Just the winter blues? E

ven though the festive season is over and all the fairy lights have been packed away for another year, it can feel like we’re stuck in the darkness of winter for some time yet. Even the most robust of us can start to pine for the lighter evenings and milder weather of spring. It’s not unusual for those of us in Northern climes to feel a bit down at this time of year due to the dark nights and short days. But for some people it goes beyond just feeling a bit glum and longing for a bit of sunlight because they suffer from a condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) – a form of recurring depression that strikes as the days get shorter and the dark nights take hold. Whilst the causes of SAD are unknown, it is thought that a lack of exposure to sunlight interferes with the production of melatonin and serotonin, both hormones playing a role in mood regulation. Symptoms of SAD resemble other forms of depression. You may find yourself suffering from a persistent low mood or losing any interest or pleasure in your normal everyday activities. You might experience sleep difficulties, in particular an inability to drag yourself out of bed in the morning, and that lethargy and lack of energy could follow you around all day. These are all symptoms of SAD but they are just as likely to point to non-seasonal depression too. People often mistakenly equate depression with suicidal feelings or desires to selfharm, which can lead some sufferers to believe that their persistent low mood and lack of enjoyment in life can’t be depression because they have no desire to end their life. Suicidal feelings should always

be taken seriously and if you, or someone close to you, is experiencing those kinds of feelings then they need to see a doctor. But please don’t dismiss an ongoing low mood or feelings of despair and worthlessness as something that you should just “get over” – these also indicate a depressive mood and should also be taken seriously. Whether your winter blues are caused by SAD or by non-seasonal depression, there are things you can do to feel better. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, there are a number of lifestyle measures you can take. Regular exercise can be particularly beneficial in reducing depressive feelings as can productive activity, such as indulging in a hobby. For SAD sufferers, light therapy can help in terms of replacing the sunlight in winter months. Sometimes the feelings run deeper and are harder to shift and that is when talking therapies such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) or counselling may be helpful. Antidepressant medication may also be required to help get your brain chemicals running at the correct levels again. There is no shame in seeking help for depressive thoughts – depression is an illness just like the flu. So, if you are feeling struck down by the winter blues at the moment, it might be a good idea to take a few minutes to think about whether this is just a minor mood blip or whether these feelings have been hanging around a little too long. Help is always available if you need it.

a helping hand Hospice Hails Its Heroes

Staff at Nottinghamshire Hospice have paid tribute to volunteers who ran, climbed, biked and skydived their way to raising an incredible £26,000 for the charity during 2017. The 49 charity challenge fundraisers were honoured at an event hosted by the hospice, in Woodborough Road, Nottingham, to say thank you for their efforts. Attended by Sherriff of Nottingham Councillor Glyn Jenkins and Great Britain two times World Champion para-triathlete Steve Judge, the event heard how many of the volunteers had pushed their bodies and minds to the limit, often in memory of a loved one who had benefitted from the care and professionalism of the hospice’s staff. They included a woman who lost four stone before performing a skydive – raising £1,000 in the process – a husband and wife team who ran the Nottingham Marathon and another volunteer who raised £3,000 by walking along the Great Wall of China. Another fundraiser honoured on the night was 29-year-old Amy Wesson (pictured) from Clifton, who raised £2,000 by running the Ikano Robin Hood Half Marathon – her first road race - last September. Mr Judge, who knows a bit about overcoming challenges himself, having battled back from losing his right leg in a car crash to becoming a champion triathlete, also paid tribute to the volunteers. He said: “It was amazing to hear some of the stories of the volunteers and how they overcame fears or pushed themselves beyond what they thought possible in order to raise what is a tremendous amount of money.” To find out more about its Challenge Events for 2018 or any other aspect of fundraising for Nottinghamshire Hospice contact the fundraising team on 0115 910 1008 or email fundraising@nottshospice.org

Wrestlers Grapple With Mental Health Awareness To Raise £1,000

Volunteers from the Arnold Methodist Church Befriending Group have received a cheque of £1,020 from a special wrestling fundraising event to raise awareness of mental health. The wrestling event was called ‘Smackdown to Mental Health’, a reference to the popular WWE wrestling franchise and was organised by Gedling Borough Councillor, Cllr Alex Scroggie. Fans were treated to wrestlers, including favourites G-Wizz and Barricade, take part in an 8-man tag team match described as the ‘biggest match in House of Pain history’ by event organisers. The money raised will go towards funding a crisis café at Arnold Methodist Church Befriending Group who run weekly sessions to help people with mental health problems. Sue Clayton, co-ordinator at Arnold Methodist Befriending Club said “This money helps us so much, we can use it to help plan ahead for the activities we put on at the sessions and we are very grateful to everyone involved.” Chris Nickolls also known as ‘Barricade’ from House of Pain Wrestling said; “I’ve suffered with mental health problems in the past so it was great to be able to help, we love what we do and to raise money for this important charity at the same time was brilliant.” The Arnold Methodist Befriending Group meet every Friday from 11am – 2pm at Arnold Methodist Church, Front Street, Arnold.

