Flew The Eagles: How Arnold Got It’s Name Have you ever wondered where the name Arnold came from? Local councillor, John Parr has spent years researching the local area and can shed some light on the mystery for us. John was also inspired to write a poem, Flew The Eagles, about Arnold.
The Conquest of England In the year 1066 the last successful invaders of our shores arrived, the Normans under William, Duke of Normandy, who we know as William the Conqueror. On 14th October 1066, the battle of Hastings between the armies of Harold and William began. For several hours the English army held off the Normans attacks. Finally Harold was killed by an arrow in his eye; the English were beaten back, and by 4pm the battle was over, with William triumphant. On Christmas Day 1066, in Westminster Abbey, the question (according to old English custom) was put to the people, “Will you have this man for your King?” The question was put, first in English, and then in French. Shouts of “Yes, yes King William,” rang through the Church. Eighteen years later in 1086 the King ordered the Doomsday survey to be written and Arnold, like many other villages in the land, is placed on record for the first time. It is said that the King and his warriors passed through the district two years later to ravage York.
A theory arises that “hale” is a corruption of the Anglo- Saxon word, meaning “corner”, so a village at the corner of a forest walk or boundary. Over the years the town has grown in ‘stature and commerce’ and has rallied to the cause with its sons. The Boundary Inquiry in 1920 ‘thwarted’ Nottingham’s plan to engulf Arnold and the surrounding parishes, but clearly spotlighted the appalling living conditions still in existence. Progress as we now know it was achieved through council houses being built, and the old Arnold Orphanage being removed to make way for future development. In the ten years after the Second World War, 1000 new council houses were built. It is hoped that as the future citizens take over from the old, they will be as ‘proud and protective’ of their heritage, as they now contemplate the level of change that is going on in our world!! © John Parr Flew The Eagles Strong and powerful, on wings, so high, Eyes piercing bright, jewels in the sky, Soars majestic in its heavenly keep, A sweeping vigil, prey it seeks.
The land around Arnold was excellent for agriculture and honey production. The surrounding forest provided an everlasting supply of timber and fresh meat. The village was situated half a mile from the main road to the north and its potential was quickly recognized.
Surveys a kingdom of forest and trees, Rippled green meadows kissed by a breeze, Feeding roe deer beside woodland trails, Haven of partridge, pheasant, wood pigeon, quail.
The early name of the village first mentioned in the Doomsday book was Ernhal (1212), Arnhal (1334), and Arnold by 1474, and for many years its meaning was accepted as “eagles nest” by everyone.
Imperial monarch, above this vale, Where once described “Saxon Ernehale”, Now but a memory, distant and past, Forever an emblem, regal and fast.

We all love the nostalgia of the British seaside and proper fish and chips don't we? Well in the heart of Nottingham you can have a little bit of that and more at the George's Great British Kitchen. Pick up a newspaper (their ‘Proper British Menu’), sit in one of their beach huts, admire the quirky but stylish award winning restaurant design and then enjoy British food with a unique twist! We decided on a twist on the classic cod and mushy peas for our starters. Cod pakoras with a coriander and mint dip and also mushy pea fritters covered in crunchy seaweed batter. Every bit as nice as they sound. For mains, I went for the eye catching fish chowder in a toasted bread bowl. If you generally love fish and something a bit different, this is for you! My hubby made his usual burger choice with the lovely proper dirty double burger and wait for it..... twice cooked Stilton chips. They have to be tried!! The staff here are a particularly happy and helpful bunch, always nice!
There is an array of cocktails on offer too, ranging from splendid gin tipples to delectable sharing cocktails, served in a teapot with tea cups and saucers! Their trophy cabinet speaks volumes. They opened in 2014 and by 2015, they were winning awards for Best New Venue (Nottinghamshire Food and Drink Awards), Best International Restaurant Design and Best City Centre Experience at the Nottingham Post Food and Drink awards 2016.
As they say..... A good and proper place to enjoy the British seaside.... without leaving Nottingham.

