TAROSCOPES Air signs- Libra, Aquarius, Gemini

Earth signs- Capricorn, Virgo, Taurus

(Three of Coins, The Magician, Six of Wands)

(Queen of Swords, The Chariot, Eight of Swords)

Onwards, upwards. Your hard work and talent is being recognised by those who are in a position to help you progress. Take the favour / leg up / promotion they offer with full confidence. You’re going to go further faster, with the support of others, than you currently think is possible.

Open up. A tough situation is going to resolve very soon, and it’s all down to the shrewd, focussed moves you make. It may require undertaking a journey of some kind (physical or emotional), a change of landscape from your usual scene. New views provoke new ideas, and the insight you need to make a big difference.

Fire signs- Leo, Aries, Sagittarius

Water signs- Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio

(Ten of Cups, Knight of Wands, Nine of Cups)

(Nine of Wands, Six of Cups, Knight of Cups)

Love is in the air.

A blast from the past.

Whatever relationship status you’re at, expect it to go up a notch. Single to flirting, flirting to courting, courting to settling down etc. Your best hopes and expectations in love can be fulfilled this month ahead. Aim high, share your desires, be led by hope, not fear. Love is in the air…

Someone, or something, you held great affection for long ago is going to return to your life- with a bang! It may all prove to be so nostalgic, magical and joyous that it actually causes you to question what you’ve been doing with your life this far… Enjoy the reunion, but know that where you’re at is all good too.

pets Help Homeless Animals Near You

Whilst you may be cosy indoors at the moment, you can help homeless animals during these cold, winter months find shelter in a cosy home too! Nottingham area charity, Animal Accident Rescue Unit, urgently needs phone operators and fosterers. For phone operators this amounts to just a few hours weekly in your own home. This varied role means taking calls about animals in need, then relaying accurate details to relevant fellow volunteers. The service can really make the difference between suffering or being saved for injured and vulnerable birds and animals. Fosterers look after animals in their own homes, with full support from the charity and this is a most rewarding role in helping animals recover. ‘Useful’, ‘Rewarding’ and ‘Worthwhile’ are how Animal Accident Rescue Unit volunteers describe their ‘jobs’. To find out more either email: admin@aaru.org.uk, or call 0115-9321555, and leave a message with your contact details. The volunteer coordinator will return your call as promptly as possible. You can also use this number and email for details on the lovely animals still waiting for homes - who are shown on www. animalaccident.org.uk, and ‘Animal Accident Rescue Unit’ on Facebook.

Name a Puppy and Change a Life

With Guide Dog’s Name a Puppy scheme, your workplace, club or community group could choose a name for a guide dog puppy and sponsor them through their first year of training. Your support will set them off on their training journey to become a fully-fledged guide dog, helping a person who has lost their sight to regain their independence. As well as receiving ‘pupdates’ on your puppy’s progress through socialisation training, you will receive photographs and even get to meet your puppy. A young person’s version of Name a Puppy is also available for schools and youth groups to take part in. Community Fundraiser, Jane Shelley says: “Our life-changing guide dog partnerships are only made possible through the support of local businesses, schools, community groups and individuals. With the lifetime cost of each guide dog partnership, from birth to retirement, now over £55,000 we simply could not provide our services without the support of the local community.” Guide Dogs are inviting businesses, schools, groups and individuals to get in touch to find out more about their services and the Name a Puppy scheme. If you would like more information on how to get involved contact Nottingham Mobility Team on 0345 1430221 or via nottingham@guidedogs.org.uk

Walks With Emily & Friends Strelley Village lies just a few miles from the hustle and bustle of Nottingham city centre. Not to be confused with Strelley, which lies just across the main road, Strelley Village is a quaint area with lovely footpaths and home to Strelley Hall.

walk down this path you will eventually reach the M1 motorway, and go through a tunnel underneath. At this point, follow the path round to the left and keep to this path until you reach a main road. At this point there is a short walk up the road, so dogs will need to be kept on a short lead. Follow this road up (Dead Lane) being careful to watch for oncoming traffic as this small section doesn’t have a path. At the top of the hill, turn right down Robinettes Lane (past the farm shop). Keep walking down this lane for a short while until you see a footpath sign and a metal gate on the right (signposted to Strelley).

Walk distance: 4 miles Difficulty: Easy- all on the flat Pub stop: The Broad Oak - Strelley Village (just down from start and end point) Starting point: Lay by off Main Street, Strelley Village For this route, park up at the lay by just off Main Road. This is free - if it is full, try the Broad Oak pub (although you will have to pay to park here). From where you have parked, turn left up the bridleway. Continue down this path as it bends round until you reach a fork. Instead of continuing up, follow the path round to the right continuing across fields with a wooded area on your right. Keep following the path down until you reach a cross roads - there should be a green sign telling you where all the footpaths go, turn right following the footpath towards Cossall. As you

Take this turning and walk across the fields following the footpath signs and going through several gates. Eventually you will come to another road (more like a farm track). Continue up until you reach a T-junction, and here turn right. Walk along the road passing over the M1 motorway, until you can see Strelley Hall in the distance. When you have crossed over the footbridge, you will be back in Strelley Village. Turn right and walk back down the road to your car. The Rock ’n’ Soul Singers

The Christmas season was a busy one for the Rock’n’Soul Singers. Our charity collections at various events, plus funds raised at our sell-out Christmas Concert, made a good beginning to our year singing in aid of the YOUNG MiNDS charity. Thank you to all who generously supported us in raising over £600 so far! On Saturday March 23rd 2019 we will be singing at a Craft Fayre being held at Our Lady of Good Counsel church, 280 Nottingham Road, Eastwood, NG16 2AQ. Doors open at 10am until 3pm and you will find a range of artisan and homemade craft goods, cakes and entertainment – so we hope we will see you there! Visit our website or look at our facebook page to see where we will be performing in the future – and if possible, come along!

