HAPPY 2014

TO ALL OUR READERS!!! Another year over...where does the time go?? We hope you all had a fantastic festive season and are looking forward to 2014. We are constantly being told to eat less and move more, especially at this time of year so we decided to ask some young people to share their favourite sports with us all and give us some inspiration. See page 28. These cold, dark nights really do call for comfort food and there is none better than a steaming bowl of (healthy) stew. We have included three easy recipes to cheer you up. The Belle of the Ball – help a local cat look and feel great

Tel: 0115 926 8703 www.martinsfarm.co.uk

Dorket Head Farm, Arnold, NG5 8PU Approx 2000 healthy animals are put to sleep every week in the UK Low cost speying & neutering schemes for pets available in the Nottingham area Helen@preventunwantedpets.co.uk reg charity: 702569

Readers may remember Belle – the cat who was left horrifically scalded and badly burnt by someone – but thankfully rescued by Nottinghamshire’s Animal Accident Rescue Unit. After painstaking care and kind donations from volunteers and supporters, this local small charity is pleased to report that Belle is now looking and feeling much better – but is still sadly experiencing problems with her appalling wound. Entirely run by volunteers and donation-funded, the charity is determined to make Belle more comfortable, by finding an effective way to prevent Belle from scratching her wound and reopening it - as without it healing completely, Belle will be unable to enjoy a normal ‘cat’ life.

Great rates of pay!!! 8

Since her trauma, Belle has been living with a kind foster volunteer, who comments: ‘Belle’s looking great given what she’s been through; her coat’s growing back beautifully, but it can take as long as a year for cats to break a self-scratching habit, so anything to help beat this will help her.’ Belle would love either a special comfort, protective collar – or indeed claw clips, for which the charity is thus appealing for donations - as these will make a real difference to this little cat who has endured so much pain. Donations can be made online via the charity’s secure website at www.animalaccident.org.uk/donate, or by posting a cheque made payable to ‘Animal Accident Rescue Unit’, noting it is for ‘Belle’ to Animal Accident Rescue Unit, PO Box 5414, Nottingham NG14 5DT.

NottinghamLIVE.co.uk editor Darren Patterson brings us his monthly look at top Nottingham musicians. This month....BLUE VULTURE Formed in 2013 Blue Vulture are the brainchild of front man Bainy Bain, former frontman on local radio show Notts Live, after standing down from his radio presenter duties (due to family commitments) Bainy decided to return to the Nottingham music scene, this time as a performer rather than commentator.

With the band line up completed the band wasted no time in getting out playing with their debut gig coming just four weeks after forming as part of a Launchpad event at Nottingham venue The Doghouse, the set went down well, with recordings on it featuring on Trent Sound show Night Owl, and the band were invited to support The Others on a part of their 2013 UK Tour with Dominic Masters, of The Others, describing Blue Vulture as “great infectious songs and amazing stage presence”. Describing themselves as producing “joyful indie rock with a bitter and hateful undertone” Blue Vulture are geared up for a great 2014 with several high profile gigs and festival spots lined up, plus a debut EP is scheduled for release in February.

Bainy teamed up with old comrade, bassist and songwriter RP Sutton, with whom he has had a long standing working relationship, most notably as a part of award winning band Noel Street. A search for further members led to the recruitment of guitarist Big Dave Sansom and, finally, drummer Phil “The Greek” Foster on drums.

Solar Panels installed at Gedling Borough Council have generated enough energy to run every computer in the council for four years and saved enough CO2 emissions to fill the Civic Centre twice – in only six months! The panels installed on the Civic Centre, the Jubilee House depot in Arnold, and on the Richard Herrod Centre in Carlton, have generated 110,000 kilowatts of free electricity during a six month period – enough to run 250 computers for seven hours a day for four years. As well as generating electricity, the panels have also saved 16,000m3 of CO2 emissions - that’s enough to fill up the entire Council’s Civic Centre twice over. This is one of many ways in which the Council is aiming to reduce its energy consumption and carbon footprint. It has developed a sustainability strategy and action plan to tackle this. Some of the Council’s key achievements so far include buying an electric car and installing an electric charging point, a publically accessible charging point will also soon be available in Arnold. The Council has installed motion sensitive lights and introduced a cycle loan scheme. It also supports the Eco Stars scheme which aims to reduce CO2 in the wider business community. Details of more eco-friendly initiatives are available in the Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan on the Council’s website.

