DISCOVERING GENIUS IN CHILDREN “Do not train a child to learn by force or harshness; but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.”– Plato
A
s a teacher and creative writer, I often feel that the modern world is still catching up to Plato. The genius he speaks of in the quote above is something I have witnessed. To see it is life changing. It brings a new level of respect for the child. Looking at the ideas of children this way helps us to see their innate genius; being aware of the many types of intelligence is the next step. Each child has their own unique blend of intelligence types. They may show a strong specialism in one
area or be a “general” - showing broad skill in many areas. If we were all brilliant at mathematics, but no-one could build a house, we’d soon be in trouble as a species. As a child plays, their brain is wiring itself, developing and specializing, thus it is through playfulness that genius emerges. By engaging in creative play with our kids, and by understanding the many forms genius can take, we help them to develop into confident, creative and happy adults.
The Monster Mash “ROAR!” Dad jumps out from behind the garden wall, arms raised with eyes as bright as birthday cake candles. Alex takes a step backwards, his mouth falling open; then he giggles. Beneath what looks like green mashed potato, Dad has a monster snarl-smile. Then, with a chuckle, his hands start to wave about as he speaks. “Thing is, Alex, I’m writing a monster story and I need to get in character, you know, see things from the monster’s perspective. Tell me, was I scary?”
monster masks! Do you want to make one too?”
Alex giggles again, “Um, a bit. Maybe jump a bit more?”
Fingers wigglin,’ Go a ticklin,’
“Yeah,” says Dad, “you’re right. Do you think I need claws?”
I’m gonna tickle you!
Alex jumps on the spot, grinning; “And fangs. You need fangs. Pointy and sharp.” Dad nods as if he is hearing wise advice, his gooey green face is a picture of thought. “And,” Alex continues, ”our teacher says you have to know what your character wants. So, what does the monster want?” “Oh, that’s easy,” says Dad, “the monster wants to win a monster competition. He has to be the scariest monster in monster-land. If he loses he has to be nice to everyone and, for a monster, that’s kinda rough. So, do you want to help me make fangs?” “Oh, yes please,” says Alex, “or a paper mache mask!” “Great idea,” says Dad, cleaning the potato from his face. “Let’s make
“Yeah!” says Alex, nodding quickly, “but I want mine to be red and you have to call me, ‘Blarg The Bloody.’ You can be, ‘Achoo the Boogeyman.’” Dad laughs, “I get to be ‘Achoo the Bogeyman’, do I? Because I hear that Bogeymen are all expert ticklers. In fact, they are the best.” Dad raises his two tickling fingers and begins ‘The Tickle Song’ in his best monster voice, Ribs, arms, bellies too! Alex screams and runs; Dad jogs behind him, fingers wiggling, smile wide. Their laughter blends like an old familiar tune, as natural as the birdsong, and the last crumbs of green mashed potato mark their trail.
WHAT’S NEW AT WEST MIDLAND SAFARI PARK IN 2018?
will be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of parts of the set used in the movie inside the ‘Early Man Secret Cave’, which will be at the Park until Easter.
Staff at West Midland Safari Park are preparing for their best year yet, as the attraction prepares to celebrate its 45th year.
Celebrating their first birthdays, guests can see how much the gorgeous babies of 2017 have grown during the past year. Fennessy the Rothschild’s giraffe is now a staggering 10-feettall and is showing no signs of slowing down! Also on the Safari Drive-through is beautiful baby Fahari, the second southern white rhino born at the Park within two years. Full of confidence and charisma, the healthy youngsters have been a great success for the longevity of both species, whose numbers are dramatically dropping in the wild.
The busy schedule for 2018 includes celebrating the birthdays of animals born last year, an education partnership with art exhibit Worcester Stands Tall and the opening of their brand new prehistoric exhibit - Ice Age - which is due to arrive in Spring. Continuing the journey from The Land of the Living Dinosaurs exhibit, the £1 million project will feature a huge volcano, ice cave and ferocious, life-sized animals, taking guests on an interactive exploration through time. Adventurers will be able to walk amongst a gigantic woolly mammoth, a fierce smilodon and an enormous paracatherium, to name just a few. As well as the brand new exhibit, the Park is also the official Education Partner for Worcester Stands Tall - a public art exhibition of decorated giraffe sculptures due to be dotted around the streets of Worcester during the summer of 2018. The event, facilitated by Wild In Art and brought to the city by St Richard’s Hospice, will enable local schools and renowned artists to design and decorate the sculptures. Larger sculptures will eventually be auctioned off to raise money for the hospice.
West Midlands Safari Park is now open daily for its summer season. Standard admission charge is £24.00 for adults, £19.00 for children aged 3-15 and £22.00 for concessions. Admission includes a Free Return Ticket. Adventure Theme Park rides are charged extra. Further information and tickets are available from the Park’s website www.wmsp.co.uk or by telephone 01299 402114. You can find out more on the Safari Park’s official Facebook page: www.facebook.com/WestMidSafari. You can follow the progress of the baby rhino on the Safari Park’s official Facebook page: www.wmsp.co.uk/facebook
The Park has also teamed up with Award-winning studio Aardman for their prehistoric comedy movie, Early Man. Fans of the film

