Christmas at the Waggon is Looking Good! It’s never too early to book for Christmas and with such great value there’s no better place than The Waggon & Horses on Mansfield Road in Redhill, Arnold. The Christmas menus are hot off the press and have been eagerly anticipated this year. In the last 12 months there’s been lots of changes at The Waggon and the food offering has gone from strength to strength. The pub is expecting to be busy so early booking is highly recommended. Menus are not only available from the bar but you can see them online by visiting www.pubpeople.com and clicking on the The Waggon’s logo. The menu has been pain-stakingly put together by the Pub People’s catering team and we think it’s the best value three course Christmas Fayre around. Priced at only £15.99 for an adult and £9.99 for a child we think you’ll agree the selection of starters, mains and desserts is amazing! As well as running the Christmas Fayre menu, Manager Lorraine and her team are offering a lunchtime special menu with three courses for a bargain price of only £8.99. The Christmas lunchtime special menu will be available during the same period as the main menu but only available during the afternoon.
4
Lorraine, who’s been manager of the pub for over three years now, says “We appreciate that our main Christmas Fayre menu could be too much for some during the daytime, so we decided to offer a lighter and less intimidating menu for those wishing to dine at lunch.” Bookings for both the Christmas Fayre menus are now being taken and you can find the booking form on the back of the menu. If you fancy winning you and your family Christmas dinner next year, you can enter the pubs competition this Christmas, and have one less thing to worry about next year. To enter simply answer the following question “On the ninth day of Christmas, what did my true love give to me?” Is it A) Lords a-leaping B) Ladies dancing or C) Geese a-laying. All you have to do is email your answer A, B or C to competition@pubpeople.com remembering to leave The Waggon as the email subject. Winners will be notified in the new year and you can enter as many times as you like. You will receive a confirmation email so you know we have received your entry. Good luck and merry Christmas.

Nova at the Chesterfield Canal After enjoying a walk beside the Canal near Chesterfield in September, members of Nova Singles Club decided to explore the more picturesque stretch from Shireoaks to Kiveton. Featuring several bridges and twenty-three locks, some double or triple, this section from Worksop to Kiveton forms part of the award-winning restoration project carried out between 1996 and 2003. Walkers from Shireoaks pass twenty-two of these locks on a delightful gradually-inclined towpath that during the summer months gives us many glimpses of bird life and passing narrowboats on their way down to the Trent near Gainsborough. In mid-October, Nova members led by past chairman and founder-member Brian Cluff, joined the canal near the restored Cinderhill Bridge where the towpath crosses the canal towards the tiny village and marina at Turnerwood. Tea and coffee here at Lily Cottage's snug little conservatory on the outward and return journey were among
the highlights of a sunny day that lit up the autumn colours of the trees along the route.
Nova meets at 8pm every Thursday evening at the Mapperley Plains Social Club, opposite the Treetops - Eating Inn. The club's monthly programme of social events for single, widowed, separated and divorced people includes dining out, concerts, theatre and cinema visits, walking, of course, and many more. Visit the web-site at www. novanottingham.co.uk or phone Chairman Paul Mitton on (0115) 9404147.

Volunteers help maintain Japanese water gardens at Bestwood Country Park
Wesleyan Reform Church Burford St, Arnold
Sat 8 Dec: Christmas Coffee Morning - 10am - 11.30am - with gift stall Sun 16 Dec: Christingle Service - 6pm Sun 23 Dec: Evening Service - 6pm Sun 6 Jan: Family Service - 10.30am
The historic Japanese Water Gardens at Bestwood Country Park have been given a makeover thanks to local volunteers.
The Grand Central Chorus are Toronto bound
Gedling Borough Council’s Park’s Development Team working in partnership with the friends of Bestwood Country Park, the Monday Volunteers and local interested residents helped to tidy up the ornamental gardens and prevent it deteriorating back under brambles and leaf mould. The Japanese water gardens are a historical ornamental area of the park. They were commissioned by the Duke of St Albans family during the early 20th century and were designed using stone, water and Japanese trees and planting.
The Chorus have now had the official invite to represent the British Barbershop Association in the International Competition in Toronto next July, increasing the flurry of activity in trying to organise money raising events. Watch this space....
Bestwood Country Park is owned and maintained by Gedling Borough Council and Nottinghamshire County Council. Cllr Jim Creamer, portfolio holder for environment at Gedling Borough Council said:
To book singers for your special event call Peter on 01530243822 or e-mail: publicity.gcc@gmail. com. Any number of singers can be provided from four to forty. Fees are negotiable and quality is guaranteed.
“The Japanese water gardens are a significant and historical part of Bestwood Country Park. It is really important for us to try to restore them back to its former glory. With the help of volunteers, we can invest time in developing our parks which we want to present as best we can to visitors. If any other business or school would like to help us restore our parks or any community projects, we encourage you to get in touch with us.” If you would like to join The friends of bestwood country park or want to be involved in future volunteer sessions, then please contact Jane Richardson on 0115 901 3963 or e-mail parks@ gedling.gov.uk
14
Sponsorship is also being sought. The Chorus are successful, perform publicly on a regular basis, often for charitable organisations and will be appearing in Canada in the above International competition. Any organisation interested in supporting this registered charity please contact Nelson on 07967091202 or Mitch on 07866519837 or e-mail as above. Rehearsals are every Wednesday evening at 7.15pm in Harrington School, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4BJ. You are welcome to visit whether you are a prospective singer, agent, audience, sponsor or just looking for free entertainment. See the website www.grandcentralchorus.com for further information.

