LOVELY LAMB!
Lamb is a tasty and versatile meat. Here are three recipes using different cuts, all easy, delicious and inexpensive. Enjoy!
MOUSSAKA
500g minced lamb 2 tbsp olive oil (plus oil for brushing) 2 aubergines (500g) - sliced 1 onion - sliced 2 garlic - finely chopped 400g tin chopped tomatoes 1 tsp cinnamon red wine - splash 50g butter, 30g flour & 350ml milk 1 egg - beaten 100g grated cheese (cheddar or parmesan) nutmeg - grated salt & pepper method Pre-heat oven to 200°C. Brush augergine slices both sides with olive oil and place on a large baking sheet. Bake for 10 mins then turn and bake for another 10 mins. They should be soft and golden brown. Meanwhile - gently fry the onion and garlic til soft. Turn heat up and add the lamb. Break up and brown. Then add the cinnamon and red wine - boil til liquid is absorbed. Add tinned tomatoes and season to taste. Simmer gently for 20 mins while you make the white sauce. In a small pan melt butter - add flour and stir for a minute. Remove from heat and gradually stir in milk. Over a medium heat stir until the sauce is smooth and thick. Add 2/3 of the cheese and 1 tsp grated nutmeg. Leave to cool slightly while you assemble to dish. Grease an ovenproof dish and place a layer of aubergine slices on the bottom. Pour over the lamb sauce and top with another layer of aubergines. Then beat the egg into the white sauce. Pour over the top of the dish and sprinkle with the remaining cheese. Bake for 45 mins in oven.
Lamb and Spinach Curry
This recipe is based on a dish from a book called “Curry”. 3 tbsp sunflower oil 300g boneless lamb leg steaks - cubed 350g bag spinach 2 x onions - chopped 1 x garlic clove - crushed 400g tin tomatoes 1 tsp chilli flakes 1 tsp turmeric 1 tsp cumin seeds salt to taste method Heat the oil in a pan and cook the onions until soft. Add garlic, tomatoes, chilli, cumin seeds, turmeric and lamb. Cover and cook gently for 40 mins. Meanwhile wash spinach and place in a pan until wilted. Drain and once cooled, chop. After 40 mins add spinach to the pan. Remove lid and simmer for a further few minutes until you have a thick sauce. Check for seasoning and serve with rice.
Moroccan Meatballs 500g minced lamb 1 x onion - finely chopped 2 x garlic cloves - finely chopped 2 tsp ground cumin 2 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp cinnamon breadcrumbs - good handful 1 egg 1 dsp tomato puree salt & pepper method Either use a food processor or manually mix the ingredients until well blended. Roll into walnut size balls and shallow fry until browned all over. Delicious with couscous and tomato sauce or stuffed in pitta bread with coleslaw.

Looking for a school for your daughter? Thinking about school for the first time?
Or as she gets older?
You want the best for your daughter but which school is right for her? Maybe it is time for you to look at a school which helps girls develop their individual strengths and abilities, whilst ensuring they are safe, secure and happy.
Have you concerns about class sizes? Is your daughter getting overlooked? Do teachers really know what makes her tick? Are you pleased with the progress she is making?
Hollygirt School takes girls of all abilities. They all make excellent progress and we are proud of their achievements at whatever level. It is the unique environment of a girls’ school with small classes, where everyone knows each other and teachers have the time to get the best out of each child, that really works. All girls are stretched and achieve more than they thought possible.
It is never too late to make a difference to your daughter’s education. Wouldn’t it be lovely to find a place where she is happy and achieving the best that she possibly can? In today’s straitened economic times, there is great value to be had from having a daughter in Hollygirt even for a couple of years, and rapid progress can be made to ensure a girl reaches her potential.
Indeed, girls can join Hollygirt at any age from 3 up to the start of Year 10, subject to a place being available. There is a school that perfectly suits your child...…maybe Hollygirt could be the one. Our next Open Events are on Thursday 3rd May, please see below for timings. If you can’t make it, just call us to arrange a convenient time for you to come in for a chat and a look around. We look forward to seeing you.

Young people join together to transform their communities Hundreds of young people will hit the streets of Nottinghamshire this summer in a pioneering flagship scheme. National Citizen Service (NCS) is now recruiting hundreds of 15 and 16-year-olds in Nottinghamshire. Participants will have the opportunity to take part in a broad range of skill building activities including team bonding events and creating their own social action projects to help their local communities in July and August. NCS is a flagship government initiative which aims to promote a more cohesive, responsible and engaged society by bringing together young people from different backgrounds to make a difference in their communities. It is a voluntary summer programme that focuses on their personal and social development including challenging
activities, such as residential experiences and a self-designed social action project. Last year more than 8,000 young people were involved in the programme across England and this year there will be up to 30,000 places available nationwide. The scheme starts in earnest in July, when participants will take part in camping, canoeing, climbing, abseiling and archery, on a series of residential courses in the Peak District. Teams will also talk to their communities to find out about local issues and then shape and complete a project around the ones they are passionate about by the end of August. For a place on the programme or to find out more about it, get in touch with the team now at ralph.tonge@ncn.ac.uk.