Superfood Soups and Shakes Did you make any New Year’s resolutions? If you did, are you still on target or have you fallen at the first hurdle? I have only ever kept one New Year’s resolution in my entire life, but I optimistically try again every year. Most people attempt to “get fit” or stop smoking, or drink less or perhaps find a new job. Many of us resolve to “eat more healthily” and I am sure that many a New Year’s day is spent searching the back of the cupboards for the juicer that has been languishing there for the last couple of years, ready to juice or blend our almond butter and bee pollen or whatever this year’s “must have” ingredient is. We may even have a recipe book filled with “super smoothies”, miracle juice blends and cabbage soups promising to “detox” us and leave us with bright eyes and clear skin. The thing is, you have to be pretty committed to persevere
with wheatgrass, matcha and dandelion, and let’s be honest, most of them don’t taste all that pleasant, even if they are “doing us good”. But you can make some truly delicious and healthy soups and smoothies that will give you a real boost. These recipes are full of vitamins and nutrients that will help to revive flagging appetites after the excesses of the festive season and get you ready for the lighter evenings and milder days of spring. I can’t promise you’ll lose weight or cleanse your system or even feel 10 years younger, I can promise these are super tasty though, full of goodness and just that little bit different (and they don’t smell of grass cuttings!).

Curried Coconut,
Freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
and Kale Soup
Method You can either throw the lot in a slow cooker for 6 hours, or cook on the hob for around 2 ½ hours. Serve with crusty bread.
Peanut, Sweet Potato (this has a lot of ingredients, but is very, very simple to make, and hopefully most of them are already in your store cupboard) Ingredients (serves approx 8) 3 cloves of garlic, peeled & roughly chopped ½” knob of ginger, peeled & roughly chopped Handful of fresh coriander, roughly chopped Handful of parsley, roughly chopped 2 x jalapeno chillies Rock salt to taste 1 can full fat coconut milk I large leek 1 generous tsp cumin 1 generous tsp smoked paprika 1 generous tsp oregano 1 generous tsp mustard powder 1 generous tsp ginger powder 2 generous tsp curry powder 1/2 tsp cinnamon I pt water I large sweet potato (roasted, roughly chopped, inc. skin) Approx 100g shelled peanuts (blended, with 2 parts water) 100g shelled peanuts (whole) I tin black lentils Fresh kale (roughly chopped) Juice of 1/2 lime
Banana Nutshake This is a truly delicious dairy-free shake which the kids will love too! Ingredients (serves 1) ½ a banana (peeled, chopped & placed in the freezer) 2 handfuls of unsalted cashew nuts & 150ml of water (to make the cashew milk, soak the nuts for at least 2 hours in water (2 parts water) then blend the nuts and water together for 1 and a half minutes) 5 pitted dates Ice cubes Method Pour the cashew milk in the blender and add the frozen banana pieces, the dates and 5/6 ice cubes. Blend for 1½ minutes. Sprinkle with flaked dark chocolate and serve. (Thanks to Jago Barnes at “The Little Vegan” for this super recipe)
Beetroot Coconut Latte Ingredients (serves 1) Half a boiled (not pickled!) beetroot 100ml boiling water Couple of drops of vanilla essence 5 drops maple syrup or honey 150ml coconut milk (or milk of your choice) Method Blend the beetroot with the boiled water, vanilla essence and maple syrup. Froth your coconut milk in a milk frother or in a pan with a frothing whisk (if you haven’t got either you could just use warm milk, but obviously you don’t get the bubbles!). Pour the milk over the beetroot juice base and serve.

Volunteer in 2017
Almost everyone makes New Year’s resolutions. Many are negative like giving up something such as smoking, alcohol, chocolate etc. For 2017, think about setting some positive resolutions – help the community by becoming an expenses paid volunteer driver. Research shows that volunteers boost their self-esteem and happiness through helping charities to thrive. Gedling Voluntary Transport Scheme is keen to put people’s experience and spare time to good use. The charity provides affordable, reliable transport for elderly and disabled people who don’t drive, don’t have a car and can’t use public transport or taxis. The scheme keeps people active taking them to health appointments, to see friends and relatives, shopping and to social engagements. Anyone who likes driving, has a clean licence and likes helping people is urged to get in touch on gedlingtransport@rushcliffecvs. org.uk or 0115 969 9060. Expenses are covered at 45p per mile. Pete Chambers (pictured above), one of the regular volunteer drivers, says: “When I retired I needed an interest. I saw the advert for volunteer drivers and thought what a worthwhile thing to do. I have been doing it for over thirteen years now and it’s still very satisfying knowing you are helping clients get around. Over the years many of the clients and I have become friends.” More details at www.rushcliffecvs.org.uk

