kids The Flying High Trust hosts super art event for 9 primary schools!
Ernehale Junior School Footballers are Gedling Champions!
Children from all over Nottinghamshire came together at Bilsthorpe Flying High Academy for an art event with the help of professional artist Sarah Palmer.
The team won all of their league matches and went on to win the final!
The children came from nine different schools; all part of The Flying High Trust, a primary schools’ multi-academy trust founded in Nottinghamshire and based at Cotgrave. The idea behind the event was simple says Chris Wheatley, Chief Executive Officer at The Flying High Trust. “The Trust Arts event has been a huge success, bringing together children from across our nine schools who demonstrate a real talent and passion for the arts.” Artist Sarah Palmer said that various skills were needed to create the works of art, “It is a lovely opportunity for the children to get together and create part of a large installation for their awards ceremony. They have done an amazing job! The work has been quite technical, they have needed patience and an understanding of mathematics as well as art and they have made a really good job of it.” The Flying High Trust has member primary academies all over Nottinghamshire including Ernehale Junior School (Arnold), Hillside Primary and Nursery School (Hucknall), The Flying High Academy (Ladybrook Mansfield), Beeston Fields Primary and Nursery School, Greythorn Primary School (West Bridgford) and Edwalton Primary School.

Ernehale Junior School’s football team have triumphed after winning the Gedling Primary Schools Football Association cup. That victory comes on the back of the remarkable run that saw the team win all of their Gedling Schools District League matches to get to the final. Assistant coach Rebecca Bateman was at the final match against The Good Shepherd Primary Catholic Academy and said she was more nervous than team Ernehale, “I was a nervous wreck to be honest, but super proud of the team! Good Shepherd were always going to be a tough team to beat -but Ernehale did it in the end.” Captain of the team Charlie Arrowsmith said, “After going down 1-0 in the first half we really had to battle through, and we did, until we got a goal back in the second half. Then it went onto extra time.” The footballers said it had felt like a very long season and they were pleased that they had triumphed. Charlie said, “We really did a massive cheer when we won!”

ARNOLD SWIMMING CLUB NEWS
90th Birthday Celebrations!! A Glorious Summer ! Well not in terms of the weather – but a lot to celebrate at Arnold Swimming Club In June the Club (formed in 1926) had its own 90th Birthday celebration and members enjoyed a picnic afternoon with cake, inflatable sumo wrestling suits, space hopping and bouncy castle.
Competition Update Competitions have been fast and furious (just like our swimmers) including the East Midlands Regional Swimming Championships at Ponds Forge and Corby International Pool – congratulations to Ellie Blakey, Maje Felten, Kyra MacDonald, Charly Neilson, Milly Sale, Thomas White, Samuel Williams, Ben Cuthill, Aimee Glendenning and Henry Osborne. Success continued at the Club’s own trophy gala, the Gladys Hull Cup, with 2 ASC teams finishing 1st and 3rd on the night with 43 Personal Best (PBs) swims and 3 Club records (CRs). At the East Midlands Disability Swimming Championships Ted Smiley swam and medalled. After completion of the final round of the Derby and Notts Junior League, Arnold A finished 7th in the league whilst Arnold B came 28th out of 30 teams. On 11 June, competition took us to the Worksop Leisure Centre in the ASA Stage One Trophy Gala which saw the Club victorious and claim our 5th first place win in the last six galas. Having won 2 previous rounds, junior swimmers (8-12 years) came away as CHAMPIONS of the Leicestershire Diddy League after winning the final at Corby International Pool on 25 June. This is a great achievement in our first year in the competition and comes on the back of the successes in the ASA Stage One Trophy Galas and the Derby and Notts Junior League. Tired but happy and inspired ASC swimmers had another successful day at the Nottingham Northern Swimming Club Open Meet on 26 June at Harvey Haddon when 44 swimmers came home with 125 PBs and 4 CRs. Focus now switches to the Nottinghamshire ASA Summer Gala, after which the swimmers will be taking a break from competition over the school holidays, but will be back in training for preparation for the 2016 club championships. Congratulations to all swimmers who competed in all these galas you make us proud. All the above is a testament to the hard work of the coaches and swimmers over the last couple of years who together make the Club what it is today. Many thanks to the parents for their continued help and vocal support.

