Christmas Classics Snowy Christmas Log

This easy Christmas cake is based on a recipe from my friend Dena. It is easy and delicious. 40 ginger biscuits 600ml whipping cream 2 tbsp icing sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract sherry or orange juice decorations rectangular serving plate

Method

Whip the cream with the icing sugar and vanilla essence until it is just holding it’s shape. Dip each biscuit in either sherry, orange juice or the tipple of your choice! Just a quick dunk - you don’t want them soggy. Then spread with a teaspoon of cream and sandwich together. You want two rows of 20 biscuits. Then cover the whole lot with the rest of the cream. Use a fork to make the bark pattern then refrigerate overnight if possible. Before serving decorate as you please - I used silver balls and glitter sprinkles.

Granny Annies Trifle

small swiss roll - sliced sherry for soaking sponge 150g fresh raspberries 110g tin raspberries in juice 300ml whipping cream 2 tbsp custard powder 1 egg 1pt milk 1 tbsp sugar grated chocolate for decorating glass trifle bowl Method

Place sponge slices on bottom of bowl and pour sherry over. Put fresh raspberries on top along with tinned raspberries and 2 tbsp of juice from tin. To make custard whisk egg with custard powder and sugar in a bowl. Heat milk in a pan til warm but not boiling. Add custard powder mixture to pan and heat, stirring until it thickens. Allow to cool - sprinke top with caster sugar to prevent a skin forming. When cool spoon over fruit. Whip cream and spoon over custard. Decorate with grated chocolate.

Mince Pies

These are quick and easy - you could leave out the lard and use just butter or marg. 225g plain flour pinch of salt 50g lard 50g butter 410g jar mince meat splash of brandy (optional) icing sugar for decorating

Method

Heat oven to 200°C. Grease a tart baking tin. Add flour and salt to the bowl of a food processor. Cut the fat into small chunks and add to the processor. Pulse until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs. Switch the processor to continuouslly on and a tbsp at a time add about 4tbsp ice cold water until you have a smooth dough. Roll out on a flat, floured surface. Using a 3” cutter make 12 x circles and place in the baking tin. Tip the mince meat into a bowl and mix in the brandy if using. Spoon into the pies. Using a 2.5” cutter make 12 x lids. Brush edges with milk and place on top of pies. Brush tops with milk and bake in oven for 20 mins or until golden brown. Dust with icing sugar. If you have any pastry left, repeat. Makes between 12 and 20 pies depending on how thin you roll your pastry and how big your tin is.

Schemes are launched to bring empty properties back into use Two new schemes to encourage owners of empty properties to bring them back into use are being launched by Gedling Borough Council and Gedling Homes. The council is launching a new Empty Property Matchmaker page on its website to give owners of empty homes an opportunity to advertise the property for free to potential investors who can offer to either buy the house outright or provide financial investment to bring it back into use. Gedling Homes has secured funding from the Homes and Communities Agency to bring a number of empty homes back into use. The Empty Homes Programme allows them to lease properties that have been left empty for more than 6 months, and to act as landlord on behalf of the owner. Gedling Homes will undertake work to make the properties lettable, find tenants, and the owner is not required to do anything. Owners will receive a guaranteed rental income for the term of the lease. Councillor John Clarke, Leader of Gedling Borough Council said; “We don’t want to see properties lying empty when we have so many people looking for somewhere to live. Along with Gedling Homes, we want to get empty houses back into use and turn them back into homes.” If people would like to join the Gedling Borough Council matchmaker scheme they can visit www.gedling.gov.uk/emptyhomes or to join the Gedling Homes programme they can email Jason.cannon@gedlinghomes. co.uk

THE BEST OF ITALIAN TILE COLLECTIONS FOR 2014 EMC Tiles are delighted to give you a preview of the latest in tile fashion, fresh from Italy. Our team recently visited the country - home of designer ceramic tiles - in order to catch up on the current trends to enable us to quickly bring them to our customers back in the UK.

For a natural rustic or modern feel, the ‘Nature’ range mimics real wood in a selection of six colours: almond, beige, grey, dark grey, brown and white. Each tile is plank shaped with a ‘grain’ to ensure you get a realistic effect but offers the durability and practicality of a ceramic tile.

One notable innovation is new, larger tile sizes up to 90cm square from Manufacturer Ceramica Imola allowing you to cover large spaces quickly and stylishly.