DORKET HEAD LANDFILL ARNOLD Did you know that Arnold has a dysfunctional landfill site as a neighbour? It's been a menace for years now, belching out 'toxic' substances, that residents have no option but to inhale. Residents are woken up in the middle of the night due to 'fumes' invading their bedrooms. They have to tape up their windows and doors to reduce the gas entering their properties. They’re afraid that there may be an explosion, or the ‘fumes’ will ‘poison’ them whilst they sleep. Do you think this is acceptable? Living close to landfill sites has been implicated in an increase in birth defects and some cancers If you smell the odour (and it's difficult to define, but if you are motoring along Mapperley Plains, you will sometimes get a whiff of it – acrid and gassy) then please report it to the Environment Agency. They are the regulators of the site. The phone number is free. Ask for a reference number when you log the call, and write it down in case of further need
0800 80 70 60 There's talk of Nottinghamshire County Council extending Dorket Head Landfill. It's already causing a great deal of physical and psychological stress to many Arnold residents. To extend it would be an absolute nightmare! There’s also talk of re-opening the holes (cells) and adding further waste. This would be worse than anything Arnold has experienced so far We want the site closing down at the end of 2014, completely capping, (covering) and adequate gas extraction wells to minimise the odour Please support your Community, and report the odour to the Environment Agency. Lobby your MP, Vernon Coaker, and your local councillors Thank you.

home & garden GIVE YOUR TURKEY A TREAT AT CHRISTMAS Ovenu, the Nottingham-based professional oven valeting business, is encouraging local people to give their appliances an early Christmas present, with a pre-festive season valet. Ovenu’s professional valeters ensure that ovens operate to their full potential, more efficiently and for longer. It is also important to keep ovens in top condition for health and safety reasons. Spilt oils and cooking fats are two of the main causes of oven fires and an unclean oven can also be a breeding ground for germs.

The Redhill Arch by Bob Massey In the 1800’s the road from Nottingham to Mansfield and Doncaster, now the A60, was a muddy track, large parts of which went through the forest. In winter the road was treacherous with deep ruts and thick mud, making travel both difficult and dangerous. The section through Redhill was the worst part. The approaches to the hill were both steep and very muddy with the red clay from which the area is named. Passengers in coaches had to alight at the foot of the hill and be escorted to the top on foot while the coach with extra horses added, struggled up the slope. In winter this hill could become totally impassable. Six public houses were built at the base of Redhill to accommodate the passengers and provide extra horses and guides.
The original Redhill arch In 1812 at the height of the Napoleonic wars, the framework knitters from the Arnold area were in a desperate state having little work. Materials were difficult to come by due to the war in Europe, especially in Spain, from where most of their basic materials were obtained. The Parish Overseers of the Poor in Arnold had an obligation to support these workers in their time of trouble. Money was very tight all round and even the wealthy were feeling the pinch.
The problems of Redhill and the dire work situation locally, led to an idea that could ease both problems in one go. The answer was to get the framework knitters to dig out Redhill and reduce the height of the slope and pay them in kind with bread and basic food stuffs. The hill was wide and access was required to the farm on the hill, so it was decided to dig out the centre leaving a track up the side (still there today) leading to the farm. In order for access to the farm a bridge over the resulting cutting was needed. Work commenced from both sides of the hill at once. The bridge was built on the top of the hill from which the earth, rock and clay beneath was removed after its construction. The spoil removed during the work was spread along the road so that it flattened the approach raising the level of the road on each side. The result was that houses such as the Guide House at the base of the hill now had steps down to them when before they had been level with the road. All the work was carried out by the unskilled labour of the framework knitters who were not used to this type of manual labour. As a result there were many accidents. The result of their labours was that the road to Mansfield and beyond was now much easier to traverse speeding up the journeys as well as the comfort of the passengers. They no longer had to alight to climb the hill. As you pass up this road today at 40mph spare a thought for these men and women who laboured in the 19th century with only a pick and shovel to make your trip easier.
I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from any one with more details of the above people or information on the various places.Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG5 magazine.

