On a cold dark night nothing warms you up like a steaming bowl of soup with some crusty bread. All these recipes are easy to make and taste delicious.

Cauliflower Cheese Soup

Curried Lentil Soup

1tbsp veg oil 1 or 2 tbsp curry powder 1 onion chopped 3 carrots peeled & diced finely 250g lentils 1.2 ltrs veg stock salt & pepper tabasco sauce (optional) Greek yogurt to serve

n

k

S OU P it che Method

This soup is mild, thick and very creamy. 30g butter 1x onion chopped 1x cauliflower cut into florets 250ml milk 600ml veg stock 150g mature cheddar grated salt & pepper 1 tsp paprika

Method

Melt butter in a large saucepan. Cook onions gently until soft. Add the cauliflower and stir. Add stock. Bring to boil and simmer until florets are just tender. This will only take a few minutes. Take off heat and allow to cool for 10 mins. Add grated cheese and milk and stir. Liquidise until smooth. Place back in pan and heat gently. Season to taste. You shouldn't need much salt due to the cheese. Once in bowls sprinkle with paprika. Also delicious with crispy bacon scattered over.

Heat oil in a large saucepan. Add onion and fry gently for 10 mins, add garlic and fry for another 5 mins til onions are soft. Add curry powder, stir and cook for 1 min. Add carrots and mix well. Cook for 1 min. Add lentils and stock and stir well. Bring to the boil and simmer until lentil and carrot are soft (about 20 mins). Liquidise and place back in pan. Taste and season accordingly. I find no salt needed if I use stock cubes. If you want the soup to have an extra kick add a few drops of Tabasco. To serve add a swirl of Greek yogurt to each bowl.

French Onion Soup

30g butter 2 tbsp olive oil 700g onions thinly sliced 1 ltre beef stock 250ml white wine 2 cloves garlic crushed salt & pepper to taste French stick 200/250g gruyere cheese grated Method

Heat oil and butter in large saucepan and fry onion and garlic gently until browned and soft (about 30 mins). Be careful not to burn the onions. Add the stock and wine and bring to the boil then simmer for 20 mins. Season to taste. Thickly slice the baguette and lightly toast both sides. Sprinkle cheese on top of the slices and grill until the cheese is bubbling. Put soup in bowls and float the baguette slices on top to serve.

Local MP stands up to prejudice by signing Holocaust Memorial Day Book of Commitment In January Vernon Coaker MP signed a Book of Commitment in the House of Commons, in doing so pledging his commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day and honouring those who died during the Holocaust.

January 27th marked the 68th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Nazi concentration and extermination camp which is the site of the largest mass murder in history. In the weeks running up to the day, the Holocaust Educational Trust placed a Book of Commitment in the House of Commons, giving MPs the chance to honour those who were persecuted and killed during the Holocaust and encouraging constituents to work together to combat prejudice and racism today. In signing the Book of Commitment, Vernon paid tribute to those who perished during the Holocaust and honoured the extraordinary

Holocaust survivors who work tirelessly to educate young people about what they endured, through the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Outreach programme. In the weeks leading up to and after Holocaust Memorial Day, thousands of commemorative events were arranged by schools, faith groups and community organisations across the country, remembering all the victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides. This year, people will also be encouraged to honour those communities that have been destroyed by genocide and reflect on the importance of coming together to oppose prejudice and hatred. Vernon Coaker MP: “Holocaust Memorial Day is an important opportunity to remember the victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides. I encourage all constituents to mark the day and to join members of community in the fight against prejudice and intolerance.” Karen Pollock MBE, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said: “We are proud that Vernon is supporting Holocaust Memorial Day this year. It is vitally important that we both remember and learn from the appalling events of the Holocaust – as well as ensuring that we continue to challenge all forms of hatred and bigotry.”

Access Group seeks new members The Gedling Access Group (GAG), a charitable organisation that seeks to improve life for disabled people in Gedling, is seeking new members. GAG aims to ensure that buildings and services across the borough are accessible to everyone who visits, lives and works there. The group has been around for the last 20 years and during that time has initiated many projects, including the creation of a sensory garden in Arnot Hill Park in Arnold. It’s also promoted making shops and offices more accessible in its booklet Getting about in Gedling, and has established a Shopmobility scheme in Arnold town centre that is managed and staffed entirely by volunteers. .