arning! Mid-life crisis incoming. I may well be a hop, step and a jump away from splashing the cash on a flash ride, squeezing myself into skinny jeans and disappearing over the horizon. Or not. Probably not in fact. But I’m starting to get a little worried. The first signs of old age are edging in, no longer do I live with the unerring confidence of youth. Gone are the giddy days of immortality and making pacts with friends that we’ll die wearing Levi’s whilst listening to music that’s still relevant. What’s caused this you ask? Well, I’m facing up to the fact that my hairline is no longer what it was. I was more than happy to go grey, after all a little salt and pepper in the hair is fine by me, but it’s really starting to go on the top. My daughter is an honest critic who now refers to the “hole on the top of my head”. My barber recently quipped that he may not be seeing much of me in the future. “Less than you think sunshine” was my immediate response to the impudent pup. So what to do? Bite the bullet and take early action, or watch for the slow disappearance of hair like some glacial movement only to wake up one day and realise it’s all gone? Fortunately there are plenty of options (and role models). Yul Brynner, Bruce Willis, Patrick Stewart and Jason Statham have all pulled off the buzzcut/bare noggin with masterful success. Though they are all A-list film stars this is still an achievable option, even for a middle-aged dad from Woodthorpe. On the other hand, you don’t have to look far for what happens when you leave the situation unchecked. Rab C Nesbit springs to mind, as does being distracted by the island of hair clinging to Steve McClaren’s forehead whenever I see him interviewed. I’ll forgive Bobby Charlton because he’s a living legend and somehow got away with it.
So I have to face it, the days of walking in slow motion through a stiff breeze with a bouffant fringe dancing in the wind are behind me (I’m more worried my remaining hair may take flight). There are fewer options when I go to the barbers and I’ve learnt to silently hate the pictures of hair models sporting pompadours and other luxurious hairstyles. But on the other hand, it’s quite liberating. I’m not a fan of having too much choice so nature is taking all the distraction away from me. I’m going bald at the back and receding at the front so I can’t deny it any longer. And as the youngest in my family my sisters are delighted that their little brother is losing his hair. And, being sisters, they hardly ever point it out in public. Ever. So I think I’ve made my choice, keep the hair super short (within reason). I’m not sure I want to get rid of all of it but I’d rather keep it neat. I’ve seen too many aging rockers who are clinging to the concept of long hair whilst losing it all on top. That’s not a look anyone needs, it’s akin to a badly maintained mullet (which isn’t easy considering the utter contempt I have for mullets). In fact, most recently it appears that Prince William himself has been having the very same issue as me and has reached similar conclusions. Maybe I should follow his lead? All I need is a spare £150 for a haircut.
Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

Robbery, Riots and Residence: Bob Tells All! © Sam Burton The Robin Hood & Little John pub was close to overflowing on a cold January evening. It seemed like the whole of Redhill had turned up to hear local historian Bob Massey. A ringing bell sounded Massey’s dramatic entrance. Wearing a bright red traditional 1860s postal uniform he regaled us with tales from Redhill’s past. If you’re kicking yourself because you missed the open-talk, don’t worry we have you covered. Here are some of the most shocking and intriguing tales from the night...
Swift Nick & Dick Turpin
The First Highway(wo)man
Mansfield Road was the M1 of medieval times, perfect for ambushing. Many outlaws made our area their home. Turpin was one such highwayman (a horseback robber). But Turpin’s biggest claim to fame actually belonged to someone else. Turpin’s legendary 15 hour trek to York was just a story told by someone in a pub that was taken as fact. Actually, the feat belongs to Swift Nick Nevison who did it 50 years before. But that’s not to devalue Turpin’s legend; he was still a ferocious outlaw. Turpin moved to this area in 1735. Arnold had a high level of organised crime, it was like the mafia. But even the leader of this Arnold based mafia was terrified of Turpin. He once walked eight miles through a blizzard to pay Turpin!
One of the first highwaymen was actually a woman. Joan Phillips was a wealthy child of a farm owner. Edward Bracey courted her as a means to the end of robbing her father. However, Bracey fell for Joan and told her what his original intentions were. He expected her to throw him out, but instead Joan agreed that it was a great idea. They robbed her dad and ran away together into the sunset. They became highwaymen (she dressed as a man) and they lived happily ever after. Until 1685. When robbing another in a long line of wagons, Joan’s horse was shot from under her and Bracey died in battle. Joan was found to be a woman and hung.
Tales from Mansfield Road One day down Mansfield Road, there was a newly married couple travelling in a wagon that broke down. The driver said he’d go out and find help, leaving the couple in the wagon for ages. Night was beginning to fall and the husband went to look for the driver, leaving his new wife alone in the wagon. Shortly after a light came back down the road. It was the driver. Then, all of a sudden, a loud banging started to come from above the wife’s head, on top of the wagon. The driver shouted to the wife “get out of the wagon!” The wife replied “Where is my husband?” The driver continued to insist she get out of the wagon and to not look back. The wife slowly exited the wagon and ran to the driver, following his instructions and not looking back. She made it to the driver and when she did look back she saw an escaped patient from a close-by lunatic asylum on top of the wagon smashing her late husband’s head into it. Escaped insane patients were a sad but regular occurrence around this area.
Nottingham’s Very Own Rhino Pinchbeck, the inventor of artificial gold, was a travelling salesman. As a gimmick, he travelled with a female rhino, the only one in the country. While travelling down Mansfield Road the rhino stopped, stone-dead. There are records of this, but none of what happened after. On average they weigh about 1,600 kg, so how did they move her? Did they even attempt to? No one knows. If one day some rhino bones are found, we’ll know where they came from.
Has all this got you interested in Redhill’s history? Bob Massey has now published three books with historical tales from our area. All books are available at the NG magazine’s office and MSR News. Bob has more talks planned - check our website www.ngmagazines.org. uk/whatson for more information.