School Pupils Devise Language Survival Kit for Forest Players Transferred Abroad
WIN....
A PAIR OF TICKETS Year 9 pupils at Arnold Hill Academy have created “language survival kits” to be used by Nottingham Forest players when they are loaned to foreign teams. The 13 and 14 year-olds were set the challenge by Nottingham Forest as part of a new link-up between the school and the club aimed at bringing the curriculum alive. They were given two weeks to come up with packs containing vocabulary guides and audio CDs, which had to cover areas such as health and injuries, match report, changing room, social and on the pitch language. They also did illustrations and hand-made covers for the kits. Nottingham Forest striker, Tyler Walker, and Head of Education at Forest, Sean England, came to the school to congratulate the pupils on the finished products. After the winners were announced the pupils got to have their photos taken and to chat with England under 19/20 player Tyler, the son of Forest hero and former England player Des Walker. A free tour of the stadium and match tickets were the prizes for the winning groups. It’s the latest in an ongoing series of schoolbusiness link projects being organised by the Trent Academies Group, which oversees Arnold Hill, Rushcliffe School and The Farnborough Academy. authentic French restaurant in the heart of Nottingham I think it's fair to say Nottingham has plenty of restaurants. They come and they go, so it's refreshing to visit one that is long established and still full every night. Bistrot Pierre is an authentic French restaurant in the heart of Nottingham. Housed in an old bank on Milton Street it is steeped in character and charm. I have eaten in a number of their restaurants in Derby, Harrogate and Stratford upon Avon as well as Nottingham. In fact I even had my 50th birthday meal in the private dining room upstairs (a great idea if there is a few of you). Safe to say I love this place! Although Bistrot Pierre keep regulars happy with timeless classics like the Brioche starter with mushrooms and bacon and the melt in the mouth Boeuf Bourguignon, they also continually introduce new dishes to the menu keeping it fresh and interesting. For value for money they are hard to beat. From the pre-theatre menu (2 courses for ÂŁ14.95) to the monthly SoirĂŠe Gastronomique (six course set Our host was the charming Salvatore who talked us through the menu with a knowledge and enthusiasm that showed he clearly loved his job. We went for a mix of old favourites and specials. For our starters we chose deep fried goats cheese (amazing!) along with the brioche (always amazing!!). We also ordered the delightful honey roasted mini chorizo's and a plate of artisan bread with roasted garlic and a dip of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Great for sharing. Mains next. The steak and fries is always melt in the mouth and
cooked a perfect pink. Braised lamb shank with a rosemary, garlic and red wine sauce came on potato so tender. The Bouillabase (classic fish stew) was a sight to see and was absolutely delicious. The dessert menu caused us some consternation but in a nice way... were a cheese plate, frangipane and a strawberry fest that included strawberry ice cream, fresh strawberries, strawberry coulis and meringue. By this point we could hardly move! Bistrot Pierre have got it bang on. From the complimentary freshly baked French bread basket with Lescure butter that appears on your table to the amazing wine menu these guys food is outstanding, teamed with a it is easy to see why they are still going

Spruce up your Summer Salads Salads have come a long way since I was a child. My memories are of a rather uninspiring collection on a plate or in some wooden bowl with those wooden “salad” implements – usually a radish, a couple of lettuce leaves, a spring onion and a couple of tomatoes, with a slice of ham or a hard-boiled egg, and always undressed (except perhaps for a bit of Salad Cream). Salad dressings, extra-virgin olive oil and white wine vinegar were things we only saw on holidays abroad. It wasn’t always like this, of course, salads go back almost as long as food history itself. We know that mixed greens with a dressing were enjoyed by the ancient Greeks and Romans and as time progressed salads
(from the Latin “sal” - salted, as salt was a key ingredient in the dressings) they became more and more elaborate and complicated. In the 17th and 18th Centuries the “Grand” salads could have upwards of 20 different ingredients and form the centrepiece of the table. The “Insalata a La Reale or “Royal Salad” contained 27 different ingredients including exotic items such as comfits, capers, pumpkin, dried fruits, olives and pomegranate seeds. Salads have undergone a renaissance in recent years and are nothing like the simple fare of my childhood. But if you are still stuck in a bit of rut when it comes to summer suppers, why not try one of these recipes and ring the changes.