Can You Help? The Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance is YOUR local Air Ambulance Service and needs your help in many different ways to help keep it operational. Our helicopter and crew are on call every single day of the year during daylight hours. We average 4 missions a day attending everything from road traffic accidents, industrial and sporting accidents, serious illnesses and people who are injured in inaccessible places. Each year it costs the LNAA £1.7million to provide this vital, life-saving service and we receive no Government or Lottery funding. We rely on individuals, companies and community groups to help us reach this target. Some of the ways people can help their Air Ambulance Service are: • Donating money • Fundraising on our behalf • Joining our Lottery • Remembering us in their will • Donating their time as a Volunteer Volunteers are needed in our shops in Mapperley, Retford, Stapleford, Sutton in Ashfield and Mansfield Woodhouse to help serve customers, sort stock and window-dress. At events volunteers are needed to help set up our stand, sell LNAA merchandise and run tombolas and other fundraising initiatives. We need volunteer drivers to drive our vans to events and to deliver stock to our shops and we need volunteers at our warehouse to sort stock and donations and people are needed all over the county to attend cheque presentations on our behalf. Volunteering is very rewarding and you will be helping to save lives, will meet lots of people and there are roles to meet most abilities and talents. To find out more have a chat with the Nottinghamshire Volunteer Coordinator Lynn Jones on 0115 941 2255 or email L.Jones@ ambucopter.org.uk.

prostate awareness charity Cllr Patricia Andrews presented a cheque for £10,000 to the NHS Hospitals Trust for the charity Prostate Cancer Awareness and Cure. The money was raised during her year in office as Mayor of Gedling. The cheque was presented to the NHS Hospital Trust at Gedling Borough Council, Civic Centre on Thursday 27 September. The funds were raised through a number of events organised by Cllr Andrews including charity quizzes, micro brewery visits, a fashion show and raffle, cake sales, open garden events and a “wartime past and present” remembrance event.
Be a good neighbour when the snow arrives says County Council With winter just around the corner, Nottinghamshire householders are being urged to be good neighbours and help keep roads, paths and pavements clear if and when the snow arrives. And they are also being asked to check that any elderly or disabled neighbours are all right in the cold weather. Nottinghamshire County Council is encouraging people to play their part in keeping the county on the move by following the Government’s Snow Code -- which gives clear advice on clearing snow and ice safely.
You can find more information on the snow code and other advice for coping with winter weather by visiting www.direct.gov.uk

Reader Questionnaire: RESULTS A MASSIVE THANKS to all of you who took the trouble to fill in your questionnaires. We really do appreciate it. Congratulations to Mr Stevenson who wins a £50 Tesco voucher and to Ms Frankland and Mrs Owens who both win £25 vouchers of their choice. We were overwhelmed by the positive and constructive answers to the questions. Here’s what we found out............
98.6% of you read and keep the magazine
Great news for advertisers and contributors (and us!!!)
The main reasons given for keeping the magazines were to find local businesses, local services and to find out what's going on in the area. You also love your puzzles, competitions and offers so we will try to include as many of these as we possibly can. History was also popular and we would like to thank all our wonderful contributors. Wow - this is great news for us and all the businesses in the mags...from oven cleaners to river cruises, gardeners to fitness classes you love them all!! ...Really good , great rates, well satisfied, super... were all comments you used to describe the service you received.

favourite sections lots of you simply said "All of it". For those that did specify, adverts came top, followed by local news and events. Most of the sections got a mention which is great!
Some we have already taken on board; money off vouchers, more competitions, interviews with local traders Some we are working on right now; bringing back top tips page, restaurant offers Others are all noted and will be considered at a later date. Thanks to all of you who have agreed to help us on an ongoing basis with our spot checking. There's the chance to win a tenner every other month for answering a very quick phone call. If you missed the questionnaire but would like to be on our call list there is still time.

Business Spotlight....
Body Masters Gym Your name: Jay How did you first get into your line of work? I started training when I was 15 years old at Castle Gym in Nottingham but then stopped until I was 29 when I tried several gyms but couldn’t find one with a nice atmosphere. Then I went to Body Masters in 2002. After training there for 2 years my brother phoned me out the blue and told me it was up for sale. At that point I realised that this could be a great opportunity and went for it. I didn’t think I was going to get it but I did. How did you get to where you are now? It’s been hard work and a huge learning curve but I wouldn’t change it for the world. A staff member says “The relationships he has formed with the members and the welcoming atmosphere he has created are a testament to Jay’s friendly helpful personality”. I now have a new venue for combat training called Combat Masters. It has been open since March this year and provides boxing and mixed Martial Arts classes. A new member who used to go to a well known gym, but didn’t get any help and support, tried Combat Masters for two days a week. She then decided to train Mon – Fri doing different classes and has lost a massive 10 stone How have you found advertising in ng magazines? It’s the best thing I’ve ever advertised in. We have had a lot of new customers from placing our advert in the ng5 Arnold. What’s the most embarrassing moment you’ve had whilst at work? Once I was holding the remote for the telly at the gym and Westlife came on. A new lad walked through the door and it looked like I was singing to the telly using the remote!! What did you want to be when you were growing up and would you still like to be that now? When I was 15 my sister went out with a body builder and a few weeks ago the same guy came into the gym and reminded me that I said to him when I grow up I want to own a gym and be like you! I don’t remember saying the second part but I’ve got the gym.

