ANNIE
A local animal charity which gives a ‘lifeline’ to abandoned domestic animals and wildlife, is in urgent need itself - of fosterers. With frequently no room to admit any more, an influx of abandoned animals at this cold time of year is a worry. Animal Accident Rescue Unit runs a foster system as it has no premises. Fostering benefits domestic pets by giving a ‘real’ home environment, even if temporary – particularly appreciated during winter months. Being possibly the charity’s most rewarding voluntary role, fosterers see the transformation from abandoned, nervous animals to happy, confident pets ready for adoption. As one fosterer explains: ‘Even if you can only offer a short-term home for an animal, we want to hear from you … all you need is space at home, be reliable and experience in looking after a cat or dog. For safety reasons, we expect foster cats to stay indoors.’ Dog fosterers must be patient and compassionate – but advice is offered, and all fosterers and eventual adopters are homechecked.
will be at the Royal Concert Hall from Mon 21 March - Sat 26 March 2016 For tickets and info: www.trch.co.uk
To discover more on helping transform the life of even one needy cat or dog, contact Victoria, Recruitment Officer on 07919576479. Except for other volunteering opportunities at the charity, this telephone number must not be used for any other purpose – or email admin@aaru.org.uk with your contact details.
All correct answers will be entered into a draw. The winner will be notified by Monday 14 March 2016. The performance is for Monday 21 March 2016 at 7.30pm.
To see who would love a new start, all the waiting animals are online at www. animalaccident.org.uk, whilst the charity’s lifeline number is 0115-9321555 (please leave your details for a volunteer to return your call).

The Embankment is a newly refurbished venue, situated on Trent Bridge. It was clear from the moment we walked in that the team at The Embankment are proud of the heritage of their building. Formerly the Boots “No.2” store in the company’s home city it also became the firm’s social club. The pub has been tastefully refurbished and adorned with Boots memorabilia, pharmaceutical antiques and striking wall art, some of which includes photographs of the local area from bygone years. The £600,000 investment is said to have ‘transformed the worst bits of the old interior and made a virtue of the best’. Original features - like the parquet floor, oak panelling, and stained glass - have been brought back to life, and complimented with contemporary features. With two bars, a restaurant, a conservatory, function rooms plus a planned gig venue downstairs, it lends itself well to community use. The adults only ‘Dispensary’ bar is particularly attractive and atmospheric, walking comfortably down the line between contemporary and tradition, and showcasing an excellent selection of real ale and craft beer. Their aim is to produce traditional food but with a Mediterranean twist and some British-style tapas – things like mini fishand-chips or cottage pie. We ate from the Sunday lunch menu. Starters were £2.95 to £3.95. We chose Serrano ham bruschetta topped with honey dressed watercress & pomegranate. A delight!
For mains our choices were steak, stilton & stout pie £9.95, chicken tikka masala £8.50 (both these were filling and delicious) or bangers & mash with onion gravy for £7.95 (chosen and enjoyed by our children). Our family were looked after well by Ryan. The meal was good quality and affordable and the place relaxing and casual. A good, honest venue serving great value food. In terms of The Embankment as a venue for your events like business seminars, conferences and meetings, team activities, training days, weddings, family celebrations and themed events they are happy to help you to plan your event and ensure you don’t pay more than you need to. The Embankment is a unique venue for all occasions. Relaxing and informal, within a great building with a fascinating history. Give it a try!