COME & SING: MOZART "REQUIEM" Good Friday: 19 April 2019 at Bottesford Parish Church

The Christmas period saw ECMVC perform for the fourth year at the Rainbows Christmas Celebration Concert in Repton, Derbyshire; the Rainbows concert is always a magical event and ECMVC and Sonara helped them to raise over £1,800 for the charity. When the two choirs joined to provide seasonal jollity in Derby’s Intu Centre, the bucket collection for Guide Dogs (Amber Valley) raised nearly £800. Two events – £2,600 raised for local charities! And so we look forward to a busy 2019, which will see the choir record a new CD, perform a number of local concerts including another appearance for Little Eaton WI, a joint concert with New Greasley Singers at St Mary’s and the first concert of the year at Nuthall Methodist Church on Saturday 23 February. Preparation for the choir’s forthcoming centenary has now begun in earnest, as the main centenary concert will take place at Nottingham’s Albert Hall on Saturday 28 September. This is followed a week later by an exclusive concert in the Painted Hall at Chatsworth House. The Poppy & Pint, Pierrepont Rd, West Bridgford, Nottingham NG2 5DX

Tanya About Town With New Year behind us, how many of you have stuck to your resolutions? Did you plan to get out more? Explore a bit more culture? Well, here are my suggestions for some of the things to do in and around Nottinghamshire during the first part of the year. Whether you're a visitor or just want to get to know the city a little better, there are lots of tours to take you around the town. Join Hello Notts Tours on the “Nottingham Highlights” City of Nottingham Sightseeing Guided Walking Tour. They take place from March to October. Or explore Nottingham’s rich history and spectacular sites on the Robin Hood Town Tour before heading to Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, built into the cliff on which Nottingham Castle stands. Enjoy a hearty pub lunch and pint of ale, with regular dates throughout the year. You may already be aware of the National Justice Museum in Nottingham’s historic Shire Hall, but have you ever wondered about its hidden secrets? A special new guided tour gives VIP access to the museum's secret spaces and runs throughout the year. Big names in music are set to visit the city this year. Superstar Ozzy Osbourne kicks off the UK leg of his final tour at Nottingham's Motorpoint Arena on 1 February. The less controversial Paul Carrack, one of the most revered voices in music, returns to the Royal Concert Hall on 14 February to the delight his legions of admirers with the new album These Days.

Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. Catch it at the Theatre Royal 12 - 16 Feb. Fancy some nostalgia? Halfway To Paradise tells the story of Billy Fury, featuring the original members of Billy's own band, Fury's Tornados, alongside the golden voice of Colin Gold at the Royal Concert Hall 19 Feb and Wannabe, a spectacular concert created to celebrate the career of the World's biggest girl band, the Spice Girls visits on 10 March. And finally, 'Keeeeep Dancing' as The Strictly Come Dancing Live UK Tour is back and waltzing into the Motorpoint Arena Nottingham for three shows on 5 - 6 February while Brendan Cole leads his cast in a thrilling extravaganza of music and dance at the Royal Concert Hall 20 Feb and join the nation's favourite ballroom couple, Anton & Erin in their new, show-stopping dance production, Those Magical Musicals - 3 Mar 2019'

Want to feel old? Its 20 years since 'You've Come A long Way Baby', but just a few months until Fatboy Slim brings his new tour to Nottingham's Motorpoint Arena on 1 March. Also Ali, Astro and Mickey - the sounds of UB40 come to Nottingham's Royal Concert Hall with 'A Real Labour of Love Tour' to celebrate the 40 years since they first performed live! George Ezra continues his phenomenal career with the announcement of his first ever headline arena tour. The tour takes in 10 arena shows across the UK, heading to the Motorpoint Arena Nottingham on 12 March. Carlton & District Snooker Club Snooker is a fascinating sport. Immensely skillful and totally relaxing. Maybe it’s time for you to dust off your old cue or consider having a go for the first time. The best snooker club in Carlton is without doubt to be found at 21 Burton Road, Carlton, NG4 3DT, situated conveniently mid-way between the Old Volunteer and the Black’s Head pubs. Above a recently opened barber’s shop, called KJ’s Tonsorial Parlour, you enter by climbing the steps to the right of the shop and through the black door at the top. The gate at the bottom of the steps is open when the club is open. The club boasts four top quality full sized snooker tables which can be hired for a small fee. If you don’t own a cue then they are available for use free of charge and refreshments are also available. There is a regular steward who will meet you and if you don’t have a partner will try his best to arrange a game for you. The club is currently open from 6.30 – 10.30pm from Monday to Thursday. There is free car parking directly opposite the club entrance during these hours. I’m Simon Bonsai and have been a member now for over 10 years and thoroughly enjoy playing there every week. I’m not very good. My top break is 121, red yellow red, but everyone is extremely friendly and there is a lovely atmosphere. If you are interested in coming along, just turn up during opening hours and ask for the Steward or phone me on 07771745707. Happy Potting!

TOY RUN 2018

What a successful result! Everything went as smooth as silk. Hot bacon and sausage butties', together with coffee and tea, were provided by Sue and Paul, of the Arrow pub, Gedling Lane. Whilst the riders were breakfasting, the Mayor of Gedling and councillor John Parr judged the best dressed motorcycle. Nine prizes had been donated by both the Arrow and CMC Bikes of Daybrook, and were awarded on the bikers return from their tour of Arnold, Daybrook, Woodthorpe and Mapperley. A pit stop was organized at the market place, Arnold, where the roar of engines, together with beeps from the motorcycles, brought shoppers rushing out of the shops to view this colourful cavalcade, and to take many, many photographs. Back then to the pub, where hot drinks and mince pies were provided. Toys brought in with the bikers generosity were added to the mountain of toys already donated by the the local community. The back rooms of the Arrow were stacked to the rafters ready to be collected by the Salvation Army, then on to be distributed, amongst very needy children. Thank you Arnold for your generosity!