Apply For That Lottery Grant Now! I am regularly in touch with the National Lottery regarding different projects in Gedling, but they always tell me that there are not as many applications from the area as there could be. I have been asked to try to encourage local groups to think about whether they could apply for help from the Lottery – big and small projects alike. If you don’t ask, you don’t get! So to help Gedling get all the help it can, here’s a breakdown of what you could apply for. Please let me know if you want my support. Many people are unaware that when they are playing the national lottery they are also contributing to ‘Good Causes,’ a programme that distributes money to different people and organisations via grants. There are a variety of different distributers that decide who has successfully applied for a grant. Since 1994 there has been more than £30 billion raised for Good Causes which has funded 420,000 projects in communities all over the country helping to make a real difference in heritage, sport, art, environmental and health sectors. The following distributers could be able to provide funding for a whole host of different projects and organisations in the NG5 area: Arts Council England – Funds a spectrum of activities including art galleries, museums and libraries. They grant money to projects big and small whether it’s to fund

small workshops and activity days to the redevelopment of local theatres. British Film Industry - The British Film Institute (BFI) awards National Lottery funding to support UK film projects and their distribution as well as market research. Big Lottery Fund (BIG) – Is one of the largest distributors of Lottery funding, giving money to different projects in local health, education and the environment, as well as different charitable endeavours. Heritage Lottery Fund - Awards grants to help preserve and improve heritage through community projects and larger scale renovations. The recent Tracks in Time event in Netherfield was funded in partnership with the Heritage lottery fund and proved to be a great success. Sport England - Works with communities and organizations across the country to help make sporting habits for life. UK Sport- Works to bring sport in the UK, world class success in the Olympic and Paralympic games. To find out about applying for funding call The National Lottery Funding Helpline on 0845 275 0000 or go to www.lotterygoodcauses. org.uk/funding-finder where more information is available about the grants that may be available to you.

Gedling Borough Council is urging people who are struggling paying their rent and council tax to get in touch to see if they are eligible for extra help. The council can provide ‘top up’ discretionary housing payments to people who have a shortfall in their rent or council tax and are already in receipt of benefits. People must apply for the funding and will need to show evidence that they are in financial hardship. The council has awarded top up payments to more than 230 applicants this year. Leader of the Council, Councillor John Clarke said: “There are many people who are feeling the pinch due to the government changes in their benefits. The discretionary payments are available to those who need it the most, we urge people to get in touch and apply for the extra help. We can’t guarantee that everyone will get help but we will consider each application on its individual merit.” The council is advising that people apply as soon as possible because the funding is year on year and may change at the end of the financial year. The scheme offers help for a short period of time but it can be up to six months or more if the circumstances clearly show that the applicant needs longer help. People can apply for discretionary housing payments by contacting the council on 0115 901 3970 or email housingbenefits@gedling. gov.uk

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team.... As we look forward towards the Easter holidays, it is a reminder that we will soon be putting the clocks forward. The nights will get lighter and we will lose an hour, but that is not all you could be losing this Spring time if you do not secure your belongings. Shed breaks are an easy way for thieves to get the upper hand. I am sure that if you think about your shed, you certainly wouldn’t want to go without your bike, your lawnmower, or even your expensive power tools. If this is the case, make this month the time to up your shed security. To secure your shed, invest in a good quality padlock that can’t be easily broken. Though it may seem like a lot of money now, I guarantee it will be worth it instead of having to replace all your shed valuables. If you have expensive items in your shed, always make sure to note down the serial numbers and photograph any valuables so you have a better chance of getting them back. Installing an outdoor security light which is activated my movement could be enough to make thieves think twice before breaking in, but as an extra precaution, you might want to consider installing a shed alarm as well. But if you’re short on cash, there are cheaper ways to up your security. Planting thorny bushes could make all the difference and protect you from being the next victim of shed crime. Plant

these next to walls and fences for maximum protection. And as the nights get lighter you may be thinking that you are out of the woods when it comes to having to increase your own personal safety, but dark or not, thieves will not rest. Theft from the person increases around this time of year, with mobile phones the most commonly stolen items in the UK, so make sure that you don’t become the next target for opportunists. I am sure that for many of you, your phones are among your most valued belongings, but having them on show when you’re out and about could leave you counting the cost of doing so. But why you? You might think that phone theft won’t happen to you, and that it is safe to have your phone out just this once, but is it really worth taking the risk? Could you justify shelling out hundreds of pounds to replace an iPhone, just for the sake of replying to that one text while you’re walking down the street? Or think of it this way – would you keep a bundle of cash poking out of your back pocket or on the table of a café or bar? The chance of becoming a victim of crime, no matter what the crime, is never worth taking a risk. If you have been a victim of crime or know somebody who has been, call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously, and help us to keep your area a safe place to live and work.

