already been booked in the historic building and bookings are also being taken for baby naming day ceremonies, renewal of vows and other ceremonies. Councillor Glynn Gilfoyle, Chair of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Community Safety Committee, said: “We are delighted to open this landmark building in the heart of Arnold, which provides a wonderful venue for weddings and other ceremonies. “With many people no doubt getting engaged over the festive period, now is a great time to think about where to get married. We believe that Arnot Hill offers the perfect balance between style and affordability.” Find out more about Arnot Hill at http:// www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/celebrate/ venues/arnot-hill or phone 0300 500 80 80 to book.

During my formative years, Kiddier Road, Arnold was surrounded by green fields. Rationing was still in full swing and people were encouraged to cultivate and supplement their meager food rations!!! Sunday morning was always a good time when friends and neighbours would congregate on their allotments and small holdings. We were lucky, as my Dad’s patch was behind our house. Further along, Dad and my Uncle Ged rented out another piece of land where we kept a horse, chickens, ducks, rabbits and a few pigs. It was my job each morning before I went to school to feed and water them. Feeding the pigs was a bit hazardous. Hungry pigs like to get their ‘snouts’ into the slop bucket, squealing and pushing, resulting in me becoming as smelly as them! Tom, our grey horse, hated pulling the four wheeled dray, so we sold him on and later learned he had become a champion hunter. Dad and uncle Ged became aware that the hens had become a little less productive, so they bought a cockerel from one of the neighbours, hoping to give the hens more encouragement!! Unbeknown to me this proud, handsome bird had quite a reputation and guarded his brood of hens with purpose and sharp watchful eyes!!! One weekend, he was out in the long grass guarding his brood so I decided to play with the chicks. Suddenly, after hearing a loud squawk, I Iooked up and saw the cockerel charging toward me, neck outstretched, beak thrust forward, with wings spread, to add menace. I ran toward my dad screaming. Unfortunately the bird caught up with me, and down I went in a flurry of feathers. My dad was there instantly and applied the birds coup de graĉe. Thereafter the hens became ‘broody’-eventually producing lovely ‘fluffy’ chicks.

What an enchanting restaurant! I was hooked from the minute I stepped out of the car. From the amazing smells wafting through the air, right through to the flaming puddings that were cooked at the end of our table! We visited the restaurant on a Sunday afternoon with the whole family (6 of us) and were greeted by the authentically dressed staff who really looked after us. Suraj, the manager, who has a great rapport with customers, was very helpful when we were trying to decide what to order. The restaurant itself is traditionally Indian, decorated with vibrant colours & fabulously colourful pictures. It boasts beautiful lakeside views with amazing sunsets - very romantic. We chose the Sunday special; a selection of 5 starters and 5 mains with accompaniments for £19.99 each and Suraj kindly offered to do our daughter a veggie version, which she loved. The other starters were a delicately spiced Malai Chicken (£6.95) and Samosa Chaat (£5.95) which was amazing. For mains, the kids had Chicken Korma (£11.95) and to accompany their dishes they had nan and pilau rice (around £3.50 each). All in all the food was delicious and beautifully presented, especially the starters with their hollowed out tomato lanterns! A palette cleanser of mango sorbet was served between courses and the hot towels are a wonder to behold! I’m not going to spoil it but they need to be seen to be believed. We managed to squeeze in three puddings and boy are we glad we did! We chose; pistachio kulfi served in a spun sugar basket (£4.95), crepes suzette (£7.95) and pineapple flambe (£7.95), both of which were cooked right there at our table, flames & all. Overall a truly magical journey with delicious food, a live pianist and wonderful surprises along the way. If you are looking for something extra special, Mewar Haveli is the place to go. We will definitely be returning and the sooner the better.

Spring I love the onset of Spring. As the evenings draw out and the nip in the morning air recedes a little, everything starts to come to life. From blossom on the cherry trees to the new born lambs, Spring heralds the opportunity of a new year and the inspiration for lighter dishes and fresh seasonal ingredients. As early Spring begins to turn to summer there is a wealth of produce to choose from with rhubarb, new potatoes, oysters and leeks in March, to wild garlic, sea bass, crab and spring lamb in April to asparagus, artichoke, mint and mackerel in May, the list is endless. Springtime sees a flurry of festivals and special days, some dating back many hundreds of years, others more modern – from the well-known such as Mothering Sunday, Shrove Tuesday and, of course, Easter, to the less well-known such as “hare pie scrambling” in Leicestershire, cheese rolling and eel throwing in Cambridgeshire and the “Obby Oss” dance festival in Padstow. Well, as spring is in the air and the weather is warming, here are a few of my favourite springtime ingredients in recipes that won’t leave you slaving over a hot stove all day. Traditionally, it was considered best to enjoy oysters when there is an “r” in the
month, this is because the sea is cooler in the northern hemisphere and the oysters are not spawning, in truth, with modern storage methods this is less important. Still, if you are a proper “ostreophile” (oyster lover) you might want to hold with this tradition. Personally, raw oysters with a shallot vinaigrette suit me just fine, but for those who prefer their oysters cooked, try throwing them on the first barbecue of the year and serving them with garlic, parmesan and paprika. Spring wouldn’t be spring without lamb for most of us, especially at Easter, but how about ringing the changes a little and put yourself in the mood for your summer holidays with a Greek inspired roast leg of lamb with lots of oregano and olives. To follow, try the new season’s rhubarb, Yorkshire forced rhubarb, grown in the dark and harvested by candlelight will be in the shops from January, but our local Nottinghamshire produce will be in the shops by March. Of course, you can’t beat a good rhubarb crumble but how about something a bit lighter for spring? Try this spiced rhubarb with yoghurt recipe for a lighter alternative, and a great way to use up those leftover Christmas dates!

