Situated in the heart of Nottingham, Revolucion de Cuba transports you straight to the heart of Havana. Located in a stunning building on Market Street, the cantina takes your breath away. With its high ceilings, shabby yet stylish interior and buzzing atmosphere the only thing missing was the 90 degree heat! Throughout our meal we were treated to live music from a great salsa band. We started our meal with pinchos (nibbles); crispy tortilla chips with homemade guacamole and fresh salsa. Our tapas plates were mouthwatering; patatas bravas, Cajun cream mushrooms, gambas pil pil (succulent king prawns tossed in butter, chilli, garlic and lime), pork belly skewers, chicken rumba skewers and honey roast veg. One member of our party went for the steak – cooked to perfection and served with a creamy rum sauce (of course!) We managed to share a mini dessert selection and a couple of cheeky cocktails. Gin served in a teapot was a first for me (bramble tea) and hot buttered rum hit the spot. After a meal, we headed upstairs where Salsa lessons had been held earlier. The atmosphere was

positively convivial! We were impressed with the dancing, it definitely felt like the streets of Havana rather than Nottingham. The upstairs bar also hosts Fiesta Friday!!! See their website for a run down of what they have to offer. Happy Hour with 2-4-1 cocktails is Monday to Saturday 5pm until 7pm, plus it is worth noting ‘Havana great time on Sunday’ where tapas, cocktails and coffee are 2-4-1. A great deal! Revolucion de Cuba really does have the WOW factor. Even the toilets are a talking point. Whether you're after the finest Cuban coffee, a full on Latin feast, classic cocktails or great live music, we've got it all at Revolucion de Cuba Nottingham.

Chocolate Treats Most of us love chocolate, eating it, cooking with it, drinking it. But did you know that people have been enjoying chocolate for over 4000 years? Archeologists have found evidence that ancient cultures living in present-day Mexico as early as 1900BC consumed a bitter drink cultivated from cacao plants. It is even claimed that the 16th Century Aztec Emperor Montezuma drank around 3 gallons a day as he believed the bitter beverage to be an aphrodisiac! Chocolate spread (no pun intended!) to Europe through the Spanish conquistadors and when a Spanish Princess married King Louis XIII the popularity of chocolate continued through the royal courts.

It was still rare and expensive however and chocolate remained a treat only for the aristocracy until a Dutch chemist invented the cocoa press in 1828 enabling, for the first time, a dry powder to be extracted from the cacao beans that could then be used in confectionary. J S Fry & Sons produced the first solid chocolate bar in 1874 and we have never looked back, Lindt, Cadbury, Mars, Hershey are all now household names. Despite the availability and affordability of chocolate, it still remains a special treat, for a gift, for a delicious pudding, to celebrate Easter, birthdays, Valentine’s day or just to say “thank you”. If you fancy some special chocolate treats, try one of these simple recipes.

Abby Brennan is a café-owner, food writer, speaker and small/start-up food-business mentor. You can find her blog at fishwifeskitchen.com

Seriously Easy Chocolate Truffles This recipe makes a lot of Truffles (about 60), you can halve the ingredients if you prefer, or make loads, vary the flavourings and coatings and give as a special gift. 200g Cream Cheese, softened 350g icing sugar, sifted 500g plain chocolate (melted slowly in a heat-proof bowl over simmering hot water) 1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla essence Beat cream cheese in a large bowl until smooth. Gradually beat in the icing sugar until fully blended. Stir in the melted chocolate and vanilla until no white streaks remain. Refrigerate for roughly about an hour and then shape into bite-sized balls. You can roll the truffles in ground nuts, desiccated coconut, icing sugar or chocolate sprinkles or you can omit the vanilla and add a flavoured liqueur such as coffee, orange or almond.