1.2kg cubed lamb (shoulder or leg) olive oil 1 head garlic - chopped 1 tin chopped tomatoes 1tsp caster sugar 2 tbsp tomato puree 2 onions - chopped 20g plain flour thyme - few sprigs 1 tsp marjoram 2 or 3 bay leaves 2 tbsp chopped parsley 35cl red wine optional - 50g extra fine capers or 100g olives or both! 500g farfalle 50g grated parmesan Method Use a cast iron pot with lid. Brown lamb in olive oil. Remove meat, discard fat. Add more oil, fry onion & garlic gently. Do not allow to brown. Add meat along with all other ingredients, season with salt & pepper. Top up with water to bring liquid level with meat. Bring to simmering, cook 45 mins to 1 hour depending on age of lamb. Serve with pasta and cheese. Serves 6.
4oz melted butter 10oz caster sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla essence 4oz plain flour 5 tbsp cocoa Method Sieve flour & salt into a bowl. Add sugar. Mix eggs together then pour into the mixture. Add melted butter & vanilla essence. Stir. Pour into a well greased 8” spring form cake tin. Place in pre-heated oven (170°C) for about 30 mins. Check after 25 mins.
Curried Carrot Soup Michael Caines, a Michelin star chef, kindly contributed this recipe. 500g carrots - peeled & chopped small 150g onions - chopped 150g unsalted butter 2 cloves garlic - peeled & crushed 1 tsp cumin seeds 2g madras curry powder 300ml chicken stock 500ml water 1 bouquet garnie fresh coriander leaves Method Sweat onion, garlic & carrots in a saucepan with a pinch of salt for 5 mins. Careful not to brown. Meanwhile toast cumin seeds in a dry pan. Then add madras powder & toasted cumin seeds to the vegetables & sweat for 2 mins. Add the stock, water and bouquet garnie. Bring to boil & add a little salt. Reduce to simmer for 30 mins. Then blend to a fine purée, pass through a sieve, return to a clean pan, season and garnish with coriander leaves. Help others get connected and become a Nottinghamshire Digital Champion “One lady I know just wants to be able to Skype and FaceTime her daughter in New Zealand. I think that’s where being a Digital Champion can make a real difference”. Joe, Nottinghamshire Digital Champion Nottinghamshire County Council is calling on local residents to join their growing community of Digital Champions Being able to use the internet is an essential skill in this modern world, however many people are missing out because they’re not online. In fact an estimated 1 in 5 UK adults¹ don’t have ‘basic digital skills’ and in Nottinghamshire alone around 1 in 7 local residents² have never used the internet. In May this year the Council launched the Nottinghamshire Digital Champions Network (NDCN) as part of the Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire Programme. So far over 50 volunteers have got involved to help residents and businesses use the internet. If you are passionate about life online, you can be a Nottinghamshire Digital Champion. You don’t need to be an IT whizz; just have some basic digital skills, a bit of spare time and a willingness to help others. In return you’ll get free training and support, certificates and badges to add to your CV and a great feeling of personal satisfaction! Visit www.digitalchampionsnetwork.com/ nottinghamshire or email ndcn@digitalunite. com
7 Expert Tips For Job Hunting in 2016 Now that Christmas has been celebrated it’s time to look ahead to 2016. This is when we all have the most enthusiasm and motivation to achieve our goals. To help you with your job search in 2016, here are some expert tips to remember: 1. Make use of social media tools like Twitter. Jacob Share at JobMob recommends taking to Twitter to find a new job, starting with personal branding and networking with key contacts in your industry. 2. Refresh and revamp your CV. The first day of January is the ideal time to give your CV a spruceup. Key points to remember – keep your CV concise and job-relevant, avoid obvious clichés like ‘team player’ and ‘conscientious worker’ and bring to the fore your unique selling points (USPs). 3. Make a list of your best personal qualities. According to Tanya de Grunwald, founder of GraduateFog.co.uk, we shouldn’t all be solely focused on degrees and qualifications. Personal qualities matter too, such as being really good with people, coming up with innovative ideas or teaching others. 4. Research your chosen industry and talk to key players. If you’re serious about working in a particular industry, you need to know it inside-out, as well as all the latest developments and trends. 5. Practice interviewing. You might feel a little silly, but practising interviewing with friends or family can help you to be prepared and polished when it comes to the real thing. ExpertBeacon.com recommends working on answering and asking questions, body language and eye contact, as well as that allimportant interview wardrobe. 6. Create a system and a strategy for job-hunting. You need to be organised, targeted and systematic to get the best results. 7. Look for volunteering opportunities. This is another top ExpertBeacon.com tip, helping you to get experience and make connections in your chosen field. For advice and help finding your ideal new career in 2016, or for specialist recruitment services for your business, get in touch with the expert team at SOLOS Recruitment Consultants.