Kids Against Plastic Campaign I have been working with the Meek Family, who live in Gedling, on their Kids Against Plastics Campaign. Amy and Ella Meek, who attend The Redhill Academy, founded their campaign - Kids Against Plastics - two years ago. It aims to give people in the UK a clear understanding of the environmental effects of single-use plastic. They want people to stop using cups and lids, straws, bottles, bags, and cutlery, and to use metal substitutes such as metal straws instead. I was extremely impressed with the girl’s commitment to such a worthwhile cause and I wanted to find ways in which I could support them as not only their local Member of Parliament but as someone who cares very passionately about the environment. I raised the issue of single use plastic and the impact it is having on the environment in the House of the Commons, I mentioned the great work that was being done by Amy and Ella. I also arranged for the sisters to meet with MP Mary Creagh, the chairman of the environmental audit committee, in an attempt to help Parliament become more “plastic clever”.

When I raised the issue in the House of Commons I emphasised that the scheme needs to “go further”. I met the girls nearly six months ago when they were campaigning to get Gedling businesses plastic clever. It’s brilliant to do this locally, but I want to help them do it more widely. So I asked the girls to come down to London with me to raise it in Parliament. We have all caused the damage to our oceans, and it’s not enough for us to just be shocked and appalled by it. Since meeting the girls my thought process on using plastics has changed. I am also working with Gedling Borough Council and local councillors on this issue. It would be great if we could become the first plastic free constituency in the country. We are also hoping to make Parliament plastic clever. We have taken the message to London, so hopefully now we can take steps to start trying to change the law. If you would like to get involved and find out more about the Kids Against Plastic Campaign you can visit this website: www.beplasticclever.co.uk

Rescued by local charity, Animal Accident Rescue Unit, Edgar was found in a dreadful state – extremely thin and ill. Thanks to donations and fosterers from the charity, this former stray has fully recovered into a handsome feline with lovely glossy fur. Despite being healthy and just 3-4 years old, he has been waiting for a home for over six months. As his fosterer explains: ‘Edgar’s long wait is a surprise because he’s wonderful company, settles in quickly, is very affectionate and a real character!’ Edgar is litter-trained, micro-chipped, flea and worm treated plus vaccinated. His new owner will need to continue his vaccinations, and sensitive stomach diet which is widely available.

To discover more on Edgar, contact the Adoption Officer at admin@aaru.org.uk, who will reply as soon as possible. All potential adoptions need a successful homecheck. Cats are not rehomed on or near busy roads, unless indoor-only. With no premises, animals are fostered in volunteers’ homes. The charity does not cover healthy strays/unwanted pets, but helps neglected, injured and vulnerable animals and birds. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should leave a detailed message on 0115-9321555. For all rescued animals needing homes, see www.animalaccident.org.uk.

What To Do In A Veterinary Emergency Firstly - Don’t Panic! If you have any concerns about your pet’s health, you should always call your vet for advice. All vets provide emergency cover 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. This cover is either provided by a dedicated emergency hospital or by the practice themselves. Listen carefully to the message on the practice phone and/or tell the duty vet or nurse your concerns. Make sure you have the vets phone number stored on your phone or kept in an easy to find place. Make sure you know the location and address of the clinic.

If they are bleeding try to apply pressure or a bandage to the wound. If you think they may have been poisoned or have eaten something please bring any information that may help the vet with you such as pill boxes. If they have passed diarrhoea or urine - try to collect a sample for the vet. Some conditions like bloat, breathlessness or collapse can be life threatening and prompt action may save the life of your loved one. If you are not sure what to do then speak to the vet and they will advise you as to what is best thing to do.

Secondly - Get your pet to the clinic promptly. It is usually quickest and safest to transport your pet to the surgery to be treated - that is where we have our staff, equipment and medicines ready to be used. If your pet is in pain or shock they may try to bite or scratch! Treat them gently and possibly use a towel to wrap them up in.

possible. You can find details of gritting routes in our county on the Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottingham City Council web sites.

The force have a number of advice guides to ensure you, your family and your home is best prepared for this predicted weather.

Protect your home in winter As the nights get darker earlier leave a light on inside your home. (Remember to choose low energy lamps.) Use a timer switch: These operate the lights as it starts to get dark. Change the times that the lights come on to simulate an occupied home. Make sure your front door is well lit: Use dusk to dawn lighting that automatically comes on as it gets dark. Keep your house secure: Make sure you keep your doors and windows locked at all times.

Keep warm, keep well If you are over 65 or have a health condition or reduced mobility, you should ideally heat your home to at least 18°C. It is also a good idea to try to keep your bedroom at this temperature throughout the night if possible. Please talk to older relatives, neighbours and friends to ensure they are prepared for the winter. When travelling - be prepared Be prepared by having an emergency kit in your vehicle, which should include ice-scraper, de-icer, warm clothes and blankets, torch, boots, first aid kit, jump leads, a spade, a road atlas and sunglasses (for the winter glare). Check the forecast for the day. The morning trip to work might be clear skies and frost, but the changeable British weather means those clouds can roll in and the next thing you know you’re driving home in snow. Be ready for all eventualities. Plan your journey • Check weather and travel conditions before and during your journey and make sure you leave extra time to clear your windscreen properly before setting off.