And, for those who’d love a natural stone look but without the price tag, you’ll find two new ranges at EMC, based on the characteristics of real stone and suitable for indoor or outdoor use. Combining beauty and warmth with great performance, ‘Pietre d’Italia’ and ‘Opificio delle pietre’ are available in modular sizes and a number of colours. Their light reflecting qualities really make a statement and give you great freedom to create a unique display in virtually any setting.

Next is Imola’s highly adaptable ‘Creative Concrete’ range. Manufactured from porcelain, it mixes square and rectangular tiles with varying tones to provide a calm, neutral atmosphere. Suitable for floors and walls in a number of grey and white shades, ‘Creative Concrete’ also incorporates Art Nouveau style decorative tiles with embossed designs, and fresco style trims that add immediate texture and interest. ew ns y N sig pla e s D Di n O

For the latest in choice, value and quality direct from Italy, visit EMC Tiles showrooms in Loughborough or Nottingham or go to www.emctiles.co.uk.

Inspector Andy Knight talks.... Now the nights are drawing in and we are experiencing the darkest evenings of the year it is important to take preventative steps to reduce the chance of becoming a victim of crime. These are simple precautions we can all take. Garages and sheds • Keep your garage door open ONLY for as long as is necessary. • Security mark ALL valuables stored in your shed and garage. • Large expensive equipment, like lawn mowers, should be fastened to something bulky. Alternatively, fit anchor posts attached to the floor to provide a fixed point for locking your belongings to. Vehicles • Don’t leave vehicle windows open while they are unattended. • When leaving your vehicle make sure there is nothing on show. • Lock ALL windows and doors, and activate an immobiliser. At home • Use strong locks on all external doors and easy to reach windows. • Don’t hang keys where they could easily be reached through a letterbox or window and never leave them on a sideboard where they are visible. • Keep valuable items away from windows where they could be seen by passers-by. • Close the curtains when it becomes dark to prevent people looking into your property. • Think about using timer switches so that your property is lit inside at various times especially with the darker nights. Yourself • Make sure when using cash points you keep your PIN secure at all times and be aware of others around you. • Be mindful of your surroundings when using your mobile phone. • Keep personal bags secured at all times.

Please contact a member of the team to see if SMARTWATER is available to you. This is a product designed to deter thieves, and in the event of a theft, assist recovered property in being re united with its owners. You can also register on Immobilise for free. To speak to our Pre Crime Unit about protecting your property and reducing your chances of becoming a victim of crime, call 101 ext. 800 3011 or email pre.crime@ nottinghamshire.pnn.police.uk Become part of your neighbourhood watch and work with the local residents association. If there isn’t one where you live, then contact us and we can help establish one with you. If you have any issues or see something suspicious we advise you to contact us on 101. Or if you want to remain anonymous you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. There is some really useful crime prevention advice on the Notts Police website:www.nottinghamshire. police.uk in the section entitled ‘ADVICE’. Please take time to visit the site and see the simple steps you can take to reduce the chance of becoming a victim of crime. I am really keen that we listen to concerns from our community and welcome contact with the team or myself. If you are unable to access the internet and would like any crime prevention material or details of engagement opportunities please make contact with us and we can arrange to get the details to you.

Poor Self Esteem.. Lacking Self Belief.. Worn-out with Problems…….

Sometimes, problems come and go. If we have strong personal foundations, and are resourced enough, we are more likely to move on quickly. David Stringer, from Arnold, is overwhelmed by the praise he has received for his new book ‘The Insect Hotel’. The book takes young readers on an adventure with Dad and Harry as they build an insect hotel in the garden and meet all of the wonderful bugs taking up residence. With a glowing foreword by Bill Oddie, the book is set to enthrall young readers everywhere. A book you and your young ones will love and share together. “I’ve had parents from around the country write to me and thank me for writing the book. It appears that it has really caught the attention of their young and makes the perfect bedtime story!” says David. The most unlikely yet highly-acclaimed praise came from none other than Bill Oddie. After sending off a request for a foreword, Stringer was thrilled when Oddie sent back a glowing review. Within it, he said, “What I immediately took to was the writing. The words, the language, the dialogue. Unlike many children’s books about wildlife –and there are many – it is not patronising or over simplistic. The text is instantly – and I can’t think of a more appropriate word – ‘natural’. I confidently predict that you will enjoy reading The Insect Hotel, and if you think ‘I could do better than this’, I bet you can’t. If you can, find a publisher!” ‘The Insect Hotel’ is available now in either kindle version or app: http://amzn. to/1ixlNFQ. For more information, visit the book’s official website: http://theinsecthotel.com.