Thank You from Mapperley & Arnold Rotary Club

All members of the Rotary Club of Mapperley & Arnold would like to thank everyone for their tremendous support with our Christmas float collection. In late November and in December until Christmas Eve, Santa in his sleigh, together with his helpers, walked the streets of Mapperley, Arnold and Calverton as well as static collections at the Mapperley shops, Netherfield Retail Park and Gonalston Farm Shop. In total, the magnificent sum of ÂŁ7,500 was raised. We do appreciate your tremendous support and every penny will be used to help many deserving individuals and organisations such as Gedling Memory Cafe, clothing collection for Emmanuel House, food collection for Arnold Foodbank, Outward Bound, working with schools on an Eco Greenhouse project and planting crocus corms as part of the End Polio Now campaign and many, many more. Our main project undertaken in the last year was for the well being of patients who are based at Hayward House, situated at the City Hospital, who require high quality palliative care having life limiting illnesses. The Club have created a courtyard out of an unused area at Hayward House Hospice for patients and family to sit in and enjoy the surroundings. J M Wills - A Service You Can Trust By making a properly drawn-up will, you can decide what will happen to your property and possessions after your death, ensuring that your loved ones are provided for and that they have one less thing to worry about. A will ensures you can leave your property and possessions to whoever you choose, although advice should be obtained to ensure you have made reasonable provisions for your dependants. At a time when modern families are becoming increasingly “blended making a will now is even more important then ever.

Who will your family turn to when no will has been written to guide them? If you have made a will, when was the last time you reviewed this? Time and circumstances might mean that a will made several years ago is no longer appropriate to your current situation. J M Wills & Legal Services can make the whole process easy and it can be carried out in the comfort of your own home where they can help you make these hard decisions.

There are also a number of ďŹ nancial considerations that have to be considered like inheritance tax and old age planning.

Caring About Our Community There is much about the communities across Gedling that we can be really proud of. Every time I am out in the constituency I see and meet people that are caring and supporting those that they share a community with. For this article I wanted to talk about ‘Loneliness’, the ways in which we can help others and learn about the support that is out there. ‘Loneliness’ for a long time was something that was not discussed and sometimes even seen as just a part of life, but it doesn’t have to be and with communities like the ones across Gedling, I know that we can combat it. As individuals we can all play a part, be talking to and inviting people to join occasions or activities. You can take the time to check on your neighbours. If you are a member of a group you can help by supporting new members and encouraging them to come back again. I know many of you are already doing this but it would be great if everyone was. I want Gedling to be a community where everyone feels a part of it, where we respect each other and the place we live, where everyone feels safe and supported. There are many groups and support networks locally and our communities work hard for those around us. Please do not be afraid to join these groups and go along, I have visited many of them and they are so warm and welcoming and they genuinely want more people to be involved The Arnold Methodist Church is on Front Street near the market and it runs a lot of events and groups, you

can contact them on 0115 926 6828 or pop in on a Saturday morning where they have a community tea and coffee morning and you can find out more about the groups and events. The Eagles Nest hosts a friendship group for the over 60’s, I recently visited here and it is a wonderful, friendly and welcoming group who would love to have more members. In this magazine on the Arnold Community Diary pages there are lots of clubs and organisations you can get involved with. You can also contact Gedling Borough Council to find out more – Telephone 0115 901 3901, Email enquiries@gedling.gov.uk or visit - www.gedling.gov. uk/ Please never feel alone. We have a whole community out there with lots to offer and something for everyone. Meeting You I am often out in Gedling and I have met many of you, it is always a pleasure and privilege. I would like to have the opportunity to meet with more of you. Do you have a local business or run a community group? I would love to be able to visit as many local groups and businesses as possible and meet those of you that are making such a valuable contribution to the lives of others and to our local economy. If you would like to arrange a visit please contact me on the details above. I look forward to hearing from you. Do You Need Help or Support? Please contact me office if you need advice, help or support regarding an issue. I do continue to run a regular surgery which is by appointment.

Inspire: Culture, Learning and Libraries, Wins National Lottery Support

Inspire has received a National Lottery grant of £10k for an exciting heritage project, Home Cooked Heritage, in Nottinghamshire. The project focuses on uncovering and sharing the food heritage of Nottinghamshire; family recipes, food producers, social history and what food means to us all now. Supported through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), the project will enable local young people from two schools to visit Nottinghamshire Archives and work with the materials, to both learn about, and be inspired by, food stories. They will work with heritage expert James Wright, performerstoryteller Nicky Rafferty and visual artist Clare Taylor, to produce creative and literacy responses to the heritage materials. Five adult groups in public workshops, held across five Inspire venues will also work with the artists and create a response. Works produced by the participants will be curated into a touring exhibition that will be shown in Inspire Library Galleries across the county and made into a book that will go back into the Nottinghamshire Archives to be discovered by food historians of the future. Helen Ackroyd, Principal Arts Officer at Inspire said, “We are thrilled to have received this support thanks to National Lottery players and can’t wait to see what is unearthed in Nottinghamshire Archives to inspire our artists of all ages.”

Equality Rules... Doesn’t It? by Helen Jones I was intrigued but also a little saddened to read that Paralympic swimmer Liz Johnson, who was born with cerebral palsy, has launched a new firm with a mission to transform employment for disabled people. It’s a sad indictment of our society that in 2019 there is still prejudice and misgivings surrounding employing people with physical impairments. According to disability charity Scope, 19% of working age adults are disabled – that’s a large number of people with skills that could enhance the workplace. Did you know that discrimination against any form of disabled candidate is actually unlawful under the Equality Act 2010? This applies to both physical and mental disability. In my last article I touched on the importance of good mental health in the workplace and being supportive of colleagues. In any organisation senior management should also demonstrate fair and equal hiring practices by always considering applicants who are disabled. As an employment business we have placed many candidates who had different physical needs with clients who have been happy to accommodate and benefit from the skills and experience they bring to the role. The world is a diverse place and so should the workplace be. There are many organisations who offer help and advice if you or anyone you know has been affected by this issue. Restaurant & Bar Lounge Fine Indian Cuisine

“No No Ordinary Tree -No No Ordinary Restaurant” Restaurant

T

B T, readily found in India is no ordinary tree as it has the ability to continually spread by putting down new roots that in turn form new trunks. Over time one single tree can grow to the size and strength of a small forest! Amongst people in India the Banyan is revered for its mystical properties and provides a focal point for village folk to meet, take shade and watch the day go by. We take our inspiration from the organic yet mystical properties of this special tree and endeavour to grow our business in the same way. Since opening our doors in January 2007, The Banyan Tree has certainly taken root, and eleven years on it continues to grow and consistently serves fine quality Indian cuisine. Those of you who have tried us will know that we are up there with the very best in Nottinghamshire. Our slogan is "no ordinary tree - no ordinary restaurant", and our food and service rarely fails to strike a cord with our patrons. Naturally, we use only the freshest of ingredients, and all our spices, massala, and sauces are skilfully

prepared from primary ingredients which naturally yield flavours that are distinct in taste and quality. Our menu boasts a great balance of popular offerings and a notable selection of signature dishes which have been so well received that we have seldom changed our menu. However, we hope you are as excited as us to learn that we have launched a new menu this January 2019. Our new menu has focused around the introduction of more healthier grills and a select few starters and curries. But do rest

assured that our high service standards, restaurant design and ambience shall always remain a constant. Please visit our website www.thebanyan.co.uk to peruse our new menu.