Going on holiday • Suspend any deliveries, such as milk and newspapers • Ask a friend or neighbour to keep an eye on your property • Try to make your home look occupied while you are not there by using timer switches on lamps or your radio Be a good neighbour If you see anyone acting suspiciously in your neighbourhood, call the police on 101 or, in an emergency, 999. To find out more about the force’s winter advice guide please visit: www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/ advice/winter-safety

• Try to stick to main roads that have been gritted, wherever

It’s Never Too Late to Change Career by Helen Jones

“A comfort zone is a beautiful place but nothing ever grows there” - Unknown

Not so long ago being 50 years old was considered to be on the slippery slope to old age and genteel retirement. Today that notion is outdated and somewhat ridiculous. There are few restrictions these days to making major changes in late middle age – and these don’t include taking off abroad a la Shirley Valentine (although some may find this very appealing). The population in the UK is getting older with 18% aged 65 and over and 2.4% aged 85 and over and a large number of people are continuing to work out of choice way beyond retirement age. Here at Solos we recently placed a 71 year old lady into work because she was bored at home. She had a wealth of experience to offer our client and also a wonderful work ethic. The pressures of previous years can reduce or disappear after a certain age and the need to earn lessen. This is the time to maybe re-evaluate not what you have been doing professionally but what appeals to you. Let’s be honest the opportunities available today compared to when I first entered the workplace in the 80s has changed beyond recognition. We are truly living in the digital age and the scope of job offerings in this sector alone has exploded over the past twenty years. Free or low cost training programmes which are available (search The Princes Trust or Google) can bring you bang up to date with your skills. However the biggest benefit that maturity and hindsight brings is self-awareness. You know what you’re good at and you also know what you enjoy. And many people in middle age are now turning to what they enjoy for their income. If you’re creative there are so many ways to promote and sell your products online such as Instagram/Etsy/Shpock. Achieving this change wouldn’t be stress free initially – so make sure you talk to your family and friends and gain their support for your ideas. Me? I’m still waiting for the right moment to buy 100 acres in order to set up a dog rescue….

30 Redhill Road, Arnold

Just answer the following.....

The Lord of Milan Herbert Kilpin was born in 1870, above a butcher’s shop, 191 Mansfield Road (pictured above). Kilpin’s day job was as a lace maker in the Adams building, but he was always a big fan of football. Kilpin played for two amateur clubs, Notts Olympic and a church team called Saint Andrews on the Forest Recreation Ground. Whilst working in the Adams building, Kilpin became good friends with an Italian man called Edoardo Bosio, who offered him a job in Turin which he accepted. In 1899 Kilpin moved to Milan where he met with a group of friends in a bar and they formed Milan Football and Cricket Club. Their first match was in January 1900 with Kilpin as the owner, manager, player and later captain. Kilpin’s Milan team won the first Italian football league three times and over the next few decades would become one of the biggest and most successful football clubs in the world. Robert Nier has written a book about Kilpin called The Lord of Milan talking more about his early life in Nottingham. “The Lord of Milan” is available in all good book stores, including the Nottingham Tourism Centre.

Tanya About Town W

elcome to my new page in ng magazines where I will be giving you my pick of the upcoming events in Nottingham. In the world of food and drink, the latter part of the 2017 saw Oktoberfest return to the Forest Recreation Ground. For five days, a giant blue and white tent, big enough to hold 2,000 people, played host to authentic German beer, food and music, all carefully selected to guarantee an authentic experience. The beer was specially brewed in a 200-year-old brewery in Bavaria and transported to Nottingham in a colossal beer tanker holding 23 thousand litres - this probably went some way toward contributing to the party atmosphere! If you can’t wait until next October, pay a visit to the Bierkeller on Friar Lane and enjoy the German experience all year round. Whilst we're on the subject of food, as we look ahead to 2018, foodies from across the region can look forward to a mouth-watering 12 months. Renowned Nottingham restaurant Hart’s launch a year of celebrations, with some very special events planned, to mark a milestone 20th birthday. 30 January - 3 February sees the heart warming musical Son of a Preacher Man visit the Theatre Royal, whilst 14 March - 7 April welcomes the acclaimed play, War Horse. The tour coincides with the Centenary commemorations of the First World War. Stepping further back in time, the Vikings are in Nottingham until 4th March at Lakeside Arts. The Rediscover the Legend is a collaboration between the British Museum and York Museums Trust and will feature Viking and Anglo Saxon artefacts, including recent finds.

Celebrate Nottingham's own history with the Robin Hood Pageant on 10-11 March. Join Robin Hood and co. in this immersive experience in the grounds of Nottingham Castle. Someone else to put Nottingham on the map is our own Jake Bugg. The award winning Clifton musician comes home on 2 March to play the Royal Concert Hall. Lovers of live music can also look forward to one of Britain's best live bands, Stereophonics, as they play the Motorpoint Arena on 26 February. Erasure bring 32 years of golden songwriting to the Royal Concert Hall on 12 February. Strictly fever hits the city on 6-7 February as the live tour waltzes into the Motorpoint Arena, and Anton and Erin take us from Broadway to Hollywood there on 1 February. Finally, comedy brightens the winter evenings as Jason Manford brings his Muddle Class show to the Theatre Royal on 16 February and Bill Bailey shares the general shenanigans of twenty years as a comedian with his Larks in Transit show at the Royal Concert Hall on 28 February -1 March. Nottingham Playhouse – 0115 941 9419 Theatre Royal/Royal Concert Hall – 0115 838 4510 Lakeside Arts – 0115 846 777 Motorpoint Arena – 0843 373 3000