a helping hand Transported with delight thanks to Gedling Voluntary Transport Scheme
Gedling Voluntary Transport is looking for voluntary drivers to take elderly customers to the doctor, to appointments, shopping, to social clubs and help them get out and about. The scheme currently has over 20 regular volunteer drivers on its books, but is keen to expand and take on another 20 drivers to meet the increased demand. The voluntary transport scheme is run by Rushcliffe Community and Voluntary Service (CVS) who has been awarded the Community Transport Association Quality Mark demonstrating their top class transport operations, governance, personnel, health and safety and corporate social responsibility. Rushcliffe CVS has been organising transport for elderly and vulnerable people for over 30 years. Volunteers use their own cars to take passengers out. Most drivers are retired or have at least 2 hours availability between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday. Drivers need to have a car that is in good condition, MOT’d, insured and need to like helping people and talking to them. Drivers all have to undergo DRB (Disclosure and Barring Service) checks as well and providing 2 references. Passengers pay an annual registration fee and 45p/mile to cover the driver’s costs. If you would like to volunteer as a driver, or would like to use the service or know someone who would, call the transport team on 0115 969 9060 or email gedlingtransport@ rushcliffecvs.org.uk to find out more. The Recovery from Separation & Divorce course gives help and support, as well as practical tools, to get through your relationship breakdown and divorce. It is a safe, non-judgmental environment to meet others who are in the same situation, which allows discussions and questions whilst grappling with important issues. The course has been developed by divorcees with different specialties: a judge, solicitors, communications experts, counsellors, family life experts, and mediation advisers. It has been helping thousands of people recover from relationship breakdown. All the people that run and help with the course have been through divorce and separation themselves and have a passion to help others recover completely from the impact that relationship breakdown brings. Although the RSD course is run in a church building in the city centre, it is specifically designed for people who may not go to church or who do not want to discuss faith issues. The setting is welcoming, relaxed and unthreatening. What others have said after being on this course:“I now feel less like a failure, less like a social pariah and less as if I have let myself and others down”. “I wish I’d come on this course before now”. “I’m excited about finding myself, investing in and nurturing the relationships that matter to me”. The courses run over an eight week period. They ask for a small donation of £30 towards refreshments and materials, however bursaries are available for people under financial pressure. Register to vote in 2016 Whilst there might not be a General Election for another four years, there are frequent opportunities for UK voters to have their say at the ballot box. This year we may be asked to cast our votes for a Police and Crime Commissioner, as well as to decide whether the UK should remain in the European Union. Of course, in order to use their vote, eligible voters must first join the electoral register. The system of registration has changed recently and new voters are now required to register themselves rather than deferring to their head of household. So, who can register and how do you do it? Anyone aged 16 or over, who is resident in the UK and a citizen of the UK, the European Union, the Commonwealth or
the current/former British Territories is eligible to register. 16 and 17 year olds who join the register will be listed as “attainers” until they are eligible to vote at age 18. The easiest way to register is to go online. Simply visit www.gov.uk/registerto-vote and complete the online form. If you do not have access to the internet, contact the Elections Team at Gedling Borough Council to request a paper form (details below). For more information about registering to vote in Gedling, visit http://www. gedling.gov.uk/councillorsmeetings/ elections/registration/ or contact the Gedling Borough Council Elections Team on 0115 9013917 or at elections@ gedling.gov.uk.

‘Every picture tells a story’. That’s certainly the case with a brilliant series of photographs which has captured how two Notts Guiders rose to the challenge of a lifetime. Gillian Kendall from Warren Hill in Arnold and Rebecca Scattergood from Toton joined 27 other Girlguiding members and supporters on a week-long trek to Machu Picchu, a 15thcentury Inca site high in the Peruvian Andes. The party overcame many emotional and physical challenges during the trip, not least finding that routes to the start of the trek were blockaded in protest against the proposed privatisation of the trail. The Notts pair each had to raise £4,000 in order to take part in the expedition: half of this has gone into a fund which supports disadvantaged members of Girlguiding UK and Rebecca is keen to stress the importance of the challenge in terms of helping others. ‘Having been part of Guiding for so long, I feel it’s my turn to give something back,’ she explains. Gillian agrees: ‘I’m really hoping the money we’ve raised will allow more girls and young women to make the most of the opportunities which being a member of Girlguiding has opened up for me – whether that’s international travel, learning new skills or making new friendships.’ Girlguiding Nottinghamshire needs to boost the numbers of its adult volunteers to enable more members to rise to challenges such as this. Be Kind To Yourself The first couple of months of the new year can be cold, dark and miserable. Party season is over. You’ve drunk far too much, eaten your own body weight in chocolate oranges, not moved off the settee for a fortnight (reaching for the remote doesn’t count!) and spent the GNP of a small country on presents. Does it really make sense to suddenly pledge to lose 3 stone in three weeks, join a gym and go every night and not spend another penny until next December? I don’t think so!! A few years ago I decided to give up making resolutions on new years eve. The pattern was the same every year. Setting myself up to fail, then beating myself up when, surprise, surprise, I achieved nothing. As a general rule January and February can be pretty bleak. Depriving yourself of things that make you happy doesn’t help. Forget resolutions and instead focus on being nice to yourself. I recently came across an old Facebook page called “Be Kind To Yourself Challenge”. All you had to do was come up with one complementary thing about yourself every day for a month. What a lovely idea. It beats starving yourself anyway. If you must set yourself some goals for 2016 then at least make them realistic. Be honest with yourself.
Setting rules like no chocolate/alcohol/ spending money for four weeks rarely works. Instead why not try avoiding chocolate from Monday to Thursday? Knowing there is a light at the end of the tunnel makes a massive psychological difference. Same goes for exercise. Think about what you enjoy. I tried a Zumba class once. Never again. I was awful. But plenty of people love it. And if you love something you are much more likely to stick with it. If you hate the idea of a gym then maybe long walks would work. Small changes can make a big difference. There are loads of great apps to help you achieve goals. Here at ng magazines we have all done the C25K. None of us could run at all let alone 5k. We all used the app , gradually building up at our own pace and it works! We can all now run 5k without stopping. So let’s enjoy these first few months of 2016. Let’s celebrate what we have! Let’s take small, realistic steps towards our goals. If we feel like a bar of chocolate then lets have one! Eat well, sleep lots, drink plenty of water, move more, be mindful of your surroundings, say one nice thing about yourself everyday and things suddenly don’t seem too bad. © Ali Wale