Cadet Burrows Brings Home Gold I am Jack Burrows and I am a member of 2418 (Sherwood) Squadron, I also short track speed skate for Nottingham Ice Racing Club and compete for Team GB. I got in to speed skating after watching Dancing on Ice and asked if I could have a go at ice skating with my brothers. I was taken to the Ice Arena in Nottingham by my parents where we all had a go. I enjoyed it so much that I bugged my mum for lessons on the UK skate programme. After a couple of months of lessons I was spotted by one of the short track coaches Mandy Worth who is also the club coach for Nottingham Ice Racing Club and an ex Olympic medallist. Mandy asked if I wanted to have a go at speed skating, which I did. At first I didn’t like it due to the boots hurting my feet but after having another go I started to enjoy the thrill of going fast and I joined the club and started to compete in local competitions.
Britain in Bormio, Italy. During this season I broke all three British Records that had stood for 8 ½ years. I won a few competitions being Junior British Open and Championships Gold Medallist and a Bronze Medallist in the European Junior Championships Finals. In my current season of 2011/12 I managed to qualify as one of the two spots to go to the Youth Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria in January 2012. At the youth Olympics I got personal best times in the 1000m and in the 500m. I broke the British record for Juvenile men that had stood for 11 years with a new time of 45.491 seconds. The last event was a mixed relay containing two boys and two girls. I was paired with a Chinese boy and girl, and a Korean girl. We qualified for the relay final as the second fastest team and in the final we won the gold. A first ever Youth Winter Olympic Gold Medal and the only one that team GB got.
As my skating improved and my times got quicker I qualified for the European Starclass competitions. In the season 2010/11 I was selected to be part of the Great Britain development squad where I represented Great
This was the best feeling in the world! The support and motivation the Staff and Cadets from 2418 (Sherwood) Squadron have given me has really helped me to achieve my goal but most of all a GOLD Medal.

Hannah Rotton
Well done to the 24 swimmers who represented the Club in the Notts ASA Age Group Championships where there were countless personal best times and overall top 10 age group finishes for Luke Archer, Kiran Watkins, Maisie Chung, Grace Perry, Kirsten Gilding and Hannah Drewett. Commenting on the performances in the Counties, Dave Palmer Head Coach of the Performance squad said “The success of the clubs swimmers who competed at the Counties are the rewards for their commitment and attitude in the training environment. Their achievements both mentally in preparing for the events and physically in swimming the events should not be underestimated.”

A magical secret garden with music for Maggie's
Have you ever wondered what lies behind the townhouse on Angel Row? Well, in May you will be able to look around the secret garden at the back of Bromley House Library. We are having an ‘open garden’ event to raise funds for Maggie’s the cancer care charity as well as the conservation work we do at the library. Our walled garden (pictured above), a place of tranquillity in the city, is one of the remaining gardens in the town centre and will be looking its best in May. Maggie’s offers cancer patients and their families support to complement their medical care. Bromley House staff will be on hand to answer questions, and June Perry will be playing the Hammer Dulcimer. Cake and cordials will be available. Please contact Geraldine Gray on 0115 947 3134, enquiries@bromleyhouse.org or www. bromleyhouse.org.uk Admission £2.00 p.p £4.00 for families (2 Adults + children) Opening Time; Sat May 12th , 2pm – 5pm photograph courtesy of Martine Hamilton Knight/Builtvision

Arnold Local Area Forum is a partnership of local authorities, community groups, agencies and organisations operating in the Arnold area. Hello. Wow, 10 years since the ALAF started – we are indeed living at a unique time when history is being created!! No, it’s not all to do with the ALAF celebrations. 2012 is unique when most of us will witness history in the making with the Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The ALAF held a small 10th Anniversary celebration party at the end of 2011, that was attended and enjoyed by members past and present, and this edition of the newsletter brings you stories and news of what your ALAF and its members have achieved and aspirations for the future.