Awards for All: Go For It! As MP for Gedling, I have visited a large number of projects which have been funded by the National Lottery, and specifically by the Awards for All scheme. I am told, however, that Gedling as a whole does not make as many applications as other areas so I am using my column in NG5 to encourage local groups to consider applying. I have visited and heard locally from groups who have benefited, for example: • Schools who have improved their playgrounds, introduced new sports equipment or gardening areas or developed musical projects, with instruments and events being funded • Projects to promote inter-generational events • Celebrations and commemorations • Support for special educational needs projects • Writing groups • Support for mental health initiatives • Walking groups – for example printing of materials and updating websites • IT training, and other employability training, life skills support and so on
It will prioritise groups with smaller incomes. Due to high demand on the programme, organisations that have a large annual income may not be able to get funding through Awards for All, but it can be a lifechanger for small groups. You can apply to Awards for All England if you are a community or not-for-profit group, parish or town council, health body, or school. You do not need to be a registered charity to apply. You must have a bank account that requires at least two people to sign each cheque or withdrawal. If you are involved with a local group and think this could be a way to get some funding, take a look at their website: www.biglotteryfund.org.uk or ring the advice team on 0345 4 10 20 30. Let me know if you are successful!
Awards for All offers grants of between £300 and £10,000 for grassroots and community activity that aims to improve life for local people and neighbourhoods. It doesn’t have a deadline and you can apply at any time.

New Year, New Home For Mali?
Boxer Rescue News Happy New Year!
Readers may remember learning of a pregnant young cat who was dumped by a police station. Despite several appeals, Mali is still waiting for a home seven months on. Immediately on being rescued by local charity, Animal Accident Rescue Unit, Mali gave birth to five kittens! Whilst they and others have been rehomed, Mali is reappealing for her own home. Mali is just under two years old, and her fosterer says: ‘After her shaky start, she’s nervous of strangers but with patience she rewards you with such affection! She’s confident with other animals, so should be fine living with other pets.’ Like all the charity’s cats, Mali has been “snap” FIV/FeLV blood-tested and she is clear. She is wormed, flea-treated, neutered, micro-chipped, litter-trained plus vaccinated for a year; her new owner needs to continue these vaccinations. For details on Mali, email the Adoption Volunteer at admin@aaru.org.uk, who will respond as soon as possible. For safety reasons, the charity recommends its adopted cats are kept indoors for 6-8 weeks, plus in at night. It does not rehome cats on/ near busy roads except indoor cats - and all potential adoptions need a successful homecheck. Totally reliant on volunteers and donations, the charity urgently needs more Nottinghamarea cat and dog fosterers. It helps neglected, injured or vulnerable animals and birds rather than unwanted pets. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should leave a detailed message on 0115-9321555. For all rescued animals also still needing homes visit www. animalaccident.org.uk.

We have had an increase again in older dogs being surrendered to the Rescue and have had two boys aged 7 and 8 in kennels now for a very long time. It would be absolutely fantastic if we could finally find them their “fur-ever” home. Both boys are playful, and need to be in a home where they are the only dog without young children or cats. In return they will offer unconditional love, share your settee and keep you warm on cold evenings. This is also a special appeal for Jessie, a lovely 2 year old little girl who has been diagnosed with a life threatening disease for which there is no cure. Juvenile Kidney Disorder is a kidney disease that doesn’t allow the kidney’s to operate as they should, they don’t grow to their full size therefore cannot cope as the dog grows. Jessie has been diagnosed with this cruel disease and her owners have decided they can no longer mange her illness and have therefore signed her over to us. We agreed to take Jessie on in the hope we can find a foster-carer for her who is around during the day and ideally has experience of the disease. Jessie will need regular “toilet-breaks” and accidents are a possibility as the disease takes hold. The Trustees, on the advice of our Vet, have agreed to continue with medication as this will prolong the inevitable but there is no cure. We know she will only have a short life-span and we think we have found a special foster carer who can love and look after her for the remaining time she has, this could be months or years, but she will not live beyond the age of 4. Apart from her illness, she is a typical bouncy boxer who loves cuddles and walks but she does tire easily, we are therefore appealing for donations towards the cost of her medication, please see the just giving section on our web if you can help at all. If you can support us in any way; by donating financially, your time, leaflet drops, donating unused gifts or knitting, sewing, baking, anything we can include in raffles, no matter how large or small, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Thank you for you continued support and interest.