Mars Bar Mousse This makes a very rich mousse so serve in tiny portions! 2 full sized Mars Bars 50ml milk 4 tbsp cocoa powder 3 large egg whites mini chocolate eggs for decoration Carefully slice up the Mars Bars roughly into quarters, and put along with the milk and cocoa in a solid-based saucepan. Heat on a very low temperature, stirring constantly until all the chocolate has melted. Transfer to a bowl and leave to cool for about 15 minutes. Whisk this mixture frequently to ensure it remains blended and smooth. Whisk the egg whites in a separate, clean, dry bowl until softly peaking. Use a metal spoon to fold half the whites into the the chocolate sauce to lighten it, then fold in the remainder. Turn the mixture into about 8 small cups (or sherry glasses) and chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours before serving. Decorate with chocolate mini eggs or chocolate shavings

Chocolate Krispie Egg 175g milk chocolate, broken into pieces 50g Rice Krispies cereal Gently melt the chocolate pieces in a heatproof bowl over simmering water, or microwave on a low heat (checking regularly). Stir until smooth and then remove from the heat and stir in the Rice Krispies, mix well until until the Krispies are full coated with chocolate. Spoon the mix into one half of your egg mould and press down using the back of a metal spoon, make you sure you cover the whole mould but leave a deep dip in the middle and leave a thick edge. Cool in the fridge until set (15 mins or so). Once cool fill with mini chocolate eggs, chocolate buttons or other sweets of your choice, wrap in a pretty ribbon and give as a gift (or polish off yourself if you prefer!).

I have been Childminding since 2008 and have an 8 year old daughter. I find childminding very rewarding with no two days ever being the same. I have been extremely fortunate to be able to build excellent working relationships with many lovely families who I see as an extension of my own family. My home is a caring, safe and stimulating environment giving children lots of opportunity to have fun and learn through play. Here is what one parent has to say... "Fantastic home from home childcare. We have used Lisa since 2012 and would thoroughly recommend. Her child centred approach combining both nurturing and creativity has allowed our daughter to thrive in her care and feel safe and comfortable. Overall an outstanding childminder who is organised, dependable, caring and maintains the highest standards" - Mrs Notley.

James Brindley by Bob Massey

Over the centuries, the people of Arnold have regularly joined the armed services. For many it was a way out of poverty and provided a way to support their families. James Brindley was born in Arnold around 1788 and joined the army around 1808 as a private soldier in the 83rd Regiment of Foot. His regiment served in the West Indies, South Africa and the Peninsular War. After the end of the wars with France Brindley spent much of his time in colonial garrisons. The 83rd also fought in the Ceylon Great Rebellion of 1817–18. Brindley survived these engagments and was discharged in 1822 aged 34 when he became an out-pensioner belonging to the Chelsea Hospital. He returned to his home in Arnold and married a local girl, Mary Ann Searcey, on 25 April 1823. In 1825 it was decided that three companies of army veterans would be raised in Great Britain. “Orders have been issued at home for raising three veteran companies, by volunteers, from the out-pensioners belonging to Chelsea Hospital. To consist of three serjeants, three corporals, and fifty privates, to serve in Van Diemen’s Land( Tasmainia ) and New South Wales. They are to act as superintendents and overseers over the prisoners, are to have the full pay of the cavalry, namely serjeants, 2s 2d; corporals, 1s 7 ½ d; and privates 1 s 2 d a day, with free rations. (This being the highest rate of pay in the army) The married men will be allowed to take out their families.” Ref: Hobart Town Gazette 25 March 1826

James Brindley re-enlisted in 1826 in the

No. 3 Company Royal New South Wales Veterans. The whole regiment was made up of ex-soldiers who acted as guards for convicts being transported on convict ships to Australia. It was designed as a one way trip as at the completion of two years service in the colony they were allowed to take land grants and settle. Brindley embarked with his wife on the convict ship John Barry on 26th August 1826. James Brindley served his time aboard ship and then his two years in Hobart. He was discharged in Australia after completion of his service in 1830 aged 42. Life was a lot easier for the Veteran than that of the regular soldier’s. One advantage the Veteran Battalions had over other Regiments was that they were all allowed to take their wives. Other Regiments had a six wives per Company limit. Their duties were also made easier to accommodate their age and physical condition. James and Mary had two children after arriving in Hobart, Samuel James born 1829 and Charlotte born 1833. They moved to Sydney in 1847. James died there on 27th August and is buried in Devonshire Street Cemetery, Sydney. He was only 55. His widow Mary remarried a local man, James Roberts, in Hobart in 1848. James and Mary’s daughter Charlotte eventually married Thomas Perkins who, although himself an ex-convict, joined the police in Evansdale, South Australia and rose to the rank of Chief Constable.