In This Issue
Introduction Queens Diamond Jubilee Arnold Arts Society Arnold Golden Eagles Vernon Coaker MP Gedling CVS Golden Amblers The ALAF is growing in numbers and it is delighted to be supported by the local authorities and local community groups. The Arnold in Bloom ALAF is not an exclusive organisation, and we would very much Olympics 2012 welcome your views on local issues and ideas for community Arnold U3A projects that could be undertaken by us collectively. AKRA If you would like to organise any small scale (or large) events in Gedling Play Forum the Arnold area to celebrate the Olympics or the Diamond jubilee Friends of the Hobbucks then why not share them with the ALAF – we may even be able Arnold Local History Grp to put you in contact with other local groups that can support you in the delivery of the events! See end of newsletter for contact Science on Stage details. Notts Postcard Club Best Wishes and enjoy any celebration that you may participate in. Arnold Library Contact Us Bob Tait, Chairman
Queen’s Diamond Jubilee In relation to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebration the last one was that of Queen Victoria in 1897. It is highly unlikely that another Diamond Jubilee will happen in our lifetime. Again a once a lifetime historical event, the local councils are planning a range of play days and picnics in the park. However, it is suggested that the best way to celebrate this momentous occasion is to organise your own street party – a fantastic opportunity to get to know your neighbours and make new friends.
On the 4th June 2012 at 10pm, there will be 2012 beacons lit across the country – beacons are identical to large bonfires, and there will be 6 across Gedling. The sites are yet to be determined, so look out for details in the local media or council websites. Again do get involved – all beacons are expected to be community led and rely on your goodwill to be delivered. At 10pm when all the beacons are lit a space satellite photograph will be taken for the Queen as a mark of respect and to show Her Majesty how the citizens are celebrating her achievement.

The Arnold Arts Society The Society hold regular exhibitions at Pond Hills but have also exhibited at: Bonington Theatre; Gedling Civic Centre; Moorgreen; QMC; Nottingham Art Society; local garden centres; Red Cross, and in Vandoeuvre, France. In 2004 its members donated paintings for the newly built leukaemia ward at the City Hospital. The range of activities grows and the Society offer a friendly atmosphere to all interested in art. The recently refurbished display stands compliment the paintings put on show. At the spring exhibition, they had a section for alternative art, revealing new varied artistic talents. Their member-led sessions offer opportunities to try different techniques, materials and styles.
Art Society Award Winner pictured with the President
Plans for the next ten years? The Society would sincerely like to remain at Pond Hills; it is a centre that has high ceilings and offers wonderful light conditions for painting. It also hopes to improve the high standard of audio and visual aids that assist speakers, and wish to continue providing exhibition opportunities, indoor and outdoor sketching, workshops, life class, demonstrations, visits to London and social events. This Society plays a large part in the lives of its members and long may it do so.

Arnold Golden Eagles The organisation known as the ‘Amold Golden Eagles’ has been in existence since 2002, and is intended to help people over the age of fifty to understand issues relating to the process of getting older, and of providing useful information for them and their needs. The issues may involve medical information, financial information, advice about housing or leisure interests or safety. Most importantly, the organisation is intended for the older people of Amold, and therefore often relates major concerns to local perspectives.
the police, liaison with local councillors about local issues, Council Housing and Tax Benefit advice, Health provision services in Gedling, the Gedling Community engagement worker, issues over the County Council cuts, which have affected the welfare of older people especially, information about County Enterprise Foods, with a taster event, and road safety for older persons’ powered vehicles.
The Amold Golden Eagles group usually meets on the first Friday of January, March, May, July, September and November. The meetings commence at 10.00 a.m. in the Wesleyan Reform Church at the junction of Furlong Street and Burford Street. All interested are welcome to attend.
On Tuesday 21st June there is to be a ‘Celebration of Older People’ event in Southwell Minster, which will be attended by some members of the Golden Eagles, although the event is open to all older people. There is an opportunity on that day for people to discover more about the Minster’s history and treasures through a variety of workshops, and there will be celebration service at 2.00 p.m., followed by tea.
Over the past year, meetings of the Amold Golden Eagles have included information from