of readers say they use the magazine... the vast majority say this is for finding local trade’s people and getting information on what’s happening in the local area. Competitions, recipes, history pages and restaurant reviews were also popular.
99.2%
of readers said the magazine met their needs, which is great news... we must be doing something right!
Those who used local trades out of the magazine were all pleased with the service they got. This is brilliant news for us, for our readers and for our advertisers. From foot practitioners to chimney sweeps, roofers to plumbers you have used them all. The overwhelming favourite section of the magazines is the free time. Finding out what’s on in your local area. Competitions came a close second and we are working hard to get new ones for you to enter all the time. We were flattered that when we asked you how we could improve the magazine over half said it was fine as it was. We have had some great suggestions for new items and over the next few months we will be working on introducing some of these like the Bonington Theatre listings, a colouring page for kids and more reviews and local areas of interest. One thing was clear from the feedback - you lot like a bargain. You want more vouchers, more discounts and more special deals. We will pass this on to our advertisers so keep your eyes peeled for those offers!! Once again thanks to everyone who completed a form. It really helps us to keep our magazines readable, keepable, loveable and useable. The NG Team

Twin Success by Bob Massey
After the launch of Volume One of my book; Snippets from History, last December, many people have asked when I was going to write Volume Two. Well, I now have completed it and it was launched at the Lowdham Book Festival on the 25th of June. This volume covers not only Arnold and Mapperley but also the local villages, using articles I have written in NG14 magazine. It’s now in the shops so if you want this latest publication or Volume One, MSR News on Front Street, Arnold; The Bookcase, Main Street, Lowdham and Five Leaves Bookshop, Long Row, Nottingham all have copies. Or you can pick a copy up from the NG Magazines office in Arnold. It would not have made it to print if it had not been for the valiant efforts of Ali Wale at NG magazines and Warwick Printing. Very many thanks to both of these. The launch of my second book and the fact that my younger daughter will have just had a baby by the time this is published started me thinking about a story from 1906. Twin girls Ann and Mary were born in Bestwood in 1820 to Frances and John Bennett, a local farmer of some 20 acres. The couple already had a son, John, born in 1816. Twins were unusual at the time and the survival rate of both the mother and children was low. There were no drugs and medical knowledge was limited so the delivery could be difficult and dangerous. In this case however, both children and the mother survived. The girls were christened soon after at St Mary’s, Arnold. The girls survived to adulthood and by 1841 the family had moved to Front Street, Arnold. The twins married two brothers, both on the same day. Ann married John Frost and Mary married his brother Samuel on the 16th May, 1842 at St Mary’s, Arnold.
life in Arnold. Unfortunately Samuel Frost was accidentally killed in June 1856. His widow Mary married again in March 1859, this time to Thomas Sissons, a framework knitter. They lived on Little Lane, off Furlong Street. The girl’s mother Frances died in 1860. The twins brother John had married and had a daughter, Lucy. Lucy had married a local man, Samuel Stones. Samuel and Lucy came to live with their grandfather to look after him in his old age. In a twist of fate, Ann’s husband John Frost was also accidentally killed in 1864. In April 1867 Ann then married John Dennison, a besom (broom) maker and they lived on Calverton Road. By 1906, now aged 86, the two girls were both very active and still living in Arnold. They had now become the oldest living twin girls in the country. Something to be said for the local air perhaps? This came to the notice of the press and was recorded not only in the local papers but also as far away as Aberdeen and Diss in Norfolk. They had remained in the Arnold area all their lives, never even venturing to the coast. Neither of them had ever seen the sea! Unfortunatley Mary, who had been in ill health for a while, died the following year.
Both families then settled down to married I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG5 magazine.

Keep Your Garden Looking Knock Out All Summer
Join me on Facebook
Summer is show time for our gardens. Whether we are entertaining relaxing or playing we want them to be at their best right through till the Pelargoniums first frost. Follow my tips and your garden will reward you with an award winning performance. 1. Edge your lawn. A crisp edge finishes the whole garden off. 2. Use pebbles to cover soil in containers. It gives a real show garden finish, keeps the weeds down and the moisture in. 3. Give plants a thorough drench a couple of times a week. This is way more beneficial then watering little and often. Sunflowers 4. Water at the base of plants so liquid gets straight to the roots. Water on leaves only evaporates in the sun. 5. Remove dead flowers from plants every few days. This encourages new flowers to form and keeps the show going all summer. 6. Keep containers and hanging baskets in peak condition by giving them a liquid feed every week. 7. If you’re off on holiday remove all the flowers from plants before you Sweet Peas leave. By the time you return they will just be bursting into flower again. 8. Stay on top of those show baddies, the weeds. Just a couple of minutes a day should do it. 9. Got a few gaps in your borders? Pop to the garden centre and grab one Geraniums. They of these summer starlets. don't even mind a little shade