Why Did It Happen In Gedling? by Bob Massey
Ever since I was young I’ve always asked the question...Why? I never liked just accepting things. As a historian, I always want to know more! Why did this or that event happen? Why did it happen just there or why on that day? And why was there a particular outcome? Why are Arnold, Mapperley, Lambley, Burton Joyce and all the other places in the borough just where they are? Why are they not somewhere else? And why did some villages like Arnold grow and others not? The answers to these and similar questions are often more fascinating and revealing than the better known historical facts. We gain a greater understanding of how our ancestors lived and that helps us to understand more about the society we live in today. When we grow up in an area or have lived there a long time, we tend not to notice how things change over time and before long, the past is lost. I write these articles some two months before publication, so events sometimes happen between the writing and publication making these magazines themselves, historic documents.
responses I receive to the ng magazines articles and my books have shown a hunger for knowledge about our past. My recent history talks in the pub (the next one is Craftsmen, Colts and Conflict on Arnold and the Luddites, on 21st May in the Robin Hood and Little John at 7pm), the Halloween and other walks and the meetings of the local history and other groups have been really well attended. There is a great interest and fascination in the history of the area, which is great. The more we record local history and make this available in all formats, the more the interest grows. Gedling Borough Council have recently been awarded a heritage lottery grant to do just this. “Gedling Borough’s Heritage Brought Alive” is the name of the new project and over the next 18 months will see a heritage centre next to the cafe in Gedling Country Park, a book on the borough’s history, and recordings of oral history from those who remember past times. The installation of touch information screens and leaflets, history trails, videos and films, history walks, exhibitions and events of all sorts are being planned. The council now have the resources to carry out this much needed work but what is also needed are people. Historians like me can only do so much. We need you! Local people with local knowledge. Dennis Hill, a Heritage Consultant, has been appointed by the council as project officer and would love to hear from anyone who is interested in the history of the borough, to tell their story and help with the various projects. He and the project team would love to talk to you and any groups in which you are involved. This is a chance to expand access to our history, not just for those in the borough but to a much wider audience. Dennis can be contacted at denishill1066@gmail.com or via the Gedling Council offices.
Gedling is steeped in history, much of it not that well known. There are only a select few who either remember times gone by or have researched it for one reason or another. The
Without volunteers, this exciting project can’t happen and the chance may not occur again. Please get in touch and help to preserve our history for many future generations.
I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via ng magazines.

Dream Team
Run by Jon and Hilary Brown, Dream Doors Nottingham is a family run business that provides local residents with a hassle-free alternative to replacing their entire kitchen. With their door design service, Dream Doors can give you a stunning kitchen makeover for a fraction of the cost of a new re-fit. By replacing many aspects of your kitchen from the doors and drawer fronts, to work surfaces and sinks, Dream Doors can give you a kitchen facelift that will save you time, money and hassle. This could save you a staggering 40% in comparison to a full refit, and by adding new features, doors, drawers and clever storage solutions, they can transform your kitchen in a matter of hours. They offer everything from taps and tiles to sinks and splashbacks. Customers are offered a door replacement service or a complete kitchen. “There is no pressure to buy and we always supply free, no obligation quotes in advance. We’re extremely proud of our service and treat each customer with the utmost care and consideration” explains Hilary. It doesn’t matter how big or small your planned project is - the team are here to offer help and advice and are always available to offer guidance to you. Dream Doors are Checkatrade accredited and approved
by Trading Standards employing only experienced professionals. They have also won many awards including Home and Living Awards for Best Kitchen Supplier and Best Money Saving Product, so you know they set their standards high. “You only pay a deposit with the balance being paid when the whole project is completed to your satisfaction” adds Jon. Their kitchen doors are made-to-measure, meaning no dodgy fittings or misshapen doors. They will endeavour to find the perfect doors for you in both style and shape and with a massive range that shouldn’t be a problem; they have over 1000 kitchen door styles and colour combinations for you to choose from ranging from Ashford and Alabaster to Westbury and Vanilla. All replacement kitchen door designs are available with matching end panels, cornice, lighting pelmet and plinth. Your kitchen will look brand new! Pop along to the new showroom on Wollaton Road when you are ready to revitalise your kitchen and meet the dream team!

Is it an orangery... or a conservatory? “What’s the difference between a conservatory and an orangery?” is a question we’re often asked, yet still find devilishly difficult to answer.
perhaps just a touch more substantial and elegant, and a conservatory more generally affordable.
Back in the 17th Century, when orangeries first saw the light of day, it was more straightforward. Because conservatories hadn’t yet been invented. The orangery was a newfangled European idea for keeping wealthy homeowners’ citrus trees alive through the winter months... hence the name. I guess we’re quite fortunate that oranges and lemons were more popular than pomegranates at the time – it’s pretty hard to imagine the ‘pomegranatery’ catching on in quite the same, trip-off-thetongue way!
The difference is clear as mud! If you’d like to find out more, view our gallery pages at www. klg.co.uk, phone 0115 9221155 or visit our showrooms at The Mill, Queens Road East in Beeston NG9 2FD or Rutland House, Nottingham Road in Ilkeston DE7 5BB.
Orangeries were actually designed to be warm as much as bright, whereas the less expensive conservatories they later inspired were thought of rather more as palaces of light for delicate shrubs and bushes. But the differences are becoming fewer and fewer as time goes on. Orangeries traditionally had more structural brickwork than conservatories, which had fullglass roofs and, indeed, more glass all over. However the characteristic ‘lantern’ roof of the orangery has now expanded so much as to be virtually indistinguishable from many conservatory roofs. And at KLG Rutland we’ve taken this evolution a stage further with the ‘orangette’ – an orangery with a virtually fully glazed roof. If you really want to differentiate between the two, you could describe the orangery – with its brickwork base, pillars and parapet-style roof - as a more extravagant bridging of the gap between a full-blown single-storey home extension and the uPVC-framed, 80% glazed, dwarf-walled conservatory. Bear in mind, too, that an orangery will generally be considered a permanent extension and, as such, more likely to require planning permission, whereas most conservatories don’t. But, of course, they don’t all fit neatly into those categories! What we can say for certain is that either provides wonderful, additional, light and airy living space to your home. Both will certainly add value to your property, with an orangery