I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG5 magazine.

Magazines is 10 Still going strong and getting stronger thanks to all our advertisers, readers and contributors. It’s hard to believe it was 10 years ago that we started ng magazines, or ‘ng5’ as we were known back then!!

With us from the start... “I set up my business at the same time as ng mags and have been with them right from the start. They have been the best form of advertising for me, and the staff are always friendly and ready to help, such a useful magazine”. Mark Maggs - All Weathers Plumbing

“I met Cat & Ali 10 years ago when our business manager at the bank introduced us. They have always been good to me and I get a lot of customers from the mags. Some have been with me the whole 10 years and I’m still getting regular ones now” Andy Crowley - AKJ Contracts.

10 years of helping local businesses, providing a service to our readers and supporting the local community, it has been an amazing journey. We started distributing the ng5 in Arnold in May 2006 to 5000 homes and businesses, and I mean distributing - we used to post all the mags ourselves in the early days. This would be impossible now because we deliver 8 magazines to 93,000 so rely on a lot of our readers who have become distributors for us. We would like to say a great big thank you to all our readers, distributors, contributors and advertisers, without whom this would not have been possible.

Feeling Positive! Ok, so here is a very frequent question we are asked about general health, nutrition and fitness. ‘Why am I failing?’ Let me stop you there for one second... what is failure? Is it stalling weight loss? Is it not completing a fitness programme due to exhaustion? There are many reasons we put ourselves down due to what we think is failure. What we tend to forget is how far we have come. About this time of the year, the new year resolutions are being tested. Have you maintained a healthier diet? Really?? Or have you reverted back to old ways but justifying it now by regularly exercising? If this is the case then yes, falling back into old unhealthy eating habits is a negative step, but you are still dedicated to making healthy life choices. Exercising regularly is still a positive step forward therefore you are still going in the right direction. Yes, progress may be slow, or slower than expected, the scales may be stuck for a week or two, but this doesn’t mean you are failing. There are so so many factors, variables, causes and effects to take into account when it comes to a slowing momentum in achieving a goal you set out to accomplish at the start of your journey. Ask yourself, how many times have you moved the goal posts to achieve something better than you expected? Then you question yourself when results are slow, forgetting you have already achieved your original goal! When you work with a health coach, like myself, we take into account many variables and break them down to really get to understand the

person we are helping. One of our most successful clients came to us with a poor diet and heavy social life that lead to an unhealthy lifestyle and sadly brought on painful dietary gout. Suffering in pain for too long, we got to work breaking down his lifestyle choices and establilshing some new routines. After six months working closely with us, this guy managed to alter his daily diet which in turn meant altering his social habits. We educated him on the cause and effect of choices that he was making and got him physically active by working through a progressive training programme. To this day he is one of our hardest working clients and most importantly, has managed to reverse the dietary gout he suffered from. No longer in pain, with our support, he continues to be physically active and is able to lead a healthier life. Most of us measure our achievements on the number the scales show us. If it is down we praise ourselves, if it is up we punish ourselves and question our dedication. Try instead to focus more on how you feel. Do your clothes fit better? Are you stronger? More alert? Sleeping better? These are all signs of positive forward progression and improving health. Improving your health should be taken as a whole rather than focusing on one thing - like the numbers on the scales. Forget the one negative and count all the positives. Be positive, think positive, produce a positive outcome.

Volunteers Play A Key Role at Wildlife Trust’s “Secret Garden” Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, the county’s largest locally based environmental charity, is probably best known for its management of the ever popular Attenborough Nature Reserve near Beeston. This site, which covers almost 150 hectares, is probably what most people think of as a typical nature reserve, but amongst the 66 other sites the charity cares for across the county there are a few less than typical sites. One of the most unusual reserves in the Trust’s estate is Faith Marriott Reserve just off Mapperley Plains. The area was left to the charity as part of a legacy and today consists of an area of mature woodland and a wildlife garden containing many original 1930’s features from when the site formed part of a much larger garden for a nearby house.

