Grab a Kebab!

Kebabs are easy to prepare, quick to cook and healthy. You can cook them over a bbq, under a grill or using a grill pan on the stove. Skewers can be wooden or metal. Wooden ones need a good soak in water first. Metal skewers can be re-used and also conduct heat, helping to cook meat through.

Spicy Chicken Kebabs

Seafood Kebabs

190g uncooked king prawns 200g scallops - (king are better but I could only get queen) 1 fillet of white fish like monkfish 6 rashers of streaky bacon marinade 2 cloves garlic - finely chopped pinch of chilli powder 2 tbsp olive oil juice of half lemon

450g chicken breast 2 red onions cherry tomatoes marinade 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp red wine vinegar juice of half a lime pinch chilli powder or flakes 2 cloves garlic finely chopped

Cut chicken into chunks. Mix marinade and add to chicken. Cover and leave overnight. Thread chicken, red onion and tomatoes Cut the fillet of white fish and add onto skewers and cook until chicken is cooked through. Make along with the rest of the fish to a bowl. Mix the marinade and add to sure it is thoroughly cooked. the fish. Stir to coat and leave for Halloumi and Veg Kebabs at least an hour. Cut each rasher 200g halloumi cheese Cut the cheese, courgettes, of bacon into 3 strips and use it to 1 or 2 courgettes red onion and yellow pepper wrap around the scallops. Thread 2 red onions into bite size chunks and place the fish onto skewers and bbq cherry tomatoes in a bowl with the tomatoes. until all the fish is cooked through. 2 yellow peppers Mix the marinade ingredients Lovely with couscous. marinade and add to the vegetables. Mix really well and leave for 2 tbsp olive oil as long as possible. Over juice of 1/2 lemon night is good. Thread the veg 1 tsp dried oregano and cheese onto skewers and grill until browned & the veg are cooked.

Fruit Kebabs

pineapple bananas x2 1 x ripe mango strawberries marinade 2 tbsp honey 1 tbsp brown sugar juice of half a lime

Prepare the fruit into bite size chunks and thread onto skewers. If you are cooking on an outdoor bbq it might be an idea to lay the fruit on foil. I used a grill pan and melted some butter on it first. Place the kebabs on the heat and brush with the marinade. Turn and cook until the fruit starts to go brown and caramelise. This should only be a few minutes. Delicious served with ice cream, creme fraiche or chocolate sauce.

Seasonal redundancies can catch workers off guard As the summer season draws to a close many businesses are facing the bleak decision of making redundancies in what will be the lead up to Christmas. Angela Shaw, employment solicitor at Massers Solicitors in Nottingham, is advising workers of the need to understand their rights when an employer starts a redundancy procedure and also for employers to understand their obligations. In my experience there tends to be a rise in redundancies at this time of year and businesses are continuing to look at options for cost cutting and rationalisation. The economic downturn has made redundancy more commonplace but many businesses are still unaware of their obligations during the redundancy process. There must be a genuine reason for the redundancy and a thorough consultation for the purposes of involving all affected employees. The consultation should address why there is a

risk of a redundancy and what could be done to avoid it, for instance, whether there is a suitable alternative position that could be offered even if it is on a fixed trial basis. Where an employer decides that there is a case for redundancy, there will be a right of appeal against that decision. If the decision is upheld, there may be grounds to pursue a complaint of unfair dismissal at an Employment Tribunal in addition to any other relevant claim. An employee who is made redundant could be eligible for a statutory redundancy payment or there may even be a provision for an enhanced payment. In some circumstances, an employee may be asked to enter into a Compromise Agreement. This is a confidential document whereby the employee will forfeit employment rights in return for an ex gratia payment. It will be necessary to seek independent legal advice about the document for which an employer will usually make a contribution towards the costs of that advice.

SKATE PARK Arnold is a great place to live but it could be EVEN better.

As part of the consultation process for the improvements to the King George V Playing Fields you will have the opportunity to view the proposed changes and leave comments feedback forms will be provided which can be completed and returned via post box in the library or directly to Groundwork.