Gold Medals for Local Stars Congratulations to local stars Patricia Wetton from Gunthorpe and Mo Proctor from Gedling who recently represented Great Britain at the WPC (World Powerlifting Congress) 2016 European Championships. They were held in June at Sir Stanley Matthews Sports Stadium, Staffordshire University in Stoke on Trent. Both ladies came away with gold medals and set world records in their individual weight and age categories. Patricia and Mo both say they would love to see more women competing in power lifting. It is both an individual and a team sport. On the platform it is all about making new pbs (personal bests) but at the same time, especially at internationals, everyone comes together and the team spirit is amazing, coaching and supporting each other on and off the platform. Patricia and Mo both work in the fitness industry. Patricia teaches classes at Redhill Leisure Centre and if you would like a taste at lifting weights in a group environment then book on to one of her classes. She also does sport and relaxing massage. For a treatment check out her facebook page: Patricia Wetton Personal Trainer and Sports Therapist. Maureen Proctor, as well as teaching classes at Redhill and Carlton Forum, also takes on private clients. For more info search her website www.mtpfitness.co.uk or facebook page: Maureen Proctor Power Lifter/Personal Trainer.

r Review: a W il iv C a eric Captain Am TING!!!! STOP FIGH We’ve had the Son of Krypton Vs the Bat of Gotham. We’ve had the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen Vs the Unstoppable Force that is the Punisher. And we’ve had Deadpool Vs, well, everyone. Now the Marvel Cinematic Universe is being ripped in two as it too sees it’s heroes at each other’s throats, with the formidable Team Ironman facing off against the Righteous Team Cap. Seriously, villains, you might as well just take this year off, recuperate and finally get out of that damn chair Thanos! In Captain America Civil War, the heroes of the MCU that we have all come to love, come under scrutiny by the government. While they have saved a ton of lives; the undeniable catastrophic destruction they constantly leave in their wake is an issue that cannot be ignored anymore. Government’s of the world want to put the Avengers on a leash, making them more responsible for their actions. This new act puts a divide straight down the middle of the Avengers; with Ironman wanting the act to help lessen the destruction caused by his and his team and Cap thinking the governments involvement will hinder their heroic efforts and possibly stop them from saving lives in the future. And so the battle lines are drawn, the MCU is split in two and the two sides are sent on an inevitable collision course as friend is forced to fight friend and a family is ripped apart. This story not only puts every single character of the MCU in interesting and new positions but leaves the whole universe in a state of turmoil that is utterly compelling to watch. For a movie that involves a 16 year old wearing a spider themed onesie, the themes and moral questions raised are explored surprisingly well. Each character was marvellously represented in this movie. The returning cast slip effortlessly back into their roles and even manage to bring their performances up a notch. Robert Downey Jr. turned another great performance as Tony Stark/ Ironman and seeing his pain from past events haunt him through this movie and motivate every single decision was, especially as a long-time fan of this film series, truly satisfying to see.
So the storyline was well done, the characters amazingly well represented, and the comedy skilfully woven in, but what about the war part of Civil War? Well the action of this movie was bonkers. Basically I can’t give this film’s action enough credit. When you make what is probably the best superhero showdown of all time and show me Spider-man swinging about in all that mess being a snarky badass, that’s quite a feather in your cap. So yeah, this movie is unquestionably amazing, fantastic, all the positive adjectives Stan Lee put before his superhero’s comic book title. You can tell that every detail was handled with care and precision; mindful of the MCU’s rich past, but also put it on a very interesting and fresh path. This film is easily the best Marvel has made and I can’t wait to see where our heroes are taken in the future. Captain America Civil War = 10/10 © Sam Burton (aged 19)

Wendie Kirkland competed for Team GB at the World Women's RAW Bench Press Championships in Potchefstroom, South Africa in May. Wendie, 43, is a Service Support Officer for Housing Services. She has been benchpressing for 22 years and trains locally at Redhill Leisure Centre with her dad, who still trains at the age of 73. As a working single mum Wendie can only fit in one training session a week, but that hasn’t held her back. She competed in the 2014 World Masters Women’s Bench Press Championships, 2015 European Masters Women’s Bench Press Championships and can lift up to 75kg (12 stone) unequipped. Wendie raised the funds to pay for her trip by running a raffle at work and received a donation from Gedling Borough Councillors, who donated £200 from the County Councillors funding pot.