A

n indulgent Mexican Cantina has opened its second restaurant, this time on Broad Street, Nottingham bringing with it an abundance of Mexican attitude. Mexico meets the Midlands with the launch of El Capo. Committed to serving bold Mexican cuisine with devilish South American flair. El Capo is spread across two floors; we were seated in the cantina on the ground floor, the decor is very atmospheric and this theme continues upstairs in the tequila bar, which is home to a vast range of tequila, mezcal and cocktail options. It is an amazing building and El Capo has really made the most of it. The restaurant promises ‘down right dirty but oh so good’ burritos, a long list of punchy tacos, authentic Mexican padron peppers, prawns, burgers that make you go ooh – and of course there’s nachos laden with guacamole. Not forgetting the Macho Mucho Menu – where bigger really is better – a 2ft long burrito made for 6 but they’ve seen lone wolves take it solo and the Big Boy Chilli Burger which comes with its own planning permission! We opted to share a few starters. Jalapeno poppers, chips and dips, and our absolute favourite, pan fried chorizo. For our mains we had pulled beef burrito, burrito bowl (without the tortilla) with spicy chicken, chicken quesadillas and slow roasted pork enchiladas. Alongside, we obviously had to have sides of cheesy chilli fries and El Capo’s slaw, suffice to say a doggy bag was required. You can select the sauce to suit your palette. The peach jalapeno salsa was just the right side of hot and really complemented the dishes.

Desserts were a MUST! It was churros and more churros!! (All in the name of research, of course.) Some came with chocolate sauce and some in an indulgent sundae that included a delicious coconut ice cream. Take it from us, they were spot on. El Capo has different offers and deals on all through the week; Sunday Service Big Sharing Boards provide the ultimate hangover cure; Steak Out Monday gives you premium steak for two with sides and wine (perfect for steak loving romantics); Taco Tuesday, all tacos are £1 all night long and Wing-It Wednesday where wings are 50p all night, perfect with a beer or two. Happy hour is every day from 4pm-7pm and all night every Thursday. Overall, El Capo is a great option for those that like tasty Mexican food served in a friendly cantina style setting with a massive choice of drinks!!

WIN £50 MEAL Just answer the following question: What day of the week are Taco’s £1 all night?

Welcome to the new year! Well, the festive season is over and it’s time to take stock. Most of us start the new year with good intentions, possibly a couple of resolutions and almost certainly an expanded waistline after the excesses of Christmas feasting! New Year’s resolutions have been part of many cultures (particularly but not exclusively in the western hemisphere) and religions. The Babylonians made promises to their gods at the start of each year, promising to pay their debts and return borrowed objects; the Romans began each year with promises to the god Janus (after whom January is named), in the medieval era, Knights would take the “peacock vow” (placing their hands on a roasted peacock) to re-affirm their commitment to chivalry - I quite fancy seeing that one make a return!

Like many people, I tend to crave fresh salads and light foods after the festive period, but it’s too early for home-grown lettuce, tomatoes and radish, and with the cold, snowy, wet and windy weather we’re probably more likely to reach for comfort foods, warming casseroles, deep-filled pies, piles of pasta and hearty soups. But if you’re ready for some lighter dishes, that taste good and provide much needed nutrients to replace those depleted by festive excess, I’ve picked out a few very simple recipes to see you through to the spring, even if your New Year resolutions don’t last quite that long…

The Mayor of Gedling, Cllr Viv McCrossen, cooked and served food for 1,000 people at the annual Good Shepherd Christmas Fair back in November last year. The Christmas Fair helped to raise money for urgent repairs at The Church of the Good Shepherd. The fair raised an amazing £7300 which was 55% more than the previous year. Mayor of Gedling, Cllr McCrossen said: “I do this every year and it’s a lovely community event that gets local people together for an important cause and everybody is welcome. I’ll be swapping the normal mayoral duties for a day-long stint in a hot kitchen so make sure you come along, try my cooking and raise some money for our beautiful church.” Cllr McCrossen has been a lifelong parishioner of the Good Shepherd and has helped throughout the decades, including establishing the scout group at the Church.

With the New Year celebrations well out of the way, we now have Easter fast approaching. The shops are already crammed with chocolate eggs! Here at Strength & Physique we have a radical idea... Instead of giving something up for lent why not try taking up a new healthy fitness habit for 40 days?

GET FIT IN 40 DAYS! Having a full 40 days is a great way to introduce a new health or fitness goal and there’s a good chance after 40 days it will become a habit rather than a fad. If you have missed the New Year, new me window then don’t worry, we’re here to help. It’s common for us to give up a particular food for lent either as a personal challenge or for religious reasons. Why not introduce a new fitness habit to help with positive change instead? We think it’s a great idea. Rather than depriving yourself you are adding something amazing and rewarding to your life. Starting off with something as simple as a daily walk if you aren’t regularly active, all the way up to fitness challenges produced by companies like us to help you make a change at whatever level of fitness you are at. We find that most people respond positively to either a time frame challenge or an advent style count down, so get thinking about what would work for you. We can all make positive changes through fitness in some way, shape or form and if you stick to it from day 1, you should find that by day 40 you will want to continue with your new journey and see where this path takes you. Taking the 40 day challenge is a great way to meet new people, take you out of a negative environment if you feel stuck, improve your quality of life and hopefully have great fun doing something different.