TAROSCOPES Air signs- Libra, Aquarius, Gemini
Earth signs- Capricorn, Virgo, Taurus
(Ten of Swords, Justice, Queen of Cups)
(Temperance, Five of Swords, Ace of Cups)
Feel the weight lifted as you walk away, for good.
Let go of the old to make room for the new, and find a new balance.
Something needs to end, because it has become pointless / hurtful / a burden. Recognise this, and walk away with your head high and everything left in as good a place as you can. Look after your own side of the street, and let karma take care of everything else. No grudges or backlash, just clean and much-needed closure. You’ll feel so much better afterwards.
Fire signs- Leo, Aries, Sagittarius
Things feel a little out of kilter; too much of one thing, not enough of another. Redress the balances in your life by consciously and deliberately cutting losses in some areas, and renewing commitments in others. A little ‘jiggle about’ is necessary to make you feel steady and on the even keel you need in life.
Water signs- Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio
(Three of Cups, Queen of Cups, Four of Wands)
(Five of Wands, Ace of Coins, Four of Coins)
It’s time for celebrations and rewards, for all of your graft!
Be more discerning about how you invest your time and energy.
A lovely month of partying, socialising and celebrating lies ahead- if you make the arrangements. What is the point of working so hard if you don’t sit back to recognise and reward your efforts? Take a ‘time out’ to do so, and refuel your ambitions for the next burst of activity. Romance looks likely, and lively!, this month.
You feel the urge to make a new start, possibly in work or an area of life you invest a lot of energy in. It’s overdue, but don’t let that rush you into a hasty move. Be discerning about your next choice and where you invest your valuable time. Take the lessons from what’s happened, identify what you don’t want more of, and maneuvere yourself accordingly.

THE DEADLIFT I would like to talk about the deadlift or as it is fondly known...the dreaded deadlift. Most people stay well away from this fundamental exercise, and why is that? The most common reason is “it gives me a bad back.”
Technical key points for the deadlift
Many years ago, that was my excuse, but now it’s my go to exercise for development. It isn’t about the lift, it isn’t the lift that’s causing your issues… it’s you!
• Bar should be set to correct height (height of a calibrated plate or roughly a third way up your shin)
Let me explain a little. The deadlift is probably the most important lift within any training programme.
• Conventional (not sumo) deadlift stance is just inside shoulder width
• It strengthens bone density
• As you look down, the bar should be inline with the balls of your feet
• It improves full body strength • It mobilises the full body in correct form • It can be used in high or low volume training to produce a specific outcome • It triggers hormone stimulation So why do people avoid this exercise? Simply put…. Your SI joint (sacroiliac joint) which is the first junction in the lower spine. This is the area most say ‘I slipped a disk doing deadlifts’. This is not the case. The twinge you may have felt would be from poor mobility and poor form, compressing on one side of your vertebrae, trapping a nerve. A visit to an osteopath and a click and a crack usually resolves this issue, but then you stay clear of deadlifting yet again. At Strength and Physique we say challenge yourself, don’t let fear of deadlifts hold you back. Here’s how to improve your lift: • Warm up well before stretching
• Your grip should be narrow but wide enough for clearance for your elbows to pass your knees WITH STRAIGHT ARMS • Your grip, NEUTRAL or ALTERNATE, will depend on grip strength, alternate is stronger • As you bend to grip the bar your hips should be just above knee height and you should feel hamstring engagement as you take the load through your heels • Before you pull, your spine should be straight (while holding all these other key points in place) and your shoulder blades drawn together and down lifting your chest • Head should be in a neutral position • And lastly before you pull, lock in your lats OR imagine bending the bar around your shins • Once all these are in place take a big breath, tighten your abs and hold until you complete 1 rep driving downward instead of pulling upwards, driving your hips towards the bar
• Stretch and mobilise your full body, YES especially your hip rotation and hamstrings
NOW execute the lift with great form.
• DO NOT go heavy in your first lift, this is to programme the body after stretching in how it should move throughout the lift
If you would like more information on deadlifting, head over to our Instagram page where you’ll find our Youtube channel for further information on key points for form with exercise.
• Progressively increase the weight, staying within your capability • Follow the technical pointers opposite before you even lift the bar

CHILDREN’S LUNCH BOXES When I was a kid, a packed lunch was meat paste or marmite sandwiches on white sliced, a packet of crisps and a KitKat. To be fair, it doesn’t seem to have done me any harm, but these days we all strive for something a bit more interesting, and a lot healthier, to tempt our kids to eat a nutritious packed lunch. Inspiring ideas can be a bit of a challenge and it is tempting to revert to shop-bought, ready-made options that are high in fat, salt and sugar, but with half of all kids now taking a packed lunch to school it is clear that they make up an important part of a child’s nutrition and so it is worth putting a bit of thought into what goes into their “pack up”. Keep your lunchbox choices fresh, varied, tasty, low in fat, salt and sugar but most of all interesting. If your child is picky, fussy or, let’s face it, just a little monkey when it comes to their packed lunch, try the following tips:-
• Involve them in planning and preparing what goes into their lunchbox. • If they are fussy eaters, stick to a few items and gradually add new ones over time. • If they don’t like wholemeal bread (as many don’t) try adding fibre from beans or brown rice. • Offer some cheese, or yoghurt for extra calcium and some frozen berries or grapes (they will defrost before lunch but help to keep everything cold). • Stick with water to drink rather than sugary drinks and always provide some fresh veg in the form of carrot sticks or similar. You might also offer a hard-boiled egg, perhaps with a smiley face or a funny message such as “eat me” on it. • Add a healthy homemade banana and blueberry muffin, or a small piece of dark chocolate for a sweet treat to finish of the meal. Here are a few more suggestions for making your kid’s lunchbox a bit more interesting (all ingredients are approximate depending on how hungry your little ones get!)
Abby Brennan is a former cafe owner, she now cooks, writes, speaks and blogs about food and food policy. You can find her @greatfoodclub magazine & at fishwifeskitchen.com
Cut-Out Sandwiches Serve your usual sandwiches but with a twist. Ingredients White Sliced Bread Brown Sliced Bread Sandwich fillings of choice Use a healthy, nutritious sandwich filling, such as cucumber and tuna, cream cheese and celery (thinly sliced) or cheese and tomato. Remove a shape from the centre of each slice using a cookie cutter and replace in the alternative white or brown slice. Simple and fun!
Cheesy Quesadilla with Tuna Mayo Pitta a Rainbow Salad Ingredients 1 Tortilla Wrap Cheddar cheese (grated) Spring onions (finely sliced) Mixed bean salad (tin, drained) Yellow pepper (chopped) Cherry tomatoes (halved) Carrot (finely sliced) Cut the tortilla wrap in half. Top one half with the grated cheese and the spring onion slices. Place the other half on top. Heat for about 1 minute each side in a non-stick frying pan until lightly browned. Remove from heat, allow to cool and cut into half or quarters (depending on the size of your wraps). Wrap in foil and place in lunch-box. For the salad, drain the bean salad, mix with the chopped pepper, tomatoes and carrot, place in a separate sealed container. (You can season with a little olive oil, salt and pepper if desired).
Ingredients Tuna chunks in spring water (drained) 2 tbsp sweetcorn (drained) Light mayonnaise to mix 1 wholemeal pitta Shredded lettuce (I used hot-house, but iceberg gives some added crunch) Mix the drained tuna with the sweetcorn and mayonnaise (add a little salt and pepper if you wish). Halve the pitta, lightly toast and allow to cool. Divide the tuna mix between them, add the shredded lettuce. Wrap in foil and add to lunchbox. Serve a portion of mixed fruit in a separate container on the side.