Vaccination of Pets The vaccination of our pets greatly improves their health and longevity. Some horrible diseases like Feline Enteritis and Canine Distemper are now thankfully extremely rare. Others such as Cat Flu and Canine Parvovirus are mainly seen in unvaccinated animals. Outbreaks of contagious illness such as Canine Kennel Cough and Myxomatosis in rabbits can be limited by vaccination. Generally your dog, cat, rabbit or ferret requires an initial primary course of inoculations as a youngster and then an annual booster throughout it’s life to maintain it’s protection. As your pet gets older it’s immune system is less efficient and it is more important to keep him or her vaccinated.
In these times of potential hardship owners are often tempted to not vaccinate their pets or let their boosters lapse but this can be a false economy and potentially life threatening to your beloved. To help clients with this many practices have schemes to help you spread out the cost of routine health care such as our Pet Health Club, which gives you the option to pay a monthly direct debit to cover the costs of routine health care such as vaccination, flea and worm control. To find out more check with your practice or check their web site for details. © Andrew Draper, Senior Vet, Oak House Veterinary Centre
Importantly alongside his annual booster your pet will also get a thorough health check when any other problems, such as early heart or dental disease, can be picked up and treated. It is also an ideal time to check that your pets worming and flea control is up to date.

I have 40 years experience in banking and finance. If you are looking to review exisiting Investments or Pensions or indeed looking to make new Investments for income/growth or both, I would be happy to help. It is crucial in today’s uncert ain financial climate that you regularly review your financial arrangements. At Tudor Court Financial Planning Ltd, we will arrange regular meetings at your home or our office to ensure that your financial goals are being achieved.
Formerly employed by Lloyds Bank for 32 years I specialise in life and critical illness cover for individuals and businesses. I am able to review existing arrangements and in most cases I am able to save you money and/or increase your level of protection. I am particularly interested in seeing people who have previously purchased Life/Critical Illness protection through banks, who may no longer have local support and who feel they may be paying too much for their cover.

New Year... Do I Really Need A New Start Every New Year a number of people will make a resolution to change jobs or look for a new career. The employment market in recent years has seen a strong recovery after the gloomy days of 2008/2009 and no longer do staff have to stay put out of a sense of gratitude for having a job. But despite the healthy state of the employment market is it always wise to move? • Am I taking a good job or just running away from a bad one? To make an informed decision, you need to know what appeals to you about the new opportunity—not just what you don’t like about your current company. • Do I know what I’m getting myself into? Will your visions of a pleasant work environment, rewarding projects and an appreciative manager be the reality? While the grass may indeed be greener on the other side, it still pays to do your homework. Research the firm’s corporate culture, financial stability and leadership. It’s amazing how much information is out there on the internet – and also try and network with current employees. • Will I be paid what I’m really worth? Don’t make the mistake of only comparing the salary offer to what you presently earn. Your paycheck isn’t necessarily the best benchmark. Glassdoor (www.glassdoor.co.uk) has a free salary comparison tool. • What does the total compensation package look like? Yes, salary matters. A lot. But don’t fall into the trap of focusing solely on that one element. A better benefits package, more generous pension plan and bigger bonus opportunities, for example, can boost your bottom line. Also consider your work/life balance. A shorter commute and increased holiday entitlement can make life much more pleasant. • Which company offers more room to grow and progress? At the end of the day, only one person is responsible for your career: you. But it’s certainly beneficial to have an employer that supports your professional development. Opportunity to access training, tuition reimbursement and to attend industry conferences can keep you moving forward professionally. Ideally, you want to work for a company that is committed to helping you grow your skills. Who offers a more clearly defined career path? Pay and benefits are important, but professional development and advancement potential should also be priorities. • Am I letting fear drive my decision? Just as it’s unwise to impulsively leave a job for the wrong reasons, don’t allow fear of the unfamiliar to hold you back from accepting a new one. Changing jobs always carries some degree of risk. But if you’ve thought through the situation and your gut is telling you to make a move, trust your intuition. And who are we to argue with Albert Einstein? “I believe in intuitions and inspirations...I sometimes feel that I am right. I do not know that I am” On behalf us all at SOLOS may I wish NG readers a happy and prosperous New Year. © Helen Jones