Email: info@strengthyphysique.co.uk Website: www.strengthphysique.co.uk

Beginners Start with a simple walk for 30-60 minutes a day, just become a little more active. If you have a fitness tracker maybe aim for 10,000 steps a day. If this is easy, aim for 15,000. Intermediate If walking is too easy now, try jogging – maybe aim for 5k at the end of the challenge. Get an app for your phone to help. Join a running group or if financially possible, join a local fitness club. Let the motivation of others around you lift you to new heights. Experienced If you struggle to find new ways to challenge yourself, why not look to a professional for help? Pushing yourself to achieve something that seemed impossible only a few months ago can become a reality with the help of a professional coach. Maybe you are entering a competition, working towards a title or entering a massive fitness challenge. You can become that athlete!

Make a positive change, get fit in 40 days!

TAROSCOPES Air signs- Libra, Aquarius, Gemini (Nine of Cups, The Sun, Three of Cups) It’s all coming up roses for you! A wish-come-true actually comes true, turns out better than you thought, and everyone is beyond happy for you. How often does life bring you these kinds of riches? Not often, I know, so be gracious, generous and grateful about all this wonderful luck and opportunity. Share what you can, spread the goodwill about. And, most importantly, ENJOY this magical time.

Fire signs- Leo, Aries, Sagittarius

Earth signs- Capricorn, Virgo, Taurus

(The Hierophant, The Magician, Ace of Coins) Playing the system pays off You’re a pragmatic realist, and you know which battles are worth fighting, vs which ones are all too hard, and would prove a hollow victory anyway. A choice you recently made about playing the system, in some way, rather than fighting it pays off. Big time. Recognition and reward are due, and you sense this might be the way to go in future, too.

Water signs- Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio

(Three of Wands, Ace of Cups, Four of Wands)

(Six of Wands, Six of Coins, Page of Swords)

You’ve got momentum now- so keep going.

The best thing for you to do this month is to consider the needs of those close to you, or the things which matter to you, and give generously to them. Get involved. Make a difference. This selfless behaviour will make you feel good, and build up points in the Karma Bank that will pay back nicely later down the line.

Your confidence in your current direction is growing, others are recognising this and responding by providing more support, ideas and energy. Keep it up, because the momentum is building wonderfully. A new opportunity, representing a heartfelt passion, will soon arrive. Seize it with both hands. Life is good.

Pay attention to others and get involved.

Review: e u g a e L e Justic eser ve? D e W e ic t s The Ju After a more than rocky start to the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), 2017 shaped up to be the cinematic universe’s best yet. Rising from the critical ashes left in the aftermath of Batman Vs Superman (BvS) and Suicide Squad, this year’s empowering Wonder Woman received glowing reviews. Hoping to continue this winning streak, DC united their most iconic, speediest and deepvoiced heroes to create a movie that fans have been begging to get for years. Don’t screw it up DC. But what foe warrants the uniting of the fearsome Batman of Gotham, the Amazonian demi-god Wonder Woman, the fastest man alive, the Flash, the king of the sea, Aquaman and the half-man half-robot Cyborg? A humongous alien calling himself a “New God,” that’s what. And when they do clash, hot-damn it’s epic. Add onto the already frantic and heart raising action this universe displays, the added pleasure of seeing the titans of the DC universe teaming up on the big screen for the first time, and you have an apocalyptically good time on your hands. And that is really what this movie excels at, it’s fun. Is the plot all that deep? Hell no. The narrative rarely rises above: ‘stop bad-guy from getting object, punch bad-guy in face, look cool doing it’. But when the character interactions are this good and interesting to see develop, a paddling pooldeep plot can be excused, mostly. Gal Gadot, as always, is the perfect Wonder Woman. Here Gadot is allowed to explore a more experienced Diana who is slowly getting used to saving the world again. Newcomer, Cyborg, Ray Fisher, is not only a dynamic addition to the team, but is also by far one of the coolest members. A flat note of the movie was DC favourite Batman, Ben Affleck. After the backlash of how dark and brooding Batfleck was in BvS, it feels like the universe took the criticism to heart a bit too much. Cracking jokes and smiling more than Aquaman does, this dark knight doesn’t really feel like Batman anymore. Along with him being pretty

useless in the epic battles and you have a character that doesn’t really work and was just added in because it’s the Justice League, and Batman is always in the Justice League. This is painful to say, but Ezra Miller’s Flash is another broken cog. His off-beat weird facial expressions and not-so-funny jokes get tiresome by the mid-way point, and down-right annoying by the end. Justice League isn’t a mind-blowing, life-altering experience, but it isn’t the abomination that many people called Suicide Squad either. It is a fun as hell, frantic and entertaining trip through spectacular earth-shattering battles with some of your favourite superheroes who, for the most part, have been brought to life in an equally spectacular way. Justice League = 7/10 © Sam Burton (aged 20)

Retro Cinema with a difference Win

Ever wanted to show your kids what ‘things were like back in my day’? This retro cinema offers a nostalgic trip for those of us lucky enough to remember the good old days of velvet seats and curtained screens. I can hear you humming the Pearl and Dean tune now! The Savoy, on Derby Road, is the only surviving pre-Second Word War cinema left in Nottingham out of 52! This iconic building was built by the architect Reginald Cooper in the art –deco style with a curved front and opened its doors for the first time on 7th Nov 1935 by Lenton Picture House Ltd, a consortium of local business men. It started its early days with just one screen and has definitely withstood the test of time now being home to 4 screens. The cinema is very well managed and constantly being updated, screen 4 has just been refurbished. Being cared for like this the cinema will be around for many years to come and at only £19 for a family ticket* it is well worth a visit.