All the money collected goes into the local area, defined as Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire & Derbyshire. This charity helps support children 0-18 who are disabled, disadvantaged or suffering from abuse or neglect. Our donation will make such a huge difference. The money was raised through ticket sales from our Christmas 2017 concert. We would like to thank all who attended for your support, it really has helped a great cause. Every performance is unique and we all look forward to seeing you and your family and friends at our forthcoming concert, St Mark Church, Woodthorpe on 12th May. Bingham and District Choral Society The great Verdi Requiem was once described as ‘an opera in ecclesiastical costume’ and this comment does capture something of the dramatic and theatrical nature of the work. It is also a joy to sing, as the Bingham and District Choral Society and the Mansfield Choral Society are discovering in their weekly rehearsals. The two choirs will join together to perform the Requiem at 7.30pm on Saturday 12th May 2018 in Southwell Minster, accompanied by the Nottingham Symphony Orchestra (complete with the unique Verdi drum and offstage trumpets!) and conducted by Guy Turner, Musical Director of BDCS. Early booking is recommended for this splendid concert. Tickets cost £15, £13, £9 or £5 for the under-16s and are available from Tim (0115 8780642), Bingham Library (01949 837905), Pen2Paper, 6 Main Street, Radcliffe-on-Trent (0115 9335810). Full details of the concert are also available at www. binghamchoral.org.uk.

University Life Survival Guide by Sam Burton
University is said to be one of the sure-fire ways of getting a job. On top of that, university is supposed to be the best time of your life. With so much pressure put on one period of time, here are some tips, personal experiences, and industry facts to help you do this whole uni-thing right.
Student Finance The first hurdle you will encounter is Student Finance, the government appointed student-support system that pays for your university education and depending on your household income (what your parents earn) will give you a maintenance loan to help pay for your rent and survive the days on something more than £1 noodles (not fun, trust me). The highest maintenance tier is for people with a household income of £25,000 or less a year. This could get you up to £8,200 for your maintenance loan. If you decide to live at home you will get around £1000 less. But this money isn’t free (sadly). You’ll pay 9% of earnings above a threshhold of £21,000 (fixed til 2021) back to the government monthly until your debt is repaid. Eg; if you earn £25,000 you will pay 9% of £4,000: £30 a month. This will be taken out like a tax. Applying for Student Finance can seem very confusing with a lot of forms to fill out, but don’t worry; the sign-up process is a guided one on their website and makes everything surprisingly simple. Just make sure you have a working printer for the posted forms and that your parents have their income details to hand.
Housing Once you have the money, you’ll be wanting to find a place to live. An important decision as this will be the place you work, eat, sleep, and finally get to relax in after a long day of absorbing lecture after lecture for a year. The three main types of accommodation are flats, houses, and studio apartments. The average rent of a flat is £155.90 per week*. For a house it is £141.60 per week*. And for studios it is £222.70 per week*. I spent my first year in a student-flat with six other people. The first couple of months were super fun. It was daunting meeting so many new people at once, but everyone is in the same boat so the atmosphere is always welcoming. Not being much of a partyanimal though, the later months where the rest of the building were having a raging party were not as much fun. If that is your scene then you’ll feel right at home, but if you’re a bit more introverted like me, this may be an important factor to consider. For my second year I lived in a studio apartment where my living room, kitchen, and bedroom were all the same room. The independence and freedom a studio apartment gives is amazing. Being able to have my friends over whenever in this spacious zone that turned into our own personal gaming room and make-shift cinema made some of my favourite university memories.
Friends and Courses
Speaking of friends, they are the life-blood of any university experience. Being able to purely study what you want puts you into contact with like-minded people who all have the same overwhelming passion and being in that atmosphere is an electric feeling. Plus being able to just study what you want is a revelation in itself. That combined with the strong bonds forged through trying to hit an assignment’s deadline is an almost guaranteed winning combination.
No matter what, university is definitely an unforgettable time. So good luck and remember, even when you have five deadlines on the same week and the guy in the room next to you won’t stop blaring out the worst music imaginable, take moments for yourself and above all, have fun. *Averages worked out by taking the rent for the top 10 properties on an estate agent’s site in Sheffield on the time of writing and finding the mean.

The whole exercise was created by teachers to inspire creative thinking and writing, and one pupil showed just how much it had triggered their imaginations! Enyaj Taylor age 9 said her classmates also found strange footprints next to the egg. “The egg was purple with silver cracks in it and I think it could have been left by a dinosaur, -or it could be a chocolate egg. I would really like it to be a unicorn’s egg! We are going to look for more clues later and write about our investigation.”