ottinghamshire currently sit one from bottom in the Natwest T20 Blast, having won just one game out of their four fixtures. A win over 5th place Lancashire saw the Outlaws win by two wickets and both Lumb and Wessels surpassed the half century mark, whist Samit Patel extracted 2 wickets from his 4 overs. Of course, the biggets fixture coming up in the next month is the East Midlands derby, as Leicestershire travel to Trent Bridge to face the outlaws. The two sides are yet to have played each other, and there is no doubt Notts will be looking to steal the victory from Leicester who are placed above them. Elsewhere in the County Championships, the side have exceeded their T20 form as they lie in 7th above Hampshire and Surrey. Nottingham’s last victory came almost 2 months ago in mid-April, where they clinched 2 points from Surrey, winning by 3 wickets. Consecutive losses against Warwick, Hampshire and Durham have drifted the East Midlands side down to 7th, 19 points off 1st place Lancashire. A duet of successive draws against both Middlesex and Yorkshire meant the side were restricted in just picking up 5 points, compared to 16 that is acquirable after a win. Head coach Mick Newell will be disappointed with his side’s lack of consistency, considering he has a plethora of over 10 international squad members. Samit Patel notches top run rate at this stage, the allrounder managing 585 in just 7 appearances, also executing 5 half-centuries so far this season.. Captain Chris Read has the highest batting average out of his team-mates of 48, whilst 29 year-old Harry Gurney brings up the rear with an average strike rate of just 6 from his 7 matches.
Picture from ESPNCricInfo
Looking ahead, Nottingham come up against top-spot Lancashire on the 3rd July at Trent Bridge. The return fixture at Old Trafford led to an effortless performance from Lancs, who won by a margin of 8 wickets, the majority being taken by Kiwi seamer Neil Wagner, who took 11 wickets overall. Notts are yet to play Somerset and still have two fixtures against Matthew Maynard’s team, the latter being played away from home in Taunton in the final game of the season. Surprisingly, Somerset have won just 1 form 7, with 6 draws to their name, including a tied game with current leaders Lancashire. Overall, a disappointing start to the season for Nottinghamshire, who haven’t managed to replicate their fantastic 3rd place finish from 2015. Although all hope is not lost with their still being 3 months worth of fixtures to play for, and substantial games against leaders Lancs and Hampshire who sit one spot beneath Notts. Upcoming County Championship fixtures: 13th August - Trent Bridge 23rd August - North Marine Road 6th September – Trent Bridge

Better by Nature
Neets
‘Ecotherapy’ is a term used to describe the use of nature based activities to improve mental wellbeing. Activities can include things such as gardening, walking, cycling, nature based arts and crafts, conservation tasks, animal care, bushcraft - anything that involves spending time in and interacting with nature. Activities generally take place in a group setting and can provide a great way of tackling social exclusion and meeting new people.

Heartfelt Thanks To Thousands At Nottinghan Race For Life
Victoria Embankment in Nottingham became a sea of pink when thousands of women joined together at Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life. Over 4,000 mums, grans, daughters, sisters, aunts, workmates and friends united with one mission in mind – to beat cancer sooner. Now organisers of the 5k and 10k events are sending a heart-felt message of thanks to everyone who took part and all their supporters. And they’re asking them to make every step count by paying in their sponsorship money as soon as possible so that it can be used to fund pioneering research. Last year, Race for Life in Nottingham raised an incredible £274282 for Cancer Research UK. This year, the charity hopes the 4,000 who have entered will collectively hit a fundraising target of £245,000.
A growing body of evidence shows that spending time in natural and green spaces can• reduce stress and anxiety • reduce levels of depression • improve physical health • improve mood and self esteem • help to reduce the need for medication • help overcome isolation and social exclusion Although Ecotherapy refers to sessions which are specifically run to benefit wellbeing, this is a side effect of any nature based activity! In many areas there are regular groups and activities run by organisations such as the Wildlife Trust, The Conservation Volunteers, The Waterways Trust and local park rangers. Nature in Mind is a free service provided by Framework housing to provide this type of activity to people in Nottingham who are experiencing mental health difficulties. Activities take place in small supportive groups and include walking in nature, gardening, conservation, wildlife identification, arts and crafts, visits to gardens, farms and nature reserves. New group members are always welcome, as are volunteers. We are also available to give talks and presentations on the benefits of Ecotherapy. More information is available at www.frameworkha.org/natureinmind or by giving us a call on 0115 9709591.