More recently, GAG has begun to review the accessibility of public toilets in the Borough, and has begun to gather information about accessible and flexible local transport schemes. The group is now seeking new members who have experience of disability themselves, or who are carers or family members of someone with a disability. GAG meets every six weeks on Wednesdays from 3pm until 4.30pm at the Civic Centre in Arnold, and help with transport can be provided where necessary. Anyone interested in joining GAG should contact Councillor Muriel Weisz on 0115 955 3211or Steve Wiseman on 0115 901 3779 or at steve.wiseman@gedling.gov.uk.

People caring for a relative or friend who lives in Gedling are being urged to sign up to a carer’s card which offers 24-hour support in the event of an emergency. The free card helps to ensure care can be provided on the carer’s behalf on an emergency basis.

Currently, 334 carers have signed up to the Carer’s Emergency Card scheme which is now solely managed by Nottinghamshire County Council.

Nottinghamshire are carers for loved ones and family members. The card gives an emergency telephone number that anyone can call. Staff answering the call will take the appropriate action that has been agreed by the carer, including contacting family members or friends or arranging emergency help if needed.

The Council wants more people to sign up to the scheme to help protect those who receive care in the county. An

Nature reserve tidied up by council, friend group and fast food giant Gedling Borough Council and McDonalds have joined forces to tidy up a popular Arnold nature reserve. Cllr Henry Wheeler and Neighbourhood warden, Niki Pekal, from Gedling Borough Council worked with McDonalds staff from various branches and the Friends of the Hobbucks, to take part in a litter picking exercise to clear up the Hobbucks.

The popular site benefits from native flora, hedgerows, wild flower meadows, scrubland grassland, veteran trees and plantation woodland, which are a valuable habitat for the sites vertebrae, species of bird and small mammals. Cllr Wheeler, from Gedling Borough Council, said “We are pleased to be working in partnership with McDonald's and The Friends of the Hobbucks, to help restore the original look of this popular nature reserve and help clear the site of litter and other rubbish as part of the Love Where You Live Keep Britain Tidy Campaign. The Hobbucks has been blighted by a lot of flytipping and vandalism from various different sources, so we are pleased that the volunteers today put their efforts into doing something positive for the Gedling community.”

The volunteers removed numerous waste and fly tipping from the site located on the urban fringe of Arnold. The Hobbucks, owned and partially maintained by Gedling Borough Council, is in the council’s Killisick ward and covers an area of approximately 14 hectares.

The Friends of the Hobbucks, was formed in 2007 by local residents to make improvements to the site, with the hope of making it an educational resource area. If you would like to volunteer to help preserve the Hobbucks, please contact the Friends of the Hobbucks on 07805 629654.

King George V Playing Fields Improvements Works by Gedling Borough Council to improve King George V playing fields in Arnold began on Monday 21 January. Gedling Homes and Nottinghamshire County Council have contributed funding of £150,000 for the development that includes the installation of a new children’s play area, outdoor gym and sports facilities. The council has developed its plans for improvements following consultation with a range of stakeholders including residents living close to the park, local schools, the Arnold Local Area Forum and the cricket and football clubs. Over 90% of residents asked were in favour of a new play area, garden area, and footpaths whilst nearly 75% were keen on a new outdoor gym and additional football pitches.

funding, the council plans to carry out further improvements later in the year, including: • A garden rest area with seating, sensory shrub beds and hedges • A skate park with specially laid out mounds and tree planting to provide a visual and sound barrier for both the skaters and local residents concerned with noise levels People can see artists’ impressions of how the new play areas will look on the council’s website, www.gedling.gov.uk/haveyoursay. The drawings will also be on display at the Civic Centre in Arnot Hill Park, Arnold.

The new play areas will be installed by the end of March. The main drive within the park will be closed to vehicles whilst works are taking place, but pedestrian access to the playing fields will be available as normal. Subject

VIRGIN LONDON MARATHON : Sunday 21st April 2013 RUNNING FOR KIDS WHO CAN’T!

Kevin Brocklehurst and his associate Richard Povey from Arnold Chiropody & Podiatry Clinic are in training to complete the 26.2 miles of the Virgin London Marathon for Get Kids Going! Neither of them has ever run a marathon but it has always been an ambition. After watching all the endeavours of 2012 (The Olympics & The Paralympics) they were inspired to enter the Virgin London Marathon, and chose Get Kids Going! as their nominated charity.