Ella’s Teen Talk:

Getting the most from sixth form....

I hate pressure. I am also very pathetic at making decisions; so when someone puts pressure on me to make a decision it never goes too well. School is always putting me in this position and most recently they asked me to start applying to sixth form and college. That is a lot of pressure around a big decision.

Ella Higginbotham aged 16

I’ve heard so many people say that A-levels are one of the hardest things you will ever do (I know this because my 17 year old sister makes the stresses of it all very clear) so this doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence for the next two years. However, they say if you keep doing the things you enjoy then you will get through it, and that’s where I intend to start! My main priority is having friends that keep me grounded; whether that is the friends at my current school or making friends at a new college or sixth form. Surrounding yourself with a good group of people is just as important as everything academic, so try not to get too caught up in it all and remember the people that will help keep you sane through it! Of course I am not saying that the education side isn’t important, because actually in the end that is the whole point, so you do have to focus on what your strengths are. Choose a sixth form/ college where you will feel comfortable with the people and that offers the facilities that you would personally benefit from; choose your subjects wisely, think about that final results day and which subjects you feel you can really achieve in! Other than that, you have to remember that sixth form and college is an experience. Despite what you probably think, it isn’t there to try and ruin your life but to help build your dream future. My parents always tell me stories of how when they were in sixth form (which Next was a looooong time ago) they would sit and play games in the common room issue: and not put too much pressure on themselves. They are both happy and in good jobs and this helps put things into perspective for me. So take the Handling opportunity, have fun getting to know new people and take the challenges in Friends your stride because if you let stress take over then sixth form could be your worst enemy!

Our Award-Winning Local Ladies The commitment of three local women to Girlguiding in Nottinghamshire has been acknowledged by some very special awards. The year opened with the news that Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s County Treasurer Pam Lamb (pictured left) has been awarded a British Empire Medal for services to Girlguiding and the community. Pam lives in Arnold and has been a member of Guiding’s county team since 1999, although her involvement goes back to 1978 when she was appointed to lead 1st Daybrook (St Paul’s) Brownies, a unit which she ran for 25 years. Pam’s other roles have included District Commissioner and Division Administrator and Treasurer, whilst she even finds time to help in Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s shop in Carlton. Pam’s commitment to the community has also led to her being treasurer for Daybrook (St Paul’s) Playgroup, collecting fees and organising ticket sales for a local dancing school, being secretary and treasurer for Gedling Borough Arts Association and treasurer for St Timothy’s Church & Community Centre. Another award-winning Guider is Alison Thomas from Woodthorpe (pictured right), who has been presented with one of Girlguiding UK’s highest accolades - the Laurel Award. In addition to leading Aspley’s 86th Nottingham Guide & Ranger Unit, Alison has steered the county training team, helped stage Gang Shows, advocated Mencap’s Get Together training programme and instigated the ‘Night in Box’ when 700+ girls slept under cardboard boxes to highlight the plight of the homeless. The third member of this remarkable trio is Brownie Leader Jane Clarke (pictured left), who was presented with the Chief Commissioner’s Award for Outstanding Service. Jane’s nomination commended her skills in running Brownie units in Woodthorpe and Daybrook in addition to leading 2nd Woodthorpe Guides. County Commissioner Kate Royse says that it is thanks to women like Pam, Alison and Jane that Girlguiding Nottinghamshire can continue to offer so much. ‘Membership of Girlguiding is very important to girls all over Nottinghamshire but units can’t function without people like these special ladies,’ she reflects. ‘I invite anyone who feels they have something to offer to get in touch!’ For details on volunteering opportunities with Girlguiding Nottinghamshire, call 0115 987 7220 or visit www.girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk

Sometimes problems come and go. If we have strong personal foundations, and are resourced enough, we are more likely to move on quickly. If we are lacking self-esteem or, we are dogged by unhappy experiences and limiting beliefs perhaps from childhood experiences - we may not thrive so easily.

The Horseman by Bob Massey In the 18th Century, the road north of Nottingham was a wild and lonely place. North of the Nottingham Rock Cemetery was forest with only a simple track to follow towards Mansfield or Doncaster. The forest was the ideal location for highwaymen to stalk their victims. One of many highwaymen, or horsemen as they were then called, was Richard Palmer, more commonly known as Dick Turpin. Many stories and legends abound regarding his exploits and many inns claim to have been his haunts. An account exists, written by one of his accomplices, that sheds some light on Turpin’s local activities.