Detoxing: Is juicing the only answer? Juicing has become the latest trend for those wishing to rid their bodies of toxins. “Detoxing” is touted as the newest way to leading a healthier, slimmer life, with companies offering 3 to 7 day juice cleanses and many more selling detox products. Is juicing really that beneficial? Can we detox without it? Before we begin, let’s take a look at what a toxin is: A toxin is a molecule that is capable of inducing disease in the body. Toxins enter the body via the air, food, water and through the skin and exist both indoors and outdoors. In a nutshell, it doesn't matter what you do, you will encounter toxins in your daily life. Luckily, we are equipped to get rid of toxins through a process called detoxification. Detoxification doesn’t just get rid of environmental toxins, it also shimmies out molecules from the body that have served their purpose. For example, those hormones that cause PMT, detoxification gets rid of them. Needless to say, it is a pretty important process. Do you really need a juice detox for this process to take place? The simple answer is: no you don’t, detoxifying is an everyday process. The major advantage of juicing comes
from not ingesting so many chemicals whilst on a juice fast. Think about it. Every meal has been replaced by a juice. You are probably avoiding that toxic artificial sweetener from your afternoon fizzy drink, that preservative laced bread is no longer an issue and your evening take away is non existent. This makes perfect sense for the 3 to 7 day juice cleanse but then you go back to loading up on everything you missed, including those toxins that just happen to be in your comfort foods. If detoxification is truly your mission, that juice cleanse won’t even scratch the surface. Instead of juice cleansing, focus your attention on how you can reduce your toxic load. This means everything that passes your lips, what you breathe in and even what goes on your skin (and yes, there is a good reason hippies don’t wear deodorant). Even more importantly, ensure that your gut and liver function is optimal. Without these organs, getting rid of toxins would be borderline impossible. Here are some tips & tricks to consider:
Avoid Toxins
Get rid of Toxins
• Filter water. • Wash all fruit and vegetables and buy organic where possible. • Ditch anything artificially sweetened. • Avoid sources of food additives. • Reduce your caffeine intake. • Don’t smoke - this one is obvious • Consider how much alcohol you really need. • Unless specifically advised by a doctor, over the counter medications such as ibuprofen, paracetamol, aspirin and the like are best avoided. • Switch to natural personal care products where possible.
• Load up on leafy greens. • Eat lightly cooked brassicas such as broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower and cabbages. These may speed up detoxification. • Include herbs and spices where possible.. • Eat some good quality meat. Protein is essential for detoxification. • Drink plenty of filtered water. • Lose weight. Some toxins accumulate in fat so if you carry excess weight, weight loss is a necessity for detoxification. • Sweat it out. Some detoxification does happen through the skin • Sleep. 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep should be the aim.

SEE THE BABY RHINO AT WEST MIDLAND SAFARI PARK On Good Friday this year, West Midland Safari Park welcomed a tiny baby white rhino calf into the world — the first to be born at the Park in a decade, and we have 5 family passes to give away! Now at three months old, baby Ekozu, is out and about and can be spotted on the four mile safari drive-through. His first day out was nerve wracking for all, but after some gentle coaxing from Mum, six year old Ailsa, the cute youngster was soon seen charging around, enjoying his first steps on the green grass of the four-mile safari. True to white rhino behaviour, Ekozu spent most of his first day out close to his mother, but always moving slightly ahead of her, so she could keep a watchful eye on him whilst she grazed. Deputy Head Keeper of Ungulates, Lisa Watkins said, “After his first three weeks bonding with mum, meeting Ailsa’s best
friend Keyah and getting used to the outdoors in the paddock, it was an exciting day to let Ekozu out into the African Reserve. Ailsa has been an exemplary mum, showing Ekozu around the reserve and keeping him safe by her side. White rhinos can communicate vocally and we could hear Ekozu making lots of cute squeaking sounds. The sounds relate to when he is excited, curious or just calling to Mum.” Southern white rhino face a huge threat in the wild due to habitat loss and more commonly, poaching. At the last count, only around 20,000 wild southern white rhinos remained and in South Africa alone, 1,175 were killed in 2015. Ekozu is the first baby rhino to be born at the at the tourist attraction since his dad Barney, who was born in 2005. He makes up the number of rhinos in the crash to six. Further information is available from the Park’s official website www.wmsp.co.uk or by telephone 01299 402114 You can follow the progress of the baby rhino on the Safari Park’s official Facebook page: http://www.wmsp.co.uk/facebook