LET’S GET BAKING N

ot many of us can find the time to bake these days, despite the popularity of programmes such as the Great British Bake Off, but there is no doubt that a home-baked cake can knock the socks off anything you can buy ready-made in the supermarket. If you do decide to bake your own cakes, not only will you fill the house with a gorgeous aroma that makes the whole family feel like they’ve stepped back in time, you will also be following in the footsteps of our ancestors. The first evidence of baking dates back to the ancient world. The oldest oven

ever discovered was in Croatia in 2014 dating back some 6500 years. The ancient Egyptians and Greeks baked bread and baking flourished under the Romans with their love of festivals and feasts. The first Bakers’ Guild was established in Rome in 168 BC. The recipes I have chosen are simple and quick so you won’t spend all day in the kitchen, they also celebrate the use of fruit in baking, so whilst I can’t claim they are healthy or detoxifying, they do at least contribute to your 5 a day!

Passionfruit Sandwich Cake

Seasonal Pear Cake

Best Ever Banana Bread

A really easy cake this one, sweet but with the tang of passionfruit, perfect with a cuppa. Ingredients 200g butter, soft 200g golden caster sugar 4 eggs (beaten) 200g self-raising flour (sifted) A dash of milk Passionfruit filling 4 large passionfruit 100g butter, very soft 200g icing sugar

This is best made with soft, buttery pears and served warm with a dollop of cream or crème fraiche. Ingredients 50g butter (melted) 500g ripe pears, peeled, cored and chopped Juice of 1 lemon 75g caster sugar 2 eggs (beaten) 2 tbsp apricot jam for glaze 75g plain flour 1 heaped tsp baking powder

A really easy quick bake, that can be frozen. Ingredients 140g softened butter 140g caster sugar 140g self-raising flour 1tsp baking powder 2 large eggs (beaten) 3 ripe bananas (retain half of one for slicing on the top of the cake)

Heat oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas4. Line and butter 2 x 20cm sponge tins. Beat butter and sugar until light and soft then beat in eggs, flour and milk to make a smooth batter. Divide between tins and smooth off. Bake for 20/25 mins until risen and golden. Leave to cool.

Heat oven to 180°C/160°fan/gas4. Line and grease a 20cm, loosebottomed cake tin. Put pears into a bowl with lemon juice to prevent them going brown. Sieve the flour and baking powder into a bowl, add a pinch of salt and the caster sugar. Beat in the eggs and melted butter then fold in the pears. Pour the mixture into the tin and bake for about 50 mins. Cool on a wire rack.

Halve the passionfruit and scoop out the seeds, push through a sieve to obtain the juice. Beat the butter until light and combine with half the icing sugar, add 2 tbsp of the passionfruit juice and the rest of the icing sugar. Brush the two inside faces of the sponges with the left-over juice and then spread the filling on one half, add the top and dust with icing sugar.

To make the glaze, melt the apricot jam with 1 tbsp water and brush on the surface of the cake.

Heat oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas4. Butter and line a 2lb loaf tin. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy then add in the beaten eggs and a little flour. Fold in the remaining flour, the baking powder and 2 ½ mashed bananas. Pour into the tin and decorate with sliced banana, bake for about 30 mins until a skewer comes out clean. Rest in the tin for 10 mins and then cool on a wire rack.

A New Year, A New You Every new year, masses of the British population plunge into a frenzy of dieting in an attempt to counterbalance weight gained during the holidays. Various foods are banned and a new exercise regime is created, only for the whole thing to be abandoned a couple of weeks later. As a BANT registered nutritionist, I find these “diets” especially amusing, for two very good reasons: diets rarely work and cutting out entire food groups is not a sustainable practice. Luckily there are some simple dietary tweaks that deliver big results if losing weight and getting healthy is your goal. Start with protein The jury is out on whether breakfast is indeed the most important meal of the day or if it’s just a marketing ploy invented by Kelloggs. What we do know is that if you eat breakfast, making it a protein based one has its advantages. Studies show that eating a high-protein breakfast is both protective against weight-gain and regulates appetite for the rest of the day. The net result is fewer hunger pangs or food cravings throughout the day. Eat more veg We only have to glance at the current list of superfoods to notice that fruits and vegetables are the very things that are exceptionally good for us. Gram for gram, plants contain a greater quantity and combination of vitamins and minerals than anything else that is likely to pass our lips. Research by Imperial College London suggests eating 10 portions of vegetables and fruits for optimum wellness. Whilst that may seem a little excessive, it doesn’t mean that you’ll need to chow down on mountains of vegetables. A handful of spinach, a couple of florets of broccoli and a few spears of asparagus added to a lunch will count as 3 of those portions. Repeat that twice more in a day and you are onto a winner. Hydrate Water is an essential component of every cell of the body, in fact the average person is approximately 65% water. Since we are more water than human, it pays off to stay hydrated. The good news is, by consuming 8 glasses of water a day, you are more likely to sustain a healthy weight, experience fewer food cravings and reduce your chances of chronic disease. Spend time outdoors As health benefits go, spending time outdoors comes with a whole host of them, yet it’s one of the most overlooked. Research shows spending time in nature has a significant de-stressing, gut boosting and immune strengthening effect.Try a 30-minute lunch time or post-work walk per day. It’s free and a decent form of exercise.

Let’s get the biggest misconception out of the way: the end result of nutritional therapy is not a diet plan. Sure, you will get some recommendations of what to eat but not in a prescriptive manner. Behind every nutritionist is a real person that, occasionally, eats cake, chocolate and all of that tasty stuff you will likely crave. We know what a perfect diet looks like but also understand this may not be realistic for everyone.