GEM rocket to 3rd place!
Nottingham Centre (National Trust)
Winter Programme
GEM Connection Ladies Barbershop Harmony Chorus prepared for battle of the barbers and how we battled! The Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS) holds a National Convention annually with many choruses taking part each year. Each chorus is marked on their choice of music, presentation and quality of the singing. GEM Connection have practised hard and hope the improvements and new techniques we learnt have shown. GEM performed amazingly in a well fought contest and got a score of 74.9% placing them third. Well done to everyone in the competition As preparation for the Convention, GEM performed at Biddulph Music Festival on 8 October and came away with first place. Again, we hope everyone enjoyed themselves and are proud of their accomplishments. GEM hosted a fantastic festive ladies evening on 12 November with an ever – successful handbag auction and surprise singers! Congratulations to everyone who made it a successful night and thanks to everyone who came. If you would like to be informed of any other events, please contact Flin (details below). On 30 November, GEM’s Charity Concert took place at the Long Eaton Silver Prize Band Club, and with a fabulous attendance and equally fabulous singing, it was a hit! Thank you to everyone who came and took part. The Chorus meets every Thursday from 7:30pm at Harrington Junior School, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4BJ. If you would like to find out more, come along to a rehearsal, become part of the mailing list or book us for an event, please email pro@gemconnection. org or contact Flin Tubby on 07545 316 986. ARNOLD SWIMMING CLUB NEWS
Bethany Archer
Bethany Archer
Age: 15 Sport: Swimming - Racing County: Nottinghamshire How did you first get involved with your sport? I had swimming lessons from age 4 at Arnold Leisure Centre then I joined Arnold SC when I was 7 as my instructor recommended it. Who was the first person to spot your talent? Bill Hopkins saw my potential during training sessions & encouraged me to lead my lane. What is your greatest sporting achievement? Getting into the Nova squad when I was 10 & also becoming Junior Club Captain of Arnold SC. What’s your earliest memory of competing in your sport? The first County Championships I did when I was 9. I swam 3 races and loved the atmosphere so much the following year I competed in 11 races! Who’s your biggest supporter and why? My mum and dad because they always support me and take me to every gala.
Swimming News... Club Championships 2012
In 2012 we saw more of our swimmers in the Club Championships than ever before, with a total of 145 swimmers competing. Swimmers achieved a staggering 594 Personal Best times and 23 Club Records during the four Annual Galas. Club Records were achieved by 5 year old Max Walker, 6 year old Emelia Jamson and Jesse Richards, Sam King, Finlay Hutchinson, Oskar Keeble, Kirsten Gilding, Mitch Jordan, Rohan Watkins and Jorge Phenix-Coyne. A special mention goes to 8 year old Ellie Blakey who broke an amazing nine Club Records. Well done to all the swimmers who competed and to all the volunteers who helped us to support the galas. Please note that this years presentation evening is on Friday 7th December 2012 at Arnold Working Mens Club starting at 7.30pm. Senior Captains, Vice-Captains and Junior Captains for 2012-2013
New Lane Ropes at Arnold Leisure Centre
Nova Development Squad Jack Bannister
Congratulations to Jack Bannister for becoming the first swimmer to join the Development Squad at Nova Centurion having joined Arnold Swimming Club through Club Links, a partnership established 3 years ago between Arnold Swimming Club and Arnold Leisure Centre. Well done Jack and all the best for the future at Nova!
Finally after months of work behind the scenes Arnold LC have taken delivery of brand new anti-wave lane ropes. The replacement of the existing ropes is long overdue and the club would like to give a special thanks to Councillor Marje Paling and other local Councillor’s from St Marys and Bonington wards whose support in terms of funding help has enabled us to reach our target set by Gedling Borough Council to pay for 50% of the lane rope costs.