The Recovery from Separation & Divorce course gives help and support, as well as practical tools, to get through your relationship breakdown and divorce. It is a safe, non-judgmental environment to meet others who are in the same situation, which allows discussions and questions whilst grappling with important issues. The course has been developed by divorcees with different specialties: a judge, solicitors, communications experts, counsellors, family life experts, and mediation advisers. It has been helping thousands of people recover from relationship breakdown. All the people that run and help with the course have been through divorce and separation themselves and have a passion to help others recover completely from the impact that relationship breakdown brings. Although the RSD course is run in a church building in the city centre, it is specifically designed for people who may not go to church or who do not want to discuss faith issues. The setting is welcoming, relaxed and unthreatening. What others have said after being on this course:“It is a unique course and caters for a group of people that aren’t always thought about or recognised as struggling, addressing singleness and loneliness”. “Made me look at things I was not looking at”. “Talking to others made me realise how much I had hurt my partner”. J M Wills - A Service You Can Trust Making a will is incredibly important for lots of reasons. These are just a few examples of the way a will can help you; it ensures that you have the right person to take control of things; it states who will inherit your assets and property; who will look after your children and it can also help you save on inheritance tax. The legal formalities that surround making a will and planning for the future of your children can often be intimidating, and it may seem like a daunting task; but it doesn’t have to be that way. J M Wills & Legal Services Limited can make the whole process easy and it can be carried out in the comfort of your own home where they can help you make these hard decisions.
“Writing a will is not necessarily straightforward” owner Jan explains, “but that doesn’t mean it has to be difficult for the client! There are a lot of aspects to consider, but we’ll talk these through and I’ll give honest, straightforward advice.” “Everybody’s circumstances are different, and it’s my role to explain how a client’s family and loved ones could be affected in the event of their death. It’s a very sensitive area and people don’t like to talk about it, but we have to face reality. Death is inevitable, and if we plan for it we can avoid leaving loved ones in a mess and ensure our wishes are put in place to avoid them ending up in the hands of the courts”
Will you protect your loved ones? It’s easier than you think. Simply call us on 0115 752 2196 to find out how we can help protect the people you love. enquiries@jmwillsandlegalservices.co.uk | www.jmwillsandlegalservices.co.uk

Vernon Reassures Local People As you will all know, there has been a great deal of political turmoil over recent weeks, following the EU Referendum. However, I would like to reassure you that my team in Arnold continue to work with me to help constituents with their problems – issues with government agencies and departments such as the Department for Work & Pensions, the Child Maintenance Service, the Home Office, the DVLA, and so on. My staff also ensure that the views of constituents are passed on to me with respect to Bills being discussed in parliament and lobbies being organised by campaign groups. This is an important link between all the people of Gedling and Westminster, and I wanted to remind you all that I am always pleased to hear your views and if possible help with problems.
Please contact me by email: vernon.coaker.mp@parliament.uk By post: Arnot Hill House, Arnot Hill Park, Arnold, NG5 6LU Or by phone on 0115 920 4224. My office is normally open from 9.30 to 5 on weekdays, and I hold surgeries most weeks, usually on Fridays. This continues when parliament itself is in recess, such as over the summer, or parties are holding their conferences. Please telephone if you would like an appointment.

The song was performed at the end of the day. Watch this space for our next Be A Gem For A Day workshop. You might like to join us next time. The Gem’s always welcome an audience to any of their practice evenings held on Thursday evening at Harrington Middle school, Derby Road, Long Eaton. Please note that through the school holidays, rehearsals will be at Long Eaton School, Thoresby Road, Long Eaton. For more info on the chorus. Please visit; www.gemconnection.org

I have 40 years experience in banking and finance. If you are looking to review exisiting Investments or Pensions or indeed looking to make new Investments for income/growth or both, I would be happy to help. It is crucial in today’s uncert ain financial climate that you regularly review your financial arrangements. At Tudor Court Financial Planning Ltd, we will arrange regular meetings at your home or our office to ensure that your financial goals are being achieved.
Formerly employed by Lloyds Bank for 32 years I specialise in life and critical illness cover for individuals and businesses. I am able to review existing arrangements and in most cases I am able to save you money and/or increase your level of protection. I am particularly interested in seeing people who have previously purchased Life/Critical Illness protection through banks, who may no longer have local support and who feel they may be paying too much for their cover.