At the moment Arnold is very well served for play areas for young children. However there is very little provision for the hundreds of young people who love to skateboard, scoot, BMX and skate. The only wheeled sport facility is Arnold Bowls â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this is a great facility but it is too small and does not offer enough variety and challenge. At the moment there are plans to improve St Georges Playing Field (see the notice on this page). This would be an ideal location for a skate park due to its central position. If you would like to see a skate park built please let us know. We have a facebook page called:

Swimming News... Acorn Open Meet

On the 13th May the club held its very first Open Meet at Hucknall Leisure Centre in partnership with Mansfield Swimming Club. The event took 10 months to organise and gave swimmers from all over the Midlands the last chance to attain Midland Qualifying Times. As such swimmers from local clubs as well as from Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Doncaster took part in 100m and 200m events. The event was a great success and as such the club plans to repeat and maybe extend the event next year.

Hollygirt School to take boys aged 3 - 7 from September Hollygirt School is pleased to announce that it is welcoming applications for boys aged 3-7 to start from September onwards. It is not the first time that the school has taught boys; there were little boys here during the 1980s. For parents with both boys and girls, there are very few independent co-educational schools with a similar family-feel to Hollygirt and we are aware that for parents of young children, having to do multiple school drop-offs is challenging. Taking boys at a young age will not detract away from Hollygirt’s ethos and they are no plans to extend the age range for boys. Hollygirt helps children develop their individual strengths and abilities, whilst ensuring they are safe, secure and happy. All junior children spend a day with us to find

out if they will be happy in our environment. We take children of all abilities and each is assessed before they join, so that their educational needs can be met, wherever they are in terms of their ability. They all make excellent progress and we are proud of their achievements at whatever level. In our small school everyone knows each other and teachers have the time to get the best from each child. Your child can join Hollygirt at any age, from 3 up to the start of Year 10, subject to a place being available. Entry can be at any time, not just the start of a school year or term. College opens centre in Gedling for young people and job seekers South Nottingham College is opening an assessment and training centre in Arnold to offer support and advice to help young people who have left school or college and those looking to return to work or re-launch their career. The College has teamed up with Gedling Borough Council to bring the centre into the Gedling borough, which has not had any college provision since before 1999. The opening of the centre is the start of a longterm partnership between the College and Gedling Borough Council. In collaboration with the Council, the College is committed to maintaining an educational presence in Gedling. South Nottingham College Principal, Malcolm Cowgill said: "Opening the centre is the first step in the College's long-term commitment to education in Gedling. We are committed to working with the Council to ensure this grows to cater for the demand that is clearly shown in the Borough's youth unemployment figures. It is a great opportunity for the College to be working with Gedling to improve employment prospects for residents in the Borough." It will offer the opportunity for people to drop-in and develop their CVs, review and job-match local vacancies, brush up on interview skills and look at apprenticeships, further education and training or volunteering opportunities. It is anticipated that between 100 and 150 people will be seen each month, for assessments, referrals and training

needs. The College will also be launching work-skills programmes in Business Administration, Health & Social Care, Retail and Automotive through the centre. Local small businesses will be offered the chance to find out about how taking on an apprentice could benefit and grow their business. The College will source and place apprentices and support them during their programme. Operations Manager, Katrina Woodward said: "Using the success of ‘Recruit Local’, our recruitment service, we will be matching local people to local jobs. The Centre will provide a base to support learners to gain training and practical experience for their chosen career path. Local WI Delegates helped fill to the rafters The Royal Albert Hall in London at their annual AGM. And, just like every WI and every WI meeting there was something for everybody: from voting on the resolution calling upon the government to increase and retain midwives, to the amusing talk from Lord Julian Fellowes on his inspiration for his Downtown characters, to the fantastic dancing of Christina Rhianoff and her partner from Strictly Come Dancing. As the National Chair, Ruth Bond said in her address, “The WI means something to every member; and you know, if we just stop to think, it is what we make of it and it is up to us to make it everything we want it to be but, above all- it is there for you – to dip into once a month or to become immersed in some aspects of all that is on offer. But however you might view your individual membership, I do assure you that your WI needs you! Your membership matters. And never think otherwise.” The WI has had an amazing year. Since the last AGM 19,834 new members have joined and 145 new WIs formed. For those wishing to join this throng could do well to look at the WI website www.thewi.org.uk, enter their postcode to find WIs close by. So come on in and give the WI a try.