Exciting research project for families in Nottingham Do you have a child aged 2 years 9 months to 4 years 6 months? Does your child constantly move around, fidget and wriggle, not listen to you or talk too much? Is this behaviour difficult for you to manage at home during meal and play times or watching TV, and when you are out and about, shopping, or visiting? Researchers from the University of Nottingham are inviting local families to take part in an innovative research project with the chance to participate in parenting programmes designed to help you manage your child’s behaviour and improve family life. This will take just 1 to 2 hours each week for a period of 12 weeks.
Our next parenting programmes will begin in January 2013 To find out more and take part in a short interview to see if your family might benefit from participating, contact 07881 280369 or email Elvira.Perez@nottingham.ac.uk To advertise call 07817609444 or email: info@ng5.org.uk

Will fostering be the best job you’ve ever had? Being a foster carer is a career which uniquely combines family life with a skilled profession. More carers are urgently needed locally and across the Midlands and Compass Children’s Services is keen to hear from anyone interested. Compass, a leading independent fostering agency, was judged by Ofsted as ‘Outstanding’ in July 2012. Recruitment officer Sally Deignan, says: “Our carers often tell us they’ve always known they’d like to be a foster carer. Some are inspired by a carer they know or through working in related fields such as teaching. If you think it’s something you could do please get in touch today.” To become a foster family, one adult needs to be a self-employed foster carer (home-based), plus there needs to be a spare bedroom (fully furnished). Foster carers receive between £305.34 and £428.40 per child per week plus training and support. Interested? Call 0800 566 8317 or email recruitment@compasschildren. co.uk www.compasschildren.co.uk

The proposal, by Nottinghamshire-based education experts The Torch Academy Gateway Trust, is intended to provide additional capacity and broaden parental choice in an area of Nottinghamshire where perceived demand for places currently outstrips supply.
“The Nottingham Free School will be a specialist Science and Creative Arts school. We are feeding on Nottingham’s considerable reputation for creativity, as evidenced in plans for the creation of a Creative Quarter, formalised by the current government under new 'City Deals' initiative.” “We invite parents/carers of pupils in Years 4 and 5 to attend a series of public meetings in Arnold, Sherwood and Carrington so that we can share our exciting plans.”
John Tomasevic John Tomasevic, Chief Executive of The Torch Academy Gateway Trust, explains: “Our proposal is designed to complement the existing secondary education infrastructure

The countdown to Christmas is well and truly under way and we have no doubt you will be busy writing your lists for Santa and buying presents for your friends and family. While you are out soaking up the festive atmosphere and spending your hard earned cash please take a moment to think about personal safety and the security of your vehicles and property. Christmas shopping is stressful enough without having to do it all over again because a thief has stolen gifts from your car. Every year, numerous motorists fall victim to this type of crime, whether they are halfway through a shopping trip, dropped their bags off at the car and gone back for round two, or returned home from a shopping trip and not yet unloaded the bags from the car. Don’t learn the hard way – remember to lock all your car doors, make sure windows are closed and under no circumstances leave items on display when your car is unattended. In the coming weeks you may well be out in town, at a Christmas party, or toasting the festive season with your friends and family. We want you to enjoy yourself but remain safe, so we would ask you to plan your night out, drink responsibly, and don't leave your drinks unattended.
For most people, Christmas is a time for fun and general merriment with the family, but for the same reasons it can also be quite a stressful occasion. If you feel the atmosphere getting heated, and it’s not the dinner in the oven, take some time out. Make a snowman in the garden, or if it’s not a white Christmas, play with all your new gadgets and gismos. While we want everyone to have an enjoyable and safe festive period, we will take robust action to remove anyone from the street who is engaging in inappropriate or violent behaviour. No one wants to spend Christmas in police custody with the knowledge that your family and friends are celebrating without you. Make sure you are kept up to date with what is happening in the area next year by signing up to Nottinghamshire Police’s Neighbourhood Alert system. This is an automated service that sends out free updates about local crime trends and incidents by email and text. It is a great way to be kept in the loop and I would encourage everyone to sign up by visiting www.neighbourhoodalert.co.uk.

business, IT & finance Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest – the next chapter: Plans for new £13m visitor attraction announced
Tel: 0115-911 7516 Mob: 07944-072743 email: c.hill15@ntlworld.com
A £13m investment plan to create a world class Robin Hood experience and protect historic Sherwood Forest will provide a major boost for the local economy, says Nottinghamshire County Council. Around 100 people could be employed through plans for a new Sherwood Forest Visitor attraction which will also generate huge visitor spend for the local economy and vital investment for the Forest itself. The first phase of the project which includes a brand new visitor centre, café and shop to replace the existing facilities will open in summer 2014 and the new Discover Robin Hood attraction will welcome its first visitors in spring 2015. The Discover Robin Hood proposal promises: • A world-class visitor attraction to promote the legend, life and times of Robin Hood and his band of merry men • Interactive, futuristic tourist features amid the settings of a medieval castle complete with fortified ramparts made from local materials • Free access to a courtyard offering a taster of medieval activities and a gateway to Sherwood Forest which retains its free public access • Comprehensive plans to promote the natural habitats and natural history of Sherwood Forest – led by the existing county council ranger team. Celia Brooks, Chairman of Edwinstowe Parish Council said: “We welcome investment plans at Sherwood which promote the area, but at the same time protect the forest and are sympathetic to the local environment, as well as anything which can benefit the village of Edwinstowe.”