The Pinfold and Pinder by Bob Massey
Arnold was once an agricultural community. Although there were not many large farms, most people kept a few animals to help make ends meet. Before the Local Enclosures Act of 1791 Arnold had a large amount of common land on the outskirts of the village. The roads also had large grass verges. The local villagers were allowed to graze their animals on both the land and the verges free of charge as long as they were responsible for their animals and other users safety. Some animals would inevitably stray away from these feeding grounds which for the most part were not fenced or at best fenced poorly. They say “the grass is greener on the other side” and for these beasts, moving on to a field sown with new crops or new grass was just too tempting. If this happened they were rounded up by the local pinder and placed in the pinfold. The pinder was a parish council official whose job it was to collect stray animals and impound them until their owners collected them. The owners had to pay a fine that included the pinders fee and the cost of feeding and watering the animals. This fee also included any compensation to be paid to the owner of the land onto which the animals had strayed. The pinder was appointed each year at the Annual Easter Vestry Meeting of St Mary’s Church and very often this was a family position passed from one generation to another. The Hearson family in Arnold held this post for many years passing the position from father to son.
The enclosure in Arnold was stone built with high walls and a strong lockable gate. Its origins probably go back to the original founding of the village in the Iron Age. It was situated where the entrance to King George’s playing fields is now to be found. This was opposite the back entrance to the then British School (now the market). After the Enclosures Act there was little common land and it became used less and less. With the introduction of barbed wire fencing it then became a rare site to view animals within its walls. The pinfold was finally closed in 1888. The last pinder was John Hearson who had been appointed in 1886. After its closure the pinfold soon became dilapidated and was used for storage and a dumping ground until taken over by Henry Jew’s building and timber contractors. They used it to store timber at the site. Unfortunately they had a serious fire at the location which nearly spread to the adjacent houses and so it was closed. In some villages these pinfolds have become listed buildings and are being retained as part of the local heritage. Unfortunately Arnolds was demobilised along with the adjoining houses when the Arnot Hill Road and Gedling Roads were widened. There is now no sign of this part of our village heritage. The image below shows the wall of the pinfold to the right of the houses.
The animals that were impounded were kept in the pinfold. The terms pinfold and pound are of Saxon origin “pundfald” and “pund” both meaning an enclosure. There appears to be no difference in the terms pinfold and pound except that pound is more commonly used in the south of England and pinfold in the north. I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG5 magazine.

: Wars Stor y r a t S A e n O iews Rogue v e R n o t r Deser ve? u B e W l e u q e r The P The trek into Star Wars’ history has been a rocky and mostly turbulent one. It has broken many fans hearts, and turned the rest firmly to the dark side. But now with Star Wars in the hallowed hands of our supreme overlords at Disney, will the pairing of the words ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Prequel’ finally not lead to fear, anger, hate and suffering? Or are we destined to be trapped in this insidious loop of prequel torment? The Star Wars Story of Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, (the fourth or first Star Wars movie depending on how you stand in this war on continuity). It shows how the rebels got their hands on the plans to the biggest, baddest and scariest orb in all of cinema, the Death Star. Let’s start off with the obvious positives. With Star Wars’ long standing captivating and aesthetically awesome visual style, and Disney’s prowess in perfection, it’s safe to assume that this film would look visually astounding. And it does. What breathed new life into this Star Wars film was the tonal style and where this story put you in the Star Wars galaxy. While Phantom Menace took you to the lofty and pretentious height of Coruscant, Rogue One lets you experience the down-and-dirty roots of the galaxy far, far away. And while the strikingly gritty tone of the movie captured me from the very first shot, what never got me invested was the story. The biggest problem with it is that we know what happens. We know that the rebels get the Death Star plans and we know that Luke is able to blow it up and save the day in A New Hope; so throughout this film I felt no sense of suspense or intrigue. Another aspect of the film that felt oddly disconnected was the score. With Michael Giacchino taking the helm instead of John Williams, who has done it for every single Star Wars movie up to this point, it was obviously going to be slightly
different, but this score just seemed to miss the mark completely. Having said that, there were some truly shining stars that rose above the underwhelming plot and score. Three in particular; Donnie Yen, the blind, badass and all around great guy, Chirrut Imwe, his best friend and fellow badass who never leaves his home without his devastating heavy repeater cannon, Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen), and Alan Tudyk as the hilariously honest K-2SO. These three characters stole my heart from the moment they entered the story. Overall I was disappointed by this movie. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t get into the story or most of its characters. Nothing grabbed me to show me why Rogue One was a necessary or needed movie. Rogue One A Star Wars Story = 6/10 © Sam Burton (aged 19)