Girls Make It Happen Gets Over £114k Sport England Boost A Gedling sports project set up to get more women and girls active has been awarded £114,376 by Sport England. The Girls Make It Happen project will create more opportunities for women and girls in Gedling to be more active. A variety of fun, non-pressurised activities will be set up in the area, focussing on getting women together and trying something new!
them and at a time to suit them. It could be a group of women meeting at a café and going for a run or an outdoor bootcamp in the local park where women can bring their children along. There is something for everyone!” Councillor John Clarke, leader of Gedling Borough Council said: “We were so pleased to support Gedling Sports Partnership’s bid for this funding and are thrilled that the ‘Girls Make it Happen’ project will help the women and girls of the borough to get more active.” This project is one of over 40 projects to secure a share in £8.2 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England. Encouraging people to give sport a go, the fund empowers local communities to reach out to people who for one reason or another don’t exercise.
The Sports England funding was won by Gedling Sports Partnership who, with support from Gedling Borough Council, successfully bid for the money in the summer. The first Girls Make It Happen session took place back in October 2015 at Sherwood Academy, giving women and girls the chance to take part in a free recreational basketball session in a relaxed environment. Rachel Kemp, Director of Community Projects for Gedling Sports Partnership, said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive this Sport England funding towards total project costs of £174,959. We want to encourage more women and girls in Gedling to get involved in sport by creating a warm and welcoming environment, where participants can feel comfortable and confident taking part and have lots of fun. Girls Make It Happen is all about putting on sporting opportunities where women want

Announcing the funding, Sport England Director of Community Sport, Mike Diaper, said, “It’s great to be working with innovative projects like Girls Make It Happen which offer more people the chance to get active in a way that suits them best. Given the overwhelming benefits of being active, it’s important that age, gender, or income never prevent anyone from taking part.” Here are some of the exciting sessions taking place over the borough: Yoga Class – Every Monday, 6.30pm – 7.30pm, at Sherwood Academy (Lecture Theatre) Basketball – Every Thursday, 7pm – 8pm at Sherwood Academy You can find out more details of the programme on our website:

The success of this business lies in the fact that at its core has always been customer satisfaction and value for money. There’s that extra reassurance with a family business that there is always someone on the end of the phone, should the need arise.

The time from ordering to installation is two weeks! This is because everything is made in-house, phew… Long waiting times are now a thing of the past. Drop in sometime… have a look around!
Sliding Door Wardobes Ltd have stayed away from crazy offers that often don’t ring true, and instead have an ‘honest pricing policy’. What you see is what you get, so customers can rely on competitive pricing!