As the reserve is very small and nestles within a quiet residential area (Corncrake Drive) off Ramsey Drive, it is not open to the public all the time. Instead it is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays and any visitors travelling by car are asked to park on Ramsey Drive. Much of the restoration of the site has been carried out by volunteers and a volunteer group meets on the first Saturday of each month to tend to the wildlife garden. If you would like to get involved please call 0115 958 8242. More information about Faith Marriott Nature Reserve and the other wildlife havens cared for by Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust can be found at www. nottinghamshirewildlife.org

This really is a nature reserve with a difference, giving the Trust a chance to demonstrate wildlife friendly gardening and providing visitors with an opportunity to explore a beautiful garden with a pond, wildflower garden and the woodland area.

Renal Unit Gets A Welcome Boost

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life series is back for 2016 and now open for entries. Easter chocolates weighing you down? Overindulged in the seasonal Crème Egg? Work off all that excess by choosing your 2016 Race for Life event and help us bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. Choose from our 5k, 10k and Pretty Muddy® fundraising events and start your training today. So ladies, lace up your trainers and kick start your training to help beat cancer sooner. SIGN UP NOW AT RACEFORLIFE.ORG

Local lady, Deborah Goodson, has been busy fundraising for the Nottingham City Hospital Renal Unit where she was very lucky to have had a transplant in 2009. Deborah became ill in 2006 with a very rare kidney illness that took away both her kidneys. This meant she was on dialysis until her transplant in 2009. Deborah’s brother Mark very generously donated a kidney. Deborah says; “I can never repay him for doing that, it has changed my life.” As a way of saying thank you for the wonderful care she received over the last nine years Deborah organises fund raising events to give something back. “The Renal Unit at NCH is fantastic. All the staff are so caring and professional” says Deborah. The latest event was held at Arnold Liberal Club in January. There was live music from Fraud Squad who got the party started and also donated some of their fee back into the funds. Adam Garcia then entertained guests with his close up magic tricks.

Give time; beat cancer sooner. Volunteers are an essential part of Race for Life. Without them our events simply couldn’t take place. By volunteering, you can get: Hands-on experience with people from all walks of life, while contributing to a worthwhile cause. Personal satisfaction of knowing you’re helping to make a real difference in the fight against cancer. The opportunity to meet new people, and help out in your local community. Join our volunteer army and help beat cancer sooner. Sign up to volunteer at Race for Life 2016 today; RACEFORLIFE.ORG/VOLUNTEER

There were lots of very generous donations for the auction and raffle, all helping to make the event a great success. Our compere, Mr Frank Corrigan not only entertained but managed to boost the funds with his unique handling of the auction. The final total raised was £3303.00! The most ever raised. The money will be split between the Renal Unit and Renal research which is so very important in trying to find cures for Renal illnesses. Deborah would like to thank everyone so much for their generosity and kindness.

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team....

Keep Your Doors Locked The spring arriving can mean only one thing; sheds, garages and doors are unlocked. Nottinghamshire Police reminds you to enhance the security in your homes and gardens. First of all, keep doors locked and when you are working in the garden or on your car close your shed or garage door. Also, check that your home insurance extends to the belongings you keep in your outbuildings. Also, remember to lock your front and back doors if you are away from home. It sounds like basic common sense, but some people forget to do this when going out especially in a rush. Locking your doors will take a matter of minutes and will give you peace of mind whilst away. It may sound silly but also lock your doors when you are home and in the garden, and don’t leave windows open in unattended rooms. Would you notice if someone snatched your mobile phone through an open window or hopped in and grabbed your laptop from the coffee table? Please be vigilant.

Finally, take a moment to consider the process you go through when answering a knock at your door. Do you know who is calling before you open it? Unfortunately, there are some dishonest people in this world. Always ask for identification and verify this by checking it against the telephone directory and calling the company they claim to work for. If you have any doubts about them, do not let them into your home. If they are genuine they will be more than willing to rearrange, by which time you can check they are who they claim to be, and ensure there is someone with you when they next call. We want you to be happy and safe in the warmer weather. Report anything suspicious to us on 101.