National Trust Nottingham Centre SUMMER UPDATE The spring and early summer weather this year has been very disappointing, but it hasn’t dampened the enthusiasm of Nottingham Centre members who are enjoying a variety of activities. These include some fascinating excursions to places like the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter, and Back to Back houses. Trips to Crich Tramway Museum, Althorp, and Buckingham Palace are also planned. The Garden Interest Group is thriving, and in July joined forces with the Centre’s Local History Group to tour Hardwick Hall Gardens with a senior gardener, and sample the range of refreshments on offer in the new tea room. Destinations for organised walks include Derbyshire, Canons Ashby, and Bothamsall to Clumber – but a minibus gets you there! The Centre also offers organised holidays. This year members will visit ‘The Best of the West’ in September. From September 2012, ALL winter meetings will be held on Thursdays at the Nottingham Mechanics, North Sherwood Street, Nottingham, The programme opens on September 13th at 2.15pm with a talk by Frank Gibson on National Trust Gardens. On Thursday 27th September Pam Littlewood will give a talk entitled, ‘If Wishes were Horses,’ at 7.30pm. You must be a member of National Trust to join the Nottingham Centre. The annual subscription is £5.00 per person, and £4.00 for each additional member living at the same address. The charge per meeting is £2.00, £3.00 for visitors, who are always welcome. This friendly organisation offers something for everyone, but on outings wear comfy shoes and don’t forget the brolly! New Mayor of Gedling Borough elected

Love plants, want to share your knowledge or learn more? The Nottingham Group of the Hardy Plant Society, an active and enthusiastic group, would love to hear from you. Their passion is the enjoyment of perennial or hardy plants i.e. plants that usually die back over winter and pop back up in spring. A programme of talks by guest speakers runs from October to April on the second Friday of the month in West Bridgford Community Hall. The keynote event on the 9th November, 2012 is an illustrated talk on Transforming your Garden by Bunny Guinness. Bunny is a regular panellist on Gardener’s Question Time, prolific journalist and winner of 6 Gold Medals at Chelsea Flower Show. Tickets now on sale – see website. The Secret Garden, a small walled botanic garden at Wollaton Park, Nottingham has been tended by a group of volunteer members for over 30 years! A special meeting of Gedling Borough Council has elected Councillor Sandra Barnes to the office of Mayor. Councillor Bob Collis was elected Deputy Mayor of the Borough. Councillor Sandra Barnes has been a Gedling Borough Councillor for 12 years, and is married to Councillor Peter Barnes, a member of the council and previous Mayor in 1988 and 1995, who will also act as the Mayor’s Escort. They have a grown-up daughter. Councillor Sandra Barnes and Councillor Peter Barnes are members for Daybrook and as such have strong links with the community and voluntary organisations in the area. Councillor Collis represents the Porchester ward. The Mayor’s aim for this municipal year is to raise £18,000 for the Queens Medical Centre. The money will be used to purchase equipment to assist in the diagnosis of brain tumours in children and young people. As a former Healthcare worker, Councillor Barnes is keen to encourage more awareness of the important work carried out by the hospital.

Soil, especially in raised beds, benefits from being enriched with compost. It contains essential nutrients to help the plants grow. Whilst you can buy ready made compost - making it yourself is cheap and very eco-friendly by reducing the amount of household waste going to landfil. Even the smallest garden can compost. There are loads of different options for composting - however if you have a small garden like mine you are more limited. A great idea is a wormery. Worms eat lots of kitchen waste like used tea bags, vegetable peelings, stale bread and crushed egg shells. They also like shredded paper and small amounts of garden waste. The worms then convert

worms and microbes to do their magic. Although these plastic bins are not very attractive to look at you can screen them using evergreen plants, trellis with a climber growing up it or a willow or bamboo screen. During the spring and summer months we have loads of grass cuttings which are great for the compost bin, however to produce good compost layer with other waste. Grass can compact and fail to rot down if it is piled together in a big heap.

Fundraising groups make an enormous difference locally by helping to raise the vital funds we need so that Marie Curie nurses can continue to provide free care to people with terminal cancer and other illnesses in their own homes. By being part of Marie Curie’s new group, you will help by organising fundraising activities and collections in the local community, encouraging new volunteers to help the charity, as well as supporting Marie Curie’s major fundraising campaigns such as the Great Daffodil Appeal and Blooming Great Tea Party. The Extracare Charitable Trust was established in 1988 and supports over 3,700 older people in 17 housing schemes and 12 villages across the Midlands and the North of England.