Turpin moved to the Nottingham area around 1735 and carried out a series of highway robberies along the old north road or Mansfield turnpike (now the A60). In order to get rid of the goods he had stolen Turpin obtained the services of a local crime boss called Albert Coney, who in turn used Tobias K as his fence. Turpin was not the gentleman highwayman of legend, but a very nasty, vicious criminal. He often tortured his victims until they told him the whereabouts of their money. Turpin had at least two deaths directly attributed to him during this time as well as inflicting multiple injuries to his victims. Albert Coney so feared Turpin that he once tramped 8 miles in the thick snow to meet him at Redhill to pay him and although being sought by the authorities himself returned again from Nottingham the next day to get Turpin more money. Turpin hid out for a time around Redhill, possibly staying at the Guide House, which was then an inn called the Chesterfield Arms. An ideal spot to learn about the travellers using the turnpike.

A Lincolnshire farmer, Tobias K, wrote a diary describing his involvement with Turpin; “Richard Turpin was a butcher by trade, tall, fresh coloured man, very much marked with the small pox, about five feet nine inches high, who according to the wanted posters at the time wore a blue grey coat and a natural wig”. Turpin turned to robbery after an unsuccessful stint as a smuggler in his home county of Essex. He and the Gregory gang, of which he was a member, then tried robbing isolated farm houses around Essex. After many of the gang had been captured,

When things became too hot for him after he moved back to Essex, Turpin moved north, to York. Sorry to disappoint you readers, but he did not make this infamous trip riding on Black Bess. Turpin never owned a horse of that name. This York trip was carried out by another highwayman called John ‘Swift Nick’ Nevinson some 50 years before. The tale about Turpin was based on a novel written some years after his death in which Turpin was just a caricature. Turpin was caught and hanged in York in 1739 after someone recognised his handwriting and claimed the reward for his capture. This reward was equivalent to £20,000 in today’s money. Scandal continued to follow him literally to the grave as his body was robbed by grave robbers. The robbers were caught and Turpins body was recovered and reburied in the church graveyard.

I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG5 magazine. www.arnold-history-group.org

WHAT’S YOUR WORTH? The real value of many people’s incomes has shrunk considerably over the past few years as wages fail to keep up with inflation. This coupled with a large number of employers struggling to maintain their workforce let alone offer pay increases has created a culture of “put up and shut up” which is demotivating and negative which in turn inhibits growth. As the economic forecasts at the start of this New Year continue to show steady signs of recovery some of you will be considering a career move where potentially you feel you will be better rewarded and valued. I would always advise caution in this scenario. A proven track record with one employer is still an asset on your CV rather than jumping ship every few years or so. Knowing how to negotiate a pay increase is a skill once learnt that will serve you well throughout your working life. When setting out to achieve this, your attitude towards the exercise is key. It’s not a case of ‘me v. them’ rather an aim to work in partnership so that both parties are satisfied with the outcome. Here are my recommendations to consider when planning this type of negotiation. • Timing – judge your request on your knowledge of your employer’s current situation. If there are redundancies pending then it’s most definitely not the right time to try and negotiate. It would be far better to raise the matter at the time of a personal review or appraisal. • Research – The internet is very effective for assessing current market values. Look at job adverts, salary surveys and social media ie LinkedIn to see what salaries are being offered. You could also speak to colleagues within your current organisation doing similar roles – however

82

by Helen Jones

be careful with this as some employment contracts contain restrictive covenants which do not allow employees to discuss remuneration with each other. • Communicate – Even if your immediate line manager is not the ultimate decision maker they are likely to be involved at some point in the process so do make them aware of your intentions. • Be specific – build your case with solid examples of results that demonstrate your value. Can you use recommendations from colleagues who work with you on a daily basis? • Discuss – by definition negotiation is about discussion and compromise. It makes sense to demonstrate a level of flexibility. If budgetary restraints prohibit any chance of a salary increase maybe extra holidays or a bonus scheme would be acceptable? • Be quiet – know when to not speak. Don’t commit to an offer immediately – take time to consider. When closing your discussions be gracious, professional and polite. The world of work is actually a very small place and with social media and networking sites becoming increasingly powerful you never know who is talking to whom. Make sure your professional reputation remains unblemished.