Get Kids Going! is a national charity which provides sports grants and sports wheelchairs for disabled children and young people so they can play and participate in sports at all levels. With the help of Get Kids Going! disabled children and youngsters can participate in marathons, athletics, rugby, tennis, skiing and lots of other sports. A sports wheelchair costs approximately £4,000 and the average sports grant ranges from £500 upwards. Get Kids Going! not only provides disabled children and youngsters with desperately needed equipment, but it gives them

independence, a life of their own, a fantastic interest and participation in sport. Get Kids Going! also helps with sports therapists, sports training, physiotherapy, travel to sporting events and design of sports wheelchairs with the aim of helping British children and youngsters become World & Paralympic champions! The President of Get Kids Going! is Lord Sebastian Coe CH KBE and Vice Presidents are Baroness Tanni GreyThompson DBE and David Weir CBE. There are over 200,000 disabled children and youngsters in Britain who need the help of Get Kids Going! Kevin and Richard are aiming to raise £4,500 for Get Kids Going and your help would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be made in the clinic or online at www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/ RichardPovey. All donators will be entered into a raffle to win a free chiropody/podiatry treatment. (If donating on line please put NG5 in the message box and fill in your name if you wish to be entered into the raffle). Kindly fuelled by NRG FUEL Sports Nutrition.

Arnold Chiropody & Podiatry Clinic We have 5 practitioners, Sarah Williams, Kevin Brocklehurst, Richard Povey and Temujin Eradhun and Carlie Bayes, all of whom are registered with the Health Professions Council. MOVE IT, LOSE IT, AND LOVE IT!

with your local Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitness Classes in Arnold and Sherwood Do you want to loose weight and shape up for your special day?

Why not read about Suzette’s story: Suzette joined one of the Arnold Rosemary Conley classes in January 2012 in order to loose weight for her wedding. She had tried other diet’s previously without success and loving exercise decided the Rosemary Conley classes would be an ideal way to loose weight and tone up as they combine weight loss with exercise. All classes offer a combination of dietary advice and exercise, which has been central to the life changing successes that many members have seen. Suzette set herself the target to loose weight before her big day, having already bought her dress, she new how much she wanted to loose. Suzette was very successful in her weight loss shedding 21lb, but she was staggered by the huge amount of inch loss particularly on her waist – 14 inches!! Her dress virtually had to be remade in order to fit her on the big day. Suzette dropped from a size 18 to a size 10, she says “I was getting married in August and I felt very overweight and had no confidence at all. Jo and the other members in class were so supportive. My wedding day was amazing and I felt like a princess – thanks to Jo!”

Swimming News... Presentation Evening

This year’s presentation evening was attended by approximately 250 swimmers and their relatives and friends at Arnold Working Mens Club on Friday 7th December 2012. A big thank you to Ian Tomlin, Teresa Kelly and David Fortescue for all the preparation which included several rehearsals to ensure the evening went without any glitches. This was the first year each swimmer who competed in the Club Championships was presented with their awards and all their achievements were displayed on the big screens to everyone present. Well done to all the swimmers for their achievements and to Teresa Kelly who was voted Volunteer of the year and Dave Palmer who was voted Coach of the year. Trophies were presented to swimmers by Bill Hopkins, President of Nottinghamshire ASA and Dave Palmer, Head Coach Performance Squad. The Club would like to extend its considerable thanks to Arnold Working Mens Club, in particular Sylvia, Paul and all the bar staff for making the evening so memorable.

President Nottinghamshire ASA - Bill Hopkins Further to the Nottinghamshire ASA Annual General Meeting held at the Arnold Civic Centre in November 2012, we are delighted and very proud to announce that Bill Hopkins was elected President of Nottinghamshire ASA. Bill has been coaching swimmers at the Club for almost 20 years and is still coaching swimmers most nights of the week. This is a fantastic achievement for Bill and richly deserved. Pictured above is Bill (wearing his chain of office) with the out-going President of Nottinghamshire ASA, Bernie Walker.