Evidence

For this reason, there are no perfect diet plans, only steady progress that will get you closer to your health goals.

My only ask was 100% commitment and anything is possible.

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO START: GAIL’S JOURNEY How often or how many times have you heard the phrase “I’m too old”, or maybe “you need to slow down a little”? I’d like you to meet Gail (pictured). Gail has worked in the public sector for, let’s say, a while. Gail reached out to me as she had heard I’m not afraid of a challenge, so we connected and had a very in-depth conversation about her request. Want to know what Gail asked? “Andy, I am retiring in a few weeks and I want to set myself a personal goal. Not to be all showy and make it all about me, but to set a standard bar high and commit myself to this goal.” “My goal is to step onto a stage within a physique/ bodybuilding competition. Not to be placed first but to say I did this, and I got here.” You can imagine my eyes! I LIVE for moments like these. If you’ve followed me for a while on social media, you’ll know I like to challenge things that people say can’t be done. Gail had been told this, and I wasn’t going to sit there and let her believe it. In the past Gail has been active, and has been into some sort of general fitness routine. She has also been dieting for much of her life. Her first question was, “Is my goal possible?”

Email: info@strengthyphysique.co.uk Website: www.strengthphysique.co.uk

Gail has struggled with her relationship with food for most of her life. Always on a low-calorie diet of 1000 – 1200 calories per day accompanied by lots of exercise to try keep weight gain away. When I explained we would need to increase weight while we programme for muscle gain, I wasn’t sure how this would impact mentally with Gail. Safe to say, we currently have Gail on 2500 calories a day, training six days per week with full nutrition guidance and what a result this is producing! The challenge of overcoming a poor relationship with food is long gone. Gail is consuming twice the number of GOOD calories in a day than she previously did and weight has only been increasing 0.5kg over a few months at a time with a total of nearly 4kg gained. Safe to say Gail’s goal to compete in 2020 is right on track and I am sure you will agree she looks fabulous. I’d like to leave you with a few things to think about going into this year: 1. You are never too old to make a positive shift in life. 2. Exercise only benefits longevity of life when done correctly. 3. Check in with yourself and ask how your relationship with food and dieting is in general. 4. Asking for help doesn’t mean you aren’t capable, it is probably the most sensible thing you could do. Set yourself a goal like Gail did and commit to it 100%. We all deserve the best of ourselves and it is only ourselves that can deliver that result. Enjoy YOUR journey

Local Author & Goalkeeper Release New Book Local author Jonathan Nicholas has worked with goalkeeper Steve Cherry to produce Steve’s exciting new autobiography, ‘Cherry Picking – Life between the Sticks’. Jonathan says: ‘We worked very closely together throughout 2018 to produce an honest and often hilarious account of Steve’s thirty year footballing career and it will be released on 28th February. We both had a great time writing it and really hope it will be an interesting read, not just for football fans but readers of more general autobiography.’ Steve Cherry was born in Calverton and was spotted by a Derby County scout at the age of fifteen. He played at Derby County for nine years and was capped for England Youth under Brian Clough several times until moving to Walsall FC, Plymouth Argyle and then Chesterfield before the boyhood club of his dreams Notts County. Steve was at Notts County from 1989 – 1995 in the glory days under Neil Warnock, winning two consecutive Wembley finals and promotion to the First Division. How was this done? What happened behind the scenes at Notts? ‘Cherry Picking’ is available now for pre-order on Amazon, and on general release on 28th February.

The Telly

Tale

By the time you read this, “I’m a Pleb”, as we like to call it, will be a distant memory. We will already be racking our brains as to who was crowned the King or Queen of the jungle and the “celebrities” will all be signing up for the next reality show. However, in my house it is compulsory viewing and actually the only programme that gets kids, dogs and adults all together on the sofa. So it does have its uses. After the jungle antics finished we were straight into Christmas fortnight. It’s the only time of the year I buy the Radio Times and turn into my Grandma by circling all the programmes I want to watch with a black marker. I then forget to watch any of them.

Did you know... • the inventor of television would not let his own children watch TV • the average person in the UK watches over 4 hours telly a day • Top Gear is the most watched show with 350 million viewers in over 170 countries • the first couple to be shown in bed together on telly were Fred and Wilma Flinstone Telly these days is shockingly bad. How is it possible to have access to hundreds of channels and nothing to watch? Do I really

want to see scallywags being chased by police cars three times a day? Or scallywags fiddling the welfare state? Or scallywags wasting the time of our emergency services? No I do not! And just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse, Dr Pimple Popper appeared on our telly. Dr...Pimple...Popper... Any ideas? Yep, it’s a programme about squeezing spots. Holy Moly how low can you go?? And it’s not just the programmes. The adverts are even worse. Sitting down, about to tuck into my “chuck it all in a pan and hope for the best” dinner, I do not want to be thinking about the benefits of Tena Lady pull on pants. Surely there is a time and place for these adverts and 8pm on a school night is not one of them! I could go on – but this is a family magazine... It’s the youth I feel sorry for. The innocence of dating programmes like Blind Date have been replaced by Love Island where wearing anything more than a bikini is a no, no. Even worse is Naked Attraction. A show where the only thing used to select a prospective partner is a view of their bottom half. And this is on at 10pm. I nearly choked on my chocolate Hob Nob when flicking through the channels with my kids on a family weekend away. And this is series 4!!! Stop the world, I want to get off... Thank goodness for NetFlix. Oh and Peaky Blinders. And Masterchef. And The Apprentice. And not forgetting The Island. Well, if you can’t beat ‘em..... © Ali Wale

Dream Team

Dream Doors is a family business, run by Jon and Hilary Brown. They have had an amazing first year, winning New Stars for 2018 for the most outstanding franchise! Dream Door’s showroom in Beeston has now been open for a year and Jon and Hilary would like to thank all their valued customers and extend an invitation to new customers to pop in for a chat and a coffee to discuss ideas for your new kitchen or bedroom (or both!).

an honest helpful service. Whether you’re looking to freshen up your kitchen by just changing the doors, or you want to redesign the whole kitchen or bedroom, we’re on hand to help. Working with our clients every step of the way, we help take your ideas, and turn them into a reality.