Message from Vernon Coaker MP
During the last 10 years I have continued to really enjoy my position as the Member of Parliament for Gedling. I have tried to work hard for my constituents holding weekly surgeries from where I have helped many people with a wide range of problems/issues. I have been fortunate to have the opportunity of visiting schools, organisations and groups and have met many of my constituents personally. I remain very proud to represent Gedling in Parliament and I will continue to fight for a fair share for Gedling. Congratulations to the Arnold Local Forum for supporting the community over the last 10 years.
GEDLING AND COMMUNITY VOLUNTARY SERVICES Congratulations to Arnold Local Area Forum on their 10th Anniversary. Ten years ago Gedling District Council of Voluntary Service, as it was then called, had its offices in Arnot Hill Park and ran a Transport scheme, a Gardening Scheme a Volunteer Bureau; held an annual Community Fair on Arnold Market and we were involved with Nottingham Health Action Zone. However, due to changes in funding and demand for differing services some of these services are no longer offered. In 2005 the organization changed its name to Gedling and Community Voluntary Services (Gedling CVS) and became a company limited by guarantee. In 2006, the GCVS celebrated its 40th Anniversary in style, by holding its Annual General Meeting in the Sharpes Vauxhall Showroom (now Pentagon), St. John Robinson Way, Arnold. There are two main areas of work that the Gedling CVS has always been keen to support - children and families and older people. Sure Start has been very successful in several areas of Gedling Borough. The Gedling CVS has helped many parents transform their lives through learning and volunteering; and engaged young people in volunteering activities through their “RU? Volunteering” project. The Gedling Asian Elders Association, Caribbean Elders and the Older People’s Resource Network are very positive outcomes of Gedling CVS. A Chair based exercise program is very successful and enjoyed by all who take part, and helped Shopmobility in Arnold receive funding for new scooters. The Gedling CVS has been involved in the Area Based Activities in Netherfield, Warren Hill and Daybrook and in the Local Strategic Partnerships. It has re-invigorated the Gedling Volunteering Forum, enabling local Volunteer Involving Organisations to meet regularly and improve their knowledge in a variety of areas. They shared and discussed best practice to the mutual benefit of all. In 2010, the Pam Clipsham Volunteering Awards was introduced by the Gedling CVS in memory of Pam who had worked for Gedling CVS for over 14 years as Volunteer Bureau Manager and was a resident of Gedling Borough. Pam had dedicated her life to community service to others but sadly died in February 2010. The Awards are given at an annual event that recognises and celebrates volunteering in Gedling Borough. The Award categories include: Young Volunteer (under 25) Award, Individual Volunteering Award, Employee Volunteering, Organisation Support Volunteer and Business Award for businesses contributing to the local community.
Golden Amblers The Golden Amblers were formed with assistance from the ALAF. Since forming as an independent walking group the Amblers have become a victim of their own success and they have gone from strength to strength with nearly 70 members. They are not in a position to take on new members as there are insufficient walk leaders and added logistical problems of transport to and from the starting point of some walks. If enough new people wished to form a new group, the Golden Amblers would be happy to advise them on the requirements of starting a walking group. The Golden Amblers will have information available at the Arnold Carnival on the 16th and 17th June 2012.
The Gedling CVS moved to new first floor offices on Main Street, Gedling in 2010 and opened a ground floor shop called the “Community Hub” in 2011. A range of new services including a weekly work club have started, and the Gedling CVS also have the use of a community café - Harrisons, Main Street, Gedling in the late afternoon and evening. The Gedling CVS look forward to welcoming you to their premises and supporting the local people for many years to come.

ARNOLD IN BLOOM Arnold in Bloom (A-in-B) is a sub group of the Arnold Local Area Forum. It has a committee of five dedicated volunteers, and was set up with the key aim of making Arnold a better place to live and work by making people think about the local environment and to improve it. The A-in-B Group entered Britain in Bloom 2001 and the judges were very impressed with what Arnold had achieved since forming the group and awarded it “HIGHLY COMMENDED”. This inspired A-in-B to set up the annual Gardens Competition by encouraging local residents and businesses to enter their gardens and premises in the yearly competition. The number of participants has grown over the years. The A-in-B look forward to visiting all the participating gardens and to see all the lovely displays and results of all the hard work put in by local people in maintaining beautiful gardens. It is such a pleasure to meet old and new friends on their visits. Tony Tongue one of the A-in-B committee members spends a lot of his time and expertise in helping schools and encouraging them to become involved in a variety of projects ranging from planting bulbs to building water features to growing and maintaining fruit and vegetable allotments! The children love to watch the
transformation of a seed or bulb to a wonderful flower or something that they can eat! The A-in-B spend a lot of their time during the Summer encouraging local people to join in the A-in-B Garden Competition and also visiting participating gardens. They are very flexible and will only visit gardens by mutual arrangement, when participants feel happy about their garden and at a time that suits them. After the competition, an annual Presentation Evening is held at a local venue where all the entrants are invited and the winning gardens are presented a framed certificate. The evening concludes with a free buffet and networking with lots of people exchanging ideas and talking about gardening! If you live in the Arnold area and would like to participate in A-in-B Gardening Competition this year or want more details then please ring Joy on 0115 9566291 or Shirley on 0115 9208026. A-in-B will be at the ARNOLD CARNIVAL on the 16th and 17th June 2012 in the Craft Marquee. Come along and see their display, have a chat and or put your garden forward for the competition. LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ALL, HERES TO A GLORIOUS SUMMER – HAPPY GARDENING !!!!!