Our villages offer a wide range of sociable facilities including restaurants, gyms, greenhouses, gardens and cafes.They form a social hub to bring older people back into the heart of local life. We have over 60 shops nationwide selling furniture, electricals, books, jigsaws, ladies and mens clothes, music and bric-a-brac. I manage the Arnold Extracare shop and we are always looking for donations of any kind and offer a free collection service. We are always looking for volunteers to give us a few hours of their precious time to help with the processing of the donations. Arnold Extracare is a very busy shop with lovely staff and volunteers and very good prices. Choose your personal care assistant with confidence People in Nottinghamshire who need social care and support are being urged to use a directory of reliable paid workers. Support With Confidence, which has been set up by Nottinghamshire County Council, is a web-based directory of potential employees who can help older and disabled people with things like: • getting them out of bed, washed and dressed • taking them out for trips e.g. the pub or theatre • walking people’s dogs • helping out with shopping, housework or the garden. Everyone on the directory has received training and has been checked by the County Council. People who receive a personal budget* for their social care can then select who they want from the directory to provide a particular service. They will then interview that person and, if they are happy, offer them the job. Councillor Kevin Rostance, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, said: “More and more people are now receiving personal budgets, which means they can manage their own social care. This is fantastic and it gives people real choice and control over which

services they have and who helps them. “Support With Confidence gives people the reassurance that these carers are reliable, so we would urge anyone who is thinking of hiring a personal assistant to use this scheme.”

Houses of Parliament Tours I have had the privilege of serving as Member of Parliament for the Gedling constituency since 1997 and I am always pleased to help constituents arrange to visit the Houses of Parliament. I think it is important that this historic building is accessible to all, so if you would like to have a tour, please get in touch. During the summer, there are tickets for tours available to buy. The parliament website has details: www.parliament.uk. Also, if you would like to make your own travel arrangements during other times, I can try to arrange tours of both Houses. I just need as much notice as possible and you may need to be flexible on the time and date. Ring my office if you would like to go along for a visit. Also, every year since I became the Gedling MP, staff in my local office have organised a tour with a coach from either Arnold or Carlton delivering you directly to the Houses of Parliament with a guided tour of the building. I have one organised for Tuesday 25th September leaving Arnold at 8.30 am. There are a small number of places left so if you would like to book, please ring Nottingham 920 4224 as soon as you can. Following a tour of the building you’re encouraged to think of the centre as an extension of your home, a place to find the strength and help you need.

Calmness, clarity and a cup of tea is at the heart of what Maggie’s is all about. Maggie’s Centres are for anyone affected by cancer. They are places where people are welcome whenever they need us – from initial diagnosis or undergoing treatment, to post-treatment, recurrence, end of life or in bereavement. We also welcome family and friends, as they can also be deeply affected by cancer. Every Maggie’s Centre has a kitchen table. A safe place where people can sit and gather their thoughts over a cup of tea, chat to others going through similar experiences or speak to someone who can answer any questions they may have.

Many visitors take advantage of the professional advice on offer from our Cancer Support Specialist or our Benefits Adviser. A varied programme of activities is open to anybody affected by cancer, from yoga, Tai Chi and relaxation, to nutrition courses and hair loss workshops. Paint your home for FREE Gedling residents thinking about a spot of decorating are being offered the chance to paint their homes for free thanks to a paint reuse scheme, which is underway now until October. The monthly events at Calverton Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) provide local community and voluntary groups with free reusable paint donated by the public for the Community RePaint initiative. Over 366 million litres of paint are sold each year, of which 55 million are unused, stored or just thrown away. And rather than surplus paint going down the drain or in to local landfill which are both harmful to the environment, the HWRCs at Calverton take in the paint for reuse. All sorts of paint are available for walls, wood, metal, masonry, etc. The event is open to members of the public from 5.00pm-7.00pm on the following dates: • Thursday 26 July 2012 • Thursday 30 August 2012 • Thursday 27 September 2012 • Thursday 25 October 2012. Residents who would like to pick up some free paint from Calverton need to call 0115 850 5900 to book a time slot. They then simply turn up during their allocated time to choose their paint. Tins of paint are restricted to Nottinghamshire residents only.