Before

After

Dream Doors are now proud to include a brand new collection of fully fitted and sliding wardrobes and bedroom furniture along with their high quality kitchen and bedroom refits.

Every installation is project managed, whether that is a worktop swap or a totally new kitchen. The important difference is you will only deal with the owners who care and treat every project with the same attention to detail. Not only do we change the doors, we can supply and install new units, work surfaces from laminate to glass and supply a vast range of solid surfaces along with sinks and appliances. We are proud to be main suppliers for NEFF and Samsung kitchen appliances. The advantages of sliding doors systems are well known - maximising storage, with unrestricted access while taking up no extra floor space. These doors come in a wider range of materials and finishes than you could imagine, allowing you to put them together in any combination you like, and creating a beautifully practical look that is uniquely yours. With spring around the corner, there has never been a better time to give a new lease of life to your kitchen or bedroom. How does it work? The team at Dream Doors Nottingham are on hand to help make the process as simple as possible. Forget hard sales tactics, the experienced team will offer

We provide a friendly and professional service using qualified tradesmen who will never compromise on quality or craftmanship and you can be safe in the knowledge that we will comply with all regulations as required. Our fitters will treat your home with respect and we will do all we can to minimise any disruption. Everything we do is made-to-measure, so if your kitchen or bedroom is a little out of the ordinary, we can accommodate literally every size and dimension. The beauty of choosing Dream Doors, the UK’s leading kitchen make over company, is the peace of mind that you are working with a company that has been transforming kitchens for over 19 years. Read the reviews and scores on the independent review website www.checkatrade.co.uk We are proud to have a score of 9.82/10.

home & garden Fantastic Cats Launched In Nottingham

ALL WORK CARRIED OUT WITH QUALITY AND CARE IN YOUR HOME

On 7th April, Ben Robson (pictured above with Ollie), a local young man who was diagnosed with autism at the age of three, will release his first illustrated story. With great determination and support from family and friends, Ben has overcome the challenges of his condition and turned himself into a productive writer and artist. ‘Kitty Realms’ is a fantastic story that transfers his real-life cats into a magical realm where they have to brave many adversities. His heroes live in the mystical kingdom of Alvadaar which is threatened by an evil sorcerer. Written and illustrated in a child friendly style, Ben has produced a magical adventure for all ages. This first story will be available as hard cover on the day of launch and as paperback or eBook via the online publisher. The book launch event will be held at the Espresso Gallery on Woodborough Road on Sunday 7th April, from 4pm. The gallery will also be showing a selection of Ben’s many other drawings. Ben is constantly writing more stories. He has already completed his next writing project which is currently being edited. ‘Kitty Realms’ will be dedicated to his mother, who sadly passed away in late 2017.

Robert Mellors Old Boys

Local councillor and school governor, John Parr, has been overwhelmed by the response he has received after his article appeared in the April/May 2018 NG5 magazine. More former students have been in touch from all around the globe! Below is the first part of Des Wright’s story. I hope you agree it is really interesting to read these stories from “old boys” that have contacted John. They help to keep the history of the school, and Arnold alive. More to follow!

Desborough Wright: 1943-1946 - Part One I attended Robert Mellors Senior Boys’ School from September 1943 to July 1946. The Second World War was raging and the tide had not yet turned in the Allies’ favour. By the time I left the school three years later, the war had ended in total victory for the Allies and the Atomic Age had begun. Like many of my friends, and some of the teachers, I rode to school on my bike or walked, in my case from my home in Daybrook, returning there for the midday meal. There were no school buses or school dinners in those days. Compared with the wide-ranging curricula available today, our education was relatively simple and based on the three Rs plus history, geography, science, woodwork and some sport. We were graded into “Standards” according to our ability and I seem to have been suitable for an ‘A’ grade. However narrow it may have been, our education was thorough and certainly stood me in good stead for the rest of my life. Being wartime, teachers were in short supply as many were away serving their country on foreign battlefields. But we were blessed with a special group of both men and women who cared about us in an unassuming way and taught us well. The Headmaster was Mr. Donald McCunn, a veteran of the Great War. A kindly man, he set a fine example in professionalism and dress standards, which I have always remembered. We stayed in our own classrooms with our class teacher for most subjects. Time has dimmed my memory of them all but I do remember four teachers in particular. My first teacher was Miss Keeble who taught us in ‘1A.’ She was a good teacher but had a bit of a temper sometimes resorting to a slap with a

blackboard ruler to keep order. Then there was Mr. Ted (Billy) Burgess in ‘2A.’ He was a strict but sound teacher and I particularly enjoyed his history lessons. He kept us abreast of what was happening with the war and both he and Miss Keeble instilled in me a love of history, which I have retained to this day. Mr. Cyril (Horace) Carter, who ruled over the science lab, was our final year class teacher. He was both scientist and musician and under his severe exterior was a caring man with a dry sense of humour. He and Billy Burgess took us for singing lessons in the Assembly Hall. Billy would conduct us and Horace played the piano. With the cane in evidence, we sang with gusto songs from Gilbert & Sullivan’s comic operas and others from the American Civil War. I still sing those songs today. Another teacher I well remember was Mr. Clements who taught us woodwork. I still have on my desk a letter-rack of English oak, which he helped me to make. I have never achieved much in woodwork and would well qualify for his description of a “wood-butcher”. We enjoyed his lessons though and remember his penchant for using “Arabella”, a wooden spatula, on any wayward lad who deserved it. My only academic contact with the Headmaster was when he taught us Algebra every Friday afternoon. It was a subject most of us hated; I never grasped its purpose nor have I needed it in life. It was not surprising that when a rumour passed through the school that the world would end “this Friday” I secretly hoped it would happen before 2pm, then we would miss Algebra. Both the world and Algebra continued as usual. Our formal sports lessons were very simple compared with today’s vast range of offerings. It was confined to soccer, cricket and rounders played on the field behind the school. The teachers joined in with us, and although sport has never interested me I remember happy times doing my best amidst much laughter on that field. To be continued...