Olympics 2012 The last two times that the Olympics were in UK was 1908 and 1948 – respectively 104 or 64 years ago. As Bob said in my intro, he’d be extremely pleased to meet anyone who witnessed the 1908 games!!! However, there must be some of you who can recall the 1948 games? Why not share your memories with the ALAF and we would be delighted to publish a selection in the next Forum newsletter. With the technological advances, it is estimated that 80% of the world population will see some part of the games – so the UK will be on the world news. The games start with the arrival of the torch in UK on the 19 May 2012 and this will be relayed for 70 days with 66 evening celebrations. There will be 3000 torch bearers each covering 300 metres. The torch will be in Nottinghamshire on the 28 June 2012 with 115 individuals bearing the torch over the route (yet to be made public). A huge number of celebrations are being planned, including a full day event – so keep a look out in the local news. At the time of going to press, the Gedling Borough
Council is planning a number of play days and picnics in the park type events. The 3rd June 2012, is “The Big Lunch”, so why not get together with your family, friends, neighbours, local community and have a picnic in the park on this day? People are also being encouraged to adopt a red, white and blue theme and our Chairman Bob Tait has suggested that Arnold in Bloom promote gardeners to plant shrubs and flowers on this colour theme!! Nottinghamshire County Council’s initiative “Knots in Notts” is encouraging local people to pledge to make a positive difference in their local communities and create a lasting legacy. There is also £200 up for grabs to help community groups make a difference – visit www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk. The County Council is also making sure there is plenty happening for everyone to get involved in sport, culture and volunteering during this summer of sport. In addition to the local torch relay celebrations the Council’s country parks and the National Water Sports Centre will have lots of events and activities for you, your friends and family to enjoy a fun day out. For all the latest torch relay, event and activity information, visit www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/ sportforall
ARNOLD UNIVERSITY OF THE 3RD AGE (U3A)
'U3A' stands for 'The University of The Third Age'. It's not a university in the usual sense. Instead, it consists of self-help, self-managed, lifelong learning co-operatives all over the UK. Each local U3A is a charity in its own right, run entirely by volunteers. The Arnold U3A was formed in October 2010 and within 18 months has a membership of about 200 retired or semi-retired members who enjoy the wide variety of activities in one of its 19 interest groups!! All these groups have been formed by its members since the U3A was formed and range from Arts and Crafts; languages; Outings; Gardening; walking; discussion forums, etc. The U3A meets on the first Tuesday of every month between 1.00 and 3.30 pm at the Arnold Methodist Church, Arnold. Since the first meeting the membership has steadily increased and the members have had the opportunity to listen to a diverse range of speakers that have been educated, entertained, and tempted to sample new interest and hobbies. Anyone over the age of 55 is welcome to join the group or sub interest group and share the fellowship of this growing local, national and international organisation For further details please contact Norma Simpson, Chairman on 0115 9202781 or visit www.arnoldU3A.og
Arnold and Killisick Resident Association - AKRA
AKRA was formed in 2002/03 when the community came together to protest against and overturn a proposal to build a football stadium on Killisick Recreation Ground. Over the last four years AKRA and the Friends of the Hobbucks have organised and delivered an annual ‘Community Fun Day’ in the summer. This has been hugely successful with lots of activities for youngsters to enjoy all FREE. There is something for everyone, with many stalls and various agencies attending. This year, the Community Fun Day is to be held on Saturday the 30th June 2012 from 1 pm – 4 pm in the Beacon Baptist Church Hall and Killisick Community Centre with activities on the playing field on Killisick Road, Arnold. All are welcome. For further details please contact AKRA on 07837952778 or e-mail: ng5_akra@yahoo.co.uk
Gedling Play Forum The Play Forum has seen many changes since 2002 – some excellent some very challenging. The Gedling Play Partnership was formed in 2006 with founding membership including county, borough and parish councils along with community and voluntary groups. This partnership has led to improved play parks and more free play days and community events in Gedling. In 2008, due to a sharp increase in building costs, the Play Forum moved from a factory building in Arnold into a redundant Community Centre in Gedling that provides better facilities such as: a better scrap store; training area; outside area; growing spaces; and their own car park. The office services have also been improved with a colour photocopier that in the first year alone has printed over 23000 copies of documents such as booklets and play activities. Other improvements include; a drop in area for parents with children with additional needs; craft workshops during parents drop in sessions; new play equipment loan service for these families; and extending the membership to include voluntary craft groups of all ages, including retirement homes and additional needs adults groups. The Play Forum, depending on funding secured has trained and supported between 30 and 450 individuals per year, and saved groups around £38000. Additionally, the Play Forum has helped many groups with funding applications and ideas training. Despite meeting and exceeding all targets the grant aid income has been reduced by more than 50% which leaves the Play Forum facing an uncertain future. The Play Forum only has one paid member of staff and an army of dedicated volunteers who freely give their time and expertise at the many community and play days run by the Play Forum. During 2012, the Play Forum is planning to deliver 16 free events. The Play Forum would like to thank everyone who has supported it over the last 10 years including Awards for All, Nottinghamshire County Council, Gedling Borough Council, and especially all the local businesses that have supplied their scrap store with end of lines, reusable waste and very interesting off cuts used by their members in creative play – their generosity has helped the Play Forum to provide play activities and resources to thousands of children and families in our borough. The Friends of the Hobbucks group was established in 2007 by local residents to improve an open space for community use. The Hobbucks area was badly maintained; neglected and used for many forms of anti-social behaviour (fly tipping, drug and alcohol taking). Over the last five years the Friends Group has, with help from funding through the Nottinghamshire County Council’s Building Better Communities and Local Improvement Scheme had two new footpaths installed and installed of a wild life pond for the local school children to do pond dipping. Two interpretation boards and two wild flower meadows have been introduced on the Hobbucks courtesy of Lottery funding. The Friends Group do regular litter picks and the verges adjacent to the footpaths are kept neat and tidy by the constant mowing by one of their hard working committee members. The improvements have attracted joggers, bird watchers, dog walkers and local families to walk and enjoy the local area. For further information please contact Jo Blackstock by email on blackstockfamily@ hotmail.com