As well as offering the latest movies the Savoy streams live events such as The Royal Shakespeare Company productions and National Theatre Live. Savoy are great for children’s birthday parties too, offering a private screening of a blockbuster film of your choice for as little as £150 for up to 30 children and 8 adults, 2 free cinema tickets for the birthday girl or boy and use of the party room immediately after the film. On top of all this the Savoy is a fully licensed wedding venue! That’s right you can hire the venue for your big day. To find out more info, what’s on and book tickets visit:

www.savoyonline.co.uk or call 0115 947 5812 The Savoy, 233 Derby Road, Nottingham, NG7 1QN

Nottingham Captivated By Strangers Project Photographer and Nottingham Trent University Lecturer Crash Taylor has spent the last 12 months taking photos of strangers in Nottingham.

stylish characters of Nottingham. “I love shooting pictures in the city centre, it is so vibrant and a massive melting pot of visually cool people.

The project has become an instant hit having been featured in the Nottingham Post, Notts TV, BBC Nottingham and numerous national photography magazines. There is a website, Facebook page and an Instagram feed, which just reached over 2000 followers.

“I select people who I find visually cool and interesting. That could be anyone but I let my eyes guide me. I must be doing something right as nine out of ten say yes to a photo.”

“I wish for a peaceful and happy life.” “I wish to time travel and go back and see David Bowie live in concert.”

Crash Taylor is a full time property photographer for fhp living but when not taking photos of homes, he is on the streets capturing portraits of visually inspiring people and asking them to make a wish. He says he started the project to break out of his comfort zone and meet strangers, to find out what people wish for in today’s urban society. He added: “I have taken photos in Los Angeles, New York, Helsinki, Spain, Italy, Hawaii and many other places and nothing compares to the

Crash Taylor asks each one to give him a single wish – but unusually does not take their names. “I plan to photograph 500”, he said. “When the project is complete, I plan on having an exhibition in the city centre and a book launch with all proceeds going to the charity, Save the Children.” “Photography is my passion and my wife thinks I should go to rehab for it. It will never happen, I enjoy the addiction.”

Crash also teaches street portrait workshops. The next one is Saturday, February 10th. Join him on the streets and shoot strangers with expert tuition. The Mystery That Is Ethel by Bob Massey

Having now completed and published Volume 3 of “Snippets from History” and seen it off to MSR News in Arnold, The Bookcase in Lowdham, Five Leaves Bookshop in Nottingham and of course to NG Mags offices for sale, I have now turned my attention to my next project, one that has been awaiting more attention for some time. Those of you who have attended my local history courses over the years know that no matter what the subject matter regarding Arnolds past, two names just keep raising their heads and it has become somewhat of a contest to see how long it would be before I mentioned them. They are of course, Rev. Holcome and William Herbert Higgingbottom. Both these men had a massive impact on Arnold in different ways. My new project involves William Higginbottom and the rest of this very influential family. I have been researching local history for some years now and pride myself on knowing some of the tricks to dig up information. But this time I have met my biggest challenge. Anthony Higginbottom came to Arnold in 1868 with his wife Elizabeth and young son William. During their years in Arnold the Higginbottoms had five more children, of which Ethel was the 4th, the youngest daughter born in 1883. It is not known where she went to school, there is no record, but the most likely was her father Anthony’s British School, at least during her formative years.

There are photographs of the school in this era but as the pupils are not identified and as we have no photos at all of Ethel she may or may not be on some of them. Junior girls were transferred from the British School to the High Street Girls School in 1883 so it’s also probable that Ethel went there to finish her education, but again there is no record. There is even less known about Ethel after leaving school. She seems to have been a very private person. No details of what she did for a living or in fact any mention of her life has come to light. She did not appear to have been involved in any high level events, certainly none worth mentioning in the newspapers, she also does not appear to have been in any kind of trouble. Ethel appears quite an enigma. Ethel did not marry and lived all her life at the Higginbottom Cottage on Hallams Lane where she had been born and brought up as a child. She had a short life and it would appear an uneventful one. She died on 4 November 1925 aged just 42. After her funeral, Ethel was buried in grave 675, one of the family graves at Redhill Cemetery, Arnold which she now shares with her sister Maud, mother Elizabeth and father Anthony. Like Maude, Ethel’s name is not recorded on the gravestone, which only carries the names of her father and mother. So all we know of her life is her birthday, when she died and where she lived. This has me at a loss. Does anyone out there know anything that would help solve the mystery of Ethel? If so, please get in touch.

I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG5 magazine.

ARNOLD SWIMMING CLUB NEWS

New Year, New Records to Break In 2017 Arnold SC swam 102 competitions, resulting in 574,075 metres of swimming, achieving 2657 Personal Best Times and 248 Club Records broken. Arnold begins the new year with 47 Arnold swimmers entered to compete against the best swimmers in the county at the ASA county championships. Congratulations to all who qualified and let’s see if we can break more records in 2018.