Arnold War Memorial by Bob Massey

When the First World War ended in 1918, men started to return to England from the battle fronts. They brought back with them their experiences and stories of those from Arnold who had been lost. As a result, there was soon a move to erect a monument to those who were not coming home. Some claimed that it should take the form of an extra pension for the widows and children of these men since they were a living memorial. It was decided, however, that it would take the form of a more permanent memorial. One that generations to come would see when personal memories were gone. In 1921, the Arnold Urban District Council put £750 towards the estimated £1000 required for such a memorial and started a public subscription towards raising more funds. The council also started an appeal for names to be submitted for inclusion on the memorial. Books for the purpose were opened at the council offices on Front Street, Redhill Post Office and the Library. In the end, some 250 names were submitted. We know now that at least another 50 names should have been included but no one at the time put the names of these men forward. The grief of loss and the lack of other living relatives all had a part to play in this omission. Many still clung to the hope that those posted as missing would yet come home, turning up as prisoners of war or in hospitals. Various events and concerts were arranged to raise the extra money required for this memorial. One of these was a flower show in Arnot Hill Park in August 1922. As well as the exhibition and show there were swimming displays in the lake by members of the Nottingham Ladies Swimming Club, a concert by the Hucknall Glee Party and also one by the Arnold Minstrel Troop. Music was provided by the string band led by Mr A. Alford as well as the Arnold United Prize Band.

On 11th December 1922, a concert of sacred music was staged at the St Albans Picture Palace, the cinema that stood on the corner of Hallams Lane and Nottingham Road. The choir was made up of 80 boys from the British School. On Christmas day that year, another concert was performed, this time at the Baptist Church that used to stand on Front Street. The singers were again the boys from the British School.

Through these and other events the outstanding money was raised. The design of the memorial was decided upon in 1922, and was to be a cross with a base inscribed with the names of those lost. There was much debate about where to put it, with Daybrook Square the favourite. In the end, a spot in Arnot Hill Park, near to the house that had been the hospital during the war, was deemed the most appropriate. The memorial was designed by local councillor and architect William Herbert Higginbottom, who also designed Beeston’s memorial cross at the same time. At this time, the annual armistice service was still carried out at St Mary’s Church. The first recorded service at the war memorial in the park is after the Second World War in 1946 when the names of those fallen in that conflict were inscribed on the base plinth. Since that date the memorial has been the focus of the annual event.

on yer bike! A few months ago I decided to forgo my personal safety and ride a bicycle to work. Why, might you ask, would a middle-aged man decide to do this? Well, ultimately this is all about getting regular exercise, having a faster commute, and saving some money. Don’t worry, I have no plans to become a MAMIL*, nobody needs to see me in all my aerodynamic glory, but I thought it may be worth sharing the experience for those thinking of doing the same. After all, how hard could it be after twenty years of not going near a bike? STUCK IN THE PAST It turns out that a lot has changed. Most importantly bike technology has moved on. Compared to when I last got in the saddle I feel like a Russian monkey in a space suit. I was bewildered by the choices. I used to have a five-speed Raleigh racing bike, with rubber block brakes and a gear lever on the side of the frame. Now I have to deal with more gears than I can count, too many cogs, hydraulic disc brakes, and bike frames made of materials that are lighter than air. Then I have the choice of racer, hybrid, cyclocross, mountain, hardtail, and more besides. Fortunately I know plenty of people who are already competent cyclists and I went with the following advice: ‘get a bullet-proof hybrid for commuting. Something that is low maintenance and you can’t break’. BUYER BEWARE So armed with all the information I could find I went to a local bike shop and was well attended by the staff. Having test ridden a bike that took my fancy I then loaded up with gear. Second piece of advice I was given was as follows: ‘Get a helmet, lights, hi-vis jacket, and a bike pump’. Armed with this I felt safe that I had the basics covered and didn’t resort to the classic blunder of trying to buy everything in the bike shop. To be honest, I think the staff took pity on me. FIRST RIDE So, I’d got the bike and the kit. Now I had to ride the thing. The third piece of advice I was given now stuck in my mind: ‘you’ve bought the bike, now make sure you ride it’. I was determined not to be someone who spent money on a bike and left it to gather dust in the garage. So I took it out for a spin down the ring road where there is a really wide cycle path (the further I was from traffic the better). About two miles in, and after a

rather violent attempt to change gears, the chain fell off and jammed itself between frame and deraileur (that’s the proper name for the big cog). Chastened, I had to walk my bike back home and phone a friend to help me out. Fortunately he was pretty understanding and glossed over my embarrassment and together we fixed the errant chain. ACHES AND PAINS Here’s something no-one tells you about riding a bike: your body will hate you for the first week or so. I’m relatively fit thanks to chasing my kids on a daily basis but I was the sorest man alive for the first week and a half of cycling. I decided to jump straight in and cycle to work every day which left me with aching legs, an inability to go up hills at anything more than a snail’s pace, and a really sore backside. I’m not proud about this, but it takes a while for your rear-end to get used to sitting on a saddle. Factor in all the bumps and potholes in Nottingham’s roads and I could make a case for mandatory cushions on my office chair. But it wears off fast, soon I was whizzing to work on a regular basis OTHER PEOPLE Here’s the other thing people don’t tell you: the minute you get on a bike you will become a militant cyclist. I’m not kidding, pedestrians, dog walkers, parked cars, traffic lights, drivers, students, they’re all wrong. None of them understand the trials of riding a bike and they are clearly subservient to your priority on the road or cyclepath. Now this is all a matter of perspective, but you’ll be amazed just how quickly you become Judgy McJudgeson of Judgeville on your commute. Good luck with that, the trick is to not buy into the idea that somehow only you know what you’re doing. So that’s it, my first foray into the world of cycling. Come back in a year and I’ll probably be clad head to foot in cycling gear with a garage full of bikes. *MAMIL - middle-aged man in lycra Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

Well Done Killisick Junior School Tag Rugby Team!

Killisick Junior School is celebrating the success of one of it’s sports teams as they came in second place in the Tag Rugby County Finals. Team Coach and Deputy Head at Killisick Junior School, Mr Giles Drapkin said that his teams’ journey to the final was an effort to be proud of. “None of our children play for rugby teams outside of school and were faced with some excellent teams along the way. They had a great start when they won the Gedling tournament in October, winning all of their matches, including winning the final 6 tries to 1.” The team then went through to the final where they were ultimately beaten to first place by Bleasby. Despite that, said Mr Drapkin, the schools’ enthusiasm for their team’s achievement was unaffected. “I was absolutely delighted with the team. They showed amazing teamwork, commitment and passion. The skill level was excellent, and you wouldn't know that this was a new sport for them. Killisick Junior School couldn't be more proud of them!”