Tanya About Town T
hankfully the sparkles weren’t packed away with the Christmas decorations as Strictly Fever swept Nottingham during the first part of the year. Stars of the show past and present visited the Motorpoint Arena, whilst Anton and Erin dropped in on the Theatre Royal and Vincent and Flavia bought their Tango Moderno spectacular to the Royal Concert Hall. The 90-minute spectacular managed to pack in not only what shape tango is in today but what the UK’s dancing scene looks like, along with a lesson in relationships just in time for Valentines Day. Don’t put your dancing shoes away just yet as we have Remembering Fred at the Theatre Royal (29 April), Flashdance (7 May) and Kevin and Karen (30 May) still to come. If you’re a fan of the musicals then Cilla comes to town (3 -7 April) and Legally Blonde, based on the much-loved movie, follows (14 -19 May) and Sunset Boulevard (21 - 26 May) Fancy some nostalgia? Make sure you catch chart-topping duo Tears for Fears at the Arena (28 April) or if you prefer to see the stars of the future, then make sure you get yourself along to the Dot to Dot Festival taking place on 27 May. The Festival has continued to showcase the best new acts from around the world since starting in Nottingham more than a decade ago. Comedy is on the cards for the Spring as the Playhouse welcomes Joe Lycett (25 April) whilst Jon Richardson is down the road at the Royal Concert Hall (23 May) Speaking of Spring, make sure you get along to Hodstock Priory in Worksop. Walk the woodland paths and see the impressive display of Bluebells (28 April - 7 May) and
enjoy the great outdoors at Wellow on Bank Holiday Monday (28 May) with their Maypole celebrations. This unique event has its roots in the 19th century but has evolved over time to become one of Nottinghamshire’s largest one-day village festivals. Whilst we’re on the subject of history, Did you know that Nottingham has over 800 caves? Cave City: Nottingham Underground Festival takes place 11 -13 May. A celebration of our underground treasures, explore what lies beneath your very feet in a series of fun and intriguing events across the city, revealing Nottingham’s hidden landscape. Events will include talks and tours at some of the city’s lesser-known caves including The National Justice Museum, the Malt Cross and the lost caves at the Curious Tavern. Need some relaxation after all that activity? You can now join your tweenager at their own special spa evening at Ye Olde Bell in Retford. Exclusively for 11 - 16-year-olds you can both enjoy the facilities with fondue and fun guaranteed (4 April). Communication Skills -
it’s not all about your CV by Helen Jones Time and time again we see candidates fall at the first hurdle when job searching – and not because of their previous experience or practical skills. It’s because at interview, when faced with face to face contact they simply cannot communicate efficiently and build rapport which is essential within most working environments. Good business still relies on building and maintaining effective relationships despite our growing reliance on computers and digital technology. The value of good personal communication can’t be underestimated. In a recent survey the following are the skills that most hiring/line managers would like to see in their employees: • Listening – pay close attention to what the other person is saying. This allows you to respond appropriately. Don’t pre-empt what you think is being said. Actively listen. • Body language – be aware that your hand gestures, eye contact etc. sends a strong message to the other person. If you are defensive and refuse direct eye contact you could be misconstrued as shifty or untrustworthy. Have a relaxed, genuine stance. • Empathy – Nobody can agree on everything 100% of the time but even if you disagree with an employer or work colleague it’s important for you to try and understand and respect their point of view. • Confidence – not the arrogant “It’s my way or no way” type of confidence but a confidence that demonstrates belief in your ability to do the job and follow through where required. A firm and friendly tone when dealing with others. • Being personal – use the other person’s name, maintain eye contact, be interested in what they have to say. All this will leave a positive impression long after the conversation/meeting is over. And finally…Thank You. The power of these two words is considerable. Thank people for their time, their efforts, their suggestions and their support. I defy any worker not to feel good when someone utters those two words to them. Be it senior management or a colleague. Good manners cost nothing as my grandmother used to say.

Lungworm in Dogs Over the last few years a new parasitic disease, Canine Lungworm, has occurred the UK. Initially dogs effected have been mainly in the South of England but as we have become more vigilant, cases have been diagnosed all over the British Isles. Recently a dog from Calverton was infected and sadly died of the disease. This dog had been on holiday recently but was not on lungworm prevention medication. There have been 108 confirmed cases in the East Midlands. The lungworm angiostrongylus vasorum is now endemic throughout much of the UK. Commonly lungworm is seen in younger dogs due to their inquisitive nature but can be seen in dogs of all ages. It does not effect cats or other species. Slugs and snails carry the lungworm larvae, and dogs can become infected when they eat these common garden pests accidentally or deliberately, whilst rummaging through undergrowth, eating grass, drinking from puddles or outdoor water bowls, or pick them up from their toys. Foxes and frogs have also been implicated in it’s spread. The symptoms shown by dogs can be quite vague but include:
- Breathing problems - Change in behaviour - Blood clotting problems - General sickness If you are worried make sure you get the vet to examine your pet, often diagnosis is confirmed on blood and feacal tests and with x-rays. Thankfully most dogs, if diagnosed early, will make a good recovery, however prevention is the best way to keep your dog healthy. Traditional 3-6 monthly worming regimes with older wormers do not afford a good protection for canine lungworm. Most vets now recommend a monthly treatment with an approved lungworm product given all the year round. Speak to your vet about the best way to prevent this horrible disease. Many practices, like Oak House Vets, run Pet Health Schemes to help you organise your parasite and vaccine control and to spread out the costs to make it easier to pay for the best treatments. For more information on lungworm check the website www.lungworm.co.uk

Miners Unveil Memorial Benches at Gedling Country Park
Handcrafted, illustrated benches, made in tribute to miners, were revealed at a special ceremony at Gedling Country Park. Gedling Colliery miners, dressed in full mining gear, as well as school children who helped to design the benches unveiled the benches at the event. The two specially designed benches – one which depicts an underground mining scene and the other an over ground image – were designed by local artist Richard Janes, who worked with GCSE art students from Christ the King Secondary Academy, in Arnold. Richard Janes, the artist who built the benches said, “The benches tell the story of the Colliery at Gedling. The overground story with the headstocks and landscape of the pit, the underground story with the miners, tunnels, lamps and pit ponies. The students at Christ the King were shown the ideas and inspirations that went into the Gedling flame tree and devised their own amazing designs. These then fed into the design of the decorative panels for the benches.” Gedling Colliery was the life-blood of the village and its surrounding areas for nearly a century, until it closed in 1991. The site stood derelict for over 20 years before being transformed into a country park in March 2015.