Swimming facts for 2012 courtesy of David Fortescue

Southglade Health Centre NHS Surgery in Bestwood opened in January 2012 after the local Primary Health Care Trust identified the need to increase GP services in the area. The surgery has already attracted over 800 patients and is continuing to grow. Practice Manager Margaret Moore commented; “The new surgery is bright, welcoming and very accessible with a range of services and flexible appointments”. People are really impressed when they enter the building. Tackling antisocial behaviour continues to be a priority for police in the Arnold area and we are working hard to make it a nicer place to live. The beat team is currently putting extra focus on the town centre once the schools close, engaging with youngsters, who congregate in groups, to help discourage any antisocial behaviour. These high-visibility patrols have had a big impact on the community during the Christmas period and into 2013 with officers deterring potential offenders and getting the chance to meet with members of the public to offer reassurance. Patrols will continue to further reduce any antisocial behaviour. The beat team has also been working closely with children during school time to increase their awareness of the impact of antisocial behaviour. Officers have held assemblies at a number of secondary schools and spoken with students about a whole range of issues including antisocial behaviour, drugs and alcohol. The interaction has increased students’ awareness and has been well received by the schools.

As well as talking to young people about drug misuse, the beat team has been targeting drug-related offences. Several warrants have been executed across the Gedling area with drugs being discovered and taken off the streets leading to a safer community. Multiple arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing. Officers are working hard to tackle drug crime. If you have any information you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or contact us on 101. Further to this we are continuing to work with local businesses. The New Year brings a renewed focus on both Pubwatch and Shopwatch with the aims of managing late night disorder and preventing shop theft. Forcewide, our annual Drink Drive Campaign resulted in more than 130 motorists being arrested. Throughout December and the New Year, officers stopped motorists suspected of driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Scores of breath tests were carried out and information from the public was followed up, leading to 135 people arrested for being over the legal limit while at the wheel. The limit is 35 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, and motorists can still be over the limit the morning after a night drinking.

POSITIVE OUTCOMES For many of us alcohol can be an enjoyable part of everyday life. For others it can cause difficulties. If you are trying to cut down on the amount of alcohol you drink, or to stop drinking altogether and you’re finding it harder than you had imagined, a support group might be the answer. Positive Outcomes is one of only a handful of independent alcohol support groups in Nottinghamshire run wholly by and for people who aim to control their drinking – cutting down or cutting it out. We are not health professionals, just ordinary people who have stopped drinking or who want to control their drinking. We meet each week in Nottingham city centre to listen, discuss and help each other in a safe, confidential and nonjudgemental environment. We are a drop-in group - there is no charge and you can come to as many or as few meetings as you like. We hope that we can help you but if you find we are not right for you, there is no pressure to come back. So if you think we can help and you would like to find out more, contact us for information on these numbers: Oxford Corner: 0115 948 5505 Mon, Tues & Fri, 9.30am-5pm Wed:9.30am-8pm,Thursday1pm-5pm Self Help Nottingham: 0115 911 1661 Mon to Fri 9am – 1pm E-mail: info@selfhelp.org.uk

The Dynamo House Café is open every Saturday morning from 10am to 12 noon. It is situated by the Winding House in Bestwood Country Park, just off Park Road, Bestwood Village. The cafe is run by community volunteers from the Friends of Bestwood Country Park, the Bestwood Village Women's Institute and the Bestwood Village Vision. Serving coffee, tea, hot chocolate, juice and home-baked cakes and biscuits, it also provides a place to dry out, warm up and make a loo stop for those using the park. The cafe has a wealth of information about the history of the park and maps to give away so you know where you are going on your walk. They welcome well behaved, friendly doggies and have even been known to hold the reins of horses whilst their riders pop inside to buy a drink and a cake. All profits go to the Friends of Bestwood Country Park who use the funds to provide extra amenities in the park.

Nottingham Turnpike In 1764 the road from Nottingham to Mansfield was described as being very bad and dangerous for travellers resulting in many accidents, and it was stated in the press at the time; “for want of more conspicuous marks strangers have frequently mistaken their way, been benighted and lost for many hours. A good turnpike road would effectually remedy these evils by making it easier and safer for travellers than it now is, and would likewise be a certain guide to them over the wide Forest even in the night time.” It took over twenty years for the turnpike to come into force. In 1787 the Act for making the road was passed which stated; “Whereas the Road leading from the south end of Boot Lane (Milton Street) in the Town of Nottingham to the Town of Mansfield in the County of Nottingham is in a ruinous condition, and incommodious for travellers and carriages and cannot be effectually made amended widened and kept in repair by ordinary course of law," To carry out the act, a turnpike company or trust was formed. This company had the right to impose tolls on the road users. The tolls were to be used for the upkeep and maintenance of the road. Toll gates and bars were installed at regular intervals along the route. The first gate was at Nottingham Forest near the present Rock Cemetery. The next was at Daybrook, where the road bends near the present city boundary. A side bar was installed at the Scout Lane (Woodborough Rd) junction and another side bar at the White Hart Inn at the Basford Lane (Oxclose Lane) turning. Tollhouses were often built to house the pikeman or toll collector beside the toll gate.