106

The children of Killisick Junior School now have a new sensory room in their school, which say teachers, will provide a quiet area for use by children and staff for a variety of activities. Pupil Alfie O’Neill said he was thrilled with how the room looked. “It’s where some of us do activities in the afternoon and today we are having a celebration for the people who painted the room. The room is special because this is an odd room out, this room has a magnificent look to it and I think it’s great.” Miss Desrine Reid (Senior Teaching Assistant) said that the room is the result of many hands work. Painted with stars and planets, the room is definitely not your average classroom said Miss Reid. “Some of our year 6 children have also helped to get the room ready as they have been having activities in here too. I hope that the whole school will get to use the sensory room for different activities as well as the many interventions that we can cater for in here. “Children have such a wide variety of needs and this room will help to encourage them, in a space that belongs to them and is nice to be in. We want our children to have fun with the room.” With special lighting and soft furnishings, the room has a welcoming feel on entering. Oliver Rafferty said he thought it was somewhere he wanted to spend a lot of time, “The colours are really good and I like the tent area a lot. I think it’s all really cool!”

kids A Stepping Stone To The Bigger Clubs Gedling Southbank, as a grassroots club, takes pride as a stepping stone for younger players to move on to the local professional clubs. Ian Jacks our GSB United U14 coach also scouts for Nottingham Forest age 7 – 13 Academy. Nine players from his team have represented Nottingham Forest Development Squad against other clubs this season. Seven of these players have been with Gedling Southbank since they were 6/7 years old! Alex Tranter pictured left, aged 9 who was with GSB Tigers U9’s coached by Chris Murdock from aged 5, has recently signed for Notts County, and Dean Gardner pictured right, signed for Derby after only 1 year playing for GSB Athletic U10’s and winning the Div 1 U10 title. And three of the very successful GSB Girls U12 from last season, Sommer Button, Jess Ellis & Fleur Jaimes, have also signed on for Notts County this season. The commitment from the coaching staff and support from team sponsor GDRT undoubtedly helped the girls get to where they are now and they loved their time at GSB and made great friends! Many players have moved on to higher standard clubs over the years and the above players are just a few examples of recent movements. Grassroots clubs should always help players to fulfil their potential and leave the door open to players to return if things don’t work out and they want to return For any details about the club please follow the links below. www.gedlingsouthbankfc.co.uk/club-contact facebook.com/Gedling Southbank FC

Richard Bonington Awarded Grant

Richard Bonington Primary & Nursery School were one of five groups to have been awarded a grant through the updated Nottinghamshire EnviroGrant scheme - the Reduce, Reuse, Recycling Fund run by Veolia, (Nottinghamshire County Council’s waste contractor). Richard Bonington Primary & Nursery School Food Glorious Food project was awarded £957 for its recycling based garden project. The school are extending their outdoor learning and continuing with a recycling based garden project as they work towards applying for an Eco School Green Flag Award. The funding will allow the school to purchase a greenhouse, water butts to capture and reuse rainwater, chicken coop and other gardening equipment. The soil for the raised beds will be reused from a wildflower meadow area, and food/garden waste will be composted for additional soil improvement.

kids Hollies Day Nurseries’ Do Battle With Plastic

A chain of children’s day nurseries in Nottingham enlisted the help of Robin Hood to do battle with plastic over Christmas. Drew and Becky Pike who own Hollies Day Nurseries, tasked their managers to come up with environmentally-friendly ways to transform their buildings into Winter Wonderlands with an emphasis on using natural and recycled materials. Tim Pollard, who plays Nottingham’s official Robin Hood and Lisa Douglas, who runs Things To Do in Nottinghamshire, visited the nurseries in West Bridgford, Sherwood, Mapperley and Arnold to judge the results and choose an overall winner. After much deliberation, Arnold was announced as the winner and received £1,000 to spend on resources at the nursery. The pre-school children at Arnold were delighted to meet Robin Hood and made bows made out of sticks and string to welcome him to their nursery. “It’s so important that we encourage our children to consider recycling and how plastic affects the environment in the long-term” added Becky Pike, “so we wanted the staff to think outside the box and be more innovative with their decorations this year, rather than just popping to the shop and buying them. We are very proud of the efforts and fantastic creativity that has been shown by everyone and we will be encouraging the nurseries to continue with this idea in the future”.

Nottinghamshire Police PCSO (Police Community Support Officer) Paula Hipkiss gives us an insight into the valuable role which she has held for several years. Q: What is your role? A: My role is to provide a link between the community which we serve and the police. I consider it to be a valuable role as we provide a visible presence on the streets of Nottinghamshire.

to provide crime prevention advice, offer general advice, visit schools, carry out foot patrols, scene preservation, road traffic collision traffic control, low-level crime reporting and covering general policing issues. Q: Have you had to face any challenging/new experiences? A: Every day is a new challenge and no two days are the same. You need to be able to think on your feet, problem solve/offer alternative outcomes for peoples issues and problems. I have overcome many personal challenges in my time as a PCSO but I think I have learned from all my experiences and try to put them into practice to help others. Q: What does a typical day at work look like for you?

A: Every day is different but generally we discuss issues that have arisen or that need looking at both individually and as a team. Our sergeant will ask what our daily patrol plan is? This may include any agency meetings we may have. We will also catch up on any paperwork/computer work outstanding. Apart from any tasks our sergeant or control room give us, we plan our own day but you do need to be out and about and visible wherever possible. We can cover scene preservations, road traffic collision traffic flow patrols, burglary foot patrols, visits to burglary victims and house to house enquiries. My area is around a small town centre so I visit all my shops. We attend local meetings, where applicable, to offer crime prevention advice to all. You are encouraged to get involved with any local events. If there are any events in my area I will cover them (ie family events, Beavers/ Cubs/Rainbows talks, light switchons, Remembrance Sunday, Summer Play Days, Bonfire Night, Halloween, parades through the town etc). More about Paula’s role in the next edition...