Mapperley and Arnold Rotary Club News
2017 was a very successful year for the Rotary. Working alongside the charity, Forever Stars, they raised more than £14,000 towards the opening of the Serenity Suite at the City Hospital’s Maternity Unit. The Serenity Suite caters for mothers and families who lose a baby during pregnancy or child birth. A Christmas carol evening helped raise over £1200 to support the clubs continued work sending local teenagers on outward bound courses. This is an ongoing initiative that has been going for ten years in conjunction with their twin club in Holland. The Christmas float was extremely successful again raising around £7000. This money will go towards supporting local charities. Current President, Richard Shacklock, is supporting the palliative cancer-care unit, Hayward House, this year and along with his wife has already made a major difference in the HH grounds. Hopefully it will be in full bloom come the spring and become more established over the coming years! Mapperley and Arnold Rotary Club would like to thank all of you in the local community for your continued support. If you wish to know more about the workings of Rotary, the club meet at Mapperley Golf Club most Wednesday evenings or just give us a ring on 0115 966 3385 or visit our website www.rotarymapperleyarnold.org.uk or www.facebook. com/mapperleyandarnoldrc/

Together We Can All Make A Difference Together We Can Make Gedling – Dementia Friendly
There are currently around 1,300 people living with dementia across the constituency of Gedling. Dementia can affect a person’s connection to the world and the community they love. It can leave those suffering feeling isolated and alone. I recently met with John Kemp from the Alzheimer’s Society to discuss how I can support the society’s work both locally, here in Gedling, and nationally. Families and carers of those suffering from dementia need support too and it is so important that their views and experiences are listened to. I hope by all working together we can make a real difference to the quality of life for those with dementia and for their families and carers. There is a lot of great work already taking place across Gedling, including the Singing for the Brain and Memory Café sessions. Singing for the Brain is a place where those with dementia can meet new people in a friendly, fun and social environment, using music therapy to help. Please use the details below to book a place. The Memory Café where can have a cup of tea with someone who understands, you can go to the café if you have dementia or if you are a family member or a friend of someone that has dementia. The Alzheimer’s Society have highly skilled staff at the café that can give you information and help or sign post you to other available support services. The Memory Café provides a safe and supportive place for you to discuss your own dementia diagnosis, or someone else’s, and think about what it means for the future, get answers from health professionals and meet and learn from other
people in similar situations, keep active, make new friends and feel more confident. Dementia Support Service The specialist Dementia Support Workers provide support, information and guidance for people with dementia their carers and family members. This includes assisting people to access other support services within the community. They offer a one-toone support service by telephone, face to face visits and written information on request. Please see the contact details below to talk to a Dementia Support Worker. You Could Become a Dementia Friend People with dementia are often misunderstood, marginalised and isolated but with the right support and understanding they can continue to live fulfilling lives. If you want to help or learn more about dementia then there is the Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme. This initiative hopes to change people’s perceptions of dementia. Whether you attend a face-to-face Information Session or watch the online video, Dementia Friends is about learning more about dementia and the small ways you can help. I believe that together we can all make a difference and together we can make Gedling – Dementia Friendly. Become a ‘Side by Side’ volunteer The Side by Side service is a free service which helps people with dementia stay active and involved in their local community. Volunteers provide support to enable people with dementia to keep doing the things they enjoy or try new activities. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please contact Sue Button on 0115 343 800 for further details. For more information about the support available locally or to book a place on the sessions above please phone 0115 934 3800 (Office opening times: MondayFriday, 09:00-17:00) or by email nottingham@alzheimers.org.uk

Robert Mellors Old Boys Local councillor and school governor, John Parr, is fascinated with keeping local history alive. In particular, as a former student of Robert Mellors Secondary Modern School, John has collected some interviews and archive material from a group of old boys from 1934 - 1974. The interviews are now available on CD. For more information email John: jm.parr@ntlworld.com Here’s a taster from John’s archive...
This appeared in The Heron (the school magazine) in 1950: In wishing the scholars of Nottingham good fortune may I say this? Every school should keep a record of events in it’s own magazine, and every boy should keep his copies. They may not appear to be particularly interesting at the time of publication, but as the years roll on, and destiny reveals the fate reserved for every boy and master, he will look back with more affection at the old names and scenes. In a word, a school magazine, however poor in quality and size, may be a permanent record of the most important years of a fellows life. Old boys should keep in touch with the School through its Old Boys' Association, of which the school magazine should be the official organ.
Written by Captain W. E. Johns, famous author of the ‘Biggles’ books.
Harvey Roddis was born in 1924 in Arnold and attended Calverton Road Infant School in 1929. The young master Roddis was banned from school for four years due to fears he had ringworm. Nottingham Children’s Hospital diagnosed alopecia and Harvey was allowed to attend the British School in 1933 for a short time. In 1934 he was transferred to Robert Mellors. After starting off at the bottom of the class, in 1938 (his final year) he finished top of the class and was awarded the school’s progress prize. Harvey started working in the coal mining industry at 14 years old as an underground worker and ended up in a senior management position with the National Coal Board.
Tony Storey spent much of the last 18 months of his school days working on the school printing unit producing things like pages of poetry. This set him on the path towards a career in the print industry. After a six year apprenticeship as a compositor and jobs with several local companies, in 1966 Tony became an estimator and moved over to sales within the industry. In 1978 he made the decision to work for himself along with two business partners. The business was a great success and after 10 years, aged 51 he decided to retire. The business employed 130 people and had a multi-million pound turnover. Not bad for a secondary modern schoolboy from Robert Mellors.