Ella’s Teen Talk: New Year’s Resolutions a good thing?....

New year is always an exciting time where you can look back on the past year with pride, memories Ella Higginbotham aged 15 and, in my case, relief that I can move on from last year’s me and hopefully grow into someone with a better hairstyle or more grown up persona. However, setting a new year’s resolution? What is the point? You never hear people three months down the line giving an update of their resolution; in fact it’s a surprise if they can even remember what it was in the first place. I believe it is just something we feel like we should take part in; there is really no gain from it except trying to seem more committed than friends and family who are equally determined to stick to their resolutions! So be careful, there is always that one competitive member of the family that will gloat about how they’ve lost 5 pounds with their new lifestyle or giving up alcohol for the month (I mean, does anyone really care?!) However, if your dad or mum own a gym then I bet you love the new year, you think new year’s resolutions are a gift from the gods because your parents will be raking the money in! If over 50% of members actually get their money’s worth from going to the gym then it will be a miracle. So some new year’s resolutions really just cause unneeded financial problems, why do adults spend money on silly promises when they could buy their lovely teenage ‘children’ new things?! That would be much more beneficial for everyone! If we, as teenagers, are the ones making the resolutions then we are always much more realistic than our parents. Most of us will simply aim to go to more parties and socialise and have a fun year; this is a much better idea than trying to be sensible by dieting or setting life goals as it is a lot more achievable! But whether you’re an adult or a teenager, if you Next have your heart set on a resolution and you are ready to be fully committed issue: then I say this; why wait for a new year to set yourself a target to do something? If you want to do something Getting the then just do it, no excuses. If you are that determined then surely you would most from like a head start…

Things are looking up for the Eagles

Guiding Awards for Local Leaders and Volunteers

Arnold Town’s young side are sitting pretty at the top of the EMCL Prem Division after a string of outstanding results. Unbeaten on the road and with only two league defeats all season things are certainly looking up for the Eagles as we near the half-way point. The Managers keen approach to youth saw 16 year old Daniel Chadwick (pictured) come off the bench to score in the recent 8-2 win over Barrow Town after playing his first full game the previous week in the win at Holwell Sports. Guide leaders and volunteers from Daybrook were amongst those honoured at a special Awards Afternoon held by Girlguiding Nottinghamshire in September. The event marked the hard work and dedication of some 60 members of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire and included long-service awards to 15 women who have devoted a combined total of over 530 years to Guiding. In addition to the awards marking 30, 40 and 50 years of service, the afternoon saw presentations of Oak Leaf awards to six Guiders and the Nottinghamshire Star to 12 non-uniformed volunteers, together with nine Queen’s Guide Awards and eight special ‘Thanks’ badges given by County Commissioner Kate Royse as a personal gesture of appreciation. Entertainment for the award winners and their guests was provided by girls from 1st Daybrook Brownies. ‘We all enjoyed a lovely afternoon of celebration,’ says Kate Royse, who presented the awards. ‘Girlguiding Nottinghamshire is proud to acknowledge the service and achievements of its members, especially those who keep on Guiding under difficult circumstances. The commitment shown by our leaders and volunteers ensures that Guiding continues to provide opportunities for girls and young women across Notts to have fun and to develop their full potential in a safe, girl-only space.’ Enquiries about membership, volunteering and ways of working within the wider community are always welcome: contact county headquarters on 0115 987 7220 or e-mail secretary@ girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk

ARNOLD SWIMMING CLUB NEWS

Philip Isherwood

Philip Isherwood

Age: 16 Sport: Swimming - Racing County: Nottinghamshire How did you first get involved with your sport?

I had swimming lessons at Hucknall Leisure Centre when I was little, where I got all of my badges.

Who was the first person to spot your talent?

My swimming teacher, Helen, said I should join a swimming club and so I joined Hucknall Falcons. After about 6 months I trialled for Arnold and have been swimming here ever since.

What is your greatest sporting achievement?

It was great when I was awarded the Senior Stylist of the year in the 2011-12 season and I have also held a couple of club records.