ith an impressive 82 years under its belt, the Savoy on Derby Road is the only pre-Second World War cinema left in Nottingham out of 52! It was built in 1935 by the architect Reginald Cooper in the style of art-deco with a curved front. It began its days with just one single auditorium until 1972 when it was rebuilt to become the multiscreened cinema it is today. The Savoy offers a nostalgic trip down memory lane for those of us lucky enough to remember the good old days of velvet seats and curtained screens. I can hear you humming the Pearl and Dean tune now!
The Savoy has majestically preserved the essence of the early days making any trip a real treat, and at only £18 for a family ticket* it’s very affordable too. If you are visiting as a couple then its newly refurbished big screen includes love seats designed especially for the Savoy and its customers to enjoy and snuggle up on. As well as offering the latest movies the Savoy streams live events such as The Royal Shakespeare Company productions and ‘Exhibition on Screen’ art events.
Win 1 of 5 family passes*
Savoy are great for children’s birthday parties too, offering a private screening of a blockbuster film of your choice for as little as £150 for up to 30 children and 8 adults, 2 free cinema tickets for the birthday girl or boy and use of the party room immediately after the film.
Just answer the following question:
Or for all you gamers out there how about a console party which only costs £95 for up to 2 hours? Ever wanted to play your favourite game on a large screen with your mates? Then this is the one for you.
Name:...........................................................................................
On top of all this the Savoy is a fully licensed wedding venue! That’s right you can hire the venue for your big day. To find out more info, what’s on and book tickets visit: www.savoyonline.co.uk or call 0115 947 5812

TAROSCOPES Air signs- Libra, Aquarius, Gemini
(Ten of Cups, Ten of Coins, Five of Cups) Everything’s peachy, so why so sad?.. Air signs feel rattled when the going’s good: pricked by ghosts from the past with their comparisons, warnings that history could repeat itself, or nudges to still prove something to people long gone. If you remain fixated on what’s behind you, you could miss the welcoming pathway before you. Don’t keep looking back, there’s joyful times awaiting.
Fire signs- Leo, Aries, Sagittarius
Earth signs- Capricorn, Virgo, Taurus (The Hierophant, Knight of Swords, The Devil)
Rebellion! Anarchy! There’s a fire lit beneath you to buck against the authority and ties that annoy you or thwart your personal development. You’re about to blast through your restraints with passion and courage. Some people will say you’re wrong, some will get caught by the debris, but you’re ready to take full ownership of your actions and show you’re your own boss in this life.
Water signs- Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio
(The Tower, Nine of Swords, Queen of Wands)
(Queen of Coins, Seven of Coins, Six of Cups)
The illusions and shadows that have long clouded something which troubles you are going to be suddenly swept away. For the first time, you will see this situation as it truly is; understanding how and why. Still here? Of course you are. Because there’s also a ‘what next’. You’re strong enough to tackle this and rebuild. The truth will point you in a new direction.
Someone, or something, from the past is going to return to delight and empower you. Embrace this old friend- be it a person, an opportunity or a skill- for it could ignite a new chapter in your life. Old energies are ready to return and be useful in the here and now. Welcome and follow them.

Clumber Park is a special and important place, which is why it’s one of only a handful of Grade I registered parks in the country and is enjoyed by so many. We are changing the way we admit visitors to the Park. We are doing this by removing the pay barrier around the Walled Kitchen Garden so that everyone who comes to Clumber Park can enjoy it, and by modifying our admissions model from pay-per-car to pay-perhead. The change came into effect on 4 January 2017. This change marks the start of a £8.5m programme of revitalisation of Clumber Park that will include restoring areas of heathland and important habitats for wildlife which have been badly damaged by cars and erosion, bringing the historic Walled Kitchen Garden and Pleasure Grounds to life, opening up views that have been lost, protecting ancient trees and investing in and improving visitor facilities. National Trust members will continue to benefit from free entry. Time for a Change? The decorations have been packed away for another year and by now the days are starting to get longer, even if only imperceptibly so right now. For many people, minds start turning to the idea of making changes in their lives. Some of you will no doubt be sick of the mention of New Year’s resolutions – maybe you make them every year and watch your resolve crumble a few hours into the first week, day even! Maybe others hate even the mention of resolutions and don’t make them and don’t intend to either. But for many, the start of a new year is like a fresh blank page just waiting to be written or drawn on. It’s a natural break in time, which can look like a good opportunity to make changes. That is how a new year always feels for me – a great opportunity to make positive changes in life, a chance to make this upcoming year the best one yet!
wedding) that makes training for a marathon best left until you have more time to give to it. It might be that right now isn’t the best time to get stuck into your life changes but a few months down the line will be better for you.
So how can you go about making sure that your resolutions for 2017 are your most successful yet?
Many life and business coaches recommend the SMART method of goal setting to help you achieve your goals. To utilise this method, you need to ensure that your goals are Specific (well defined rather than vague); Measurable (so you know that you have reached your goal), Achievable (not overreaching); Realistic (learning Italian = realistic, holidaying on the moon = maybe not so much) and finally,Time-bound (the date by which you want to have achieved your goal).
Firstly, it is a good idea to have a think about what is coming up in the year ahead and what you want to achieve. Is right now the best time to try to achieve these goals? Is there anything coming up in the year ahead that is likely to interfere with your plans for the year – or the flip side of that, is there something coming up in the year ahead that you want to have made life changes prior to? Maybe you want to learn to speak basic Italian before your dream trip to Rome in July or lose weight before your stint as a bridesmaid in September. Or alternatively, when you look at the months ahead, maybe you have so much going on (maybe a house move or planning a
Secondly, think about what exactly it is that you wish to achieve. Visualisation is a good technique to help you to work out what you would like to achieve and how it might make you feel when you have achieved your goal. If you sit and picture the “new you” in your mind, in as much detail as possible, you will get a good sense of what you want to achieve. Does it feel as good as you thought it would? Will it provide what you are looking for in life?
However, you don’t need to wait for a new year or spring or any specific date to make positive change to your life – any day can be a good day to make changes if that is what you think you need to do to lead your best life.