You As A Brand When considering your future, think of yourself as a product. You are trying to sell your expertise and skills to companies. It will be harder to convince someone to buy a product when its packaging is haphazard and sloppy. It is the same with yourself – maintaining a professional image is key. Things to consider: • What you wear – Maintaining a smart appearance is not only useful in creating a good first impression, but can also boost your confidence. • Your body language – Even if you are shaking with nerves, try to disguise it. Giving the appearance of confidence is more important than actually being confident. • Your speech – Try to keep your voice calm and controlled and don’t accidentally interrupt or talk over anyone else. • Email Addresses – It is extremely important to have a professional email address. Email addresses such as ‘poopsy@…’ and ‘missbabyface@…’ (both real life examples…) are inappropriate for anything professional. Create a separate professional email account if necessary. Something simple like ‘firstname.surname@…’ or a variation of this is best. When is this relevant? • Online – Employers are now using social media to browse the lives of interviewees so think about whether a post may come back to haunt you before you put it on there! • Interviews – Both telephone and face to face. Even when conducting telephone interviews (which many employers do in the first instance) you should be dressed as if you were in the same room. This will help you get into the moment and react professionally. Think of it as a method actor – playing the part of an assured, experienced professional. Just remember that you may meet potential contacts or employers at any time so always be polite and confident and try to dress in an appropriate way for important events.

I have 40 years experience in banking and finance. If you are looking to review exisiting Investments or Pensions or indeed looking to make new Investments for income/growth or both, I would be happy to help. It is crucial in today’s uncert ain financial climate that you regularly review your financial arrangements. At Tudor Court Financial Planning Ltd, we will arrange regular meetings at your home or our office to ensure that your financial goals are being achieved.

Formerly employed by Lloyds Bank for 32 years I specialise in life and critical illness cover for individuals and businesses. I am able to review existing arrangements and in most cases I am able to save you money and/or increase your level of protection. I am particularly interested in seeing people who have previously purchased Life/Critical Illness protection through banks, who may no longer have local support and who feel they may be paying too much for their cover.

pets Gorgeous George: ‘Look at me – FIV and fighting fit!’

Hedgehog

This month, George is appealing to readers for a home whilst explaining his condition. Former stray, George, aged about eight years, in foster with Animal Accident Rescue Unit explains: ‘I was at risk of being put to sleep just because I tested positive for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus), and had nowhere to go! But this local charity knew this slow-acting virus just depletes my white blood cells, making it harder for me to fight off infection. I’m fighting fit and expect to live to a good age!’ George was tested for FIV and FeLV (Feline Leukaemia) – the latter being a most different condition, sadly often confused with FIV. Briefly, FIV can only be transmitted between cats, not to humans or other animals. Apart from living indoors and with other FIV cats, all George wants is lovely company with food to feast on, laps to lounge on, and cuddles! He is neutered, fully vaccinated, micro-chipped and litter-trained. To ask about gorgeous George, contact the Adoption Volunteer on 0115-9985063 after 6pm, leaving your contact details, or email admin@aaru.org.uk. This number must not be used for other enquiries. Volunteers will reply as soon as possible, and all adoptions require a successful homecheck. The charity does not deal with healthy strays and unwanted pets; only animals and birds needing veterinary help, either neglected, injured or vulnerable, eg pregnancy, age (kittens or elderly). Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should call, leaving a detailed message if necessary, for the volunteer telephone operators on 0115-9321555. For details on volunteering, fostering or the lovely animals awaiting homes visit www.animalaccident. org.uk.

Tales Local author, Victoria Harwood, is keen to raise awareness around hedgehogs. The author, based in Nottingham, has written a number of books in a series called Bushhog tails and donates all profits to wildlife charities. The population of hedgehogs has really declined in just a few years due to environmental changes and Victoria is appealing for us all to help. Hedgehogs will be coming out of hibernation In March. You can help by leaving some nice meaty cat food out for your little visitors with some fresh water. Or you can get some proper hedgehog food from most pet shops. It is important to always remember that hedgehogs are lactose intolerant so they must not have milk. They must not have bread either as this can swell their tiny stomachs and make them very sick. If neighbours agree, a tiny hole in the fence will allow the hedgehogs to roam freely from garden to garden in search for food. Hedgehogs are nocturnal creatures so if you see one out in the daytime then it could be sick and might need urgent help. Contact http://www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk/ if you are worried about a hedgehog. They will give you the correct advice for helping it. For more information on Victoria’s books and some interesting wildlife facts visit Victoria’s facebook page - Bush-Hog-Tails.