by Bob Massey

The people of Arnold were charged half tolls if going to Nottingham but most avoided the toll gates by using the side road where possible. In 1849 the Daybrook Toll Bar was broken into and £20 stolen. The burglars were caught and transported to the American penal colony for fifteen years. The new road allowed the fast and safe travel of mail, goods and passengers so that regular services could now be undertaken. The lowering of Redhill also greatly improved the route. The Nottingham Directory of 1825 shows the Sheffield Coach, "Royal Hope," as leaving the "Black's Head" in Nottingham every morning at 10.45am. The "White Lion" a Sheffield Express Post Coach ran every morning at 8am. By 1840 the Sheffield "Brilliant" had been added running every day at 4pm. The "Robin Hood" ran from Nottingham to Mansfield every afternoon at 4pm. Other coaches ran along this road to Mansfield at 6.30am, 10.30am and 11am. Trips further afield were now possible as the "Rapid" a coach to Manchester, via Mansfield, left every morning at 7am, while the "Robin Hood" left in the afternoon at 5pm. Regular wagon runs of goods meant more reliable deliveries with wagons from Nottingham going northwards daily at 2pm. Nottingham to Arnold trips were carried out seven times a day by both Nottingham and Arnold based carriers. With the arrival of the railways turnpikes declined. Train journeys were faster and more comfortable. In 1877 the act was finally removed and the roads eventually became the responsibility of the new county councils.

I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from any one with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail. com or post via NG5 magazine.

chorus roundup Bestwood Male Voice Choir’s Diamond Jubilee year drew to a close with a very successful run of high profile concerts. On 5 December, the choir were invited to the magnificant Southwell Minster to take part in the Age Concern and Age UK Support Group’s ‘A Christmas Celebration’. The following evening saw the choir singing to a capacity audience at St Leonard’s Church, Wollaton for the Rotary Club of Wollaton Park’s Christmas Music Concert. On 12 December the choir returned to Southwell Minster, where it had been invited to take part in the Emergency Services Carol Service, along with the Nottinghamshire Police Band. St John’s Church, Mansfield was the setting for the next concert on 13 December, the BBC Radio Nottingham’s Christmas Carol Service, led by Sunday Breakfast Show Presenter, Sarah Julian. The service was broadcast on BBC Radio Nottingham on Christmas Eve at 6pm and Christmas Day at 12 noon. The choir’s final contribution of the year was at St Mark’s Church, Bestwood Village on Sunday 16 December, joining in the service of Lessons and Carols and singing two carols alone. A very fitting end to a very exciting and rewarding Diamond Anniversary Year. Grand Central Chorus... A Champion year ahead

A wedding in the ancient and romantic Newstead Abbey, was the scene of a small Chorus performance in December. The Novotel, Long Eaton was the more mundane setting for the Chorus’s next appearance and proved an exacting start to the New Year. It was the venue for the National Barbershop Directors Academy, the chorus being used by the American educator to display the skills and techniques required of a successful Director. The New Year sees the members selling draw tickets, with a first prize of £400, to raise funds for the visit to Toronto where the Chorus are representing the U.K. in the International Barbershop competition. If you would like some, contact us. An auction is planned, sponsors being sought and a concert being arranged, the latter at Emmanuel Church in Loughborough on the 20th April, 2013. See the website www.grandcentralchorus.com for up to date information. If you are seeking an entertainment contact Peter on 01530 243822 or e-mail as below. Fees are negotiable. Quality is guaranteed. E-mail: publicity.gcc@gmail.com with any enquiry. Rehearsals are at Harrington School, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4BJ at 7.15.pm every Wednesday. If you are a potential singer, sponsor,