Arnold Local Area Forum is a partnership of local authorities, community groups, agencies and organisations operating in the Arnold area. A very warm welcome to our winter edition of the newsletter that brings you news of what ALAF members have been up to and look forward to 2013. I very much hope that you all enjoyed the late autumn activities of Halloween and Guy Fawkes Night. I know that these activities are becoming increasingly popular amongst young people but hope that minimal distress was caused to the elderly and the noise levels were not too high for our pets! We can all now look forward to the festive season. Wow, it’s nearly 2013, where did 2012 go? The ALAF and its members have been busy providing a wide range of activities and are already planning to bring you exciting events in 2013. It seems appropriate here to remind everyone that the ALAF is a partnership of people living or working in Arnold and are committed to improving the town centre and its surrounding area. The ALAF includes representatives from different agencies and organisations and has gone from strength to strength mainly through the work undertaken by members.

I want to encourage all of you to have your say on what community activities you like and also to be more involved in local issues such as commenting on redevelopments, transport improvements and police initiatives. In order to achieve this, please contact me or any of the ALAF members or if you have a few hours to spare a month then why not become a member of a local group. All local groups are eligible to join the ALAF and access some funding to support their initiatives. I would also like to thank Councillors Ged Clarke and Mel Shepherd who, like me, have contributed funds from the Nottinghamshire Divisional allocations to the ALAF. Finally, I wish you all, on behalf of the ALAF the very best wishes for Christmas and May the New Year bring you Good Health, Wealth and Prosperity.
Carol Pepper, Chairman ALAF
Arrangements are well ahead for the forthcoming New Year and we have some very promising talks and events planned for you. We have had a very interesting year in 2012 with some exceptionally good speakers and the various other programmes and films which have been well attended. Our last offering for the year will be held at Bonington House, Arnold on Tuesday 30th November 2012 when Andy McKinnon will tell us of 'The History of Bestwood'. There will NOT be a meeting in December. On Tuesday 15th January 2013, Peter Castle will talk on 'The Folklore of Nottingham'
All meetings are held at Bonington House (the Labour Club) High Street, Arnold, at 7pm. The car park at the rear of the Clinic is very restricted at present due to building work but there is ample parking further up High Street next to rear entrance of ASDA The Committee of the Arnold Local History Club would like to wish a wonderful and Merry Christmas and a successful and Peaceful 2013 to all our members and friends. For further information please contact John Ward 0115 926 5627

Arnold In Bloom Arnold in Bloom held their presentation in October at the Arnold Labour Club.It was a great night, enjoyed by everyone. Special mention to Shirley Maddock who produced a superb buffet. There was concern that there would be little interest this year due to the dreadful weather, however being true Brits, the people of Arnold refused to let the weather get the better of them. Judging was difficult due to the high standard of entries. Here are the winners: Residential Gardens: Gold - Margaret & Frank Casterton Joint Silver - Margaret Alpin & Sandra & Fred Kerr Joint Bronze - Ruth & Terry Guyler and Helen & John Buxton Residential Homes: Gold - Tavilfield Court Silver - Seagrave Court
Bronze - Ernhale Court Schools - Flower Section Gold - Pinewood Infants Silver - Arnold View Primary Schools - Fruit & Veg Gold - Arnold Mill Primary Sliver - Arnold View Primary Arnold in Bloom would like to thank everyone who joined in this years competition. Thanks to three local councillors who presented the group with a cheque to enable the competition to continue next year. Thanks also to our MP, Vernon Coaker who presented the certificates, to all those who donated raffle prizes and to Kieran Limb who produced a film of the entrants gardens. The committee of Arnold in Bloom would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year and here’s hoping in 2013 the sun will have his hat on!!!
Arnold U3A Do you live in or near Arnold, Nottingham? Are you an older person who isn’t in full-time work? If so, U3A could be for you. 'U3A' stands for 'The University of The Third Age'. It's not a university in the usual sense. Instead, it consists of self-help, self-managed, lifelong learning co-operatives all over the UK. Each local U3A is a charity in its own right, run entirely by volunteers. Arnold U3A serves the northern fringe of Nottingham. Yes we learn, but we're more interested in having fun than gaining qualifications. The real life of U3A is in the interest groups, which meet throughout the month in different places. Groups are very informal, not at all scary. Once a member, you can join as many groups as you like. There’s a lot happening, at different times on various days, so there’s a good chance you’ll
find something interesting that fits your diary. You’re welcome to just turn up at a main meeting or a new/prospective members’ meeting. You’ll get a friendly reception, whichever route you choose. The main U3A meetings, usually with a speaker, are held at Arnold Methodist Church, 1.45-3.45pm on the first Tuesday of most months. The next meeting is Tuesday 8 January. The building is on the corner of Front Street and Worrall Avenue. New/prospective members’ meetings are at the Friar Tuck pub (behind Arnold market), monthly on Fridays at 11.15am. (Existing members are welcome too.) The next meeting will be on 18 January 2013. Come along for a coffee and further information. Check out www.arnoldu3a.org.uk website for further details.
ARNOLD KILLISICK RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION Just a quick update to let you know what's happening in our area. Firstly, we really would like some new members to join us. We are a small, friendly group and we get together every 6 weeks for meetings. The meetings only last for about an hour and a half. Our next meeting is at the Beacon Baptiste Hall on January 8th 2013 and you can be sure of a warm welcome should you decide to join us. We would like to promote the work of Groundwork who run a youth activity evening every Wednesday
in the Killisick Community Centre 7.30-9.00pm. Charles and Rudi look forward to welcoming you if you are 11 years of age and over. If you would like to find out more please contact Groundwork on 0115 9788212. Finally, we are planning our next Fun Day that will be fun packed with activities for everyone. This will take place on Saturday 29th June 2013 – so get the date in your diary now!