Arnold Local History Group The Committee and members of the Arnold Local History Group would like to congratulate the Local Area Forum for 10 years of bringing together and supporting the various organisations that make its membership. The History Group held its inaugural meeting on 20th February 2007 and aims to: • Encourage and support an interest in the history of Arnold and its surrounds • Provide networking opportunities for access to and sharing of information • Help conserve and archive material providing a historical record of the area. Over the 5 years the Group has enjoyed many speakers on diverse subjects of local interest but occasionally other interests are introduced but all have been extremely well accepted. The Group is growing in strength and currently has 130 members. The Group meets at Bonington House (The Labour Club) High Street, Arnold and the programme for the next 3 months is as follows: • 17 April 2012 "Their Names will live on" by Andy Smart, Nottingham Post Bygones • 15 May 2012 "Nottingham's Forgotten Theatre" by Michael Payne • 19 June 2012 "The Victoria County History Project" by Eric Dove. There will be no meetings in July and August. Annual membership is £5 (Individual); £6 (Family) plus entry of £1/£2 Members/Non members. Everyone is most welcome, and the group looks forward to meeting you. For further information please contact John Ward - 0115 926 5627
SCIENCE ON STAGE Science on Stage is a non-profit organisation, founded by Jon Wakefield and Dave Quick in 1995, to bring together young people and adults in exciting venues with the very best in technical and musical support in order to fulfil two main purposes: extending performance skills, and developing a feel for the scientific concepts and principles that shape our modern world. Since it foundation, Science on Stage has worked with performers, many from Arnold, to put on a new science based production each year. Appearing at The Albert Hall, The Playhouse, Covent Garden and The Royal Centre, a cast of over 300 musicians, dancers, artists and demonstrators join together for a critical, scientific and artistic examination of important and controversial issues such as: global
warming, food waste and genetic engineering. On April 21st 2012 at the Royal Centre a new show “Fusion, Man and Machine” will be performed. The show takes a closer look into a near future where technology enhances, supplements or replaces biological systems within the human body itself. It could all add up to a world in which healthy (and wealthy) humans will have the opportunity to be much more than they are now. Just some of many questions: Will there be an underclass? Will some of us cling to natural raw humanity out of choice? Will conflict arise? A wide range of music used by Science on Stage is available direct from Science on Stage (www.scienceonstage.co.uk) or Piper Publishing or a download from ‘Cadenza One’

Whether it is vandalism, fly-tipping or drunken behaviour, antisocial behaviour can have a huge impact on the quality of your life. You have highlighted it as a key concern so the beat team here in Arnold has listed it as one of our three priorities for the next three months. A lot of work has already been done to combat incidents of antisocial behaviour with officers working closely with schools, the local authorities and parents. And over the coming months we will continue to conduct patrols in known hotspots in order to identify troublemakers and take appropriate action. One example of this being put into practice was how two PCSOs dealt with two teenagers caught spraying graffiti in Arnot Hill Park. PCSOs Anthony Sams and Darren Scatcherd caught the 16 and 17-year-olds spray-painting the skateboard area of the park. But instead of arresting them for criminal damage, the officers decided to pursue a new approach to resolving criminal matters, known as Restorative Justice. This method attempts to bring about a swift and meaningful conclusion
Both teenagers were very cooperative and their parents were very supportive of the course of action which saw the pair working alongside Gedling Borough Council Park Rangers to plant flowers around the park in preparation for Spring. They were also introduced to those people who pick up litter and who cleaned off their graffiti. Shop lifting in Arnold Town Centre is also among the top of our list of priorities. The theft of purses, handbags and items from stores was highlighted as a concern by you. We listened to this and have drawn up a plan of how to prevent and detect offences over the next three months. Officers will be working closely with camera control and also local shop keepers and managers to deliver crime prevention advice and stop known shop lifters in the area. Remember, you too can be kept up-to-date about what is happening in Arnold by signing up to Nottinghamshire Police’s Neighbourhood Alert system. By becoming a member, you will receive updates and can use the site to report information about suspicious behaviour and antisocial behaviour in your area. It is completely free to use, and you decide how and when you would like to receive alerts and control who can send you information. For more information and to sign-up visit https://www. nottinghamshirealert.co.uk/