Arnold Swimmers Gala Successes Arena League This is the top league that Arnold competes in as a team and they have completed an excellent campaign. The 11th November saw Arnold head to Worcester to compete in the 2nd round. They swam hard finishing second out of the six teams on the night. Swimmers between them achieved 11 first places, 8pbs and 8 club records. Following this just before Christmas swimmers competed in the final round of the arena league. Arnold finished 4th in the finals, this gave them 4th position overall in the league. Watch this space for information regarding whether this was enough to be promoted up in the league. A massive thankyou to all swimmers, parents, and especially Coaches who made this possible. Notts ASA Winter Festive Frenzy Congratulations to swimmers Honey Baxendale, Kyran Cubit, Ben Cuthill, Max Davies, Liam Dawson, Lily Jackson-Oates, Eli Myers, Lily Paget, Albie Stapleton, Amaia Steele, Daniel Walker, and Eleanor Watson for their success at the festive frenzy. T H E I M P O R TA N C E O F C R E AT I V I T Y I N C H I L D R E N “The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.” – Albert Einstein

I

ntelligence is creativity, our ability to imagine things other than how they are. We are born creative, telling stories about imaginary friends and making fictional worlds with toys. Yet how many of us retain this level of intelligence as we age? Staying creative is a lot like staying fit – do it regularly, in a way that is fun to you, and it remains easy. Moreover, creativity is a transferable skill and benefits all fields of study, arts or STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths). Creative scientists, engineers, farmers, chefs, parents etc... are exactly what the world needs more of. So, what's the best way to help kids stay imaginative? It's easier to understand if we first consider natural learning in mammals. Natural learning is observe, practice, imitate, master. Children are hardwired to copy the behaviour in the same way that baby tigers or elephants are.

Which means that the best way to help our children use their imaginations is to show how much we love using ours; we must be what we want our children to be. We can be as silly as we like with giggly games, tell tall tales with actions, paint pictures, recite our own funny poems. We can stop on the street to admire a flower or describe the rain as if the drops are liquid happiness tickling the flowers. Just like any baby mammal, after a period of observation, the child will begin to imitate and join in, safe in the knowledge that this kind of play is accepted and valued. Silliness can soon become part of a fun family life and playtime is bonding time. It's worth knowing that resilient kids have at least one person in their life who is irrationally crazy about them, whom they trust, love and are relaxed with. This kind of creative play is awesome for helping kids feel loved. Finally, we have an educational reason to have fun!

Alex Potters to School

W

ith one hand on each ear, Dad steers Alex down the street toward school. Both smile so widely that passersby grin too, their happiness spreading like the fragrance of flowers. With a tug to his right ear, Alex goes right, his red wellingtons splashing into spring puddles. Feeling his ears pulled forwards, Alex goes faster, the two of them jiggling along like a runaway train. With a backwards tug Alex slows. They zig-zag and circle twice around a lamp-post before stopping to greet Miggles the kitten. Miggles arches her back into Alex's hand, her fur feeling soft under his palm. She pads her paws up and down, as if her joy is simply too great for her to stay still. Miggles meows in short bursts, like cat-talk. Dad laughs, “Miggles is like you, Alex. She needs to move and make noise! How about a singing game until we get to school?” Alex stands up, head nodding, “You first! Sing 'I'm a little tea-pot' in the style of Hagrid.”

Dad puffs out his chest and strokes an imaginary beard. He nods as if his words carry great meaning, eye-brows raised and eyes bright. “Yeh know wha', Alex? If yeh can carry a song, it's good ter sing righ' loud an' this is a good'un tur-boot. I is a li-le tea-po' shor' an' stou, lif' me up an' pour me ou,'” Dad waves at Mrs Nesbit, the headteacher, before making his handle and spout. Alex giggles. Still in full Hadgrid-mode, Dad adds, “No, I should not 'ave dun tha.'” Dad puts on his faux-serious face. “Right, let's check everything works.” He tweaks Alex's nose and gives orders like an army general. “Hop on the spot. Flap your arms. Wiggle your bum. Stick out your tongue.” As Alex complies, his smile grows wider, knowing what comes next. “Oh!” says Dad, eyes bright and face full of mirth, “what a naughty child. Did you see that? He stuck out his tongue!” With a hug and a hair ruffle, Alex runs to class.

Gedling Southbank Athletic U10s had been looking for a sponsor. £124k For New Play Area

Friends of Arnot Hill Park working alongside Gedling Borough Council. A further £74,000 of funding will come from planning obligations of local developers, known as section 106 agreements. The payments are part of a property developer’s obligation to provide a financial contribution where there is development that could lead to the loss of open space.

One of Arnold’s most well-known and wellused play parks is to have a £124,000 refurbishment. Arnot Hill Park play area will be improved thanks to funding from WREN, a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community conservation, and from property developer contributions. WREN will be providing £50,000 towards improving the park. The funding was granted thanks to a joint bid from volunteers from the

Work is expected to begin in April 2018 and consultation has already begun with local primary schools and the Friends of Arnot Hill Park about what the new play area will look like. Cllr David Ellis, Chair of the Friends of Arnot Hill Park, said: “The play area at Arnot Hill Park is well-used and well-loved by the children of Arnold. Unfortunately it is showing its age. The Friends of Arnot Hill Park are keen to see these improvements happen and are grateful to the Council for earmarking s106 money and to WREN for its grant. We can’t wait for the refurbished play area to open.”