Swimming News... Club Championships 2013

This year we had a total of 137 swimmers competing, they collectively achieved a staggering 594 Personal Best times (amazingly identical to 2012) and 19 Club Records during the four Annual Galas. Club Records were achieved by Luca Startin, Emilia Jamson, Joseph and Ellie Blakey, Henry Osborne, Thomas White, Hannah Drewett, Charly Neilson, and Jorge Phenix-Coyne. During the Annual galas a total of 90925m was swum excluding the Coaches’ Challenge and Splash and Dash. Well done to all the swimmers who competed and to all the volunteers who helped to support the galas. Facts and figures as always are provided by our very own ‘Statto’ David Fortescue – many thanks as always David. Please note that this year’s presentation evening is on Friday 6th December 2013 at Arnold Working Men’s Club starting at 7.30pm.

Gala Updates

National Swimming League Arnold Swimming Club played host in the first round of the National Swimming League West Midland Division which was held at Hucknall leisure centre in October. It was yet another memorable night for the Club as we finished 2nd behind Northgate and ahead of the likes of City of Coventry B and Stourbridge and in the process we gained 16 first places, 12 personal best times and 8 Club records. Individual Club records were set by Charly Neilson and Rohan Watkins both in the 100 metres breaststroke and by Jorge Phenix-Coyne who became the first swimmer in the Clubs history to go under a minute in the 100 metres backstroke (59.32 seconds for 4 lengths!). A big thank you to all the volunteers for supporting the Club and of course to all the swimmers and parents for making it a great evening. Falcon Open Meeting Well done to Jak and Katelynn Bodycott, Zoe Connellan, James Dwyer, Aimee Glendenning, Gabriel Hutton and Alistair Neal who represented the Club in the Falcon Open meeting with ALL swimmers setting at least one personal best time. Notts ASA Stage 2 In the final round of the Stage 2 gala held at Hucknall leisure centre we finished second ahead of Leander B, Ripley Rascals, Falcon and Nottingham Northern gaining 13 individual personal best times and 5 first places with individual first places for Ellie Blakey and Regan Jordan. On the night it was a great team effort by all the swimmers that enabled us to finish runners up to a very strong Mansfield team. Big thanks to all the volunteers who helped us host this gala.

Piper Surprise for Geoff

Geoffrey Davies, community pharmacist at M N Singhs Pharmacy in Arnold, received a huge surprise when a bagpiper turned up at the pharmacy playing Happy Birthday! The piper was arranged by pharmacy owner Michael Singh for Geoff’s 60th birthday as part of a suprise birthday party. Geoff, from Calverton, has worked at the pharmacy for 21 years and was bowled over by the gesture; “it was a complete surprise. I’ve always known I was appreciated but this made me realise just how much. It was a great day.”

Allen Sollys Volunteers by Bob Massey Christmas is now upon us and 2013 is soon to be a memory. 2014, a new year with new hopes and aspirations.

was to be four years of hell and not the adventure they thought it to be, “all over by Christmas.”

Not so a hundred years ago. These were troubled times for the British Empire. When the troubles of the year boiled over in 1914 and a state of war was declared the population rallied round to support the cause. People were very patriotic and willing to help to defend Britain.

What happened to this group? So far we have only identified a few of the faces. Some of them, of course, died and have their names inscribed on Arnold’s war memorial in the park and on a plaque of those from Allen and Sollys who died in the war. What happened to the others? The ones that survived and came home to “a land fit for heroes”.

When Kitchener, the Secretary for War, called for volunteers, the response was tremendous. The British army was the best in the world and Britain controlled a quarter of the world so this war would be over soon - possibly by Christmas - most people said...

Did they carry on with their interrupted lives or did they take a different course? Did they settle down into their old routine or did they fail to adjust to the new peace? What happened to the three women? Who were they and how and where did they serve their country? The Arnold Local History Group is planning an exhibition in October 2014 covering the Auxiliary Hospital on Arnot Hill Park and the stories of those who served in the Great War and survived to return to life in Arnold.