Ernehale Junior School celebrated the opening of two new classrooms with VIP guest Vernon Coaker MP. The classrooms, which will be used by year 6 children at the school, boast state of the art facilities including chairs that correct children’s posture. Jocelyn Newman age 10 said “The new classrooms are great and we now have a lot more room. We were pleased that Mr Coaker opened the classrooms because a lot of the pupils here are interested in politics; we have our own school council and Flying High Trust Parliament.” Head Teacher Anne Batley said that the school is excited about the new classrooms, “We are thrilled with the new classrooms at Ernehale and our children now have lots more space to work in.” Mr Coaker also received some challenging questions from Ernehale pupils who are learning all about politics and how it changes society. Vernon Coaker said, “I have really enjoyed my visit to Ernehale Junior School, it is fantastic to hear all of the questions that the children asked, the quality and maturity of their questions was amazing! The whole school was very attentive and these new classrooms are brilliant. Now the brilliant education that pupils at Ernehale get is matched by the quality of their buildings.”
Introducing... NG United
NG United is a new local football club that play at Bestwood Country Park. Ian Donaldson and Danny Stevenson started the club and now manage the older teams. They have done an amazing job getting this new club off the ground. Local businessman Richard Fletcher, who owns K & A Installations, sponsors the U8s, providing them with a new kit, balls and training equipment. Fantastic new training tops were provided by Central Fire & Security. Richard, who also manages the U8s along with Paul Swift says; “It’s not just about the football. The team has started lots of new friendships between parents as well as kids.” So far the U8s have had a great season with a 100% win record. Richard hopes to continue to support the team and is appealing for new players for next season. If you are interested then please contact NG United through their facebook page.

Kings Community Choir was formed in Autumn 2016 and we have some 30 regulars on Monday evenings (termtime) at 7:30pm; venue King's Centre, Shirley Drive, off Rolleston Drive, NG5 7JX. Everybody welcome. No charge. Refreshments provided. Audio parts are available on our website so you can practice in your own time. We have harmonized arrangements of popular stuff. At the Christmas Carol service we sang three pieces which were well received. In the new year we are due to sing at various venues eg residential accommodation and pubs. If you are interested or for more information please contact via the website: www.kcc.me.uk Resolving To Sing in 2017! Members of a choir are encouraging everyone to make their New Year’s resolution to sing, whatever their ability. The Tuneless Choir, open to those who “can’t carry a tune in a bucket”, began in West Bridgford in January 2016. It has proved to be very popular, with well over a hundred people attending twice a month. A new Choir started in Beeston in January. Founder Nadine Cooper says, “We knew about the benefits of singing before we launched the choir last year. It releases endorphins – the brain’s feel-good chemicals. Singing in a choir has been shown to have an even greater effect – it can reduce anxiety and depression, and increase life satisfaction.” Nadine believes that since most serious New Year’s resolutions slip before the first month of the year is out, it makes more sense to resolve to do something enjoyable. The Tuneless Choir sings popular songs, with ‘Daydream Believer’ by The Monkees topping a recent poll. People aren’t divided into parts, so everyone sings the lead vocals at whatever pitch they can manage. This results in a sound much better than the sum of the individuals, and one which has been compared to a rugby or football crowd. The Beeston Tuneless Choir meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month. The West Bridgford Tuneless Choir meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month at St Luke’s Church, Leahurst Road. First time attendance at either choir costs £10 including registration. It’s then the equivalent of £5 per week for a term, or £7 if you “pay as you go”, including refreshments. The choir is run by Nadine Cooper and Bernie Bracha. Nadine Cooper can be reached on tunelesschoir@gmail. com and 0797 934 4634. Bernie Bracha can be reached on bernie.bracha@tunelesschoir.com and 0773 546 1083.