NEW!! Doggy Day Care Centre Now Open Cuddles-A-Plenty is an established and experienced pet sitting business. Originally home based, it has now moved to wonderful new premises in Bulwell with easy access from NG5, NG15 and NG16. The owner, Dionne Bacon, is really excited about this expansion of her very successful business. Dionne believes that your furry friend needs a safe and fun environment to thrive in. In order to achieve this Cuddles-APlenty has lots of smaller enclosures to give it a more homely feel. This unique approach ensures the dogs aren’t overwhelmed. Each group has a dedicated pet sitter and they have plenty of stimulation both indoors and outdoors as well as quiet time for a chill out!
where your dog is cared for as you would care for them. Highly recommended. 5 Stars!!” (Caroline, NG5) “My dog, River has been looked after by Dionne previously in her own home. This week she had her first visit to the play centre and what a wonderful place it is. The staff are delightful and their love of dogs shows in all they do. I would not hesitate to recommend the day care to anyone with a dog.” (Tracey, NG16) “I love going to CuddlesA-Plenty. Dionne really takes care of me and I have made loads of great new friends. It’s like a home from home.” Harry (aged 4)

Cat With Impeccable Manners Seeks Home Being a former stray is no barrier to having impeccable manners as Oscar, rescued by a local charity, proves. Taken in by Animal Accident Rescue Unit, this beautiful blue-eyed boy deserves his own home. He is being fostered for by one of the charity’s volunteers, who says: ‘Oscar’s about five years old, playful and perfect company for my own cat. He’s quite shy, so he’d prefer an adult house, but is gaining confidence.’ As with all the charity’s cats, Oscar is ‘homeready’: having been “snap” FIV/FeLV bloodtested, for which he is clear – wormed, flea-treated, neutered, micro-chipped, litter trained plus vaccinated for a year; his new owner needs to continue his vaccinations. To ask more about Oscar contact the Adoption Officer on 0115-9985063 after 6pm. This number must not be used for any other enquiry type or emergency – or email this volunteer at admin@aaru.org.uk, who will reply as soon as possible. The charity recommends its cats stay indoors for 6-8 weeks, allowing owner and home bonding time, plus kept in at night. All potential adoptions need a successful homecheck, with no rehoming on or near busy roads except for indoor cats. Entirely reliant on volunteers and donations, the charity urgently needs more cat, and occasional dog, fosterers. It does not deal with healthy strays/unwanted pets; but animals and birds needing veterinary help - plus those neglected, injured or vulnerable. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should call, leaving a detailed message, for the telephone operators on 0115-9321555. For details, including animals awaiting homes visit www.animalaccident.org.uk.

Enjoy Festival Season Safely Festival season is here and there are some fantastic events on offer in the region such as Gloworm at Southwell. Festivals can draw huge numbers of people, all converging on a small area to enjoy themselves and have a great time. However, any event that attracts large crowds is also likely to draw a small number who will seek opportunities to commit crime. If you’re heading to a festival this summer, locally or elsewhere, here are a few steps you can take to help ensure thieves don’t ruin your experience. Make sure your day doesn’t end before it’s even begun and keep your festival ticket close to you at all times – everyone knows those things don’t come cheap! It won’t be the first thing on your mind, but when you first get to the festival, try and take a few minutes to figure out how you can report any suspicious behavior or crime. When the sun goes down and the music draws to a close, make sure you stick to a well-lit exit route, ideally with a group of friends.
can impair your judgment and all day drinking mixed with sunshine can not only lead to problems within the festival, it can also affect your health. Keep topped up with water inbetween the beer to make sure you stay hydrated. If you’re lucky enough to be carrying on the enjoyment over a weekend by camping, be aware tents aren’t the most secure places. Maybe you’re not at a festival, just having a family camping trip? Thieves will still be on the lookout. Try and split your cash and cards and use on site lockers where possible. If you must keep items outside your tent, such as bikes and furniture, consider securing them to stable objects, such as a tree. But lastly, please make an effort to take valuables with you when you leave your tent and enjoy!
Having a few drinks in the sun whilst listening to music is many people’s ideal festival day. But remember that alcohol Special Constabulary Recruitment - Are you interested in becoming a Special Constable?