Everyone wanted to do their bit. Both men and women. When the call went out for volunteers in Arnold people queued to join up. There was competition among work places with work mates joining together aiming to provide the biggest contingent. The factories in Arnold were no exception with Allen and Sollys leading the way. The photo shows the first group to volunteer in 1914. It was not all men. Three women stand out in the photo among a wide cross section of men. What these volunteers did not realise at the time was that the war

We would love to hear from anyone who has stories to tell. To this end we are holding a Heritage Day at Arnold library meeting room from 10am-3pm on 25th January. There will be films, artefacts and pictures of the period. Please come along and share your photos, pictures and memories. There will be equipment to copy and print pictures and documents. Look out for the posters and flyers and visit www. arnold-history-group.org for more details. Don’t hide your stories and memories. We want to know about the Arnold heroes. The ordinary men and women who served their country.

I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG5 magazine.

Small Business Saturday On Saturday the 7th December Vernon will be joining a whole host of local businesses in Gedling to take part in Small Business Saturday. Small Business Saturday is a national grassroots campaign to encourage more people to shop locally. The idea was first introduced to the UK by Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary, Chuka Umunna and also has the support of the Prime Minister. Small businesses are vital to our communities. There are over 4.8 million in the UK and 14 million people work in them. The aim of Small Business Saturday is to raise the profile of these businesses up and down the country. Here in Gedling, Vernon will be going around the constituency meeting local business owners and customers to

help spread the word about their importance in our local area. Throughout the day he will be visiting shops and cafes in Arnold, Mapperley, Woodthorpe, Carlton and some of the smaller shopping areas in the constituency. You can follow his progress on Twitter @Vernon_CoakerMP. Small business Saturday is traditionally an American shopping holiday held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, which is one of the busiest shopping days of the year. The initiative started in 2010, and has generated a lot of custom for small businesses. Vernon is urging everyone to play their part in the community by making an extra effort to shop local and support small businesses which are essential to ensuring Britain’s economic recovery.

Councillor Barnes raised the amount for the children’s brain tumour research centre based at Nottingham University. The money was raised through a number of different events including a music concert, charity dinners and other fundraising events organised by the councillor during her year in office.

The £24,270 will go towards the installation of a fluorescent microscopic camera which will allow the University to improve its ways of investigating brain tumours in children. Councillor Barnes said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to all you wonderful, kind people in and around the borough. My husband Peter and I can’t thank you enough for your help in raising a fantastic £24,270.97 for the children’s brain tumour research centre and Headsmart, I’m sure all the children who are going to benefit will say thank you so much too.”

Nottinghamshire charity, Animal Accident Rescue Unit, is determined to find a loving home for a fabulous dog – who sadly has not received a single enquiry since being rescued six months ago. Dear Ellie has much to offer – if someone would simply give her the chance of a home. Sadly, she endured appalling conditions for the much of her young life: her former owner abandoned her and others without food or water for days. At three-years old, this Jack Russell terrier cross loves people and dogs – traits which precisely because of her dreadful start, show her loving nature. What Ellie most needs is a safe and settled home - could this be with you? A single side-effect of her former maltreatment, is her disliking being left alone. As Emma, a volunteer who knows Ellie well says: ‘She needs a patient owner to help change this; to prove it’s fine if she’s left, and her owner will always return.’ Separation is a common but resolvable issue, on which the charity can help. To discover more about Ellie, call or text 07946545256, leaving a message for the Adoption Volunteer to respond, or email admin@aaru.org. uk – again with your name and contact number. Ellie is micro-chipped, neutered, flea and worm treated, whilst all prospective homes are prechecked. For other enquiries, call 0115-9321555, email admin@aaru.org.uk or visit www.aaru.org. uk.

Are you interested in singing? Do you want to free your voice and enjoy good company?

Alan Johnson singers are looking for new members-men and women- to join them. Alan Johnson teaches all choir members to bring out their individual voice using the ‘Bel Canto’ technique. All choir members have lessons with Alan and learn at an individual pace. Getting into singing as an adult is lovely. Singing is a stress buster, gets us breathing properly, helps to release endorphins-the body’s ‘happy chemicals’, helps the energy flow and gets those feelings out. Many people feel singing gives them a therapeutic experience. The more your singing technique improves, the more control you gain and confidence grows as result. Individual lessons with Alan helps to get you started and you’ll find that you will be able to develop your voice-it is like a sport, the more you put in the more you get out! We meet every Tuesday @ The Lakeside Arnold from 19.30-21.30. You are most welcome to make an informal visit. For further information about The Alan Johnson Singers and lessons, please contact Alan and Debbie Johnson Tel 0115 9200417 or Email ajsingers@btinternet. com