Snippets From History by Bob Massey
Its now nearly 10 years since I started writing articles for NG5 magazine. Little did I know when I was asked to put together a history page that so many words would flow from the computer keyboard! Over the past few years people kept asking me when I was going to write a book, then I realised I already had! All the articles that I had written for the magazines could easily form a book. That’s how my book “Snippets from History vol 1 Arnold and Mapperley” was born. With generous help from Ali and the staff of NG magazines the book was published in time for Christmas 2015. It contains some 64 articles, 70 photos and some 35000 words and is available from the NG magazine offices, Five Leaves Bookshop on by Bob Massey Long Row, Nottingham, The Bookcase, Main Street, Lowdham and MSR Newsagents on Front Street at £4.95.
Snippets from History perley Vol. 1 - Arnold & Map
lly A selection of articles origina magazines. published in ng5 and ng3
The last book on Arnold, “Arnold” by Bill Spick was written in 1990, but the most detailed history is “The History of Arnold” written in 1913 by the then vicar of Arnold Rev King, with contributions from many well known figures at the time. Both these books are long out of print and difficult to obtain. Two books of pictures of Arnold by Ken Negus, the librarian at Arnold library, published in 1991 are still in print. With my book I have tried not to write a chronological history. As these were originally magazine articles, I have concentrated on stories or tales of the area. Some have followed a theme, such as those about Mansfield Road or Arnot Hill Park, but others are about local
characters or events, like the story of the missing apprentice: Mr Sturevant Piggin was born in 1811 and by 1835 was a hosier and framesmith (a builder and repairer of stocking frames) living and working at Redhill. In the June of that year his apprentice, John Thorpe, absconded. This was a crime at the time, as Thorpe was bound to Piggin for seven years and had to live and work for him until he completed his apprenticeship. Piggin placed an advert in the Nottingham Review where he described Thorpe as 16 years old with a sallow complexion, light hair, stout build and 5ft 5” tall. When last seen he was wearing a black velveteen coat and waistcoat and brown beaverteen trousers. A reward of one Guinea (£1/1/) was offered for his return or if anyone would turn him over to the local jail. This advert may give us a clue to why Thorpe disappeared in the first place, showing us that Piggin treated the loss of his apprentice in the same way as if he had lost another commodity, like a horse. Piggin also advertised for staff in the same column of the paper. As this was for four full time staff for the framesmiths works, either business was booming or he had a large turnover of his work force...I wonder which! The more you research stories like this they often lead to very interesting conclusions and not always what you expect. With incidents like this one there’s always more to the story. Should my first book be a success there is still plenty of material for other volumes to come.
I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG5 magazine.

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team....
Staying visible while cycling at night When the days are shorter it is more important than ever to ensure your bicycle is not only road worthy but also kitted correctly for night use. Did you know that if you are on the roads when it’s dark your bicycle is legally required to have both lights and reflectors fitted? Here are some other legal requirements for cycling on roads at night: • Your front light must be white and have a 110 degree visibility • Your rear light must be red • Front and rear lights are allowed to flash • You must also have a red rear reflector and BS6102/2 amber reflectors on the front and rear of each pedal It is good practice to use your rear light when cycling during the autumn and winter months as the weather can change quickly and being as visible as possible on the road should be a priority.
especially when it is worn on parts of the body that move. Consider adding reflective items to body parts that move, i.e. shoes with reflective strips, reflective wrist bands and gloves and, if wearing a back pack or rucksack, ensure it has reflective strips or areas for greater visibility. We also recommend you wear a rear light on your back pack or your helmet for extra visibility. The additional height of the light will be at eye level for most motorists You should also ensure the batteries in your lights are always in full working order and not running low. Staying visible on the roads during the winter months is important; it doesn’t cost the earth and can help you have many hours of safe cycling.
Hi-viz clothing is also an ideal way of staying visible during dusk and dark nights. Reflective clothing is a highly effective way of being seen on the busy roads, Special Constabulary Recruitment - Are you interested in becoming a Special Constable? New Curtains & Blinds Showroom opening in Sherwood! Highbury Design are opening their new showroom opposite the Sherwood Bus Station this month, featuring a choice of 5,000 fabrics from Harlequin, Designers Guild, James Brindley plus lots more well-known names! Besides made-to-measure curtains and blinds there will be contemporary artworks, and art exhibitions will be held every month- business owners Stephanie and Nick are both artists originally and hand-painted blinds have always been a part of the repertoire at Highbury. 'We've had clients visiting us from all over the country to see our specialist blinds such as the Shoji Screens which are also used as room dividers, and we needed more space to show them off' explains Stephanie. Their Shoji blinds were recently shown on 'Grand Designs' and have also appeared on BBC2 on the 'Chelsea Flower Show' with award-winning Peonies from 'Binny Plants', in a Japanese display. After their Japanese blinds were shown on Sarah Beeny's 'Double Your House For Half The Money' they had 11,000 website hits from all over the UK! These are a lightweight version of traditional Japanese Shoji Screens- which were actually invented in China- and made with
fabrics rather than paper, for strength. Highbury's Shoji displays feature Indian Silks, French linens as well as polyesters and cottons- and conventional Vertical and Roller blinds are not forgotten, as they manufacture all types of blinds- although Nick says 'people may be surprised at seeing some of our displays, as we like to give an unusual twist to the way normal blinds are made!' So expect the unexpected when you call in- as well as beautiful curtains and Roman blindsHighbury Design are on 0115 9671188, or visit their website www. highburydesign.co.uk