Luke Barton
by Bob Massey
In the last cold spell most of us were glad to put on a pair of socks to keep our feet warm. Today they are readily and cheaply available; a shaped garment to fit the foot made in one piece with only the toe stitched on to complete the manufacture. Stocking or hose have been worn as either a fashion garment or for practical reasons for many centuries. They were originally knitted by hand, first on needles and then by machines as a flat piece of cloth which had to be sown up to produce the finished product. The fact that we now have a cheap ready finished produced is due in part to a little known man called Luke Barton, who by 1832 was living and working in Arnold as a Watch maker. Luke was born in Collingham, the son of Thomas and Mary Barton and Christened at St Johns Church, Collingham on 21st June 1800. Little is known of his early life. On 11th May, 1821, he married Sarah Oats from Watnall. Sarah was pregnant at the time and gave birth to a son who she named John Oats even though she was married to Luke by this time. This would suggest that John was not Lukes child. By 1824 Barton was in business in Kimberley with two others, William Wilkinson and William Bingham, as makers of twistmachines, bobbins, and carriages but the business was dissolved by mutual consent on 13th April 1825. Sarah and Luke had two children, James born 1826 and Mary born 1831. The family moved to Arnold around 1832. During their
time in Arnold they had two further children, George in 1834 and Samuel in 1836. In 1838, Luke Barton received a patent for the invention of the steam or waterpowered wide rotary frame machine. This knitting machine could automatically produce tubular cloth and had several workplaces side by side. Using the lengthening machine, the heel was attached to the length of the stocking, and then the foot top and sole were attached to the heel and length of the stocking with a hand-powered footing machine. With these over-length machines, it became possible for the start of factory production of socks and stockings. His work was not popular locally as it put framework knitters out of work and he had to move his family to Hyson Green. He continued to develop his ideas with other patents and this brought him to the attention of A.J Mundella who took him into the company of Hine and Mundella where he continued to develop machines for the hosiery industry. Barton separated from Sarah and when she died in 1862 he married his house keeper Mary Simmons by whom he already had two children, Matilda and Ann. Living quietly with his daughter Matilda ill health struck him in later life but he still continued to improve the machines, registering his last patent in 1874 just 5 years before his death at the age of 79.

If you love plants, want to share your knowledge or learn more, the Nottingham Branch of the Hardy Plant Society would love to hear from you. Our main interest is the enjoyment of perennial or hardy plants i.e. plants that usually die back over winter and pop back up in spring. We are an active and enthusiastic group. In winter months, from October to April, we organise a programme of talks by guest speakers on the second Friday of the month in West Bridgford Community Hall, Church Drive, West Bridgford, Nottingham NG2 6AY at 7.30 p.m. In the summer, when there are no monthly meetings, we arrange coach trips to inspirational gardens not generally open to the public. We have our own garden, known as The Secret Garden (pictured above), a small walled botanic garden at Wollaton Hall and Deer Park in Wollaton, Nottingham tended by a group of volunteer members for over 30 years! From Easter to the end of September the garden is open to the public on Sundays from 2-4pm. Plants grown in the garden or donated by members are sold at very reasonable prices to raise funds. Local groups/societies are welcome to visit the garden during summer afternoons or evenings. To find out more about our group, visit our website www.hardy-plant.org. uk/groups/nottingham , or contact Sylvia Bennett tel 01949 836882, email muzb@ btinternet.com.

The Lazy Gardener.... gets down and dirty
As I explained in the last edition I am at best a reluctant gardener, however I harbour romantic notions of tiptoeing through the veggie beds picking plump cabbages and lovely comedy shaped carrots....so we have dedicated a third of our garden over to growing our own food. Using offcuts of tanalised decking and other odds and sods of wood that we found we have fashioned four small raised beds. Digging the soil over and sieving the pebbles out was the best upper body workout I have had in ages. After covering with heavy duty polythene to warm the soil (advice from a library book) we are ready to plan exactly what to grow. Sarah Mulholland, a Grow Your Own enthusiast whose partner discovered allotmenting in his late thirties and now runs a small veg box scheme; Red Earth Organics (01636 812105) has kindly offered the following advice on picking seeds; “Seed buying can be confusing. There are hybrid or heritage seeds, organic and non-oganic. Put simply, hybrids are developed by crossing two different plants from the same family but with different qualities like colour, size or flavour. Heritage (or heirloom) seeds come from plants that were grown historically but have not been used in modern agriculture on a large scale. Heritage plants can be selected for their ability to grow in specific soil or because the flavour or appearance is appealing. From experience I can recommend the following heritage crops: Tomatoes - Brandywine and Ivoty Egg Beans - Cosse Violette Lettuce - Marvel of 4 Seasons and Black Seeded Simpson Hybrids are widely available and tend to assure reasonably certain results, predictable crops and familiar flavours, whereas heritage can give less uniform results but offer unusual flavours, colours and variety. By checking the preferred conditions of heritage you can optimise yield by selecting seeds best suited to
your soil and weather. Heritage fruit and vegetables can be relatively easy to grow and by doing so you are also helping to preserve the gene pool and prevent monoculturism. Do be prepared for mixed results. That is both the joy and the frustration of moving from the staple hybrid seeds available everywhere and the delight in discovering a new lettuce, an unfamiliar tomato or beetroot easily outweighs the frustration of a seed batch that does not flourish as you hoped.” WOW! I had no idea....
In my dreams!!! With raised beds it is better for the soil to rotate crops on a four year cycle and also to grow similar crops in each bed. So we will have carrots, parsnips & celeriac in one bed, kale, calabrese, radish and rocket in another, spinach, swiss chard beetroot and lettuce together and french beans and peas in the last bed. We are growing potatoes in a special grower and plan to use grow bags for tomatoes. After hearing what Sarah had to say about seeds I am going to try and grow some heritage crops as well as hybrids and report back. As I type there is snow on the ground so all work has stopped and we are doing plenty of research using library books and the internet to plan the various types of each vegetable we plan to buy. To read more of Sarah’s guidance on seed types go to www.redearthorganics. co.uk/news.asp?Article=88 © Ali Wale