A Warm Welcome For New Head Teacher
Notts Guide Jenna Shares Junior Bake Off Success
A formal welcoming ceremony for the new Head Teacher at Burntstump Seely Church of England Academy took place at Daybrook’s St Paul’s Church. Friends, families and pupils from the school, along with representatives of the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham and school Governors all joined in the ceremony where Anne Lumb, Diocesan Schools Adviser, presented new Head Teacher Heather Gabb with a Bible. Anne said, “As a Diocese we like to officially welcome new head teachers to our church schools and academies through a service of welcome organised by the local church. It is important to set the head teacher’s leadership within the context of the Christian faith which underpins the education offered in church schools and academies. The welcome service also provides an opportunity for the diocese and the local church to offer their support to the new head teacher, symbolised through the presentation of a Bible. We are especially pleased to welcome Heather as the new Head Teacher at Burntstump Seely and look forward to working with her as she leads the academy in this exciting new stage of its development.” Mr Chris Moodie, CEO of Southwell & Nottingham Multi-Academy Trust to which Burntstump Seely C of E Academy belongs says that the future of the school is bright. Heather Gabb said that she found the ceremony moving. “It was wonderful to feel the support of staff, pupils and their families who all showed their heartfelt dedication to the well-being of the school.” Heather said she has big plans for the future. The ceremony also saw the culmination of the children’s efforts to collect food and toiletries for local charity Framework, who support young homeless people to find accommodation.
It was a ‘sweet moment’ at Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s 1st A Woodthorpe Guide Unit when Jenna Ghattaora (11) was at last able to share her recent success in CBBC’s Junior Bake Off with her fellow Guides. Jenna had been sworn to secrecy about her involvement with the programme until it had been aired, so no-one outside her family knew about it in advance. ‘Imagine cooking under that sort of pressure – and keeping it all a secret too!’ said Guide Leader Sally Smith on behalf of the excited Woodthorpe Guiding team. To help Jenna celebrate, Sally brought in a box of cakes for the Guides to share at their weekly meeting: ‘Well, we just thought Jenna deserved a break from all that baking!’ In her quest to become 2016’s Junior Bake Off Champion, Jenna made an early impression on judges Allegra McEvedy and Nadiya Hussain with some phenomenal chocolate ginger volcano biscuits and a giant ‘chip butty’ made of sponge cake and shortbread. Jenna says she was taught to bake by her gran and her mum and admits that she likes to go ‘really wild’ in the kitchen. ‘I tend to veer towards sweet bakes as that means I can get creative in decorating them,’ she explains. After the broadcast of the semi-final, Jenna appeared live on CBBC’s Junior Bake Off – The After Party. She was also interviewed on BBC Radio Nottingham the following Sunday evening.

Talk To Us About Hate Crime Nottinghamshire Police are committed to tackling hate crime and treat all hate crime seriously. You should not have to put up with hate crime so please report every incident to us. Hate crime is any incident, which may or may not constitute a criminal offence, which is perceived by you or any other person, as being motivated by prejudice or hate. It can take many forms but it’s most commonly seen when a person acts differently towards you because of racism, homophobia, transphobia, disability, religion, belief or gender. We will listen to your concerns and support you to stop it from happening. If you are a victim of hate crime you may feel isolated, vulnerable, angry, frustrated and helpless. It’s important to know that you’re not alone and there are people who can help you.
Chief Constable Sue Fish said “I’m delighted that we are leading the way towards tackling misogyny in all its forms. It’s a very important aspect of the overall hate crime work being conducted and one that will make Nottinghamshire a safer place for all women. “What women face, often on a daily basis, is absolutely unacceptable and can be extremely distressing. Nottinghamshire Police is committed to taking misogynistic hate crime seriously and encourages anyone who is affected by it to contact us without hesitation. “The work we are doing with Nottingham Women’s Centre is so valuable and I am looking forward to continuing that work.” If you have been a victim of hate crime call your local police on 101.
In 2016 Nottinghamshire Police was the first force in the country to recognise misogyny as a hate crime