a helping hand Gedling BC Committed to Providing Quality Facilities for Disabled
The council’s four leisure centres, Richard Herrod Centre, Bonington Theatre and Gedling Country Park have all been awarded the CredAble provider quality Kite mark. The award comes from CredAbility, an independent service committed to quality for disabled customers. The awarded venues will each display the Kite Mark to raise awareness of the facilities on offer to disabled visitors. The accreditation has been awarded based on the council’s commitment to respond to feedback about its facilities and its provisions for the disabled. Gedling Borough Council
joins a group of venues who have been awarded the accreditation including The Royal Albert Hall and Motorpoint Arena. Gedling Borough Council started working with Nimbus Disability, who awarded the accreditation, in July 2017 and have since had all sites assessed. Changes were made to make all sites accessible for disabled visitors and making sure there were the appropriate facilities where needed. Gedling Country Park became a fully accessible and disabled friendly park thanks to the installation of a special Changing Places toilet and changing facility for people with severe disabilities, the first of its kind in the borough. from your Neighbourhood Beat Team.... What is fraud? Fraud is when trickery is used to gain a dishonest advantage, which is often financial, over another person. It can refer to a business or individual. It is also increasingly linked to cyber crime.
Protect yourself against online fraud… Ensure your operating systems and software programs are kept up to date, antivirus software is installed and you have downloaded a tool to detect and remove malware.
Anyone can be a victim. Help prevent this by taking the following precautions:
Check the authenticity of a website before making any purchase by carrying out research into the company name, business address and reviews.
WOODTHORPE & KINGSWELL PC 2734 Jennings PCSO 9623 Ingram Email: gedling.northnpa@ nottinghamshire.pnn.police.uk
Protect yourself against coldcallers and bogus door-to-door sales Never hand out any bank or personal details to a third party, by phone or email. Genuine companies will not conduct business in this manner. If in doubt, hang up and ring the company on their main phone number.
DAYBROOK & BONINGTON PC 3369 Dosanjh PCSO 9856 Scatcherd Email: gedling.northnpa@ nottinghamshire.pnn.police.uk
Turn away anyone offering financial proposals or anything that requires immediate signature or payment. The services bought will likely never materialise and scammers can utilise your signature.
Call 101 for non-emergency or 999 in an emergency
Shred receipts with your card details on, along with post with your name and address on. Identity fraudsters don’t need much information in order to be able to clone your identity.
Find us on Facebook: Gedling Police:Arnold, Calverton, Ravenshead and the Villages
Check credentials, including a permanent business address and a landline telephone number. The mobile phone numbers on a fraudster’s business card are often pay-as-you-go numbers which are virtually impossible to trace.
Stay up to date with the latest scams by checking the Action Fraud news feed. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. I think I have been a victim of fraud. What should I do? If you think you’ve been scammed, ripped off or conned, you should report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. Action Fraud is run by the National Fraud Authority and is a one-stop reporting centre which handles all reports of fraud in the UK. If you believe an individual is targeting vulnerable people in your community to con them, you should report it to us on 101. Also tell us if you know the offender or you know of suspicious fraudulent activity. A Tale of Two Gussets! It could have been due to a hormonal imbalance (women of a certain age will know what I mean). Or maybe the need to feel, well, needed. With two teenage boys who rarely make an appearance downstairs these days, the living room had started to feel a bit empty. Whatever the reason, after managing to get through over fifty years pooch free, I have now acquired two within the space of a couple of years. They say second born children tend to be a bit of a nightmare - and I can vouch for that! However I wasn’t warned that second adopted dogs would be the same. Too late now. Herbie has arrived and is here to stay! It appears this cute rescue puppy is half dog and half mountain goat. Managing to scale work surfaces that no normal dog should be able to reach. And eating. Absolutely. Everything. In Sight. Coming home from work feeling pretty pleased with myself for having the dinner already cooked I was met with the devastating news that Herbie had eaten the whole lot. Chippy supper it was then. My underwear drawer is not somewhere anyone needs to go, believe me. However Herbie decided that he quite liked the look of it. I am now the proud owner of some interesting garments. Two piece bra’s, footless socks and crotchless pants (not that sort!). M & S here I come! Gussets seem to be a particular favourite of this chewing machine. Cycling shorts offer a gourmet delight, softer and chewier than your basic pants, and at £175 a pair, more expensive than caviar. Thank goodness for Google. I found a company in Italy called Dr Pad (yes, really) that was able to
replace said gusset for a fraction of the price of new shorts. The new, even better shorts arrived safely back and lasted about 3 hours before, in a momentary lapse of vigilance, Herbie struck again! New gusset swiftly destroyed. Another email to Dr Pad, much hilarity from Italy and requests for photo’s of the now infamous puppy and the shorts are winging their way back to be repaired once more. Such is the popularity of young Herbie, that the lovely Serena at Dr Pad has offered to send “as a gift” a pile of defective pads for him to chew. I don’t know much about puppy training or dog psychology but I am guessing this would be a really bad move, encouraging a gusset fixation that could only end badly. So I politely declined the offer. Why not buy him chewing toys? I hear you shout. So far we have spent the price of a family hatchback on these toys. They last about an hour and then disappear - coming out the other end a day or so later, if you get my meaning. We have finally found a company called Mighty Mutts (thanks Dionne at Cuddles A Plenty) who guarantee their toys for three years! So far, so good. Toy still intact after 3 weeks. I will keep you posted... Meanwhile everything is locked up, shut away and raised 10 feet off the ground. I have to dash now as he has his whole front half immersed in the kitchen bin. Arghhhhhh. © Ali Wale