Nottingham Postcard Club. As another year draws to a close we look back on the sad loss of two of our members who brought their interests and humour to our now quite small club. After 31 years we need an injection of new members whatever their interests and everyone is welcome to come and visit us. Give me a ring first if there is anything I can help you with, don't be shy! November saw our visit to the Nottingham Archives and Annual Dinner at the Westminster Hotel and on the 11th December we have an open club night, just the right occasion to come and visit us. We start the New Year with a visit from Stephen Flinders on 8th January 2013, who will give us a talk on 'Owd Ilson' (Old Ilkeston for the posh people) We meet in the Meeting Room at Arnold Library (entry via the Leisure Centre) on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.45pm. Until then may we wish you all A Very Merry Christmas and A Peaceful and Happy New Year Should you require any further information please ring John Ward on 0115 926 5627.
Work clubs give people the chance to meet others looking for work, build new contacts, share job hunting experiences and get advice on job search, job applications, interview techniques, CV’s , volunteering and training opportunities. Themed sessions and guest speakers have also been introduced, which include local employers, healthy living advice, local training and support provision, confidence building workshops. The Work Clubs are led by key volunteers some of whom are looking for work themselves whilst others have an interest in employment and skills but are not looking for work. Each work club needs a couple of volunteers with others waiting in the wings. We have training available for volunteers so they can develop their skills and confidence levels. Everyone is welcome to attend the Work Club, no appointment is necessary, just turn up. £1.1 million promised to upgrade Arnold facilities Leisure facilities in Arnold are to receive a big financial boost it was announced at the beginning of November by Gedling Borough Council. Council Leader, Councillor John Clarke, revealed plans for an investment of £1.1 million in popular leisure facilities the Bonington Theatre and Arnold Leisure Centre. The Bonington Theatre is set to benefit from £250,000 of investment which is likely to be spent on new seating and lighting and sound equipment and improvements to the dressing rooms and bar area. Arnold Leisure Centre will receive a pot of £400,000 to be spent on improvements to its swimming changing rooms and pool hall, plus work to improve the outside of the building and possibly an extension to the reception area. There is also potential for a further £200,000 of funding which will be spent on making the poolside

changing rooms more family friendly and better laid out as the council has submitted an application for Sport England Improvement funding. However, it won’t be known if this bid has been successful for several months. The Council has worked closely with valued users of these facilities, including the Bonington Forum and the Arnold Swimming Club, to identify priority areas for this funding to be spent on. Alongside this, the council has already spent £450,000 of Growth Point funding to buy the land of the former Druid’s Tavern pub, just opposite the leisure centre site. By the end of March 2013, this will be turned into an additional 100 space ‘green’ shoppers’ car park, incorporating storage for bikes, motorcycles, and a solar powered ticket machine.

Vernon Coaker MP As I write this column in November, I have just heard the news that the Post Office have retained their contract to deliver DVLA services, such as renewing your car tax. The government have agreed to renew the contract, following a very well supported campaign by local people. There was huge concern that the post offices at Worrall Avenue in Arnold, Mapperley Top and Porchester Road, as well as others, would have this business taken away and their future viability would be threatened. I passed on my constituents’ concerns to the government and I am delighted that, on this occasion, they have listened to the voice of the people. As well as being the right thing, this also shows the power of local campaigns. Users of post offices are very supportive of
the services they receive locally and recognised the threat removing DVLA services posed. All working together, we made sure their voices were heard. I am trying to do this on a number of other local issues as well. If you have an issue you want me to take up, contact my constituency office at 2A Parkyn Road, Daybrook, NG5 6BG. Office hours are normally 9.30 – 5, Monday to Friday. Over the Christmas break, my constituency office will be closed from 21st December to 2nd January. Messages can be left on 0115 920 4224 or on my email: vernon. coaker.mp@parliament.uk It only remains for me to send my best wishes for the festive season to all the readers of NG5. I hope you all have a lovely Christmas and a peaceful new year.