Barbecued Oysters with garlic, paprika and Parmesan butter If you prefer your oysters raw, try serving with a simple red wine and shallot vinegar (peel and finely chop shallots, mix with a good quality red wine vinegar and leave to infuse for 1 hr). If you prefer your oysters cooked, impress your guests with this flavoursome recipe for the first barbecue of the year! Ingredients Serves 4 12 oysters (ready shucked unless you really know what you are doing!) Chunks of good bread to serve For the butter 60g butter, at room temperature 1tsp flat leaf parsley, finely chopped 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1tsp cayenne pepper 2tsp smoked paprika 1tsp onion powder 50g Parmesan, grated 2 garlic cloves, crushed Method (heat the barbecue until the coals are white) In a small bowl, beat the butter until soft, then add all the ingredients and mix well. Lay a piece of cling film out on a clean surface. Spoon the butter into the centre then roll into a sausage shape and seal tightly. This will keep in the fridge for up to a week. Slice a round of the butter and place on top of each oyster. Place (shell down!) on the barbecue and grill for approximately 6 mins or until bubbling. Serve with some “proper bread to mop up the juices.
Greek inspired Roast Lamb Ingredients 1 large leg of Lamb (about 3kg) 6 garlic cloves 1 large bunch fresh oregano (you could use dried if necessary) Zest and juice 1 lemon 6 tbsp olive oil New potatoes (approx 4 per person) 400g can chopped tomatoes Large handful pitted Greek olives, chopped Method (pre-heat oven to 240C) Pound the garlic, half the oregano, lemon zest and a generous pinch of salt in a pestle and mortar, then add the lemon juice and a slug of olive oil. Stab the lamb all over with a sharp knife, then pat the mix all over the lamb leg, pushing as much of the herb paste into the slits as possible. Toss the new potatoes in the remaining olive oil & herb paste and place in the roasting tin around the lamb. Roast for 20 mins then reduce the temperatures to 180C. Roast for 1hr and 15 mins for medium-rare, adding another 15 mins for medium. Baste the lamb once or twice with the juices and turn the potatoes. When the lamb is done, remove from the tin and allow to rest. Throw the rest of the oregano in with the potatoes and keep warm. Place the roasting tin over a medium heat, add the canned tomatoes and chopped olives to the pan juices, then simmer for a few mins, add a pinch of sugar if the tomatoes are a little bitter. Serve the lamb with the potatoes and sauce and a simple salad. Side Salad Mix 100ml olive oil with 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar and a pinch of salt. Finely shred 2 Cos lettuces and slice 6 spring onions. Crumble over approx 100g feta cheese. Toss everything together with freshly ground black pepper just before serving.
Roasted Spiced Rhubarb with Dates and Yoghurt Ingredients - Serves 4
Roughly 28g unsalted, shelled raw chopped pistachios or flaked almonds 50g dates, pitted and chopped 2 teaspoons finely grated orange zest Half teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons runny honey 1 tablespoon caster sugar 3 large rhubarb stalks cut into 2 inch pieces Quarter teaspoon cinnamon 140g natural Greek Yoghurt Method (pre-heat oven to 170C) Gently toast nuts in a dry frying pan tossing frequently until golden brown. Cool and chop. Place dates, zest, vanilla, 1 tablespoon of the honey (and sugar to taste) and roughly 200ml water in a small saucepan and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer gently until dates are very soft and liquid is reduced by about a half – 8-10 minutes. Place rhubarb in a small baking dish and toss with cinnamon and the date mixture, then place in the oven and roast for approximately 25 mins (turning halfway through) until rhubarb is tender but still holding its shape. Whisk the yoghurt together with the remaining 1 tablespoon of honey in a small bowl, serve with the spiced rhubarb and juices on top and sprinkle with the pistachios.