PLASTIC is FANTASTIC How to – or is it? become Plastic Clever in 2018 Plastic pollution is becoming one of the biggest man-made threats of the • When buying a drink modern world, and at the rate the in a cafe or pub, say “No issue is growing, us kids (and our kids’ kids) are going to have to pick straw please!” and reduce up one environmental clean-up the amount of single-use bill in the future. plastic straws you use

Did you know? • Over the last 10 years humans have produced more plastic than during the last century. • Around 60% of this is single-use - used once and then thrown away, and about a truck‛s worth of plastic enters the world's oceans every single minute. • This contributes to the deaths of 1 million seabirds and 100,000 sea mammals every year, and it‛s estimated that by the year 2050 there‛ll be more plastic in the oceans than fish.

But we’re not bitter or full of doom and gloom. No, instead we are hopeful and optimistic that we can avert this crisis if we all do our bit and make a positive impact in 2018. So, we are asking the people of Arnold to join us in the fight against plastic pollution and to make becoming ‘Plastic Clever’ one of their New Year’s Resolution for the coming year.

• Carry a refillable coffee cup around with you so you don‛t have to use a non-recyclable cup and lid again. • Use a refillable water bottle and get free fill ups from cafes and restaurants - it will save you a lot of money and it will cut down the amount of single-use plastic bottles you use. • Carry a bag for life and save money by not using single-use plastic bags.

By the way, Plastic Clever doesn’t mean Plastic Free that is actually very difficult Taking these steps and making to achieve. Becoming Plastic some small changes may not Clever is very simple and is all seem like much, but if every about you reducing the BIG 4 one of us made these simple single-use plastic polluters (bags, commitments, together this cups + lids, straws and bottles). will lead to a huge positive As well as helping the environment, impact. it will probably save you a fair bit of money too.

WE WANT YOU! Plastic Clever Cafes and Businesses

Cafes, organisations and businesses are often responsible for using and distributing vast amounts of single-use plastic items: the BIG 4 plus plastic cutlery. But it doesn’t have to be this way! We’d like to work with and help as many local Arnold companies as possible in 2018 to help them achieve and celebrate a Plastic Clever status. See www.BePlasticClever.co.uk for more details. THE TEETOTAL TALE J

anuary arrives every year, grey and gloomy. For me it is the worst month of the year to start any good intentions. With a fridge full of cheese and mountains of chocolate it would be wasteful (and emotionally risky) to suddenly enter a month of deprivation. So with this in mind I decided to challenge myself to a month off the booze back in November. A preChristmas cleanse if you will. I wouldn’t class myself as a heavy drinker although Public Health England** might. They reckon that more than 10 million of us exceed the recommended weekly units. It’s easily done. A large glass of wine (my favourite tipple) is a third of a bottle! My other half agreed to join my challenge and so it was with a real sense of trepidation (and a heap of scepticism from friends and family) that we downed our last drink(s) on Halloween. Experts believe that 30 days without a drink can undo the damage drinking can do to our bodies. According to Dr. Nicki Nance*, an American doctor, a 30 day break can improve our long-term drinking habits. Well, I thought, let’s see shall we... I have to admit I did find it hard. A winter walk with the dogs, ending in a pub – nope. Cooking at the weekend, accompanied by a glass of something fizzy – nope. Sitting down to watch a film at the end of the day with a G & T – forget it! Sadly, it became apparent that booze is intrinsic to my life and I needed something to replace it. So I went out and bought some Horlicks (yes, really). That didn’t work. So I went out and bought half a ton of expensive chocolate biscuits. That helped...a bit. To boost morale I googled “booze free month” and reeled off all the benefits we should have been experiencing. Brighter skin, better sleep, weight loss, happier, healthier etcetera, etcetera, etcetera... My skin looked no different if I am honest, yes I did sleep better but eating my own bodyweight in chocolate bikkies meant I gained weight therefore I did not feel happier or healthier!!! The biggest change we noticed was in our pocket. We were about £50 a week better off which was nice.

Doing this challenge as a couple undoubtedly made it easier. When one of us had a weak moment, the other would mock and scoff at the lack of will power, and this made us even more determined not to cave in, although I have to admit that a slight cough had me reaching for the Covonia Night Time (7% alcohol) which felt so wrong it felt right! Another unexpected side effect experienced by my other half was the phantom hangover (apparently a real thing). So he would wake up on Saturday morning feeling awful and then remember he hadn’t had a drink and it was therefore physically impossible for him to be feeling so rotton. Weird. Even more weird was the fact that I wasn’t desperate for a drink and when I finally poured myself a small glass of wine on December 1st, it didn’t fill me with joy and I didn’t even enjoy the taste! To be fair I did have a second glass, (just to be sure!) but I didn’t get the buzz from it I was hoping for. It’s now mid-January and I have to admit that Dr Nance was right. I am not drinking anywhere near the amount I used to. My body appears to have come to its senses and re-set itself. It now tells me to stop (apart from New Years Eve when it all went horribly wrong!). Don’t get me wrong, I could never be teetotal but over Christmas the spirits went untouched and I even offered to drive on Christmas Day without sulking (unheard of). I am now a more “mindful” drinker according to experts. Enjoying every sip and appreciating it. The other half, on the other hand, has just gone straight back to his old ways, and vowed never to put himself through such a miserable month again! © Ali Wale References: * Dr Nicki Nance, Assistant Professor of Psychology, Beacon College, Leesburg, Florida **Public Health England – Health matters: harmful drinking and alcohol dependence, 2016