I
Hello Ladies, I hope that you’re all well and have managed to enjoy our English summer months! (Short but sweet) Well, now it’s time to do some REAL shopping because if there’s one thing that we can be sure of, it’s that you’ll get plenty of wear from your Autumn/Winter wardrobe! So what is on trend for the coming months? Lots of Blues.... Navy blue, Royal blue all shades of blue. I think blue is quite a neglected colour - it’s not been a fashionable colour for a long time but is actually as versatile as black. Navy mixes and matches with most colours, it looks great with winter white, reds and even all the taupe, rusty colours that are also very popular this season. Textures.... a must have is leather/ leatherette teamed with tweeds, angora, cashmere or any great wool textures. I wasn’t quite sure how this look would go in Boutique 11 so I just bought a little taste of it .... I’ve already sold out and re-stocked; jeggings, trousers skirts and tunic dresses in leatherette! I can hear some of you out there already saying...”I’m far too old for that look”. Please let me stress once again ... it’s not what you wear but how you wear it and what you team it with!!!! A perfectly fitting leather/ leatherette tunic or skirt looks fantastic teamed with a lovely mohair sweater or good quality long sleeved t-shirt, a great scarf and some lovely warm 80 denier coloured tights this is a fabulous look on most ladies!
For the not so daring .... A great pair of quality jeggings teamed with a wow factor long sparkly chunky sweater, some flat loafers/brogues or boots and you will be right on trend. Long/short pretty much any length waistcoats or gillet are also in fashion, maybe with a little fur (not real) or leather trim. I personally love sleeveless jackets as they’re still really warm but don’t make you feel restricted. A note for my existing customers (and you know who you are) ... I’m trying REALLY hard to get some furry, fingerless gloves again this year as I couldn’t get enough of them last year! Also the fur boot cuffs which pop around the top of any boot to TOTALLY change the look and give the impression that you’ve spent a fortune on a new pair of trendy boots. Boots are coming in all different shapes, lengths and heel sizes - everything from beautiful flat riding boots to black patent dress boots, to stressed looking cowboy boots to bright red with lots of fur ski boots (in store now). For those of you that haven’t yet made it up to the Boutique 11 please come along and take a look, you’ll find a great variety of sizes and prices for ALL ages. I really mean that! My customers are daughters, mothers and grandmothers all going out with lovely, lovely clothes that they not only feel trendy in but suit their age and size! Hopefully see you soon. Happy shopping and be safe in those coming winter months Penny x Boutique 11 0115 960 2006

Arnold Art Society chairman John Williams. A packed programme of activities organised by the French town included visits to other towns, including Strasbourg and Metz, art galleries, museums, castles, and factories producing ceramics and glassware. The generous hospitality and geniality of the hosts was beyond belief whilst the social gatherings enabled everyone to have a go communicating their respective languages with the wine tastings smoothing the flow of the ‘franglais’. The visit proved to be a huge success with the cementing of new friendships and a strong desire by all for a future revisit to Gedling to be arranged.
Autumn Exhibition and Craft Fair
The autumn exhibition was held during the week - end of Sat/Sun 20-21st October at the Pondhills Community Centre. More than 500 members of the public visited the exhibition during the two days with the Deputy Mayor Councillor Bob Collis and his wife visiting the exhibition on the Sunday.
A Lifeline for Animals in Need
Volunteer Drivers and Phone Operators Needed! Local Nottingham-based charity Animal Accident Rescue Unit is seeking volunteer drivers with their own car who have a couple of hours a week to spare during the daytime, evening or weekend. The charity needs help to transport rescued animals to and from vet practices and foster homes. Additionally, reliable people are needed to take calls from the public who require help with animals they find in distress. All roles are based from home. To learn more on how you can make a difference to vulnerable animals, please ring the Recruitment Officer on 0115-956 3799 (recruitment calls only).

Animal Accident Rescue Unit is a transport service for sick, injured or vulnerable animals and birds. It provides both transport to a vet surgery, arranging for their treatment and caring for them in foster homes until either their owner can be traced or new homes can be found. The Charity has no central base and is run entirely by volunteers working from their own homes. It has taken in so many cats over the last few months, it desperately needs new fosterers who can provide a temporary home for one of our rescued cats. If you think you can help, please ring the Recruitment Officer on 0115-956 3799 (recruitment calls only). Animal Accident Rescue Unit lifeline telephone number for dealing with animals in distress is 0115-932 1555. For non-urgent queries and information, email us at admin@ aaru.org.uk, visit www.animalaccident.org. uk, or by post to PO Box 5414, Burton Joyce, Nottingham NG14 5DT.