pectre: S d n o B s e Jam Shaken... le t it L a ’m I After the pretty much perfect Skyfall, I was more than pumped for the next Bond film, especially as the team who made Skyfall were sticking around for it. And while the trailers for Spectre didn’t really seem to be hinting at the heights that Skyfall had accomplished I still had full faith in returning director, Sam Mendes, and team to deliver another sensational Bond. Sadly the small nagging feeling in the back of my mind turned out to be correct and not only was this a disappointing follow up to Skyfall but a mis-shaped end to Craig’s tenure as Bond. The story of Spectre sees Bond attempt to hunt down and eradicate the shadowy force known as Spectre. A a force that seems to be the horrifying puppet master to many of not only the world’s misfortunes but many of Bond’s own personal tragedies too. While that synopsis of the story makes this film sound like an emotionally charged conclusion to Craig’s Bond saga, surprisingly, emotional impact is one of the things sorely missing from this film. One main reason for this is the romance. While I am completely fine with its inclusion, its execution was flimsy at best. Another reason is the completely disappointing villain. Spoken of in only scared whispers for the majority of the film, not only does Waltz’s character, Ernst Stavro Blofeld, enter way too late into the game, but his connection to Bond is never really explored in any satisfying or interesting way. Having said that, Daniel Craig delivers stellar work here, maintaining the iconic persona of Bond in almost every action he does in this film. From jumping from a collapsing building, seducing a target for vital information, or effortlessly gunning down incoming enemy soldiers, every movement and look just oozed cool. However, even with such a smooth character at its disposal, the building collapsing set pieces never really seemed to grab me or make my heart race like the tube sequence in Skyfall did. This may have been, in big part, due to the shoddy CGI on offer in Spectre. Even with bad CGI and lacklustre set pieces one thing that saved and heightened much of this films moment to moment enjoyment was the fantastic cinematography on show here. Many of the shots were angled beautifully as Bond could be seen heroically standing over a jaw dropping vista as its setting sun tinged the whole image an intoxicating yellow hue.
Even in a considerably disappointing car chase, the way the speeding cars were shown to move and drift, with their amazing looking chassis, through the picturesque streets of Rome, made the set piece if not on-the-edge-of-your-seat exciting then definitely a joy to watch. Overall this film was more of a let-down than a success. With a disappointing villain, not-quite-there emotional core, lacklustre set pieces and horribly executed romance this seems like an unfitting end for Craig’s Bond. However the experience is uplifted through some amazing acting, with the ever smooth Bond shining in every aspect of his adventures; a massive positive that can be said of all the cast members, with some also bringing a fresh and welcome dose of comedy to proceedings. Spectre = 6/10 © Sam Burton (aged 18)

Arnold Hill Pupils Promote Reading Across The UK Arnold Hill Academy has been chosen to feature in a film to promote reading in schools across the country. And it’s all thanks to dedicated pupil Hannah Greensmith. The school has been picked to be the subject of a promotional film about national organisation Readathon. The charity gets pupils in 3000 schools across the UK taking part in sponsored reads every year to raise money for books and storytelling sessions for hospitalised children. 12 year-old Hannah was one of the most enthusiastic participants in Arnold Hill’s Readathon last year. And this year she benefited directly from their work when Readathon visited her while she was in hospital for an appendix operation. Arnold Hill has been organising Readathons for over 15 years and Hannah told their rep how much she enjoyed taking part. They were so impressed they asked if they could make a film about the school’s 2015 Readathon. Hannah’s parents Helen and Phil are delighted to see Arnold Hill getting national recognition for supporting Readathon. Helen said: “Readathon’s visit while Hannah was in hospital helped take her mind off having the operation and it also helped Phil and I at what was a very stressful and worrying time. It just goes to show that when you get involved with fund raising for a charity you may very well benefit from the charity itself in the future!”