Wow, you’re ON IT- a whole new chapter starts this month.
You’ve been privately ruminating about something which has caused conflict or division. You’ve dug deep to form your true opinion, and now it’s time to tentatively make a move and test the waters with what others believe. Once you have gauged the reaction, you’ll feel more confident and ready to state what you want to say or do.
It’s time to reveal your hand…
You’ve had a taste of something that felt very ‘right’, and now you want more. It’s clear what needs to change and where your immediate focus should now be. This is a powerful transition, but it won’t feel difficult. You’re fuelled by creative energy and passion to make this thing happen! Go for it!
Fire signs- Leo, Aries, Sagittarius
Water signs- Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio

Quite frankly, it’s a Big Month so buckle up.
A little bit of hibernation is no bad thing every now and again.
You know, deep down, you’ve been yearning to change direction and head towards a new, more heartfelt goal or destination. Something unexpected is going to happen this month which will, if you seize the moment, change this inward yearning into action. Don’t have doubts: if you resist, you’ll be forced into action one way or another, so use this opportunity to change course towards YOUR goal.
Peace and prosperity don’t often ‘just happen’, they come about through design. You know this, and you feel you need to do some serious thinking and reviewing about how safe, secure and content you feel at home, at work, and in yourself. Something needs reinforcing or fixing. Take some time to dwell on what that is, and how you can make things better.

Veterinary Nurses A Veterinary Nurse or VN works as a member of the veterinary team, providing expert nursing care for sick animals and works in close partnership with the vets. VN’s carry out technical work and are skilled in undertaking a range of diagnostic tests, medical treatments and minor surgical procedures, under veterinary direction. They take blood tests and place patients on intravenous drips, they can redress wounds and alongside the vet, monitor & maintain the anesthetics during a pet’s surgery. VN’s also look after inpatients and patients recovering after surgery - these animals need extra special care and our nurses give that extra love & care to help make the pets feel more at ease.
To train to be a VN you can either do a vocational course within a practice or enroll at college and do a full time degree course. After qualifying you are eligible to be enrolled onto the RCVS list of registered Veterinary Nurses. As well as working in a practice - with small, exotic, equine and large animal patients, VNs can also work in industry, research and education roles. Locally Nottingham Trent Uni and Bottle Green training at Melbourne both run nursing courses. Alternatively the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeon or British Veterinary Nursing Association websites give more information/links.
At Oak House our nurses play a significant role in the education of owners about maintaining the health of their pets. They give specific advice about caring for your new puppy or kitten and they run clinics to help support owners to get their pets to lose weight or demonstrate how to look after your pet’s teeth by brushing.

Special Food For Special Cats
Local charity, Animal Accident Rescue Unit, is appealing for food donations for two special boys: Stitch and Ollie. Stitch (14yrs) one of the charity's permanent foster cats, has a sensitive tummy due to a stomach tumour. Sadly, this condition is not treatable, but he still enjoys life including his food – and ‘Felix – as good as it looks’ seems to help him.

Ollie (6yrs), pictured above, also has digestion problems but thankfully these are controlled by his diet, and he manages best on 'James Wellbeloved House Cat Biscuits', a hypoallergenic dry food for indoor cats. Ollie is a lovely boy and is available for adoption. His fosterer says: ‘He’ll make a fantastic pet and is most affectionate.’ For details on how to adopt Ollie, visit the website: www.animalaccident.org.uk/ollie-avery-special-boy-looking-for-a-very-specialhome. Meanwhile, food donations for Stitch and Ollie are gratefully received – just call the Pet Food Co-ordinator on 07949-780918 or email admin@aaru.org.uk, or donate towards the cost of their food via www. animalaccident.org.uk/donate/. Totally reliant on volunteers and donations, the charity urgently needs more cat and dog fosterers in the Nottingham area. It does not deal with healthy strays/unwanted pets, but helps neglected, injured or vulnerable animals and birds. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should leave a detailed message on 0115-9321555. For all rescued animals also still needing homes visit www.animalaccident.org.uk.

Up to 50 crews from all over the East Midlands are expected to battle it out over the 200m race course. Spring Into Safer Living As we enter Spring, it’s important to be aware of opportunist thieves, who may take advantage of your vacant home and enter through any doors or windows which have been left open in the warm weather. You will need to know how to stay safe in the Spring and be aware of the steps you can take to protect your property. Lock your doors and windows: Whilst it’s tempting to keep doors and windows open to make the most of the fresh, spring breeze, this is a perfect opportunity for thieves to enter your home and remove any valuable goods. Make sure you lock your doors and windows before going to bed or leaving the house. Security outside your home: Never leave garages or sheds unlocked, especially if they connect to your property. Visible burglar alarms and carefully directed security lighting can deter burglars. Make sure alarms stop sounding after 20 minutes and lights don’t disturb your neighbours.
should suspend any deliveries, such as milk and newspapers and ask a trusted friend or neighbour to keep an eye on your property. Try to make your home look occupied while you are not there - timer switches can be used on lamps or your radio. Students heading home for Easter: Easter is a popular time for students to head home, meaning a popular time for opportunist thieves to enter your University house. If you are leaving Nottingham for the Easter break, make sure you take your laptop and any other valuable items with you – do not leave them behind, even if you don’t need them. Don’t leave any empty electrical boxes outside your home, as this could indicate that you have something worth stealing. If you would like to speak to your local police, call us on 101.
Going on holiday: As Easter approaches, thieves will be aware that homes may be vacant as families make the most of the Bank Holidays.