Al’s D.I.Y. Guide
Spring Cleaning?
Running into spring with such mild conditions as these gives us an opportunity to start some things early. Will we be having a really long summer? I hope so! While you can, I suggest getting out there and doing some of the prep work for the maintenance you should do in summer giving you more time to relax and enjoy when it’s hot. External painting will be covered separately in the next issue. If you have PVC-u windows, some of the older ones may have yellowed and become dirty. “De.Solv.It” make a specific cleaner which works really well on the white ones, it will really brighten up the look of your home. Clean your patios, decks and driveways of all the winter slime now, normally just jetwashing does the trick. If you have block pavers then it’s best to use a block paving brush, you don’t want to jet out the sand keeping them in place. This is laborious and time consuming but worth it. If your deck is more than 3 years old then use Cuprinol Decking Treatment and a roller/ brush with pole-really quick and easy! The inimitable Jeyes Fluid with the correct dilutions is great for much outdoor cleaningremember the distinctive smell? If you don’t have the time/inclination you can call in the friendly local experts on 0115 8377121. Feel free to ask any questions via phone or email (enquiries@atlanticorp.co.uk). “Like” our Facebook page for regular tips and competitions www.facebook.com/ Atlanticorp

“Move fast without sacrificing the equity in your home” is the message from local property buyer, Oliver.
Many companies offer to buy your house quick, but expect a large hit on your sale price. It doesn’t have to be this way! Oliver offers a local home buying service that is fair, ethical and avoids the time and cost associated with estate agents, HIPs and readying your property for sale. Oliver will first seek to understand what you are trying to achieve by selling and deliver a tailored solution that works for you. What amazes people the most is how fast and simple the whole process is. From contacting Oliver to handing over the keys in less than 14 days is typical.

DYING TO SAVE MONEY?
Many people fail to sweep their chimney or service appliances at regular intervals, either due to the fact that they are unaware of the maintenance requirements, the potential consequences, or for financial reasons. The use of an unregistered chimney sweep can be dangerous; it is only through established trade organisations such as the Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps that a customer can have confidence that the job they are paying for is done correctly, and that safety checks will have been made. Upon completion, a registered chimney sweep will issue an approved certificate.

CHIMNEY FIRES
UK fire statistics indicate that there are over 31,000 domestic chimney fires a year. These are largely due to infrequent sweeping which results in a build-up of flammable tar within the appliance or flue. Insurance companies may refuse claims due to chimney fires unless the chimney has been swept by a registered chimney sweep where a certificate has been issued. The Councillor’s Division Fund aims to benefit organisations, groups or individuals which are active in their community for one-off causes and the councillor decides which schemes in their ward should get a contribution. Recent grants include £250 for a Christmas party for local residents at a community centre, £1,000 to replace a charity shop’s glass frontage and £500 for an allotment group to develop a wild flower area. Councillor Reg Adair, Cabinet Member for Finance and Property at the County Council, said: "County Councillors are active in finding good causes in their ward for a share of their Division Fund money. However, we would encourage you to get in contact with your local councillor if you or your community group is struggling to find the money for a worthwhile one-off project or activity.” County Councillors are only able to use their fund for causes within their ward. People wishing to put forward a request for a Councillors Division Fund grant should contact their local County Councillor whose contact details are available by visiting the Council’s website at www.nottinghamshire. gov.uk or by telephoning the authority on 08449 80 80 80.

Cat fosterers urgently needed! Animal Accident Rescue Unit was created to provide a free ambulance service for pet owners without the means to travel to the vets themselves. Since then, it has become a badly needed lifeline, also taking in sick and injured animals & birds, arranging for their treatment and caring for them in foster homes until either their owner can be traced or new homes can be found. The Charity is staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers working from their own homes. We’ve taken in so many cats over the last few months that we desperately need new fosterers who can provide a temporary home for one of our rescued cats. If you think you can help us, please ring our Recruitment Officer on 0115 9563799.
Volunteer Drivers Needed! Local Nottingham-based charity Animal Accident Rescue Unit are looking for volunteer drivers with their own car who have a couple of hours to spare during the daytime. We really need your help to transport rescued animals to and from vets and foster homes.
